Chattin’ live! Babineaux, coordinators, Woodson, Wren!

It’s live chat time, and we’ll keep going until 1 p.m. You’re free to ask anything and everything, but I thought I’d start the festivities with a few topic suggestions, some of which came from you. (Thanks!)

• Would Georgia be better served hiring a Big Name defensive coordinator or looking for a guy from a smaller school whose profile is substantially lower? Brian VanGorder came from Central Michigan, did he not? (Then again, so did Willie Martinez.)

• The Hawks are 17-6. Mike Woodson is a lame duck, at least at the moment. Should that be remedied soon, or would Rick Sund be better off waiting until May/June to work a new deal? (But what if Woodson becomes a hot commodity after leading the Hawks to the Eastern Conference finals — don’t laugh — and leaves to take another job?)

• Can the Falcons win these final three games? Can they win another game? And if they end up 8-8 or worse, is the season a refutation of the Dimitroff/Smith Method? (I say no, but maybe that’s just me.)

• I have a Hall of Fame ballot. Should I vote for Mark McGwire? Should I write in Greg Norton’s name?

• Bobby Cox is approaching his final season. Will he work extra hard on nicknames for this last go-around?

• Tech basketball: Like what you’ve see so far?

• A submission from Daniel: Does playing Jonathan Babineaux the same week he was arrested give lie to the Falcons’ claims of being a character-first organization?

• A submission from Heath: Kennesaw State football — great idea or non-starter?

• Does Frank Wren know what he’s doing? Will Derek Lowe be traded? Should Derek Lowe be traded?

• Will it get even better for Paul Johnson and Tech, or is 11-2 the summit?

OK, there’s 10 ideas. We can discuss all, some or none. But I will make one request: Having said that you’re free to ask anything/everything, I’ll affix one asterisk. I’d rather not talk about Michael Vick. I’m tired of that one. I expect you are, too.

And with that, the figuarative microphone is open. I’m listening, Seattle Atlanta. (Sorry. Watched “Frasier” one time too many.)

Catching up here — you guys are going really fast, which I like, but I feel like I’m falling further and further behind — I think Heyward will start 2010 in Atlanta. Again, PMC, that’s a guess.

MB,

Just please tell me I won’t have to see Mr. Potato Head standing in front of the Hawks bench next year. Who would be your top 3 to replace Mr. Head when, not if, Sund decides to hire his own?

Mark- write in Greg Norton and don’t feel bad about doing it.

I would rather see an established DC come in. Someone to get recruits excited about playing under.

Getting Garrett Anderson instead of Adam Dunn, going after Nady instead of Holliday are just two reason why the BRaves will never contend again. Until either a salary cap (or a good alternative) are established or the Braves start spending they will NEVER compete again.

Mark: what about Manny Diaz stepping up to Dcoord. @ UGA? He’s got the Richt connection thru Amato and FSU & has experience running a defense. Thoughts/

Clusters always liked baseball best. Being a Clusters we was able to hit and run and throw. When they wrote that song about a Clusters brown-eyed-boy going out to centerfield, that was us.

I like Mularkey, but I like him for the reason a lot of folks don’t: Because he’s basic. I think he gets in trouble, Joe M., when he tries to do trick stuff. Guys either have the knack for that … or they don’t.

And Volgrad, I should report that I have and will again vote for Mark McGwire. As long as his stats are allowed to stand by baseball, why should I play Morality Cop for Bud Selig?

What about Ted Roof as DC? I know he played at Tech, but who cares! He has been an HC at Duke and DC at Tech and Auburn! He started his career at West GA after being a GA at Alabama under Bill Curry! My point is that he knows the state well and has recruited is successfully over the years! HE IS VERY INTENSE…UGA NEEDS THAT!!!

I think if Elam makes that kick not only do we win against Carolina but we also defeat the Giants the following week because we would all have been talking about Ryan’s great second half against the Panthers and how he’d turned things around…and then while we may have still lost to Philly & NO, we’d be 8 and 5 and sitting pretty.

Do you think the Hawks will need to get a big man to help with the playoffs this year, or will ZaZa and Horford work fine this year to fill that position?

Mark, I am disappointed that you are apparently willing to lie to keep up your support of gomer gailey.

Tech dropped from a Top 25 team (FOR 5 YEARS IN A ROW) to a team that never finished in the TOP 25 under gomer.

HOW THE HELLE IS THAT KEEPING THE STATUS QUO???????????

As for Babineaux: I’m a big fan of due process. Just because you’re arrested doesn’t mean you’re guilty. I admit it looks weird to have a guy on the field three days after he was arrested, but a lot of things in life are weird.

UGA21, UGA made a preliminary inquiry to Foster and he made it public so he could get a raise. At that time I don’t think CMR had decided but listening to him last night on the news I think now he has decided. I am certainly not close friends with CMR and my opinion means very little. JMO

Mark Bradley, unless you have 20 hand arms, I doubt you will keep up with the masses.

All that said, maybe next time you throw your thoughts out in topical chunks. e.g. the 11 – 11:15 block is college football. That would get you similar questions that you could group. Just a thought.

Benjamin

Bonds would be an easy explanation, MJ. He was the greatest player in baseball for several years before any suspicions — or larger cap sizes — began to appear. He was a jerk, but one of the strangest things to me is that he would’ve been an all-time great had he not started to swell in his last 5 years or so.

Ted Roof would be bad! All that matters when it comes to defense is scoring defense.

Ga was #70 this year but Auburn was #78 I believe. 2 of the worst in the sec. Shoot, Vandy was #48.

If you had to pick, Mark, whould you guess CMR will hire an ‘unproven’ as UGA’s next DC? By unproven, I mean someone that is not currently (or ever had been) a DC?

Mark Bradley

Were I Richt, BK, I wouldn’t hire someone who hasn’t been a coordinator at a Division I-A school. As esteemed colleague Tim Tucker always puts it: Why hire someone who hasn’t done it?

Opie

Mark, so you’re saying that you have to gauge the audience before making a decision? If I am assuming correctly, you are saying that Richt should go with someone who is popular, well known, and heavily experienced? That way of thinking is how the Falcons ended up with Marion Campbell……the 2nd time around.

If the guy can coach, he can coach. I’m not saying he is the choice, I just want to get your thoughts on him. Seems to be a good young coach, hungry, with experience and an aggressive defense. Played at big time program and has coached at big time programs.

I think Dimitroff does take previous injuries into account when drafting. He uses it as a means to get “value” for his picks. Baker, Jerry and Moore were all projected-prior to their injuries-to go higher than they did. Dimitroff rolls the dice a bit and hopes the prior injuries are completely healed. If so, he can “top 20″ talent at a discount. The jury is still out, however, on whether this will work.

Here’s a question….

Does this Kentucky team stay on the floor with 2007 Memphis, 2006 Florida, or 2008 UNC? I must admit that I just see this year being like 1976 when Indiana made that run after UCLA, Kentucky, and Marquette graduated those great teams
