Bradley’s year in picks: Good on Tech, bad on the Vols

Who saw this coming? Why, yours truly. (AJC photo by Johnny Crawford)

Not to say I told you so ... (AJC photo by Johnny Crawford)

It was the best of years, it was the …

OK, that’s a a lie. It wasn’t the best of years, prediction-wise. It was only OK. I’ve had better. I’ve also had worse. (Lots worse, as you know.) And our annual Accountability Scoreboard begins with the obvious high point:

I picked Georgia Tech to go 10-2 and win the ACC title. It went 10-2 and won the ACC title. I was wrong about the the games Tech lost — I had the Jackets succumbing to Florida State and, for reasons I’ll never understand, Vanderbilt — but I was, big-picture-wise, dead on.

Regarding Georgia, I wasn’t dead on. But I was pretty darn close. I had the Bulldogs going 8-4, which many among you insisted was way too low. They went 7-5. Until the season’s 11th game, I had picked every game save one (Tennessee) correctly. Then things went ka-blooey. Georgia lost to Kentucky, which I didn’t think could happen, and then it beat Tech, which I insisted would never happen.

I was half-right about the participants in the SEC title game. (Right on Florida, wrong on LSU.) I was half-right about the participants in the ACC title game. (Right on Tech, wrong on FSU.) I’m half-right about the participants in the BCS title game. (Right on Texas, wrong on Alabama.) I was wrong about Colt McCoy winning the Heisman, more wrong about Tech’s Jonathan Dwyer finishing fifth.

This year I endeavored to pick every SEC game, and I did OK, if I do say so myself. I picked Florida to go 13-0 and win the conference title; it went 12-1 and lost to Alabama. I picked South Carolina to go 7-5; it went 7-5. (I also maintained Steve Spurrier would resign, which hasn’t happened.) I picked Kentucky go 7-5; it went 7-5. I picked Vandy to go 5-7; it went 2-10.

I picked LSU to go 11-1 and win the West; it went 9-3 and finished second. I picked Alabama to go 11-1; it went 12-0 (now 13-0). I picked Ole Miss to go 8-4; it went 8-4. I picked Arkansas to go 8-4; it went 7-5. I picked Auburn to go 6-6; it went 7-5. I picked Mississippi State to go 4-8; it went 5-7.

Where I really messed up (other than Vandy) was on Tennessee: I thought the Vols would stink. They didn’t. I picked them to go 4-8, losing to Georgia and Vanderbilt and Kentucky. They went 7-5 and beat all three. (I was also wrong about Florida scoring 63 points on Tennessee; the correct total was 23. But what’s 40 points among friends?)

I also sought to predict the postseason destination of every SEC bowl-eligible team, and I got exactly one (of nine) correct — Ole Miss to the Cotton. But I did have Virginia Tech opposing an SEC opponent in the Chick-fil-A. Half-credit, right?

Turning to professional doings: The Falcons will not go 10-6 and win the NFC South. Good news: Through 14 games, my preseason breakdown has been right 11 times. (I had them losing to Carolina here and winning there, and it was the other way around. And I had them beating the Saints here.) Bad news: I didn’t see anyone in this division flying past them, which New Orleans rather obviously did.

The Braves did not win the wild card. (Though they had a chance with six games to play, whereupon they neglected to win again.) I had them winning 89 games and finishing second to the Mets. They won 86 and finished third behind Philadelphia and Florida. Brian McCann didn’t win MVP, as I maintained he would. Jeff Francoeur did not hit .285, as projected in this space, nor did Kenshin Kawakami win 12 games.

The Hawks did, however, beat the Heat in Round 1 of the NBA playoffs. I had them prevailing in six games. They needed seven. Details.

I picked three of the correct Final Four — Villanova, North Carolina and UConn — in the annual Fiasco, an achievement for which I’d ordinarily award myself a passing grade. Alas, the one I missed — Louisville — was my national champ. More details.

I’m sure there were one or two predictions I’ve forgotten — write 520 posts in a year and you try keeping track — and if you find one feel free to bring it to my attention. And, as has become Accountability Scoreboard tradition, I leave you with one forecast for the new year. The last time it didn’t pan out: I picked the Falcons over the Giants in the NFC title game. I’m thinking this one just might.

Nov. 20, 2010; Tuscaloosa, Ala.: The Georgia State Panthers cap their inaugural football season by shocking the world. They score against Alabama! Three whole points!

Mark, great work this year. It is a tough time for newspapers, and I appreciate you making an effort to reach readers. I re-upped my AJC subscription, largely for this reason. I wish the blogs would stay focused on the issue, but too many people want to rant at each other over nothing. Please keep up the good work. Merry Christmas, Happy New Year!

Hey Snapshot,

The Dawgs beat Tech by running it down your pathetic defense’s throat. If you mean “beat themselves” because of poor tackling, getting beat on the lines of scrimmage, and getting hit in the mouth, then I’d say you are correct.

And for all you Tech fans: 30-24, 339 and WE run this state! The ACC may be the 7th best conference in the nation so we still don’t know if Johnson’s offense works in big time college football.

Chris, what can I say? I started to come around on Les Miles — I kind of agreed with your take — and then he botches the Ole Miss game.

And I didn’t expect Alabama to be quite this good. I picked the Tide 11-1, which meant I figured it would be strong, but I didn’t see Bama going undefeated for the second consecutive regular season.

Hey Mark, 2010 predictions?

December 26th, 2009
10:28 am

How about some WAY too early predictions for next season? Here’s mine…

UGA will go 10-2 and play Alabama in the SECCG, not sure of the outcome of that yet. They will, of course, beat Tech and will also beat UF which will finish 7-5 and Meyer will wish he had taken the Notre Dame job.

It all falls apart for Tech in year 3 of the PJ experiment. Dwyer, Morgan and Burnett are all turning pro, so they end up 6-6 after a loss in the “Somewhere-out-west Bowl”. Clem’s sons will win the weak ACC but their record will still only be 8-4 which will have the BCS commissioners voting on whether the MAC or WAC needs to replace the ACC in the automatic BCS bid.

TCU will win the NC.
Pete Carroll will take another NFL job after USC goes 7-5.
Notre Dame will go to a BCS bowl and Brian Kelly will be proclaimed the Messiah.
Keenum from Houston wins the Heisman after throwing for about 6000 yards.
A.J. Green finishes 3rd in the balloting.
Nesbitt finishes 26th.

TampaGator

December 26th, 2009

Mark, congrats on your predictions. Not bad. But the Gators, even with some jrs. leaving, will still be the team to beat in the SEC East. They are still loading, and Meyer is bringing in perhaps the best recruiting class in the nation…and Dubose and Moore will be back at WR to go with Brantley (who will light up the passing lanes in the SEC next year). The Dawgs will be better (how could they be worse) next year, but still several big steps behind the Gators. oh….Dunlap’s parents want Carlos to come back next year and say it is 50/50 he will. For those who ripped (and will rip) this kid, Dunlap has never been in trouble before and comes from a great home and background. He is a super kid who made a real stupid mistake. I think he wants to come back and earn his rep back. The rest of the SEC better hope he doesn’t.

Mark Bradley

December 26th, 2009

TCU will win the national championship? That’s a bold pick. I’ll file that one. (And maybe steal it later.)

I would be higher on Georgia if we knew the identity of the new defensive coordinator. And also if we’d ever seen Aaron Murray in a real game. But I do think the Bulldogs will be better than 7-5.

TampaGator

Mark Bradley

I’d be surprised if Dunlap returns, TampaGator. He’s going to go so high in the draft that returning would be a huge risk.

by the way, no comments on here about the great possibility that Willie Martinez will become the LB or DB coach at Florida after the bowl game. Say what you want, Willie is a great position coach and a great recruiter, especially in Florida. This will be a great add to the Florida coaching staff for next year. Chuch Heater, it looks like, is going to step up and become the DC at Florida (and therefore the Martinez hire). Getting Martinez to recruit south Florida will be huge for the Gators and, as I said, he is a really good position coach (although not a great DC).

Mark….Dunlap’s parents stated that his draft status has been hurt by the incident, and it might be more about pride than money for them and Carlos. But, if he has a great Sugar Bowl, which I think he will, his draft position will go back to where it was….and he will be gone, as you believe. Also, I think you might be dead on with the 10-2 (I think 11-1) Gator prediction…but one of the loses will not be to Georgia.

Mark… you did it again! You had another fine year of prognostications. I, for one, did not approve of your UGA football estimation this season, but it was actually better than the result. I respect anyone who owns up to his predictions/comments, and you already know what I think of you as a sport writer (one of the best in the business). I’m in a Bowl Pick Pool where I am 2-4 so far, and not alone, as many pro pickers are in the same boat, many at 1-5 (I did have SMU winning). Picking winners is a very inexact science, and few do it better than you. I will say I like Jeff Schultz’s picks (against the line) too, for the most part. But, it’s his levity that makes his picks fun to read about.

Here’s hoping you enjoy the rest of the holiday, and the bowls, and we all enjoy another exciting new year in sports – preferably with integrity and soon a college football playoff (without Congressional intervention). Go Dawgs, Falcons (get us that consecutive winning season), Hawks, Braves, and yuch, yes, Tech in the Orange! Happy New Year one and all!

And, not that you asked, here’s the Bradley Rule on bowl predicting: Don’t. Because bowl results — except for the BCS title — are pretty much functions of motivation, and it’s hard to know which team will want to play and which won’t. I mean, would anyone have picked Tech to lose by 35 points to LSU in Atlanta last New Year’s Eve? But LSU was 7-5 and was mad about being 7-5, and the Jackets had had a month to hear how wonderful they were after winning in Athens.

I agree with your “functions of motivation” theory… look at SMU. They wanted that game for June and his return to Hawaii… more than a Nevada team without it’s star RBs and, just learned, it’s LB who was arrested for shoplifting. Look out for them in the bowls to come – the run and shoot is awesome to watch when done well. And how about the BYU game? They were playing in their 5th consecutive Las Vegas game, but clearly wanted to show their talent over a less-enthused Beaver team, down about missing the Rose. Both of those games lead me to believe BC has a chance against S. Cal… should be fun to see. Have a great weekend… and come-on, man-up Falcons… we need this win Sunday!!

Mark,
Thanks for a great year of posting and picking.
I was thinking about this the other day–and you reminded me when you mentioned you never would have guessed UGA would lose to KY and then beat GT…
Do you think UGA spent a good portion of their prep time against KY focusing on Tech? Maybe Martinez, trying to save his job, or Richt realizing that losing rivalry games in already disappointing years got his predecessor fired?
Either way, we got our butts kicked fair and square.

Also, Clemson and Miami both admitted at the beginning of the season that they spent much more time preparing for the triple option than for the offenses of their other early opponents. Do you think more teams will start to do that, perhaps risking a lack of preparation for other opponents just to avoid guaranteeing a loss to GT because their defense doesn’t ‘get’ how to defend the TO?

TampaGator

Cody…he interviewed with Meyer this week and, according to some sources, talked to Meyer about either with DB or LB position coaching position, If Chuck Heater is named the DC afte the bowl game, which many sports writers in Florida think he will, I would think Willie will become a Gator position coach. Whoever gets Willie will be getting a very good postion coach and a great recruiter. His leaving Georgia will hurt their recruiting efforts in Florida, I believe.

Predictions for 2010,

1. Georgia will go 8-4 and claim another National Championship, even though their record is not quite as good as a 13-0 Alabama.

2. Georgia Tech will go 9-3, and lose in the ACC championship game.

3. UGA fans will continue to leave trash out of the trash cans at Sanford

4. 100 more robberies will take place at GT before football season starts

5. Braves will fire Frank Wren after he decides to trade Tommy Hanson and Jair Jurjens for Jarrod Saltalamachia

YOU PREDICTED:

1. The CHOKE is the best rookie qb EVER

- Still has not made the pro bowl

- Still has no playoff wins (Flacco has 2 & counting)

- Still has no back-to-back playoff appearance (Flacco in his 2nd)

- Statistics have regressed (All Flacco’s have improved)

1. YOU PREDICTED SMITH/DIMITROFF better than MORA/MCKAY ERA:

- No playoff win (Mora had 1 in 1st season)

- No division titles (Mora won 1 in 1st season)

- No championship game appearances (Mora made it in 1st season)

3. YOU PREDICTED FALCONS:

- Would win division (Not even close)

- You predicted they would finish 10-6 (I think you meant Ravens)

No way I had them finishing 2nd in the SEC East though. Next year will be tougher on Kiffin than this one. Their 2010 schedule won’t permit much better if not a bit worse. Oregon, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, LSU just to name a few coupled with the QB/OL issues that’s coming…First things first. Beat VT and GBO…

Clusters had a good Christmas and we hope you did, too. We was very quiet Christmas Eve listening for anything downstairs and we didn’t hear any noise. Next morning, we was up early and went downstairs and found some unexpected gifts. We got a Mr Met action figure and a Mets jersey with Jeff’s number on it. Well, we’ve had Jeff’s number for some time now and we’ll probably use that Mets jersey just for yard work. When we was playing ball together we was pretty close but not getting to go on that golf trip has caused some hard feelings for this Clusters. Cheering for the Mets don’t seem right anyway. We still are a Braves fan and will be forever even when they won’t play small ball with a small ball lineup. Mark’s predictions was pretty spot on and we recall when we was asked to make predictions for the school paper and we was always picking teams that had orange for a school color. That’s probably what we’ll do again and we was noticing Tech will be in an Orange Bowl and that should be worth picking Tech. We was never sure what color the Advocar Bowl will be but we was betting it won’t be anything to do with orange. Still, we wish Tech and Georgia both a very successful trip to Miami and to Shreveport.

Mark….switching gears here….wanted to give you a thought for an upcoming column. Could you put together the seating capacity at all of the bowl games and then compare with the number of tickets sold? I realize you can’t do this before the games are played, but it would be nice. The reason I am curious is what looked like the very low number of fans who attended the Hawaii Bowl. It looked like that UGA would have more fans watching their spring game than the number present in Hawaii. I just wondered how all of the bowls will make out financially and which ones are dragging the bottom of the barrel.

That’s a good idea, Lilburn Dawg, but I can tell you already that all bowls — save the Rose and the BCS title game — figure to be hurting. People aren’t traveling the way they did five years ago, and the BCS has had the effect of marginalizing every bowl except the title tilt.

And think about this: Georgia Tech and Iowa are playing on Jan. 5. That’s a Tuesday night after most people have gone back to work/school. People who might be happy to travel over New Year’s will thinking twice about doing it so long after the holidays.

“It all falls apart for Tech in year 3 of the PJ experiment. Dwyer, Morgan and Burnett are all turning pro, so they end up 6-6 after a loss in the “Somewhere-out-west Bowl”. Clem’s sons will win the weak ACC but their record…”

Comments like these are what’s so funny about delusional dog fans. Gee, in PJ’s 13 years as a HC or the previous 13 as OC (Navy, Hawaii, Ga Southern) not a single team has “fallen apart” once PJ arrives on the scene. But, this DDF (delusional dog fan) thinks it will suddenly happen at GT. Sorry my friend, I know it’s probably the one thing you want most to happen next season, but it ain’t gonna happen. Mark B …. I totally disagree with you saying Nesbitt is irreplacable. The 2 redshirts (Luallen & Sims) are atheletically gifted recruits more suited to run this offense at their current level than Nesbitt was coming out of high school. It might be one of those two or he might be just a sophomore in high school right now, but PJ will get a QB that reminds football fans of the Jamel Hollloway, Tommy Frazier, Tracy Hamm QBs that have shined in this type of offense in the past. That is something all GT fans can look forward too, and their opponents can fear – it’s going to happen, sooner or later.

On the Orange Bowl & Jan 5th ….. that’s exactly why I can’t attend. It’s a Tuesday night AFTER the (company) Holidays, and my COMPANY isn’t emotionally invested to the Jackets, so it’s work, work, work for me. Yeah, I’d say the BCS (bunch of dam# crooks) is doing GREAT things for the bowl system!

I totally disagree with your comment about Nesbitt being irreplacable. Luallen or Sims, both gifted atheletes, are way more suited to run this offense coming out of high school that was Nesbitt. It might be one of these 2 or he might be a freshman in high school right now, but guaranteed is this….PJ will have a QB at GT that reminds everyone of the Jamel Holloway, Tommy Frazier, Tracy Hamm, Raymon Gross type QBs who have previously shined in this type system.

On the Orange Bowl & Jan 5th … that’s exactly why I can’t be there – it’s AFTER the (company) holiday season, and since my company is emotionally invested to the Jackets like I am, it’s work, work, work in this crappy econmoic environment we’re in right now. This is clearly an attempt by you to try to show a weak GT following to the Orange Bowl. Fair enough. But, I defer to:
“Georgia has sold about 6,000 tickets — half of its allotment –- to the Dec. 28 Independence Bowl against Texas A&M, associate athletics director Alan Thomas said.”
ttp://www.ajc.com/sports/uga/georgia-candidate-ko enning-hired-246396.html

Georgia’s ticklefest is in the middle of the holidays, not on a Tuesday night after the holidays are over. UGA’s fanbase is 3 times as large as the GT fanbase in metro Atlanta (150,000 to 50,000 living alumni in Atlanta), yet UGA has sold 6,000 tickets. Impressive.

Indicted, you are a great assumption artist. TCU would kill GT b/c why – b/c they have lost 2 less games than GT? Their D stats are ranked so high? B/c you believe everything you read? Are you also ASSuming that Ok St, UK, UT, or LSU would beat GA if they played again? Things that actually happened ON THE FIELD, and I’ll guarantee you’d say GA would beat them all if they played again. TCU & GT have a common opponent this season – Clemson. TCU won 14-10, GT won 30-27 & 39-34, and you have somehow surmised that TCU would “beat the mortal hell” out the Jackets.
Yeah, good one – the ACC “lobbied” to not have TCU in the game. If you haven’t noticed it yet DA, the BCS is crooked & flawed. It’s not about who the fans & schools want in these games, it’s about who the BCS wants in them.

He’s right GT Fan. The ACC lobbied to keep TCU out of the Orange. Of all the teams GT could have faced, TCU woud have been a nightmare matchup for Tech on both sides of the ball. The ACC is becoming panicky over their pitiful image and are praying for something other than their annual bowl humiliation. The ACC couldn’t afford to have TCU beating their champion.

WonderDawg says “UF “morphed” into a pretty sorry team two years ago (even with Teabow!!!!!). After we kicked your sorry butts, lowly Michigan did the same…”
UGA did not lose to UF in 2005 nor UF to UGA in 2007 due to Shockley’s or Tebow’s injuries. They both loss because the winning team had a superior experienced defense. After the 2006 BCS Championship UF loss 9 out of 11 starters on defense and played close to half true freshman due basically to Urban’s poor first recruiting class that he had less than 1 month to work (only 4 players out of that class ended up starting any significant games).
UF will have a falloff in 2010 but not as much as in 2007 due to good recruiting classes since 2006. How much falloff will depend on how many Gator juniors make the jump to the NFL, for the big bucks, before any new salary cap. If the majority of the juniors jump, I predict the Gators will win 9 games next year losing to atleast 2 SEC West teams.

Additionally…for you Dawg fans “dreaming” of a big Gator downfall next year…better first take a look at the talent coming back next year on their roster (even with some of the Jrs. leaving) and I think you will wake up from dreamland. The depth of young talent on the Gator roster is truely amazing…and they will most likely have the number one recruiting class this year to add to it. And, again, Brantley is the real deal. Dream all you want. The Gators will win the SEC East next year…again…and play Bama (or possibly LSU) for the SEC title. This time, the motivation will be on the Gator side of the ball. Trouble is, none of those teams will be #1 or #2 going into the game next year because of the schedule both teams play…and they also play one another in the regular season. Georgia is at least another year away from competing with the Gators in the East…and by then it will probably be the Gators and the Vols…as much as I hate Kiffin’s coaching style and all that.

I’m not 100% positive about this, but I’m pretty sure the Orange Bowl got first pick of the at-large teams. They chose Iowa because Iowa has proven in the past it’s fan base travels well. It’s pretty much that simple ($$ ticket sales). I think that might quell the conspiracy theorists.

What’s Next For Georgia Tech

1) TCU —The Horned Frogs ought to lobby hard for an Orange Bowl berth but the ACC fought just as hard to keep them out. The Orange Bowl would make sense, so would the Fiesta Bowl for TCU.

Statistically speaking, this would probably be the least-appealing opponent for Georgia Tech. Gary Patterson’s crew are a wicked second in the nation defensive, third against the run and third against the pass. Additionally, TCU’s got the kind of strong, physical defensive line that can wreck Tech’s offense in a bad way.

The ACC wanted Iowa and in the end got them. On paper, this is probably the most appealing match-up for Georgia Tech, but Ferentz is not a coach to be trifled with, and Iowa has had a lot of luck run its way this season.

Read it and weep The Dude (Andrew Sherwin). The ACC wanted no part of TCU.

GT’s official colors are White and Old Gold … not Yellow and Black (those are Iowa’s colors). Yeah call me picky … now bring on some asinine comments …

Didn’t know about GT lobbying against playing TCU in the Orange Bowl …. Mr. Bradley can you confirm??

Admittedly, and I repeat Admittedly, GT and the ACC in general have not performed well in bowls during the current BCS era (GT has lost its past 4 bowls and has a 23-15 bowl record overall). But if you look at conference performances overall, the PAC 10, SEC and ACC are the 3 conferences with the highest bowl game winning percentages. Not trying to incite any crazed arguments here … just pointing out a fact to keep in mind. Now bring on more asinine comments …

Obviously, GT needs to “right the ship” immediately regarding its recent history in bowl games. There would be no better way to do so than make a big statement in the Orange Bowl against Iowa. Current “experts” have GT +4 pts in the spread, and I tend to agree … the game is gonna be close.

You nats have anointed Paul Johnson as the second coming yet his record against SEC teams not named MSU or Vandy is 1-2. He is 0-1 in bowl games, and got humiliated in that one…possibly 0-2 or at best 1-1 after this Orange Bowl. He won the ACC beating a Clemson team that had lost 4 games in a horribly down year for the ACC. Got drilled by Miami. Has done what he’s done with Chan Gailey’s top 10 recruiting class. What happens to fat Paul when Gailey’s players bail, he has to play a resurgent Miami and VT every year in his division. Paul hit the wall against UGA this year and at the end didn’t have a clue how to deal with it. Let’s see how good he is without Chan’s players. How often he wins even his division with his less than stellar recruiting classes. Let’s see if he can beat UGA more than once a decade. And until he actually does that you nats are really just mouthing off with nothing to back it up. You nats are doing what you are world class at. Setting yourselves up for failure and being the most angry, bitter, fans in all of college football. Chances are very good that PJ or no PJ, GT will slip back behind Miami and VT, and fighting hard to keep UNC from overtaking you in your division with Chan’s boys gone. In the end you “fans” will turn on PJ like a pack of rapid dogs due to your overinflated estimate of his ability to take second rate recruits and produce the results you expect. I bet at the end of next season that http://www.firepauljohnson.com will be up and buzzing.

At their current pace, the Hawks are going to win anywhere from 57 to 59 games, although they might well tail off, so maybe they will end up with the 54 you predicted.

A Decade of the BCS: College Football’s Winners and Losers of the BCS Era

Winners:

The SEC

This latest decade has been a breakout period for probably the most deep conference in college football.

The SEC holds the previous three national championships and has the highest winning percentage of any major conference in BCS games.

Alabama is the only SEC team that has played in a BCS game yet to win one, including a stunning loss to Utah in the 2009 Sugar Bowl.

With two of the big bowl games in SEC territory (the Sugar Bowl and Orange Bowl), the southern teams enjoy a more convenient travel and a better homefield advantage. Still, no one can argue how talented these teams have been.

Their dominance is very likely to continue on into this BCS season.

Losers:

The ACC

In all the years of the BCS, the ACC has been unable to send two squads and has only two wins to show for it, the most recent in the 2009 Orange Bowl by Virginia Tech.

Florida State’s championship in 2000 would be one of only two times an ACC squad played for the championship (not including Miami who played in the Big East at the time).

Despite absorbing Miami and Virginia Tech, the ACC never quite became the superconference many expected it would be.

It may still be one day, but for now, the ACC has struggled to win big games.

So headed into the year 2010, it is safe to conclude that:

1) Georgia Tech is relevant to UGA’s football team (as evidenced by Richt posting posters of 45-42, rugs with BEAT TECH, and a GT game countdown clock in the locker room)
2) Georgia Tech is relevant to UGA’s fan base (as evidenced by the last year, and especially by the last 4 weeks).
3) UGA’s fans enjoy pointing out that GT fans are horrible and don’t travel with their team, but their own more conveniently scheduled bowl game couldn’t even sell half of its allotment. And those tickets probably are not $125/ticket. After all, a true fan travels with the team regardless of the name of the bowl, right?
4) And most obvious of all, UGA has provided the nation with the blueprint that no other school could come up with in 13 years to stop Paul Johnson’s option.

Happy New Year. To Hell with Georgia. Go Jackets.

Bowl Record II….Martinez will not have to work any “magic” at Florida as a DB or LB coach. It is called having lots of very talented players to coach. Coach Heater, who will likely be promoted to the DC postion, will probably remain as the DBs coach. Martinez will probably end up coaching the LBs at Florida, replacing Strong in that area. Sandmand1…Strong also coached the LBs at Florida. I know DCs also coach other positions. It was more of a comment about Richt’s lack of ability to place coaches in the right positions (or hire the right ones for that matter). Martinez should have been coaching the LBs, not the DBs. From what I have read, he is a hell of a good LBs coach…and probably the postion he will coach if he is hired by Florida. But I think Florida is also (and probably mostly) interested in his ability to recruit South Florida. That need someone good to recruit down there ever since Doc Holiday left for the Assistant HC position at WV and now the HC postion at Marshall. While I am on the subject, all this idiots on here saying Meyer is “losing” all his assistant…or they are jumping ship. What idiots…most schools are after Meyer’s assistants…becaue he hires the best and makes them great coaches. Strong even became a better coach under Meyer. When was the last time a Georgia coach left for a better position…or a head coaching postion for that matter. I can count 4 former Meyer coaches that are head coaches right now. Same thing with Saban. Great coaches make coaches better coaches. Meyer and Saban do that. Richt does not. Who would you rather work for if you were an assistant coach with goals to become a head coach? Meyer? Saban? Or Richt?

Considering the ACC’s 1-9 record in BCS bowl games over the past decade — the worst record of the six BCS conferences — expansion didn’t exactly turn the league into the superpower many expected. Instead, the nine other teams have sandwiched their new members into a 12-layer Dagwood of mediocrity.

The ACC hasn’t had a legitimate contender for the national title since 2000, when Florida State lost to Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl.
The question is whether the league can win. And so far, it’s only happened once in BCS history — when Florida State beat Virginia Tech in the 1999 Sugar Bowl. If the ACC is going to be the powerful conference its officials once envisioned, Florida State and Miami have to resurrect their once-proud programs — a task unlikely to happen as early as 2008, in the fifth season post-expansion.

Where’s that imbecile Greg. Where’s your cycle dumbazz?

Let’s see Tech “Man”. UGA gives you 2 short fields with turnovers. You couldn’t score. UGA dropped a TD pass that hit Rentavious Wooten in the hands 10 yards behind your secondary. Joe Cox overthrew an all alone Tavaris King in your end zone. UGA rushed for 339 yards on you. Nesbit and Dwyer had 74 yards between them. At the end of the game the great PJ was so whipped all he could do was heave and hope. This game was nowhere near as close as the score. GT is extremely fortunate not to have lost this game by 3 TDs. Simply put, UGA beat you down.

GTfubar and others – this isn’t a history lesson. As a Dawg fan if you’re satisfied with this season and the win over the nerds then you have failed your own history lesson. Our program deserves to be better and should have been better this year. Changes are needed and obviously important ones are on the way. However, I don’t like to see my fellow Dawg fans puffing up their chest about this season or a win or two (AU and GT) that wasn’t expected. Living off of our laurels is a dangerous way to delude ourselves in the future. We have a bowl game that I think is important to our program and our conference. I would like to see more talk about the game than about someone else’s program. If your motivation is simply to retort the yechies then it means that you are paying attention to them and not to our own program. I ignore idiot posts from the bugs, and I also ignore idiot posts from fellow Dawgs. My recommendation is that you do the same so that we can have some relevant conversations on these blogs. But that’s just my opinion – you hate mongers (from both sides) can waste your time going back and forth for nothing – you don’t really think what you’re posting is changing any minds, do you? This is about his health and his family…not about football or him going anywhere else. As always, Meyer is putting family first…and his health. Life is not just about football. Good for Meyer for putting those things that are most important to him…first…his family…and his health. All I can say is thank you Urban Meyer, for what you did for the entire Gator Nation. Barkin’Dog…nice comments about Meyer. I am stunned. My brother lives in Gainesville and there has been serious concerns about Meyer’s health due to a brain condition he has had since he coached at Notre Dame. Evidently, the conditioned worsened this year due to the stress of coaching a big time program like Florida. Although not life threatening, it can be difficult to live with and impacts Meyer’s ability to do his job. Obviously, he is putting his health and his family above the best coaching job in America.

I will argue the “best coaching job in America” part, but not now. I think all considerate (raised right by their parents, I mean), fans of college football should appreciate what Coach Meyer has done, and be respectful of this hard, unbelieveably hard, decision he had to make… for his health and, ultimately, his family. I, for one, will pull for his quick recovery and soft landing wherever he decides to resume his career. Frankly, I think he will be welcome at Florida for a long time, as part of the direction of the football program. Sorry about your loss, TampaGator… have a Happy New Year, nonetheless.

Mike S…I love Charlie Strong as a coach. But the Florida job is too big for him at this time. I would say Stoops will be contacted first and, this time, he would not have to rebuild the Zook mess. Meyer is leaving the program is great condition. Whoever steps in, and that whoever will be one of the top coaches in America, will continue the winning program in Gainesville. Some recruits may leave, but most will stay, especially if someone like Stoops or the TCU coach comes to Gainesville. I think it will be one of those two.

How you feelin’ Tampa Gator? I hope quite miserable!

All good things come to an end buddy. I knew it was just a matter of time.

That being said, Georgia will have to fight off the hated Gators, Vols, and yes, the Gamecocks next year for the east. Next year could be the evil one’s year in Columbia…..the Chickens might have one of the best QB’s in the SEC as Garcia has finally come alive….and the boy can run like Tebow!

I don’t think the Meyer thing is a farce but it still seems waaaaay too convenient for him to leave when he doesn’t have a spread offense QB for next year. Just too convenient. As slimy as Meyer is, I could see him doing something like this. But there seems to be proof this is a legitimate concern for him(his health) so I’ll back off that a little bit.

I’ll say this….bet you Meyer honestly wants to call it quits for life and family reasons but me thinks he’d be back for another year if his boy,Cry Baby, was a junior this year.

And since Tebow ain’t playing in the NFL, Florida should just hire Tebow as their coach…..now that would be scary for the entire nation! The kid, though a bit of a cry baby, is the best athletic leader I’ve ever seen. Hell, I wish he was in the White House over the turd we have now! At least the rest of the world wouldn’t think we were *ussies.

Unlike Georgia, Texas A & M does not think the Herschal Walker and Lindale Scott led, 42-0 win in Athens on Sept. 13, 1980 will play a role in this game.

To all you arrogant puppy fans out there, listen up. You may have cheated and “won” the match this year, but next year we will send the message as to who really “runs this state.” Jason Nesbitt, our thrower of the ball, will be back while you will have a brand new cornerback to break in. Our running halfbacks will be back too. Your best players are your 4th down kickers for crying out loud!!!

Maybe if the Orange Bowl had given away free cokes, hotdogs and Playboys like they do in Atlanta they could have lured a few more tool fans down there.

How you can fill up Bobby Dodd Stadium

December 28th, 2009
3:01 pm

Here are just a few suggestions for the Georgia Tech Athletic Director to consider since winning football games still will not fill up tiny Bobby Dodd Stadium:
1. Hold a cricket match there (it will appeal to the Indian/Pakistani students that make up the majority at Georgia Tech)
2. Hold a camel race (it will appeal to the Arabs that make up the second largest group on Tech’s campus)
3. Host a Star trek Convention (that will appeal to not only the Tech students but to the Georgia Tech alumni, a guest appearance by William Shatner will have GA Techies flocking in the gates)

Good Luck!

It is Mark Richt! 8 out of 9!!!!! Richt is undefeated on Tech’s “historic” Grant Field.

Why is it historic? Because while it is inside Tech’s Bobby Dodd stadium it is OWNED by the Georgia Bulldogs!

After watching the Independence Bowl last night it really jumps out how bad our defense must really be. If PJ doesn’t fix it we’ll go backwards in the future.

Wow – did you sprain your shoulder from patting yourself on the back? Why do you really think anyone would want to read what you write about yourself? Are you really that self-centered? No, I didn’t read your article – it was boring and means nothing.

Another humiliating bowl loss last night by the ACC. Looks like they are looking at a 1-5 bowl record. Yet again proving to be handsdown the worst football conference ever

It was a down year in the ACC

And that left the door wide open for an inferior team to win the ACC crown and one did.

Why does Las Vegas favor the SEC in the rest of the Bowls? Why did they favor Florida? Why did they favor UGA? I hate SEC fans for thinking they are so much better than the A-sissy! Maybe I should apprieciate the art of flipping hamburgers while drinking a beer and stop my addiction the War Craft. Or just stop talking about football, I know a lot more about dodgeball.–Oops, I thought I was on the I am smarter than you BLOG.
