Bradley’s Buzz: For 2010, SI has Tech 8th, UGA 22nd

Will Georgia again outrun the Jackets in 2010? (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)

Will Georgia again outrun the Yellow Jackets in 2010? (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)

You’ll never guess who’s No. 1 in SI.com’s college football power rankings for 2010. Actually, you will. Alabama is the easy choice, same as Florida was easy in preseason 2009. (And who was preseason No. 1 in 2008? Why, Georgia.) But the top spot isn’t why we’re here. It’s to focus on the locals, both of which appear in Andy Staples’ Top 25.

Georgia Tech is No. 8. Georgia is No. 22. I’d say that’s too high for the former, about right for the latter.

I reserve the right to amend my opinion in light of developments — if, say, either one finds a defensive coordinator, or if Herschel Walker forgoes his MMA dreams to reclaim that fourth year of collegiate eligibility — but I’d say, as of Jan. 14, 2010, that Tech will dip slightly in 2010 and Georgia will rise a bit.

My take on Tech: It won’t be bad on offense — quoth Paul Johnson: “I’d be stunned if our B-back doesn’t gain 1,000 yards next season” — but Demaryius Thomas is the irreplaceable part, not Jonathan Dwyer. Given the nature of his offense, Johnson isn’t apt to find another receiver half as good as Bay-Bay. (Johnson inherited Thomas, it must be noted, from Chan Gailey.)

The defense will surely benefit from a new coordinator, but not many defenses can lose its two most gifted players and spike upward in production. Through these long-range lenses, I can see Tech winning nine games next season and finishing second to Virginia Tech in the ACC Coastal.

One word of caution, however: The Coastal is going to be tough. Three other teams are included in Mr. Staples’ rankings: Virginia Tech at No. 9, Miami at No. 14 and North Carolina at No. 18. And the Jackets must play two of the three on the road.

As for Georgia: I could see the Bulldogs winning nine games if things break right. The offense could be terrific if Georgia finds a quarterback. One note: The past two times Mark Richt has entered a season with a new quarterback, his teams have finished 9-4 and 8-5. And I’m thinking Aaron Murray (or Logan Grey, or Zach Mettenberger) won’t quite have the impact Matthew Stafford did at the end of 2006.

Which school will have the better 2010 season?

View Results

Loading ... Loading ...

The defense lost a big-timer in Rennie Curran, but Marcus Dowtin should fill that tackling-machine role. At issue is how fast the new coordinator, assuming Georgia finds one, can make a difference. My guess: Soon, but not overnight.

Mr. Staples has only one SEC team rated above Georgia  in the SEC East: Florida is No. 11. Only two SEC West teams are in the Top 25 — LSU is the other, at No. 23 — and Georgia doesn’t play either. If Richt can find the right quarterback and the right coordinator, the door is open. But I, as suggested in yesterday’s post that was loved by one and all, see South Carolina as the team primed to give the Gators the hardest run.

Oh, and if you’re wondering which team will win at Sanford Stadium on Nov. 27, here’s your final score:

Georgia 27, Tech 24.

Tech – No way they stay that high with all of the talent leaving including early NFL entrants. As you show, the schedule isn’t looking bright for them either.

UGA – That’s an appropriate ranking today, but we will increase once we get our coaching staff filled in.

I’m a life long Tech fan and I don’t see how Tech should be in the Top 10. I think they will take one step back next year and hopefully two steps forward in 2011. UGA sounds pretty close. New DC, running backs looking good. But no QB with any experience. That will make things tough.

Mark Richt going after my boy is not permitted.

I will allow a number of Alabama prospects to carry out my commands at tech next year. CPJ is one of my boys.

Georgia will be lucky to win three games.

I will see to that.

I just don’t see how Tech would be ranked higher next year after losing their best 2 players on offense and their best 2 players on defense. Hopefully, someone knows something I don’t.
I always thought UGA was a WAY better team than how they looked. They just killed themselves with bad penalties and way too many turnovers. I will concede that on defense they looked out of position sometimes to make a play, but CMR finally fixed that problem.

Bad D and it’s coming back without it’s best players. Ugly!

Good O but it will be without many of it’s best players.

I’m thinking 7 or 8 wins, at best.

If UGA has a QB, and I think between the lot of them, they do. The O could be stellar.

I’m truly not worried about the DC thing. Many are having fits, which is silly. We’ll have a good man and we’re pretty deep.

9 – 10 wins, minimum.

TRUTH: “but Demaryius Thomas is the irreplaceable part, not Jonathan Dwyer. Given the nature of his offense, Johnson isn’t apt to find another receiver half as good as Bay-Bay.”

Yes, Stephen Hill has great hands, size, and athletic ability, but unless he spends 24 / 7 in the weight room, he will LACK Bay-Bay’s strength by a mile … and that difference will be noticeable.

FICTION: “The defense will surely benefit from a new coordinator, but not many defenses can lose its two most gifted players and spike upward in production.”

The other 3 positions on the DL next year will be SO MUCH better than this year that they will offset the loss of D. Morgan. Experience, talent, strength, and depth improvements will make the DL a net plus … even WITH Morgan’s loss. Same at Safety: Cooper Taylor and D. Reese will both come back healthy, and Jemea Thomas probably could have played more THIS year as well. Given the quality returning at corner (Tarrant, Reid, et al) to HELP the safeties, Morgan Burnett’s loss won’t hurt the team in a “net loss” way either.

And you can overstate the importance of a new D.C.

Special teams should be better, if only that all of the specialists / return guys are back.

So, … Tech will be better. The away schedule is tougher, but overall a wash. We finished # 13 this year; given the factors above, and what other teams will be losing, a pre-season ranking of # 8 sounds about right ….. -SJ

I agree Mark, Nesbitt was Tech’s version of Tebow this year. Except for the crying. Thomas will be hard to replace and we’ll have to run some different routes than just chucking it downfield. As much as I think of Dwyer, RB is the one place that Tech always seem to have somebody pretty good and Allen is very good. As for the D, the losses are big but I don’t think we utilized our talent all that well last year. Hopefully, a new DC will make up for their losses and then some.

“I appreciate my time at UGA, however I felt it was time to go to a program with an upside, I am tired of dwindling at the bottom of the SEC, and after many years of trying to cut into Tech’s many national championships, I have failed to do that. In closing Kennesaw State Football is the future, UGA never had a future (or even much of a past at that) and their big brother Tech will always be the most prestigious program in the state of Georgia. In closing, I would like to tell the UGA fans to go sit on a stick. Thank you and good day, Go Owls !”

From a GT perspective- Richt learns his lesson from Bowden and the A&M thrashing. This is college football- you can’t run a hands off program. These “kids” need oversight both on and off the field and that oversight can’t be delegated to so called “coordinators”. Unfortunately, show me a good college coach and I will show you a coach that is tired. UGA should be a top 10 program every year with the talent base in this state. Tech is fortunate to have a coach like Johnson and I trust he adds beef to the o and d line and makes a run at the ACC championship again.

Mark,
Now you will have all the puppy dawg fans crying that there is no way Tech can be ranked ahead of the Nationally recognized UGA program that played in Shreveport! Fact is none of these predictions mean a thing and the fact is the kids have to line up on the field and play.

Do the puppy dawg fans notice 3 yes 3 D Coordinators turned down their beloved National Power. Even with all the money they threw at them, they got a big fat “NO Thanks”.

I am a graduate of UGA and I agree with Clint Castleberry. It is going to be hard to win a lot of games next year at UGA with a new QB. I also think he knows more than Mark Bradley and the AJC should hire him to replace Bradley. South Carolina, please!! Spurrier is past his prime and can’t and never will be able to get the recruits to win up there. The state is too small and he is competing with Clemson, which is a better football program than SC anyway. He can’t get recruits in GA because he competes against UGA and GA Tech. I would play ball at Tech over SC anyday, like most kids.

For any coach to get Duke to 5-7 in two years is a coach Tennessee can be comfortable. Duke is usually lucky to win 1-2 games per year. In addition to the 5 wins, Duke took 3 other teams to the wire. Now think what he can do with the athletes at Tennessee.

Glad you picked UGA to win next year’s game as a Tech fan.

Tech – will continue to play well on offense with a ton of experience, returning 9 starters and many others who saw action last year. Defense returning 8 plus 4 who were lost to injury in 09. Tough away schedule but slightly easier out of conference schedule.

UGA – loses alot of experience on defense and will start a new QB. Much easier schedule than in 09 and will not have to play Alabama or LSU unless they make it to the SEC Championship.

Looking forward it!!

With a Red-shirt freshman QB with ZERO experience and a new DC I think the dawgs win 7or 8 games next year but no way they win 9. One variable in the equation is that we have the coaching expertise of Mark “FAKE JUICE/ FAKE TAN” Richt and his side kick WonderBobo coaching em up. Between those 2 bozos we will average about 100yds in penalties and 3 turnovers per game alone.

Tech is ranked a bit too high. I think UGA is about right. Nonetheless, if the Bulldogs simply WIN, they will rise in the rankings and be a top ten team again. That’s the beauty of playing it out on the field. If we win out over Mark Bradley’s up and coming Gamecocks, Petrino’s Hogs, a newly coached Tenn. & Kentucky, Florida, Auburn, and Tech…the rankings will fall right in place. Can’t wait til next season!!!

Bradley must have quit sniffing glue. He’s actually making some sense.

This could be the weakest I’ve seen the SEC East in a loooooooooong time. I don’t see a top 10 team anywhere. Not even Florida.

Bama will not have a (national) championship caliber defense. This could be one of those rare years where a team with multiple losses wins the SEC. Might as well be Georgia. Mettenberger and Murray are REDSHIRT freshmen. There’s a difference.

Tech will go 9-4, lose to Georgia, lose some forgettable bowl, and nobody will care. I think I just summed up the last 30 years of Georgia Tech football in one sentence.

I see that Techies are reverting to their usual exaggerations about UGA personell losses. Its really sad. Every year we’re losing our “entire defensive front” or our “entire secondary” or our “entire backfield” according to these idiots. Heck, after ‘08 they went so far as to say that we lost our “entire offense” due to the departures of Stafford and Moreno. I tried to tell them that we would in fact be fielding an offense in 2009, but they didn’t believe me. Maybe after rushing yard #300 they started to get it.

Its all wishful thinking of course. Its just really sad.

Wow! Tech at No. 8 is really hard to believe given our performance down the stretch and the losses to the NFL (stunningly overrated, in fact… I hope I am wrong). CPJ has worked miracles for us already, but he’s not that good. We have a long way to go, folks, before we think we can compete consistently at that level…

As for the prediction, I would simply flip it around: Tech 27, UGA 24… a close game, but CPJ will learn from this year’s debacle, and the team will have plenty to think about after the BS that went on in the pile with Nesbitt after the tackle (not to mention the quotes from Earley and others after the game… plenty of locker room material there…).

And a quick shout out to the Vols and their fans: Good riddance! Kiffin’s departure is a blessing in disguise… he will struggle mightily at USC, and the Vols will have the last laugh (particularly if they bring Cutcliffe back…).

How can you say that the ACC has not figured out how to defend the Triple Option? Johnson is 0-2 against Miami and 1-1 against VA Tech. Plus, you were lucky to beat a bad FL State team the last 2 years and barely beat Clemson the first time around and had to go to OT to beat a really bad Wake Forest team. Miami, FL State and VA Tech will be better next year and ALL have better defenses than GA Tech. Paul Johnson’s teams have always had bad defenses. Don’t count on having a much better D next year with a new DC coming in. The current players will have to learn under a new DC.

Tech will claim basically anything as a National Championship. They won the NPI or was it ZPI or something not sure whatever it is it doesnt even exist anymore.

If UGA used some of that Tech math they would have 5 National Titles to Techs four. Alas like the reasons we lost the games in 43 and 44 ( when patriotic UGA players were off at war while the techies sat that one out) we are too honest for that.

The big story is that Tech was ranked 8th. Why? Because of their conference as the Andy Staples noted.

No GT fan is going to honestly say we won’t miss Thomas. (not to mention the other three) However, Cooper Taylor is a baller and will be back next year for S. Dieke is Michael Johnson Deux @ DE. Anthony Allen is plenty capable as the B-back. (with some capable guys also behind him). Look, Baybay was very good, but he basically ran a) slant or b) sideline fly for a jump ball throw. Stephen Hill is capable of doing more. ie. it’s a minimum 5 yard gain if you give him a reverse because nobody can tackle him on first engagement. Chris Jackson is also a solid WR who CPJ can move around from a-back to WR. I still see Tech winning 8 or 9 w/o the bowl included.

IS SI ON DRUGS?

Who in their right mind would pick the Jack-ettes at 8 when they are losing 4 of their studs; 2 on a d that was already pathetic. VT will be better and FSU will be on the rise hopefully.

Did they not notice how an average Georgia team beat them in their best, most magical of years? Did they not that PB&J’s vaunted offense has only scored 10 points in the last 2 bowl games on the big stage when they play a quality defense? Their 2 minute drill should be on SNL!

Perhaps they are putting them at 8 b/c they know the ACC is garbage. IDK.

Not saying Georgia will be that great next year as we will struggle early, probably losing in Cola b/c of our new QB. But the Dawgs have top 10 talent on both sides of the ball and should be pretty darn good towards the end of the year…which does not bode well for the nerd herd/taliban.

As far as replacing our talented 4… S.Hill should (needs to get in the weightroom)add some muscle 10-15 lbs. D. Drummond at B-back ( I’ve heard is big and bad) 6′3″ 245 Solid with a 4.55 -40. Nesbit will have another solid year. Off.will do well. Young guys on the D-line need to step up and take charge. LB and secondary should be solid. Hope we get a DC that knows what they are doing. Cracker Jacket,

At least your not drinking what the others are. So good for you.

Tech fans saying the loss of their 4 studs won’t hurt is about as delusional as we were last year saying we wouldn’t miss a beat after Staff and Moreno left.

Take it from us: it matters and those NFL caliber athletes from your squad will certainly be missed. I’ve never seen a running back as big as Dwyer with such moves(wish he went to Georgia) and quickness. Allen is a big bruiser and should do well, but he ain’t Dwyer.

Nesbitt is the offense. He’s an incredible athlete..after he leaves, the Jaybo Shaw’s of the world take over b/c let’s face it….NFL caliber players are not going to want to play for PJ’s offense.

Still, Tech could easily win 9 games next year being in the ACC. Georgia hopefully will have around that number as well(hoping).

The Jackets may never own the Dawgs as thoroughly as they did during Dodd’s reign, but neither will Jacket fans define their lives solely in terms of a football game played at a university (sic) they never attended against a better university they also support with their tax money. It would be pathetic to point out that Tech owns the longest win streak in the series…just as pathetic as UGA clinging to a single NC almost 30 years ago as evidence of their elite status.

Makes me almost BLACK OUT thinking about it. Georgia vs. LSU? Those refs, those refs.

For Tech they return and add to the O-line. Nesbitt is the key to he offense as he was this year. yes in 08 Dwyer was key. Jones, Allen Etc can run the ball. The pass game may change and be a more short range pass but I feel Hill can take the long ball.

Defense, yes we lose two guys but Burnett was really not a game changer this year and if you want to look at losses, losing the three guys from 08 was a much bigger loss than one guy on the D-line.

Schedule yes interesting on the road but. Clemson on the road has made no difference to us. We don’t play FSU. Va Tech might be tricky and we don’t play well at UNC. In Athens, in my life time, 47 years we win more there than at home. I think 10-2.

Duke would have real reason to mourn if they lose Cutcliffe. UT felt betrayed by Kiffin because they had bought into all his USC crap for so long (many against their better judgment) and had to put up with so much peripheral static because of him…but almost everyone on the outside thinks they will really be better in the long run without him. Duke on the other hand got a good man with Cutcliffe, who really did well at Ole Miss before they ill advisedly canned him. I would be just a little surprised if Cutcliffe left Duke hanging, even for the better job at familiar UT, but not too much so.

Perdoni looked like Taxis’ Danny Davido but maybe 3 ” taller and 100 lbs heavier.

CPJ? Tech at 8th!? No, I don’t think so and they’ll prove it early. Figure 12th to 15th position after 3 weeks.

Dawgs at 22nd!? Quite possibly I regret to say. There is so much going against us except for the schedule that it’s hard to see how we can be a good team next season. But with some chips falling in the right places (and soon) we could easily go much higher – again, due to the ease of the schedule.

I don’t see how ANY UGA fan can blame Smart for staying with the best coach in all of college football. He didn’t drag it out either. Saban wouldn’t allow any of his coaches to speak to any other schools until after the NC game. Why would he leave a team that is on top for one that has been struggling for the last 4 years? I know UGA fans want to hear that but it is true. Our only good year since 2005 was 2007 and we got beat at home by a bad SC team and BLOWN out by an ok TN team. I am a UGA grad and I don’t blame him one bit. If it would have been 4 years ago when Bama was down, I am sure he would have made the move. Richt’s fault for keeping Martinez for so long. Plus, how much of that defense does Smart really control??? Saban is the defensive guru and a control freak. You know he has a LOT of input on the game plan. I don’t know if Smart has enough experience on his own yet.

Murray's right bicep tendon

January 14th, 2010

A Murray had an injured arm in summertime camp and Z. Mettenberg was a red shirt from the get go. Zack has Matt’s arm but loves UGA, as he is from the Athens area and his mom or both parents are employees of the university.

He has the cannon and he is a leader and he is very smart, says Tee Martin of UT NC fame in the 90s. Tee coached the kid in QB camp about two times and he said before Z signed with UGA or was ever heard of, that Z. Mettenberg has all the NFL tools to win big in Big Boy football. His arm was top gun rated at one of those big boy QB camps like Nesbitt DID NOT GET INVITED to.

No, Zack could not run the wishbone and yes, ACC is not Big Boy ball ……….like SEC is.

Excellent post CBB1! Those who want to throw knives at Coach Smart obviously did not read his comments made when declining the job. He said the ONLY reason he entertained the offer was because UGA is his alma mater. He wants to be a HC and that fact should not be treated as a slight against Georgia or as any flaw in his character. If he’s offered the HC job at Tennessee, then I think most of us would say, “Good Luck! See you third Saturday!”

Reality check is right on. There needs to be some system in place that doesn’t reward teams like Cincy, TCU and Boise for winning a conference game the same as it does an SEC team for winning a conference game. There have been plenty of 3 loss SEC teams that were one of the best 10 teams in the country, but due to the ranking systems schools like Ciny and Hawaii get ranked way up. And then when they lose the last game of the year, even after having a whole season of “practice games,” they are still ranked in the top 10 when they souldn’t have been ranked in the top 50. The QB’s at TCU and Bosie make Joe Cox look like Joe Willie.

The rankings don’t mean much as 08 and 09 proved. Who knows how many UGA will win. The last couple of years have been real screwy but they will beat Tech in Athens. By that game Murray will be well seasoned and he’ll have a good offensive line and a great bunch of receivers and two darn good running backs… the defensive takles are the question mark. Every other position (talent wise) will be as good or better.

30 to 24 maggots, 8 of 9 and 60/39… glad it hurts so bad.

K. Smart and UGA and The League

January 14th, 2010
9:11 pm

Smart will continue to grow as a coach like a red shirt ball player at any big boy college. He is being tutored or mentored by the BEST coach in NCAA today. Everyone that has an inkling about college football, knows that if Saban wins it all in 2010 and very, very likely he will, he will BOLT for the NFL or another big time school like Michigan. He is what he is. No big deal. He is a coach and he is the TOP GUN type of coach. I have no prob with the guy ………a winner he is.

Kirby?? He will become available again and he might be worth a look see as HC one day at either UGA or another BIG BOY school. Those of us that have turned “great jobs” down know that many things affect your final decision and timing is just one of them. You also keep your eye on the horizon or on your personal goals. We UGA grads are very happy with KS’s career progressing well and we wish him good things.

If we land that Cowboy coach and one or two of his NFL buddies …………UGA will have that path to the LEAGUE that today’s recruits seek. THAT has been UGA’s ONE deficiency. NO real NFL contacts in the UGA coaching ranks. THAT fact will change and soon. I can prove it with all the “talent” that liar Blame Kiffen assembled before he shafted them. They wanted conduit to the league. Now, UGA ( if we get the Cowboy coach (s) ) we will solve that one problem.

Better LB’s, better DT’s and more experience and depth at DB. By the way, for all you saying we will probably take a step back, weren’t there alot of people saying that about 2009? Why do people continue to underestimate Paul Johnson. Facts are Facts, this guy can coach. It may not always be pretty, but he just knows how to win. Last time I checked, that’s all that matters.

Just remember folks, GT ends up better than the preseason rankings. UGA ends up worse than the preseason rankings. Look at the last two years…

As for dwyer leaving: Anthony Allen can easily fill in, and get 1300 yards. Yes, JD was a stud, but his talents weren’t used to their max in this offense. He had east-west speed, but was used for dive plays 95% of the time. Also, defenses sold out to stop him. No defense will be selling out to stop Anthony Allen, which actually opens up our offense even more next year.

As for losing two defenders: we lost 3 DLs to the NFL last year, and still won more games.

He may end up back in the pros to try and make up for his failure with the Dolphins, but I doubt it. I would like to see it happen as a UGA grad, but I doubt he goes anywhere. He will have his down years like FL, TX, OK, USC. No school can stay on top forever. UGA and Richt can’t help it that they are in the same conference with the two best coaches in ALL of college football-Saban and Meyer.

We need to worry about getting better with penalties, turnover, turnover margin and quit worrying about every other team out there. If we improve on that and get a new strength and conditioning coach-Van Halanger needs to go-then everything will fall into place and we will start beating FL and TN more and start winning the SEC East again like the early to mid 2000’s. Van Halanger still thinks it is 1996 at FL State. Our strength and conditioning program is very, very weak. Getting beat by Kentucky 2 out of the last 4 years is bad.

2001-2008 UGA Average Ranking #10

January 14th, 2010
9:53 pm

Better schedule in 2010. Only 4 tough games.

Over Richt’s 1st 8 years, if you add up all the final rankings (80), divide by the number of years (8 years), gives you an average ranking of #10 over 1st 8 seasons.

Never had 2 bad seasons (8 wins) in a row.

Both times Richt has a bad year in the past (2001 & 2006–both 8 win seasons), he followed it up with either an 11 or 13 win season.

So, 2010, either 11-2, or 13-0, top 10 final ranking.

Bradley…nice start, don’t you think?…If you want to do something worthwhile, and constructive, how’s about lobbying with the Sports Council, Gary Stokan, Chick Fil-A, whoever, to have them land a USC/Tennessee match-up for that kick-off game they’re so antsy about. It would seem to me that UT would absolutely cream over the opportunity – sell the place out by themselves – and as for USC, if Lame Lane won’t go along with the deal, then at least he’ll have wimped out in front of God and everybody…along with the entire PAC-Few.

Mark is predicting 2006 all over again. That could very well be the way it all shakes out. I’m sure the Tech fans will be happy to play in another ACC championship game…UGA gets the win though. I guess Reggie Ball is going back for Grad School.

GA was actually pretty good that year. The O-line really let us down and I never felt like the Lumpkin-Ware-Brown rotation worked to it’s potential. However, the defense was still respectable and we had some pretty good skill guys.

I think there is reason to expect the O-line to play better in 2010 than they did in ‘06. Searels was billed as the best offensive line coach in the SEC and the linemen definately have some playng time under their belts. If they can stay healthy, we might have a pretty good group.

I also think 2 running backs are better than 3. It never seemed like any of the backs could get hot when Coach Richt alternated a series between Lumpkin, Brown & Ware. A good running back gets better over the course of a game and it never seemed like any one back got a chance to take over a game.

We’ll see about 2010. I’m optimistic even with a freshman QB. A good Defensive Coordinator could make a world of difference right away. I see atheletes all over the field. It just looks like guys are out of position and the arm tackles have got to go…Those things seem like coaching issues to me.

I really hate to root for Brett Favre but if Grantham is the guy, it’d be great to have him making calls to recruits next week.

Thanks CBB1. Good luck to the Dawgs AND the Jackets next year! The South is obviously the cradle of college football and we need to remain strong to continue to shut up those PAC 10 and Big 10(11) posers. I’m obviously a third party in your fight, but I think UGA and GT need each other to be strong programs simply for the thrill in beating them and the national recognition that comes with it. I hope Auburn goes undefeated until we play them every year.

I would rank Georgia 12th starting next season I dont really see too many teams that will beat them on their schedule. Oh and Matthew Stafford got thrown in as a true freshmen , Aaron Murray already knows the playbook in his sleep and is a better athelete and will be a better college quarterback then matthew stafford ever could be. Aaron murray will be a redshirt freshmen, same as david greene was when he lead the dawgs to a 13-1 season.

The UGA program will prove once again to be the strongest in the state for decades to come sweethearts. Tried not to get robbed or punched in the face because then you would be stupid or something.

Sports Illustrated should stick to swim suits. GA Tech # 8? Serious? Nah! Look, this offense of Johnson is going to be in its 3rd year. Defenses are catching on to this thing. There are no Herschel Walkers at Tech. Against weak defenses in the ACC, Tech will win games. As for national ranking – when will all know that the ACC has a long way to go. GA could easily move up to #8 though the QB issue is rightly a sticking point at the moment.

The SEC only got 2 teams in the top 20 with 2 more in the 21-25 range. Guess which two are in the top 20? Basically, the SEC has lost it’s parity and that is weakening the conference. A recruit that goes to any SEC school other than Ala, UF or, to a lesser extent LSU has little chance of winning the conference and playing in a BCS bowl. Reminds me a little of the ACC when FSU always won.
The ACC coastal division, by itself has 4 in the top 20. Imagine how the SEC east would puff out their chests if THEY were the ones with 4 teams in the top 20.

SI 2010 rankings? We haven’t written the first chapter of this book yet. How can you even begin to gauge your 2010 rosters? Both teams are in flux defensively with no coaches, the 2009 classes haven’t been signed yet, both teams have a spring practice to go through, weight lifting, eligibility, personal problems, legal problems, money problems, baby mama problems, etc., etc., etc.,

How will the “Sheriff” do without Chan’s bullets? Transition Gailey’s recruits with CPJ’s recruits. Let’s see what all the fuss is about.

How will the new DC maximize the potential talent of the Georgia defense? Will Murray/Metz be able to “manage” the games without making too many freshmen mistakes.

Tech will not be top 10 next year, maybe not even top 20. Take a hard look at the schedule. Clemson, NC, VT, Kansas & UGA on the road, Miami at home. I can make a case for 5 losses there. And do not turn your back on MTSU (home). The 2009 schedule was a cream puff compared to this.

I picked GT, UGA & the Falcons to all win 8 games in 2009. Tech is the only one I missed badly. Today I will pick GT for 8 wins in 2010 and to miss out on the ACC championship game. But, of course, I will hope I miss it like I did last year.

Mark, you actually typed this:

“Yes, South Carolina lost to UConn. But Alabama lost to Utah in its bowl last season. How’d Alabama finish in 2009?”

Please let us know when South Carolina gets the same level of talent as Alabama. Here’s a pro tip: It will not be in 2010, or anytime soon thereafter.

As for the ranking, it’s shocking that Staples has GT #8 even after Dwyer, Morgan, Thomas and Burnett announced leaving for the NFL. They are still a top 25 team, but they are going to experience some growing pains next season without their best RB, WR, DL and DB.

UGA in the top 25 seems right, although I bet many fans wish Aaron Murray would have had some playing time this season to be ready for the helm in 2010.

MB, What yo said rings true unless GT has a better defense. If that is the case, 11-1 will be the final tally with GT winning games 20-17/21-14 instead of 40-35 lol. Defense is the GT wildcard. At least they will easily beat Georgia next year and for that, we are all happy.

Rankings

January 17th, 2010
12:18 am

As a GT fan, I always thought GAWGA was a much better team than their ranking (or lack of) showed. Penalties and coaching killed them.

GT should be ranked around 12 or 13. I’ll still take it but I do not think the losses will be that noticeable EXCEPT at the wide reciever position. We are loaded at A and B backs and when Dwyer didn’t get 100 yards, the others stepped up and did. Johnson’s offense is designed to give backs big yards regardless of elite skills. Allen will step in just fine and we have some great players to back him up.

A new DC will inject new life into a shaky defense and we do return (2) starters who missed most of the season. That offets the loss of Burnett. Replacing Morgan is a big task but moving to a 3-4 d minimizes the loss.

I see Tech being at least as good on offense, the scheme is the thing, the players are interchangable. Can’t be much worse on defense, so I see the 3-4 helping. We have several fast, atheletic linebackers, and that is the key in the 3-4. Got to stay healthy on both lines, that was a problem last year. Just cut an average of 5-6 points off the average given up last year, and it could be another title run! Can’t wait to find out…

I am a lifelong Tech fan and being a very talented engineer that is rich beyond any of your imaginations I am uniquely capable of seeing the big picture where others can’t. There is no significance whatsoever to the loss to UGA and Iowa. It means nothing that our overpowering offense has scored 10 points in 2 bowl games. What GT fans have to focus on is the monumental achievement of finishing #13 in the nation. #13 guys. Do you realize how big that is. More enlightening is the fact that after losing 2 out of our last 3 games we STILL finished #13. A lessor team would have dropped to at least #20, which in itself proves that GT is a giant in the minds of those that rank football teams.

Top 10 ….. one team from the SEC. two teams from the ACC. Things that make you go hummmmmmmmmm.

I’m glad that Tech is ranked highly pre-season – even it they don’t deserve it. That is because unless you are highly ranked pre-season there is no chance at all of moving up in the top 5 (or at least it just doesn’t happen often. Tech needs to just keep winning and everything will take care of itself.

Let the uga pitiful fans have the “larger” stadium, the “higher” ticket sells, blah, blah. We just want the wins.

Let them continue to call us a ‘high school offense’ all the while they lose with whatever you call that mess that they run. We just want the wins.

Hey UGA: Tough schedule next year with Louisiana Layfette, and Idaho State. Colorado was 3-9 last year and suxs. Vandy always suxs, as does Miss State. You talk about the almighty SEC, but your in conference and out of conference is a joke. You still lose 4 games. Those being: SC, UF, GT and ARK. You might even lose to Auburn and Vandy. LMFAO. What a joke. Get a real schedule. Let’s see how many of the teams you play are preseaon ranked in the Top 25 compared to GT’s schedule. Enough about the SEC. Your team suxs azz! THWG!

Atlanta GT:

Better look out for Louisiana Layfette. They are a powerhouse. Hey, maybe your crappy running back can jump one of their players like KNOWSHOW did against the Chippewhos!

It even get’s worse for 2011, as you play Army and the Coast Guard. I love it, a homo and homo series with Army. What a joke. The Coast Guard might be able to keep your sorry azz team from sinkng, but I doubt it. As for Grantham, he looked awesome in the playoffs. LMFAO! THWG!

January 18th, 2010
1:21 am

Atlanta GT… You are talking about a tough schedule. Please stop talking.

The best two teams in the weak ass ACC got beat on the same day by two mediocre SEC teams this year. Then Tech got stomped in their bowl game again, just like last year.

The only reason Tech has any moderate success is because of the joke schedule you nerds get every year. Don’t talk about schedules.

Every time you play a halfway decent SEC team you get trounced.

Wade Norton

January 18th, 2010
3:11 am

I love you Tech people. You beat us once every 10 years and you wanna play the academic card.
These are the facts:

1. Tech cannot compete in recruiting with Georgia and other Sec teams because the average attendance is about 35,000. Look at the past Acc championship games and you will know what I mean. What top recruit wants to play in those stadiums when he can play in front of 90 to 100 thousand in the SEC.

2. The ACC is a very weak conference. I think Georgia and Clemson proved that. What top recruit wants to play in a weak conference.

3. Tech doesn’t support their football team, even when they are winning. The past two Acc championship games Tech played in are proof of that.

4. Tech has very low expectations of their coaches. When 7 games every year and go to a bowl on a blue field and You Tech people will let him hang around a while. Chan Gaily is proof of that.

5. Georgia is not a very big game for Tech( quote CHP), but you Tech people bring out all of the excuses every year. I think CPJ will wake up and realize that it is a big game. The Ga. Ga Tech game has an impact on recruiting.

6. The great chosen one(CPH) is not the God Tech people and the AJC think he is. Good teams will beat the triple option. Lucky for CPJ he is in a weak conference. In CPJ only two seasons at Tech the triple option has only scored 10 points. That is fact, and good teams will beat Tech.

7. CPJ will never get a top rated quarterback at Tech. What top rated quarterback wants to hand the ball off every play. You have to pass the ball to beat good teams. Make Tech pass and they are beat. Proof is Ga. and Iowa.

8. Top recruits wanna play for good coaches. If CPJ is such a good coach like you Tech people think he is, why hasn’t he been mentioned in any coaching openings. Let’s face it Tech is not one of the top programs in the nation. That is also fact, and another reason Tech can’t get the recruits.

These are the facts Tech people. You keep playing the academic card and we’ll keep beating you every year. Oh yea, Tech has a lot more talent in basketball, what’s the excuse for that?

With Georgia running the new 3-4 Defense I suspect they’ll have an edge for a few years in the college football ranks, just like it effected the NFL when so few teams used it. Eventually, if successful, more time will be spent practicing against it in the off season and it’ll wear off.

Gt4ever

I have NO idea how anybody with any football sense ranks GT in the Top 10. I mean, how in the world do you rank a team that high, based on how they finished, based on the key players they are losing….. We had NO defense the whole year, and we lose our best players on the defensive side of the ball… We lose the last 2 of 3 games we play, the first being a very AVERAGE UGA team, and the second to a big 10 team that had trouble winning all year… I’m sorry, but our Offense stunk as bad as the defense and we lose arguably one of the best running backs in the country, and some MORON ranks us Top 10… Wow, I personally wouldn’t give us a top 25 ranking after the last 3 games, but that’s just me….

Maybe so

January 18th, 2010
8:34 am

I think that is pretty much a no-brainer. GT has next season locked down. Doesn’t mean they will beat UGA, I just think that the Dawgs have a better shot at going 6-6 and GT going 11-1 than the other way around.

Have you noticed that even the Dooley’s are abandoning the thuga worshipers? Tech is at fault for not getting up for the Athens minor league teams in either football or basketball and losing. All that thuga has to fell proud of is defeating an ACC team they claim to look down on. As much as they brag about an “assumed” event, it sounds like long term envy to the rest of us. As for having a better APR, anyone could have a great progress report getting through a non-academic club like thuga. Embarrassment to the rest of the SEC. Coach Dooley & family, welcome back to a quality team. Tech, we miss you and wish you would replace thuga in the SEC.

Win or lose, Georgia Tech will be playing legitimate student-athletes who are working toward real degrees at a school with very tough academic standards. UGA players, on the other hand, are – for the most part – enrolled in silly, worthless degree programs (that they seldom receive) that no one not on an athletic scholarshiip would waste their time and money on. Furthermore, these unprincipled, undisciplined barely literate athletes have a penchant for getting themselves arrested.

So, yes, UGA beats Tech most years, but how can anyone from UGA be proud of these hired goons.

Jan Kemp exposed the UGA athletic program for the farce that it is, and very little has changed in the two decades that have passed since that time.
