Live from the Joke by Coke, and the Evil Genius = hope

The ideal Christmas for a Dawg fan? Here you go. (Photo by M. Bradley)

The ideal Christmas gift for a Dawg fan? Not this. (Photo by M. Bradley)

Understand: In my entire life, I have never thought of Bobby Dodd Stadium as the Joke by Coke, but seeing as how I’m tasked with chatting live tonight from a Georgia perspective I thought I’d get in the spirit. But that, I should report, is where it ends. No cracks about John DUI-berry. Or Reggie Ball. (Well, maybe only one or two.) Everything else will be straight down the middle. Fair and balanced, as we say here at Fox News.

And we at Fox News have learned that the Ol’ Ball Coach doubled the score on young Dabo of Swinney, which has the effect of doing two things near and dear to Georgia fans’ hearts. First, it devalues the ACC title game, in which the North Avenue Trade School — sorry, couldn’t t resist just one more — will take part, and it also offers further proof that the ACC isn’t exactly a fortress of a league.

South Carolina entered having lost five of 11 games, same as Georgia. South Carolina had lost to Georgia by four points on Sept. 12, two days after Georgia Tech beat Clemson by three. So comparative scores were pretty close. (Not that comparative scores tell us much, but hear me out.) And today the Evil Genius whipped his in-state rival 34-17.

Can it happen in another state championship game? Honesty compels me to say I don’t think so, but I’ve been wrong about this game twice in the past three years. I figured Tech would handle Georgia in 2006 given that the Jackets were ranked and headed for the ACC title tilt — sound familiar — and the Bulldogs had needed an upset of Auburn just to get to 7-4. And I figured Georgia would still be too much for the Jackets were — for a half. Then things changed.

I see Georgia scoring some points on Tech. I see Tech scoring a lot more on Georgia. I’ve been saying 42-27 for two weeks, and yesterday I asked you kind folks for your thoughts on the matter. At last check, the semi-consensus among respondents was that the Jackets would win big or Georgia would win close. I’d bet on the latter if I bet. Which I do not. So feel free to disregard my gambling advice.

Please also feel free to join us as we discuss the game from a Georgia angle tonight. I’ll be here until it ends, which I figure will be at 11:29 p.m. EST. And it had better be. My print deadline is 11:30. But that’s problem, not yours. And I look forward to your company on what promises to be an intriguing night.

I have been interviewed on pregame shows. I was a guest on Heywood Harris’ show before a Tennessee-Kentucky game in 1982. I believe Heywood’s show is the longest-running of its ilk.

Speaking of Kentucky-Tennessee: Cats haven’t won that game since 1984, which was my first year in Atlanta.

Never will forget the post game interview betwwen Donnan and Loran after a big win against SC on a hot day. Loran was concerened with the players cramping which Donnan responded ” What the hell kinda question is that? We just beat a good football team today” . Can you Imagine CMR saying that to Doodle?

Mark, before the real football game, where did your appreciation for soccer come from? It seems just the last 3-4 years you’ve been referring to the premiership, etc. Also, didn’t you once have a fear of flying? thanks, looking forward to the ongoing hilarity tonight.

Meanwhile...PETA's protest short lived

November 28th, 2009

PETA was in full force today, outside the gates of Grant Field protesting the treatment of the bulldogs.

When it was pointed out that it wasn’t humans abusing the bulldogs, but in fact a hive of yellow jackets, the PETA members looked at each other quizzically, decided to let nature take its course, and quickly departed the proceedings.

Rumor has it they will now concentrate their efforts on changing the Tech’s traditional kickoff saying to When Toe Meets Pleather.

The Donnan/Smith exchange was after the South Carolina game of 1997, I believe. (It was 1997 or 1999.)

And no, I haven’t seen Vince Dooley. He might be handling Russ.

I see Hairy Dawg, by the way. But not the new (real) dog.

based on clemson/s.c. game, and other SEC biases that I harbor, I think UGA’s defense will be faster than most of what Tech has seen, particularly on the line and linebackers. Seriously. That being said, the secondary is not coached to cover guys for some unfeasible reason, and all the team speed UGA still has won’t stop them from
A. turning the ball over
B. committing a bevy of penalties.
So after seeing what Gamecocks did to Clemson, I now only think Tech wins 37-24.

Almost went to Fist City there, folks. Georgia players had huddled on their side of midfield, and the Tech players came charging up like they were going to storm the beach. They stopped just shy of the 50, but there was some yelling and gesturing between the sides. Refs were in the middle.

And Georgia was penalized for excessive celebration. (Kidding about that last part.)

November 28th, 2009

I just saw a very interesting line from tomorrow’s paper. Not sure if it was written by Mark or Jeff, but it’s telling nonetheless:

After rushing for only 275 yards in the first half, Coach Paul Johnson finally relented and let the Tech offense play with the full contingent of 11 players in the second half.

dear mr bradley. yes i am a happy gamecock today. but the reason we crushed clemson is that we were simply more physical. i will to root for the sec school. and yes uga has sec speed and might contain tech. but, uga is not the physical powerhouse they were 1, 2, 4 year ago. tech however is a physical team and thats why they will beat uga who can get ready for the extra pepperoni at the papajohns.com bowl.
