This energetic fellow is Kirby Sma ... er, SMART
I know it’s an anxious time for many of you. Heck, it’s an anxious time for me, because I’m not sure where I’ll be today. A brief explanation:
The Falcons are having their customary season-ending press briefing at Flowery Branch at 3 p.m. That was to be my destination until Georgia Tech announced a 1 p.m. session with juniors Derrick Morgan, Jonathan Dwyer and Morgan Burnett. So that’s where I’m going, as of this moment. I attach the qualification because there’s a chance — a “chance,” I said – something could happen in Athens.
Tech is also having a 9:30 a.m. session with Paul Johnson on Wednesday. It’s described as a season-ending wrap-up, and that could be all it is. But Johnson is believed to be attending the coaches’ convention in Orlando these next two days, and … well, last I heard, Tech needs a new defensive coach. A coordinator, if I’m not mistaken.
Yes, I know. Georgia needs a DC, too. And speculation is so rampant a guy could make an innocent little mistake — I swear it was innocent — and touch off a veritable Twitter-storm.
Last night I attempted to enter the words “Kirby Smart” as a personal Twitter search. But somehow I ended up Tweeting– meaning submitting for mass viewing — the message “Kirby Sma” instead. And within 10 minutes I was deluged both on Twitter and Facebook by Georgia fans wanting to know what I knew and why I was being so mean by teasing them like that.
(A brief aside: I would not advise anyone to follow me on Twitter. But if you’re tempted nonethless, I’m @markbradleyajc. I cannot guarantee you’ll be happy with the results.)
As I tried to explain/apologize, I wasn’t teasing anybody. I just messed up. But some folks weren’t buying it. Were I they, I probably wouldn’t have, either.
So, in the attempt to mend Twitter fences, I’m offering the very latest information this so-called journalist has at his disposal. Claude Felton, Georgia’s Hall of Fame publicist, told me late last night that there is no press conference scheduled. That doesn’t mean one couldn’t be arranged in 10 or 15 minutes, but I’m telling you what I know. Which isn’t as much as I’d like to know. But it’s all I have at the moment.
If things change, I’ll drop you a line on Twitter. And I promise it won’t read: “UGA has announced its new defensive coordinator and his name is … “

woohoo is the same one that posted Curran was staying. Smart may well come, but I’d trust Rosie O’Donnell guarding a plate of brownies before I trusted the word of woohoo.
That was hilarious!! I seriously laughed out loud!! Thanks, I really needed that one!

SOUTHGADAWG88,,,, that would make sense to me. Like I said, I don’t want to seem rude, but IF he even has a contract in hand, and has had it since Saturday, I feel it is time for a decision. The money is great, and either he wants this position or he does not, end of discussion ! If not, lets just walk away friends and go on down the road, but I feel we really need to get something going here.

How long before the AJC article that compares how wonderful it makes Johnson to have players leaving for the NFL with the utter failure of Richt to have the same?

Clint, I’m with you. It’s getting a little ridiculous. If it’s that tough of a decision, maybe he should stay at Bama…

123456789,
I’ve asked you before, but I’ll ask you again. Please cease commenting on the DeCory Bryant case until you actually know what you’re talking about. What I mean by that is, explain to me why and how sovereign immunity does not apply. Also please explain how a case that was decided in the Superior Court of Athens-Clarke County will be appealed to any Federal Court of Appeals. When you have legitimate answers to these questions, please feel free to post again. Thank you.

PONTE VEDRA DAWG …..You are reading my playbook exactly ! I mean come on,,, is it really that tough of a decision to make ? Like I said before,,, I have been a loyal and proud Georgia Bulldog man for many,, many years,,,, long before KS was even born, and I do not believe in having to beg anybody for a position at Georgia.

Kirby Smart, all thing sbeing equal pay wise between Georgia and Bama, will come to Georgia so he can get credit for being a defensive guru. Then you get into the tie-breaker of emotion–it’s his school, his wife’s school, his home state…..basically, even if it’s close financially, which I don’t think Saban will offer to match because he doesn’t want a big gap in pay among staff, Smart easily chooses Georgia. Not close from a practical or emotional standpoint.

Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart has turned down an offer to join the coaching staff at Georgia, Nick Saban confirmed today.
“Kirby (Smart) is going to be staying here at the University of Alabama with us,” Saban said moments ago at a press conference to announce Rolando McClain is turning pro.

Georgia Grads (me included),
This hurts. What now? Are we going to wait on a guy in Dallas who may or may not come? This is starting to get embarrassing. Even if some people out there did not want him at UGA, most of us did. Richt has completely overestimated his ability to recruit coaches to UGA. This is not a good sign. Goodbye recruits….

David Pollack, who initially reported he was coming to UGA, is now saying that he is staying at Bama. Pollack, who massacres the English language in his recent post, parlayed that Smart signed a term sheet to be the new DC but then changed his mind. Now, how much of this is true is hardly known. Smart may have been turning UGA down from the beginning. These insiders, such as Pollack, know about as much as any of us….which is next to nothing. Maybe this whole debacle will be a wake up call for those of us who follow ex-athletes and random sources as bearers of the truth. They are apparently not as “in the loop” as they think they are….

Look at the bright side, a freshman QB proved that the much ballyhooed D of Bama can be scored on…twice! We are going to be fine; we have some good recruits coming in. Bama and UF may have more Blue Chippers than we do but they can only play 11 at a time just like us.

We still have no one to coach these good recruits that are coming in…Furthermore, if we can’t find someone soon these good recruits are going to become good recruits signing someplace else. This is ridiculous! What has happened to Mark Richt and his lack of control over a situation? This has been an embarrassing and frustrating process that has been fumbled and bumbled the entire time.
