Live from the Dome: A former prince returns to the city

The reunion we've long awaited: Arthur M. Blank and MV7. (Photo by M. Bradley)

The midfield reunion we've long awaited: Arthur M. Blank and Michael Vick. (Photo by M. Bradley)

Michael Vick has returned to the Georgia Dome. He jogged on the field at 11:24 a.m. He received a polite round of applause. (There weren’t many folks in the stands yet.) The first person he approached was Jimmy Cribb, the longtime Falcons photographer. The two embraced.

“He told me I always took good pictures of him,” Cribb said, “and if I got anything good today to send them to him.”

Then came the long-awaited meeting with Arthur Blank. (See above photo, shot by someone much less professional than Jimmy Cribb.) And then Reggie Roberts, the Falcons’ VP of communications, walked over to Vick. More hugging ensued.

Roberts: “He told me he missed being here. He misses the city, misses the Dome. He said he was crying on the bus ride over.”

Along those lines, here’s a snippet of an as-told-to article Vick did with David Fleming of ESPN The Magazine. Here’s Vick speaking his mind on, of all things, the Dome:

“I’m looking forward to going back to the Georgia Dome. I may not do much. I may not even play in the game. But just having the opportunity to be there and maybe have a chance to talk to the Falcons owner, Mr. Blank, before the game — that would be a great thing for me. I spent many a Sunday making that crowd go wild, and I appreciate all those fans. They were great. Man, I miss [those] days.”

In all the furor over Michael Vick, one truth kept getting lost: No matter what he did, the guy’s still a human being. And now he’s again a football player. We don’t know much he’ll play today, if at all. And we don’t yet know — it’s only 11:45 — how the crowd will be. My guess: Warm toward Vick, warmer toward the Falcons.

Speaking of whom: The home side is up against it. Here’s the inactive list: Matt Ryan, Michael Turner, Michael Jenkins, Sam Baker and Harvey Dahl. That’s five offensive starters out for what is a game with massive playoff ramifications. (The Falcons and Eagles are tracking the same wild card.) The only consolation, and it’s slim: Philly is missing playmakers DeSean Jackson and Brian Westbrook.

And that’s why a 7-4 road team is a 5-1/2 point favorite over a 6-5 opponent. You never see that in the NFL, but today seems a day where form could take a hike. The Falcons are undermanned, but there’s almost a last-stand element to this one. Meaning: On this given Sunday, the desperate club could just lift itself by its bootstraps.

And I’ll be here to watch and report, as we say in the trade, with one difference: I have permission from AJC.com higher-ups not to make this a live chat, but because the day has started on a bright conciliatory note I’ve decided to open the floor for comments. Should we devolve into our usual volley of back-and-forthing, the live chat will go away and will not re-open. It’s your choice. Thanks in advance.

Back after a self enforced exile from Wednesday’s wonderful announcement.

I wanted to take time to savor the situation, as well as hold back, because, as horrible and terrible a job those three coaches did, they now find themselves looking to put food on their family’s table.

They, of course, will find it much easier to find work than I did for two months, being that no matter how terrible you are, the coaching fraternity takes care of their own.

That being said, I believe Andy Reid will try and find a spot for Sick Vick in the game today.

I, of course, expect the mentally challenged at the game to cheer him, but also expect the normal people in the stands, both black and white, to boo the hell out of him.

That being said, I only have one other thing to say for the time being:

To paraphrase from “Apocalypse Now”:

“I love the bitter taste of Tim Tebow’s Little Girl Tears in the morning… it tastes like… VICTORY.”

Just read that the CHOKE may be done for the season and if he does have toe turf, he may be done for good, so…………

What do they do about the quarterback next season…………. Interesting and a lot of guaranteed money for an inactive player

Should have never let Vick’s contract go. Today we would be celebrating his return to a starter (only temporarily) and his redemption story would be uplifting. He also owes AB about 10M so he would be getting a return ion his crappy investment.

Instead..,Falcons lose miderably to the Eagles today.

BTW…we would still have the best young QB in the league healing with MR!!!!

For all intense purposes Rodney Garner will be the DC for UGA’s bowl game. Could that be a dress rehearsal? Kind of surprised Willie left Richt high and dry for the bowl game and Garner didn’t. Of course Willie has no future with UGA and Garner might.

Not sure why Tyrone Nix would leave Ole Miss to come to UGA. He has already made that lateral move. Kirby Smart on the other hand, could be offered head coach-in-waiting if he makes the move. It is fun speculating but I wish they would make a hire already.

Norwood’s hip is probably still messed up, hence his lack of speed.

Injuries are always this team’s achilles heel, and why they’ve never gotten back to back winning seasons. At least this year it took 15 guys getting hurt to finally affect us, instead of just one or two.

All of a sudden, the overthinker Mularkey with all his gadgets, shifts and motion becomes a Pop Warner coach.

JJM,

We should’ve drafted Johnson instead of William Moore (where has William Moore been?). He was a once-projected top 10 pick, fell because of a “questionable work ethic,” and has done more for one of the top defenses in the league (Cincy) that either Moore or Sidbury have for the Falcons.

As a Tech fan, I wanted him, but had a hunch Dimitroff wouldn’t spend his first and second round picks on the D-line (though it’s obviously a need).

Reeves built an offensive line good enought to get to the Superbowl…Vick has 2 playoff wins, Brees has one. However, Brees is growing into a great QB, Vick, not so much. If we had it to do over, Brees was the better long term pick for sure….O line? I don’t know what we had, blocking for Vick was not like blocking for a pocket passer. Plus, then Mora brought in the cut blocking scheme with small lineman.

Had they tried a pass in that spot, Redman would probably have gotten buried or thrown it right into an Eagles defender.

Maybe some sort of roll-out and flood to one corner would have worked, but with the entire backup offense in today, nothing is given.

You’d think we had a veteran team instead of a second year rebuilding project.

You’d think we were currently 2-9 instead of 6-5.

“How many back-to-back” winning seasons does Brees have?

You want to know just how little Vick feels any remorse, just read what the moron says. See the massive ago in the words he says without his mentor around, or Eagle’s PR staff around, to tell him what to say.

Some people want to buy his b.s. remorse act because of liberal white guilt.

All the same, nice gesture to give Vick a fairly easy shot at the endzone, and touchdown against his former team.

better use of free agency Coleman has always been trash… if we continue to go young get a proven product, of course he would never fall to us, but ideally the best safety in the draft bar none Berry.

I hear you. Coleman’s not a bad player, he gets into position better than Chris Houston does, that’s for sure. I don’t think he’s the long term solution either, and I’m still kinda high on Moore. Perhaps Moore and Decoud are the future. If Decoud gets a pass as a young player, I say Moore does too. Let him get healthy and up to speed on the play book. Think he might surprise you.

Hello,
Losing our 2nd round pick to KC for Gonzalez is really going to hurt. I have a feeling they also knew we are a cursed bloody franchise that is incapable of having consecutive winning seasons.

Granted we are without our starting QB and RB, but this has been a horrible game. The 4th down calls are difficult to defend. Especially the 4th and 2 with little time left in the 2nd quarter.
At least the Hawks are looking respectable.

I wish Blank would move the Falcons out of Atlanta. The dome will be done, and off to Gwinett County for the Falcons in 5 years.”
__________________________________________________________________________
Those wealthy Gwinnett folks do not want the trouble, traffic, or the taxes it would take to build a $Billion Dome (with a retractable roof and grass field) up there… Plus, The Flowery Branch and the players homes are too close..

People never seem to figure that out by now….and nobody in the local media is willing to break the bad news to the fans that want it up there.

The did not want to build one for The Braves at their peak!

It’s a wealthy Suburban County!

Atlanta has the hotels, the sewage system, Mass Transit, and they will tax the hell out of everyone for this stadium.

Any new Dome will be downtown.

L.A. does not have a team or a Dome because their Gwinnett or Alpharetta, The residents of Anaheim do not want to be taxed for a dome, and they do not want the traffic or trouble. The referendums do never pass for a prospective owner to bid for a NFL team.

Looks more like our third team than our second team. I’m still backing our Falcons, though.

We were wingin’ it on a weak secondary, which we tried to bolster with some free agency signing. Started strong, but Ryan struggled with the sophomore jinx, Turner was slow out of the gate, and we began losing starters one after another. Our already patch-work, young defense lost starters Peria Jerry and Brian Williams, and Pro Bowler John Abraham is executing a serious disappearing act.

Here’s what’s funny. People predicted we would go 4-12 with a much tougher schedule, yet here we sit at soon to be 6-6, despite all the problems. I’m proud that our team has managed to do THAT well in the second year of a rebuilding. By the way, the worst we can be now is 6-10, but I’m hoping for 9-7, so that at the very least, we can finally have back-to-back winning seasons, which is a great foundation to build upon for the future.

All things considered, it could be and probably should have been worse than this. But it isn’t. Talk mediocrity all you want. This team was mediocre even in the so-called Vick glory days, at least every other year. Here’s to hoping this changes as we rebuild yet again.

“Falcons can still have winning seasons. Again, you are never as bad, or as good as you think…Look for further than NO and Washington.”

It doesn’t seem to work here..

They needed a D-Lineman to pair with DE John Abraham (like Richard Seymour), until the youngsters “grow-up”. Physically they are too small, and too young to meet fan expectations. The Falcons Marketing seems to be not selling the future returns of a young team, they are selling “We are winners now”.

They are asking big OLBs to cover..

They are asking street free agents to be starters..

The defensive scheme is flawed…again. It cannot be the players only.

They still need a true NT…like Cody. Jerry will need two seasons after his knee surgery to return to form.

I also think that these players are too comfortable in Atlanta and Georgia.. some of these mistakes, and coaching mistakes would not be tolerate for 4 years in NYC, Dallas, or a real winning franchise.

Devout Falcon fans such as myself (35 years and counting) dont deserve this. We did nothing to Vick but support him. He betrayed us. I am happy for Vick the man. But this is so typical for us as fans. Now it is somehow our responsibility to watch his coming out party in our (so called our) stadium. This is rubbing our nose in it and we don’t deserve it.

We got to be the fodder for New Orleans Saints return after Katrina. Now this. Why do we have to be continually in this position. NO franchise has a sadder history than this one. No fans have suffered more. We wont make the playoffs now. We wont get back to back winning seasons. We wont have a winning season next year either. Something will happen then too.

But we get to watch Vick celebrate in our faces. We dont deserve this. But it is our destiny.

None of this should be a big shocker. The Eagles were without Westbrook, Curtis and Jackson but Weaver (FA), Maclin (draft), and McCoy (draft) contributed over 200 yards of offense through 3 quarters.

The Falcons? Not nearly so fortunate replacing key cogs Ryan and Turner, Dahl and Baker. (Not sure how much missing Jenkins mattered). But when one team has the services of their top draft picks and the other doesn’t — in addition to injuries to veterans — the game is subject to getting out of hand.

When Vick was in Leavenworth, KS., he had this weird dream of coming to Atlanta and scoring a touchdown. And then he would sit on the sideline and hear the crowd chant “We Want Vick!” He would come out to the Dome and make a big pass and then score a passing TD.

And then he woke up because he had to go to the yard.

Today, that dream came true.

In other words, even during the “Vick era” we couldn’t win more than one year at a time. Where in my post did I say that this started with Vick? I also said that I was hoping that we could finally break that trend this year. I think you heard what you wanted to hear, NOT what I actually said.

Did you think a team can completely rebuild their franchise from oblivion in one season? We have acquired some very good football players the last 2 years. The problem is we have more impact injuries than I believe I have ever seen on a football team. I think I am starting to believe in curses. It is really uncanny. This franchise is going in the right direction. The fan problem comes from Atlanta being the transplant capitol of the United States. Cleveland and Green Bay have great fans because who the heck wants to move there? Everyone here is from somewhere else and supports the Atlanta teams second or not at all. Hawks first place, lose 2 games and “they suck, same old hawks” Braves 14 straight pennants, one bad year and “they suck, fire cox, trade chipper” (although i agree about cox). I don’t know how Mark can be a sports reporter in this town. How do you do it? It is quite ridiculous.

Sorry, I was watching the game at home. All I saw when the cameras were on him, was him flipping the bird at the stands. I’m sorry that I didn’t know it was meant for two specific people. Perhaps you have their names so that I can send them nasty grams for making Vick flip them off and look bad on national tv, seeing as how the whole situation was their fault.

In the meantime, while you were reading things into my posts that I didn’t put there, you’ve missed all the hell I’ve been giving Andy Reid for not playing Vick the way he did against us today. Reid has treated him like a cheap gimmick, despite Vick’s ability. But you can’t see that. As an ardent fan and supporter that you show yourself to be, you should be outraged by that. Vick still has capability, but he can’t get on the field for much of anything until he faces his former team, which had a suspect defense when it was still healthy.

Funny, I don’t hear YOU talking about that. I may not be a Vick-4-ever fan, but I can at least be objective about things.

Exactly. But so many people just DON’T get it. You DON’T build a perennial contender in a single season, or even in two. Not even if you have enough money to sign a bunch of big name players. Ask the Redskins or the Raiders.

I feel sorry for anybody who wants Dimitroff or Smith out of here. It’s just not going to happen this year. We’re in rebuilding mode. People are so funny. They talk trash after an 11-5 season, and talk about how we had such an easy schedule. They then say we’ll suck this year and go 4-12 because the schedule is that much tougher. Ryan, Turner, Jenkins, Dahl, Baker, Douglas, Jerry, Williams. Too many injuries to key players. And some folks have even said Redman was not that much of a drop off? I seen the first game the Falcons eve rplayed and have seen most since. No matter what, I’m glad we have Blank, Dimitroff, Smith and Ryan. The battle was lost today, but the war will be won. We are still headed in the right direction.

Vick has two touchdowns on the day, one rushing and one passing. Will Reid use him more, now?

The way the Eagles have used him has been absolutely shameful.

Having said that, their future is CLEARLY with McNabb, as it should be. Ours rests with Ryan. Case closed.

At least Vick got back into the NFL, back to earning a paycheck. I don’t think it will get any better than that, but it’s better than the alternative.

It’s time to stop blaming injuries, free agency, and all other factors for loosing WAH WAH WAH. It was very plain and simple lack of preparation (Coaching is completely to blame). First trial should be removing OC and DC from the team period. RUN THE FALL FOUR TIMES IN A ROW. Against a number 9 defense in the league. ZERO CREATIVITY.

GET THE CHECKBOOK OUT TD, time for some decent free agents.

For those who disagree w/ me I ask you to name another athlete in any sport who disrespected and hurt their teammates and organization as much as MV did?

Thankfully and by the grace of god the Falcons recovered and did not fall into the depths of dispair… but to see everyone from A. Blank (pregame) to the fans in the stands cheer and revere MV makes me want to move from this town. (MV still owes the Falcons over 7 million dollars… and that is a low estimate)

Correction:

if you could read Gonzales face: “What the heck were The Falcons thinking trading for me! They have no defense!”

Remember, TE Gonzalez refused this trade from The Chiefs this time last season.

That was not a move of a team which was supposedly, “In The Process”.

TG only has 2 more seasons left, and it may become a s sad, sad, story.

Falcons staff contradicted themselves.

I think they became to enamored with the possibility of Ryan making a Pro Bowl in his second season-instead of building the defense with their money.

This is the absolute worst nightmare for the Falcons. Vick comes to town with his new team and just embarrasses them. Absolutely incredible. Here’s what I see: I think the Falcons are built as one brick upon another. But if one brick goes down, the house falls.

We need depth at every level. That’s the issue here. The Falcons aren’t a bad team, but it’s too shallow. And the injuries killed this team.

That being said, the Falcons will be 6-6. Next week, we will be 6-7. But if all goes as planned, the Falcons should end up at 9-7.

But here’s the big issue: Can the Falcons step up and beat the Jets? If the Falcons beat the Jets, we should have a winning season. If not, that’s it.

Two points:

1) — The folks disparaging the Falcons are totally ignoring the fact that the team was decimated by injuries. The Falcons should be better next year, if for no other reasons than the draft and better health. Also, Mike Smith didn’t forget how to coach and Thomas Dimitroff isn’t a one-year wonder.

2) — Congratulations to Vick on a good showing. I’m glad to see it. Most, if not all of his most vocal critics have never met the man. I believe in redemption.

This is the most pathetic games the Falcons have played. Where was Finneran all day, RW you held and you get flagged for motion and offside. Atlanta was in this game for the 1st half and couldn’t get a TD or FG. You let Vick come back and he and the Eagles were standing on the sideline laughing. Why can’t Atlanta ever get guys who take pride in their team and 1st, 2nd string step up to play. Now we’re 6 & 6 with the Saints coming in…this team sucks!!!!!

OldFalconFanNC

I agree with the brick upon brick idea. But the Falcons are going to be VERY hard presssed to win ONE more game let alone 3 more games. The Jets and Bills if nothing else can play pretty good defense. So the streak will continue.

I just have to go back to when they drafted Vick. I was so excited that the Falcons had a player of that caliber. And watching him, it looked to me that Vick had a chance to be a great player and that he was going to make the Falcons a playoff team every year. Too bad he blew it! And what pisses me of the most is that Mike Vick and his fans seem to feel some kind of vindication today. To me, there is only one loser here and that is Mike Vick. He is the one that threw his career away.
