Rx for Mark Richt: Try Smart first, then Ellis Johnson

Needed: A defensive coordinator who understands how defense must be played in the SEC.

First choice (and a no-brainer): Kirby Smart, the Georgia alum who coaches Alabama’s defense.

Problem: It’s not even a lateral move for Smart, Alabama being a demonstrably better program than Georgia. And Alabama can, as we know, outspend the Yankees to keep the guys it wants.

Possible bit of leverage: Nick Saban is a notoriously tough boss — the anti-Richt — and is still widely seen as the man behind Alabama’s D. Smart might want to strike out on his own.

Plan B: Ellis Johnson of South Carolina.

The new defensive coordinator should be:

View Results

Loading ... Loading ...

Why him: He has done great work with lesser talent than Georgia’s, and he has coordinated defenses at Alabama and Mississippi State. And he did what a lot of folks can only dream of doing: He bailed out on Bobby Petrino after a month at Arkansas.

Why he might leave: No one knows how much longer Steve Spurrier will coach South Carolina, and even if Spurrier stays another five years it’s clear the Gamecocks will always hit a ceiling in the SEC East.

Possible roadblock: His contract runs through 2011.

Other names: Tommy Tuberville isn’t going to take an assistant’s job. Will Muschamp, another UGA grad, isn’t coming; being coach-in-waiting at Texas trumps being defensive coordinator at Georgia. Brian VanGorder seems happy in Flowery Branch, and it takes a lot to make BVG happy. Charlie Strong, formerly of South Carolina and now of Florida, is apt to become head coach at Louisville. And there seems no cause to promote Rodney Garner: Why bump up the lone holdover from a defensive staff Mark Richt just admitted was substandard?

The best guess: Smart stays in Tuscaloosa and Ellis Johnson moves to Athens.

Would that be an upgrade over Willie Martinez? No more than a suite at the Ritz-Carlton would be an upgrade over a room with two double beds at Motel 6.

Would LOVE to see Smart come back to Athens as DC but I’m afraid you’re right about the Crimson Tide money situation. Maybe if they made him head coach in waiting? Richt has been here for a while now and although nobody’s in a hurry to see him go, maybe that’s the way of the college football world now. Just a thought. Anyway, Ellis Johnson would be much better than what we’ve been accustomed to here for a while if that doesn’t work out.

You’re kidding about Ellis Johnson, right? He’s not going to take another DC job just for the “privelege” of living in Athens, particularly as he’s a SC native.

And as to the crack about SC always “hitting a ceiling,” while history gives you plenty of ammunition for this argument, 9 returning starters on offense, and 8 on defense suggests this may be a very good team the next few years, particularly with some 23 of 44 on the two-deep currently underclassmen. I’d say that “ceiling” might be pretty high.

While Florida will still be formidable, they do have to replace Tebow and Spikes- no mean feat. Georgia will be breaking in a new QB and defensive coordinator, and Tennessee will still be coached by Lane Kiffin. If you ask me, the SEC East could prove to be very, very interesting next year.

Four years ago Kirby Smart left LSU (coached by Nick Saban), where he was the defensive backs coach, to coach running backs at UGA. Why would Smart, an All-SEC safety, want to coach running backs? Because it’s UGA. His school. His wife’s school. I hear people saying he wouldn”t leave Bama for Georgia but what occurred four years ago says differently

If I were CMR, which I am not, I would talk with Tony Dungy. Maybe Dungy says no, but as my little league coach used to preach: You can’t get a hit with the bat on your shoulders.
I think CMR and CTD share many similar philosophies concerning faith and the development of young men. He is the creator of the “Tampa 2″ and also knows how to dissect it. I doubt there would be many kids who wouldn’t want to play for CMR and CTD.

Maybe Dungy misses the teaching and coaching side of football and doesn’t want the extra stress that permiates from the NFL.

Never hurts to ask.

Mark Bradley, sir, you and Tony Barnhart simply amaze me.

You know nothing about football, and have proven it again and again through the years.

This latest, hire Ellis Johnson.

41 points.

Excuse me, we scored 41 points on Ellis Johnson this year.

Besides Arkansas, that is the most we racked up all year long.

Ellis Johnson played DE with The Citadel Bulldogs.

Ellis Johnson was 12-22 at The Citadel as Head Coach.

Since then, he has been the DC at first Missiissippi State and then South Carolina, not exactly the path of a Erk Russell.

He has ZERO NFL experience.

Please stay out of this Mark Bradley, lest you write more B.S. such as your Guarantee of what Tech would do to UGA Saturday night. You were wrong on that too. Why don’t you try owning up to that instead of making another fool of yourself on this college football topic.

His defensive style is a soft bend-don’t break that none of us UGA fans want to ever see again.

Remember how CMR first hired Van Go, he had only seen him coach, and he was and is a great DC. If the choice is up to CMR he will likely go to lower lever program where the DC is outstanding and UGA will be a huge step up. I’d lover Kirby too, but he can’t make a lateral move at this point in his career. We need someone who wants to come to UGA, how about a real long shot and ask Pollock, no experience, but he played with his motor running full tilt every down, he is a Erk R waiting on the opportunity. We know we have done worse, and I can’t imagine a youngster no being impressed with him. Ok it would be outside the box but I like it more than any other likely hires>

Mark my words, no pun intented, CMR will move Rodney Garner up the ladder to DC.

Several reasons. 1) Garner definitely WANTS promotion, if its not at UGA then he’s gone 2) Richt will do this for damage control with recruits 3) Richt already supports hiring from within, he’s hinted at it before 4) Every single one of the players respect him and are influenced by him. 5) Richt knows what to expect from him and he’s comfortable with him.

If there were Vegas odds on this I’d bet the house….

Hello Mark: You have asked: “And there seems no cause to promote Rodney Garner: Why bump up the lone holdover from a defensive staff Mark Richt just admitted was substandard?”

In one word: Recruiting! Hereinafter is an entry that I posted after a Jeff Shultz column, which followed the Kentucky debacle. Can you (or anyone else) shed any light on the likelihood of Garner returning to the putrid “Big Arnge” if Richt doesn’t promote him?

“I’m a long, long way from my beautiful Georgia, and few people over here will care that our vaunted, proud program has sunk to such a low level. I’m sick over it! Richt should remember that Phil Fulmer refused to fire his assistants. Lots of UT-Fulmer loyalists say now that he should have been dismissed several seasons ago. Remember that horrible whipping that Kiffin’s first team gave us a few weeks ago? Remember how Kiffin vowed NEVER to lose to Georgia? He may be counting on Richt’s mulish determination to keep Martinez.
If Richt does not fire Martinez immediately after the season and replace him with Rodney Garner, I fear that we will lose Garner, probably (back) to UT. I can’t bear the thought! I remember how Fulmer beat us like a drum, year after year, with so many of our own state’s better players!! Richt has won the recruiting wars because he has had Garner. Richt should promise Garner the Defensive Coordinator’s job NOW or resign.
Even way over here, I’ve heard the troubling rumor that contractual obligations will prevent Richt from firing any of his assistants! I don’t know any Bulldog fans who want Martinez to keep his job. I wonder if a majority still wants Richt to keep his own. I realize how successful and humble he has been, and he has made us proud. Still, this debacle makes me angry. The UT game and this one are simply inexcusable. We cannot tolerate this. The pronoun “we” includes Damon Evans. He has increased the contribution demands on season-ticket holders. With that money, he is being paid quite well to make tough decisions. So is Richt.”

I like the recommendation from Gravy Train > Bring in Tony Dungy. His demeanor and personal beliefs are in-line with Richt’s, and he would bring immediate-impact respect to the DC position and from the players. Also, the families of recruits and the recruits themselves would be sold on UGA as soon as Dungy walked into their homes. Dungy is a no-brainer, but getting him here might be an uphill battle.

While Garner is a great recruiter, I think he would have been promoted to a coordinator position long ago if he was capable. If I’m not mistaken, he was a holdover from Donnan’s staff who was retained for his recruiting ability. With that recruiting prowess, it is certain another school would have gone after him for a DC position IF he could handle it. Apparently, his abilities as a recruiter do not translate to a high performance level as a DC.

All he knows how to do is blitz — we already tried that scheme when Donnan was here and hired the guy from Tenn. — it dd not work then and it will not work now. The idiot must be a Ga. Tech fan.

December 3rd, 2009
6:54 am

I keep reading the same ol names – Tenuta (as Mark says, VASTLY overrated – proved that this year), Joe Lee Dunn (old), Ellis Johnson (old), Kirby Smart (too smart to leave AL, Chuck Amato (old, old, old); Tony Dungy (are you kidding me – he said on TV Sunday night that he is not even coaching pee wee football anymore); and Garner, according to David Pollack yesterday, while a great recruiter does NOT have the ability to juggle the duties of a DC – he did say he would probably make a good head coach though!

The only suggestion that made any sense was to get the guy from TCU – their defense this year is out of sight, but that may be due to who they play. We will know more about Kevin Steele from Clemson after this weekend, but he does not seem like a viable choice, either.

What we need, and what suspect CMR will do, is find an up and coming guy (like Bo Pellini when he was at LSU) and recruit him to be the new DC – and that is how it should be.

Recycling old names never works – ever!

I am with you Douglas – Tenuta is a joke, as are all the other “names” suggested here – Kines, Ellis Johnson, Amato, Smart, Joe Lee Dunn, Tony Dungy (now that is an all time dumbass suggestion), etc – even David Pollack said that Garner is a great recruiter and position coach but does not have the acumen to be a DC (and Richt knows this).

No, the way to go is to find an up and comer (possibly the guy at TCU – but their success may be due to who they play – but then, again, with the athletes UGA gets if he can coach UP he is a good choice – as would be Stgeele from Clemson, IF they can stop Tech this weekend!) like Bo Pellini was at LSU.

Hopefully, CMR knows who he wants – no all he has to do is “recruit” him.

Saban praises Smart

Published: Wednesday, November 25, 2009 at 5:47 p.m.
Last Modified: Wednesday, November 25, 2009 at 5:47 p.m.
TUSCALOOSA | University of Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart has been named a finalist for the Broyles Award as the nation’s top assistant coach.

The list of 34 assistants will be cut to five finalists on Monday.

“Kirby is an outstanding coach, he’s done a great job for a long time with us. This is the third different place he’s worked with us. I think he’s done a fantastic job with our defense, with our players, with implementing in the game, teaching it on the field, all those things,” said UA coach Nick Saban.

Smart’s unit ranks No. 1 in the nation in total defense (225.2 yards per game), second in rush defense (70.5), fifth in pass defense (154.6) and second in scoring defense (9.9 points per game).

Smart is one of seven Southeastern Conference assistants to reach the field of 34, including Tyrone Nix of Ole Miss, Arkansas’ Paul Petrino, Mississippi State’s John Hevesy, Florida’s Charlie Strong, Kentucky’s Randy Sanders and South Carolina’s Shane Beamer.

“I couldn’t be happier with with what he’s done,” Saban added. “He’s got a great opportunity to continue to grow and develop and be a head coach some day and I think he’s got all the right stuff for that. I think it’s absolutely fantastic that he’s getting some recognition for his hard work and all the efforts and all the great things that he’s done for our program.”

BIO
Dick Bumpas joined TCU in February 2004 as the defensive coordinator and defensive line coach.

Bumpas first worked with Horned Frog coach Gary Patterson at Kansas State in the early 1980s. He was the Wildcats’ defensive line coach in 1981 when Patterson was a senior linebacker. Patterson then became a Kansas State graduate assistant in 1982 and joined Bumpas on staff.

The duo also worked together at Utah State from 1992-94 and at Navy in 1995. At both places, Bumpas was the defensive coordinator while Patterson was the secondary coach.

Bumpas was a 2008 finalist for the Broyles Award as the nation’s top assistant coach. TCU led the nation in total defense (217.8 yards per game), run defense (47.1 yards per game) and fewest first downs allowed per game (12.1) while placing second in scoring defense (11.3 points per game) and sacks (43) and fourth in pass efficiency defense (97.9).

Bumpas mentored Horned Frog defensive end Jerry Hughes into consensus All-America honors and being a finalist for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy and Ted Hendricks Award. Hughes had never played on defense until arriving at TCU.

All four of TCU’s starting defensive linemen in 2008 were named All-MWC. In addition to Hughes being a first-team selection, seniors Cody Moore and defensive end Matt Panfil enjoyed their best seasons in 2008 and were both second-team picks. Defensive tackle James Vess was an honorable-mention choice.

In 2007, Bumpas was ranked by Rivals.com as the seventh-best defensive coach in the nation.

Bumpas coached defensive ends Tommy Blake and Chase Ortiz to first-team All-Mountain West Conference honors in 2005 and 2006. In 2007, Ortiz became TCU’s first three-time first-team all-conference player in 30 years (Mike Renfro, 1975-77). Ortiz signed a free-agent contract with the Cleveland Browns.

The 2006 TCU defense ranked second nationally in run defense (60.8 yards per game) and total defense (234.9 ypg.) while placing third in scoring defense (12.3 points per game).

Bumpas was nominated for the 2005 Frank Broyles National Assistant Coach of the Year award. He was named the Rivals.com National Defensive Coordinator of the Week following the Horned Frogs’ season-opening 17-10 win at Oklahoma. TCU held the Sooners to 225 yards of total offense and the second-lowest point total in coach Bob Stoops’ tenure in Norman.

TCU led the nation in 2005 in turnover margin (+21), interceptions (26) and takeaways (40). The Frogs topped the Mountain West Conference with 41 sacks and allowed just three touchdowns in their final three games, keeping their opponent out of the end zone for 10 quarters from Oct. 29 at San Diego State to the Dec. 31 EV1.net Houston Bowl.

In a coaching career that has spanned 30 years, Bumpas has won championships in four different conferences and coached at all three service academies. He has also coached in 15 bowl games.

Bumpas came to TCU after serving as Western Michigan’s defensive coordinator for one season.

Bumpas worked at the University of Houston from 1999-02, serving as assistant head coach and linebackers coach and later as co-defensive coordinator, installing the 4-2-5 defense in his initial season. Houston finished 25th in the nation in total defense that first year while ranking 20th against the run and 22nd in scoring defense. In 2001, Bumpas coached Wayne Rogers, the Conference USA Co-Defensive Player of the Year.

Prior to his stint at Houston, Bumpas worked four seasons at the U.S. Naval Academy as assistant head coach, defensive coordinator and defensive line coach. His 1997 Navy unit ranked sixth in total defense and turnover margin. At season’s end, he was invited to coach in the Blue-Gray All-Star Game. In 1996, Bumpas’ defense held California to just three second-half points in an Aloha Bowl victory.

Bumpas spent three seasons (1992-94) as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator at Utah State, helping the Aggies to a 1993 Big West Championship and a Las Vegas Bowl victory over Ball State. Other coaching stops include two seasons as defensive line coach at Notre Dame (1990-92), during which time he mentored 1990 Lombardi Award winner Chris Zorich. In 1989, Bumpas coached the defensive line at his alma mater, Arkansas, a team that went on to win a Southwest Conference title and advanced to the 1990 Cotton Bowl.

Bumpas coached seven years in the Volunteer state, splitting time between the University of Tennessee (1985-89) as linebackers coach/special teams coordinator and Tennessee Tech (1983-84) as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator. While with the Vols, Bumpas coached three bowl championship teams (1986 Sugar, 1986 Liberty, 1988 Peach) and was part of the Southeastern Conference championship in 1985.

Bumpas began his collegiate coaching career as a graduate assistant at Arkansas in 1977. From there, he went to the U.S. Military Academy and implemented a new defense under Homer Smith in 1978. Installing new defenses would become a trend for Bumpas, who did the same thing as defensive line coach at the Air Force Academy during a two-year tenure (1979-80) with the Falcons.

A native of Fort Smith, Ark., Bumpas received three varsity letters and was a captain for the Razorbacks. He was named SWC Defensive Player of the Year in 1970, earning consensus All-America honors at defensive tackle. He received a Bachelor’s degree in education from Arkansas in 1973. He went on to play tight end and linebacker professionally for the Memphis Southmen in the World Football League and the British Columbia Lions of the Canadian Football League.

Bumpas was a 2006 inductee into the University of Arkansas Sports Hall of Honor.

Pollak for DE coach, Randall Godfrey for LB coach, and Dick Bumpas from TCU as the D coordinator. He played ball at Arkansas and coached at Tennessee so he knows all about the SEC. Let’s face it, TCU is having a dream season that is more likely a fluke than a sign of things to come in Ft. Worth so he should get while the getting is good.

In today’s era of instant gratification, I understand the calls for the moves that Richt made. While reticent to throw Willie under the bus (I remember winning an SEC championship against LSU with him) I joined those disgruntled fans tired of 40+ point showings by the defense. Turnovers put us in bad spots at times, but the defense has to hold to 3 and we gave up 6 too often.

But these comments from the same people about UGA being a middle of the pack program and how great Alabama is are funny considering two years ago UGA was a potential NC and Alabama was being referred to as a second tier program that could never again achieve the heights reached under Bear Bryant’s leadership.

Kirby Smart to Athens is a “step down”? PLEASE!!!

Georgia is not a big time program, it has only won 62% of the conference games it has played in since 1992. They have only won 2 conference championships since 1992. You people have to understand that you are a third place team.

Being an alum will not get Kirby Smart here. Remember when Pat Dye was coaching at Auburn? He was a UGA grad. Remember Vince Dooley? He was an Auburn grad. The point is – money and timing will determine who c omes here, not some imagined loyalty to a school a coach went to for four years.

TCU DC? Get a grip guys, why would he come to UGA? TCU is in WAY better shape, gets TEXAS talent, and is in a BCS bowl THIS year.

UGA would be a major step down. That guy’s next job is a head coach, not DC for 5th in the SEC East.

Just curious how soon a new DC may be named? I know when the ‘trio’ was fired, they were given the option to stay through the bowl game. So I just wondered if Richt/Evans were already searching for the replacements or will they wait until after the bowl game/season is over to make a decision?
Any thoughts?

Mark,

I had thought of Smart & Tubberville among others but I had completely forgotten about Ellis Johnson. You’re right, he’d make a great DC in Athens. He’s a natural SEC fit and a proven winner. We’ll need to spend some money no matter who we want so why not go for a winner like Smart or Johnson.

Good Calls, Mark – I hope we get one or the other.

“Alabama being a demonstrably better program than Georgia”? Given to hyperbole much? That statement is ridiculous. More tradition – yes. But, this is a program that only became relevant again last year after a decade of nothing. And less than a lateral move? Yeah right – he’s going from being a co-DC (because Saban runs that defense) to an outright DC.

Please get your facts straight.

Not trying to agree with any Tech nerd, but all this talk about the TCU guy is disturbing to me. The guy is 60…60 years old. How much longer before he hangs up his wistle? “Alabama being a demonstrably better program” – I can’t agree with this statement. It’s true that Alabama’s recent teams are significantly ahead of Georgia’s but both football programs are top notch. If I’m not mistaken, the UGA athletic department is one of the nation’s most profitable every year so if they want to pony up the cash for a big name like Smart, they can do it.

Ellis Johnson is FROM SC………..Carolina is LOADED next year, something like 16 starters coming back…..They will be force next year…..He ain’t coming……… I think Spurrier Coach’s 3, maybe 4 more years. Taking the Georgia job has some down side for a “name” guy vs. a no name…..a name guy could lose his name over here……a no name could make a name in Athens………Also, we are tight with money for some reason with assit coach’s salaries…….we are middle of the pack, just like our football team right now. Giving a guy 600-800K blows up the entire pecking order of pay….Bobo….Garner…….what do you pay them? Garner leaving anyway if he’s passed over…………….And I hope he is passed over.

Kirby Smart is not coming to Atlanta. The best option would be Will Muschamp from Texas, but he is not coming either. Bulldog Fans don’t forget that Muschamp also is a former Georgia player and moved up the ranks under Saban in Miami and Tuberville in Auburn, initially starting at Valdosta State where he was DC and Smart was the Defensive Backs coach who took Muschamp’s job only after Muschamp moved on to bigger and better things. I would love to get Charlie Strong, but I don’t think he would come for the same reason Smart and Muschamp won’t come. They are all with better programs right now. Ellis Johnson seems like a good fit, but it seems like status quo. I think Richt will try to ruffle the bushes and go outside the box with his pick. I just hope we get someone with high intensity and tenacity to shut down opposing offensives, not just contain them. The biggest firing was the Special Teams Coordinator. There is no reason for our special teams to be one of the worst in the country with all the talent we bring in. Go get Beamer’s son. I can’t remember where he is, but it would be a good kid to get.

Why in the world would Muschamp and Strong be on this list? What a joke. I could really see Strong leaving Florida for UGA and I’m sure Muschamp would turn down the chance to coach the best program in the country to come back to Georgia. As for Smart, he will end up at Texas when Smart takes over. Need to think a little smaller. Johnson, maybe, or the DC at TCU. Hell this list mine as well have Pete Carroll on it.

No offense, Mark, but I don’t get the idea that Georgia would be a step down from Bama because of program status. I’ve worked in college sports marketing for over 20 years and am a fan of neither team…but it’s pretty well known that Georgia is year-in-year-out, the richest program in the SEC (Along with Florida) and has the best facilities from top to bottom. Program perception may be the case as of this year, but it’s not in the grand scheme of things. All of the top tier SEC teams are on equal footing as far as that is concerned. There are a LOT of reasons why Smart wouldn’t leave Saban’s staff…but the idea of UGA being a step-down definitely isn’t one of them..and I can assure you Kirby doesn’t think that.

No to Kirby Smart. Right now Kirby is just Nick Saban’s apprentice and is not ready to stand on his own two feet as a major defensive coordinator without supervision. Also, Kirby showed no loyalty to his alma mater when he came and worked for Richt one season then bolted. Add to that Kirby knew nothing about tackling when he was a safety at Georgia. He did everything he could to avoid physical contact with the ball carrier.

I’d love Tuberville or Van Gorder but I agree with Mark, that is not going to happen.

I guess this will be a wait and see. But anything, even a UGA sorority girl (at least a KD would be aggressive) would be an improvement over Willie Martinez!

Why was there no change in our strength and conditioning program/coach? We are always out of shape at the start of the season and appear to not be as tough or as strong as other teams. Also, we seemingly have more injuries that linger far too long, or require surgery. Something is wrong with our conditioning program.

Coach Garner doesn’t need to be DC. He is “Asst Head Coach” and the best recruiter in the SEC. I don’t think he feels he has to be DC but I’m sure he wants big-time input on who it will be (and deservedly so).

Mullet has opined: “While Garner is a great recruiter, I think he would have been promoted to a coordinator position long ago if he were capable. If I’m not mistaken, he was a holdover from Donnan’s staff who was retained for his recruiting ability. With that recruiting prowess, it is certain another school would have gone after him for a DC position IF he could handle it. Apparently, his abilities as a recruiter do not translate to a high performance level as a DC.”

Mullet, please understand that, just last off-season, Kiffin and Chizik both made serious “runs” at Garner. I can’t bear the thought of him returning to UT, where he enabled Fulmer to win 10 straight from us with our state’s better players. Richt was correct to retain him, because he has enabled Richt to plug that Big Arnge drain. Kiffin, with his insufferable, spoiled brat’s loud mouth, has vowed NEVER to lose to Georgia again! Chiefly because of that Fulmer string of intolerable wins, Kiffin and his in-bred hillbillies believe it is their right to beat Georgia! They conveniently forget the winning record that Coach Dooley had against the Arnge and the fact that our Bulldogs have put the worst-ever defeats on UT both in Knoxville and on the road. We need to keep Garner away from Auburn and our other rivals too.

Besides that, looking back on CMR’s early years, remember how he blew the time management in the Auburn and/or Tech games his first year and mybe the second–I forget. How can you not already know time management after years as OC at FSC. After looking at the fiasco of the last few years, I’m thinking CMR just isnt that bright and that we will be looking for a new head coach in a year or so, despite whomever is brought in as DC. You know David Greene actually got worse instead of better during his years as QB. Check it out. He was sharp as a tack his first years then almost imperceptively grew more indecisive. Of course it would have helped had the receivers caught at least one ball each game, which is another thing CMR took too long to address. How many years did we go with all those dropped balls. I firmly believe we would have won THe NC one of the first years of CMR’s tenure had those guys caught just a few balls.

Mark-

How can you really say UGA is a step down from Bama. Both programs are top level SEC programs, Bama is ahead of UGA right now but a few years ago, that was reversed. Factor in that Kirby is an alum, his wife played hoops at UGA, most folks say the Bama D is controlled by Saban just like most folks say the Falcons D is controlled by Mike Smith. I am NOT saying Kirby would come back home but to say he wouldn’t because our program is so far behind Bama, that is just plain stupid. We can offer some money Mark-we have a lot of it here. We can offer the chance to be his own coordinator, at his alma mater. Think about it.

It truly amazes me Mark that you and your buddies at the AJC can write about UGA as such a down program, the two years prior were both 10 win seasons. UGA won 7 games this year somehow with the turnover ratio they had that was a miracle in itself-take a look at the teams with similar turnover ratio and see what their record might be. UGA has talent on hand right now, with the SEC east back up for grabs next year, the right DC can do wonders in Athens. I know you guys have to prop Tech up and praise Paul Johnson but state school with the best talent sits in Athens. By the way, I think you need to write a column about Dave Wommack in the future, take a look at how SORRY that defense is especially considering how little they are on the field, they are horrible. But, I know you really don’t want to write anything negative about the Jackets this year, only if they get shredded by Clemson and in their bowl game perhaps.

My thought is that it is going to be someone completely off the radar. Rumor is that Smart and his family want to get back home. Well, home is 45 minutes from Tallahassee and Jimbo Fisher wants Kirby…BAD. They have ties from LSU, so there goes Kirby. My favorite would be Gardner. But, he hasn’t exaclty been very pleasant this season after the whole Auburn thing last year. He got a raise and a promotion that he thought that he deserved and wasn’t very appreciative. I think his time in Athens is almost up. I hate it because he is the MAN when it comes to recruiting. Tenuta? two words….Notre Dame. BVG isn’t going to leave FB to come back. Sure it’s a shorter season, but, the recruiting season is a 365 day a year job. David Polock may be a good D-ends coach. What a lot of people don’t know is that DP and CMR didn’t always get along as well as they showed in front of a camera. I don’t think he is going to coach for Richt and I don’t think Richt wants him to coach for him either. Tubberville may take an assistant’s job, but I don’t really see him sticking around for long. That puts UGA right back in the position we are in now in a year or two.

Most of you talk like every top assistant at every superior program is just salivating over being DC at the mediocre georgia program and live in a trashy, redneck town like Athens (if you haven’t lived there you have no idea how bad it is). Some of you even believe Dungy would like to be a Richt assistant. In all probability they will get some obscure assistant no one ever heard of. Mark Bradley you are indeed a horse’s ass when you make a statement that the Alabama program is demonstraablity better than Georgia’s. Where has the Alabama program been the past ten years? Until last year they were losing to the likes of La. Monroe while Georgia was winning SEC Championships and going to BCS bowls. You remember that don’t you? Or does your memory retention level not expand that far back. Remember you were constantly writing atricles about how great the Georgia program was and Mark Richt was great coach with the perfect temperment for coaching…..What a band wagon reporter you are…you no longer report the news you always feel inclined to stir the pot…. and spin your BS. Belive me the Georgia program is every bit as strong as Bama’s weather you want to believe it or not.CMR will get his defense straighten out and Georgia will be back . You might as well go work at another paper. People in Georgia have long memories…when CMR gets the dawgs back on track I’m sure you’ll write blogs about how you knew it was going to happen and that you think CMR is great, Just like you do now about Tech and CPJ. You are not worth a dime that the AJC pays you…please go back to Kentucky or where ever you came from. I’m not sold on Smart. I think Saban controls alot of what goes on right wherever he is at. I don’t see FSU’s offense lighting it up with Jimbo Fisher, Muschamp- while the media’s darling- seems like everytime I watch a UT game their defense is getting torched. Saban makes that program work and the assistantse flourish with him. Not so sure he would do so well without him. We need someone who can do more with less. Not that we have less talent but I think someone with those skills can really coach up the players. Ellis Johnson would be solid. What about Tyrone Nix or perhaps a uknown from a smaller school? As for Garner, I think he is paid handsomely for his role as a recruiter. That’s what he does well and DC would take away from his time recruiting. He stays in this role and we get a DC who will get us back to traditional good UGA football. As for the Bama quip about being a vastly superior program, hanven’t you learned that in college football things change very quickly. UGA is not that far off the path and could easily be right back to being very competitive with them.

Nemov: I agree with you that both Goff and Donnan helped Fulmer to beat us as much as Garner did. I did not say that Garner’s recruiting for UT was the sole reason that UT owned us for 10 years straight. (It stills hurts.) I lived in TN during those years, and I remember Fulmer talking, year after year, about having “brought in a good harvest down in Georgia.” I just hated Goff’s and Donnan’s inability to stop it–until Donnan made one of his few good moves and hired Garner away. UT has always had to recruit nationwide, because UT’s HS football is lousy. For that reason alone, as Richt knows, we should always have the advantage over UT as long as we can out-recruit the Arnge in our own back yard. If we can out-recruit Kiffin and Oegeron, then we should be OK in doing so against Auburn, Carolina, and Bama. You’re right Nemov, but so am I. Richt cannot afford to lose Garner to Kiffin.

3rd call is Kirby Smart. We made a huge mistake putting him at running backs coach and Richt is pretty good at repenting for past sins.

I always enjoy the coaching “wish lists” that circulate whenever a position is open. This being the Christmas season, I liken it to telling Santa what you want and expecting to get it. You know, like my sister asking one year for a horse that flies. My father laughed years down the road telling us that he almost get her a horsefly and put it in a jar. Anyway, I love UGA but I do not believe the next DC, when named, will cause massive celebration throughout the Bulldog Nation. Let’s face it guys, Tuberville, Muschamp, Smart and their ilk will not leave their present coaching positions to come to UGA. History has taught us that, but here’s a quick recap.

Dooley retires after 25 years and the speculation ran rampant. Many thought Dan Reeves would leave the NFL to come be our head coach. Others thought Terry Donahue would leave UCLA to take the job. Many other “giant” names were floated as well. Who did we get? Ray Goff. Ray Goff, for crying out loud!! He had never been an OC or DC anywhere. Ray Goff. And we know what happened there.

So we get rid of Goff and the best Dooley could come up with was Glen Mason. Glen Mason in the SEC? I remember hearing on Christmas Day that Mason changed his mind and decided to take a pass. That was a great Christmas gift, by the way. So we dip into the D2 ranks and get Jim Donnan. He was entertaining, he could talk a good game, and he could recruit, but he just couldn’t seem to get the winning consistency most expected.

So we get rid of Donnan and name Richt as head coach. I remember many in the Bulldog Nation not being happy with his selection, but things, for the most part, turned out fairly well.

So now we think a huge name will accept the DC position? We never get the huge names when the HEAD COACH job comes open, so why do we expect something different when it comes to the DC? I believe it will be someone who most UGA fans will have no immediate knowledge of his body of work.

Here are the two things I’m taking into consideration. (1) I still trust CMR at this point and expect him to attain a very talented individual to become our new DC. (2) Whoever is selected, it HAS to be an improvement over Martinez.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Dick Bumpas. Scheme sounds a little smoke-and-mirrors to me.

Don’t even consider Garner as DC. Good coaching can make talent play better than it looks on paper. Poor coaching can make super star talent play average. What we do with the talent when it gets to Athens is the key. Regardless, it needs to be somebody who is capable of adaptation during a game and season. Also needs to focus on fundamentals like tackling and discipline on the field.
Smart would be great, but don’t see it happening. He was at UGA and left already. Tuberville would be a mistake as would Muschamp. Need somebody who is willing to be DC for a long time…not somebody who is looking to climb career ladder. I loved BVG, but can’t trust him to stay.

Fud – I don’t know. His success at Tech was welcome during some abysmal years at Tech. It was like a really good cheese on a turd sandwich. Personally, I would like to see someone young, full of piss and vinegar from a D-II or non-AQ who has something to prove. I mean, imagine a DC equivalent of Urban Myer when he came to UF from Utah. New blood. I like CPJ, but it would be good to have someone a bit younger with high energy on the sideline to balance the old man’s old-school offense.

I agree w/ UGA75 hold-heartedly. Richt will search for an up & coming D-cord., probably somewhere at a smaller school where UGA would be a huge step-up, just like he did w/ Vangorder. Richt probably already has someone in mind.

Chavis could be interesting and he’s get a chance to go up against his old school every year. But, you have to know that Richt will try very hard to get someone who matches his principles and philosophies. Evne the best DC may not fit in with our personnel style. Tony Dungy is not coming to Athens so go ahead and get over that pipe dream. I do respect Bama for all they have done in the past and for what they did to get a great coach. However, this insistence that they are leaps a bounds ahead of UGA is laughable. They are not even leaps and bounds ahead of half the SEC. This conference could change gaurds in a moment. Look at how Florida finally changed it in the 90’s when people said they would never win. I think USC gets it done someday, it’s just going to be a long, arduous task.

Plus, Beamer & Bud Foster own the coveted VA Beach recruiting area. There is no need to change. Thinsg are good for them Blacksburg.

I’m a HUGE Tech fan (you may have notice I’m a bit of a pot stirrer), but I really love college football overall and I like to see how changes such as those happening at UGA make an impact. Ever since I was kid, I always associated UGA with defense. I also remember the days of the Swilling bros at Tech(I played against Pat in high school). Both of these schools, Tech and UGA, need a defensive makeover to compete. I love our offense, but we aren’t going to make the jump to contender until we have a defense that can keep the other team’s offense off the field. The same goes for UGA. I have fond memories of watching David Pollack and the UGA defenses of a few years ago and being completely jealous of that kind of dominance (I think David Pollack is a real class act). Good luck to y’all in your search. I’m hoping we get some of the same at Tech following the ACCCG (which we may lose because of defense) and our bowl game.

We all have them…..Yes, Bama has a great history with the Bear, but damn, they had 10-12 years when nothing was a given. Stalling was great coach….I got to meet him last year. But we all go through cycles. Georgia is in one now. I’m ready to see what Florida does next year. They looked beatable( not to us) a lot this year, a they lose their heart(Tebow) and a lot of D. I like Bradley’s thinking. I’d be happy with Smart or Ellis Johnson, who’s defense is the only reason S. Carolina stays on the winning side of .500. And please, don’t even mention Tenuta.

But I think our chances at Smart are better than you think. The chance to work for Richt, for your alma mater, for a program you probably believe should be able to compete with Alabama, and getting solo credit for the D — those are mighty good incentives. If it just depends on how much more dough Bama will put up to keep him, then our chances are probably a good 50-50.

If Bama wins Saturday, we’d probably need to give him till after the BCS championship game to decide.

Let me clear up one misunderstanding. Ellis Johnson has coached up the 2,3 and 4 star talent to the 3rd best defense in the SEC.

His shelf will not be empty next season (or the season after) as SCAR is the 2nd youngest team in the league. SCAR will compete for the SEC EAST crown next year plus Johnson is a SCAR native so there is a very small chance the he would leave.

Why would any coach (or recruit) come to an underacheiving school like UGA that has the talent (NFL type) but can’t meet expectations?

Never Missed a coach needs to be able to call the right defense that puts the players in position to make the play. They also have to drill into them that making the tackle is more important than being on Sports Center.

We need some one that will put a boot up their @$$ for all of these retarded penalties. I’m sick and tired of the sloppy play on both sides of the ball for the Dawgs.

redandblackblood – the money is there, but I wonder if it’s a PR problem? With budget cuts in every aspect of education going on in the state, some people will question spending a huge sum on football coaches. You and I know that the money is separate and that athletics dollars are not state dollars; however, the majority of population is completely ignorant to that fact and would probably raise hell about it. Again, they could pay it, but they would have to do so behind a good public relations push.

In the last 3 years Georgia is 28-10 with a #2 and #10 finish and Sugar Bowl and Capital One Bowl Wins!!!!!

Georgia has also won 2 SEC titles and played for a 3rd in the past 8 years and BAMA hasn’t won one in 20 years!

There are two defensive coachs out there for CMR to consider that we have not discussed. CMR has a choice to hire either Jeff Schultz or Mark Bradley. Based on their weekly blogs and articles, these two guys know alot about football and how a dominant defense should function. They know how to motivate 18 to 22 year olds each and every week. They even know how to make adjustments throughout the game to stop the oppossing offense. No other candidate out there can match Jeff or Mark expectations for Georgia.

What is it with the SEC. Tuberville has had two head coaching jobs, Saban, Spurrier, Miles. I know this is the south but incest is not best. How does a league with all the muscle have so little imagination. When they do develop a great assistant like Muschamp they let Texas kidnap him. Georgia can recruit without any super star recruiter what they need to do is coach up what they recruit. They need a disciplinarian first to set the tone. There is a team theme here of being the most penalized team in the SEC. And the penalties are just the by product of a rogue group of 11 all operating off an individual and selfish agenda. Noticed the improvement in the Tech game, only with a gun at the head of the assistant did disciple finally enter the equation. It is more fun to play loose, talk trash, and make it all about entertaining your teammates instead of winning. Get out of the SEC fraternity, get somebody that thinks he has a future and won’t allow some punked out kid to destroy that future. Get someone with energy but is rational and mature. Look at a Tommy Spangler
at La. Tech an excellent Georgia grad with a resume. You know Dooley knows how to pick an defensive coordinator. Joe Tresey at South Florida is another. Great defensive backfield coach which is Georgia strength.

The wildcard in this issue is Adams. He makes all decisions regarding the University of Georgia down to who works in the mailroom. Recall Adams hiring his pal, Jim Harrick, over Dooley’s recommendation, and see where that got us. Earlier this year, Adams had to dig deep to find a basketball coach who would put up with his micromanagement. How is that one working out? Do not expect to see an established defensive coordinator show up at UGA. Next year, Adams patron and protector, Sonny the Stooge, will be out, and perhaps the legislature can restructure the Board of Regents and send Michael to his villa in Italy.

Speaking of UNDERACHIEVERS, why don’t you go get a job. You’re umemployed FOR A REASON—you can’t achieve jack. That’s why you’ve been posting here for over 4 hours. Coach Richt has 80 wins in 8 years, name all the coaches, all-time who ACHIEVED that loser! Who has coached up 2 Hesiman winners? None of your negative posts worked against Ga Tech. You wasted hundreds of hours. You are wasting your life on a blog–think about that. Your prophecies were ALL WRONG about Ga Tech! Your prohecies about Mark Richt have all been wrong. You make fun of Richt’s religion, curse him, his wife, and accuse him of racism. No wonder you get fired so often! Classy man, nice.

WOW! I am truly amazed that Mark Richt made the right decision to unload substandard coordinators that were holding this program back. I believe UGA should exhaust all options and get the very best DC available. If that means going after Smart, Muschamp, Strong, and giving them whatever they want, do it. It’s time for Richt to put his big boy pants own and take ownership of his program. He has been too lenient/loyal for several years and now it’s time to make it happen.

Try to bend stats however you want

Now you only want to include “regular season wins” and BAMA’s ONE WIN over UGA last year

Football is more than just this year and last year my friend

UGA is 1-1 vs Bama since Saban got there…and Richt is 3-1 vs Bama overall

Do and say what you want but all wins and losses count…I know you don’t want to recall that UTAH whipping BUT the fact is it counts

Now you want to count “division championships” LOL! Win an SEC title

You know the thing UGA has done 2 times and played for 3 times

How was Bama soooooo much better than UGA last year? Bama lost 2 games, UGA lost 3?

The FACT is there is only a 2 game difference in records over the past 3 years and UGA has won a Sugar and Capital one bowl while Bama has won ZERO Bowls

December 3rd, 2009

It seems the general impression is that Muschamp is off the radar because he is a coach-in-waiting. Does Will Muschamp really desire to wait until Mack Brown retires to become a head coach? I have read that there are 7 years left on the contract making him 65 years old at that time. I doubt he retires then. Given our desire to have someone who will bring fire to the defensive side of the ball, we should consider Muschamp a serious target. He may not want the job, but we need to be aggressive in pursuing former players to coach at UGA.

The reason Dungy is a possibility is he doesn’t want the stresses that come with being a head coach (media, public appearances, coordinating staff schedules, etc.) but he LOVES teaching and molding young men. The atmosphere that Richt has set up at UGA falls right in line with Dungy’s values. Dungy wants to be able to “retire” but loves coaching. Being a DC at a solid program where he would be loved by the masses without as many demands as a head coach (College or NFL) and get a pretty good salary to pay the bills isn’t an unattractive deal.

Mark,
We agree on two things – that EJ is the among the best coordinators, if not THE best in the SEC, and that Georgia ought to consider him. Heck, maybe they could get him…but only if they were to double his salary. What I can’t let pass w/o comment is the perplexing notion that USC always will have a ceiling in the SEC. True, if that ceiling is #1. You and UGA’s heads-in-the-sand fan base may not have noticed that it’s no longer a few years ago, and USC has now pulled even with Georgia. Count the win IN ATHENS this year as a technical victory, but who really was the best team that day? As for the rest of the year, I’ll objectively admit to a dead heat among the two: one team definitely on the way up and another team treading water. (Some UGA fans are so arrogant, they probally think I’m actually referring to the Dawgs as the former, not the latter.) UGA continues to recruit well, no doubt. But if anyone wants the potential of UGA’s last two classes over the proof that SC’s ‘08 and ‘09 recruits are extraordinarily talented …let’s just say the logical choice is to take take the bird (or gamecock) in the hand over two dawgs in the bush. And this year’s recruiting at SC, already in the Top 15 at SC, should pull even with the dawgs when all is said and done, and will end up being coached up at a program, including EJ, that has now closed the former gap and could easily pull ahead. You must know Spurrier well enough to know he sees what every rational fan and non-fan can forecast, that the Gamecocks will compete with anyone in 2010 and it’s only going to get better. Think anyone with Spurrier’s ego is going to walk away in the middle of that kind of emerging success? C’mon. Finishing first in the SEC is an unlikelihood for 10 of the 12 teams in the SEC for the next year or so, but to say the future has a ceiling for Carolina.? Dude, that’s not crazy…that’s certifiably insane. Among the other ten teams, our “ceiling” is higher than most and lower than no one else’s, especially since Georgia can’t even see such a ceiling as they continue to dig themselves a hole.

When you work with friends, your judgement gets clouded and you will tolerate more than you have too. I hope CMR finds someone that he doesn’t know and keep it strictly business. Give me a break Mark! I usually enjoy your stuff but to say that UGA is a move downward from Alabama is a stretch. Granted they are on top of the conference at the moment but from ‘02 to ‘05 we were that team (caviat being Florida was and is still our “daddy”). UGA has the same money base (I would argue best in the SEC), facilities and recruiting base on par with the best in the land. Besides we’ve played once in the past 3 years (current regimes) and are 1 and 1 with the Tide. Smart is a Georgia guy. I don’t buy that he is emotionally tied to Saban. If he has success at UGA the head coaching job offers will come the same as they would at Alabama, and as quickly. UGA can match or beat any money or title Alabama gives him. I do like Ellis Johnson as well so kudos to your two choices.

Mark, Usually I would agree DC at Bama is a better job than DC at UGA. Defense is a top concern at Bama and Bama had a 10 win season with scholarship limits.

However, Smart moving to UGA would be a promotion. Why? He gets to take credit for the defense and gets to speak to the press (which he can not now). Smart has stated he wants to be a HC, at some point you have to move out on your and make a name. UGA can be that place.

For those that say Smart is a glorified Grad Assist. every interview you hear Saban speak of Smart, he is a hard worker who understands Saban’s complex scheme. If he understands Saban’s scheme he has a head start on majority of the other coaches his age. Saban has also gone out of his way to keep Smart with him which says alot.

The fact of the matter is that neither UGA or GT has bragging rights in regard to a NC when it comes to the likes of FLA, Bama, Miami, et al. UGA has had more opportunities and has hit some real bad luck (Shockley’s injury comes to mind) and has suffered from some serious coaching miscues (imagine what those Stafford/Moreno teams could have done with more coached discipline and a stronger DC). Tech … well, we still have a lot of mountain to climb before we’re even in the conversation.

Do you think he might be playing it like Charlie Strong is doing at Florida, and wait around and build your name up to be the best in the nation, and then wait for the right head coaching job, and not just any coaching job.

Everyone always says how amazed they are that Charlie Strong isn’t a head coach by now. Maybe he was just waiting for the right time to leave, and the right job.

I’m shocked that Bobo was left in place. I just read that the Tech game saved his job. If that were the case Willie would still be in town. Ga’s D held Tech to one of its lowest pt totals all year, while Vandy and Miss St scored more points than we did against them??????…….Just who exactly is our QB’s coach? Why wasn’t his a$$ canned? The games our D played good in our offense couldn’t get out of their own way to score. Too many O penalties and turnovers to overcome. The games our D wasn’t so great in our O still had too many penalties and turnovers to overcome. Things will not change if Bobo the clown continues on at GA. If I were Willie I would have sucker punched that little candy a$$ excuse of an O coor. GA needs a QB coach, someone who can teach a kid to take care of the ball and how to throw the freakin slant and over the middle to Orson Charles………..Just how many turnovers have we had the last two years. I can’t remember when the last times was that we turned the ball over so much. I heard the Richt quote that they were doing every things they could in practice to remedy it. How about calling better plays and not the same plays that worked once and then twice and then you thought they would work again ( the dump off 5 yards over the middle to the TB, intercepted twice by Kentucky) brilliant Bobo and Cox. Both get equal credit there. PLEASE STOP RUNNING THE REVERSE! Everyone knows your going to run it once a game. ONCE AGAIN GA IS LOOKING FOR A DEFENSE TO SAVE ITS FLOUNDERING OFFENSE.

OK, One of the main reasons that Adams and Dooley hired Richt was becasue he had a track record of beating Fl when he was at FSU. If he could beat Fl, then he could beat the rest of the schedule. Hadn’t quite worked out that way (the Fl part) but the other has tured out well except for this year. Those of us watching the Ga vs WVU bowl game knew that Martinez would get canned eventually. Richt should go back to the premise that got him hired, find a DC that can stop Fl. That’s not an easy task, but it’s not impossible. Dangerous – I was also a little surprised that no moves were made on offense. Like you, I’m also concerned about the QBs coach. We’ll start next spring with two redshirt freshman QBs. If we cannot coach them up, then we could be in trouble.

One last thing – what always troubled me about Martinez and Bobo is that virtually NO colleges ever approached UGA about interviewing them for a job. Granted, Martinez had his name thrown around Miami, but I think a large part of it was the fact that he was a former Miami player.

Billy Ray Valentine – that’s the big question with Spangler, and we’ll never know unless he becomes the new DC. He does offer ties to UGA, the state, and should be able to recruit the area well.

I haven’t bothered to research his history, but when Richt named VanGorder, a lot of Bulldog fans were going “who?”. Now everyone seems to miss him. I don’t think he was the DC at a major program when he came to UGA so who knows what would happen with Spangler.

Also, what’s the fascination with Muschamp? Granted, he performed well for Saban, but in my opinion, the Texas defense is porous and I haven’t seen much improvement in the last 2 or 3 years.

As much as the Bama fans want it to be true, UGA’s not a step down for Kirby. It’s his and Mary Beth’s alma mater, and just a few short years ago UGA was well above Bama in the national landscape’s pecking order.

We’re also going to open the checkbook, so Saban is going to have a fight on his hands if Richt zeroes in on him. Count on it.

I think I’d still rather have VG, who’s romored to not as happy in Flowery Branch as this story indicates. Smith’s a tough man to work for, evidently, and the days are long for the NFL coaches. VG still tells people Athens is ‘home’, so you never know. Think his daughter is there currently, and his son played ball there in recent years.

All you Bama fans, let’s look at the facts before Saban, since you all have… well Alabama Redneck Brains! ‘01Independence Bowl, ‘02 no bowl, ‘03 no bowl, ‘04 Music city, ‘05 Cotton Bowl(decent), ‘06 Independence(again) ‘07Independence(again) with a 6-6 record. In that same span, UGA ‘01 Outback, ‘02 Sugar, ‘03 Capital One, ‘04Outback, ‘05 Sugar, ‘06 Chick Fil-A, ‘07 Sugar. Now really the only thing you have is “Da Bear” memories, and Like Elvis, the Bear is Dead! The only “real” coach you’ve had before Saban was Gene Stallings. Did you forget M.Shula, M. DuBose, M. Price( the strip joint maniac)? So before you get on here talking about how good you are, let’s not forget recent history, because truth be told ya’ll aint did Squat this decade! Unless you’re from FLA, or LSU you can’t even measure up to the dogs. NOW THAT IS THE FACTS!!!

Couple of way off the wall suggestions. 1. Garry Gibbs, did a great job rescuing Georgia after the Ramsey disaster. Thought Richt should have kept him on, don’t know where he is now. 2. After Kirby Smart and Will Muschamp turned out so well, track down Scott Woerner and see if he is interested in getting into some serious football. He was better than the other two as a player, maybe as a coach.

Dangerous – I agree an inept offense can be a defense’s worst nightmare, but rather than looking at points allowed (pick 6s come to mind) to judge a defense, look at yards allowed. I hate it when the offense fumbles the ball, but if the defense then allows the opponents to march 68 yards down the field for a TD, then that is the responsibility of the D. I believe before the tech game UGA was allowing about 330 yards per game. Unacceptable. Just my thoughts.

Richt needs to go to Miami and talk to the Hurricanes DC. He came up with a good plan to really slow down UF last year and hammered GT with his scheme. Then go to UNC and talk to Butch Davis’s DC….. Kirby Smart may want to come here to show everyone he doesn’t need Saban’s help on defense. I’d rather see someone younger than Tenuta. Heck, go look at the top 10 defenses and go after one of them….

Falcons 34

The hot name is Kirby Smart, and even though he did play at UGA and is from Georgia, there are several things working against him wanting to leave Alabama:

1) He has his players in place after 2 stellar recruiting classes of guys HE wanted (at least in part) for his defense.

2) If Saban and Co. wants him to stay, then Bama has no problem forking over the dough (see Saban’s current contract) and they simply won’t let him walk to another competition in the SEC (albeit the SEC East)

3) They are smack dab in the middle of the National Championship hunt and if they win on saturday you can bet that all he’ll be thinking about is winning the Title, no other distractions. Its unlikely that Richt or any team for that matter would wait on the “possibility” that someone “may” come be your D-Coordinator until after the National Championship. This would leave less than one month until Signing Day.

4) School loyalty is not what it once was, as evidenced by Stacy Searels and Rodney Garner just to name a few. Both of their schools (Auburn) pursued them badly to return back home and they chose not to.

5) As much as we UGA fans would hate to admit it, this would be a lateral move at best and a step down at worst for Smart. Under Saban, Bama has two undefeated regular seasons in the SEC and been in the dead-middle of the National Title hunt come SEC Championship Weekend.

Just don’t see it happening ya’ll. Unless they would pull something like that “Coach in Waiting” crap and we see how well that worked out @ FSU.

My gut is that Richt will pull a fairly unknown from a smaller school the same way he did with Van Gorder (Western Illinois & Central Michigan) and that worked out pretty well. But keep this name as a feather in your cap………Marvin Sanders

Marvin Sanders – D-Coordinator @ North Carolina
Past 3 Seasons
National Defensive Ranks This Year
Total Defense – 6th
Rush Defense – 9th
Pass Defense – 14th
Scoring Defense – 14th
Passes Intercepted – 7th
Pass Efficiency Defense – 11th
Tackles for Loss – 3rd
Sacks – Tied 28th (difference between 28th & Top 10 is 5 sacks)
First Downs Defense – 8th
3rd Down Conversion % – 3rd

Granted, UNC plays in the ACC, but most times his defense is in company with the best in biz like Florida, Texas, TCU, and Penn State. The guy is 40 years old and this would DEFINITELY be a step up. Just food for thought.

Hate to break this to you, Mark, but the talent level on USC’s defense is now equal to or superior to that of UGA’s. Despite being decimated by injuries (at one point three of three four DTs on the two-deep, starting MLB, starting DE, et al.) and starting up to four true freshmen on defense, the Gamecocks were quite respectable on the defensive side of the ball this year. They return nine starters for next year and will likely be one of the top 3 defenses in the conference for the foreseeable future because everyone is young and coming back.

Not saying that Ellis Johnson couldn’t be swayed to leave, but you also need to understand that he’s a SC native (grew up in Winnsboro if I recall correctly, which is just outside of Columbia), his wife is from here, and he has coached a lion’s share of his career at USC and Clemson. Also, Spurrier is about to ink an extension, and he has consistently said that he will be at USC another 4-5 years if not longer… no reason to believe that he’s lying.

Because it involves UGA, it’s clearly none of my business or concern but I’d like to share a little history lesson for the readers.

During the Civil War, there was a Union commander that had fallen out of favor with many around the nation (and please forgive me for not remembering who this particular general was). Even within Abraham Lincoln’s cabinet, this general was marked for dismissal. When the President was told by his own cabinet that a change was needed, Lincoln more or less asked “who would be a better choice?”.

The person replied, “Anybody.”

Lincoln then asnwered, “ANYBODY will do for you. I must have SOMEBODY.”

I can’t disagree with the dismissal of Martinez but for Georgia’s sake I hope they have somebody in mind as opposed to anybody.

Fire sorry aise Richt

But the best coach Georgia could get to replace Richt would be Charlie Strong. Richt can then go back to FSU and try to turn that ship around.

Hiring Charlie Strong (Florida’s defensive coordinator) would kill two birds with one stone. We would be taking one of the biggest reasons for Florida’s recent success away from them. It’s their defense that’s winning them SEC championships.

Right now, it’s obvious that Georgia is a poorly coached team.

1.They recruited a bunch of weanies on both lines of scrimmage that got pushed around by everyone they’ve played so far.

2. The strength program doesn’t seem to be developing anyone.

3. They come close to leading the nation in penalties–a problem that’s been festering since 2007.

4. They come close to leading the nation in negative turnover ratio–a problem that goes back to the middle of last season.

5. It looks like they’ve got no game plan on either side of the ball.

6. They’re making poor play calling decisions. For example they had a 2nd and two at mid-field when the game was still winnable, and they lined up in the spread and threw two incompletions.

7. And now, they’re showing poor tackling and blocking techniques.

8. No one on special teams understands the touchback rule.

It’s the fundamentals. It looks like no one’s teaching these guys the basic skills.

For those who keep coming on our board asking what UGA has done, check out the all time winningest college football programs. You will find UGA 11th on the list behind USC (and third in the SEC behind Alabama and Tenn). UGA has a long tradition of winning. And GT is 16th on the all time list.

In 1941 Alabama finished 3rd. in the SEC, and 20th in the final poll of the season. Same for the “34″, “30″, “25″, “26″ seasons. But even with all of this, you still have more NC’c than UGa. As if the Ugay DC title is the most coveted coaching position in the country. This is a joke. And what is that about Ugay having more defensive talent than USC? USC had a top ten defense because it had players like Norwood, Gilmore, and Matthews. There is no one in the country, other than you, that would take Ugay’s defense over USC’s. It doesn’t matter who’s coaching. You shouldn’t be allowed to write about SEC football.

As of 2006, the University of Georgia Athletic Association comprises 19 intercollegiate teams, over 500 student-athletes, a $65 million budget and a 250 person staff. For fiscal 2005, the Athletic Association had the largest operating profit among collegiate athletic programs at US$23.9 Million from a gross profit of US$68.8 Million. Here’s a question worth asking the Dawg Nation.

Would you support Richt promoting Rodney Garner to DC?

Personally, I’d like to see Richt bring in a new DC and assistant coaches, even if it means losing Garner. IMO, we need new blood and a new approach to our defense. Without a significantly improved defense we can forget about winning any SEC Championships in the near future. Five star prima donnas don’t guarantee Championships and as much as recruiting is the cornerstone of a good program, equally as important is great coaching.

Mark Richt has 89W-27L not too shabby…..2-1 in sec championship and i highly doubt an SEC championship 5 years after Donnan had been gone had anything to do with him….whes the last time Alabama won an sec championship?

smart is the knee-jerk decision, but what guarantee do we have that he has anything to do with the defensive scheme at Bama. He needs to move somewhere else, away from Saban to prove he knows what he is doing, and not being a puppet. I don’t think anyone on this list takes this job. Better program or not, Ellis Johnson isn’t going to move laterally…rarely happens in the SEC without a HC change accompanying it.

ok for the Ellis Johnson statement. its never going to happen. he was born in south carolina, he is a columbia native. graduated from the citadel. and has been coaching all over south carolina from the high school level to D1. yes he has coached around the southeast as well but columbia is more than likely going to be his final home. the south carolina defense is only going to get better with him there, and with the immense amount of talented freshmen and sophmores on the defense you can bet he’s more than excited about whats to come at south carolina.

Surprising no one mentions REGGIE HERRING. He’s possibly the most distinguished DC in college football, but alludes the eyes of the masses. He’s a private person, who doesn’t receive the media attention of Smart, Johnson, Amato, or even Tommy West. Ask these coaches about my assertion…doubt they’d dispute. Chuck Amato had the number 1 defense in the nation earlier this decade…but guess who the DC was? And guess who left the next year to join Houston Nutt, where they together put Ark. back on the map (beating both LSU and Florida during the regular seasons of their respective national championships)? Guess who was responsible for the strong defense that West had during his stay at Clemson? Guess who was one of the only two coaches asked to stay after West was FIRED at Clemson? The same man that has been out of the college football picture for the last two years, due to his employment with the DALLAS COWBOYS for the past two years? Guess who happens to be the husband of my mom’s sister? …REGGIE HERRING. We better get him before Tech does, because will leave Dallas for either.

News Flash… The Ramblin Rectums play Clemson saturday in the A-she-she bowl…

Tech fans are being schooled on how to respond to a loss…
1. Change the subject to academics
2. Insist that we almost won…
3. Insist we would have won if they had played fair
4. Insist we were about to win but time ran out
5. Pretend like the game was not important
6. Pretend we won 4 NCs
7. Call the opposing fans rednecks
8. Insist we make more money
9. Pretend a 10 and 2 record in the A-SHE SHE conference is a real accomplishment
10. Call the other players thugs…

If none of that works, change you pen name and start over as someone else… use the same excuses
5.

Smart was in Athens all day yesterday if that says anything.

What it says is this is BS. Bama is preparing for their championship game and he did not leave the team to ’spend all day in Athens’.

Glenn,
I agree that Bumpas would be an excellent choice, but what are you, his friggin agent?

Geez, why didn’t you just cut and paste his bio from TCU’s media guide? Relax your pinkies a little, dude.

I heard that the DC from Pitt has been scheduled for an interview. Anyone know anything about that?

YES on BVG (but he won’t come)
YES on Smart (but he won’t come)
YES on Bumpas (but he won’t come)

I think it’s probably going to be a DC from a smaller school. Probably end up being somebody we’ve never heard of.

Ruffin McNeil at Texas Tech is probably one of the best kept secrets in football. Their defense was terrible before he took over and in my opinion he has more than held his own the past two years with Muschamp, who has vastly better talent to work with.

I really like Muschamp, a DGD if ever there was one, but I sense that he’s a little overrated as a defensive coordinator. UT’s OFFENSIVE coordinator should be the hottest property in college football, but for some reason Muschamp is the media darling.

Alabama is a better team but NOT an better program than Georgia. Mark, you sound like a fool when you say Alabama is a demonstrably better program. There is more to a program than just the # of national championships. There is a right way, a wrong way and a better way and UGA football is the better way.
