Tech's Paul Hewitt was brought low in Athens yet again. (AJC photo by Curtis Compton)
ATHENS – There’s a good team in there somewhere. Maybe it’ll show itself Saturday when Duke comes to Atlanta. It needs to show up soon. We’re into January now, and Georgia Tech still acts as if it’s just another collegiate aggregation. It could, and should, be much more.
“This team still has a pretty high ceiling,” Paul Hewitt said Tuesday night. He said this moments after his tall and talented team had run face-first into a closing door.
The Jackets came to Stegeman Coliseum to play a game not many folks watched — another Tech team was busy elsewhere — and for that Hewitt can be grateful. Tech fans, as we know, have seen it all before. But here, for late tuners-in, is a recap:
Once again the Jackets allowed a lesser opponent to dictate tempo. Once again Tech seemed determined to match every basket with a turnover. Once again it lost.
Yes, yes. We must credit Georgia at the same time we castigate Tech. The Bulldogs have one player (Trey Thompkins) who would make the Jackets’ 10-man rotation. Mark Fox is doing brilliant things with this undermanned team. And Hewitt … well, he’s not looking so brilliant.
Three days ago Georgia lost to Missouri by 28 points. On Tuesday it beat Tech and was the better team throughout. You kept waiting, as is always the case with the Jackets, for talent to have its way, but talent, as is often the case with these Jackets, meant little without direction.
Tech’s best play was an offensive rebound — it had 19 of those and 18 second-chance points. It didn’t make a trey until the game’s 33rd minute. Its famous freshman Derrick Favors finished with more turnovers (five) and fouls (four) than baskets (three). I hate to keep harping on coaching — really I do — but if you’re ranked 20th in the land and you can’t handle the team picked to finish last in the SEC East, what does that say about the man at the top?
It wasn’t as if the Stegasaurus took on the charged ambience of Cameron Indoor Stadium. The place was barely half-full. But Tech allowed Georgia to become the aggressor early, managing but 12 points in the first 11 minutes. You can’t do that on the road. You have to hit the other guy harder sooner. Tech did nothing but counterpunch.
The Jackets finished with 66 points. With their size and speed, they should be playing games in the 80s. But they don’t know how to press the issue without throwing the ball away. (They finished with 20 turnovers against 23 baskets and eight assists.) They’re young on the perimeter, sure. But they act even younger.
In the end it came down to Georgia making the assertive plays and the Jackets being unable to guard Ricky McPhee, who’s listed as 6-foot-1. When in doubt, the Bulldogs put the ball on the floor and made something happen in the lane. Thompkins drove for a huge hoop at the shot-clock horn, and McPhee, of all people, shook free down the lane for an underhand banker to clinch it.
Tech, by way of contrast, did its stand-around thing. When it got the ball low to Gani Lawal, it was OK. (He had 21 of the Jackets’ 66 points.) When it couldn’t, it was at sea. And that, sad to say, is the impression Tech has left after 14 games. It has won 11 times, but when put to the test by Florida State and now Georgia it failed. FSU is a decent-enough team. Georgia still has miles to go before it can lay claim to decency.
But say this for the Bulldogs: They know who they are and how they have to play, and they keep doing it. “We have limitations,” Fox said, “but we know what they are.” Contrast this with Tech, which has assets almost everywhere but doesn’t seem to know where to turn.

Great comeback victory for the UGA Basketball Program, especially after the blowout loss to Missouri. Glad to see another big win tonight vs. Tech, in addition to their recent upset victory over Illinois. Hopefully, under Coach Fox, they will continue to get better going into the SEC part of their schedule.

Often I have commented that Tech has a really bad coach! Good recruiter, but proves time and again he can not coach. This is a one year and done team that now may not make the Big Dance! How long before the Yella Bug Alumni yell like the Dawgs “old folks” did for a talent to lead their team! Every game gives me hope that the “round ball” product will become a tough ticket like fall ball in Athens.

Mark, You are to be commended for calling Hewitt to task for his failure to coach top talent and noting Fox’s good work thus far at UGA. However, your assertion that only Trey Tompkins would crack Tech’s 10-man rotation – whatever that means as Hewitt rarely plays ten players in any game – seems off-base. Travis Leslie remains a bit raw skillwise, but he’s a real force on both ends of the floor with his athleticism and hustle. In his 2nd year he’s averaging 13-6 and to date has saved his best games for the best on the schedule (Tech 12-4, Mizzou 18-5, Illinois 17-3, St. John’s 14-5 and VPI 17-7).

Mark, you’re normally not prone to hyperbole, but your statement that Thompkins is the only guy who be in Tech’s 10 man rotation is a little bit over the top. While GT is clearly much more talented than UGA, I think Leslie would definitely be in Tech’s rotation, and Price probably would be as well.

I am sick of hearing Mark and all he other AJC apologists continally making backhanded comments about Ga basketball when in fact we haven’t lost to Tech in Athens since 1974. And in the past 12 games we are 7-5 against them. We average almost as many fans at home games as Tech and that is without haveing a winning program lately. When we had Tubby and Harrick we filled the place. So quit saying we can’t draw.
As for poor Tech and Derrick Favors and the boys I said when they signed with Tech and say it again. They still have Paul Hewitt coaching so they won’t win or develop. Bet they are having second thoughts. When will these Ga basketball phenoms come on to Athens, get good coaching and help build a real winning program. My guess is it won’t be long with Mark Fox there.

Travis Leslie would start for Tech as well. He has just as much athletic ability as Favors, he just doesn’t have the height advantage like Favors does. Ware is a pretty good point guard. He quietly controls the tempo of the game, a lot like Wright used to do for the Dawgs. Hopefully, we can slip up on some teams in the SEC and build some momentum going forward.

Travis Leslie played a whale of the game for Georgia as well.
Ricky McPhee may not be the biggest or the most talented, but he’s usually the pluckiest player on the floor. I don’t know if he’d make the Tech squad, but he’s the type of player every program needs: a rock steady, court savvy, gutsy player.
I haven’t seen much of Tech (or Derrick Favors as I represent the redneck quadrant of the state), but Favors didn’t appear to have much floor awareness. He’s a beast, but unless he can develop a feel for the game, he’s just a slightly more athletic Albert Jackson.

the defense to hold the opposition to under 40% shooting from the field, and the offense to make less than 5 turnovers. Lets get away from the perfection BS, up the pace, and get a little more offensive.

How about a little unbiased coverage moving forward, now that we own this state in both big sports. BTW, when was the last time Tech beat UGA in Athens, I think I was like 1yr old. Happy 34 Yr old Dawg fan tonight, sat right below you too, so I know you had a good view!

I must say that Paul Hewitt is the WORST COACH IN THE ENTIRE NCAA. They have 2 top 15 picks on their roster and they still suck.
Meanwhile Bobby Cremins is whopping UNC with players the equivalent of Georgia State. Tech had a class act as a coach in Bobyu Cremins. Now they Paul Hewitt.
Now I know why Tech fans are half a$$ about everything.

I’ve been a Hewitt supporter. All throughout last year, I said on these same blogs – give it some time guys. We’re just a little unlucky.. next year is our time. No more excuses now. Its time to give Hewitt his pay out, and fire him. Looking at our schedule coming up, we can easily be 0-4 in the ACC.. and even worse. Right now, I don’t expect anything good out of this program. I only feel for Gani.. he could have been making millions right now.

Mark, please keep writing about the lack of coaching on this team. I have suffered enough. To sit through another season of a roster full of “Rivals Top 100″ players playing like Georgia Southern (no offense, you guys would probablay beat this heap) is embarrassing. It feels a lot like UGA must feel with their football top 5 recruiting classes every year, only to get punked most of the time by teams they can beat every year. The only difference is that Tech’s goofy coach seems to continually lose to his “arch rival” with regularity, whereas the same doesn’t happen on the football field. Enjoy it, UGA, you deserve it. Until our “superior athletes” beat yours, pile on…

Paul Hewitt has to go. Its as simple as that. If you cant win easy games with all the talent in the world then your time is up. 38% from the floor, 20 turnovers. Unacceptable. We had at least 4 possessions where our guys just stepped out of bounds. How can you expect to win games playing like that.

I went to Georgia’s opener against New Orleans. I didn’t think the team would win 10 games. Thompkins was clearly the best player on the squad, but I didn’t much of any talent outside of McPhee and perhaps Chris Barnes (I seem to be wrong on that one).
This is a totally different team than I saw struggle against the Privateers on their first night. Georgia still isn’t going to win many this year and they’re still likely to have games like they did against Missouri, but Mr. Fox has slyly built himself a little upset machine whom other teams shouldn’t look past.

I know Norm Parker is an old-school Midwestern guy near the end of his coaching career, and therefore probably not looking to leave Iowa after 10 years. But man, Iowa’s defense is impressive. Also, Iowa is one of the least penalized teams in the country, which screams great disciplined coaching to me and something that’s sorely missing in Athens of late. I’d say he’s at least worthy of consideration (even if it just gives him a raise at Iowa). Aim high, because you never know.

Mark I refer you to a point I made last year about a potential Achilles heel in CPJ’s offense.
As the broadcasters of the game pointed out, three of the last four teams that beat CPJ had more than a week to prepare. Jimmy Johnson pointed it out as well, saying it wasn’t that the layoff hurt Tech so much as it gave Iowa time to prepare.
Willing to rethink your position on this?

There are certainly several dates over the decades that I have declared as ‘Glorious’ for UGA – we all can name ‘em – but this one, 1/5/2010, has to go down as one more. For the FoxDogs to have played the vaunted JallerYackets off the court and then for that team from Iowa to have beaten that same JallerYacket football team – and their genius coach PJ – on a cold day in Miami (hell, it was warmer than that in Shreveport), was be-you-tee-full. Of course it won’t shut ‘em up, but now their crap will just be laughable.
As I said back on the last Saturday in November – it’s a pisser ain’t it boys, to know that all your arrogance and mouthin’ off has resulted in nothing but a long run for a short slide – in other words, you ain’t much and everybody knows it.

There’s a new coach in our future hopefully. No excuse to field a team with no playmakers. We’ve got two big men who’ll probably be in the NBA next year, yet, Hewett can’t seem to design plays to get the ball inside…excuse me, I meant to say, Hewitt can’t design plays period!
We’ve lost to three inferior teams(talentwise) already this year… We are sooooooo sick of this coach, yet, he’s a got a perpetual six year rolling contact. The jerk AD Dave Braine(less) gave Hewitt that contact, then promptly retired for medical reasons….OK I’ve said enough!

You look at the way Tech plays offense and it is worse than a lot of playground games. There’s no flow, no continuity, now clue. There’s no substitution patterns and nobody that can hit an outside shot. Shumpert was 1 for 7 with 5 turnovers. Hewitt says he’s going to put the 5 best players on the floor. So what is Shumpert doing out there? You can discuss more Tech hoops at: http://www.bbuzzoff.com

But things will get better because PJ will get better kids up front to come to the Flats. The away schedule next year is brutal, so don’t expect a repeat. But Tech will return to the BCS soon….now can someone explain to me why Favors is being taken out of the game when Tech has the ball in the last 2 minutes and put back in only for defense? I have been behind Hewitt since Day one, but losing to Ga this year is an abomination. Better find a way to stun Duke.

73-66 UGA Bulldogs’ Men’s Basketball team, with a far better Academic Progress Rate APR than GA tek’s men’s basketball thugs, beat GA Tek tonight 73-66. GA tek suffers only a 914 APR, and Paul Hewitt who has a LOSING RECORD to UGA Bulldogs, has been put on NCAA PROBATION with only 11 Scholarships allowed. GA tek has not beat UGA in Athens since 1976. Who has the better coach ? Clearly, UGA’s new basketball coach Mark Fox, who does NOT have a LOSING RECORD to GA teak as GA tek’s coach Paul Hewitt always has bad against UGA Bulldogs both on the court and in the classroom. Our players are NOT thugs. This team still has a pretty high ceiling,” Paul Hewitt said. That is a POOR SPORT. He should congratulate UGA on a not so surprising victory at all. Paul Hewitt is now 4-6 vs. UGA. Paul Hewitt is a bad coach and would have been fired years ago at UGA. At GA tek, they try to cover up his NCAA PROBATION and NCAA limiting him to just 11 Scholarships.
56-50 Women’s Basketball UGA Lady Bulldogs also have a far higher Academic Progress Rate than the GA tek women’s basketball team. Also, UGA Lady Bulldogs have NEVER lost to GA tek in Athens in women’s basketball. The GA tek coach, after last year refusing to shake Andy Landers’ hand after he beat the crap out of her team, this year did. It resonated throughout the college sports what a horrible POOR SPORT MaChelle Joseph is as GA tek’s women’s basketball coach. The score this year was 56-50. The better coach ? Without any doubt Coach Andy Landers.
30-24 Forcing Paul Johnson to scrap his high school offense, GA tek Heisman hopeful Josh Nesbitt threw 4 incomplete passes as wounded ducks to end the game. It was a devastating loss, leaving Paul Johnson to tell the GA tek fans (both of them) to hit UGA fans in the face. This is a POOR SPORT. This, while, Coach Richt beat GA tek for the 8th time in 9 years of 90-27 football including 2 BCS Bowl Championship Game WINS. GA tek has not won a Major Bowl Game since 1955, a span now in excess of 55 years. It also marked the 60th defeat of GA tek football and coupled with their bowl loss to bring Paul Johnson to 0-2 in bowl games, while Coach Richt is 7-2, it is a bitter pill to swallow for a football team at GA tek under Paul Johnson who has a far worse Academic Progress Rate APR than Coach Richt’s football team’s APR. The better coach ? By far Coach Richt.
It has been a BAD YEAR for GA Tek. A complete clean sweep. In all major sports UGA has far exceeded the Academic Progress Rate of GA tek. And, oh yeah, while we are on the topic, we have BEAT GA tek for this year :
73-66 men’s basketball UGA wins over GA tek.
56-50 women’s basketball UGA wins over GA tek
30-24 football UGA wins over GA tek.
A day to go down in Infamy for GA tek. It could not have happened to a worse group of losers, thugs, college drop-outs and POOR SPORTS. Congratulations GA tek, a clean sweep, in every possible fashion.

MEMO TO MARK: So do you still think that Tech has a shot at making the Final Four as you commented in your column before the loss to Miami? A few weeks have passed and I still can’t believe you made that comment. Why? Because you have watched Hewitt up close since he came here. Obviously, talent overcame coaching in the mirage called the Final Four visit 6 years ago. But now, not only is Hewitt’s coaching still a major weakness in the Tech program, but I say again as I did in my post the night of the Miami game—although you disagreed— that Derrick Favors is either vastly overrated or he is one lazy bum. Eight freakin’ points and 5 turnovers tonight from supposedly the #1 prep player in the nation last year?? What a joke! I have seen him play in person twice and on the tube a few more times, and I repeat: he is either terribly overrated or downright lazy! If he continues to play like he has in the season’s first 14 games, then there is no way he will be “one and done” unless some NBA team has totally lost its mind. Is the guy coasting while waiting for the draft and pay for play or what?!?! Don’t mean to beat a dead horse, but for someone who supposedly knows what comprises good basketball and coaching, I still shake my head when thinking of your Final Four comment. What in the world were you thinking?!?! Yeah, I know, regarding Favors you are far from the only one who was on this guy’s bandwagon.

Seriously GA fans, don’t put too much into this win over GT tonight. Paul Hewitt is a bad coach. The guy is something like 38 games UNDER .500 in ACC play over his GT coaching tenure. He’s had WAY too much talent to do that. It’s pure & simple about his coaching/leadership ability with this talent, and he hasn’t got squat.
Yeah, be happy that you beat your some guys wearing GT uniforms, but seriously, check back at the end of the season and see how bad this Paul Hewitt led team is. This win tonight won’t be that impressive. These kids are wasting their time coming to GT to be coached by this clown.

I wasn’t so sure about the BB coach hire of Coach Fox, but now I wonder what he would do if he had a REAL team? The former BB coach was big on discipline, which is admirable, but AFTER the fact. Fox is more into preemptive discipline. He must also be a good coach. If he is ever able to recruit it should be fun in the fall AND winter in Athens.
You know, I used to pull for Tech unless they played UGA. But after all the obnoxious fans that have came out of the wood work since CPJ has at least restored some respect to the program, my second favorite team is who ever plays Tech. This guy who posted above about UGA fans all being in trailers or driving pick ups should be ashamed. There are millions of people who live in trailers and drive pick ups that have more class and common sense than the Tech fans who post here.

Clearly, UGA’s new basketball coach Mark Fox, who does NOT have a LOSING RECORD to GA tek as GA tek’s coach Paul Hewitt always has bad against UGA Bulldogs both on the court and in the classroom. Our players are NOT thugs. “This team still has a pretty high ceiling,” Paul Hewitt said.

Mr. Bradley,
I didn’t read your article about Mark Fox being a bad hire, as a UGA grad and fan living in Reno, NV it’s a little difficult to keep up with the latest UGA news without constantly gluing myself to the computer. I am curious though as to how much you really researched Coach Fox to come to that conclusion?
Living in Reno for the past few years amongst the Wolfpack fans I got to know quite a bit about Coach Fox. He is a great coach and at UNR he consistently got the most out of players that didn’t exactly have big time program talent. He was able to pull some great recruits to UNR (by UNR standards of course) while he was there and I believe got them to a few tourney appearances and a sweet 16 appearance. Definitely known for being a very strict disciplinarian and the kind of guy that favors the team concept and doesn’t tolerate a bunch of individualistic garbage either.
All I know is that UNR fans were furious to lose him. When I’m out and about in the city wearing any of my UGA stuff I still get dirty looks. My wife’s boss who is a UNR grad was angry with my wife for weeks after the hire because he knows I’m a UGA grad…as if it was me that called up my buddies Michael and Damon and said “hey, I’m a random alumni and you ought to take a look at this Mark Fox guy out here in Reno” .
I think he’s a great hire for UGA. Do I think he’ll get them to being a consistent tournament bound contender…I really don’t know, I guess time will tell but I do think Coach Fox will improve the program overall and make it a lot better than it’s been in a while.

Paul Hewitt is the greatest underachiever in all of college basketball. Mark, you are correct to focus on coaching. Stay the course. Hewitt’s problem – his ego. He will never be able to lead until he finds a way to get his nose out of the clouds and find a way to communicate to young men with clarity and consistency. Give Hewitt the Hawks and he would go 7-9 in the ACC. That said, why would anyone buy him out? The money is better spend with Paul Johnson who will create a greater return on the investment. DRad must instead call him out publicly to the point where even he agrees he should polish his resume and find another job.

Guys I’m having a nervous breakdown. In the same night we lose the Orange Bowl to Iowa (((24-14))) and lose to Georgia in basketball (((73-66)))).
Georgia won their last two games while we managed to lose 2 out of 3.
My fellow Tech fans, it’s becoming increasingly clear UGA owns us as we’ve lost 8 out of the last 9 games and 5 in a row at Bobby Dodd stadium to the mighty Bulldogs. It should also be clear to us that Paul Hewitt is going to be schooled by Mark Fox for years to come. I’m also getting worried about our High School offense. It seems to me that every time we run up against a fairly good defense we get shut down. We’ve become too one dimensional! The option may work for the service academies, but it isn’t going to cut in the big leagues.

As a Tech fan, I am more discourage about the basketball loss than the Orange Bowl. We have the talent to be AT LEAST a Sweet 16 team in basketball. It’s obvious to everyone that our coaching is sub-par, at best. And if he can’t win the this group of players, he will NEVER win. Brad Sheehan may be starting at center for us next year. YIKES!
As to the Orange Bowl, just as the Georgia game, both of our lines were soundly whipped. It was frutrating to see Iowa complete a pass on 3rd and 6, when we drop 7 into coverage and the is STILL someone running free on a crossing route. The better team won the Orange Bowl. The better coached team won the UGA-Tech basketball game.

Tech needs to stop recriting blue chippers. They have one thing in mind…the NBA. Basketball is a team sport. Coach Hewitt cannot make the individual blue chip players play as a team. They have money on their minds not academics or the fickled Tech fans. Maybe its better to recruit white players from more affluent homes as was done in the old days.Duke does it well. That would eliminate the racial issue. Unfortunately, it will not win conference championships or NCAA tournaments.IT IS WHAT IT IS.

Mark, I kind of figured you’d take the “this is what Tech did wrong” angle instead of saying that Georgia just outplayed and outhustled Tech from the beginning to the end. Here were a few of my observations from the game last night:
(1) Dustin Ware was the best player on the court last night. He played all but two minutes and controlled the tempo and handled the ball almost exclusively against the Tech pressure. He also hit two huge 3-pointers, including the one after Tech momentarily went up by three points. He showed the importance of good “in charge” guard play.
(2) I was blown away by Derrick Favors’ lackadaisical attitude. The only time he showed any emotion was when one of his four foul calls went against him. He was not assertive at all, and he seemed to slump around throughout the game.
(3) Travis Leslie brings the type of hustle that makes a difference in these close games. I’m glad he’s at Georgia and not at Tech or anywhere else.
(4) Trey Thompkins made big plays when it counted, whereas Lawal and Favors were pretty invisible. If he takes on more of that “I’m the guy” attitude at crunch time, that will be a key for the Dawgs.
(5) McPhee is the best shooter since that 66-year-old guy who sank 42 of 50 3-pointers at halftime of the Pepperdine game!
(6) If the Bulldogs can keep Thompkins, Ware and Leslie around until they’re seniors, and add some pieces around them, we could end up being pretty good.
Go Dawgs!

And don’t forget your No. 1 Dawg baseball team –the one that can’t win the SEC or get to the CWS. Oh, right that was LSU that won that national championship. Tell it like it is -
The problem at GT is not the skin color or quality of the players or the fact that the top players want to play in the NBA it is the coaching. Roy Williams has a bunch of blue chippers, loses players early to the NBA on a regular basis, coaches the players up and still wins regularly – no-one in the Triangle doubts that the loss to CoC will be more than a bump in the road.
Coach K also gets blue chippers (and if you think white players can’t play you haven’t seen Scheyer or Singler) and melds them into a Team.
Very few coaches are as good as Williams or Coach K, but for the contract Hewitt has GT should expect better than Sidney Lowe level

I do not know why but I have always loved the Jackets, I am talking from the 60’s. Paul Hewitt is not the answer. He has done all things positive he will ever do at Tech. If you know ANYTHING about basketball you can see that this team does not get the concept of playing and winning! And not just this team, but many before it!They lose to nobodys, they lose to dam near anybody they hardly ever win a close game1 And its been like this for years. If I had a kid that played in high school being recruited by this crowd, I would do everything to keep them away. The kids who leave are not much better than when they got there. And all thats sad but the really sad part is the folks paying this faker money to coach is sad.

Its was a good game. I walked away very impressed with Coach Mark Fox!!!
Im a dawgfan but i always wonder how/why CPH doesnt get more out of his team. With the talent and the basketball hotbed that is ATL you would think they could do so much better. Check his conference record in his tenure. Was it last year or the year before they only won 1 game. How many games on the road have they won? Inexcusable.
I hope this win, along with other to come get the DAWGNATION fired up about BBALL!!! GO DAWGS!!!

72-66, theres a new sheriff in town and his name is Coach Mark Fox. To win against GT that supposedly has two lottery picks, final four coach, blah, blah, blah is astounding. Georgia= Team on the Rise, GT= Team on the decline. Get used to this GT, once UGA recruits a little you will not win as long as you keep CPH.

This was and should be a big time program but it won’t ever get back to that level and certainly won’t consistently stay there with this very ordinary coach. Hewitt appears to be a pretty good guy, a good communicator, looks great, and has a strong and positive public image. He may have what it takes to be an outstanding Sports Information Director, or even Athletic Director, but he is what he always has been, an average ordinary coach more suited for small time programs like Siena, or as an assistant in a higher profile program than the head guy at Tech..
After nine full seasons at Tech Hewitt is 24 games below 500 and only has a single winning season in the ACC…………….and it’s getting worse not better. The ACC needs second and third tier teams for North Carolina, Duke and BC to beat up on and Hewitt is the perfect guy to lead Tech in that role, but if you want to win in the ACC you need much better than Hewitt.

January 5th will go down as the Night of the Great Nerd Slaughter. If Coach Fox can keep a handful of the recruits in this state we will no longer be a basketball afterthought. Excellent coach and motivator. As for football, the Trade School will be looking for a new coach after Johnson gets tired of losing his bigger out of conference games. Norm Parker is 68 years old and suffers from diabetes. As much as I would love to have him as DC he is not leaving and I don’t think we will interview him to begin with.

This says it all!!! When a JOKE of a basketball program beats what’s supposed to be a top recruiting class and loaded with talent team then who is to blame?? HEWITT!! He needs to go. When will the Athletic Director see that season ticket sales are down (you can actually get tickets to Tech games in the mighty ACC), longtime Tech fans no longer talk about Tech basketball, and great recruits don’t show much talent and the team continues to lose and show poorly against much weaker opponents. Get rid of him now before he ruins the program entirely!

You know all these Techies got excited when they beat Georgia for the first time in eight tries last year. Then we started to see the Tech hats, shirts, stickers and car tags emerge from the bowels of the ACC basement. Then came the cockiness from the North Avenue Trade School or should I say Nerdland. One Techie told me, “Oh, Paul Johnson has Georgia’s number.” Roll the clock back to Thanksgiving … Johnson forgot to use that number. So we go to the hardwood … Tech rolls into town with a No. 17 or 20 ranking, two different polls, their football team is in the Orange Bowl and all the Techies just knew they were going to salvage at least one win this year from the Dawgs… Guess what, that didn’t happen either. So now what’s the excuse… You can’t beat a struggling football team when the media is touting you and your coach as the greatest thing since sliced bread. They blow Paul Hewitt and his basketball team up with the great Derek Favors and lose to an unranked team with a new coach – Congrats Coach Fox! So what’s next? Baseball? Whatever the case may be, Mark Richt will run this state in coaching and recruiting. Mark Fox will eventually get a strong foothold in the Atlanta basketball recruiting world, and Tech will be left standing where they always are … with a T-shirt that says, “Georgia owns me.” Go Dawgs!!!!

The Georgia Tech football team has some deficiencies
The Georgia Tech basketball team has some deficiencies
But despite those deficiencies:
–The Georgia Tech football program is now better than the Georgia football program as GT won 11 games and still has a ways to go before being considered a really really good team, but they will get there.
–The Georgia Tech basketball team will always be better than the Georgia basketball team.

I’m not shocked at all. Hewitt’s teams never play smart. turnovers always outnumer assits. Plenty of missed lay-ups. The substitution pattern is crazy. How do you get a rythum when you go in for 1 minute? 3 McDonald All-Americans on the team and they play like crap. I have seen an offense from Hewitt. How can you not feed the ball to Favors? Hewitt’s gotta go….
