Urban Meyer near the end of the SEC championship game. (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)
The funniest thing Vince Dooley ever said wasn’t funny at the time. It was as serious as a coronary. Because that’s what Dooley thought he was having.
Oct. 17, 1987: Georgia had contrived to fall two touchdowns behind in Nashville, and the head coach began having chest pains. And Dooley said to himself: “I’m having a heart attack, and we’re losing to Vanderbilt.”
The next day he was at Emory, where he would undergo angioplasty. He was back on the sideline the next Saturday, when the Bulldogs — who had rallied to beat the Commodores one week after losing narrowly to Tommy Hodson and LSU — would need a late touchdown to subdue Kentucky. Some life, huh?
“We won one for the ticker,” a merry Loran Smith said afterward, but it must be noted that Vincent Joseph Dooley coached his last game not 15 months later. At age 56. And he’s still alive today.
The best coach in the country is stepping aside not to coach somewhere else but simply not to coach. Urban Meyer is 45. He’s a high-energy guy. Big-name college coaches have to be. A big-name college coach gets home late and leaves early. He recruits and he coaches and he schmoozes with alums and he briefs the media and he answers the 2 a.m. calls that inform him one of his players has done something silly.
Yeah, the big-name coaches make a ton of money, but they live a life of stress beyond measure. As skilled as Urban Meyer is, would we view him quite the same today if his Gators hadn’t blocked that South Carolina field goal back in 2006? (He’d have been 0-2 against Spurrier and the 2006 Gators wouldn’t have won the BCS title and if they don’t win the first one maybe there’s not a second one.)
The point being: Big-name coaches are all control freaks, and yet they exist in a realm where so much cannot be controlled. The wonder isn’t that one of them has been suffering health problems. The wonder is that they all don’t.
Being human, Georgia fans will view Meyer’s leaving as the sound of a window opening. And it well may be. But before we get excited about what might (or might not) happen on the field, we need to pause to consider these sobering circumstances: Here’s a man at the peak of his profession, a man with two BCS titles, a man not yet 50 … and he’s walking away because he felt to keep coaching was to die young.
It was reported that Meyer had checked into a Gainesville hospital the day after Florida lost the SEC title game to Alabama for what was called “dehydration.” We now know that he’d been having chest pains. We now know those chest pains were dire enough to drive him away from the best job in the country, and that’s about as dire as it gets.
All coaches are strivers — striving for the next big win, the next big job, the next big trophy. Urban Meyer had won everything there was to win, but when the doctor shows you the cardiogram, all that striving and winning becomes a secondary concern. Job 1 is to stay alive.
Because this is a sports column, we need pay some attention to sports. Who’ll be next as the head Gator? Well, Charlie Strong just left for Louisville and Dan Mullen is coming off his first year in Starkville. Would they be interested in turning around so soon? Would Bob Stoops’ interest be piqued this time? Would Chris Petersen leave Boise for Gainesville? Is Gary Patterson of TCU an option?
I don’t know the answers. Ninety minutes ago, I didn’t know Florida would be looking for a coach. And to be honest, I’m not really thinking about the next coach just yet. I’m thinking about Urban Meyer.
We’ve had some fun with him in this space over time, but there was never a doubt he was a talent and a force. (His game-planning for Ohio State in the desert in January 2007 was coaching at its finest.) And now he’s leaving the job of jobs at age 45. If that doesn’t make you think, you don’t have a heart.

Something does not make sense here. I have had a heart attack, and have six stints, all installed at different times. One does not go to the hospital multiple times with chest pains today. You go once. If nothing shows on the cardiogram, you go home and take antacid. If something looks funny, they do an angiogram immediately, find out whats wrong and go in and fix it. You are back to normal in a few days.
It will be interesting to see what develops.

Nice article, Mark, especially from someone who has written unflattering comments about the man. But it is a sad night for all Gator fans. But we all wish Urban Meyer a return to health and happiness that being with family will bring him. The Gator program will survive Meyer leaving and will continue to be successful, whomever comes to be the head coach in Gainesville. And top recruits will come whenever the new coach is named. But, for now, we wish Urban to best in the future after what had to be the hardest decision he has ever made in his life…leaving the program he loves so much…and more importantly, the players he loves and has committed himself so much to. Urban Meyer is and will always be a big part of Gator Nation.

Why did Meyer quit?
December 26th, 2009
9:07 pm
Until today, here’s what I thought. I thought he would quit coaching Florida after 2009. I didn’t think he’d want any part of trying to rebuild Florida after 2009 after all the players and coaches bolted. I thought when he thought about the rebuilding process, and going up against Richt for the next 4 years, he would figure he wouldn’t win a lot and yet the toll on him would be a lot of stress and not much to show for it for the next 4 years. Until today’s news, that’s what I thought. After today’s news, who knows what to think about why Meyer quit. I always thought he’d quit coaching the Gators after 2009, but I didn’t think he’d give this reason- poor health. Some guys just arn’t cut out for being a head coach in the SEC over the long term. Guys like Richt are long term marathoners, guys like Meyer are short term sprinters. Meyer made the right decision to quit coaching the Gators after 2009. I support his decision and wish him the best.

I don’t think there’s any arguing about it, BnB. Florida is the best job in the country. Even when the Gators had never won an SEC title, Paul W. Bryant said: “If they get the right man there, they’ll win for 20 years.”

I think the new coach will either be Mullen from MSU or Willingham from Utah. Either one would be a good replacement. Willingham is the more established winner and comes from the same school as Meyer. So I am now leaning towards Willingham getting the job because of his success, his rep, his ability to recruit, and that he runs a similar offense…and will probably keep a lot of the current assistant coaches. I think Foley will go after Willingham first and then Mullen is Willingham is concerned about following a modern legend like Meyer.

Just like I was glad when Spurrier came back into the conference, I’m sorry to Meyer leave because competition makes us all better. I’m hesitant to challenge anyone principles and beliefs but I believe actions speak louder than words and I think Meyer along with Richt needed and need, respectively, to behave like they talk, so needless to say, I’m not that crazy about either one of them as people. I don’t think that snarl on Richt’s face from the poweraide bath came from someone with a “peaceful” heart, and I saw Meyer give a look at a referee that would have made Hannibel Lecter proud, I mean proud. But best wishes to him regarding his health and I hope Florida gets a great coach and so do we, as soon as the big money boys realize the CWM was a symptom not the pathology.

I know Florida generally has an offensive minded HC, but the biggest key is who will be the DC. Defense wins championships….especially in the SEC.

Mark, I suppose this is a topic for another day, but I believe
this puts a bit more pressure on CMR . He now has opportunity
reminincent of a few years back when the Dawgs were playing for
the SEC championship. CMR failed to seize on an opportunity to
take full control of the east back then. I think therein is the
pressure because I don’t think he can afford to miss a second chance.
This pick for DC is in my mind looms especially important.

My prayer is that Coach Meyer returns to full health and college football. In the meantime I think Florida ought to hire Tampa Gator, He’s seems to know so much about college coaching. After all, he just pointed out that the coach with the 4th or 5th (Like Coach Bowden I forget the details these days) highest winning percentage in college football with at least 5 years on the job is not “good enough.” BTW, that percentage has been accomplished while coaching in the toughest conference in college football with a schedule that annually is ranked as one of the most difficult in the nation. I hope Mr. Foley is that dumb – doubtful though.

Mark – I personally fell very strongly that I have the best job in the country. I’m 63 years old and am feeling very little stress doing the same job I’ve been doing for 29 years. Now, as for the best coaching job in the nation, I’m not sure it is really possible to pick one or even three that are better than the rest. Apparently being the head coach at Florida is somewhat stressful. If that makes it the best job in college coaching, that seems a little strange to me. I mean you do it for 5 years and you resign because of the stress? Doesn’t sound like such a hot job to me, but that’s just me I guess. Could it be that being the head football coach at Utah might be a better job when all things, like quality of life, etc. are considered? My point is what factors go into determining what makes a job a good job or a bad job. If it kills you, it is not a good job.
The most important thing right now is for Coach Meyer to get healthy. While I would like to see him get back into coaching college football again, if it’s not good for his heath, he clearly should not come back.

Mr. Bradley,
These are my thoughts on the Urban Meyer story:
As far as I’m concerned, Urban Meyer is one of the greatest coaches in the history of college football. It takes a lot for this Georgia fan to scribe those words in print. But, the man has earned my respect.
Prior to becoming the head coach at Florida, Coach Meyer did something no one else could do. He made us discuss Utah as a possible BCS buster and long shot for national title recognition. His undefeated Utes failed to receive an invitation to play in the BCS Championship Game. But, Meyer emblazoned Utah football with a newly acquired tradition of excellence. To this day, that program is better because of the legacy he carved in Salt Lake City.
In 2004, Meyer was hired as head coach of the Florida Gators. In five
“Swamped-out” seasons, he guided the Gators to 3 SEC East titles, 2 national championships, and 3 BCS Bowls.
As a Georgia fan, I wish the Dawgs would have had more success against Meyer in Jacksonville. But, as an SEC fan, it’s a sad day when a coach of his caliber decides to step down. I don’t know all the details behind Meyer’s stunning resignation. And honestly, it ain’t my business anyway. I wish Urban Meyer the best… just not against UGA if he comes back to Gainesville.
Here’s a link for ya. Urban Meyer describes his coaching philosophy.

In 4 years. Herschel only played 3. Herschel AVG TD per game played is much higher than Tebow’s

Mark we attempt to tread lightly here, fully aware of the delicate sensibilities that might be upset when discussing the machinations of the inner sanctum. But how exactly, if we may ask, are you summoned to the task at hand when stories like this break? We know Furman would be at his trusty Royal-or is it Underwood?-and the printers would be primed for a late night run.
But how does it work for you?
Are you sitting at the television, partaking in the essence of Americana that is the Meineke Car Care Bowl, when the story breaks, and thus feel compelled to weigh in as the self proclaimed blogging fool of the AJC?
Or is there a special AJC Blog Signal, not unlike the Bat Signal that flashes across the sky when news breaks, that summons you?
Or are you on call like the proverbial fireman for 48 hour shifts, come what may?
Does Brad Childress text you the blog topic, after the whistle blows on the last blog topic?
And speaking of Childress, if something truly important comes up, like overtime in the Meineke Car Care Bowl, or a Junior Samples retrospective on the History Channel, are you allowed to call an audible and post later?
Rest assured Mark, there is nothing more sinister afoot than idle curiosity in the asking.

According the Florida’s spokesperson, in the NY TIMES, Meyer wanted to hang out with his family more and live a more balanced lifestyle. It seems to me Meyer chose to see the world in Black and White, Either/Or’s. Head Coach or family. Head Coach or health. Head Coach or Balanced Life. All or Nothing.
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/27/sports/ncaafootball/27florida.html
Richt’s obviously a different kind of “Both/AND” coach who believes you can have a close family/manage stress/excellent physical health/deep spirituality AND be a Wildly Successful Head Coach in the SEC. Probably why Richt’s lasted longer than any other active SEC Coach.

Matt – compare their first three years – not even close. You see, I think that speaks for itself. Keep trying. BTW – I’m a big fan of Tebow’s, but his freshman, sophomore and junior years are not as impressive as Herschel’s. However, there is more to it obviously. One played when the regular season was 11 games and no conference championship game. The other played 12 game regular seasons, etc. One was a great running back. The other was the greatest leader in the history of college football IMHO. I know I would have loved to have had both on the same team. Now that would have been something to behold! The ultimate question might be which one meant the most to his team. Now that’s a tough one to answer, but I was at all of the games during HW”s freshman season and think it is safe to say, that Georgia would have lost at least the UT, UF and Auburn games that year without HW. Would have probably lost the South Carolina game as well. Tebow may have been that influential for Florida as well. It’s a difficult call.

You know what……if I were a Gator Fan (and thank the good Lord I am not) I would look at this as an exciting time. There is no way that UF is not going to hire a top notch HC, and that whole process, and watching what he does over the next few years will not be dull, to say the least.
And as odd as it sounds, Fl was in danger of going stale. Not bad, just, “what have you done for me lately?”. Obviously if Meyers was reaching this point, I don’t think it’s a given that the next couple of years were guaranteed sucess at the level of the past 2. New guy doesnt win a NC right out of the box (or maybe he can) but so what? I would think that part of fun is watching it get there, and now you get some new hotshot hell bent on it.
I do see this as a totally different situation than when Spurrier left. First of all, it seemed to me that SOS was going through the motions for his past 2 yrs and the program is left in much better health now. And that was a situation of following the legend. You dont want to be that guy, you want to be the next guy. Following Meyers is tough too, but the lids off now. They will lined up this time.
You’ll got to give Fl credit for one thing. Ol’ Ben taught them how pick the fruit at the peak of ripeness.

I know this Meyer thing is news but I’m surprised no one else is reporting on the other story out of Gainesville.
Turns out U.S. fighter jets were scrambled to intercept over two dozen Russian MiG fighters seen over Gainesville right after the announcement. Citizens were understandably worried, the freeways were becoming jammed in mass panic, until the governor issued the followed statement on the state’s Emergency Broadcast Network.
Please be assured, despite the abnormal activity you see in the skies, there is no need to panic. We have confirmed with AD Foley that Willie Martinez is not being considered to replace Urban Meyer. Repeat, Willie Martinez is NOT being considered.

He is quitting because he knows Florida’s glory is over for a while. He has had college footballs best player for most of his time there and now he is actually going to have to coach. In addition, it is clear that FSU beat him in recruiting this year…the tide is turning there and he knows it…The Alabama game also brought reality to Florida…they are definitely on the way down now.

Well, as a UGA fan I have mixed feelings. Part of me knows that meyer leaving gives uga an easier road no matter who they get, but on the other hand I want UGA to face the best that a team has. That’s what is so great about the SEC, they have richt, spurrier, meyer (until now), Saban, and miles, then there are young coaches with some good resumes like nutt, petrino, kiffin, and chizik. Personally if I was UF, I would swallow my pride and do anything I could to bring back spurrier. I know it ended badly, but he is a great coach (as much as I hate the guy) and with recruits what he could do would be dangerous. As for paul johnson getting a call, you have to be kidding me. I think just about everyone in the sec knows that there is no way that offense would work against a sec defense week in, week out. This was uga’s worse defense in a long time and they slowed the offense down, look at what lsu did last year. I think everyone in the country knows that tech won’t win a NC with that offense, and especially with the defense that he has at all the schools he’s been to. GT will upset some teams, and in the acc might compete, they will not be able to get over that hurdle. A good gameplan and lack of talent will only get you so far, eventually talent will prevail and the truth is tech won’t get the talent with that offense not being able to translate to the nfl. Truth is if that offense was that great, everyone would be running it.
All that really means nothing though, I hope the guy gets healthy and has a healthy life ahead of him whether that is coming back and coaching or whatever else.

Bryant and Doolie helped to make Southern football what it currently is today .. the best in the world (Bryant), and so profitable that Southern schools make enough money on football to build entire athletic programs that can compete with the schools in the much wealthier portions of the country (Dooley).
Bryant was a coach Meyer was hoping to be, and was on his way. Dooley was a complete athletic department builder that Meyer would be foolish to even attempt. Dooley was bigger off the field for Georgia than he was on it, which was no small task.
Too bad so many people only focus on W-L and Championships, as those are just small brush strokes in the masterpiece that Dooley painted. UGA went from a hick school to one of the most profitable schools in the country, and it’s academics have gotten much better along with that growth. Between Dooley and the tax breaks given in the late 70’s and 80’s to big companies that came into Georgia, the state went from Appalachia to the center of technology and commerce for the entire Southeast. Meyer’s impact on Florida and the Southeast is inconsequential in comparison to Dooley… but he was arguably already the better coach.

The 4 letter network says UF should go after a Stoops (Oklahoma Bob or Arizona Mike). Not a bad recommendation. But, Meyer will definitely be a hard act to follow.

Mark, if you think no one saw this coming, you’re the one in denial. It’s no secret that UF and Urban were going to have a tough road to hoe without Tebow, Spikes, Doe, Cooper, James, Pierre-Louis, and a few Jr’s bolting for the NFL, and a new DC. And with all attention UT has been getting by the NCAA, I’m sure Kiffin, is trying to deflect some of the heat elsewhere by whispering to NCAA to look closely at UF.
This is the one thing that sticks out in my mind; the quote that CUM condition is “NOT LIFE THREATING”. If this is true why quit? Meyer was diagnosed with the brain Cyst 11 years ago; why is it a problem now? Sorry Mark something doesn’t add up here.
And if you think Foley didn’t know about his HC’s medial history; that he’s paying millions to, your nuts. My guess is Meyer had assured Foley this wouldn’t be an issue, and he could do the job. Foley was operating on the assumption that this was true; Meyer saw the writing on the wall that the next two or three seasons would be even more stressful and difficult to live up to past expectations and said I’d better get out now.

Mark we attempt to tread lightly here, fully aware of the delicate sensibilities that might be upset when discussing the machinations of the inner sanctum. But how exactly, if we may ask, are you summoned to the task at hand when stories like this break?
Are you sitting at the television, enjoying yet another Meineke Car Care Bowl classic, when the story breaks, and thus feel compelled to weigh in as the self proclaimed blogging fool of the AJC?
Does the AJC have a Blog Signal, like Gotham’s Bat Signal that flashes in the night to summon you?
Or is it like being the proverbial fireman, on call for 48 hour shifts, come what may?
Does Brad Childress text you the blog topic, after the whistle blows on the last blog topic?
And speaking of Childress, if something truly important comes up, like overtime in the Meineke Car Care Bowl, or a Junior Samples retrospective on the History Channel, are you allowed to call an audible and post later?
Rest assured Mark, there is nothing more sinister afoot than idle curiosity in the asking.

I can’t help to wonder how long it will be before Meyer coaches again. I believe Meyer thought this year he was going to lead Florida to their 1st undefeated season ever and another NC, since they were returning 21 of 22 starters from the ‘08 NC team, and when those plans fell apart in the SEC Championship game he was stuck with the reality that, although talented, he would be starting off from scratch next year. Face it: Meyer had nowhere to go but down at Florida as for acoplishments. And we all know he has too much ego to sit 2nd tier to anyone –or any other program. It may be years, if ever, before he won another NC. So with millions in the bank he can rest until he feels ready to go again, with the right opprotunity, of coase. There’s no doubt he has some health concerns, but upon his own admitance, this has been something he’s known about since ‘00-’01 –well before he ever took on the Florida job. And I’m not saying that being a CFB coach in the top conference in the land doesn’t cause stress, because it does, and can & will take it’s toll. What I am saying is that this may well be his ‘resting’ period — before he returns in 3-4 years. Once a coach, always a coach.

Hate to see this turn of events. As a Dawg I wanted to compete against Urban’s Gators when the stars weren’t fully aligned (Tebow whom he didn’t even recruit but was the perfect fit for his O) to see how Dawgs stacked up. Guess we will never know.
This is the point that no one seems to be addressing regarding this. UF is a monster that thanks to Spurrier has to be fed and fed big time. (See Zook and now the toil on Meyer to maintain this level) this is no slam dunk for the next potential coach. Expectations are NC or nothing. Evidence one loss this year, Sugar Bowl trip and the UF base is not happy (see poor ticket sales).

Now Boxing day will be known as Urban day.
As a Dawg I am sad to see him go. Why you may ask? And you may ask. It is the age old story. If you want to be the best, you have to play and beat the best. I always felt as long as Urban was at UF, if we beat them, then we were “the best”. I am not an Urban fan, but he was a heck of a head coach. Godspeed Urban.

As a member of the Gator Nation, I appreciate the great job you’ve done as our football coach. I’m sure Foley will bring in a top notch coach, not another Zook – Jeremy likes his job too much to think he could make that type of mistake twice. Although, Zook was 2-1 v. the Dawgs… I’m sure that left a scar. Go Gators!

Agree 100% with Paul. Credit Meyers for announcing this now. Sooner the better. This is prime resume time for college coaches. And signing day for recruiting is a month or so away. I think he handled it as well as anyone could.
I don’t know if I really buy into this praise for Meyers coming to this decision in the first place though. I know he loved the job and I have no doubt it was difficult to deal with, to accept and admit, but figuring out if you don’t want to DIE doesn’t really seem that magnanomous. He was about to pop a vein from stress, self imposed it sounds like. I’m sure his family appreciates the idea of him spending more time with them, but it sounds like he tried every way possible to NOT do this.

Since Meyer’s resignation speaks to the important things in life, and since this is your last day of the year, perhaps you can answer a question Mark. Yes, to pose this to an intrepid sports reporter is outside the scope of your domain, but with the holidays upon us, I hope you’ll sense my pain at the following and provide some solace.
In order to bring some humor to the holidays, I gave loved ones gift cards to various stores; stores carefully chosen for the common denominator that they had all gone out of business.
It was a combination Christmas and April Fool’s gift, which I was sure would be the hijinks highlight of the season, and thus provide great joy to all involved. But all I got was an attitude of derision, with accusations of being a cheapskate.
In light of this Urban Meyer story, why can’t loved ones just be grateful sometimes?

God bless Urban Meyer for having the foresight (and the courage) to take a timeout…
Spurrier will return to Gainesville… you can bet that those discussions are already taking place. He will negotiate a graceful exit from Columbia (both sides know, at this point, that recruiting at USC is just too tall a hurdle for anyone…) and make a triumphant return to UF, where he will win one more SEC Championship (no national championship this time… the hunger for that level of success is gone from Spurrier…). After that, he will retire from football and go out the way he always dreamed of going out… with the Redskins and Gamecocks long forgotten, and his beloved Gators champions once again…

God bless Urban Meyer for having the foresight (and courage) to call a timeout…
My bet: Spurrier will return to Gainesville and lead the Gators to another SEC Championship (I don’t think that he has the drive necessary to win another National Championship, but I wouldn’t rule that out either…) and, after that, he will retire from football. To make this happen, he will negotiate a graceful exit from Columbia (both sides know by now that he cannot recruit the kids he needs to make his system work at USC), then return triumphantly to The Swamp and go out the way he always dreamed: The Redskins and Gamecocks long forgotten… the Gators as champions once again… and Steve Spurrier riding out of that stadium one last time on the shoulders of the players who (in his mind) will carry on his legacy at the University of Florida…
I don’t know how it will happen, but it will happen… it’s a storyline filled with drama that is simply too incredible to ignore…

I’m amazed at some of the posted comments. No wonder this country is in trouble with such idiots totally lacking in sensitivity to the travails of the human condition. I’m a Georgia fan. I’ve been so all my seventy some years. Recruited in the days when it was legal. Put one or two into red and black. I take second seat to no one in my love for Georgia. But to ignore and denigrate the plight of man that has to retire at age 45 because he’s physically incapable of coaching anymore? What is wrong with these people, these mental dwarfs? I think it absolutely disgusting, reprehensible and IGNORANT to treat this story as an us vs. them situation. For shame! WTF are you thinking, you dumb bells?????????? I’m ashamed of those who say they love the DAWGS and are totally insensitive to this man, this human being’s situation.. They don’t deserve to say they love Georgia. If I knew who they were, I wouldn’t sit on the same row with them. They are disgusting vermin.
Did I like Meyer? Absolutely not. He beat us like a tom-tom except in 2007. But he’s a great football coach, a great organizer, an amazing recruiter. There is no question about that. Two NCs? Nobody else has done it in the BCS system.
Sail on Urban with health and happiness. God love you. And if you come back, I hope we beat your butt. Amen.

Just as I believe I should respect the office of the President of the United States, even if I don’t care for the man who holds the position; as a UGA fan, I hate the Coach of the University of Florida, but have no ill will toward the man who holds the position. I hope Urban Meyer is able to restore his health and return to coaching in a nice position outside the SEC.
With that said, I wonder how much the prospects of playing next season without Tebow and his fellow Senior classmates, as well as most of the best Juniors on the team, played into Meyer’s decision. If he was going to be tough to match the level of success he’s had up to this point. I’m sure his health was a factor, but I wonder if Meyer looked at next year’s team and said to himself, “We’re going to be lucky to win 8 games in 2010 and some of the fans will be calling for my resignation before it’s over. Walking out on top might be the best career move I can make.”

Meyer is a very intense individual…not much, if any, fun about him…combined with the loss of this year’s seniors, no DC, an OC with one year of experience, the amount of time he expended worrying and recruiting when everything was “running smoothly”, you can only imagine how the new stress impacted the perfectionist that Meyer is….the price of chasing perfection in a high stakes profession is too high for most people….Meyer proved it….

Listen, according to Meyer’s previous record…a heart attack would produce a half games’s absense. With a possible 26 halfgames…no way he could survive a whoe season. I wouldn’t be suprised if he cited the celebration penalty as one of the causes of his resignation…after all “it will be forever in the mind of the Florida Gators and forever in the mind of Urban Meyer.” Maybe now that the Refs have gotten over their payback and Meyer is gone…hopefully UGA will start off on a level playing field against the Gators!

UPDATE:
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) – A source close to the program said late Saturday that Tim Tebow called Florida coach Urban Meyer’s cell phone at approximately 11:48 p.m. asking him to follow the quarterback to his NFL destination in a personal consultant role. Earlier in the day, the Gator headman stepped down citing health concerns related to his admittance into the hospital following the SEC Championship game. The source, who claims to have overheard the conversation because Meyer had Tebow on speakerphone, reportedly heard the former Heisman Trophy winner “singing Robin Thicke’s Sex Therapy off key”. The source said Meyer began humming along at which time he vacated the area. There is no word as of early Sunday whether Meyer will accept Tebow’s offer.

But alas, unlike the typical Techie, I don’t hide behind the accomplishments of other teams. I am a Georgia fan win or lose. In your case Techie, we’re on the WIN side of the equation. Coach Mark Richt has taken alot of heat, but when you see that he is the fourth winningest coach in the last five years that says something. Alot of people have taken shots at him for having his wife a water girl, his faith, and his family. And alot of people are now saying that this is a great break for him with Florida. You have to admire him for being able to balance everything. Something that Coach Meyer couldn’t do. There is so much pressure to win. Our society is so spoiled that it seems that is all that counts. All coaches are under so much pressure. Some can handle it and some can’t.

I think one of the best names may have been June Jones, he runs a high power offense and he can turn a program around ( look at SMU and Hawaii), He is a good quarterback coach and they will get a good DC to go with the offense.

I am just temporary but I do own a win over Tech. Shreveport has one of the best dog food plants in America and I am touring it before the game. In fact, a whole bus load of Georgia fans will be touring with me since there is almost nothing to do here. I was thinking that whoever becomes DC for Georgia is going to know he was at best third, fourth, fifth choice for the job. I wasn’t first choice for mascot, either. I’m a temp like the coaches in the bowl game. This program is in a sad fix, isn’t it? At least we can get some good buys at the dog food outlet.

It is truly a stunning announcement, especially when you consider the timing. Why didn’t Meyer wait until after the bowl game to announce? Was it to give Foley more time to look for a replacement or to rally his troups for one more win? Either way, Florida is in a similiar position to what Alabama was when they fired Mike Price and hired Mike Shula.
Recruiting is critical this time of year, so I would expect Florida to not take their time finding a replacement. That might mean that they can’t or won’t end up with who they ultimately want to replace Meyer.
Not having Strong or Mullen in Gainesville is the biggest problem because either one of them would have provided the most seemless transition.

Reality is as reality does. All this bitterness from the UGA fans reminds me of when I was a pup and we were pre-season number one. Now, here we are in Shreveport without any coaches and stories in the paper reporting who has already turned us down. Urban Meyer is leaving Florida and any coach worth his salt is going to see if he can coach there instead of in Athens where the head coach doesn’t get to pick his own staff. Heck, even I’m a temp. This is going to get worse before it gets better. Woof!

Speaking from 1st hand experience of actually having heart complications I fully understand Coach Meyer’s situation. Heart disease is a silent killer, many people are not lucky enough to receive a warning sign, it’s simply lights out…..the switch is flipped off and your dead before you hit the floor! It can happen at any age, I had my first experience at 47 years of age and I am HWP and very athletic. It’s a known fact that 65% of all people die from heart complications within 6 years of having their first symptoms. Lifestyle, diet and the ability to reduce or avoid stress full situations are key!
I have the utmost respect for Coach Meyers’ very wise decision and I hate to see him step down because you always want to compete against the best. I am also very thankful that he is still alive today so that he will be able to share and pass along all of his coaching knowledge.

I remember when Coach Spurrier resigned and shocked the world an avid FSU co-worker of mine said “well, there goes Florida Football because Spurrier IS Florida Football!” I told him that no one is above the program, not even Spurrier and I will say that again today. But Gator Nation mourns over a much loved coach in Urban, just like we did that day that SOS walked away. Urban is a great Gator who not only embraced the traditions of Gator Nation but added greatly to it and will always be loved by all true Gators! Our main concern right now is for him and his family and we hope he stays in Gainesville for a long long time…

Meyer was a great coach, he coached the Gators to 2 BCS Titles in 3 years, something Richt can only dream of. Meyer didn’t gain a yard or throw a pass in the 2008 and 2009 blowouts in Jacksonville, the players are still going to be there to dominate the Dawgs again this coming decade. The recruits are still coming, the amazing freshmen and sophomore classes are still enrolled at UF. I will quote one top recruit from yesterday, “If you are not a Gator, you are gatorbait.” You guys know all about that one, have fun at the health company bowl against yet another half a cupcake team in a bowl, Texas A&M, Michigan State, Hawaii……the list goes on.

“Best job”? Why is the head coach position at Florida the “best job”? The best job isn’t one that requires you to sacrifice your personal life and your health so much. The best job does not require you to work seven days a week, 18 hours a day.
The Florida head coach position is not the best job in American, by far. It isn’t the best job in college football by far. It’s a prestigious job, for sure, but not a great job. A great job allows a person to feel a sense of professional accomplishment, have plenty of time to have a personal and family life, get well paid, and not feel stressed out about work. From what I can tell, the Florida head coaching position doesn’t meet two of those four yardsticks.

You’ve heard of Vince Dooley, right? 43-4-1 (.916) from ‘80-’83, perfect season in ‘80, national title, three SEC titles, 4 major bowls (three Sugars, one Cotton), 23-game SEC winning streak (broken by Auburn in ‘83), a Heisman trophy winner, consensus All-Americans (Herschel, Terry Hoage, Kevin Butler).
Best part: 4-0 against Florida during that stretch.

When someone takes the time to type out the two word “Ha” 137 times consecutively to respond to someone in a comments section of a newspaper article, there’s quite possibly a need for them to step back on a smaller scale than Urban Meyer did yesterday and reconsider their priorities in life. I’m just saying.
That said, speaking as a Georgia fan, I wish Mr. Meyer all the best in life, liberty, and happiness. Any man who walks away from a plum job like he had to address his health, faith, and family deserves to be able to walk away with their head held high, and he was (and is) a phenomenal coach. But more importantly. Thanks for the NOW POINTLESS column Mark Bradley. Perhaps thy should not opine until the story is fully known in the future? You are, after all, a professional. You do not get a pass for being an idiot amateur running off at the mouth. You get paid to be a professional.
Urban Meyer reminds us that some things are more important than a ball game? Are you sure you want to keep leaning on him for that reminder now? Seems to me the most important thing to Urban Meyer is Urban Meyer.
LOL. How is that Meyer- burn mate? And, how did that “Tiger was in a car accident (only)” headline work out for you and your media professional buddies? LOL. Seems there was a HELLUVA lot more about that story.
Professional clerks at best.

God bless Mark B too. I am happy he gets paid for his drivel. At least he has a job and tries to be a productive citizen.

I was truly impressed with his decision to put health. With the reversal may just be plot to retain current recruiting class. Head coach in waiting doesn’t seem quite fair for Florida, too much uncertainty. Regardless, wish him the best and a speedy recovery.

Why did Meyer quit?
December 27th, 2009
10:29 pm
Interesting to see Meyer backpedaling on his decision today. Which begs the question, if this was about his heart, why would he change his mind? Now people will be wondering about why Meyer quit since it was not his heart? Lack of drive? Didn’t want to rebuild? Level of competition in SEC? Lack of love for the game–looks a lot like burnout–you can’t burn out on something you love, Bill Gates went 10 years without a day off.

so now Meyer decides to take a leave of absence while he see’s how long before he can go back to being HC at UF it will be tough on the interm coach I don’t think he is the tyoe of man who can give much control over to his assistant coaches he likes to be in control of it all too much unless his dr. says he has too also the stress will still be there fl fans have got used to winning national champs sec champs & very few losses still wish him the best of luck with his health & family despite the fact that fl is 1 of UGA:S biggest rivals. It will be intresting to see how it all plays out when the season opens as always GO DAWGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Cindy

I think its a good time to realize that these coaches, all of them, and players as well, are just human beings, They are not perfect, the fan base doesn’t deserve what they get out of these people much less the more that they demand. We love to rip these people for things we perceive as mistakes or character faults. But this is a time to realize that fans who respond to blogs know nothing about the men they continually criticize nor the situations or circumstances they are in. People should just appreciate and enjoy the jobs these men do and leave the criticism of them to their superiors who are informed and the ranting and raving uninformed should shut their traps.

Why did Meyer quit?
December 28th, 2009
11:19 am
#1 reason: “I-can’t-beat-Mark-Richt-for-4-more-years” itis. Meyer is no idiot. He knows his lucky streak has come to an end. He fears the winningest coach in the land. His quitting was more a testament to Mark Richt than anything. Meyer knows how hard it is to beat Richt. He sees the talent Georgia has, believes Kirby Smart is coming to Georgia, looks at the coaching staffs, and the reality of the situation scared him into quitting. That’s what REALLY happened, regardless of the Meyer spin.

Don’t matter – I’ll concede your two national titles if you concede that Dooley’s 3 SEC titles in 4 years beats Meyer’s 2 SEC titles in 5 years and that Dooley’s 4 consecutive major bowls beats Meyer’s 3 in the same time period. Also, that UF (with Meyer or any other coach) has never had a perfect season like Dooley’s 12-0 in ‘80.
Again, UF didn’t invent college football, but you have taken it to a very high level since 1991. But UF is still the school that didn’t have a single conference crown (factoring in a stripped ‘84 title) from 1932-1990, a mind-boggling record of futility and underachievement that will always be part of the UF football legacy. Do you really want to argue football history on a UGA site?

Do not believe the hype. If this were a medical condition there would be a lot more specifics. Although, if it is a medical condition I wish him and his family the best. However, I feel that it is about money, sadly, as is everything. Urban Meyer will be the head coach and director of operations for the LA Jaguars.

This guy is a professional quitter, Meyer just qit for the 7th time in 24 years. Voluntarily walked away, said goodbye, quit. Who really cares what he does in the future, Meyer will always be a quitter. Meyer has never been able to stay in 1 place for more than 5 or 6 years in his 24 year coaching career. Meyer has the 1-5 year itch. When times get tough, Meyer quits.

Why did Meyer Quit?
December 29th, 2009
10:13 am
It wasn’t his heart, he would have stayed “retired at 45″ if that was REALLY the problem. All you have to do is look at his track record: In 24 years of coaching, Meyer voluntarily quits every 3-4 years. This is Meyer’s 7th time he voluntarily quit on a team. Meyer is a “quit-a-holic”. Meyer quit because he knows if he coaches in Florida in 2010, he’ll lose a lot of games. It’s a rebuilding year. Coaches and players made a mass exodus. His spread offense didn’t work in 2009. Bama killed the spread offense. Bama embarassed Meyer in his only top 10 match up of 2009. Meyer wants a lower level of competition, like his Utah days. He can’t handle the SEC for 9 years like a Mark Richt. That’s why he quit this time, for the 7th time, in 24 years. Meyer quit–again. Same story, different team. Meyer always voluntarily quits within 1-5 years. Different reasons, same result–Meyer quits. Every time.

According to the reports, I’m serious here, Meyer says God told him to quit. Now he’s decided to coach again in 2010? Not good. That’s one voice I would listen to VERY closely. If God tells you to quit, you best give that 2 weeks notice pronto. This is odd too, Meyer says he’s a person of faith, going to put God first now, yet he’s going against God’s direction and guidance for his life when God tells Meyer to quit by unquitting?

Mark,
I thought I had put this matter to rest. But I guess once more for the sake of reality-blogging is acceptable.
Meyer is a self-absorbed, swollen-headed egomaniac. Why else would he pull this crap like he did…right before a major bowl game…right after Addazzio was named interim…shortly after Mack Brown signed that ridiculous contract extension for WAY more money than him…with a less impressive resume?
He put himself in the limelight instead of his team.
Hell, he doesn’t even care about his own family’s feelings! His own “supposed” ill health!
This guy is a cartoon. A self-serving, arrogant prig that deserves a little comeuppance.
