Paul Johnson and Josh Nesbitt can still be champions. (AJC photo by Johnny Crawford)
I had this conversation with a Georgia Tech booster last night: If Paul Johnson had to pick between beating Georgia and winning the 2009 ACC title, which would have chosen?
“As fans, we’d always pick beating Georgia,” the booster said. But that’s from the fan’s perspective, which isn’t the same as a coach’s. And if I had to guess — and I don’t have to guess, but just for grins I will — I’d say PJ would take being the champion of a BCS conference. (Yeah, yeah. Even if it is only the ACC.)
I base this on something PJ said last week about beating Georgia — “Been there, done that” — and on his stated desire to win championships at Tech. “We almost did it last year,” he said, and the Jackets did. They shared first place in the Coastal Division but lost to Virginia Tech on a tiebreaker. And now the moment is here. Beat Clemson in Tampa and the Jackets will play in the Orange Bowl in Year 2 under Paul Johnson. And that’s pretty darn impressive even if they did lose to the hated mutts.
A year ago, I think PJ would have chosen the other course: He needed to beat Georgia to establish credibility among his constituency. And that had to come first lest he run the risk of turning into Chan Gailey. (Who was fired because he couldn’t beat Georgia, fired 51 weeks after he played for the ACC title in Jacksonville.) Having done the deed in Year 1, Johnson has more global goals.
Which is why, I submit, he talked down the rivalry last week. (Indeed, he came tantalizingly close to channeling Reggie Ball and saying of Georgia: “It’s just a game, dog.”) PJ said this flat-out: “I’m going to get Georgia Tech to the point where our program is bigger than one game.”
Georgia fans will crow that the ACC title game now holds no currency, but that’s not true. (The Tech fan’s comeback: “So who are you playing this week?”) Tech was the best team in its conference, which isn’t to be confused with the SEC but isn’t the New York-Penn League, either. And that was the Jackets’ stated goal from spring practice on — win the ACC.
Remember Tech’s rings from last season? They weren’t presented for beating Georgia, although they did bear the famous score. (I’m pretty sure this year’s rings won’t be engraved with “30-24.”) The rings were for tying for the Coastal title. This year GT and PJ don’t have to share a division with anyone. This year they can win the whole conference. And I’m thinking, in this coach’s mind, that was Job 1 all along.

well I see all those top five recruiting class, 5 loss unranked bull pup fans, are back bragging about barely beating that little ol team from the ACC which beat the mighty dogs in their own house last year. Yes they did get heckled about that game just like they have always heckled the fans of any team they have ever beaten. If they had shown some class in their loss last year they might have been shown some this year in their victory. They did not acknowledge our victory last year so I am not going to acknowledge theirs this year

Sav Jacket…and you ran on a bad defense as well.I hope they fire Willie.
My question…who have you beaten. Is Va. Tech your ” signature win”?
We dont have to stand behind anyone. 8 of the last 9 years we have beaten tech.Yeah your 10-2 and you STILL have not beaten anyone. But I will say this…Johnson is a great coach.I wish he would go to notre Dame, so we would not have to see him on the other sideline. But that will never happen.
Oh my… caleb king just score anyone touchdown. At least last year the Dawgs hit Rodney Jones…your defense is so bad you let our 2nd string back run up the middle untouched.
363 days of hell, Tech folks. 363 days of hell.

Bradley I am a bit disappointed that you and Shultz have yet to eat a little crow. You have been propping up Paul Johnson all year….one of the finest coaches in the land..best playcaller in the game? How about a few of Bradley’s gems….”Georgia has a problem. Actually, Georgia has several problems, but for today we’ll concern ourselves with one. His name is Paul Johnson. He coaches Georgia Tech. And he continues to prove just how much of a difference one determined man can make.”Oh yeah? How about this one”The Jackets yielded 44 points and 539 yards to Florida State on Saturday. Difference was, Tech won. Tech had the strength of will — a strength fueled by its coach — to keep fighting. Georgia got a bad call for excessive celebration against LSU and seized it as that week’s excuse. Tech and Johnson accept no excuses. You fumble the ball, you go get it back”.Want some more?….”Georgia Tech will fight until the last dog dies”.

I’d say from the comments from all the Tech haters on here that the game meant a hell of a lot more to them than it did last year. I recall many if not most of the UGAY fans last year saying that the game wasn’t that big of a deal, that it wasn’t a rivalry if it wasn’t competitive any longer, etc., etc.,etc.
My oh my, how things have changed. Why might this be, one might ask? Because, after last year’s game, it suddenly did become competitive again, and after the season Tech had this year and the season UGAY had this year, it looked as though UGAY might be the team continually sucking hind ### from here on out.
Suffice it to say that although UGAY prevailed in the contest, and did dominate on the O-line, that’s the only place they dominated. And near the end of the game, after UGAY missed the long field goal attempt and gave us good field position, every UGAY fan was quaking in their boots because their beloved BullPUPS had not been able to stop Tech’s ground game in the second half (21 points). Only some bad playcalling in the final series saved UGAY from continuing to suck hind ###.
A six-point win in a rivalry game is not total domination. And why in the world would you gloat over what all you UGAY bandwagon fans consider to be an inferior football team in an inferior football conference anyway??????? Could it be that it actually was truly more important for your personal self esteem than you would ever want to admit?????? Could it be that you believed that your beloved BullPUPS were on the verge of IRRELEVANCE?????? And that, by extension, you yourselves, individually, were on the verge of IRRELEVANCE??????
Have a nice life, suckers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am loving all the excuses on why Tech lost, and how all the sudden this game was not a big deal because they have their eye on bigger things. That may be true to some extent, but let’s be realistic, they had rings made last year after this game. You guys can kid yourself all you want about this not being a big deal, and maybe it’s not since you have lost 8 out of the last nine and only won 3 times in like 20 years then I can sympathize with you. I had to read all the crap that was flooding these boards for a whole year and it’s just sweet to know order is restored. Good luck in the ACC championship game. 30-24 GO DAWGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

History is a wonderful thing and from that you can only learn so much. As a tech fan, sure the loss to Georgia hurts. Any loss hurts (Georgia fans can think about Kentucky this year). Jackets have two more games to play and those are in front. Start with the ACC title game and move on from there. So is it better have your team in your conference title game or just watch two other better teams in your conference title game?

Thank you, Psychologist Alan. Such insight. I’m soooo impressed. Too bad your argument is full of crap. Take a seat on the couch please.
You first paragraph (…based on all the Tech haters…). A lot of fans DID say the tech game was no longer much of a rivalry, and why should they? After 7 consecutive wins, it’s hard to view that team as a competitive rival. I’m sure UF feels the same way about us.
Your second paragraph (…things have changed.). You’re right, they have. Tech fans walk around pumping out their chest about their coming dominance in the conference and state. Well, the state thing didn’t work out for you too well this year now did it? Regarding the conference – big whoop. The A She She is pathetic. The SEC pits #1 versus #2 while the A She She offers a rematch between #10 and a team that is not even in the top 25. Yawn! To add insult to injury, both got whacked by their in-state rivals, two middle of the road SEC teams.
Your third paragraph. We “only” dominated the O-line? BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! Not only did we dominate the O-line, our D-line made mince meat of your O-line (205 yards rushing for the tech juggernaut running game), and our running backs far outplayed your running backs (Dwyer and Jones COMBINED equalled LESS than half of EITHER of our two backs). Nice try, though.
Your fourth paragraph. Tech IS an inferior team playing in an inferior conference. I listened to ESPN do a weekend recap last night and the consensus was that the A She She “embarassed” itself, and they are hardly the UGA “bandwagon” fans you so disdain. And speaking of bandwagon fans, your wagon emptied likes rats deserting a sinking ship after Saturday night.
Now, using your stated logic, if we had lost the game, making it two in a row, we would have become irrelevant. So what does that make tech, losers of 8 of the last 9? I’ll help you out with this one …… irrelevant! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
Your pontificating only magnifies your inferiority complex and delusional nature. I feel sorry for you, so this one’s on the house. Now, your time’s up……NEXT.

No excuses here. We got beat, fair and square. UGA had their best game of the year, by far, and suffice it to say, GT did not. Congrats to UGA and thanks to those alum who post with class, from both sides. The rest I try to ignore.
I get a laugh out of those that think one win proves anything other than who had the best team on the field on any given afternoon/night. How might that logic be applied to a loss to UK at home? All it proves is that any team can get beaten by any other team depending on FOCUS and EXECUTION, which UGA had more of last Saturday night.
This game was a major disappointment, but we need to move on and focus on Clemson. I think the UGA game definitely means more if we were not getting ready to play in the ACC Championship since the last time I checked, the winner goes to the Orange Bowl. We still control our own destiny with respect to what bowl we go to. Win and we will go to the Orange, lose and we do to the Chick-fil-a or, more likely the Gator. That would not have changed whether we won or lost against UGA.
GT needs to solve it’s defensive problems, but not sure if they can do that with the personnel currently available to them. We’ll see, but I expect more focus and better execution in Tampa.
I wish there was a way to filter out comments by certain URL’s because there are comments from both team’s fans that are just a waste of time.
Clemson keeps pointing out how long it has been since they have won an ACC Championship. I would argue that it’s been a long time for GT as well. We need to start out the game playing better than we have this year or they are going to stuff it down our throats just like UGA did. The previous meeting doesn’t mean anything.
GO JACKETS !!! FOCUS and EXECUTE.
