Worst thing I saw all year? This Vazquez-Cabrera trade!

I guess it’s not a bad a year when it takes until Dec. 22 to happen across something really awful. And that was our lot in Atlanta sports. Even with Willie Martinez and Dave Wommack misdirecting defenses; even with Jason Elam developing a case of the yips; even with Greg Norton whiffing and Paul Hewitt wrangling timeouts … even then, it took until the penultimate week of the calendar year to find something that made you throw a shoe at yonder wall.

And here it is, and here goes said shoe.

Javier Vazquez for Melky Cabrera. The Braves’ best pitcher for the Yankees’ eighth- or ninth-best player. The anchor of a good rotation for a guy who isn’t really a big bopper.

I’ll have more to say on this later and at greater length, but for now I leave you with these words:

Frank Wren = Epic Fail.

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire,
as are Vomit and ol’ Jock Strap,
Jeff Schultz tanning pool side near downtown Cabo,
and Matt Ryan is doing his best to learn how to rap.

Everybody knows a turkey and his traveling dog show
Help to make the jail cell his rite,
Clandestine Falcons Fans unconcealed,
as Arthur’s jester commands the slight.

They know that Dimitroff’s on the way,
he’s got Smith leading the Birds of Prey,
And every real Falcons Fan in town,
Knows we are 2011 Super Bowl bound.

And so we’ve got two more games to go,
lets kick some Bills and Buccaneer ass,
Jeff already said 9 and 7 is what we’ll sow,
Thank you Falcons Players and Brass!

Bold prediction about the GT bball team, Mark. I hope you’re right.

Will Tiger show up at Augusta?
I say he will. Majors are too important to miss.Where he shows up prior to then is the debate.

I think Sonny Clusters needs a storyline. Like “Will Sonny Clusters continue to dazzle message boards with his wit and insight on Dairy Queen and Mr. Met and state championships past?”

I agree with the first 4. I just don’t know what would make you think #5 will come true. This team is no more talented than the 2007 team, which barely got into the tournament and lost in the first round. The difference in the first 5 years of the Hewitt era and the 4 years since are the assistants Deane Keener and Cliff Warren. But I would love to be wrong.

Merry Christmas, Mark and everyone.

I’m betting on Tech’s talent in basketball. And, as exasperated as I often get with Paul Hewitt, he’s obviously a very bright man. I just don’t understand why he doesn’t win more games. But maybe he will in 2010.

No way GT goes that far in the Tourney. They don’t have the coach that can put all of the great pieces of the team together. They bring in bigtime one and done recruits who are on their victory lap to the Draft and have no incentive to learn an offense or defense because they know they’ll be gone next season.

As long as Woodson is around, the Hawks will be one and done in the playoffs, Mark you could coach the Hawks to the playoffs with the talent they have on that roster. You know I’m right!

It has played itself out

Do not care what a contract states, no judge in a court of law would say that GT bb coach should be paid out millions when the numbers are disgraceful..Follow Kentucky’s lead and refuse to pay it if this season continues the same way as the last several..any arbitration would go in GT’s favor.

I’ll ghive this argument up soon but I think Peacock’s heroics deserve comment in the FSU game if we can put aside our Hewitt hate for a moment.
That is what the one and done players are missing.
Many of the one and doners will never develop that condifence to step up when the rest of the team has taken a step back.
I thought that was worth the price of admission for a night anyway.

Mark, even if the Dawgs get a top coordinator, they have to break in a new QB and Spurrier has the Gamecocks playing good on both sides on the ball with an experienced QB ready to roll for next year.

Ga Tech go far in the Big Dance. Not as long as Hewitt is around. I’ve suffered through season after season watching this guy jump up and down on the sidelines flashing fingers. When did constantly shuffling players in and out become a coaching style? With this guy at the helm maybe 5th or 6th in the ACC. All the talent in the world won’t help this clown. He’ll just mismanage it.

God Bless You Mark
Thanks for keeping us informed and entertained

I don’t care if Paul Hewitt wins the national championship this year…he needs to be canned. We have more talent than all but 2 teams in the ACC(duke and UNC) but we cant even compete with Miami, UVA, and FSU!?!? One good to great year every 5-6 years is unacceptable at what was once an “upper level” ACC basketball school. Anyone we hire will be able to recruit well….lets just bite the bullet and spend the money. If they can hire a decent coach….he will win instantly with the massive amount of talent that Hewitt leaves….even with Favors and Lawal gone. I miss going to the thriller dome…and knowing we can compete with the UNCs and Dukes of the world…its time for a change.

1. No. The Hawks franchise will find a way to love in one of the first two rounds.
2. No. He won’t sign with Atlanta no matter the price.
3. No. A step up from the Orange would be the BCS game, and I don’t see an ACC champion making it any time soon.
4. Yes and Yes. The first answer is obvious, and due to the statistics of WM’s defenses, the second answer is just as obvious.
5. No. The Jackets don’t make it to the Sweet 16.

And the other unmentionables…

6. The Braves’ bats consist of one all-star in McCann and a soon-to-be 38-year-old future Hall of Famer. They will be lucky to be a .500 ballclub with that lineup.
7. The Falcons will not finish above .500 on Jan 3rd. Too many injuries…
