Live from Tech-Duke: Something big MIGHT happen

Zachery Peacock claims a carom against the Dookies in 2009. (AJC photo by Pouya Dianat)

Given the run I’m on in 2010 – only in its 10th day! — I hesitate to say anything. But it’s my nature to tell you folks what I expect to happen, and here’s what I expect:

I expect Georgia Tech to play well.

I’m not predicting a GT victory. (As we know, that would guarantee a GT loss.) But any good team that has had to endure the criticism – much of it from this correspondent – after losing to Georgia is all but duty-bound to give a stirring account of itself in its next game. Even if that game happens to be against a team ranked No. 5 in the nation.

Duke is the anti-Tech: Not outrageously gifted but outrageously sound. Its coach is the second-best ever. (Ron Jirsa being the unchallenged No. 1.) But Duke isn’t going to overwhelm the Jackets physically, and they’re past due to play well. And if they’re going to post a victory that will grab the nation’s attention, today’s the day.

But I have, as you also doubtless know, felt that way before. And Tech has won but two of its past 26 games against the minions of K. (The exceptions: At Cameron Indoor Stadium in March 2004, a game that presaged the Jackets’ surge to the Final four, and in January 2007 here.)

I’m here at the Thrillerdome, and already I wonder about the crowd. I saw bunch of folks in blue queued outside. And it is cold outside. But the roads  — at least I-75 and 10th Street — are fine. Sidewalks along 10th are still snow-covered, so watch your step. But I’d think if a Tech fan had a hankering to catch just one game this season, the Duke tilt would be it.

Not that I’m in the business of selling tickets. That’s Dan Radakovich’s task, and I see him as I type. And he’s not wearing blue.

With that, I’ll turn it over to Willie Martinez and Sonny Clusters and anyone else who cares to join our shenanigans. And just remember: If Tech wins, I didn’t exactly tell you so. But I did kind of float the balloon.

I suppose Tech will give a good effort, but I’d be surprised if they won. Tech’s offense reminds me of the Hawks’ offense sometimes (Iso-Joe). Similarly inept offensive coaching.

Though if any team is going to try to one-on-one it the whole season, Tech could do it with Favors and Lawal. Got to start using Favors, though. He’ll be gone in June.

GT fans we all know how hard it is to win at Miami..let me tell you about Tenuta..in 2005..the GT defense held Miami Hurricanes SCORELESS in 2nd half and GT won 14-10! In 2005, defense keyed the Jackets’ road victories at Auburn and Miami in 2005 as Tech allowed a combined total of 80 yards rushing to the two Top 10 teams while collecting 10 sacks and forcing six turnovers. Tech held the Hurricanes to 237 total yards It knocked Miami out of the BCS! In 2007, Tenuta won again in Miami. HIRE THAT MAN! It is a dream team-Paul Johnson and Jon Tenuta

I’m starting to think the best that can happen today would be for Tech to lose by 40 in a half-empty “thriller dome”. Paul Hewitt is a nice guy, with good recruiting skills, and apparently zero ability to coach his team/players up. If he can’t make some noise with this years talent, he needs to go. Maybe the the best thing that can happen this year is for them to fall on their face, simply to force the issue.

The coaching disparity between these two teams today will be GLARING! Just watch the game and see which team seems “coached”. I hope I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure I’m not.

Seeing the ‘85 players back in the ‘dome really brings home exactly how far we’ve come since then….unfortunately, Hewie has burned most of it all down in the past three years. Those Cremins teams weren’t always dominant, especially in the first couple of “building” years, but they were exciting and even inspiring. They regularly exceeded expectations whereas Hewitt’s teams consistently fail to meet expectations. I just spoke with a couple of juniors on campus who generally attend every FB and BB game at Tech, and they were sitting in their room watching the game on the tube. Their explanation: “it’s cold out–it’s never too cold or rainy to go see the Jackets, but we’re just too weary of watching CPH’s teams keep it close and then throw the game away late…we’ve seen it too many times already, it’s too cold to get out just to be disappointed again”

Mark, bet you’d rather be covering UGA-UK?

CPJ’s choice wreaks of desperation, the games they lost are the ones where he stubbornly tried to pass with a one dementional run offense. CPJ knows he’s gone as far as he can go now. Better hope to beat a top ranked FSU and Miami team to ever make it any further. The ACC is just too low on the totem pole without the big-timers.

I don’t know what they’ve done differently, but this was about the best free throw shooting performance we’ve seen from a Tech team in years. 22 points from the line, shooting nearly 79% … and with a very balanced attack. Four different players shot six free throws each, and Favors also made three of four. If we could do that consistently from now through March, we would likely be at the top of the league come tournament time.

You right Mark, something BIG has been going on, the Gator got 3 FIVE STAR players in 1 hour at the Army All-American bowl. They represent the #5, #9 and # 14th ranked players in the country. The Gators are the #1 class in the country as rated by Rivals.com, Scout.com and ESPN. NOW THAT’S BIG, NO THAT’S HUGH.

GT is going all the way this year. This team CPH has will be something special by the time the season ends. Sit back and enjoy the ride. See, they won an ugly game today, that they lost last year. Iman, Gani, Bell, Peacock have some young troops that will only get better. I told you last that CPH will get that ring this year.

Good win. I also have issues with PH’s ‘in game’ coaching, player development, proper schemes given the talent on hand, and general lack of fundamentals (i.e. turnovers, free-throw shooting, passing, etc.).
It would be helpful if we had a 3-point shooter that was consistant (Dennis Scott – where are you?).
Maybe he gets better or maybe he doesn’t, but I would still rather have him than RATFACE!!

Random thoughts:
- Favors needs some refinement, but after the run through the ACC, he will be much better than he is now (even though he is the freshman leader in scoring and rebounds in the ACC). It’s not rocket science – if he will be a lottery pick – he’s gone. It could go kinda like it did with Lawal.

- So far, it looks like Lawal made the right decision by staying another year. He looks so much more developed, both physically and mentally, than last year. Even his free-throw shooting percentage has risen substantially (one commentator the other night said he still had a hitch in his delivery like Tim Duncan, but, I guess the percentage is what matters}.

- With the loss of Lawal, and the probable loss of Favors, how big is it that the Jackets stole Dennis Miller from the leg-humpers? And they had the luxury of red-shirting him.

- For you Shumpert haters — he is the real deal! Cut him a little slack – he has been injured and will round into form – although I need to see him nail some 3’s regularly. He can handle the ball, but he needs to be our man at 2. We’re OK with Mufron at the point with Miller as his primary backup.

- I hope Holsey is on the Grady Jackson diet and CPH is able to land another ‘big’ with starting potential. Losing Lawal, Favors, and Peacock will be akin to the football team losing 3 D-linemen to the NFL last year.

- I have faith that Udofia can be an elite PG and I trust that he will improve on his shooting percentage and assists.
