Santa Claus will be comin' to town soon enough. Will the Eastern Conference finals follow? (AJC photo by Curtis Compton)

Santa Claus will be comin' to town soon enough. Will the Eastern Conference finals follow? (AJC photo by Curtis Compton)

1. Will the Hawks reach the Eastern Conference finals? Step by inexorable step, this team keeps moving. It made the playoffs in 2008 and won a series in 2009. Can it do what the Hawks haven’t done since 1970 — when they were based in the West, not the East, and you needed only one series victory fo reach the conference finals — and play for the right to go to the NBA finals? Bradley’s prediction: Yes, they can. Yes, they will.

2. Will Ilya Kovalchuk re-up with the Thrashers? This isn’t so much about a player as it is a franchise. The Thrashers have made a bright start to the season, but all that goes poof if Kovalchuk won’t agree to stay. It has been a decade-long struggle to sell hockey in this Southern city, but if the franchise player leaves, will the franchise itself be long for the A-T-L? Bradley’s prediction: Kovalchuk stays, simply because Don Waddell has to pay him whatever it takes.

3. Will Georgia Tech qualify for a bowl ever better than the Orange? Here’s another story of progress: The Jackets were 9-4 in Year 1 under Paul Johnson and went 11-2 and won the ACC championship in Year 2. The Ramblin’ Wreck,  alas, figures to hit a speed bump. At least two juniors — defensive end Derrick Morgan and B-back Jonathan Dwyer — are apt to leave in the NFL draft, and receiver Demaryius Thomas could join the exodus. And Tech’s defense is at least a year away from anything bigger than a league title. Bradley’s prediction: Tech goes 9-3 and doesn’t win the ACC.

4. Will Georgia ever hire a defensive coordinator, and will he improve on what we’ve just seen? The search now figures to last into the new year, and that’s not necessarily bad news. (No matter how halting the early returns have been.) There’s still a chance Georgia can make a big run at former Bulldog Kirby Smart, who’s coordinating Alabama’s D at the moment, and that would be a significant upgrade. Then again, just about anybody would be. Bradley’s prediction: Georgia hires a big name and sees results immediately.

5. Can Paul Hewitt take Tech on another long NCAA run? It hasn’t happened since 2004, when Hewitt took the Jackets to the NCAA title game, and another big season is long overdue. The deflating loss to Florida State in the ACC opener aside, there’s enough time and resources for something good to happen. And Hewitt, to be frank, needs something good to happen. Bradley’s prediction: The Jackets qualify for the Big Dance as a No. 5 seed and play into the second week, losing in a regional final.

Now what, you’re asking about the Falcons? Well, the biggest story regarding them figures to be decided by Jan. 3, 2010, when we’ll know for sure if the forever-sought consecutive winning seasons have been attained. And the Braves? Well, after the events of today — Javier Vazquez for Melky Cabrera — we might be doomed to another summer of flailing.

Something is wrong here. We was wondering how things got messed up? Ol’ Jeff may have rigged some things to mess up while he’s in LA with the gang.

Melky can be like Jeff and have some fans dressed up like milk cartons instead of like franks (we told Jeff they was hot dogs but he said they was franks).

Cant believe we traded my favorite Braves pitcher to watch! This makes me dislike Lowe and Wren even more!!
And i see GT being a sweet 16 caliber team, (with a Final 4 roster!) due to lack of great assistant coaches on the bench. Not bringing back Keener was a BIG mistake!

“Will Georgia and Georgia Tech fans realize all this smack talk is like cousins arguing at Thanksgiving dinner”?
For me, IT’S EXACTLY LIKE COUSINS ARGUING AT THANKSGIVING DINNER. I ABSOLUTELY HATE ONE SET OF FIRST COUSINS (OBNOXIOS DOG FANS) AND ABSOLUTELY HATE SPENDING THE HOLIDAYS WITH THEM. However, for a lot of the dog nation, it’s also about getting put in their place by Tech then subsequently taking it out on their cousins which in a lot of cases is also their spouse.

This may sound petty – but the prospect of hearing Chip Caray say “Melky” something like 162×4 = 600+ times, some of them while the camera zooms in on the blank, soul-emptying stare of LaRoche, with CJ writing his initials with expectorated tobacco juice, fills me with existential horror.

the yankee’s had a loaded line-up and didn’t need another bat, which is why Melky played so much for them. So we not only lost one of our best pictures we are stuck with even less offense. What a stupid senseless move.

Bradly, What about the Atlanta Dream? They might be more compelling than the Braves going forward…unless Heyward makes the opening day roster. Of course what could go wrong with ushering in a ‘can’t miss’ rookie ‘phenom’ in the outfield and depending on them to help the anemic offense. That can only end good, right?

Any Dawgs in Denial in the house today who say they won the National Title in 2007? Here is a history lesson :

2007 – Tennessee 35 Georgia 14

Tennessee finished the regular season with a 9-3 overall record and a 6-2 record in the SEC Eastern division. They tied with Georgia as champions of the SEC East, however, by virtue of a head-to-head victory over Georgia, the Volunteers were the SEC East representatives in the Championship Game.

GT Brill: Here’s why you get the New Orleans Station..can’t say why you don’t get the local. I did copy paste this because it says it way better than I could have..

Medium wave and short wave radio signals act differently during daytime and nighttime. During the day, AM signals travel by groundwave, diffracting around the curve of the earth over a distance up to a few hundred miles (or kilometers) from the signal transmitter. However, after sunset, changes in the ionosphere cause AM signals to travel by skywave, enabling AM radio stations to be heard much farther from their point of origin than is normal during the day. This phenomenon can be easily observed by scanning an AM radio dial at night.

StraightJacket

December 22nd, 2009

Mark, GT will be better next year, especially on defense. The redshirts will be available and the injured starters will be back. Despite young players on the DL, the GT DL will be better … because the players next season will be better. The offense will be equal as the OL will improve to compensate for any potential departures – including Dwyer & Thomas. We won’t exactly have “chumps” replacing those guys either, and with 85 scholarships on board for the first time in ages, DEPTH will begin to emerge.
Special teams will be about the same, or slightly improved.
Does all this mean that GT will be contenders for another ACC Title? Perhaps, but next year will be tough. The road schedule is brutal: Kansas, VPI&SU, Clemson, UNC, UGAG, and Wake.
Even though the team will be better, the record may not be.
10 wins sounds about right; any Championship for GT in 2010 will be a “bonus”, given that schedule.

1. The hawks are playing as well as anybody, but they would have to go through boston, cleveland, or orlando to advance to the eastern conference finals. I don’t think they have the bench depth that these other teams have to do so. It is possible to make the run to the championship game, but not likely.

2. If the thrashers don’t keep Kovalchuk, they can kiss their hockey team goodbye and wish them well in canada. The thrashers are having trouble filling the stands with one of the best players in the nhl right now. If he leaves, so does the franchise.

3. As a Tech fan, I would love to see us get to a better bowl. However, because of the ACC tie in with the Orange Bowl, the only bowl that would be better is the MNC. I would love to see us there, but it’s going to be difficult to go undefeated with our defense. I can see us back in the Orange Bowl next year and eventually getting to a MNC, but not next season.

4. Unless cmr is going to run the defense, I would say they sign a dc sometime before spring practice. Who is anybody’s guess.

5. Hewitt needs to go if Tech doesn’t get to at least the Sweet 16. When our Full Court Press is the best thing about Hewitt coached teams, you know something is wrong. The only thing our offense is consistent at, is being inconsistent. We rely way too heavily on outside shooting and more often than not, it doesn’t pan out. When you have two stud big men on your team, Lawal and Favors, you need to feed them the ball as much as possible.

Im a college football fan, but i just don’t get the people that are OBSESSED with it, and have it as their #1 sport. NFL, MLB, NHL, NBA, MMA, College Basketball…… ALL rank higher in “sports” because they all have a REAL CHAMPION!

You kids really need to move on to the BIG BOY sports and let the college presidents have their little “pagent” that they call a sport. (maybe things would change if you fools boycotted going to the meaningless bowls!)

Any team where your team can go undefeated, and still have NO shot at a national title… Is NOT A SPORT! Its closer to a dog pagent ud see on animal planet! Watch as all the pretty little teams prance infront of the judges… meanwhile.. in the REAL sports… we fight it out like MEN to declare a Champion!
Go Braves, Hawks, Falcons, GT Hoops, Fedor…….. meanwhile all the kids bicker like little girls about a sport that dosent care near as much about them… as they care about it!
Your bickering is really getting old on these blogs. If only yall put that much effort into boycotting the sport and demanding change.. .maybe your sport could again become relevant!

What you’ll have Straightjacket is the chum associated with #49 and #52 recruiting classes. You still have a lack of talent, depth, coaching and size on your defense. Your offensive line will always be overmatched size wise against good defenses and from the looks of your last 2 classes and this years commits that won’t change. GT is at the apex of the Johnson era right now.

When Chan’s talent is gone Tech has huge problems. Paul Johnson hasn’t proven he can even beat 5 loss SEC teams with with regularity even with Chan’s top 10 class. It’s downhill next year for GT and it will get progressively worse. By year 5 Pau Johnson will be about as popular as Chan Gailey. If you wanted a coach for the long haul you should have hired June Jones. When PJ leaves or is fired some poor guy is going to have to try to win with Johnson’s chum. It’ll take 10 years to undue the ultimate damage that Paul Johnson will do.

Agree that GT will finish 9-3 or better, but if we do lose one of those will not be in Athens.

Ugag will return for a victory lap in Shreveport – hard to have a great year breaking in a new quarterback. That qb race will be interesting. Also I think Kirby Smart will return to Athens.

Atlanta Jacket dream on. All a QB has to do to beat GT is keep handing the ball to a running back. GT is screwed next year. You will fall ever farther behind the FSUs and UGA of the world talent wise. Your vaunted TO could only get a little over 200 yds against a Willie D. That TO will hit the wall sooner than later. Answers:

#1 – No, the Hawks will die in the second half of the season. Losers.

#2 – No, Kovalchuk is gone from Atlanta, and hockey die again. This just isn’t a big hockey city.

#3 – Maybe., but Tech has to get serious about recruiting and coaching defensive players before anything good is going to happen.

#4 – UGA will not be able to get any big-name defensive coordinator. Who in their right mind would pick up and move to Athens to coach goons and thugs?

#5 – No, no, no. Hewitt is a lousy excuse for a coach. He had one big year, and he’s been milking it ever since. The man has more excuses than Barack Obama. Get this guy out the door now before he runs Tech basketball completely into the ground.

One more appropriate comment: S-H-R-E-V-E-P-O-R-T. Thet actually have a bowl game there? Oh, that’s too funny.

You gaggers should get acquainted with Shreveport because you will be back there next year unless you luck up and make it to Nashville. Yes you beat GT this year – one cheap lick to the qb and our bad defense gave you a win. Trust me and count on it GT beats the gaggers by 14 or more next November. New DC or not you have a qb to break in and you know that “SEC Speed” will probably be a bit much for him. Go Aggies and Hook’em Horns!

I am glad this is free. HOCKEY. Big story?

Hawks big story? Yeah, I saw more blue seats than people on highlights at Phillips. Hawks, Braves, Tech, and Falcons take a back seat to UGA and HS football in this state. AJC should have figured that out a long time ago and they wouldn’t be nearing OUT OF PRINT!

Shreveport hosted both Oklahoma and Alabama before they made triumphant returns to BCS bowl games. Every team must have a reloading year. I don’t know what game you watched Thanksgiving weekend but please keep in mind that Georgia did not play with AJ GREEN! As for our QB, just wait and see what Aaron Murray has, he was true frosh and is going to be a stud. Just ask Urban Meyer who is wishing he was in his backfield. By the way, 30 – 24, no Green, no Rambo, no QB, no problem. WE RUN THIS STATE.

Top Story of 2010, what if UGA and TECH switched schedules in 09?

December 22nd, 2009
11:13 pm

If UGA had played TECH’s schedule… hmm. Let’s just see.

Jacksonville State- laugher
Clemson- well we beat the team that beat Clemson. Dawgs win.
@ Miami- I will give this to the Canes, but not a blowout.
North Carolina- this ain’t basketball boys.
@Mississippi State- I will take our Dawgs, we own Miss St.
@ Florida State- laugher. States defense was worse than ours. Dawgs win.
Virginia Tech- I will give this to Tech, although we might have beaten them.
@Virginia- laugher
@Vandy- we whipped them at Vandy.
Wake Forest- laugher.
@Duke- laugher.
vs. Georgia- well lets just say it is a toss up, which Dawg team shows up.

Now, I will give you the two losses but doubt that would have happened. Now, lets see Tech playing UGA’s schedule.

@Ok State- Dez Bryant vs that secondary, in that environment. I will take OK State
South Carolina- toss up, but So. Car. destroyed Clemson who you struggled with.
@Arkansas- hmmmmmm. Toss up.
LSU- SEE THE CHIC FIL A BOWL. laugher. Tigers Roll.
@ Tennessee- Vols roll.
@Vandy- Tech destroyed them.
@Florida- Gators in a laugher.
Tenn Tech- Tech in a laugher. The Georgia version I mean.
Auburn- toss up, I will give Tech a victory.
Kentucky- we can wait to see what the bowl vs Clemson shows. Give Tech a victory.

Analyzing Tech vs. UGA’s schedule I would say Tech might have won 4 games. Tech is the most overrated, one dimensional team, playing in the weakest conference in the country. Wait till the bowl games, every team in the ACC will lose. Miami might squeak out a win.

UGA most profitable football program over last 5 years.

December 22nd, 2009
11:22 pm

According to Forbes magazine’s most valuable football programs: the lowest we have dropped since 2005 is 3rd behind Notre Dame and Texas. I think we can afford not to play in Orange Bowl. The SEC shares bowl revenues, last I checked we had 2 teams in BCS and we have the largest Media deal in history. DAWG nation will rise. Kirby will get his million, Defense will get freaking nasty. Offense will roll. No Tebow, No Spikes, No just about entire team. We drop LSU and get Miss St. Boy 2010 is the year of the DAWG. Colorado is going to be a laugher.

14 million? Maybe you can give the homeless on North Ave. tix to your games.

December 22nd, 2009

Maybe then we can get a decent camera angle when TECH is on TV. ESPN’s camera crew works so hard to not show the top half of the empty stadium.

Glad that CPJ finally gets this is rival game with the delusional. I can say with confidence thhis is the last year we will have to listen to this gagger crap for sometime. And NO you are not going to a BCS with a Freshman QB – you are dumber than you look if you believe that. Just checkout how well that worked out for USC this year. Enjoy the trip to Shreveport – take notes for friends because you will most likely be back next year. SEC East losses – UF a given, UT they whipped you with a first year coach. Toss ups – KY & USC , Wins – Vandy. Not sure who you play in the west – Arkansas a win and Auburn a toss up. Sisters of the poor a win and GT a loss.

Uga will have at least 3-5 losses next year. 2011 you will be better, but you are high if you expect anything better than than 7-5 to 9-3 next year.

These bandwagon nats will have a http://www.firepauljohnson.com up after next season. With the hire of a top DC at UGA, fat Paul’s doesn’t have a snowball’s chance in hell of beating UGA with that offense and defense. TO my azz. Dwyer 33 yds…Nesbitt 41 yds. And that was against Willie Martinez. LMAO!

$65 Million in Bowl Winnings for Georgia

Congrats to Mark Richt for earning more Bowl winnings than any SEC team. Another Georgia #1. $65 million in BowL winnings–great job Coach Richt. Love the new stadium upgrades, and having the money to get 3 new top defensive coaches. Tremendous job earning that $65 million. Georgia has no SEC peers in Bowl Earnings. $65 Million strong—#1 in the SEC.

Tired of Tech

December 23rd, 2009
2:44 pm

As a Georgia grad even I’d like to punch that youtube guy. But I’ll tell you who won’t, a techie. Well they might slap him but even then they’ll break a few fingers. I loved it when PJ said to punch any Georgia fan talking smack about the game, that was hiliarious, too comical. I liken GT’s very recent success to people with new money. Hey everything’s great because, well, we’ve never had this before, and we’re gonna go out and buy everything and run our mouths like we’ve been here all along. Problem is you haven’t. You don’t know how to recognize a gimmikie offense that works because people have seen it since 1927 (with a brief resurrection in the late 80’s). PJ stays at each school about as long as it takes for other teams to dust off the old playbooks they find behind the leather helmets. For people who know what football in the 21st century looks like, PJ’s got about 1 or 2 more decent years and then he’ll move on to the WAC or the SunBelt where they just got football about 5 years ago. So go ahead techies and enjoy your new money cause lord knows you’ll be bankrupt soon enough. 30-24 nuff said. Where is St. Simons when you need him?

Dawgs Rule GEORGIA!! GT does NOT!

December 23rd, 2009
3:04 pm

It isn’t it funny but even with Tech’s 14 million share from the Orange Bowl added in and their athletic program still can’t come close to matching the wealth of the University of Georgia’s.

Even in a 7-5 season UGA still sold out every home game in a stadium that holds 92,600.

Even in a (inflated) 11-2 season Tech can only sell out its home games against UGA and Clemson. And all Tech has to do is fill up that little 55,000 seat stadium.

Might I add 30-24! Read it and weep!

The Dawgs proved that the ACC is weak!

December 23rd, 2009

The Georgia Bulldogs whipped the ACC champions and South Carolina whipped Clemson proving that the ACC is a second rate conference. I’d say the ACC is about equal to Conference USA or maybe the Mountain West and the ACC is somewhat below the WAC.

December 23rd, 2009

Georgia Tech is not that good! They are overrated and overranked. They are really lucky to be playing the next most overranked team in a bowl game! If Tech played in the SEC they would’ve only beaten the same two SEC teams they did beat. Mississippi State and Vanderbilt which both placed 11th and 12th in the SEC. Plus Tech gave up over 30 points to both of the SEC’s worst teams! Tech would have had a losing season in not only the SEC but the Big 12 and the Pact Ten as well and been only around .500 in the Big Ten or the Big East!

Too bad 14 million still isn’t enough to fix up your piece stadium, but it will help fund your free hotdogs and cokes program for next year.
You better set aside most of it to repair the field at the Joke by Coke since we cleated it up pretty good. It’s really not fun trashing your stadium, since it looks like someone already beat us to it.
Susan Boyle Johnson better use some of that money to buy recruits, because you are not going to like what you get when you are playing with all the douches he’s going to bring in.
30-24 – it never gets old.

Oh and to the guy that compared the schedules. There is no way that you beat clemson when they have a healthy Spiller like Tech did twice. Let us try and remember that Spiller had the flu against USC. No way UGA goes into FSU and beats them. Ponder throws all over you. There is no way that UGA offense could have kept up. If UGA had come down to Miami we would have destroyed you. No way UGA beats VT. That’s just not gona happen with TT back there. And if you use your logic you said Miami would beat UGA and VT destroyed us so… UGA loses. Then with UNC’s D I don’t see how UGA would score unless UNC threw a pick six. UNC wins. Oh and about Missy State. I wouldn’t be so sure with their new coach. I think UGA goes into MSU’s sold out stadium(it was sold out when tech was there) and is able to compete with the cowbells. So I’ll be nice and say UGA goes 1-1 against Clemson and only loses 5 games. Oh and to show how solid all the UGA fan’s logic is: Last year Ole Miss beat Florida. So I guess Ole Miss was the true National Champion last year. It couldn’t have been that Florida just had a bad game could it? Na Ole Miss must be the true defending National Champions

There is no disputing Tech has 4 National Titles (All of which are from undefeated seasons) and there is no disputing the fact that UGA only has only 2 National Titles. I’m a humbled ol’ ball coach, I was not as good as that Heisman or Bobby Dodd, that’s why I don’t have any awards named after me.

Here’s why UGA didn’t win a National Title in 1927 (The next year was Tech’s 2nd Title)

Georgia was highly rated to start the 1927 season and justified their rating throughout the season going 9–0 in their first 9 games. Alexander’s plan was to minimize injuries by benching his starters early no matter the score of every game before the UGA finale. On December 3, 1927, UGA rolled into Atlanta on the cusp of a National Title. Tech’s well rested starters shut out the Bulldogs 12–0 and ended any chance of UGA’s first National Title.

Claiming an MNC in 1946 and 1968!!! Now here is an idiot who posts without knowing anything about college football – or about the polls. And I love the claim for 1927 – a year when UGA lost to GT in their last game of the year.

Anyone who claims an MNC for UGA in 1968 knows nothing about CFB. They went 8-1-2 losing in the Sugar Bowl. Meanwhile, the 1968 Ohio State team was undefeated and untied, blew out Michigan and USC and is generally thought to be one of the best college teams in history.

But heck – UGA was picked #1 by a professor of Chemical Engineering at Vanderbilt (Litkenous).

Just about every poll in 1946 picked Army or ND. UGA was picked by the Williamson

Williamson System (1932-63), a power rating system
chosen by Paul Williamson of New Orleans, Louisiana, a
geologist and member of the Sugar Bowl committee.

Merry Christmas and Happy Shreveport to the entire, azz hole dog nation!

1. Please be careful as you begin your trek across Northern Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana.
2. If you hit Texas or Arkansas please stop and ask for directions.
3. Please invest in a new road atlas. I hear they have them marked down at all Fred’s and Wal Mart for $4.88. And only $4.99 at Dollar General.
4. Please, before leaving, turn your watch back one hour and your calendar back 30 years. This should be pleasant for you as it will put you near the early 80’s which you own!
5. Please play your Harry Munson Glory Years 8 track tape the entire way over to get your juices flowing so to speak.
6. Please change your oil before you go.
7. Please remember to leave some road kill for those traveling behind you that are more needy.
8. Please DO NOT cook your road kill at any of the rest stops along the way (at least the first ones you come to in each state).
9. I know Georgia travels “well” but please also try to travel discretely.
10. Please, if anything falls off of your truck, just leave it. Remember, there are TWO Wal-Mart’s in Shreveport
11. Please try some of the crawdad stew at the west bound rest area in Vicksburg MS.
12. Please clean up your tailgate trash before entering the Shreveport stadium
13. Please do not leave the stadium in the 3rd or 4th quarter if your team is taking another BEAT DOWN
14. Please do not drive into Kirby Smart’s Birmingham subdivision on your way home.
15. Please do stop by Legion Field in Birmingham and claim your Papa Johns bowl victory for next year.
16. Please refrain from calling or emailing President Adams and Damon Evans until you get home
17. Please make sure your Cable bill is paid up so you can watch real teams play in real (January) bowls.
18. Please make sure your Rivals bill is paid up so you can feel better about yourself and your program before signing day.
19. When spring gets here, please share with us how great your new weedwacker is
20. You are always preseason national champions in my book!

Maybe if people in atlanta actually attended sporting events your teams would be better because the teams would actually have money to spend on free agents? The Braves were two games back of the wild card and there were maybe 15,000 people at Turner Field. Kind of hard to spend money on a Jason Bay or Matt Holliday when people don’t show up for the games.

Mark Bradley, it’s a mistake to pay Kovy the max, just to keep him. All that does is “Bobby Holik” this team for the duration of the contract.

I’d offer him 10-years/$85 million, and if he says, “nyet,” I’d tell him to pack his bags for Edmonton, ‘cuze that’s where he’s being dealt by the deadline.
