One of the 25 clubs represented here today. (Extremely artistic photo by M. Bradley)
The press section is jammed today, and not with press. Twenty-five NBA scouts have been credentialed for today’s game — Georgia Tech is playing Florida State — and there are only 30 NBA teams. I conclude from this that the absent five are simply slackers.
The scouts are coming to see three big men who could wind up in 2010 first round — Solomon Alabi of FSU and Derrick Favors and Gani Lawal of Tech. Indeed, DraftExpress has two in the lottery. Favors is No. 2 behind John Wall of Kentucky, and Alabi is No. 14. And Lawal sneaks into Round 1 at No. 29.
Nine games into his one and surely only collegiate season, Favors hasn’t disappointed. He’s not going to be voted the freshman of the year nationally — Wall, who’s not just the best freshman but the best player in the land, will be — but that’s because Tech hasn’t needed him to score big every night. Lawal actually leads Tech in scoring and rebounding, but there’s no question who’s the bigger talent.
And to have two such big men at a time when big men are so scarce — ask Illinois coach Bruce Weber how much he’d trade for either of Tech’s guys — is the key reason Tech should have a splendid chance of reaching the Final Four.
That’s correct. I didn’t say the NCAA tournament. I said the Final Four. Tech has more talent than it has ever had under Hewitt, and early returns indicate there’s mesh being strung together. Iman Shumpert is out until January after knee surgery, but point guard Mfon Udofia has been better than advertised — among Jacket insiders, he was considered the key to the famous signing class — and rookie Brian Oliver has proved he can hit enough jump shots to keep defenses from zoning everything up.
(Tech fans know this already, but here, for newcomers, it is: This Brian Oliver is not the son of the Brian Oliver who helped drive the 1990 Jackets to the Final Four. They’re not related. Although Glen Rice Jr., yet another freshman, is indeed the son of Glen Rice, who helped drive Michigan to the 1989 national title.)
Tech fans will also recall that last season ended in despair after a last-gasp loss to FSU in the ACC tournament at the Georgia Dome. Shumpert took the last shot that day and missed. I’m pretty sure he won’t take a shot of any kind today. And I have great faith that the Jackets will win today. For one thing, Toney Douglas no longer plays for the ‘Noles. For another, Tech is good.
But I am, as we know, wrong on occasion. Indeed, I was wrong just last night at the Arena in Gwinnett. I figured the Illini would win that one going away. Georgia won and deserved to win. So just because Joe B. Hall and I got together and invented college basketball doesn’t mean I’m always right.
Join me for today’s proceedings and we’ll see how wrong — or, as happens once every 20 years , right — I am. I’ll be here until someone other than Shumpert takes the final shot, and I’d be obliged if you’d ride along. Thanks in advance.

Tech honoring the 1960 team and wearing throwing uniforms. They’re an improvement on the ordinary uniforms, IMHO.

Mark, thanks for your consistent, perceptive coverage of Atlanta sports over the years. Do you think this is FINALLY a make-or-break season for Hewitt? Despite the huge buyout in his contract, if he doesn’t coach the team to a couple of wins in the NCAA can D-Rad really justify keeping him any longer? What’s your take?

Noles up two at the first TV timeout. Tech will three consecutive turnovers. Noles very quick defensively, as is customary for them. Tech was playing a zone, then switched back to man-to-man and yielded a layup.

Thanks, FMJ. And I don’t think, owing to the size of his buyout, there is a make-or-break season. Although not making the NCAA tournament — which won’t happen — could make things interesting a year from now.

Tied at the second TV timeout. Tech with six turnovers.
Florida State is hard to play. The Noles have a talent, but Lenny the Ham — Leonard Hamilton, their head coach — likes games in the 60’s. They don’t run much.
Lawal just made a turnaround banker to tie. A year ago he’d have missed the backboard. He’s come a ways.

good to see we are still the dumbest team in the ACC. And that was a great play by Singleton, but if Oliver was not a poorly coached player he would not have allowed that to happen. Why follow him out of bounds and stand right next to him, apparently not expecting him to hit the ball back inbounds? The ball is going out of of FSU. Let it go. Or at least anticipate what he is going to do. We are the worst coached basketball team that I have seen in some time.

A couple of thoughts after watching about 5 minutes of this game, before I turn it off and read the score later. Just cant take it. Anyway, 1 – How can we be so bad at offensive rebounding, as quick and big as we are? and 2 – Why is it that every drive we make is out of control? Watch FSU go the basket, and watch us go the basket. Our guys are either stagnant and slowly passing the ball around, or we are moving but are totally out of control. Is it that hard to drive to the basket and remain under control, so you are able to go to the rim, stop and shoot, or stop and pass? When we drive I am happy if we dont turn the ball over. So depressing to watch this…

Everything about this basketball team says overratted! Paul Hewitt better or will be fired after this season because he cannot get this team to play solid fundamental basketball. They are suppose to be a better team but they look the same to me. Missed freethrows, no offensive movement and this fake preesure that every team scores off yet Hewitt continues to do it. This team wont finish at 500 in the league and will be praying for a bid in March.

I am a Tech Fan, but Freshmen or not, Hewiit has done less with more than any coach I have seen in quite awhile. He is still trying to coach every team like the one that went to the NCAA championship game. Slow it down, work for a good shot and play good defense. It was effective with that team, but every group is different and he stifles any creativity in the guard play and thusly almost never gets easy baskets on the fast break or on penetration and dishing.
I appreciate, just like I did Bobby Cremins, what he has done for Ga. Tech, but the time has come to buy out his contract and move forward.

Hewitt’s color, charisma, and social agenda helped him get the job, and may have bought him some slack the first year or two, but the only reason at this point that DRad and Tech tolerate his incompetence is the buyout. I just hope that some alum with more money than I have can dump a load of money on Tech with the express purpose of paying him off and saving the basketball program.

What amazes me is why GT is so concerned about the sum of CPH’s buyout! I mean we are GT…ALL our grads and supporters make sooooo much money with out GT degrees…..Anyone with one eye and half sense has to know that with all our money we can pay off CPH’s buyout and not bat an eye! Am I wrong?
We seem to forget WE….GT has been to just as many final fours as UGA! My god…we have won just as many championships in basketball as UGA! We are onje of the “elite” in college Basketball!
It is past time to step up to the plate…let the rest of the sports world know what we here inside the 285 perimeter know…..GT basketball is BIG TIME!
What’s a few millions to such an esteemed and wealthy group of GT grads? Hell UGA’s athletic has a surplus of 30 million plus….God cant count all the money that our esteemed institution has! Yet year after year we complain about the cost of CPH’s buyout…..GO FIGURE!

I think this season will end up being another top 25 for the Jackets. I hope we make it to the NCAA and expect we will, but with Hewitt, mediocrity is always possible. There is no reason we should not be a consistent Final Four team, and I expect that to change, but only if we change the leadership on the bench. Until then, this team will be blessed to make it to the dance.

The oxymoron for tonight is “Coach Hewitt”. This is my last year until he is gone. It just isn’t fun anymore. It is more fun watching an untalented team overachieve than a good team underachieve. Hewitt’s best coaching job wasn’t his final four team, it was his first year when he took a group of ordinary seniors and got them into the NCAA. I thought we were onto something special. I was wrong.

1. Hewitt has had only one winning season in the ACC (9-7).
2. Hewitt has one of the poorest graduation rates in the ACC.
3. Hewitt has perenially the fewest white players of any ACC team.
4. Hewitt has regularly recruited players who stay fewer than 3 years.
5. Hewitt has stated one of his primary aims is to give underprivileged kids a chance at an education through basketball scholarships.
6. Hewitt has the worst conference winning percentage for any coach with more than five years in the league.
7. Hewitt has no incentive for winning, having already banked his millions.
8. Hewitt has no intention of taking another coaching job when Tech finally fires him…and absolutely no intention of quitting.
9. Hewitt has very few former players who speak highly of him (cf. Cremins).
10. Hewitt has Tech over a barrel and is enjoying every minute of it.

Hewitt had a chance this summer to fix THE major problem with this team. No coach knows how to run the offense. Keener and Warren left after the 2005 season and we have underachieved every year since. The defense, the recruiting, and the off-court part of the program are all decent, but this offense problem is not going away. I have nothing against Darryl LaBarrie, but what Hewitt needed was some assistant that had a reputation for knowing how to coach offense. I guess he was too proud to admit what is obvious to everyone.

I’ve never been a fan of “fire the coach,” but I’m starting to come around. At least UGA had the guts to realize last year their program wasn’t going anywhere until they did something about it. And we don’t have to wait unitl next season – he’s going to guied the Jackets to to bottom of the ACC this season – even with all this talent. SEVEN free throw attempts, and 23 of 70 from the field!! As much as I respect Mark Price, and would love to have him on board to coach shooting and set a socially responsible tone for the players, I would like to see more evidence of his coaching and administrative abilities. I’m ready to drive the bandwagon to take Hewitt out of the state for good. Who is with me? This team looked horrible….I was there. Too much talent for this kind of performance. These guys are being coached down, not up. So much talent should not lose at home to FSU. FSU has talent but the coaching is not solid. I just do not get it. Why do we seem so mediocre with such great talent. Hewitt can recruit, he just can’t seem to coach his players up to a higher level. I think if we play this way all season, we may win 4 games in the ACC and that would not get us in the Tournament. At that point Hewitt should be gone. Obviously, we have some young talent but the mix is solid. Lawal, Peacock and Bell are solid upper class leaders. This win cannot be attributed to young inexperienced players. Several times Lawal was double and triple teamed. This has got to be expected. He needs to be coached to get the ball kicked back out to the open man for a good look at a three. If any team chooses to double our big men, there are many options and they should pay dearly for it.

GT76: I’m in, but we’ll need a warwagon more than a bandwagon….with a healthy war chest to buy him out also. It is amazing how “supportive” DRad and the GTAA is of CPH. Granted, if they are “stuck” with him they probably feel the need to back him up, but it seems he still has some of them charmed. A lttle healthy criticism might put a little healthy pressure on him. I wonder if they could limit his degree of control over the team and coaching staff??? At least maybe force a play for a negotiated buyout. But honestly, he has no, I mean NO motivation to leave: No reputable school would hire him now after his failure at Tech and he will never make even a fraction of this kind of money again…and for apparently a minimum of effort.

Thank God Coach Johnson and the football Jackets are giving us a couple of more weeks to enjoy before HAVING to focus more on basketball. DRAD, I know you are not listening, but this year I am one of those who did not renew season basketball tickets. I debated spending the extra money to upgrade my Football tickets, but decided to just keep it in the bank for now. After today’s game, I am convinced more than ever that it was the right choice. Perhaps Ma Tech can’t afford to pay off Hewitt, but we really can’t afford to continue to not sell out ACC games in the smallest home venue in the conference.

Write about how Hewitt should resign if Tech loses to Georgia again this year. Of course the game is the same night as the Orange bowl, so no one will know who won except for the 40 or 50 people at the game. Come on MB, admit that we just got out-coached big time. Hewitt never figured out how to beat FSU’s zone. We will see this over and over this year. Two of the best big men in college Bball and they are completely neutralized.
1. Why was Lawal and/or Favors on the bench during the last 8 minutes of the game?
2. Why are we out of time outs with 3 minutes left?
3. Why is Bell jacking a 3 at the end of the game?
Answer to all of those Q’s, poor coaching.
I was a big Hewitt fan when he first got to Tech, and he did great things up until the year after the Final 4 season. I can’t tell you why, but he has lost his ability to be an affective coach.
And for those wondering, this is definitely a make or break season for Hewitt. If he doesn’t produce (meaning at least finishing 4th in the conference and getting to the sweet 16 of the NCAA) then he is gone, no matter the buyout amount. The loss of revenue due to poor ticket sales is a bigger issue than the buyout. There is no reason that a team in the ACC in the Atlanta market shouldn’t be sold out for every game.

I never liked the CPH hire because I believed it was a political hire, not an informed athletic decision. I supported him and was encouraged by the early success. But after the big contract re-negotiation, CPH has become increasingly involved in off-campus causes and activities. No one would accuse him of being a hard worker or task master on campus. If he was graduating players and representing the university better with just a few more wins and few less excuses, then I could understand a reluctance to fire him. But you can’t represent a program when you are always losing, and losing in the worst ways. The upper echelon of the ACC looks at their schedule and knows they have an automatic “W” when they play Tech, whether in AMC or their own place. The rest of the teams know they have a good shot at a “W” regardless of how bad they are themselves. Just keep it close and wait for CPH to shoot his own team in the foot in the end.

Just wondering, but how many ACC schools would still hang on to a basketball coach with a record that Hewitt has compiled since the Final Four. Damn, you can only ride that for so long! Was Braine totally out of his mind when he signed on to that totally outrageous buyout! Has any coach— football or basketball ever, ever had that big of a buyout??? Do a little research Mark. And while I am at it: after 10 games I frankly think Favors is overrated. I saw him play in person against Sienna and asked someone if he was sick or just lazy. Freshman or not, if he was anywhere near as good as his press clippings, he would be totally dominating games. Hell, we can lose to FSU or any of the other 10+ ACC games we will lose just as well without Favors. If any NBA team is stupid enough to make him a high draft pick, then AMF!

I am mystified why you would make a totally unfathomable prediction like that full well knowing how mediocre of a coach Hewitt and how he has coached down all the talent he has had the last several years. In other words, how can you predict that Tech will go to the Final Four and then 3 hours later say in effect that you were not surprised that Tech lost. Don’t wait for the season to end to start looking, DRad. Face the inevitable. WE can’t afford to KEEP Hewitt! For every step forward Coach Johnson makes in Football, Hewitt takes us two steps back in Basketball….and last time I looked, we are in a BASKETBALL Conference. With renewed local, regional, and national attention and interest in Tech because of success in many of the other sports, don’t you think we should be packing AMC for every game, not to mention every ACC game? Just so disappointed… IF a coach can’t learn from five years of mistakes, how can we expect him to teach his players anything? Can anyone think of a single player under CPH who has matured and consistently improved during his time here. Granted, many of them never stayed more than a couple of years. The game experience helps, but players deserve to be taught and to be coached up at this level.

We are already the No. 1 laughing stock in the ACC. A writer from Raleigh, commenting on NCSU’s recent basketball woes and comparing them to Tech, suggested that what makes Tech so pathetic is that they aren’t changing anything (re: Coaches) and therefore don’t even have the hope or promise of the next season to come. Correctly judging the disgust and frustration of Tech fans, he wondered aloud how much longer Tech would be willing to be the butt of ACC jokes and the equivalent of “Vanderbilt in football in the SEC.”

Tech loses again. Does anyone wonder if Coach Hewitt even loses sleep any more after losing games the same way, time after time? I guess he could put himself to sleep by counting benjamins each night. An honorable man would acknowledge his limitations, offer to serve the university in another capacity (since he obviously couldn’t coach anywhere else in Div. I), and let the school replace him. He could still collect his ridiculous salary–without the automatic rollover–because that was Tech’s fault, not his. But at least he wouldn’t drag Tech’s program down with him, and lose legions of fans. (How many of the students from the last five years will even consider buying tickets once they are alums? And how many alums have already sold off their season tickets?) Coach Hewitt, my father is an alum, Class of ‘51, who doesn’t have many more good years of attending games. Please don’t continue to disappoint him by dragging down the team and the school.

You guys saying Dennis Felton are stupid, HEwitt a way better coach than that. He would get crushed in the ACC. All you idiots talking trash, its a long season. I think they looked good. For Fla State to shut down the inside game and no fouls being called when it was such a hack fest, that’s good just to get to overtime.
Hewitt can coach, we down by 8 with a few minutes left (and thats where the timeouts went). At one point you got 4 freshemn on the floor with Lawal. Peacock was the one to keep us in the game. Sure other teams know it will be a tough game if they take away our big men. But other teams don’t ahve the talent or height to do so. This was a hard matchup for us. Teams that will beat Fla State are big perimeter game teams (like Duke). And Fla State was picked to be #3 in the ACC so you guys saying we beat a mediocre team are wrong. We were picked just behind them. Don’t worry, we will beat the Va Tech’s, Clemson, State, UVA. And we have another game against these guys in Fla.
HEwitt is a good coach, if you have followed the games these guys are young. This was the team’s 10th game together. Everyone who is a UGA fan talks trash about the SEC being premier in football. Well the ACC is the same in Hoops. Every game a battle and other teams would get crushed playing that schedule. Just watch. I watched some SEC teams go at it. NO off the ball movement on offense (except Kentucky now) Jsut watch. I saw Miss State paly some small team in green. They were just standing around on offense….waiting for a guy to hit a 3.
And someone said where is UGA Hoops compared to Tech, I’ll tell you. UGA’s only 3 star recruit is a hope scholarship walk on at Tech! He red shirted this year because we are stacked inside. Yeah we might lose to UNC (wonn national title) and Duke (beat mightly Gonzaga by 30+ Saturday) but HEwitt will compete with those teams and jsut watch the scores, not many teams will be able to say that at the end of the year. And we ahve both of them at home and may beat one if not both. Hey would you rather be Clemson….0-54 against UNC at UNC lifetime, never won in Chapel Hill.
So keep talking UGA fans, we lost a close one in football, you beat a down Big Ten team this weekend (congrats), but you will lose to this team of freshmen with the “bad coach” you guys are bashing. This team looks really good. See ho well Fla State does this year. They will be close to the top in the ACC, just like Tech. And Tech has the hardest ACC SChedule. Top 3 preseason conference pick plus clemson…we play those teams twice. Thats the toughest schedule in the ACC hands down.

Coach Hewitt is not getting the job done. He is a great recruiter, a fine man, and a great representative for the Institute. Hewitt has to go. I don’t think he calls offensive plays. The strategy is to dribble around the perimeter and launch a three. As you have said, we have two potential first round picks that are big men. We don’t run plays to get them the ball! Very ugly team to watch. Like watching a Jr High team run down the court and throw the ball out of bounds or dribble off their foot.

Why in the world are we starting three freshman in an ACC game? Those three Freshman could all be Michael Jordan re-born, they are still freshman. 2 of those guys will likely be playing in the NBA next year plus Lawal. By the time this team starts to gel, at least three will be millionairs. When does the bleeding stop? In his 10th year he is three games below .500 in the ACC. The best he has ever done is a tie for 3rd in the ACC. Mark, what is Coach Hewitt’s road record while at Tech? it has to be just horrible.
