Paul Johnson and Josh Nesbitt can still be champions. (AJC photo by Johnny Crawford)
I had this conversation with a Georgia Tech booster last night: If Paul Johnson had to pick between beating Georgia and winning the 2009 ACC title, which would have chosen?
“As fans, we’d always pick beating Georgia,” the booster said. But that’s from the fan’s perspective, which isn’t the same as a coach’s. And if I had to guess — and I don’t have to guess, but just for grins I will — I’d say PJ would take being the champion of a BCS conference. (Yeah, yeah. Even if it is only the ACC.)
I base this on something PJ said last week about beating Georgia — “Been there, done that” — and on his stated desire to win championships at Tech. “We almost did it last year,” he said, and the Jackets did. They shared first place in the Coastal Division but lost to Virginia Tech on a tiebreaker. And now the moment is here. Beat Clemson in Tampa and the Jackets will play in the Orange Bowl in Year 2 under Paul Johnson. And that’s pretty darn impressive even if they did lose to the hated mutts.
A year ago, I think PJ would have chosen the other course: He needed to beat Georgia to establish credibility among his constituency. And that had to come first lest he run the risk of turning into Chan Gailey. (Who was fired because he couldn’t beat Georgia, fired 51 weeks after he played for the ACC title in Jacksonville.) Having done the deed in Year 1, Johnson has more global goals.
Which is why, I submit, he talked down the rivalry last week. (Indeed, he came tantalizingly close to channeling Reggie Ball and saying of Georgia: “It’s just a game, dog.”) PJ said this flat-out: “I’m going to get Georgia Tech to the point where our program is bigger than one game.”
Georgia fans will crow that the ACC title game now holds no currency, but that’s not true. (The Tech fan’s comeback: “So who are you playing this week?”) Tech was the best team in its conference, which isn’t to be confused with the SEC but isn’t the New York-Penn League, either. And that was the Jackets’ stated goal from spring practice on — win the ACC.
Remember Tech’s rings from last season? They weren’t presented for beating Georgia, although they did bear the famous score. (I’m pretty sure this year’s rings won’t be engraved with “30-24.”) The rings were for tying for the Coastal title. This year GT and PJ don’t have to share a division with anyone. This year they can win the whole conference. And I’m thinking, in this coach’s mind, that was Job 1 all along.

Let’s face it GT fans…it hurts bad to lose to UGA. Because if winning the championship is more important then beating UGA then why didn’t you put that score on your rings last year? I’m just saying…

I get where Johnson is coming from – I mean – it’s the politically correct thing to say. But that coupled with a few other Johnson quotes has convinced me that he really doesn’t “GET” the Ga/GATech rivalry. Just watch – it will be that lack of understanding that will eventually lead to his undoing.

A few weeks ago you write that PJ had Tech going in the right direction and Richt’s time is just about done. 9 years ago you write the same about Richt and Gailey. Now this great program on the rise is beaten at home by a middle of the road SEC school. And look, now Tech was over looking Georgia in hopes of an Little League title. Your a Joke as a writer. Congrats to the Georgia football team on a good win in a great game. And contrary to what many of the Georgia fans want to believe, it was a great game between two good teams. One team forges ahead , the other team fights back . One team has a long score, the other team answers right back. The game was not decided until the final minute and could very easily have gone the other way. What an exciting game. I hate it that we lost, but I am proud of the Jackets for not quitting and that they kept fighting to the end.
Now let’s talk about SOME of the Georgia fans logic and comments:
1.Since Georgia won that somehow diminishes an ACC championship for Tech if we win next week. By that logic, Florida was not a legitimate National Champion last year because they lost to Ole Miss. LSU lost two games (Kentucky and Arkansas) the year before and were still National Champs. As a practical matter many superior teams in many sports have won championships while having lost to a mediocre team they should have beat. So I don’t care how much you try to diminish our team or what you think. If Tech wins next week they will be ACC champions and play in a BCS bowl.
2.Yes, Tech fans ragged Georgia fans after last year’s win, but that is what Georgia fans do every time they win a big game (See Florida), so why was it wrong for Tech fans to have done the same? We won last year’s game, so that gave us the right to rag Ga fans. But all I heard from Ga fans was “Tech fans are picking on us.” I remember many comments after last year’s game from Ga fans that said “well you beat us but you are not even going to play for your Conference’s Championship.” I believe therefore that it is OK for me to say to Ga fans “well you beat us but you are not even going to play for your Conference’s Championship.” So there you go you SEC also rans. Most team’s fans rag the other team’s fans when they win, but Ga fans are such crybabies they can’t take it when other fans give back to them what they take such pleasure in dishing out any time they win. It is Ok for Georgia fans to rag us this year because Ga won. So rag on.
3.It is sad that you denigrate your own team in order to tear down our team. Many of Ga “fans” comments talk about how Tech lost to an average, mediocre, middle of the SEC conference team, a team that sucks. Well I disagree with them. I think Ga has a good team with many great players and it is no disgrace for Tech to lose to them. A few breaks and Ga could easily be 9 and 3 right now (LSU game in particular). Both teams of young men played their hearts out and gave us fans an exciting evening of football.
4.As far as excuses, I remember a whole lot coming out of Athens last year, so what’s good for Ga is good for Tech.
So GA fans enjoy your victory and rag all you want. I for one am man enough to take it and will remain a loyal Tech fan regardless. GO TECH, TO HELL WITH GEORGIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For GTTURNEDUP:
1980 – The Bulldogs beat Notre Dame 17–10 in the Sugar Bowl to finish 12-0 and claim the National Championship. Notable contributors during the season included Herschel Walker, Buck Belue and Lindsay Scott (Georgia was listed first by AP, Berryman, FACT, FB News, FW, Helms, National Championship Foundation, NFF, Poling, Sporting News & UPI).
Other years in which the Bulldogs finished with a number-one ranking in at least one of the final national polls and included in the official NCAA Football Record Book
1927 – With a 9-1-0 record, the Bulldogs were called the “dream and wonder team” and were ranked No. 1 in the nation with one regular season game remaining, but were upset by Georgia Tech by a score of 12-0 at Grant Field in Atlanta, Georgia.[29] Nevertheless, at the end of the season, Georgia was ranked number 1 in two polls recognized by the NCAA.[30] The Bulldogs were also listed as number 1 in two other polls of the 1927 season, but most recognize Illinois as the 1927 National Champion.
1942 – 11–1 Georgia was chosen as champion by at least half of the recognized polls. Georgia was led by All-Americans Frank Sinkwich and end George Poschner, along with a young back named Charley Trippi. The Bulldogs knocked off 9 consecutive opponents and ranked No. 1 in the nation. Georgia earned a Rose Bowl bid after it blanked Georgia Tech 34–0 in Athens to end the regular season. Georgia then edged UCLA 9-0 in the Rose Bowl
1946 Georgia went 11-0 and beat North Carolina 20-10 and was proclaimed national champions by half the national polls.
1968 Georgia was chosen by one national poll when they went 9-1-2 losing to Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl. Overtime was not allowed in the NCAA yet so Georgia tied with Tennessee and Houston.

CPJ’s going to get “educated” about how important this game is. Quickly and Emphatically.
He wouldn’t have taken any heat about that remark if Tech had won the game; either he personally was overconfident when he made the remark, or he was (I’m trying to be polite here) just plain ignorant about the stature of this game.

All CPJ needs to do to is read 1 page of this blog to see why beating UGA is important. But in the grand scheme of things winning the ACC and going to a BCS bowl game is the #1 priority THIS year. Finishing 12-2 would have us poised to play for bigger things next year and CPJ is looking at the big picture. But if we want to win championships, National Championships, we still have to beat UGA.

Tech fans:
1. UGA has a better all-time winning percentage.
2. UGA has dominated the UGA-GT game historically.
3. UGA has defeated Tech 15 out of the last 20 years.
4. UGA has been to and won more bowl games than GT.
5. UGA has played in more BCS games.
6. UGA plays in the SEC, which is nationally acknowledged as the most competitive conference for the last decade.
7. GT plays in the ACC which is great at basketball.
8. GT hasn’t defeated UGA in Atlanta since Clinton was President.
Now, roll those facts around in your heads. As UGA fans, we don’t care about the insults you throw back at us (redneck, trailer-trash, tobacco-chewing inbreeds) because we know they’re not true. We also don’t care how many space shuttles you built or flew on, or that you have a higher freshman SAT average.
When it comes to Tech, what we care most about is beating you, and historically we’re pretty good at it. We can accept our disappointing season, but it does seem sweeter knowing we once again baffled GT. Winning championships is far more important than any rivalry game, and yes, I said that last year too. Will say it again in 2010 and beyond. I dare say that there isn’t one single player or fan that would, given the choice, take a rivalry win over a championship victory. The Clemson game is simply much more important.
Now I am not one to dismiss the Georgia game to say that Tech was looking down the road. Not at all. In fact, Georgia outplayed Tech and deserved to win. However, in the grand scheme of things the Georgia game ranks so far down the list of Tech’s important games this year that it is barely of consequence. Win or lose it just isn’t very important unless it has National Championship significance. I can make a case that Clemson is a bigger significant rivalry than Georgia. Saturday’s game is huge and probably 5 times bigger than Georgia.

So, UGA beat us. Does not meant Ga Tech did not have a great season, it is not like UGA is some great football team, loosing to them does not end the season for Ga Tech. It must really be something for UGA. When is the last time you heard UGA barking it up after beating Ga Tech? Yep, been a very long time. Tells me the times are changing. UGA will never be a great team, dont ever see them going 12 – 0, 11 -1 or 10 -2, they might…but doubtful. But, hats off to UGA, they won the game and probably get to go back to Atlanta. In order for Ga Tech to continue to have good football seasons, we need a new DEFENSIVE program. So, I say to Paul Johnson, lets make the change. Lets get someone in who knows how to coach defense, lets face it. For 2 years of defense has stunk and it has been the offense that kept us in there. If we dont get a hold on the defense, Ga Tech my wind up 10 and 4 this year, what a let down. So, UGA you won and good for you.. 7 wins, how does it feel knowing your wholse season depended upon the Ga Tech game, know you know how we felt with Chan. Lets go Ga Tech, learn how to play the really big games and start this weekend agains Clemson, or, you are going to let yourselves down and your fans. I still LOVE my Ga Tech Yellow Jackets! It would have been nice to win that game, but 10-2 with 2-1 against the SEC ain’t too shabby. Now finish the thing with two more wins. Go Jackets THWG!

Yea! I found one on e-bay. $30.24 is the asking price. I wonder how they came up with that amount? Shipping though is PRICELESS!
