It wouldn’t be the first time I’ve been wrong. Heck, it’d be the third time in three days. (Picked Georgia Tech to win Tuesday in both basketball and football.) But here goes:
I like the Longhorns tonight.
It’s nothing against the SEC. I’ve covered the conference for 30 years and I know full well it’s the best there is. But over those 30 years I’ve learned a little something else, and it’s this: Pay particular attention to an excellent team that’s being given no shot at winning.
Four years ago an undefeated Texas went to California to play for the BCS title and was dismissed out of hand. Because Southern Cal was shooting for a third consecutive national championship. Because the Trojans had not one but two Heisman holders on their roster. Because SC was regarded by us media types as the greatest team ever and therefore invincible.
But it’s a funny thing: Not many teams truly are invincible. Against the wrong opponent on the wrong day, anybody can be unhorsed. And the Trojans played like crazy, at least on offense, that night in Pasadena — I was there, and I well recall Reggie Bush flipping into the end zone and Dwayne Jarrett making like Mr. Fantastic to stretch the ball over the goal line for what seemed the clinching touchdown — and still got beat. Because Vince Young had the greatest single performance I’ve ever seen. Because Texas simply would not go away.
Alabama is a splendid team. Indeed, it’s trying to do something conference brethren Florida and LSU, each of which has won two BCS titles this millennium, couldn’t manage, and that’s finish unbeaten. (Auburn went through the SEC undefeated in 2004 but didn’t get to play for the BCS crown.) And I do believe the raging consensus about the SEC — that its best players tend to be faster than the best players from other leagues — is in fact a fact. But I’d argue that the Big 12 is the league that comes closest to approximating the SEC, and I would never discount an unbeaten Big 12 champ.
Having been around a while, I know how it works: We media types tend to work off the last thing we’ve seen. And on Dec. 5 we saw Alabama trample Florida while Texas nearly pulled a Les Miles and lost to Nebraska. And the Longhorns had a rough ride in College Station on Thanksgiving night against a Texas A&M team that Georgia just crushed without benefit of a defensive coordinator.
That said, no team wins every game by 50 points. At last check, Alabama needed a blocked field goal to survive Tennessee, which would finish 7-6, and the day after Texas struggled to subdue the Aggies the Tide had to rally to beat Auburn. But my point isn’t to derogate Alabama, which is a tough and talented and superbly coached; it’s to suggest those same descriptions apply to its just-as-undefeated opponent.
And we have to be careful when we try to graft one year onto the next. Different seasons bring differing dynamics. Just because Southern Cal had beaten the Big 12 champ (Oklahoma, which was undone when the nicely named Mark Bradley fumbled a punt he shouldn’t have touched) by 36 points in January 2005 didn’t mean the next Big 12 champ would succumb so readily. Just because the SEC has won the past three BCS titles doesn’t mean Alabama is a lock tonight.
Back to 2006: I asked Mack Brown at his day-before media briefing how it felt to have a team that good and be afforded so little chance. (Pretty darn good, he said.) And big-time coaches love these kinds of games. It isn’t often a program like Texas ever gets to be an decided underdog — the spread is only four points, but do you know many folks who are picking against the Tide? — and I’d especially be wary of an underdog that has the better quarterback.
Being my silly self, I picked Texas over Southern Cal back then. (No, it didn’t look good when the Trojans led by 12 points with four minutes left. But it worked out in the end.) Maybe I’m just trying to repeat my one moment of prognosticating perspicacity, but I like the same school to do the same thing in the same stadium.

Mark,
Your point is well made. I was in The Tide Camp until I saw them play UT. Tenn came to play ball that day and it was one damn close game. And we both know that Texas is a much better team than UT.
I think Texas could win this one.

I don’t know. I see your point, but I think Alabama will stuff the Texas ground attack. Texas will then have to rely on Colt (good one to rely on) and I don’t think he’s been hit in the mouth the way he’s going to be tonight. In other words, I think Alabama will make Texas one dimensional and by the second quarter, Colt will have happy feet as he looks to run from Mount Cody.

DawginLex : Mack and Watson Brown are from my hometown in Tennessee. My claim to fame with those two was tossing some pitch and catch with them back in those youthful days just down the road from Rocky Top. Yeah, we three amigos (U,me,MB) had Texas and Florida in The Game. I thought Texas could handle Florida but I’m not getting the same feeling with Alabama. I think Texas’ defense will surprise people that feel they can’t hang with Alabama, but I also think Alabama’s defense will play stout with McCoy/Shipley. In this game, my lower heart goes with my original pick (to thine on self be true) but my upper heart is tilting SEC. Ahhh, just give us a dam good game…

You make a good point. I have picked Texas in a Bowl Pool and am the only one to pick UT. I can’t shake the feeling that Texas has had a month to hear how good Alabama is. The Florida-Ohio State game a few years ago is the perfect example of the last team told they had no chance to win surprising people. I do think Alabama wins but a lot of people will be surprised at how good Texas plays.

Both of these teams have looked vulnerable at times this season. They have both needed some luck. The key here is to determine how these teams have been playing as of late. Texas barely made it into the Finals with a slight win over a marginal Nebraska team. While Alabama dominated a high powered SEC power in Florida in their last game. Hopefully we will have a good game tonight though.

I guess I can applaude your chivalristic love affair with GT and Paul Johson, but going against the SEC vs. Big 12 just to be the irritant in the prevaling wind is a just wierd. You can make all those great big 12, Texas, Vince young points you want, and STILL choose the odds-favorite…that’d be the SEC team. But I guess that doesn’t set your column apart in the vastly over crowded blogusphere does it.

people bring up the 2005 national championship game as though USC was unbeatable..heck, but for the Bush Push, ND beat them that year (people forget the referee also badly spotted the run by Leinart on the previous play or they’d never have had the ball at the 1). USC had its worst defense (except maybe this year) under Pete Carroll in 2005 (and it showed in the Championship Game and the ND game, at a minimum). Only the “press” thought USC unbeatable, anyone who followed Texas that year would have called it even, which it was (Texas had a better defense). Hardly the upset of the century (even all 9 years of this century).
To the “do you know anyone who is picking Texas” on the four point spread? Well, yeah, half the people betting are (that’s why the spread is four). Bookies don’t like more bets on one side than the other, that’s how they might lose money. Being blinded a bit by the SEC headlights to think no one else in the nation thinks Texas can win…

As an Auburn fan I am torn. I love the SEC and have pulled for every SEC team to win their bowl game, even the Gaytors. But when it comes to listening to the mullets proclaim another MNC, I start to hit my limits. So, I just hope it’s a game that’s so good it goes into overtime. If Bama wins I’ll be happy for them and the SEC, and if they lose, well, I’ll probably enjoy that in a schaudenfreudian sort of way. It’s hard to pick this game. Both teams have looked vulnerable in games this season, but I think Bama probably has the edge in impressive wins. McCoy has the experience, but Bama has a fantastic defense and will probably harass him all night long.

The Refs put Texas into this game. Big 12 replay guys didn’t want to cost the school the big game. Nebraska won. Tenth of seconds should not be reviewed. Could you imagine what the Cincy vs. Bama game would have looked like considering what florida did to them. Hopefully, Bama will not give the Refs a chance to sway it by winning big.

Mark, isn’t there a way we can turn this conversation back to Georgia’s DC search?
I completely agree with you. I’m not sure Texas will win, but I definitely think they could. I don’t have the same feeling I had in ‘05, when I had watched USC make great escape after great escape all season with a less than stellar defense. I am not at all a betting person. But that year I really wanted to take out a good chunk of change and put two thirds of it on Texas beating the spread and the other third on Texas winning the game. Florida’s seeming good fortune to even be playing Ohio State in ‘06 left me with a similar feeling: beware of siding with the media darling. (Remember No. 1 Ohio St vs. No. 2 Michigan being dubbed the game of the century? What a laugh after Florida crushed them.)
I don’t have the same feeling tonight about Texas; I think Bama’s lines may be just too strong for Texas to handle. Especially when the Tide defense plays its best it is pretty impressive stuff. (And tough, grunt, team-effort defense, unbeknownst to the star-struck media world, is what wins championships.) But, you know what, Texas just might be strong enough to pull it off. At least that’s what I’ll be hoping for tonight.

Mark,
I agree with you. I would also proffer the same thinking goes into Heisman voting. Ingram had 30 yards on 16 carries against Auburn. That’s pathetic for a Heisman trophy winner against a defense as weak as Auburn’s. The Tigers gave up 30 or more points eight times! This wasn’t a stalwart defense we’re talking about.
But against Florida, Ingram did a Yeoman’s work to get 113 yards on 28 carries, with no run longer than 15 yards. That and Colt McCoy almost pulling a Chris Weber-type brain freeze (along with poor stats) to almost lose to Nebraska. … Therefore, Ingram wins the Heisman.
Despite the fact that we finished the regular season with five undefeated teams, none of them have stood out as head and shoulders above the rest.

OK, so Alabama had a couple of tough conference games vs. the two most bitter rivals (one of which was the 8th consecutive game). To be expected, right? They also beat VT, LSU, won convincingly vs. bowl-eligible Ole Miss, UK, USCe, and Arkansas, and annihilated Florida. My question: what signature win does Texas have? The only convincing win vs. a decent team was Okie St. whom Ole Miss destroyed in the bowl. they played TWO teams in the final Top 25, none higher than 19th while Alabama handled three of the top 12 . Good luck ‘Horns, you’re gonna need it!

Give ur rb’s plenty or carries not 4 yes 4 carries once again like Florida dumb coaches did hint-hint it gives ur deffense rest. U can run on Bama remember Hardesty & Tate had good game’s. U need 150 yd by ur back. Just giv them 15-20 carries. Tebow had 73 on 10 carries. And last throw it deep 5 times Fla had at least 4 missed td’s because Tebow missed them.

Yes, it is the same school trying to do the same thing in the same stadium, but it is NOT THE SAME TEAM. Colt McCoy is not going to win this game running the ball like Vince Young did, and I am pretty sure Nick Saban thinks the same. I also picked Texas to win against USC because of Vince Young and the dual threat, but why on earth would I pick Texas to win against the fastest defense in the country, and yes faster than Florida and they proved that. Also, a Big 12 game is not even close to a SEC game. Bradley is talking about how the Big 12 is closest to the SEC but how is that when the Big 12 focuses so much on throwing when the SEC has the running, throwing, and better defenses. Bama wins 30-24…can’t touch the SEC!!

The biggest concern that the TIde will have is that they will be panalized for things that they have gotten away with all year. The fact that they have not had a holding penalty since the 3rd game of the season is telling. Nobody is that good or careful. It is kind of like the interception that wasnt’.
Having said that, the TIde is the better team, but Texas is a good team and could very well be sick and tired of hearing that the Tide is better. I don’t see a Utah happening, but Texas has two years of frustration built up and they may come on strong. I think Kriby beats Mack Browns offense. Will doen’t have the horses stop the Tide.

The Dallas Morning News picked Bama to win, so they’re not confident in my home state. I thank you, Mark, for going with the the horns. That’s my wish, too.
I want Texas to win, but will it shut up the constant nattering about how great the SEC is compared to God on down? No. But reality teaches us that in each year, each team is different. And each year, teams play in games that show who’s good and who’s not.
To think the SEC is in all ways superior to all other conferences over a long period of time, doesn’t really make sense. Especially since your teams rarely schedule games with other good conferences to figure out if you’re ‘in toto’ superior. Oh, and the fact that Vandy, SC, Kentucky, Auburn, Missy State, and Old Miss make up 1/2 the SEC is another sticking point in your theory. But hillbillies, dirt farmers, and re-enactors need to have something to hold on to, so everyone else ignores your foolishness.

I agree – my pick is Texas. Bama’s strength on offense is at running back, and that plays right into Texas’ strength on defense. How often do we see Heisman winners go into major bowl games slightly off their games? I’d say more often than not, probably because the last month has been a whirlwind of interviews and hype.

It’s tough to live here and listen to the Bama fans crowing, beating their chests, and hearing what little brains they have rattling around in their heads. Publicly “The Tide” has already won the crown over here. One part of me (the nasty part inside) would love to see Texas win just to see the anguish placed on the “annointed ones greatness”. The football fan in me wants to see a great game with Bama winning, one for the SEC, the second reason is I love the program and style with which Bama plays. Richt should take note and follow that blueprint for success.
Good luck Bammers, Mark could be right.

Are people forgetting that Texas has the 1 rushing defense in the nation. They will stuff Ingram and make McElroy beat them which he can’t. Texas doesnt have a rushing game at least from it’s runningbacks. Colt McCoy is the Texas running game and that is not all bad. Alabama will pay with being over aggressive against McCoy. Colt will run for over 100yds and throw for about 250 which will be enough for the win. I also mention Texas has 24 interceptions. That is second in the nation. Texas 28-24 over Alabama.

come on, the SEC had only 2 teams finish either 500 or worse. How many did the Big 12 have? 5. And every team in the SEC except one won at least 3 conference games where as the Big 12 had was worse in this statistic as well. The SEC’s worst teams would beat the Big 12’s worst teams, and the SEC’s best would beat the Big 12’s best. So yes i will think that the SEC is in all ways superior to all other conferences over a long period of time.

Mark, I think you’ve made a good argument in support of your pick, but I, an admittedly biased Alabama guy, think Alabama will win tonight. Texas doesn’t run the ball well and nobody has run the ball well on Alabama. When you become one dimensional on offense against a defense like Alabama’s with a coach like Saban you’re usually going to be in trouble. Texas struggled on offense against the 2 really good defenses they played, Oklahoma and Nebraska. I think McCoy will have trouble getting enough time to throw downfield and driving it down the field with short passes will be tough against tight man to man coverage. I think Alabama will have McClain or another linebacker spying McCoy to limit his runs out of the pocket.
If Texas can’t control the ball on offense, Alabama’s offense could wear down the Texas defense. Texas has a great defense, #1 in the country against the run, but they’re a speed defense that plays side to side against mostly spread offenses. They haven’t played anybody with a physical running game comparable to Alabama’s so it will be interesting to see if they can shut down the running game between the tackles. When Alabama starts making some plays both running and passing their offense becomes very hard to stop, as shown against Florida.
I think for Texas to win they will need to win the turnover margin (Alabama only had 10 turnovers all year) and maybe return a kick for a touchdown. Alabama’s kickoff return coverage has been a weak spot.
I’ll predict Alabama 27 Texas 13, but I have a lot of respect for Texas and it won’t shock me if they win. You never know what teams you’ll see after a 5 week layoff.

MB, anyone in the SEC can tell you Alabama is the cheatinest bunch in the entire conference. Do you honeslty think Ingram will graduate? These quarterbacks they keep rolling out seem more like junior country club tennis champions than leaders on the gridiron. Brodie Croyle? John Parker Wilson? Greg Macelroy? Seriously? I could see them all wearing white Izod Sweaters in a Birmingham Country Club!

The only people who are taking it for granted that the “underdog” Longhorns will get beat is mostly sportswriters like yourself, who have to compare this game (wrongly) to the USC/Texas game (seems to me that the Trojans of that year were being touted as one of the best teams of all time-just a “slight” difference in your analogy)..My Tide is a great football team, but make no mistake: Coach Saban has this team grounded and focused past the hoopla and the “David vs Goliath” crap that the sportscasters have been spewing. Remember, the process isn’t complete until we beat Texas. Until then, this is another step. ROLL TIDE!!!

The author makes a lot of good points but I would draw attention to something which is overlooked in the USC analogy. USC had a great offense it was their defense which didn’t play well and wasn’t on par with the offense. Alabama has a great defense and the cliche that defenses win championships has some truth. For that reason, barring flukes and unpredictable factors I will go with Alabama by a touchdown.

The difference in this game and that Texas vs, USC game is that it wasn’t Texas that wouldn’t go away as you put it, it was Vince Young that wouldn’t go away. And Mr. Bradley, I assure you that as nice of a young man as McCoy seems to be, he is no Vince Young as far as a college QB is concerned. Talk about the stats and all that kinda stuff all you want, but VY was a much better college QB than Tim Tebow, and I like Tim as much as any UGA grad could ever. VY won that game by himself. It wasn’t “Texas.”
The other difference is that USC didn’t have an overly strong defense. AL has the best defense in the nation and they have it playing in the SEC. D wins big games even when the O is ugly. And sometimes the O at AL is ugly. Mark Ingram isn’t even the best player on the AL team. I think maybe the 5th or 6th or maybe lower even.

Speaking of QB’s, who saw the Fiesta Bowl? Neither Boise or TCU have still played a team above mid ACC level. Those QB’s were supposed to be sooooo good. They made Joe Cox look like Joe Namath. Somehow in the rankings and BCS systems there has to be some gravity given to the actual talent level on teams. TCU had really good DE and linebacker and that’s about all the talent I saw on the whole field. Cincy, Boise and TCU shouldn’t have been in the top 25. Just because you haven’t lost games, it doesn’t mean you should be ranked highly.

I attended all of the games this year, home and away, and I can say that I’ve never seen a better football team. The Texans barely made it out alive against Nebraska, whereas Alabama mercilessly slaughtered Florida. I could be wrong, though i doubt that, but I foresee a game where Alabama will easily herd the Longhorns. ROLL TIDE ROLL!

The SEC sucked this year, They only had 2 teams with less than one loss!
East
Florida (5) 8-0 13-1
Tennessee 4-4 7-6
Georgia 4-4 8-5
South Carolina 3-5 7-6
Kentucky 3-5 7-6
Vanderbilt 0-8 2-10
West
Alabama (1) 8-0 13-0
LSU (13) 5-3 9-4
Mississippi 4-4 9-4
Arkansas 3-5 8-5
Auburn 3-5 8-5
Mississippi State 3-5 5-7

I predict right here, right now that LSU will win the SEC West and Tennessee the SEC East in 2010. Bama’s win over UT was a fluke with the blocked kick and Les Miles will right the ship and beat Saban at his own game of cheating in 2010.
Meanwhile get ready for Lane Kiffin to finish strong with the #1 recruiting class in the country, which will pay big dividends as the Vols dominate the SEC for years to come!

Look for Bama to outrush Texas, win time of poss, and the D to cause a lot of 3 and outs. McElroy will not turn the ball over. Colt’s a MUCH better QB than Tebow, so it won’t be AS BAD as Tebow was in the SEC Champ.
Texas will commit 1-2 TO’s, they just disguise things so well.

We was noticing Bevo the Longhorn mascot seems to be all one color and we was wondering if he was painted like poor little Russ was painted for the Independence Bowl? We would not want that job because it seems unpleasant and painting a mascot’s bottom seems like the last thing a team should be worried about before kickoff. When we was at Clemson for orientation we pledged a fraternity and we would steal the bell that belonged to this other fraternity and we would paint it green before we gave it back and we still laugh about it but Clusters knows that wasn’t the right thing to do. If we ever see those boys again we’ll buy them a Dairy Queen treat.

I would find it hard to bet money against either of these teams, because it’s only a guess as to who will win. But as you’ve pointed out, a team as good as Texas is being such an underdog makes for a perfect upset, if that’s what you want to call it. I believe it will be back & forth at first, both defenses taking over, but after half-time it’s who ever makes the best adjustments. I believe Alabama has the best defense, so this could come down to a 1-play game. Colt McCoy is hard to lay money against. If he soesn’t get rattled, Texas will win. If he does, and the Tide defense takes control of the 2nd half, then Bama will win. Either way, this game stays in the high teens or low to mid 20’s.

The contest weakened when McCoy went down. Anybody with a BB brain knows a true freshman BU QB with zero experience in these situations would still be worth a -14 minimum on a Vegas spread even if McCoy had gone down in the Big 12 Championship game and the kid practiced with the starting unit for 3 weeks…This BCSNCG is now the Alabama’s offense to lose. The Texas defense might be on the field for 20 plus minutes of the second half unless McCoy responds to the pain meds…Can we say Texas Toast..? Too bad. Bummer game but it ain’t over till it’s over.

It’s 17-6 inside the final minute of the first half. The Longhorns get the ball first in the third quarter. They’ve got all halftime — and it’s a long halftime in bowl games — to settle Gilbert down.
Instead: Shovel pass. Brown is right in that it’s the safest pass there is, but it’s still a pass.

So after not knealing in the final minute, scoring a meaningless TD to run up the score. The Bama QB gives the “horns down” sign. True classlessness shown by a team lead by a classless coach. But I guess they don’t call him Nick Satan for nothing, huh? Are you Bama fans proud of this championship?? Be thankful that UT’s QB went down early.

Why is almost every major prediction of an AJC sports writer almost always wrong? Way to represent the SEC, Tide. Congrats on a great season! The Gators are looking forward to visiting you next year for another great game. By the way, the Gators hired a new DC today…Georgia Edwards, the LB coach with the Dolphins and who many feel is one of the brightest assistant coaches in the NFL. Coaches at Georgia in ‘97. I guess that means we beat Georgia again…this time to the best available DC. Now, Dawgs just wait to you see Urban’s recruiting class for this year! The Tide and the Gators are going to dominate the SEC for years to come.

bradley, what’s your deal with sec schools, is your stinking jealousy eating at you that bad? A proper national playoff system would be to put the top 4 teams out of the SEC and let them play for the national title every year. It’a quite apparent how dominant it is. Oh! And by the way put that disgraceful bunch on north avenue on the same field with Buford high school football team…i’ll take Buford and give you 15..facts are facts!!!

We could very well see these same two teams in this game next year. Florida will be weaker and LSU just cant seem to get it done under Miles. I don’t see Saban letting up for even a second after winning this.
Texas will go into next year highly ranked and could run the table again in the Big 12 especially since Sug is leaving Nebraska

RollSEC, are you kidding me?? Are you saying that Bama hasn’t run up the score on weaker foes the past two years??? Unfortunately w/ the horrible way a NC is determined, ALL teams run up the score in order to impress voters.
ATLXmen, nice name. With a name like that, I bet youre glad school is cancelled tomorrow, so you can play Dungeons & Dragons all day long, huh??
Not only is Bama lucky that Colt went out early. They were lucky that the refs missed two pass interference calls on that 4th quarter drive after UT recovered the onsides kick when it was 24 13. If they even get a FG, it’s a one possesion game. Then UT scores on the next drive and takes the lead.
And don’t talk about Bama taking it easy after halftime. UT had a freaking true freshman in the game. It’s human nature to take your foot off the gas. The guy looked like a deer caught in headlights in the first half. He manned up in the second half though.
I give all the credit in the world to Bama, until the final minute, when the TEXAS raised QB gave the ‘horns down’ sign, and Satan decided to run up the score in the final minute. UT had no timeouts. They could have knealed and the game would have been over.
Act like you’ve been there before dude. Dont act like tricky nicky and act like “class” is a foreign concept.

jimmy ala wasnt lucky at all…those calls were correct your just looking for excuses. saben had ala go real conservative because they were up 24-6 against a team having to play a true freshmen because colt took a hit that didnt feel too good…
ala was never in danger of losing this game just in dager of not winning by 10 or more…texas was lucky ala went for a fake punt and the punter threw short…texas was lucky that ala player wasnt looking for a onside kick…texas was lucky that ala defense only played hard on third down most of the 2nd half…
admit it..the sec teams are just way better than most of the other conferences teams,

You SEC nuts crack me up. So to clarify, who is a Bama fan and who are the idiotic SEC guys just rooting for any team in the conference? How does that work for yall anyway?? How does a Bama or a Florida or LSU championship help out Ole Miss or Georgia?? Unless the SEC decides to get their all conf. team and play other conf. teams, its meaningless. I root for Texas. I was glad that Florida beat OU last year. Conference affiliatin means jack. It’s stupid, let’s see, the entire year i’m going to boo Bama and Florida, but at the end of the year i’m going to cheer for them? LOL
BTW, the only thing that kept Bama from winning in a blowout was the fact that Texas wasn’t going to bow down and quit, even w/a frosh QB. And Bama rolls over plenty of patsies during their conference. South Carolina sucks, as does Vandy and Kentucky. Don’t tell me those are tough teams. North Texas and Florida International are toughies too, you’ll tell me next. Don’t tell me that Bama doesn’t play their fair share of weak opponenets. Texas had a horrible NC schedule this past year. It would have been slightly better had Utah not backed out of a game to play the horns this year. I’ll give you that much.

Atlxmen, Colt said although he was in no pain, he just couldn’t feel his arm. Don’t you think it would be just a tad difficult to throw if you can’t feel your freaking arm?? It’s called a stinger.
