It’s live chat time, and we’ll keep going until 1 p.m. You’re free to ask anything and everything, but I thought I’d start the festivities with a few topic suggestions, some of which came from you. (Thanks!)
• Would Georgia be better served hiring a Big Name defensive coordinator or looking for a guy from a smaller school whose profile is substantially lower? Brian VanGorder came from Central Michigan, did he not? (Then again, so did Willie Martinez.)
• The Hawks are 17-6. Mike Woodson is a lame duck, at least at the moment. Should that be remedied soon, or would Rick Sund be better off waiting until May/June to work a new deal? (But what if Woodson becomes a hot commodity after leading the Hawks to the Eastern Conference finals — don’t laugh — and leaves to take another job?)
• Can the Falcons win these final three games? Can they win another game? And if they end up 8-8 or worse, is the season a refutation of the Dimitroff/Smith Method? (I say no, but maybe that’s just me.)
• I have a Hall of Fame ballot. Should I vote for Mark McGwire? Should I write in Greg Norton’s name?
• Bobby Cox is approaching his final season. Will he work extra hard on nicknames for this last go-around?
• Tech basketball: Like what you’ve see so far?
• A submission from Daniel: Does playing Jonathan Babineaux the same week he was arrested give lie to the Falcons’ claims of being a character-first organization?
• A submission from Heath: Kennesaw State football — great idea or non-starter?
• Does Frank Wren know what he’s doing? Will Derek Lowe be traded? Should Derek Lowe be traded?
• Will it get even better for Paul Johnson and Tech, or is 11-2 the summit?
OK, there’s 10 ideas. We can discuss all, some or none. But I will make one request: Having said that you’re free to ask anything/everything, I’ll affix one asterisk. I’d rather not talk about Michael Vick. I’m tired of that one. I expect you are, too.
And with that, the figuarative microphone is open. I’m listening, Seattle Atlanta. (Sorry. Watched “Frasier” one time too many.)

Ric, that’s a great question. I don’t think Sund is unimpressed by Woodson, but let’s keep in mind that Sund didn’t hire Woodson — he inherited him. And deep within every general manager lives the urge to hire his own guy.

I for one always thought the AJC was biased toward UGA…but have perceived a swing this year. But that probably is because its usually easier to say good things about a team when a few good things are actually happening for that team…which hasn’t been the case for Tech consistently over the last couple of decades.

Mark…you are FACTUALLY IN ERROR!!!
gomer gailey inherited a team that had finished in the TOP 25 for 5 SEASONS IN A ROW!!!
Not once did a gomer gailey team finish in the TOP 25. NOT ONCE.
So why are you willing to “massage the truth” to foolishly support gomer???

Brucemac, Irk wanted the head coaching job at Tech but didn;t get it. Big fan of Irk, hello of a guy, hell of a coach, but that’s going pretty far back…

I don’t see any way Hewitt gets fired anytime soon, Eastside. (That contract of his precludes it.) But I think Tech fans have reason to expect this team to make the NCAA tournament and win some games there. It’s a good-looking team.

Mark,
Seen John Wall yet in person?
Faster than Derek Anderson. Faster than Rondo(Rajon, not Kia).
DC hire:
It doesn’t matter if he is 65 or 35, if he can coach, motivate and teach fundamentals, I’m all for him. Whoever he may be.

In regards to Braves – I think ownership is where the problem lies in not making it back to postseason…where is Ted Turner when you need him?

2 questions. Why didn’t the Braves just sign one of the 2 relievers they had instead of paying the same amount for a 38 year old coming off tommy john surgery? Are the Braves talking about signing Laroche?

Herschel, I’d agree with Keith Law about Wagner vis-a-vis Soriano. Were this the Billy Wagner of 2001, I’d feel differently. But we’re about to begin 2010.
And I think LaRoche will probably get a better long-term offer elsewhere. Whether he stays will depend on how much he likes being around his buddy Chipper.

You say that Woody is held in “high regard” among other NBA types, but I question just how highly his current general manager regards him. I feel that the Hawks have had more of “natural progression” through maturation and seasoning than that of Woody’s coaching — and that isn’t to take ALL credit away from Woody — I just don’t give him as much.
I feel that the progression from the Hawks should have come faster and in much larger doses, given the talent.
College teams play better “help defense” than the Hawks…

I haven’t seen John Wall in person, Dawginlex, but he’s probably the best player in the country. Better than Derrick Rose, who was pretty darn good.

With the Angels losing Lackey do you think they become a hot team to come after one of the Braves pitchers and if so who would be the best option for the Braves to get in return for Lowe and who would they get in return for Vasquez?

Two comments and your thoughts please……..
As a Hawks Season Ticket holder in Columbus, it sure would be nice if game start times were at 7:30 instead of 7:00 AND maybe we would have a full house at tip off instead of the late arriving crowds we always get.
As a UGA Season Ticket holder, do we want a “big name” guy who will be here a year or two and then bolt to a HC job OR do we want an up and comer who we can count on being here a while??

Mark, dont you think this Derik Lowe deal is going to get done sooner than later. I do not see the Angels giving up Rivera though as they are in need of some offense right now and giving up him would hurt them further.

Is it possible that Woodson has grown as a coach in the same timing as the team has improved? In other words, he really sucked early on like the team and both have improved, proving patience is it own reward? Could it be? And if thats true, it would appear to me they need to sign him.

Who will the Braves find for the coveted role of washed-up-veteran-Bobby-likes-for-clubouse-leadership-and-presence role this year? Former occupants include your boy Greg Norton, Chris Woodward, the second edition of Brian Jordan, etc.
