Here's proof Willie Martinez realized pass-rushing was allowed. (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)
Winning doesn’t educate. Winning endorses. Human nature holds that a winner doesn’t ask, “What can I do better?” but says instead, “Why change what works?”
Mark Richt is human. Even in the disappointment of 2008 — Georgia started as preseason No. 1 and landed in the Capital One Bowl — he had his talking points down. And when the Bulldogs beat Michigan State on Jan. 1, 2009, to finish 10-3, he trotted out TP No. 1: Six 10-win seasons out of the past seven was “pretty stinkin’ good.”
In his self-defense, Richt missed the obvious: That something was rotten in the House of Bulldog. All you had to do was screen a video of Richt’s 2002 team followed by one of the 2008 aggregation to see the difference. In 2008 Georgia had more talent but wasn’t as good.
The 2009 season will go down as the worst under Richt, but it many ways it was the best thing that could have happened. As the losses mounted — blown out in Knoxville by a Tennessee team working under a new coach; blown out again in Jacksonville; beaten at home by Kentucky for the first time since Herschel Walker was a sophomore at Johnson County High — it was clear the rot had spread. It took an upset of Georgia Tech for the Bulldogs just to finish above .500, and by then there could be no more pretense.
We’ve known all along Richt is smart. We weren’t sure how demanding he is. Firing three of his four defensive coaches provided the answer. As much as Mark Richt enjoys fellowship among his coaching staff, he enjoys winning more.
We don’t yet know the names of the replacements. We know the Bulldogs head into the Independence Bowl with a defense coordinated by Rodney Garner, the lone holdover, and some grad assistants. (Now watch Georgia shut down Texas A&M. Wouldn’t that be a hoot?) But no matter what happens in the game, there’s cause to believe there’ll be no more Shreveport jaunts in the Bulldogs’ immediate future.
It’s possible Richt could hire someone less adept than Willie Martinez as coordinator. It’s also possible — theoretically, anything’s possible — the sun could rise in the West tomorrow. What’s more apt to happen is an upgrade at the position that can galvanize a program more than the arrival of any five-star recruit.
Steve Spurrier had won four SEC titles and reached a national championship game, but it was only after he hired Bob Stoops to coordinate his defense — a defense that had just yielded 62 points to Nebraska in said championship game — that the Evil Genius took his national title. Mack Brown had posted five consecutive 10-win seasons at Texas, but it was only after he hired Gene Chizik from Auburn (which had just gone 13-0) that the Longhorns were able to win a BCS title. Yes, defensive coordinators matter.
Defensive coordinators matter even more than offensive coordinators. A team that scores on every possession but can’t stop anybody feels vulnerable. (Yes, Georgia Tech, I’m thinking of you.) A team that knows it can stop somebody feels invincible. Offensive success is a function of skill and technique. Defensive success involves physical domination. Georgia used to play that brand of ball — ever heard of Erk Russell? — but had come to dominate nothing under Martinez.
That could well have changed by the time Georgia plays its first post-Shreveport game — Sept. 4, 2010, against Louisiana Lafayette. Even though Bud Foster chose to stay at Virginia Tech and Vic Koenning wound up at Illinois, there are good men out there who will see Georgia as the place to make a name by making a difference. There’s no reason to believe Richt won’t find one.
The tough part is behind him. It took some doing for this coach to convince himself that change wasn’t an option but a necessity, but finally he did it. When you’re accustomed to 10 wins and nice big bowls, nothing slaps you harder than a trip to Shreveport. This wasn’t the destination anyone associated with Georgia wanted, but it was, in the grand scheme, the destination Mark Richt’s program needed.

Kirby Smart will be the next DC. Heres what I think went down. Kirby Smart first said no to the opening and then Richt contacted Koenning who was going to Illinois and Koenning was going to take the UGA job and then Smart called Richt and said he wanted the job and then Richt told Koenning he was going to pass and then Koenning went to Illinois and Smart will be in UGA after they beat Texas to win the NC.

i expect nothing but great things from CMR and UGA as a whole next year. This season has opened our eyes figuratively and literally. At the end of the GT game when the team tried to gatorade bathe him let me know that there are big changes on the horizon and he is committed to getting back to the basics. Mark my words mark. Next year we will see the old hard nosed, bone jarring, intimidating dawg team that we were accustomed to pre CWM.

We both know alot of my fellow bulldawg fans aren’t to awful fond of you Mark. But I actually think your one of the better one’s that work for the Atlanta Urinal and Constipation (no, I’m not to fond of the paper itself). You just tell the truth and sometimes the truth hurts. I don’t see a GT slant in your writing like some like to point out, but even if you are a closet GT fan…who can blame you? You work for an Atlanta paper. Anyway, just asking…you really think the Dawgs have a shot at Smart? Alot of rumors are flying around like it’s a done deal. And have you heard anything about Dick Bumpas from TCU getting any attention for the job? Alot of rumors have flown around about him, but I haven’t officially heard his name mentioned at all. At any rate, Merry Christmas and keep up the good work.

As a faithful dawg fan, I really would like to win a national championship, however I am not sure if the expectations are a little too inflated here in Athens. Our schedule is really tough compared to the other teams in our conference and we have had an influx of players at key positions that has hurt us.If anyone thought Joe Cox was the answer for a national championship or even a conference championship then you are wearing blinders. He was what he was and that is a marginal qb who had more experience than anyone else at that position. Murray will be young next year and he will make mistakes and Georgia will not win any titile next year so stop pumping this team up to do all of these wonderful things when you know they have youth at the most important position, QB!

Mark,
Great column, and by my estimation you’re exactly right. Even after last year when Richt was lamenting the injuries and going ‘thud’ in practice instead of tackling to the ground, it was evident that something was wrong. I believe the right coordinator (and, subsequently, the right hires that this person makes) will do a lot to right the ship. I don’t think it happens in 2010, but maybe the year after that we will start to see the fruits of this tough season.
As for who that D-coordinator will be, I’ve heard rumblings that we should get to know Todd Grantham. Have you heard the same? I don’t know much about him other than the fact that he’s been an NFL D-coordinator and has worked under Saban at some point. Any opinions or thoughts on this guy?

Thanks for working on Christmas Eve and writing something this good.I hope you’re right that Shreveport can be a needed humiliation which leads to better things. One thinks of Alabama getting beaten by La. Monore in Saban’s first year or being humbled by Utah in the Bowl.. I’m not comparing the two programs or the two coaches but just the two experiences which can be catalytic in a positive way. In spite of all the hand-wringing by our fans I’ve never lost confidence in Mark Richt.Any coach can be second guessed. What do you think Florida fans are doing as they look back on the play calling in the Second Half of the SECC? Merry Christmas. Go Dawgs

Hey “Dawgfan13″ The winningest QB (well actually 2nd winningest now) in NCAA history (David Greene) started at UGA as a RS freshman. Don’t county out Aaron Murray my friend. He don’t have Stafford’s arm, but the insiders will tell you he’s a better overall athlete. He’ll have a better supporting cast around him than Greene had and, no offense to Greene, Murray is a far better athlete than he was as a RS freshman. Write it down, 2010 will be a good year to be a UGA fan.

Merry Christmas and Happy Shreveport to the entire, azz hole dog nation!
1. Please be careful as you begin your trek across Northern Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana.
2. If you hit Texas or Arkansas please stop and ask for directions.
3. Please invest in a new road atlas. I hear they have them marked down at all Fred’s and Wal Mart for $4.88. And only $4.99 at Dollar General.
4. Please, before leaving, turn your watch back one hour and your calendar back 30 years. This should be pleasant for you as it will put you near the early 80’s which you own!
5. Please play your Harry Munson Glory Years 8 track tape the entire way over to get your juices flowing so to speak.
6. Please change your oil before you go.
7. Please remember to leave some road kill for those traveling behind you that are more needy.
8. Please DO NOT cook your road kill at any of the rest stops along the way (at least the first ones you come to in each state).
9. I know Georgia travels “well” but please also try to travel discretely.
10. Please, if anything falls off of your truck, just leave it. Remember, there are TWO Wal-Mart’s in Shreveport
11. Please try some of the crawdad stew at the west bound rest area in Vicksburg MS.
12. Please clean up your tailgate trash before entering the Shreveport stadium
13. Please do not leave the stadium in the 3rd or 4th quarter if your team is taking another BEAT DOWN
14. Please do not drive into Kirby Smart’s Birmingham subdivision on your way home.
15. Please do stop by Legion Field in Birmingham and claim your Papa Johns bowl victory for next year.
16. Please refrain from calling or emailing President Adams and Damon Evans until you get home
17. Please make sure your Cable bill is paid up so you can watch real teams play in real (January) bowls.
18. Please make sure your Rivals bill is paid up so you can feel better about yourself and your program before signing day.
19. When spring gets here, please share with us how great your new weedwacker is
20. You are always preseason national champions in my book!

Good job Mark. The defense is what carried the Dawgs under Van Gorder and it’s what will carry UGA moving forward. They have enough talent on the “O” now, that all they need is a DC that is willing to bring a brand of football that imposes it’s will on every opponent.

I saw where Coach Fabris was going to Louisville and Coach Martinez may be going to Miss. St, I do not know about Coach Janoucek. I do hope they end up with good jobs. I appreciate what they did for the program, but I guess it was time for a change. The biggest change has already been seen by the reaction of Coach Richt from the gatorade bath at Tech. I’m not big on predictions, but I do feel that this wake up call will really pay off. I am tired of people downing the bowl in Shreveport. Let the kids go play hard and enjoy it. I also saw where even with a down year, UGA is still in the top ten as popularity goes. That says something about the total athletic program and all the alumni that appreciate and enjoy being and supporting the DAWGS. Like Coach Russell said JUST DO RIGHT! and I feel like UGA does it the Right Way. Great foundation laid by Coach Dooley. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

The defense was very bad at times but cox was bad at times as well. the int’s , the fumbles is what killed UGA.. i don’t care if you are the New England Patriots if you turned the ball over as much as we did your defense is going to suck because you’re on the field 85% of the time, getting rid of martinez was great but cox leaving will be better for UGA!!!

CMR has already canned three coaches (including his DC) and taken away play-calling responsibilies from his OC. Heard the Strength and Conditioning Coach is next. Merry Christmas! That sounds like a house-cleaning to me. Who hired all these incompetents, anyway?
Mark, if the importance of a top-notch DC is apparent even to numbnuts like you and me, how come CMR failed so miserably to act decisively after last year’s pitiful display by his? Certainly, Martinez was no worse a DC this year than he was last year. So what precipitates his firing now?
CMR knows his butt is next if he doesn’t regain control of his program, that’s what.
Seems to me, he’s taking the Captain Queeg approach and blaming all his problems on disloyal and incompetent subordinates.
Anybody notice if CMR has been nervously rolling ball bearings around in his right hand lately?

Shreveport,
That was pretty funny, I have to admit. Not as funny as, say, Tech’s all-world receiver dropping a fourth-down pass that hit him in both hands. And, maybe, not as funny as Reggie Ball forgetting what down it was. But it was pretty funny. 30-24, baby. Talk all you want. The score isn’t going to change.
Mark,
Very good article. I think you’ve pretty much nailed it. I just wish Georgia fans didn’t have such a sense of entitlement. Winning 10 games a year is not a disappointment. Winning 10 games a year for six out of seven years is amazing. If you don’t believe it, just remember back to Ray Goff or Jim Donnan. How often did they win 10 games? For that matter, How often did Dooley win 10 games? Richt has taken this program and made it matter again. To not give him credit for that is absurd.
Keep up the good work.

Don’t know who the next DC is (not naive enough to think it will be Smart) but hope whoever we hire can put a defense on the field that can stop Florida; a one or two game winning streak against these guys would be nice. As nice as it is to beat GT every year it is old news, not even a big game anymore. But Fla?, they have our number and have for 17 out of 20 years. **TO ALL UGA FANS** just ignore the Tech nerds on here. No matter what they say, they know who the better team is. The records and stats prove it. They can’t deny that. Who cares if UGA is going to a bowl that is not as good as Tech? UGA has gone to a better bowl every year this decade. Just ignore them. They are very jealous over the football team, stadium, campus, women, etc. I would be a angry little nerd too if I went to Tech with their high school stadium, nightly robberies/muggings, and ugly girls.

1) With a little better defense, 2 takeaways per game, Georgia is 9-4 or 10-3 in 2009 (Kent & LSU games are won). If you look at defensive points allowed, and yards allowed, those 2 stats predict wins and losses in the SEC pretty well. So Richt diagnosed the a major cause of the problem as defense, and Richt took action to make sure that problem doesn’t re-occur.
2) When you look at the play-call mix of the SEC leaders (pass-run mix), and the run stats, it’s pretty obvious that lack of a running game, and calling a pass-heavy play mix in the first 7 games got Georgia into a lot of trouble. And the 14 INT’s didn’t help–calling high risk pass plays–throwing the ball in high traffic areas. 4 of 5 of Georgia’s losses had 3-4 TO’s by Bobo’s Offense.
3) Bobo’s triple back rotation system was absurd–he was letting Samuel run the ball on 3rd down, when Samuel averaged 1 ypc on 3rd down, for example. If you don’t play your best back, you don’t deserve to win more than 7 or 8 games a year. John Wooden said he tried to get all his players equal time early on, and after studying the situation, decided the team did NOT play better with rotating players–the level and performance dropped. Once Wooden made that ONE change, Wooden went on to win 7 more championships. Richt is 40 wins and only 3 losses when he gets a 100 yard rusher. This triple rb back rotation system of Bobo’s is a bigger problem than people realize and a major cause of Georgia’s ills in 2009. Georgia’s golden years were when Herschel was running the ball 30-40 times a game and racking up 5.27 ypc, Ealey’s at 5.7 ypc, yet only getting 10-15 touches a game. Knowshon Moreno ran the ball well and didn’t rotate and Georgia had it’s best year—that’s how we beat Florida in 2007.

Mark is right. It did take a season like this to change what needed to be changed at UGA. Who knows how long Richt wants to coach at UGA? Maybe that will be part of the deal to try and get smart to UGA. Richt clearly has goals outside of football, but he started my first year at UGA so he will always be my coach. No matter what change is headed to UGA and I can’t wait to see what happens with a new DC. Please dawg fans let’s show other fans how it is done. Be there through thick and thin. Dawgs for life baby.

A certain poster asked why would a high profile DC go to UGA? The answer is simple- it’s one of the premiere coordinator positions in the USA.
Those who talk about the 2008 season actually verify the Dogs status as one of America’s bigtime programs- 10 wins with 19 season ending injuries and it is not good enough in Athens. In certain precincts, a 9 win 2008 season was cause for rejoicing, as was a 7 win 2009 season in another location.

Carlos, I understand your concern with the play calling at times, but i have to disagree. I am dumbfounded when Bobo calls a running play on 3rd and 10, abandons the run when it has been effective, or forgets that we have a couple of tightends who can catch and run. However, I was one among many who screamed for Richt to get an OC years back, just like we have screamed for Martinez’s dismissal. I am confident we are right about CWM but not so confident about CMB. At times, he calls some crafty plays and creates points, yards, and excitement. I don’t think he is the problem when it comes to our offensive difficulties.

dawg4life, getting an NFL guy is not a bad idea. Every time a player goes from one level to the next he sees several things immediately. The players are better and the coaches are better. When I went from High School to the SEC the first words out of my mouth at the first practice was DAMN! Not just the players, but the coaching. More intensity, the Xs and Os get a lot more complex, the pace is faster. Go from college to the NFL and the difference is even more pronounced. More complex systems and coaches that really know how to teach. To take what you already know, build on the good and eliminate the flaws is their forte. They know how to teach the game. But the most noticeable trait is their ability to recognize talent. Unless you’re a 1st rounder with a guaranteed contract it doesn’t matter if you’re from Texas or Fort Valley State. You better bring it at practice every single day. If you can play they see it very quickly. This ability to recognize talent would be a huge asset when it comes to recruiting. Another aspect is the fact that with NFL guys on staff, a recruit that is tagged as potential NFL talent can be told that and virtually guaranteed that the former NFL coach knows what it takes to get him to the league and can coach him up in every area he needs to get there as well as critique his progress at different points in his development. Bringing in an NFL guy could be a very shrewd move. It damn sure wouldn’t disappoint me.

By the way, the year was 1962, Wodden had always rotated lots of players up until the 1963 season. Wodden NEVER won a Natl Championship rotating lots of players. In 1963, he STOPPED rotating players, after analyzing the stats, and decided to go with his best player at each position. He won his 1st Natl Champ in 1963 after he STOPPED ROTATING PLAYERS, and went on to win 10 Natl Champ’s. Something for Bobo and Richt to REALLY think about.

You refer to GT’s stadium as a high school stadium, however, you must not have visited Bobby Dodd stadium in a while. I have not seen too many high school stadiums that seat 55K people and have state-of-the-art training facilities located in the locker room areas. Also, I have never seen a high school stadium that has a jumbotron like Tech’s and skyboxes like we have. Granted, BDS is not a cookie cutter stadium like Sanford, but it is quite a football stadium for playing, watching, and enjoying the college atmosphere.

Just an FYI and you may already know this – Koenning was never offered the job. Had he been, he would’ve jumped on it. I mean the guy’s making less at Illinois than Martinez made. He was a plan B guy and his agent spread that rumor to get him a little more money from the Illini, and it worked.

Georgia committed 2 fumbles against Ga Tech when they rotated Ealey out–Ealey was averaging 15 ypc and broke 120 yards early in the 2nd qrtrt when he was rotated out and benched in the Ga Tech game when King fumbled and made the TO deep in Georgia territory. That could have cost us the game. Ealey for the season is the best at not giving up fumbles–sure the 1 on the goal-line pitch toss in the Kent game–might have been Cox’s fault–we’ll never know—but regardless, that’s it for Ealey. In the Kent game ALONE, King had 2 fumbles and was picked with 2 INT’s when thrown to.

That toss play on the goal line against Kentucky was a strange play and probably a little Cox and a little Ealey. Ealey was thinking get to the hole quickly and the play was designed to give him the option of breaking it outside the tackle if the hole was plugged. Ealey just didn’t delay a count. However, I know UGA has a play where they run the same set and hand the ball to the tail. More a bam bam play. I would have opted for that one. Get Ealey the ball 2 feet off the FB’s butt and get into the hole. Power it in.

Mark, this is not just a case of complacency. Richt keeps trying to repeat the Florida State success of the late 80’s and 90’s. The problem is that he is using the offense, talent evaluation and recruiting mindset of that period as well. The lack of discipline that did not affect his FSU teams back in the day make a huge difference today. Lining up 4 and 5 star recruits without any apparent plan accomplishes what, exactly? Georgia program is adrift. The perma-tanned one has lost his bearings as a coach– his team and program have NO identity , other than playing 2nd fiddle to Florida and possibly 3rd fiddle to UT in the near future. Tough fact for Mutt fans to face, but there it is.

Playing with one healthy LB, zero healthy DE, a bunch of first year OL, is some pretty compelling talking points.
Can we finally admit that no voter in thier right mind would have had them #1 going into 2008 if they knew the number of players they would have to compete with? Or does that just mess up the critical talking points? I am blown away at the by the idea of ignoring that “more talented” would only matter if they were on the field.
Wail away on 2009, it wasn’t good, but even mentioning 2008 to support anything just doesnt hold water. It was not comparable to any season before or after.
Simple acid test. What does UGA do in 2008 with a healthy team, if it limped to 10 wins with perhaps the most beat up team in the country?

To all the Uga fans out there, a 6 piont win is not a but kicking. It took ga to played there best game and TECH to played there worst and still almost beat you.I think even ga fans know things could have realy got ugly for them if we were playing better!!Enjoy your 6 piont win and your 39th ranked team in your bowl.

According to Philadelphia Eagles players, the most courageous man on the team in 2009 was one who started the year serving time in prison for an act of extreme cowardice.
Today, the Eagles announced that Michael Vick was the 2009 winner of the Ed Block Courage Award, an honor given to a player who shows courage in the face of adversity. Vick’s teammates voted for the award, thus demonstrating how tone-deaf and out-of-touch NFL players are with reality.
According to the Ed Block Courage Award Foundation Web site:
Each year, the Ed Block Courage Awards honors those National Football League players who exemplify commitments to the principles of sportsmanship and courage. Recipients are selected by their teammates for team effort, as well as individual performance.
The Ed Block Courage Award recipient symbolizes professionalism, great strength and dedication. He is also a community role model.
One recipient is selected from each NFL team, usually for things like coming back from injury, doing good work in the community or long, dedicated service to a franchise. I’d be surprised if the award’s founders intended for the honor to be given to someone doing community service as part of the terms of his parole or for showing courage in the face of reporters asking legitimate questions about federal crimes.
The Eagles’ vote is not only a slap in the face to the Ed Block Courage Award Foundation, but to the other 31 players who won the award for their respective teams. Some men are truly deserving of the honor, like Ravens safety Dawan Landry(notes) who was nearly paralyzed last year, but has come back in ‘09 with four interceptions and a touchdown or Mike Furrey(notes) of the Browns, who does extensive volunteer work in his community. Adding Vick’s name to the roll makes the award seem illegitimate and meaningless.
Apparently Philadelphia players confuse Vick handling dogfighting questions and booing with a measure of class as some sort of courage. That Vick only got a chance to show this mild courageousness because of the extreme cowardice it takes to murder helpless animals isn’t something that crosses their mind. They confuse Vick’s desperation with some sort of integrity.
I’m all for second chances and find myself rooting for Vick to redeem himself both on and off the football field. He’s served an appropriate sentence (and then some) and I see no reason for him to keep paying for his past transgressions. But I also see no reason to celebrate his character.
Michael Vick(notes) is very much a work in progress. A few years from now, I hope he will be deserving of such an honor. At this time, however, he has only just started down the path to redemption.

It is asinine to think that Paul Johnson did’not know the importance of the UGA-GT game. They did after all get rings made after last years win, and he also traveled to all three Tech booster clubs and crow about how great both he and Tech’s program was. Tech fans pay close attention to the way that he behaves after you lose the Bowl game this year and next year when you no longer have Dwyer, Bey-Be or Morgan and you lose 3-4 more games then this year. The simple fact is that in the state of Georgia, UGA is the more relevant program by a long way. I look forward to seeing y’all in Athens next year. It will be alot of fun.

“$1.4 million Shreveport vs. our $14 million BCS Orange bowl” … dude (or dudette), do you understand that $14 million is shared by all teams in the ACC??
After deducting the expenses each bowl-bound school incurs for the trip to the bowl, the remaining $$ is divided among all school’s in the conference. So if you consider that the SEC is sending 9 teams to bowls, including the Nat’l Championship … The avg payout for each SEC school will be significantly more. Here’s a summary::
ACC Bowls::
Emerald Bowl = Boston College vs. USC = $750,000
Meineke Bowl = North Carolina vs. Pitt = $1,000,000
Music City Bowl = Clemson vs. Kentucky = $1,650,000
Champs Sports Bowl = Miami vs. Wisconsin = $2,130,000
Gator Bowl = FL State vs. West VA = $2,250,000
Chick-fil-A Bowl = VA Tech vs. Tennessee = $5,830,000
Orange Bowl = GA Tech vs. Iowa = $17,000,000
Total ACC = $30,610,000
SEC Bowls::
Independence Bowl = Georgia vs. Texas A&M = $1,100,000
Liberty Bowl = Arkansas vs. E Carolina = $1,350,000
Music City Bowl = Kentucky vs. Clemson = $1,650,000
Cotton Bowl = Ole Miss vs. OK State = $3,000,000
Outback Bowl = Auburn vs. Northwestern = $3,100,000
Capital One Bowl = LSU vs. Penn State = $4,250,000
Chick-fil-A Bowl = Tennessee vs. VA Tech = $5,830,000
Sugar Bowl = Florida vs. Cincinnati = $17,000,000
Nat’l Champ. = Alabama vs. Texas = $17,000,000
Total SEC = $54,280,000
So the bottom line is, change your screen name and quit making GT fans sound like idiots.

It’s amazing when you get a sincere response on these blogs such as the one from GT93 which was acknowledged for respect and insightful discussions and yet the 1.4 million guy goes to the gutter. It’s a sad observation…but an excellent article Mark.
Your one comment regarding looking at the tape from the less talented ‘02 team compared to the more talented ‘08 team was spot on as well as the fact that Spurrier and Mack Brown didn’t reach the top until they brought the right guy in for DC. You called it pre or mid season I think about this program becoming a middling SEC team. This is the first year under Richt I was afraid of losing most every game and it was baffling. Other than Curran, I missed the playmakers of the past like Pollack, Davis and Jones. I have confidence Richt will right the ship and while there are a lot of problems, Aaron Murray had moments in the spring game that were bright. When asked why he had such a successful record in away games (discount Jax), Richt said the most important component was a quarterback who could focus and keep his cool, i.e., David Greene.
Happy Holidays to you and yours and thanks as always

Say what Richt will, his team did not improve one whit this year in terms of penalties or number of arrests. The undisciplined, unprincipled and not very intelligent players he recruits are – quite simply – uncoachable. The W-L record may improve slightly next year, but UGA will not be competitive against the top teams in the SEC. Richt has had his highwater mark, and he’s now on the long slide to irrelevancy.

I wish I knew. In my own case, its lack of $$ with this great economy. That’s not an excuse, just a fact. I might also ponder that Tuesday Jan. 6th is a tough day for many to get away from work (especially being after the holidays and most companies wanting to get back to business as usual). And there’s also the unfortunate reality that GT’s fan base is just not that big in comparison to the typical state school (Iowa for example).

We have no real chance in this game, IMOH. A&M is amped up and ready (read some stories in the Texas newspapers) while the Dawg players are bored and low on being in Shreveport for Christmas, our defense is being coached by grad students, and the offense only has a running game to work with. 7-6 “yay.” This team is going nowhere.

Richt has reached his high water mark at Georgia. Unfortunately the tide has turned, and the Dawgs will slump back to the mid tier of the SEC. The Tide will beat down Georgia for years to come, and it looks like Tenn will take GA’s place in finishing second to the Gators in the East. Heck it even looks like SC will give GA a run for its money in the East. Y’all should have enjoyed it while it lasted.
Also, the Georiga win over Tech was a fluke. It looked to me like Tech wasn’t even up for the game, which was a head scratcher. I doubt that happens again any time soon. Enjoy that one too while you can, cause Johnson might put up 50 in Athens next year.
Shreveport sux compared to Pasadena now doesn’t it. Can’t wait until the Tide gets another shot to slap the hapless bulldogs around again.

Tech can kiss my Red and Black ….Reality check for UGA and Tech fans – the days of winning streak dominance may be at an end. While nothing brings a smile to my face more than walking out onto Techwood and North Ave. after yet another UGA victory, the fact is as long as Paul Johnson remains at the Flats, this rivalry will be just that – every year, both schools will think they’ve got a legit shot. (Reminds me of the Bobby Ross years. I went to every UGA – UF game in Jax during the 80s – talk about a lack of a rivalry. That worm has turned – we need to bring our game back to the level of the Gators, just as Tech has done in regards to UGA.) Other than Clemson, VT and FSU, the other stadiums in the ACC (and their crowds) are a joke – I’ve see better atmospheres at I – AA games! Tech should be at or near ten wins every time the Hate Game rolls around. With our conference schedule (not to mention the out of conference BCS games we play), we will always have to achieve at an incredibly high level to match Tech’s record. As long as UGA, USC, and UF keep kicking the #%@#! out of their ACC rivals, the Tech record will exposed as a joke. (Pretty soon, the Mountain West will take the BCS berth from the ACC – THEN, we’ll find out how excited the Techsters are to win the conference, then head to Charlotte to play UConn or a team of that ilk.) Congrats to Tech for the Orange Bowl berth, but, let’s get real – since UGA beat USC earlier this year, that bowl should’ve been our’! Go Dawgs!

Sometimes the true hurts. But this is not one of those times.
First this program is not in trouble. The 2008 team never had the defense to go and win a NC. And it did not have the DC.
The 2009 never had the defense nor the offense to make a serious run at even the SEC East. And so the proper moves were made.
The Dawgs are probably two years away from challenging for a top SEC spot. I am a Dawg fan till the day I die. But I don’t cheer through rose colored glasses.
I see next year as a huge year for a strong offense. But the defense needs a consistent pass rush. And better secondary play. We also need a hell of lot better kick off and punt coverage.Kicking game is solid, its the kick coverage/and kick returning that needs strong improvement. Need to stop fumbling kicks and punts. Need to cover a damn kickoff for pete’s sake.
But in the end this team has won 7 games, when it could have easily lost another two or three.
Down year…yes . Worse Georgia team in a decade.
But Georgia will always get the top players in a state that rankings 4 in the nation in producing quality and quantity HS football players.
Richt has already proven that he can win with the talent. Even when his DC doesnt pass the grade.
Program in trouble.
I say Hogwash.

Georgia fans,
Yes, you beat Georgia Tech. We all know this. BUT, to hear some of you bash GT and its fans because of this is laughable.
If you honestly think that UGA had more successful season than GT then you are mistaken. Get your head examined. Quick. Now.
Georgia Tech is playing in a BCS Bowl.
Georgia is playing in Shreveport.
Georgia Tech finished 11-2, won the ACC, and is ranked #9.
Georgia finished 7-5, no where near the top of the SEC, and is not even close to being ranked.
Georgia Tech lost to Miami and Georgia.
Georgia lost to Tennessee, Kentucky, LSU, and Oklahoma State. (Yes, I know you’re going to say “THE SEC is soo GOODZ THOUGH!!!” but face that facts, Kentucky and Tennessee AREN’T good. Georgia Tech lost to one bad team (Georgia). It happens
Georgia Tech continued to IMPROVE from last year to this year under CPJ.
Georgia took a HUGE step back this year under Richt.
Fact it, GT is on way the up. Georgia is not. You can take your victory over us. But I would rather be playing in a BCS bowl than in…SHREVEPORT.
Last year, I wanted GT to beat UGA. After that, I had no motivation to even care about the bowl game versus LSU (and it’s safe to say neither did the players). This year, I didn’t necessarily care about the UGA/GT game. It meant nothing to GT. GT was going to be in the ACC Championship game with a shot to go to the BCS whether they beat UGA or not.
GT has had an extremely successful season. UGA has not. I will take our success and you can still cry over the fact that you beat us this year.
Merry Christmas.

Coach Johnson is a great coach and will continue to do a fine job for Tech.
As for Georgia, one off year does not equal a meltdown of the program.Georgia will be back.
Interesting…that you would say the Georgia/GT game meant nothing to you.
But if you are okay with losing this year, as well as 8 of the last 9 years…okay. This is one Georgia fan that can live with that kind of record against tech.
What is amusing is that this years TECH team reminds me of last years Georgia team. Strong offense, really poor defense.
Good luck in the Orange Bowl.

GTFann223,
Maybe the UGA game didn’t mean as much to YOU since it wasn’t a factor in whether GT goes to BCS but I bet it was important to most of GT.
Don’t think I’d agree that UGA took a hugh step backward at least relative to expectations coming into the season. I do think we’ll be better next year, at least on O and hoping that Reshad and Rennie return on D.
Anyway, good luck to GT in the bowl and next year until we meet at Sanford next year.

Great article Mark. On this Christmas eve remember that out of hardship across the baren waste land did Joesph and Mary travel to find a small town of Bethleham where our saviour was born.
Thus Richt and the boys travel to Shreveport and may a new attitude of hardnose winning football be born again at UGA.
Then will arrive 3 wise defensive coaches to lead us to the promised land. National Championship Baby!!!

GT FAN you sir are a spin doctor of the highest ability. The absolute worst team we have had in 10 years beats you on the same day as another mediocre SEC team throttles the other ACC championship game participant. A mediocre LSU waxes Tech in the bowl game. What does that tell you buzzy? If you played in the SEC you’d have a losing record and you’d be unranked. Bragging about winning the ACC chumpionship is akin to bragging about being the tallest midget. (OK, so I stole that line but it bears repeating) Tech is nothing. Keep sending people into space with technology learned from tricycle races (what’s up with all that crap?) and leave football to the big boys.
And another thing why does everyone think Erk Russell was so good? He had one good year. Because we had one good player…….on offense. Otherwise his tenure is similar to the Goff-Donnan era that people have called unacceptable.

When Sports Illistated did a story about violence in college football they asked Erk about a picture of 9 UGA players tackling a Clemson player..his reply..Where are my two other men! Who cares who your next DC is! It won’t be Kirby Smart and if it was, he is not that good. Alabama has much better players than UGA. You will not see an improvement on the defense regardless of who the coach is until you get better players. Yeah I know you have all these 4 and 5 star players. Yeah right. Tell that to some of the other teams offenses that pounded you unconscious. The 4 or 5 star is only on paper and is bogus. It doesn’t mean squat. Coach Johnson knows how to evaluate players and these recruiting agents don’t know squat but try to sell magazines. If you want to spend your hard earned money that you made at McDonalds go ahead and buy these recruting magazines. Even worse , believe them and bet your hard earned money from McDonalds on the games.

Twas’ the night before Christmas when all through Athens not a Dawg was stirring, not even a Cox. The 4th place trophy was hung by the chimney with care, in hopes and delusions a National Title would soon be there. The Dawgs were nestled all snug in their beds while visions of an Advocare Bowl danced through their heads. And Mark in his kerchief and Rennie in his doo rag had just settled for a Bowl nobody cares about. When out on the field there arose such a clatter, A.J sprang from his bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window he flew like a flash tore open the bed sheets and threw up his stash, the moon on the bench of a new fallen coach gave the lustre of Saturday afternoons to objects below, when what to his wondering eyes should appear, but a gigantic Gator and 8 Large defensive ends. With a dominating force so lively and quick, the Dawgs knew it must be St. Meyer.

Richt better hire the right d coordinator and get it together in 2010, or he can hit the road. Florida should be way down and UT will not have any talent coming back, so UGA should win the SEC east pretty easily with any coaching at all. If not, Damon Evans needs to send Richt and his staff packing and bring in championship quality coaches. I’m tired of annual blowout losses in big SEC games.

OK, so I missed the Papa John’s Bowl with South Carolina playing.
But if you READ my post, you’ll see that I’M ACTUALLY BASHING ANOTHER TECH FAN who keeps using the ‘$14M to $1.4M’ tag line. He keeps using this tag line but fails to realize the logistics of how bowl $$ gets paid out.
So with the Papa John’s Bowl added in, that makes 10 SEC teams in bowls and upwards of $20M MORE in payouts for the SEC than the ACC (with 7 teams playing in bowls).
So clearly you’re the TOOL … Can you dig it? Pay attention and learn how to take a compliment.

And here’s a newsflash: Tech’s defense is worse than Georgia’s. You guys better make a major coaching or talent upgrade on that side of the ball if you want the success to continue. You can’t outgun everyone.

“What the hell is so great about beating 6 teams who are NOT even in a bowl game ?
That is not a great year.
Neither too, is LOSING 24-30 for the 8th time in 9 years against Coach Richt.
The recruiting details prove beyond all doubt that UGA will continue to be MUCH BETTER than Tech.
And, would you lame butt Tech fans (both of you) please post some more about DEFENSE, which Tech has NOT had ANY of since Paul Johnson FIRED JON TENUTA and replaced him with the linebackers’ coach at So Miss as your “Defensive Coordinator.”
I did NOT say Tech has TOO MANY ASIAN MEN, what I said is the fact is that Tech has MORE ASIAN MEN than Tech has ALL WOMEN on campus.
FACT.
I don’t want to go to a school like that. Excuse me, going to college includes being with women, except at Georgia Tech.
Class ?
Now we are talking about Class in a Tech blog ?
Good Lord Above. Tech is renowned for the POOR LOSERS you are.
Tech students are not suffering from posts on their blogs giving it BACK to them, that which they sowed themselves pre-game.
Tech students are suffering all over campus, while your coach tells you to hit us in the face, instead it is the crime-ridden drug infested borders of your campus that causes Tech students so much suffering.
And your suffering continues as, your damn precious IMAGE, that somehow being Number 38 in the US News and World Report is something to BRAG about – while the fact is that Tech is WAY WORSE ACADEMICALLY in your student-athletes than at UGA according to the NCAA APR Academic Progress Rate. You recruit poor athletes mostly because you have NO WOMEN just Asian Men which you have MORE OF than WOMEN, so you have relaxed the enrollment and ACCEPT EVERYONE NOW.
ACC in bowl games ?
83-84-2.
And, if North Carolina doesn’t beat Pitt tomorrow, ACC will be 83-85-2 in bowl games.
If Boston College, does not beat Southern Cal tomorrow, the ACC will be 83-86-2.
And, if Clemson doesn’t beat Kentucky Sunday, the ACC will be 83-87-2 in bowl games. And, that then would make The SEC 191-149-9 in bowl games.
That’s laughable that you think we can NOT come back here and REPLY to this B.S.
The biggest culprit in the ACC of LOSING BOWL GAMES has been in fact, Georgia Tech who has LOST 7 OF THE LAST 10 TECH BOWL GAMES.
You are quoting the combined bowl records of ACC teams, in bowl games. Excuse me, the ACC gets NO DAMN CREDIT for winning a bowl game if the team in question was NOT IN THE STINKING ACC with a LOSING BOWL RECORD.
Paul Hewitt has a LOSING RECORD to UGA in men’s basketball. Paul Hewitt is on NCAA PROBATION with an Academic Progress Rate of 914. The NCAA has limited Paul Hewitt to only 11 scholarships in men’s basketball. The APR of Tech in men’s basketball is WAY WORSE than the APR of UGA in men’s basketball. Paul Hewitt is 4-5 vs. UGA in men’s basketball.
60-39-5 in Football is UGA’s record, with Coach Richt now 8-1 vs. Tech. including 30-24. Tech’s APR is WAY WORSE THAN UGA in football.
27-3 Women’s Basketball is UGA’s record against Georgia Tech including beating Tech “women” last week, as reported by me in here. Tech’s women’s basketball team has a WAY WORSE APR than UGA Academic Progress Rate.
21-10 Women’s Volleyball is UGA’s record against Tech in volleyball.
15-7 Softball is UGA’s record against Tech in Softball.
195-148-2 in Baseball is UGA’s record against Georgia Tech all-time in baseball, and this fact is listed at Georgia Tech’s own WebPages, why you don’t know that, is beyond me. And, NO, you LOST the last baseball game against UGA 5-7 at Turner Field.
25 NFL Georgia Tech yellowjackets 45 NFL UGA Bulldogs. So, NO, you are wrong about that too AMG. You just sit there and type whatever you want. Make it up, type away :

They will not be able to recruit the stars to keep that going. Ga wins big again in 2010 and wins the SEC east—bank on it!

Mark, one of your best articles. Right on the money.
Tech fans, Merry Christmas. Give your inferiority complexes a nice big holiday kiss for me. Collectively, you’re pathetic.
Mark my words: enjoy your excursion to Miami. Be safe, travel well, and revel whatever entertainment you can find in South Florida. Your one-year reprieve from the annual beat-down by the Dawgs has ended. This time next year, Georgia will have a new DC, the next Georgia win streak against Tech will be well under way, and the Dawgs will have returned to their traditional place among college football’s ranked elite. Meanwhile, despite Paul Johnson, Tech will still be Tech–and will be Tech minus Dwywer, Morgan, and Thomas. Good luck with that. Let’s see how well your defenseless team does when it loses its stars.

Here is my comment to all of you Bulldog fans who are lamenting over your trip to the Independence Bowl. All of the folks in Shrieveport LA who worked hard to have this event would just as soon have a team that is appreciative of their efforts rather than a bunch of crybabies. Just clam up, enjoy the game, beat A&M and then get better next year.

Bowl watchinng
Dec. 28 Independence Bowl UGA vs. Texas A&M. Traditionally one of the lower tiered bowls, the presence of the Dogs elevates the Independence for this year only. A “must see” for all Georgians, since the STATE CHAMPS will be in action. Even if you do not pull for the Dogs, watch and admire how WE RUN THIS STATE.
Insider Viewer Tips:
1. Check out the sideline shots of the Q-in-W (quarterback in waiting) and see Aaron Murray standing next to Coach Bobo.
2. Beginning at 7, during commercial breaks, surf over to Comcast Sports and get a peek at the UNBEATEN and TOP TEN ranked Lady Bulldogs of Coach Andy Landers. I would be remiss in not reminding everyone that the Lady Dogs have already earned the title of STATE CHAMPS by beating a gritty Top 25 Yellow Jacket squad recently.
3. Notice if Rashad Jones has come to play like he did in the Tech game. If so, he has begun his “NFL Salary Drive” and is as good as gone.
Jan. 5 Orange Bowl Georgia Tech vs. Iowa Although not being played in the primetime window of Dec. 28 through Jan. 1, check this game out if you have time. As you know the Jackets triple-optioned their way to the ACC championship.
Inside Viewer Tips:
1. Keep an eye on Tech’s fine wide receiver. Think about how someone with the nickname of “Bay Bay” will be razzed in an NFL training camp this summer.
2. Watch for Josh Nesbitt’s precision 5 step drops when Tech goes to the air… Sorry, I’m thinking about the Dogs Pro-style offense. Anyway Nesbitt is an outstanding competitor and great athlete worth viewing.
3. Observe Jon Dwyer as he runs the pig in his last game as a Jacket, and think about how he would do with a lead blocker like Shaun Chapas. Could he “RUN THE STATE” under those circumstances?
4. Compare the effectiveness of a 270 pound Rocket Scientist at center for Tech as opposed to Iowa’s 300+ roadgrader. I admire Bedford’s smarts, but will have to go with the cornfed Iowa farmboy.

A history lesson
December 25th, 2009
10:00 am
Usually, over 8 or 10 years, tech defeats UGA twice in a row or 3 times like with J Donnan and then they lose for years and years vs UGA. As lousy as UGA is this year, we physically handled tech at home and that broke tech’s sad little” tradition” of two wins in a row vs UGA. That makes me laugh. I can still see that stupid look on CPJ’s fat face as Waushauna and Caleb ( only very average SEC backs ) galloped past him. HAHAHAHAHA
Nesbitt and Dwyer combined for what/ 75 yard??? HAHAHAHAHAHA
That also says how pathetic Tech is to brag about the Orange Bowl trip. Second major bowl since I graduated from high school in 1967. I saw the last tech trip to the Orange in 67 and they lost to Florida.
Two majors in 42 years. LOL 30-24 and 1-8 and 4-15 and Taliban students. HAHAHAHAHA
Remember: Rontavious Wooten did drop a TD pass in full stride at the 40. It hit him in his hands and that pass would have blown it open. The 4th qtr Tech drop proves nada. Next play, Johnny Unitas Nesbitt could have tossed a pic 6 to UGA’s average to lousy safety Jones. HAHAHAHA

All of UGA’s detractors ( that are NOT even college grads or who have never attended a college class beyond a JC ) are in F-E-A-R and they know with UGA’s offense next year coupled with a solid D co ordinator, will be bringing havoc. They know that UGA’s team this year was really one with two or three losses that could have been avoided with even average D coaches and now, the CWM days are over. FEAR is setting in nicely. Look around the SEC and who has the returning talent like UGA and with one more big time R back this incoming class we will dominate.

1. Check out the sideline shots of the Q-in-W (quarterback in waiting) and see Aaron Murray standing next to Coach Bobo.
Since Bobo has moved to the sideline to coach Murray, Met and Logan were all sending in siginals. I agree that Murrary has the inside track, however it’s better to see these QB’s actually involved w/ the flow of the game, rather than just standing on the sidelines wearing a ball cap and having Bobo up in the box. Good move on Bobo’s part, because he could settle down a wild eyed QB and coach him face to face.

Not gonna happen. The dawgs got lucky when they intentionally injured nesbitt.
Iowa will be grasping air with their heavy leaded players who have gained five pounds of winter fat.
Nothing is more funnier than watching defenders looking around expecting to be blocked by an out of sight tech player, to spring one of the backs.
You know you have a great coach and offense, when the coah doesn’t need a script. He just shows up and calls the game.
FYI UGA will be mediocre for the next five years. Richt had his chance then Miles,Meyer, Saban, Kiffin, Chizek, and CPJ, showed up.
He was winning against inferior coaches and guess what he is now out of his league. He is so confused he decided to go along with the idiot dawg nation and fire Willie Martinez.
Richt is the problem not Martinez. He just isn’t a great coach.

thanks Yankeedawg, you’re a genius. Maybe GA should hire you as their next DC.
It’s simply about execution. If Iowa’s D executes (meaning GT’s O didn’t) they will hold GT in check. And does that automatically mean GT’s D doesn’t execute vs. Iowa’s O? But if GT’s O executes, what chance to you give Iowa then?
Funny how most GA fans think Iowa is the only team capable of EXECUTING on Jan. 5.
That’s why you play the games ….
In 2008 GT won in Athens when 99% of belief was that they wouldn’t. The exact opposite happened in 2009 in Atlanta; and GA fans, don’t try and say now that you were sure of victory before 11/28, simply ain’t true. And to assume GT won’t win vs GA for a LONG time from here forward is about a ignorant as saying Josh Nesbitt will be the #1 overall pick when leaves GT.

GT has had a bad D this year too GA fans, but so far were able to win 11. Hopefully they’ll win their 12th over Iowa. Yes, I see nowhere to go but up for both GA & GT’s D in 2010.
This GT fan sees the silver lining in the loss to GA …. it took GA’s best rushing effort in the Richt era to win the game. I’ve seen GT’s D play consecutive bad games vs. GA under PJ (2008 Stafford, 407 yds 5tds, MoMass 180+yds 3tds – both players’ career high), yet the Jackets are 1-1 in those games. I don’t see GT pulling a “Gailey” (i.e. lose on the scoreboard despite playing great D) with PJ at the helm. That’s something dogs fans don’t want to admit, but know it’s a fact.
GT’s D was worse in 2009 than 2008, but has to this point won 11 vs 9. GT doesn’t have to have great D effort to win, but when it gets one (UNC, VT, VA, Duke) there’s virtually no chance for the opponent.

I have heard some people say not to expect a big change on defense next year, that it will take time. I disagree. I believe the talent is there, but the scheme was awful for the most part. Put the players in position to make plays. It amazed me how when uga would blitz good things would happen, the problem is uga would only do that about 2 games a year and this year coverage was so awful that all the qb had to do was look up. Now that’s gone though.
Although I’m not always the biggest fan of Bobo, I think this year’s lack of offensive performance was because of pitiful oline play (other then against tech) and a dumb 5th year qb. If uga ever was third and one I knew that they couldn’t hand the ball off and get a first down, it wasn’t going to happen. The Dline would have so much penetration that the rb wouldn’t have a chance. I still don’t understand why bobo refused to qb sneak when he just needed one yard, but I guess he was scared of hurting cox’s “sore shoulder” he was nursing all season.

I am not sure if anyone has posted this yet, but it looks like Willie Martinez is going to be hired by the Gators…no, not as DC but as either LB or DB coach with Chuch Heater becoming the DC at Florida (on staf as the DB coach). Meyer likes Martinez LB coaching ability, but really likes his ablity to recruit south Florida the most (he is from the area). Looks like Georgia’s “loss” is Florida’s gain. Say what you want about his ability as DC (I also think he was overmatched there), but he is an excellent position coach on D and is a great recruiter. This will be a big pick up on the coaching staff for the Gators.

I have said from day one that Coach Martinez and Coach Fabris were good football coaches and recruiters. I heard that Coach Fabris may be going to Louisville. The whole problem at Georgia started when we let the whole team go out on the field against Florida. It may have helped win that ball game or not. I really believe what won that game was the rushing attack by Moreno. I know what it led to. All the dancing and penalties. If we don’t get the discipline back and kids that play with alot of pride it doesn’t matter who the assistant coaches are.

Usually the fans that criticize the players on a public forum are bandwagon jumpers. You see it at all levels and in all sports. They will not stick with their school during the bad times other than bashing them. Plus they know very little about what it is like to compete as many of them wouldn’t know how to put a jock strap on, unless mommy put it on. Give me the knowlegeable fan that may get frustrated but makes sound judgments or acts like he has won and been there before. Go Dawgs!

looking at the ajc.com vote thing about with the right DC, what can UGA do next year. . . most say win the SEC East. Understandable maybe, with Florida losing everything and Tenn still not great. But, when is the last time Florida hasn’t been good? And Tenn handled us pretty good this year, even when down (that game sucked the most). Also, S. Carolina started clicking (finally) this past year. I think the SEC east will be the most up for grabs it has been in a long time.
With that said, how is a DC going to come in and turn everything around automatically? First, one of the biggest problems for the Def this year were the turnovers on our own side of the field. A defense just isn’t going to consistently stop a team from scoring with that field position. Second, what players on the defensive side of the ball are game changers? I don’t think we had one. not ONE. R Jones had a great game against tech. The soph DE Houston seemed to have a pretty good year, and is one to watch next year. Rennie C was dependable, but doesn’t change games. I think the talent level on that side of the ball is down. If you can’t get pressure with your front four, without blitzing, you’re in trouble, and we normally couldn’t.

Had my family over for Christmas, 26 of us all together, and since many of them, well actually most of them are Ga fans, you can imagine how my day went. They did admire my Ga sweatshirt that I will have to wear at all family events this year as I did the many jacket shirts that they wore last year.
However the discussions about the state of the Ga program next year seems to mirror your concerns. The majority of them think that next year can be a good year, but it will be one more year before they think both sides of the ball will be able to contend for an SEC title.

What a load of hogwash. tek played 6 games against teams NOT EVEN IN A BOWL GAME. The ACC had to give away your bowl games because you did not even have enough teams to even play in a bowl game. ACC is 83-84-2 in bowl games, all-time; this is a horrible bowl record. None of the BCS conferences lost a single game to any 1-AA team, except the ACC who LOST to TWO (2) 1-A teams. The ACC is 9-11 against the other conferences in the BCS; that sucks. The SEC was not 2 games under but 6 games over against all the other BCS Conferences, and this includes Georgia Tech scheduling the ONLY TWO SEC TEAMS not in a Bowl Game. ACC is 18-16 against all 1-A teams, while The SEC is 31-6. The only 2 games the ACC won against The SEC this year were the 2 games played by the top ACC team against the ONLY TWO SEC TEAMS not in a bowl game at all. How pitiful is that ? The average ranking in the BCS by the ACC is 51, while the Average BCS Ranking of all 12 SEC teams is 35. Clearly, attempting to compare the ACC with The SEC is folly beyond all reason. tek has beat UGA 1 time in the last 9 games, and it a total fluke; and LOST 8 times being DOMINATED overall 8 of the last 9 games. And, you come running in here bragging how you will BEAT UGA next year. Excuse me, you said that before this year’s game too. And, then, after the game refused to log in with the same handle and take your medicine. tek fans are the world worst poor sports and always have been. Don’t sit there and think you can compare the ACC with The SEC and get away with it. I swear to God.

Why do tek fans want to talk about 1 of several Heisman Trophy Winners we have at UGA, when tek has NEVER ever won even 1 Heisman Trophy ?
I loved it this year with the tek fans (both of them) hyping Josh Nesbitt for Heisman Trophy. The guy has thrown 12 td passes and 11 interceptions total in his 38 games as your “qb.”
This is punctuated by his LAST 4 PLAYS OF THE GAME against UGA, which is why we BEAT Tech 30-24.

The ACC is a group of itty bitty teeny weenie small colleges spread out way too far from Boston to Miami, who NONE OF THEM are any good. It takes over 24 hours to get from Boston to Miami. It’s over 1,500 miles. I said this here when the conference was created. That it is spread out too far, that the colleges are small insignificant football schools who will do NOTHING in football, with NO ONE WATCHING.
In the previous 5 years, the Average HIGHEST RANKED ACC Team is Number 12 in the Final AP Poll.
There is NOT an ACC team considered ANY GOOD AT ALL.
No one attends any of the games, and on TV, they are the worst rated games in all of America.
The ACC LOSES its bowl games.
The ACC LOSES to 1-AA teams.
The ACC LOSES head-to-head against EVERY CONFERENCE.
The ACC averages the WORST Average BCS Ranking of all Conferences.
The ACC recruits the worst of all conferences.
The ACC has the worst attendance of all conferences.
There is NOT an ACC team considered ANY GOOD AT ALL.

1. SEC
5-year bowl record: 25-13 overall, 6-2 BCS
Projected 2009 bowl record: 8-2
* ALABAMA over Texas (BCS championship)
* FLORIDA over Cincinnati (Sugar)
* LSU over Penn State (Capital One)
* Northwestern over AUBURN (Outback)
* OLE MISS over Oklahoma State (Cotton)
* Virginia Tech over TENNESSEE (Chick-fil-A)
* GEORGIA over Texas A&M (Independence)
* ARKANSAS over East Carolina (Liberty)
* KENTUCKY over Clemson (Music City)
* SOUTH CAROLINA over Connecticut (Papajohns.com)
Spotlight game: Kentucky has its best defense under coach Rich Brooks and will control the Clemson running game (see: C.J. Spiller) to force erratic QB Kyle Parker to win the game.
Here comes trouble: How about Auburn facing this combination? Northwestern’s defense forced 26 turnovers, and its offense has a fifth-year senior quarterback (Mike Kafka) who runs the spread better than anyone in the Big Ten.
The last word: The nation’s best conference could win all 10 bowls and will only get better next season. Deep, young rosters are the norm for the league’s 10 bowl teams, and the conference could return nine starting quarterbacks.
5. ACC
5-year bowl record: 18-22 overall, 1-4 BCS
Projected 2009 bowl record: 3-4
* Iowa over GEORGIA TECH (Orange)
* West Virginia over FLORIDA STATE (Gator)
* Pitt over NORTH CAROLINA (Meineke Car Care)
* VIRGINIA TECH over Tennessee (Chick-fil-A)
* MIAMI over Wisconsin (Champs Sports)
* Kentucky over CLEMSON (Music City)
* BOSTON COLLEGE over USC (Emerald)
Spotlight game: From Heisman Trophy candidate in the first month of the season to struggling to find a groove, Miami QB Jacory Harris has three weeks to prepare for a shaky Wisconsin pass defense.
Here comes trouble: Georgia Tech’s triple option offense has taken over the ACC. One problem: Iowa’s strong interior line, led by DTs Karl Klug and Christian Ballard, can blow up the option dive play.
The last word: No matter the strides of other programs, the ACC is desperate for Miami and FSU to return to the elite. Another disappointing bowl season won’t make another year of transition any easier to take

Indicted, i think 3 of those games go differently.
Auburn should beat Northwestern.
I think OSU has a shot to beat Ole Miss. . . Ole miss should just give it to that back 25 times.
I think Tenn/Va tech will be a close one.
I think Clemson beats Kentucky.
Of course, i hope the SEC wins every one of them.
I think the ACC could have a better bowl season than usual. I don’t see USC losing to Boston College, but then again, USC doesn’t want to be there at all. And if Tech loses to Iowa, I will be shocked. But it does happen, it will prove one thing. There might not be another team in the entire nation that would benefit more from a college football playoff.

“I believe Ga. Tech has over 7K tickets still remaining for the Orange Bowl out of their 17,500 allotment. How could this be?”
I really miss the days when you could sit on your A$$ on New Year’s day and watch the “Big 4″ bowl games all in one day
_____________________________________________________
For what it’s worth, a lot of schools have trouble selling out their tickets. But that doesn’t mean fans from the schools aren’t buying them. It is cheaper to buy tickets through other sources than directly from a school’s athletic department most of the time. It would see those tickets would be the LAST to be sold since there is no way of discounting them at all.
