Bradley’s Buzz: ESPN again picks against Tech and Johnson

Not the flavor of the month per Scouts Inc. (AJC photo by Johnny Crawford)

Not the flavor of the month per Scouts Inc. (AJC photo by Johnny Crawford)

I’m not covering the Orange Bowl. I’ll be in Athens tonight watching Georgia and Georgia Tech play basketball. But I found it amusing to note that, once again, ESPN.com’s Scouts Inc. has picked against the Jackets (in football, not basketball).

A review (and all these links require registration): Scouts Inc. picked Miami over the Jackets in September and was correct; it picked Virginia Tech over GT in October and was incorrect;  it picked Clemson over the Jackets in September and also in the ACC title game and was twice wrong.  Now it likes Iowa to win 28-24 tonight. And that’s legit: This will be a difficult game for the Jackets, and a lot of people are picking against them.

What’s of greater interest is that Scouts Inc. again gives the edge in coaching to Tech’s opponent. And maybe that’s also fair: Kirk Ferentz is well regarded in the business. Scouts Inc. did the same for the Virginia Tech game — again, Frank Beamer is a proven commodity — but it also gave Clemson the nod in coaching for the ACC title game, and I can’t imagine too many folks see Dabo Swinney as more established than Paul Johnson. (Interestingly, Scouts Inc. rated Tech’s coaching as better than Clemson’s in September. Guess Dabo had a better season than Johnson.)

Maybe I’m being unfair: Scouts Inc. did pick Tech over Georgia and give Johnson the edge over Mark Richt. (Georgia won, as I recall.) But when I see a category breakdown so imbalanced — the Jackets are rated above Iowa at only three of eight positions (quarterback, running back and, interestingly enough, special teams) — you’d have to think the coach of the presumed lesser team has done something right to get his side to 11-2 and a BCS bowl.

And maybe this expression of non-love for PJ simply balances the scales: I’m aware that many among you (read: Georgia fans) believe we at the AJC have fallen all over ourselves in our admiration for the Tech coach. And I’ll concede to a bit — OK, maybe more than a bit — of gushing on my part. Still, I think the man has done a fabulous job. He’s 20-6 in two seasons and has won his conference. As I recall, we around here also sang the praises of Richt when he went 21-5 and won his league in his first two years on the job.

But enough of that. I close with two notes: Scouts Inc. isn’t to be confused with ESPN’s ACC blogger Heather Dinich, who has also picked against the Jackets a few times but likes Tech tonight. (Also by the score of 28-24.) And Mr. Always Wrong — that’d be me — likes the Jackets to win twice this evening. First at the Stegasaurus, then at Land Shark Stadium.

I happen to agree with ESPN’s take on this on. Iowa has good defense. Something that GA tach is not used to facing. Also, Tech’s defense is PATHETIC! Iowas has their starting QB back and should roll right over the jackets feeble defense.

A lot of this is the perception that Tech plays in an inferior conference. And there is a lot of truth to that. I am a Tech fan but I can understand picking against an ACC team.

I do not have a good feeling about this game. The Tech defense rules out a low scoring game with Tech as the winner.

“believe” we at the AJC have fallen all over ourselves in our admiration for the Tech coach.” Mark, believe is not the correct word here, because its not an opinion, it’s fact based on your printed words and your own admission.

ESPN is picking Iowa for all the right reasons, and its not a coaching attack on PJ. Maybe its because Tech has a pattern of choking during big games. aka Miami and UGA this year. Or maybe they looked at last years stellar performance last year in the Peach bowl against LSU. Was PJ the coach then???
This is a stage GT is not accustom to, backed up by recent AJC articles stating you have to go back to pre WWII days for an Orange Bowl appearance.

If GT wins and makes a habit of doing so, then ESPN will give the respect it deserves, until then, it’s just more whining on your part.

GT fans, please try to live in reality- congrats and good luck in your bowl game but you need to understand that these are two regional powers who have no national cache. This will be the lowest rated of all the BCS Bowl games this year- including last night’s Boise State v TCU matchup. The most interesting part of this game is how Iowa’s defense will play against GT’s gimmick offense given several weeks to prepare. If they still can’t stop GT with all that time to prepare- kudos to Paul Johnson.

Iowa has a great passing defense, but just average (30th nationally) run defense. That will pose problems for them over the length of the game. Tech will probably only throw 10 times max the whole game. Tech will generate at least 250 yards rushing. That’s enough for at least 21 points.

Assuming no major turnovers, Tech will win by 7.

Hey Dawg Days,
No way you are a dawg fan. Your blog makes some sense. I am not sure you are correct about the choking. I think there were reasons Tech lost to Mia and not all of it had to do with coaching and talent. As far as UGA, there should have been enough incentive to win that one but UGA had the better game plan and executed it perfectly. Something they had not done all year. GT will be just fine in the future. they will win ballgames and they will lose ballgames. Mark is corret, the AJC had it’s nose for far up CMR arse his frist to years that if he stopped real quick they would have broken their neck.

Nice try, dawgies. But dissing the $14,000,000-payout BCS Orange Bowl as a bad game is pretty frickin’ hysterical, coming as it does from a team that went to the Weedeater Bowl, surely the laughing stock of all bowls. You crapped all over yourselves all season, and now you’re embarrassed. That’s understandable. But obviously pretending that THE ORANGE BOWL is no big deal isn’t going to cut it with any knowledgeable fan.

Hells Bells – you are right – Tech lost to a 7-5 SEC team, as did the Dawgs badly (UT) which was whipped by VT (oops that is an ACC team). Your point is fine – the SEC is a good conference and UGA has beaten Tech repeatedly – you win. Having said that, the SEC this year was not nearly as good as in past years.

To others – ok, you cannot have it both ways – if the Big 10 is not that good, why did Penn State beat LSU? Why did OSU beat Oregon? Northwestern? hangs with Auburn. Everyone felt the PAC 10 was a very good conference this year and Oregon was hot. Iowa is a good team – if Tech beats them, it will be a quality win. If they don’t, it’s nothing to be ashamed of, unless they get thumped. The SEC has Alabama and FL this year – that’s it in terms of very good teams. The others were all fair (Auburn, Ole Miss, SC, UGA, Ark, KY, TN) to good (LSU) to bad (MSU, Vandy) teams at best.

Sounds like the whiney UGA Fans are out in force. Just be happy that at least one GA team made a BCS bowl. It does help the state in recruiting regardless of which team makes it. Enough about the “if Tech could just be a 7-5 SEC team”. Get over yourselves about that game. The same thing happened in 2008 with #11 UGA losing to an 8-3 ACC team. Next year it might be Tech beating a good UGA team or vice versa. Don’t hate on the AJC about them giving love to Coach PJ. I remember when it was all about Coach MR back in ‘02.

Does Iowa have a stable of big athletic defensive lineman? If so, they will win. End of story. Case closed. Class dismissed.

Paul Johnson cannot beat teams that are deep and talented on the defensive front. This is not opinion. It is fact. If you blow up the interior of his undersized O-line you take away the dive and render his offense predictable. If there is no serious threat up the middle, linebackers and DBs are comfortable focusing most of their efforts on the outside. At that point, its just a matter of sticking to assignments and making tackles. Its not rocket science. Any good defense can do it. Fortunately for Tech, they don’t face too many defenses like that in the ACC.

This is why Georgia Tech will never be a serious threat to do anything other than win the weak ACC occasionally and beat Georgia about once every 4 or 5 years. Of course this is a drastic improvement over Gailey, but hardly anything that we should bow down to as Tech fans would like.

AJC columnists have Tech fans gassed in to thinking that they are flirting with greatness. It makes things like 30-24 all the more enjoyable.

Thanks Mark Bradley.

Mark;

Glad to hear your honesty in falling over the performance of PJ and the jackets. It is hard not to. I would be awed to see a UGA coach raise the level of play to and beyond that of Florida of last year or Alabama of this year in 2-4 years. What PJ has done is stunning – transition to a new system of play, keep most all of the existing talent and teach them the new system, and most fun for me is the return of pure enjoyment of a run oriented offense along with the fun of clock strategic domination. Wow! As far as tonight goes – it will be the most exciting game of the week – I have a hunch Alabama Texas will be a low scoring defensive struggle, last night was ….well last night.

Tech beats Clemson twice this year. Both times by less than a touchdown. First game, Tech uses an illegal play to win among other things. ACC officials said as much after the game that the substitution play was in fact illegal. In ACC championship game (exciting game wasn’t it?)Tech clearly committed two blatent pass interference infractions…but, they were never called and were committed right in front of an official. Both plays would have resulted in a score which would have changed the outcome of the game. Now I know all you Tech fans (the emotional ones) will call me sour grapes, but a non biased review of the above will ring true. Tech has had a good season and generated a lot of excitement among Tech fans, but anyone who is a true football afficionado will agree. Tech got lucky against Clemson this year. Let the sour grapes responses begin…

Shane,

Your comment holds some merrit, but UGA does get alot of really good talent. They are expected to compete for the SEC Championship every year. Many people didn’t give PJ a shot with the offense he brought in regardless of the Conference. It is very impressive what he’s done.

dawgfan,

Does Iowa have a stable of big athletic defensive lineman? If so, they will win. End of story. Case closed. Class dismissed.

Paul Johnson cannot beat teams that are deep and talented on the defensive front. This is not opinion. It is fact. If you blow up the interior of his undersized O-line you take away the dive and render his offense predictable.

Are you serious? Clemson, UNC, VT all have really good defensive lines and GT beat all three of them and Clemson twice. Your comments don’t hold water and you know it.

Well dang, dawg days…is Iowa accustomed to this “stage” more than GT? Do they have more of a habit of winning than GT? Is the Big 10 really that much better than the ACC? And how the heck did Iowa reach the level of LSU? Were the Miami and UGA games really bigger than the ACC title game?

As a matter of fact Carlos, Iowa does have a better represenation on the big stage than Tech. You dont have to go back to WWII….They have played in the Rose Bowl 3 times since 1981, the Orange Bowl in 2002, and beat LSU in the Capital One bowl in 2004. They have been to numerous other bowls, but not the Humanitarian, Emarald, or Silicon Valley bowls.

GT was beaten by the #6 or #7 (depends on your angle) best team in the SEC. Iowa comes in as the 3rd best team in the Big 10. By my calculations, this puts Iowa easily on par with UGA. Iowa wins…

This is a mismatch IMO, and Tech should roll although MB has to be smart enough to realize that media pundits such as himself offer different views to make a more compelling bowl game. But for the whiners on here talking trash about UGA’s bowl game versus Tech’s bowl game. Do you really want to compare bowl payouts? One team has been to 3 BCS bowls this decade. I’m not really sure how much the Humanitarian Bowl pays out.

GT Offense Too Simple

January 5th, 2010
1:00 pm

Come on, GT stinks in Bowls against good defenses like LSU or Iowa. Give Iowa over a month to prepare, and all they have to do is stop 1 play, triple option, 2 direction, right or left. No NFL team runs the High School 1 trick pony offense because it’s imbalanced and too simple for defenses to figure out.

to stop triple option:
Stop dive, tackle QB, tackle pitchman.

Call me sour grapes, but……

As I recall, college football is full of lucky plays and call that should of been made. Case in point, When UGA got lucky as hell against ASU at home who isn’t very good. Real lucky against USC, AUB and ARK. how many holding penalties did they get away with in the UGA/Tech game that weren’t called? Every team gets help during the year and if they don’t, then it comes back around the following year. I remember plenty of games that UGA got lucky against Tech to win. It’s college football so quit whining.

To everyone singing the praises about how the SEC is the best conference and saying the ACC is weak please go review the Clemson-Kentucky game and the Tennesee-Virginia Tech game. I believe Clemson played like crap and still beat Kentucky (who beat Georgia)while Virginia Tech dominated Tennessee(who destroyed Georgia and almost beat Alabama while having a close game against Florida). Those were the only match ups of ACC-SEC teams in the bowls but it seems to me that the ACC was 2-0 against the SEC in bowl games this year. You can call the ACC a weak conference but based on bowl results the almighty SEC has been dominated by the ACC this bowl year.

You ought to go watch the games again, if you ever did in the first place, because Clemson got away with more holding on Morgan than I have ever seen not called. It goes both ways.

Face it, Clemson lost.

This game tonight is going to be close. I don’t think Iowa’s defense will be able to hold GT’s offense the whole game and I don’t believe GT’s defense (if you can call it that) will miraculously bring back the key injured players and play flawlessly.

After reading almost everything I could find about the Orange Bowl, I truly believe this moght actually be the best game out of all of the BCS bowls.

Gator fan here, so I have no dog in this fight, but…

For everyone on here picking Iowa on account of Tech’s suspect defense are forgetting the fact that for as bad as the Bees have been on D, the Hawkeyes have been equally bad on offense. Even when Stanzi was in the lineup, they still were not an offensive juggernaut. We all know that Tech is exceedingly proficient on offense and we also know that Iowa’s MO this year has been the steady, disciplined play of its D, therefore, we have strength versus strength. What we don’t know, however, is what will happen when Tech’s D squares off against Iowa’s offensive attack… that, friends, is the key to this matchup. That said, I’m taking Tech in a close, hard fought game with Nesbitt coming up big.

Ramblinwreck83, I was thinking more along the lines of Florida, Alabama, LSU, or even Georgia kind of defensive lines. Clemson, UNC, and VT are all cute little teams, but beating them won’t get you anything more than an occassional All Crap Conference title. You Techies have been talking a mighty big game lately about national prominence and respect. I’ve even heard some national title talk. Do you think you’ll be facing 8-4 Clemson in the BCS Title game Techie? You Tech fans simply don’t get it. You want everyone to hold you in the highest regard possible but then go comparing yourselves to UNC and Clemson. It is laughable.

2) “Shreveport = 1.4 million, Orange Bowl = 14 million.” Again, we know, because Mark Richt is probably framing pictures from our victory over Tech this year in left over $100 bills from our last Sugar Bowl.

Hey MR,
Tech lost to Mia, LSU, and UGA because those teams players jacked up and ready to play, they had better game plans, and executed. The ;last time I checked, that is related to coaching. Bradley’s column is centered in ESPN dissing PJ, which isn’t supported by those games.
And as far as what the AJC did with CMR in 2002 is irrelevant to this, CMR won the big games.
Again, dont let the facts get ya.

Shane before you start running your mouth about the great white hope (I mean the SEC) you might want to check and see the teams with the most appearances in BCS bowls and look at how many of the SEC wins were against horrible opponents such as Cincy and Hawaii who while they had great seasons can’t stack up with college football powerhouses. The SEC is a three horse race (LSU, Alabama (only since Saban arrived), and Florida). Once you get past those teams (even though I believe Kiffin will bring tennessee back) the SEC is nothing. Every conference can point to their top teams and state how good they are its the talent level throughout the conference that matters.

Good Luck against Iowa tonight in the Orange Bowl. Anyone picking Iowa has not seen them play this year. The Iowa offense is awlful and will not be able to exploit the GT weaker side of the ball. On the flip side Iowa has not seen anything like GT’s option attack and I am guessing on that. Tech should roll tonight. This blog or post has nothing to do with the SEC dominance or trash talk. However, all that being said UGA fans had to hear from MB and MS how bad the UGA team, coaches were for 3 months and how bad UGA was going to lose. The GT coach was shrined in the hall of fame and the fact is the AJC agenda had the 4th highest winning coach (CMR)in last 9 years to be an idiot. Once the game was over everyone acted like the game did not happen and did not mean as much to GT.
CMR= 8-1 against GT over 3 coaches.

How in the world can you start bashing the SEC? Is it envy? You have to be blind or stupid to think that the SEC isn’t the benchmark in college football. Tech fans aren’t dillusional about how the team is. Tech is playing great with a new offense and new staff. There is a lot of work to do, but all i keep hearing from the UGA fans is the same old stuff they were saying during the Gailey days. Why is that? We have a better record, better coach, the players are really good and we won the conference. We’re not walking around like UGA fans are and thinking that they are the greatest thing since sliced bread. Why hasn’t UGA played in a NC since MR been there. They have the talent and supposedly they have the coach and they’re in the supposed “best conference in america”, but they still come up short. Explain? I really don’t know. Sorry, Robert. If the SEC is the “benchmark” in college football, someone needs to remove those stinking splinters from the bench: Kentucky sucks, as we saw the other day. Mississippi State sucks. South Carolina blows, as we just saw verified. Vandy bites as usual. And we already know how bad the Dawgies suck. Benchmark, my ass. Or did you mean that a lot of SEC starters would be sitting on the bench in the Mountain West, whom dawgie Shane seems to think is the best conference in the land.

Mark, while it is true Tech won it conference, let’s remind ourselves that Tech plays in the “Athletically Challenged Conference”, which equates to no more than 6th place in the SEC East. It is true Tech has a soft defense. I predict the Hawkeyes win 51 to 7.

Ok then….lets work backwards….if we aren’t the best….who is? It’s funny hearing the angst in your posts. The ACC is mediocre at best and you know that order in the state has been restored.

I bet next year UGA has about the same season they did this year. Pretty much a freshman QB to run the offense. Young undisciplined players (as usual). UGA probably will lead the NCAA in penalties again and be up there in the minus turnover margin just like this year. Haha, momentary spelling lapse. “Coffers” is the word I was looking for, but anyhow–UGA brings in more revenue and profits on a yearly basis (ask Forbes) than GT or pretty much any other ACC team could ever dream of. We’ll add that $1.4 mil to our coffers in addition to the payouts from our THREE BCS bowl games this decade.

I chuckle to myself when fans of ACC teams try to insult the SEC. So Duke (no bowl), NC State (no bowl), Wake (no bowl), Boston College (lost in the bowl game to a mediocre SC team), Maryland (awful) and Virginia (yech) aren’t just as bad as an 8-win UK team, an improving Mississippi State club, and a decent USCjr team? C’mon, use some sense before you sound completely hypocritical.

Congratulations Tech fans, for having your team make it to a BCS game. Before you go bashing the bowl game that UGA was in this year, let us look back at the last 8 years, where each GT and UGA team have been in a bowl game. Looks like GT has been to far more lower tier bowls than UGA. One trip to a BCS game does not make a dynasty. Next year let us see if you are back out in Idaho, or SAn Francisco for an exciting game that is not even on the same tier as the bowl game that UGA went to this year-

Gonna have to disagree with you there. Murray might struggle some early (if he beats out Gray/Mett) but once he gets his feet under him, the kid is as talented as it gets. Ealey and King will continue to pound the ball efficiently behind a healthy O-Line, the D has playmakers in Boykin, Rambo, B. Smith, Dowtin, Justin Houston, Cornelius Washington, Abry Jones, and some new guys coming in like Ogletree and Hitman Hamilton.

With a new, solid DC hire, CMR will have the train back on the tracks.

They know their defense won’t be improved with the same personnel, QB won’t be improved, since Cox arguably had a pretty decent year, play calling and discipline won’t be improved either. Clemson had beaten sc 4-5 times in a row and 8/9. They were due for a win. Uga only won because the players finally stepped up knowing their little coach was coaching his last game AND our qb was out 1 1/2 quarters. Even with that, we still nearly won. But hey, we’re playing today. You are last week and played last week. Your team is on the decline. No one wants your dc position. Your junior defense, those that are worth anything, are leaving. And you talk trash about next year like you did this year with a high school qb who hasn’t played in 2 + years. Yep you dawg fans sure are stupid just like Zeier said. JJ,

talent doesn’t always win for you. He’ll be new to being in the game. He only played a little this year. Do you remember him in the UF game. I think his only pass was completed to Spikes who’s on UF team. It was a pick 6. I know UGA has as much talent as anyone in the nation but as this year showed, a team can have a bunch of talent but if they don’t put it together then they lose. It’s really hard to have a first year DC come in a make everything change right away. I’m sure UGA will be better next year on D, but to get back to Van Gorder days is a far cry. They probably will win around 8 games next year or 9 at best. I think that’s a pretty good record considering how things went this year. I just hope UGA fans can just stop dismissing Tech they way i’ve been hearing on this blog by other UGA fans. The last time they started to do that alot was back in 1998 and Tech won 3 in a row and bought Donnan a one-way ticket out of Athens.

Hey citizen, explain to me how Tech would finish 6th in the SEC East considering the ACC Coastal #2 SPANKED the SEC East #2??? The SEC is NOT the greatest conference in the world. It has 2 great teams & 10 Mediocre teams as has been demonstrated in the bowls. This is NOT debatable it is a fact. SC got embarrassed by a mid tier BIG EAST team in the Pizza bowl, Auburn got lucky in overtime against NW, Arkansas can thank ECU’s kicker for giving them the win in their game. Its funny to see that redneck UGA AJC blogger post that “UGA’s Win over Texas A&M shows SEC’s Dominance of the Big 12″ I could be wrong but didn’t UGA get SPANKED by OK State earlier this year?

I don’t think it’s out of disrespect for CPJ. He’s a heck of a coach and because of what he did at Navy and now at GT he’s nationally recognized. I think it’s because in the recent past the bees have been underwhelming to say the least. How else do you explain GT’s best team in years losing to a very mediocre Georgia team this year. The trouble with Tech, besides being located in a bad Atlanta neighborhood, (and also with their fans)is that they always start believing their press clippings when they do well. In 2008 Tech surprised the Dawgs because Georgia played lousy defense. And then from all the bee bravado spewed on these blog pages, you would have thought Bobby Dodd had been resurrected and a national championship was all but guaranteed. The AJC is doing again today! I like CPJ a lot from having watched his Navy teams do exceptionally well. He is a very good coach. But he don’t coach defense and that’s where Tech is weakest this year. So if they win, it will probably be in a shootout. I used to pull for Tech when they played anybody else but Georgia. But not after all the crap I’ve seen written here during the last 13 months. For one night and one night only I’m a Hawkeye and I hope it’s a beatdown!

I don’t see CPJ losing two anythings in a row. I will be very surprised if they lose tonight, but bowls may not be his thing, who knows. I hope they have sodded that mangy field in Miami, and the heat won’t be a factor this time like last. I also hope CPJ spent a little extra time on special teams, the disease that killed us against LSU last year. No matter this team is for real and the ACC should be ours again next year, so maybe CPJ just will go ahead and buy a second home down there while they are cheap.

This year’s SEC vs ACC stats. Alabama, Georgia, Florida and South Carolina beat VT, GT, FSU and Clemson. VT, GT beat Tennessee and MissST. We can go in circles about this team beat that team who beat this team….but facts are facts.

As to next year…the only thing I am worried about is the QB play. We have the athletes to accomplish all of our goals on defense, we just need someone to make us play disciplined, aggressive and fundamental football. I have faith that CMR will get the right man for the job. I think it’s funny that our “bad” season was 8-5. That’s a really good year on the Flats…right my Tech friends?

And to the person that said that garbage about this isn’t important…I think we can all agree that sports are the best stress relief for us. Regardless of what school we root for….college football is the greatest sport in the land.

I don’t start back to work for a couple days….(school isn’t in session) so I guess I can spend my time how I want to….right?

Really, Hell’s Bells? ACC can’t beat 7-5 SEC team? I know this year you guys (SEC) beat both ACC champs the same weekend. But last year, did not the ACC have a winning record over the SEC (and no, they were not all Vandy)? And did not VT just throttle TN last weekend? And is not the SEC currently 5-4 in bowl games? How did 4 SEC teams get beaten, and another (Auburn) have the game given to them by the opponents field goal kicker choking by a team who has not won a bowl game since 1939??? I’m not sitting here saying that the ACC or Big 10 are better than the SEC, but the kind of crap you are spouting here JUST doesn’t pass the BS test. The top of the SEC this year (FL and AL) were obviously the cream of the crop. However, several programs (GA, TN, Auburn) who typically have had elite programs were anything but elite. So overall, the SEC was NOT as good this year as they have been in the past…and seems to be validated by less than dominant bowl performances (Florida excluded).

I see no reason that you have to try to belittle the accomplishments because they lost to LSU (by the way, said loss to them was in LARGE part to special teams). You are NOT an LSU fan…so don’t sit there like other loser Dog fans did last year when Tech beat you and then try to rest on the laurels of another team in your conference. Their team was down this year, and if they could not talk about beating a SUPERIOR Tech team, they would have nothing left to say except “wait till next year”.

The only thing about next year though is, they saw their future in the dome a few weeks ago, another beat down in the Sec, except it will be Alabama rolling over them instead of Florida.

As they climbed higher, they argued as to which one of them was the most loyal of all. They argued all the way up the mountain, and when they reached the top, the Notre Dame grad hurled himself off the mountain, shouting “This is for the Fighting Irish!” as he fell to his doom.

Not wanting to be out done, the Florida grad threw himself off the mountain proclaiming, “This is for the Gators!”

It’s HILARIOUS that you are talking about a “signature win”. Yes, it was a down year and yes, it was our best win of the season; however, UGA, unlike Tech, does not base their season on the Tech game. The vast majority of the time it’s just another nice win on the way to another solid season. Must I remind you, AGAIN, that it was YOUR TECH TEAM that put the Georgia score on their rings last year!

The University of Georgia defines Georgia Tech. It always has and it always will. You are the Michigan State to our Michigan and the Texas A&M to our Texas. Big brothers ALWAYS define their little brothers, for good or ill.

Well, well, well!!! Why is it that this post went from being a prediction of who’s going to win the orange bowl to being another rendition of GT vs UGA? Although we know that GT’s a lot better than UGAy.

Anyway, I feel as though GT can pull the game out tonight because of the defense, led by Derrick Morgan, and our #2 rushing attack. ESPN can kiss my STINGER. Just like AJC, ESPN is anti-tech and pro-UGA, and look what happened. UGA ended up with a sucking 8-5 record, while GT ends up with an 11-2 record after tonight. Just watch the game, and all the haters will be back on GT’s band wagon.

Prediction: Tech wins both football and basketball tonight.

One day in an elementary school in Athens, GA, a teacher asks her class if the Georgia Bulldogs are their favorite football team. The whole class says yes, except for Little Jimmy.

The teacher asks, “What’s your favorite football team Jimmy?”

Little Jimmy says, “The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets ”

The teacher asks, “Well, why is that?”

Little Jimmy says, “Well, my dad is a Yellow Jacket fan, my mom is a Yellow Jacket fan, I guess that makes me a Yellow Jacket fan.”

The teacher angered by his reply says, “If your dad was a moron and your mom was an idiot what would that make you?”

Little Jimmy says, “Well, I guess that would make me a Georgia fan.”

CFN picked the Hawkeyes as well. I don’t know who’s gonna win this game, but I think it’ll be the best of the BCS games so far. Iowa has tremendous LBs which will may limit the long toss-to-the-A-back plays, but I think the Iowa D front will pushed around just enough for Dwyer to get some important hard-fought yards in between the tackles. CPJ will probably work in just enough wrinkles to make a few good Nesbitt-Thomas hookups down field.

But I’m worried that the Hawkeye’s O-line will be able to push around the Tech D-line and get hard-fought rushing yards. And if that happens too often, it might be a replay of the UGA game, where Tech just won’t have enough time with the ball to get the W. I think it will come down to QB play for both teams.

(UGA) Folks seem to want to say how bad GT would have done with UGA schedule.

I’d like to invite them to wonder what UGA would have done with the GT schedule.

Probably lose to Clemson twice
Lose to Miami
Lose to Virginia Tech
Probably lose to North Carolina

There are a couple teams on Tech’s schedule that are fairly similar to Kentucky (who UGA lost to) like FSU & Wake that the Dogs could have lost to as well, but I won’t go down that road.

So looks like UGA would have had about the same record (7-5) against Tech’s schedule as they played themselves.

And why are you (UGA) pointing to your “tough” schedule anyway? Outside of the Tech game, you only played 3 ranked opponents (AND LOST THEM ALL) while Tech played against 3 ranked opponents and went 2-1.

Now then, go unpack your bags after your 3 day stay in beautiful Shreveport, LA and and relax and wait for the game tonight so you can root against Tech – which, for some reason, so many UGA fans seem to want to do (as opposed to most Tech fans, who could care less about UGA games as we have better things to spend our time on).

As for Tech, nice season and coach, and plenty to build from and look ahead to in 2010…but you need to win tonight against a slightly above average Big Ten team to be relevant/bragging yourselves.

Going for that NC by loading up the schedule with AA teams. NC in 2010 what a laugh. They will lose to VT, Florida St. UGA and probably Miami next year. They won’t even win their division in the A-She-She.

Tech has a swiss cheese defense and if they were to lose Nesbitt they probably won’t score a point after he leaves the game. After tonight’s beatdown by Iowa they won’t even finish in the top 15.

Thanks to all those UGA fans with class that wish Tech well tonight. Even the detractors have some good points. Tech will not be a great team until 1) they recruit and play consistently good defense. Doesn’t have to be perfect…if we could stop the other team 50% of the time most of our games would be blowouts; 2) Our OL needs depth and overall increase in talent level.

On both of these points, I think we are getting there with our current recruiting class. Still, tonight’s game will be interesting.

To those stupid as* dawg fans that think the SEC is superior to everyone else, here is this years breakdown of the bowl games;

SEC – 5-4
ACC – 3-3

The killer is, you are 0-2 versus ACC teams this bowl season(Tennessee lost to VT, and Kentucky lost to Clemson, both teams that Tech beat). And to make matters worse, you even lost to a Conference USA team (South Carolina lost to UConn).

If it wasn’t for Northwestern and East Carolina missing chip shot field goals, you would be looking at a pathetic bowl season.

Like I said at the beginning of the season, the SEC has 2 teams (Florida and Alabama) that are real good, everybody else is average, just like every other conference. Until UGA can at least keep it close with Florida and Alabama, you are nothing.

I cannot believe that you have actually admitted your bias toward Tech. Tell us something we don’t know like how to milk a duck. Come on Mark! To compare winning an ACC championship with winning an SEC championship is ludicrous beyond belief. And Richt has won 2 SEC chanpionships, thank you!

Hey SEC, let’s trade some teams: Give us SC and we’ll give you FSU. Want to?

Hey SEC, give us UGa and we’ll give you FlaSt. or Miami.

Hey Mr. Notre Dame guy, I’m going to go out on little bit of a limb here and say that 30-24 means UGA beat Tech 30 points to 24 points. Follow the bouncing ball here nimrod. How it works is the team with the most points at the end of the game wins. So, when Georgia fans post 30-24 we’re saying we beat Tech’s overrated arses. And what better place to do it than right here on a Bradley blog hyping up this flash in the pan creampuff?

Oh, and Notre Dame freaking sucks. Thanks.

Wow Mark, how could those ESPN guys have possibly picked Iowa in this game? Maybe they knew something…. Maybe all of the slobbering over Paul Johnson and GT this year was a bit premature and overdone?! The ACC is a weak football conference, wake up.

Bradley (all other Tech fans): ESPN picked Iowa because they aren’t as biased as you are. Winning the ACC doesn’t make Tech a “great” team. The ACC is not a great conference and any SEC team would probably contend for the conference championship if they were in the ACC.

PJ is hailed as a GOD by you and the Tech fans because they have had 2 decent seasons in the ACC. That will still get you blown out against any other average or above SEC school and won’t guarantee a bowl victory. You’ll get the love & respect from ESPN and others AFTER you have 5 or 6 successful seasons. When you have to give your team a ring for beating UGA once every 8 or 9 years you aren’t there!

PAUL JOHNSON CALLED A HORRIBLE GAME LAST NIGHT. HE IS GOING TO HAVE TO MOVE AWAY FROM THIS ALL OUT RUN OFFENSE. I REALLY EXPECTED TO SEE HIM CHANGE THINGS UP MORE THAN HE DID LAST NIGHT. A LITTLE MORE PASSING EARLY ON AND 4TH AND SHORT WAS AUTOMATIC ALL YEAR LONG UNTIL LAST NIGHT, HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN GOING FOR THE FIRST DOWN EARLY IN THE GAME AND CONTINUED TO PLAY THE WAY THEY DID ALL SEASON LONG, ALL OR NOTHING. ANYWAY YEAH THEY LOST AND HE SUCKED LAST NIGHT, THIS LOSS IS ON HIM AND NO ONE ELSE. HE CALLED THE PLAYS AND DID A TERRIBLE JOB AT IT, WHILE KNOWING HE WAS GONNA BE FACING A TOUGH DEFENSE AND A DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR THAT SHUT HIM DOWN WHEN HE WAS COACHING AT NAVY. BUT WHATEVER, MEDIOCRITY RULES ATLANTA SPORTS, I HAVE LEARNED TO LIVE WITH IT.

COACH JOHNSON–YOU’RE GONNA HAVE TO CHANGE SOMETHING UP FOR NEXT YEAR, AND I HOPE IT INVOLVES A QB WHO CAN PASS THE BALL AND AT LEAST A GAMEPLAN THAT PASSES 20% OF THE TIME INSTEAD OF 2%. SOME GOOD DEFENSIVE RECRUITING WOULDN’T HURT EITHER…..

GaBuckeyefan your an idiot UCONN is in the big east. For your other games, Tennessee is 4th in the sec VT has the same record as Clemson (and clemson played for the acc title)they were stuck behind Tech is the other division. So givin that Clemson beating Kentucky is like bragging you beat up the neighborhood retard granted UGA could not do it I would not go around bragging if we had won so the only dud would be that horrible SC team. So shut up and look at the facts before you bragging about the number 2 and 3 teams in the ACC beating some of the middle of the pack SEC teams.
