Live from the Joke by Coke, and the Evil Genius = hope

The ideal Christmas for a Dawg fan? Here you go. (Photo by M. Bradley)

The ideal Christmas gift for a Dawg fan? Not this. (Photo by M. Bradley)

Understand: In my entire life, I have never thought of Bobby Dodd Stadium as the Joke by Coke, but seeing as how I’m tasked with chatting live tonight from a Georgia perspective I thought I’d get in the spirit. But that, I should report, is where it ends. No cracks about John DUI-berry. Or Reggie Ball. (Well, maybe only one or two.) Everything else will be straight down the middle. Fair and balanced, as we say here at Fox News.

And we at Fox News have learned that the Ol’ Ball Coach doubled the score on young Dabo of Swinney, which has the effect of doing two things near and dear to Georgia fans’ hearts. First, it devalues the ACC title game, in which the North Avenue Trade School — sorry, couldn’t t resist just one more — will take part, and it also offers further proof that the ACC isn’t exactly a fortress of a league.

South Carolina entered having lost five of 11 games, same as Georgia. South Carolina had lost to Georgia by four points on Sept. 12, two days after Georgia Tech beat Clemson by three. So comparative scores were pretty close. (Not that comparative scores tell us much, but hear me out.) And today the Evil Genius whipped his in-state rival 34-17.

Can it happen in another state championship game? Honesty compels me to say I don’t think so, but I’ve been wrong about this game twice in the past three years. I figured Tech would handle Georgia in 2006 given that the Jackets were ranked and headed for the ACC title tilt — sound familiar — and the Bulldogs had needed an upset of Auburn just to get to 7-4. And I figured Georgia would still be too much for the Jackets were — for a half. Then things changed.

I see Georgia scoring some points on Tech. I see Tech scoring a lot more on Georgia. I’ve been saying 42-27 for two weeks, and yesterday I asked you kind folks for your thoughts on the matter. At last check, the semi-consensus among respondents was that the Jackets would win big or Georgia would win close. I’d bet on the latter if I bet. Which I do not. So feel free to disregard my gambling advice.

Please also feel free to join us as we discuss the game from a Georgia angle tonight. I’ll be here until it ends, which I figure will be at 11:29 p.m. EST. And it had better be. My print deadline is 11:30. But that’s problem, not yours. And I look forward to your company on what promises to be an intriguing night.

I’m thinking Mrs. Woods went with a 7-iron, and the argument escalated when her husband said, “You shoulda used more club.”

Mark you always give kudos for first. Even when someone types the word first just to be first. It’s the moral equivalent of Florida playing a NAIA school.

Yet knowing full well those who take the easy way out might beat me to the punch, I get your blog yesterday started off with a combo of Tech meme, Bulldog angst, and a cultural icon reference as follows:

“Anticipating the unrelenting rushing attack Tech will unleash on Georgia, in a nod to Tech’s Trekkie fans, and most importantly, in a face saving gesture to CMR, Tech has agreed to convert rushing totals from yards to parsecs, so it won’t look quite so embarrassing on the Bulldog stat sheet. A total show of class from CPJ.”

Sure, I could have typed the word first and took the safe way out. But not unlike CPJ in the Wake Forest game, I went for it. Yet I get totally shut out by the Bradley computer, which has devastated my BCS (Blogging Championship Series) chances.

Mark, this has become much bigger than yesterday’s first post. It is no less a moral imperative, that we must, as a just and fair people, honor SOS (strength of screed) on this blog as much as we need to honor strength of schedule in college football.

Not to unduly pressure you, but I don’t think it’s too much to suggest the entire fate of western civilization rests squarely on your keyboard.

I trust you’ll do the right thing.

If the ACC is a joke, maybe the dogs should think about joining. Maybe that “superior talent” can garner more than 6 wins.

Bill…..Jacket Lawyer won’t give you his name. And if he did, he’d give you a fake one. He is virtually in his car driving down the road at 80mph, blowing the horn flippin’ you off. Ten foot tall and bullet proof behind the wheel of that car or the keyboard of his computer. Either way, weak.

Ok, Jacket lawyer. Here’s the deal. Judge Rufus sez to give Billy your name….and you’ve got 2 minutes to give it, or its summary judgment in my favor that you’re a pencil neck brief case carrying candy ass associate whose only contact sport is when you had a waitress fight at the Varsity.

I think the Dawgs will score some points tonight. Tech’s D is nothing to brag about.

I also predict Reshad Jones will not wrap up often and will be grossly out of position on pass plays. Ditto for Bryan Evans.

Please, Mr. Rambo. Be healthy and play tonight.

Dawgs win IF we run for 175+ yards and don’t lose the turnover battle. Dawgs need to run the ball to keep it out of Tech’s hands. This is not a ball-control offense…it’s big-play.

BitDog, Tech doesn’t have a law degree, but it has a helluva undergrad degree that really helps when it comes time to go to law school. And yes, Billy, I was accepted at good ol’ GA. Didn’t go though. I didn’t want to have to cut out half my brain to fit in at Athens.

I can’t decide if there’s a kind of depression, or a kind of serenity that comes from knowing what will happen tonight.

Knowing we will lose, and thanks to Martinez, lose big tonight has to make it easier than if this were a nail-biter, right?

I mean, let’s say, just by accident, because we know he couldn’t do it on purpose, that Joe Cox manages to get us a lead with less than 2 minutes remaining in the game.

We know we’re still going to lose, right? Fabris will tell Walsh to kick the ball to the 50 yard line. Then, on the second play, Nesbit will run 50 yards for a TD, leaving just enough time for Cox to get the ball back and throw his 5th INT of the game.

We’re talking about the defensive genius who let Vandy drive 60 yards for the winning field goal IN Sanford Stadium by calling his favorite soft zones, helping Jay Cutler get drafted in the 1st round.

We’re talking about the guy who single-handedly turned mediocre QBs in college like Erik Ainge and John Parker Wilson into NFL draft picks when they should have just been free agents, by calling his favored soft zones.

We’re talking about the guy who made the worst QB in the SEC, John Crompton, look like Peyton Manning this year by, once again, calling his favored soft zones.

We’re talking about a guy who used his last two bye-weeks to prepare his defense to get destroyed by 45 and 41 points.

I’m betting Willie is gonna give up a double-nickel tonight.

Bugs – 55 Dawgs – 4 (we get two safeties).

Thank you Mark thank you. Though it may have cost me a spot in the BCS title game, and a multimillion dollar payout, to be acknowledged by the Bradley computer takes most of the sting out of it.

Of course it didn’t hurt that Tommy Tuberville and Chris Petersen each sent me a nice letter saying they could feel my pain.

Mark is there any truth to the rumor that this week Tech players have nicknamed the Tech punter The Appendix because most likely he’ll be a useless appendage?
