Slept fast. Went to Mass. Now I’m back downtown, chatting again. Last night was great fun — fine game, unexpected (at least by me) result, much to discuss. Example: Why did Paul Johnson call four consecutive deep passes with the game on the line? We know his stylized offense doesn’t feature the short or intermediate pass, but what about the ol’ option toss? Did PJ bail out — mixed metaphor alert — on his bread and butter?
I wish I could say I had great hope for another great game here at the Dome, but I don’t. I figure the Falcons beat the Bucs by three touchdowns. I figure the Falcons need to beat the Bucs by three touchdowns just to remind themselves they can still be a playoff-caliber team, recent results notwithstanding.
Four losses in five games will have a chilling effect on a franchise and its fans, and traffic around the Dome seemed unusually light around 11:30. (And I was running late.) Can’t imagine there’ll be a full house today, but I’m bad at predictions. Example: Tech 42, Georgia 27.
Wrongheaded though I am, I hope we can make the most of whatever this day brings. The idea is to talk about the Falcons, but we can certainly accommodate the occasional Tech-UGA submission. So I ask once again: Join me, won’t you?
Oh, and this one actual snippet of news: Michael Turner is in uniform and seems to be moving expeditiously in warmups. He’ll play. And Jerious Norwood is no longer among the inactives. That makes for a full house in the backfield, which isn’t the same thing as a full-house backfield. But it’s a most welcome sign.

Makes you wonder what Georgia might have been if they’d run the ball a little more a bit sooner. Maybe the other SEC teams were too stout up front to allow that to happen. But it sure seemed the less Joe Cox threw, the better Georgia played.

I’ve heard people say Tech would rather have beaten Georgia than won the ACC championship. I’m not sure that’s true this year. Tech beat Georgia last year at the time the new coach needed to beat Georgia. Now, if you’re asking me, I’m guessing Paul Johnson would rather add the ACC title to his curriculum vitae.
Not to say he wouldn’t have liked doing both.

Mark,
Are you even going to bother going to Tampa next Saturday?
I mean, that game is now about as relevant as a poopy-flavored lolipop, right?
I know, rivalry games and all that: but the two BEST teams in the ACC just got their butts handed to them by two thoroughly mediocre SEC teams.
So what’s that say about the ACC?
I mean, we know who we throught we were (to borrow from Dennis Green). We’re a mediocre, undisciplined, poorly coached SEC team.
So what does that make Tech?
All those noises you heard driving back home last night were the delusions of all the Bugs in the world crashing back down to earth.
And yeah, the win was nice, but we’re STILL a mediocre SEC team.
Who just beat the best team in the ACC.
Hehe.

Here’s a question for the Falcons:
With Jason Snelling playing well, and a game that should be an easy win, in YOUR building, WHY are you even thinking about letting a gimpy Michael Turner play this week?
What if he gets hurt, again?
Falcons should put Turner into a box until NEXT week, which is a MUST WIN game.

SHUT UP! You never played the game. I played the game. Not many games, and I wasn’t any good in the games I played, but I played the game, and none of you did. As for why I was better in the first few games and not in the last few games, it’s because I suck, and I’m overly sensitive, but none of you, and I repeat none of you could know that like I do, because none of you ever played QB like I have, thus none of you could ever know what it is like to be a bad QB like I do because you’ve never been a bad QB like I’ve been, so there is no way you could ever know what a bad QB is like I do. Now you go back to being a bad fan, and I’ll go back to being a bad QB.

This game has a very odd flow to it..it kinda feels like going on a blind date with somebody that you really don’t want to be with. Ryan’s first pass was almost intercepted, and then he gets hurt, and now he is unable to play. The last thing that the falcons need is for the bucs to get confident and cocky about their chances of actually winning this game. Mr. Bradley, how far do you figure Arthur Blank will be able and willing to reach into his pockets to fill the gaping needs this team obviously still has during the offseason (one would think he and Dimitroff HAVE to already be thinking about it)? We need physicality and attitude on BOTH offensive and defensive lines (which we’re just not getting), we need an ENTIRE new secondary, a new kicker, and probably at least one more sure-handed, athletic receiver. Can that even be done in a single year, with only the draft and free agency to draw from? But that’s what it’s going to take to bring home a Lombardi trophy.

I can’t agree with you more. It was a poor, poor day for the ACC. But those games happen. GT is 2-1 against this SEC this year at least they schedule SEC teams.
GT came out flat like they knew they would win and they played like it. Defense needs one more year and another coordinator. UGA hadn’t been able to run on the worst defenses all year, until last night. The GT defense was suspect all year and they let up last night, it finally caught up to them. The turnover’s on offense didn’t help. Jaybo had no business throwing the ball like he did and Nesbitt and Dwyer hadn’t messed up the mesh all year and they did it twice last night.
Just not a good night for the Jackets. They lost the turnover margin and still almost won though.

Hopefully Ryan’s injury is not long-term; injuries alone have really been a frustration for this year’s Falcons, and admittedly you can’t predict or defend against those (although blocking for your quarterback tends to help). Maybe Redman can help us eke out a win here and then we’ll see what happens going into next week. The team will still be 1-5 in the last 6 games – they are toast. Can’t even beat a 1-9 team at home, who has fired their offensive & defensive coordinators.

We appointed him as the King of Coaches in his first season (like Mike Smith), and then saw as he couldn’t coach a team whose backs got up against a wall. Jimmy,
You’re absolutely right. But if it was that suspect, something needed to be done in free agency. We traded a second rounder for Tony Gonzalez — if you’re trading draft picks, you’re saying your time is now, not later. And based on what we have, we don’t even have something to build on for next year (outside of Lofton).
Dimitroff relies too much on the Patriots philosophy. At some point, though, you have to realize the Pats got a little lucky with their drafts. You also have to realize they made a move for Wes Welker, Adalyius Thomas, and Randy Moss. Dimitroff seems stubborn in his “we’re going to build through the draft” process.

Mark,
Why does this Falcons team feel like this year’s Georgia team?
There are some subtle differences:
with Georgia, we have a load of talent, but the coaches do nothing with it

But there just seems to be a lack of focus in Flowery Branch right now.

Why didn’t Thomas Dimitroff, with all of that cap space, sign Chris McCallister the SECOND that Brian Williams got hurt?
It makes absolutely NO sense not to sign McCallister at that moment to a one-year contract with a team option for a second year.
We’re talking one of the best corners of this decade.
We had the space, and there was a definitive need. Last year and this year should have been all the proof needed that Grimes sucks.
It just makes NO SENSE that we let McCallister get signed by the Saints.

Atlanta is the worst sports city in the world. Baghdad is a better sports town than Atlanta. Also I like how the Georgia fans are acting like they won the National Championship by beating a Tech team who was without their starting quarterback for almost the entire first half. You stupid douche bag you do realize that Vick took several games off and the Falcons made the playoffs twice the whole time he was in Atlanta. You make it sound like the Falcons were playing in the super bowl every year. Check out the last game of the year back in 2006 against the Panthers when that crack head Vick didn’t show up at all. Of course you were probably robbing houses in South West Atlanta at the time to remember that game and all the other games that Vick played like crap in.

Come on what happen was a fluke and everyone knows it. You should be proud of your team winning but some of the Georgia fans are acting like they just won a national championship.

I’m beginning to lose the faith that I had built up in them. Maybe we don’t have the right guys to lead this team.
They have pretty much lost all the progress they made in a year in 11 games.
This group is the same old garbage offensive line pourous defense sad sack loser offense that were the……same old falcons.
It’s not like I’m not pulling for them before someone calls me fairweather…. but I know bad football when I see it… and these guys are playing like a bunch of bums.

I said it last week, and it bears mentioning again: this forum, which is supposed to be dedicated to FALCONS FANS and for the relevant discussion centering around this team, has become hard to stand at times due to a few individuals who apparently have WAY too much time on their hands to dedicate to rooting AGAINST the Falcons and their players. I don’t care what their reason is (though it’s clear we all know that by now), this childish, malicious race-baiting and posting just to offend or get a reaction out of the genuine fans on this board needs to stop, NOW. You know who I’m talking to; if you’re not here to cheer for this team or offer something constructive, please do us all a favor and GET OUT. I’m a fan of all the Atlanta teams and they really don’t deserve a championship at least the fans don’t. And the transient thing doesn’t work. Washington Redskins games are always sold out and DC is probably the biggest transient town in the country. Same with the Capitals and even Miami sells out of the Dolphins. Nashville for the Titans. Phoenix is a huge transient city, just as much so as Atlanta, and all of their teams draw well except for the hockey team.

I’m not at the game because I live 6 hours away from Atlanta and I actually have a job to go to tomorrow morning. I rooted for Vick when he was a Falcon but the guy plays in Philly now I got two of the guys jerseys but guess what? He screwed up and went to prison so I don’t feel sorry for people who lie constantly to the FBI and then ends up in prison for two years. But the Falcons quarterback is Matt Ryan and has played as good as any second year QB I have ever seen in the NFL. Yet there are always people on these boards who just go on and on about how crappy he is and always bring up the Dome being not sold out. You think that’s Ryan’s fault? There were no shows and empty seats when Vick was the QB. It’s not Ryan’s fault that people only rooted for one guy and were not real fans of the team. Just like certain people in Atlanta were wearing Jordan jerseys in the 90s and now wear Cavs jerseys or Lakers jerseys. The city is full of bandwagon fans and fans that just root for star players.
If Matt Ryan was playing in any other city he would be a god.

No one is routing against Matt Ryan (well except a couple of people, lol).
My contention has been all along that he will be an average q-back at best. The signs were all there when he was drafted; weak arm, lots of interceptions, etc. But you people let your hatred of MV& cloud your judgement of Ryans abilities. Ryan had a great year last year. Many factors went into his success; o-line playing above their level, Michael Turner having a GREAT year, weak schedule, surprise on their side, etc. So you decided to crown Matty the next Peyton Manning. It aint happening folks. Matty Ice has peaked. He will be just “ok”. And now anyone who criticizes him is a reverse racist? Does that make anyone who criticizes Mike Vick a racist?
And, by the way, there is not a blog in the country that does not entertain critism of the home team, much less intrusions by opposing fans.

Have you ever watched the NFL before? All of the teams can win any week, even the bad ones like the Lions. You get your starting running back, QB, and two members of the O line out and any team can beat you, especially a team like Tampa who has been playing really good lately. Josh Freeman is a good QB and they switched back to the Tampa 2 which is a very good defense. Tampa is no where near as bad as their record suggest.

I’d say this game was indeed decided on the lines. Tampa’s pressure on Atlanta QBs and the Tampa line keeping the Falcons off their guy. Despite all the fancy stuff, this game is still about blocking and tackling, the basics. Team that does it best and doesn’t drop the ball wins. Speaking of which, that fumble by Snelling was a killer. They’d have been first down inside the 30 there and might have been able to do something.

I hope all you bums out there whining about Ryan and all of the rest aren’t around when Atlanta truly becomes one of the consistently elite teams in the league, which they certainly will. They’ve lost key players at almost every position this year and are still have a shot at the playoffs. And, Matt Ryan hasn’t been as good this year as last, but can anyone out there name a player who has not had a few hick-ups during their career, especially in the first few years. I have been a Falcons fan since the Bartkowshi days and this is the first time I have really felt like this team has a long future of winning ahead of it. The “process” takes time and patience, and you’d think after all of the misery we’ve had over the years that our so-called fans would be able to see that although sometimes things look the same, they aren’t.
lamac66

Ryan had a great year last year. Many factors went into his success; o-line playing above their level, Michael Turner having a GREAT year, weak schedule, surprise on their side, etc. So you decided to crown Matty the next Peyton Manning. It aint happening folks. Matty Ice has peaked. He will be just “ok”. And now anyone who criticizes him is a reverse racist? Does that make anyone who criticizes Mike Vick a racist?
And, by the way, there is not a blog in the country that does not entertain critism of the home team, much less intrusions by opposing fans.
You people crack me up.Get a life.

For those jumping off the Smith bandwagon, keep in mind that the teams that fire coaches every few years because of a down season are the ones that never win anything. Like, say, the Falcons. Teams like the Steelers and Eagles who stick with their guy tend to bounce back and have more continuity and success over the long haul. Fans are too emotion and too quick to throw a guy under the bus. Which is why we got no business running the team.

Really, who could do much more with that secondary or non-pass-rushing defensive linemen? I would put more heat on Dimitroff than Smith for sure. He’s the one that did nothing to address the lack of a shutdown CB last year, preseason, & top half of the season (when we could’ve scooped up one of several quality free agent veteran CB’s).

Chris Redman took over the game. That’s it. The running game was gone, and Chris Redman went out and won the game!
That’s what I look for when I talk about a good QB- when the chips are down, give the ball to the QB and let him win the game for you. The passes were crisp and were on target. And that last pass was beautiful.
I think that Matt Ryan learned something today. I think he saw someone that didn’t get scared, kept his poise and went back to his training. As a result, he was in the position to win the game and did just that.
Chris Redman just made Matt Ryan a better quarterback.

Yeah, Raheem might have been watching The Gamer Belichik too much. But any win in the NFL is a good win. 6-5 ain’t great but you’re in it, and considering where this team was a couple of years ago, playing out the string with no coach and no QB, I’ll take it. Just be in the hunt, that’s all you can ask. Again, this ain’t SEC football where everyone who shows up gets to go to a bowl. This is big-boy ball.

This Falcons team deserves more credit than they’ll likely get for this win, solely based on the fact that by now their sideline looks like a M.A.S.H. unit filled with big names. They overcame a lot of adversity, and a win’s a win regardless of the record of the team you’re playing against. I hope that Matt Ryan will be healthy enough to play against the Eagles, and that the O-line will give him enough protection for a change that he’ll be able to do his job. One thing the Vick fans here can’t argue, we’d miss Ryan a heck of a lot more than the Eagles would their bench-warming backup. It’s not going to come down to or prove “who’s the better quarterback”, folks, though I’m sure the media and a lot of local folks will hype it up to do so; it’ll take a TEAM EFFORT to win for either side.
Just like it did today. GO FALCONS!!!!!!

Like I have been saying all along. Redman could have won last season with that weak schedule and Turner the Burner.
Redman just proved my point. He looked more Peyton like than the CHOKE.
The CHOKE is just hype and after the Eagles leave town next week, he will be blaming another teammate for his problems.
When the team needed their leader, he was crying about a freakin toe injury – Stafford lead his team with a separated shoulder and that’s why his teammates respect him for SUCKING IT UP!

Next week is a playoff game.
1) Both Ryan and Turner will return
2) No one will give two s—- about Vick returning except the stupid media. He is irrelevant to that game he will do nothing. He was 0-1 passing with 2 runs for 4 yard against the Redskins. Andy Reid will not use him in an virtual playoff game and waste critical snaps.

This game could have been like in 05 and 06 when the Falcons were fading and we played a bad Green Bay team, and a Bad Cleveland team.
However, with the mighty MV7 at QB, we lost both of those and never played another meaningful game either season.

Congrads to the veteran Chris Redman! Showed how to overcome playing with two 2nd string O-linemen. Show how to play, throw, read, and work the team down the field. Showed how trust the something not worthy of trust (Michael Jenkins), and made not just the big throw, but the little ones on a consistent basis… Solid play, solid back-up, way to go… BTW, pray we never have to play John Wilson…

First off ,will someone please tell Blank to stay off the d@m field until after the game is completely over . He make the falcons and their coaches look weak with all those affectionate huge . The falcons are really hurting i understand that ,but I’m beginning to have second though about coach Smith and his coaching team having what it take to get the falcons to the next level in the NFL .The defense should be strapped next year and rebuilt with real men who have heart , i don’t see out there on the field any more from the falcons . Abraham should be the first to go .

Dennis, Blank being on the sidelines is no different than the waterboy or towel girl or ex player or celebrity being there……he has no bearing on anything. Thinking Blank being on the sidelines affects the outcomes of the games is the same as saying the fans dont need to be at the games. Plus, the Falcons are 12-1 the past 2 years at home and I’m pretty sure Blank was on the sidelines for those W’s too.
