Anticipating the unrelenting rushing attack Tech will unleash on Georgia, in a nod to Tech’s Trekkie fans, and most importantly, in a face saving gesture to CMR, Tech has agreed to convert rushing totals from yards to parsecs, so it won’t look quite so embarrassing on the Bulldog stat sheet.

I am a DAWGS Ffan but I am scared about this game. We have the talent no doubt but it seems we don’t have the heart. Tech’s O is too tough to figure out in one week and a short week at that. If Georgia plays like Georgia, Georgia will win. Georgia’s best chance is to run with some pass to eat the clock and limit turnovers. About 180 yards rushing (Ealey and King need to play big), 250 passing, about a 60% run/40% pass should do it. Cox needs to hit his guys in open spaces in stide and be very efficient. Tech will also have 2 turnovers lost in this game, probably fumbles, 1 by the QB, 1 by the pitchman. I also think Georgia has a BIG special teams advantage and that should be the difference–look for some fake punts, big KO returns, maybe even an onside kick, field goal and punter advantage.

If Ga limits giveaways, they win.

Cox, Bobo, and Willie should be pumped and ready to end the year on a bang.

I’ll admit the Dawgs scare me. They don’t have anything to lose and they should be good and angry after losing to the Wildcats.

How about 28-21 Tech? The Jacket defense isn’t exactly great, especially against the pass (FSU anyone?). If Cox can throw to the guys with a “G” on their heads instead of a “GT”, they won’t get blown out.

Then again, I’m hoping for 49-0 Tech at the half

Hate to think of UGA finishing 6-6, but think Tech will win. Hope Richt will look at what other coaches like Bear Bryant and Vince Dooley did after their programs suffered a slide. All Bear did was follow two six win seasons with about seven 10 or 11 win seasons in a row.

Bulldog Mike, Willie’s pumped every game, but it really doesn’t help him do his job. Nonetheless, maybe Tech will fumble a few times and we actually fall on them (so we can move out of 120th place in the NCAA in that category), and maybe cover on kickoffs (so we can move up from 116th place in that category), and have no turnovers and penalties ( yep, 116th and 119th in those categories), and give them a good game!! Mark, we have seen the kudos come for those who post first. Yet they are noticeably absent from this thread. A shocking omission, reverberating throughout the blogsphere, given the quality of the first post.

We have devolved into a never ending series of bloggers typing nothing more than the word first, in an attempt to gain primacy among bloggers. Yet knowing that there was a golden opportunity to be first, we instead see someone roll the dice and come up with a real post, an astute analysis synthesizing the current Tech meme, Bulldog angst, and a cultural icon all in one.

All this knowing full well that with every quality word typed, the risk was run that the coveted first spot might be taken by those who took the easy way out.

In other words, it was the Internet equivalent of CPJ going for it on fourth and one in the Wake Forest game. In another era, it might have very well clinched a Heisman. Or not. But the real question is, will it clinch the equally coveted Bradley?

I actually look for Tech to have a big day throwing the ball. A lot of deep completions. Georgia will stuff the option for a while but turnovers and penalties will kill us again. I look for Tech 28 – Good Guys 17.

Let’s see how Tech plays with the pressure of high expectations. The good news for Georgia is things can’t get any worse.

If Tech lsoes this game saturday night you won see a tech fan, Hat ,shirt, or car tag for months. It’s always that way. If tech loses they will avoid you in line at the work place, at the mall,
After they win a few though the hats and t-shirts and car tags will come back out, not like UGA fans ours are on display win or lose.

I posted this several years ago but it still stands true today, whenever Tech fans come to Sanford Stadium every other year they wear Atlanta Braves hats and shirts to keep from being noticed, but we can tell who you are trust me.
If Tech took the same stance with all their ACC brethren as they do the Dawgs the ACC would be a lot tougher leauge.
Oh well, look for a good game on saturday, win or lose sticking with my DAWGS though and will continue to wear my colors proudly. All year long.

This is a wildcard game at BEST. It really comes down to which Georgia team shows up….Georgia has the horses (talent, size, athleticism)..arguable as good as anyone in the county…. it just depends on how they execute…and limiting those recurring problems of turnovers, penalties, kickoffs etc. Georgia DOES have the ABILITY to blow out GT.

GT is definately playing physical, but hey, Georgia is arguably the most physical team, just depends on the intangibles of excution/discipline. GT has been on the positive side a several close games with weak teams. They are NOT a hard to beat team.

UGA has nothing to lose and this is a proving game for the players, coaches, etc. If I were betting this is definately a stay away game…. too unpredictable.

UGA has the better talent but GT has the better chemistry and confidence. As a dawg fan, i would rather have the chemistry and confidence over talent anydany. UGA will win if they can get some early turnovers and scores early. If not, the game should be real close. UGA defense is good against the run. I believe JO and GA can stop tech’s inside games…Rennie Curran can neutralize Nesbitt. The one thing that worries me is i’m not sure if our cornerbacks are stout enough to stop the pitch. If we can, i like our chances

This has not been a typical Georgia year in that the breaks and bouncing balls have not come the path they normally travel. Losing to LSU on a “wrongful glance” ? Please. Dawg Luck has been hiding and is due to blossom. This is the day. All those 4 and 5 starred guys are gonna shine and the red-headed qb will put on a show that will rival any clinic. Clip this and put on the fridge: “Dawgs will win riding the pleasure of recovered fumbles, intercepted passes, and balls that favorably bounce.”

Sage advice for either team to heed if they plan on winning this contest on Saturday night. Limit penalties, cover kicks, and pressure the quarterback, also good advice.

It will boil down to if UGA can establish the run to open up the passing attack for Cox, and then Cox performing the rest and avoiding the interceptions. Tech, on the other hand, will need to continue to stay strong on defense against the run, pressure Cox and force him to hurry his throws, and keep doing what they have been doing all year on offense. The threat of the long pass completion that Tech has proven good at this year should keep the UGA defense from camping out too much on the run. If they forget that Nesbitt can throw the ball… well it will not fare well for the Pups.

UGA should maintain the edge in punting as Butler has a cannon for a leg. The special teams play could spark a series of momentum swings that could keep things tight all night long.

But, if the defense of UGA doesn’t adjust to what Tech is doing, and Cox & company get a case of turnover disease, it will not be a contest. I still think it will be a pretty close contest through the first half, with Tech mounting a series of scores in the third quarter and ultimately pulling away to win it 49 to 24.

Fundamentals of football. Something that the Pups have struggled with all season. Three days to prepare, coming off a particularly stinging loss, and still showing signs of the penalty virus and turnover disease.

Tech coming into this contest is rested, showing no sighs of cooling off offensively, has greatly improved their defense play, and has demonstrated recently that they can launch a passing attack to keep the defenses honest and not just camp out on the running attack.

The Pups have not demonstrated that they can handled the edges very well on defense this year and that is where Tech is most dangerous when running the triple option. Poor tackling, another UGA habit, can’t stop the Tech backs when they get a lane, either up the middle or on the edges.

Tech’s defense is suspect against the pass. Cox should have a fairly good time making some connections to his receivers as long as the Tech defense doesn’t put pressure on him. If they can get to Cox early and often, well, the ole’ deer in the headlight look will develop on Cox’s face and here come the pick sixes.

Georgia has a dynamite weapon in Butler, and he can keep the Jackets backed up deep in their own territory. But, with the offense clicking, all this will do is afford Tech more time to eat the clock and keep the ball out of UGA’s hands. Georgia will have to score quick and often to offset the clock-eating ways of the Tech offensive team.

Tech will be focused, rested and ready to play and ready to break the string of losses at Bobby Dodd Stadium at the hands of the Pups. CPJ will have them ready and will not allow things to get out of hand.

The Pups will come in with who knows what kind of mindset. If they are emotionally up and stay focused and disciplined for the entire game, limit the mistakes and don’t come back after the halftime break in the funk they have had in some games earlier in the year it will be a close fought affair with the outcome maybe not determined until late in the game. If they come in with a hangover from the Kentucky game, and can’t maintain the mental and emotional focus for sixty minutes, it will get ugly… and in a hurry.

I predict, a fairly close game through the first half. Something like 10 to 7 or 14 to 10, with Tech holding the edge. The second half will be the real test for the Pup defense, and the third quarter may be the one that puts the Pups on their heels. Tech will pull away and some statement points may be made toward the end. Final score: Tech 49 Pups 24. All this could end up being totally different if the Pups can come in and strike early and often and put the Tech defense on its heels early. They have the potential, but will they be able to produce? My bet is that they won’t.

Keys to the game, Nesbitt, Dwyer, and Bay-Bay will have one of their best games, CPJ will out-coach CMR. The Pup defense will fold in the second half, and Cox will throw a couple of interceptions and get flustered… possibly early on; especially if the Jackets put pressure on him with some blitzing. Tech will win the time of possession battle by a good 10 to 15 minutes even though Butler puts them deep in their own territory with some good punts. Falling behind early will bring out the worst in the Pups lack of discipline and they will start commiting stupid penalties that will kill key drives ending their ability to stay with the Jackets and keep it close.

I could be wrong, but this is the picture that sets up based upon watching both teams all year. Georgia has had moments of great play with Auburn being their best game against a good opponent. The inconsistency of the Pups is what makes this game kind of hard to get a handle on as far as outcome. Tech has demonstrated that it is the better team, better coached and they are on a mission this year. UGA has been somewhat clueless all year and I don’t see them turning it around in this game, especially after being disrespected by their own fans in their own stadium before the outcome of the Kentucky game was settled. That will hang in the Pups minds and affect their play on Saturday, you just go hide and watch.

if Georgia eliminates turnovers and stupid penalties they are a great team… just look at the Oklahoma State and Kentucky games… we don’t turn the ball over in those games and we win… even the florida game, if joe cox doesn’t through that pick to start the second half, we have chance to make it a one possession game… BOTTOM LINE IS THIS…Georgia is a very undisciplined team with poor defensive coaching, BUT you can never count the dawgs out because of the level of talent out on the field… player for player Georgia is a more talented and athletic football team than Tech, and there is no disputing this… Tech executes better and plays more as a unit, which will consistently win you football games… however, in a rivalry game where bragging rights are on the line… don’t count out anyone… especially Georgia

Boy, there sure are some desperate dawg band-wagon fans on this blog, but I’d expect no less from these fair-weather groupies considering they have been going through this season with blinders on and pirate patches on both eyes. Your team is not that good this year. Let me repeat that tidbit. Your team is not that good this year! You lost your top 3 offensive players to the NFL and you just don’t have the experience to play at the level that your unrealistic expectations have deluded you into thinking that were there this year. And by the way, lay off CMR for crying out loud! He’s a great coach and a great person and you are quite lucky to have him at your redneck school. Grow up, and bring your hankies to the game tomorrow because it could be worse than ugly for you and your penalty-laden, fumbling, interception happy team. I think what really hurts you most is not the fact that you didn’t beat FL, didn’t beat TN or KY. Even in a year where we are really struggling, we care enough about our team to still stand up and defend our program… Where were you Jacket fans during that 7 year losing streak to Georgia? Tech fans are finally filling up their stadium and making some noise in the media, but only because of their recent success…. so if you want to talk about bandwagon… I will through that right back in your face sir.. last week against Kentucky, our demoralized, three loss football team still played in front of a sold out crowd, because we as fans still care about our team in a bad year…as soon as Tech slides back off into mediocrity again, attendance will drop and enthusiasm for the program will subside… you just watch………………didn’t mean to get us off topic here but that just really upsets me when you Tech fans question our commitment to our team

Bobby Dodd beat Georgia 8 straight times; went 59-7-3 between 1951 and 1956; won 8 of 12 major bowls; was one of the pioneers of the dadgum option offense; developed assistants and players who became head coaches at no less than 6 other major schools; and is one of the great gentlemen in the history of the college game. When he stepped down as head coach after 22 years, Tech had had 3 coaches in 63 years – Heisman, Alexander, and Dodd.
I like Paul Johnson as well as the next Tech fan, but what say we let him get grey-headed before we go to renaming things.

This is the score according to the crazy tech bloggers on here. That’s crazy. As bad as the dawgs have played this year, they are the 6-5 team that you don’t want to play.

They will not beat tech, but if I were a tech fan I would not brag so much. As coach Green says, “Go ahead and crown their a**, they are how we thought they were”. This game is techs to win or lose. Georgia cannot even step on the field with Tech. CPJ would not want any of Georgia’s players, because they are not good enough according to tech fan’s.

Really all you crazy UGA and Tech fan’s. Here is the keys to the game.

GT: Get the ball on the perimeter and expose the UGA secondary. For the past two years teams have feasted off of bad corner and secondary play. Once the linebackers start spreading out then run up the middle. Then after the cheat-up throw down field. This worked last year and should work this year.

Georgia: No turnovers, no penalties..glad that is out of the way. Also, you need points in the red-zone, which has been terrible over the past two years, 7’s not 3’s. Also the UGA offense needs to keep Tech on the sideline, a dose of CPJ elixir will go along way to shutdown an offense that can’t go anywhere. Last but not least, listen puppy defense, you have to shed the blockers on the perimeter and get in the back field, watch out for the chop-block. Reshad Jones, no more excuses…I thought he was out of bounds. Tackle.

End of the day, if UGA has 2 or more turnovers and/or 65 or more yards in penalties with one penalty then, GT 38, UGA 31

If UGA has no turnovers, has over 400 all purposes yards and runs for alt east a 150, and wins TOP, then UGA 38, Tech 31

I have always pulled for tech when they did not play the dawgs. I am sorry! I can not do that anymore. I love a winner and can not tolerate a loser. Just call me an American! Think I got my line from one of the greatest. Willie Martinez is a loser….and most of you analyst are being anal defending him. I was right here during all the tech years of the past 50 years, and even though we had up and down years, many of them down, my GT DNA runs deep and I never wavered in my team loyalty. It seems to me however that near the end of the KY game last week, the announcers pointed out the streaming of fans leaving the stadium before the clock hit 0:00, and were incredulous about it because there was still a chance to win for UGA. That my bad tax-dawg is the epitome of “fair weather fans”.

I guess I struck a nerve with you and sorry it seems to hit so close to home.

By the way, I was very jealous of your program when you hired CMR, and my opinion of him is still the same. I guess I get a little annoyed when your fans call for his ouster when they are way out of line. Yes, you play against Saban, Meyer, and Miles but you have the best chance against them with CMR. I can’t think of anyone better to run your program, so instead of bashing tech fans who for a change are having success, concentrate on helping your program instead of hating the fact that you are having an average year.

Or maybe bashing Tech fans gives you some pleasure in a year with disappointments. Go ahead, and we’ll laugh at you again after Sat. night for another 365 days.

Last year the dawgs had the ability to score 40+ points. This year I just don’t think it is possible. Willie Martinez’s defense is questionable at best. Tech’s offense has only got better. UGA is in trouble. Someone will have to be fired to justify these losses this year. Possibly two terminations. No decent bowl for UGA means no revenue. Which is the real motivation of these programs. Those stats are NCAA FBS Stats of 120 teams. It isn’t a conference to conference comparison. It is where each team is ranked nationally regardless of conference played in. These stats are through all eleven games played which means both Tech and Georgia compiled a portion of those stats playing outside their conference.

I like tech winning it 38-23. UGA will have a lot of penalties. They will get mad when we start rolling over them in the running game and then start hitting some long passes to Thomas and Hill. They will get frustrated and start hitting late out of bounds and that will spell the end. Coach Johnson won’t let tech lose this game band they will be healed up and prepared after the bye week. Georgia definately can pass the ball some and they have been running it pretty decent too but the Jackets will be too strong with all of the playmakers on offense and with Morgan rushing Cox (who has stopped him all year long? He’s a beast). UGA plays tough for a half or maybe 3 quarters but tech pulls this one out.

We’re really not all that terrible. So what if we lost to KenSUCKy, we played a real good game against Tennessee Tech. So what if we got embarrassed by the Volunteers and humiliated by the Gators. We managed to squeak by a great Auburn team that is un-ranked and just about as good as we are. Just because Tech is 10-1 and ranked #7 doesn’t mean anything. Just because Tech is second in the nationn in rushing offense and #1 in the nation in time of possession; well, that means nothing. They don’t throw very much! Well, just because that big tall receiver at Tech leads the nation in yards per catch and top ten in receiving yards; that doesn’t mean anything either. Just because UGA died and we have a terrible defense, that means absolutely nothing. We have 52 bars in Athens and that more per square block than they have near the Tech campus. So you see, after we get beat, we have plenty of places to get drunk and miles of sidewalks to pass out on.

1998 – An apparent GT fumble on the Jacket’s final drive is ruled as down and the Jackets go on the kick a field goal with 3 seconds on the clock to win 21-19.

1999 – With the score tied at 48, 13 seconds on the clock, and the ball at GT’s 2 yard line, UGA decides to go for the touchdown instead of the sure field goal. Jasper Sanks “fumbles” the ball and Tech recovers to send the game into overtime. The Jackets go on to win 51-48 and the local media creates a circus over the “fumble” which was later shown to have actually been down.

2000 – GT jumps out on UGA early, prompting legendary UGA radio personality Larry Munson to say the Jackets are moving the ball on the Bulldogs like UGA “was Wake Forest of Maryland or Somebody”. Tech goes on to win decisively and Tech fans like myself can be seen walking around in gold shirts that say “Tech Fans for Donnan…And Quincy Carter too!”

2002 – 51-7…

2004 – Reggie Ball throws the ball away on fourth down. UGA fans claim he can’t count. GT fans claim the officials failed up to update the down notifier in the endzone, confusing the Jackets.

2005 – Thomas Flowers benefits from obviously missed clipping calls on two big punt returns to swing field position and give UGA the edge and the win.

2006 – The refs choke on their whistles and fail to blow a play dead as Tony Taylor pulls a fumble out of the pile and runs for a TD in a game that ended 15-12 in UGA’s favor.

2008 – 45-42…Roddy Jones is still running down the sideline!

These historical references have fueled a rivalry that lasts 365 days a year and goes well beyond just football games. GT vs. UGA games sell out in every sport available. The baseball and basketball series are especially heated. Fans of UGA and GT make a hobby of cheering against each other any chance they get. If UGA’s basketball team played against the Russian national team or if their baseball team played against a Cuban national team, I’d still pull against the Dawgs.

A rivalry as old and heated as GT versus UGA obviously goes well beyond just sports venues and finds its way into neighborhoods and offices throughout the state. Growing up in central Georgia as an UGA fan (my dad is an UGA alum) I learned all of the old insults that were used regularly against Tech. Having spent the past 20 years attending and cheering for Tech, I’ve heard most of the insults that are used against UGA…

UGA fans call GT fans geeks, yechies, nerds, bugs, bumble bees, yellow maggots, NATS (North Avenue Trade School, a joke based on GT’s address and location), and just about anything else they can think of to make light of GT’s academic reputation or unique mascot the Yellow Jacket.

GT fans call UGA fans mutts, leg humpers, UGAG, rednecks, boo dawgs, ditch diggers, and just about anything else we can think of to make light of UGA’s lower academic standards and way overused mascot, the bulldog.

UGA fans call Bobby Dodd Stadium the “Joke by Coke”, while making fun of the seating capacity and ancient facilities. They were particularly partial to our “Mystery Liquid” and crowded sight lines before the stadium upgrade.

GT fans prefer using “Sanford and Son Stadium” instead of Sanford Stadium when referring to UGA’s home field and the sewage issues (and odors) that have been known to arise there.

UGA fans make fun of the lack of women on Tech’s campus while claiming that GT recruits its cheerleaders from local women’s colleges.

GT fans discuss the loose morals of UGA co-eds and their tobacco chewing habits while steadfastly defending the intelligence and integrity of the women that do grace Tech’s campus.

UGA fans claim that the local newspapers are partial to Tech athletics.

Tech fans claim that the favorable coverage is obviously directed in the Dawgs’ direction.

UGA fans make fun of the fact that GT doesn’t always sell out every home game, despite evidence otherwise.

GT fans make fun of the fact that UGA’s stands “bleed red” in the third quarter, during losing efforts, despite the fact that the stands may have been full at the beginning of the game.

UGA fans claim that Tech “lies and cheats.”

GT fans point to UGA’s past NCAA scrutiny in response.

UGA fans bash GT for taking so many Northern recruits and having so many out of state alums.

GT fans bash on UGA for being afraid to go on the road to play a real out of conference opponent that isn’t located close to home here in the South.

The insults, jibes, and accusations go on 365 days a year. There is no possible way anyone could catalogue them all. The ones listed above are the obvious ones that take about five minutes to crank out on short notice. The list will surely be longer this time next season. GT and UGA fans will be sure to jump on any news stories that happen to put their rival in a bad light, such as the misguided UGA fan who ran through security at Hartsfield here in Atlanta and caused the airport to be evacuated and shutdown for several hours. The idiot was trying to make his flight to the Ole Miss game…Tech fans will glean a years worth of jokes from that fellow and his mug shot that was published complete with a Georgia t-shirt. We widely wondered why Mark Richt didn’t recruit him to play running back. The guy was obviously pretty fast. Who knows…He might have been the next “Hershel Walker”…

All the Benadryl in Athens ain’t going to stop the pain and swelling that results from the attack launched by the Jackets a little less than 24 hours from now. In fact, probably by this time tomorrow night the stands will have bled out of all the red and black and it will be running down the sidewalks of North Avenue slinking its way back to the puppy crate called Sanford Stadium. For all the stupid bloggers on here that say Tech struggled against Vandy, well they did…..in the first half. CPJ did his halftime magic, and dominated the second half. Won by 25 I think. Tech will struggle with uga in the first half, just as they do with most teams they’ve played this year. Tech will open the whoopa$$ can in the third quarter.

What about the equation: Kentucky beat Auburn, Georgia loses to Kentucky after Kentucky beat Auburn and now Auburn almost beat Alabama so now Tech will beat Georgia because Kentucky beat Vanderbilt and Tech beat Vanderbilt so that makes Tech at least as good as Kentucky which beat Auburn and Georgia. Yeah, but Kentucky got beat by Mississippi State and we beat Mississippi State. Therefore since Kentucky beat Georgia and Auburn, Mississippi State is at least as good as Auburn which almost beat Alabama. That means Tech beats Georgia because the whole SEC is inbred and the ACC is better.

GT romps in this one. Joe Cox, Willie Martinez and UGAG is a joke this year. GT puts 50+ on the puppies and they go to 6-6 and are eating pizza at the Papa Johns Bowl. Nesbitt, Dwyer, Peeples, Allen, Thomas, Wright and Jones are way too much for the lowly dawgs to handle. In addition, Joe Cox is pathetic. Night game at Bobby Dodd will be even more electric if this game needed any more for GT fans. The home crowd will help our defense especially and I expect DMorgan to have a big night. Burnett’s going to get another one this year too! May be close at the half but we wont punt in the second half unless its in the bag.

Tech is so good, UGA should not be on the field with them. This is one special Tech team. Here is what I see though, if UGA can make it past the intital 2 or 3 scores Tech puts up and stay within 2 scores they will beat GT. If UGA can force a couple of turnovers, anywhere on the field, they will beat GT. If UGA can keep from turning over the ball, they will beat GT. If UGA will not commit stupid penalties they will beat GT. The rub is this, UGA has not done that all year. My guess is this, UGA 38 GT 21.

Urban’s 4 keys to winning include contorlling turnovers. Georgia has got to get a grip on that. Urban says you have to AT LEAST get 2 1st downs, then punt to their 30 yard line. Turnovers are like a 14 point swing. It’s how the Gators smashed those dogs. If Georgia doesn’t IMPLODE again, they should win. But, as many have said, that’s a big “IF” Georgia usually falls on its own sword. Go Gators!

I love how the UGA and SEC fans forget about how the doggies have played all year and think they can win this game. And how UGA fans keep thinking “we won 7 years in a row, you won 1 out of 8 and will lose again.”
What have you seen all year from your defense and from Joe Cox that makes you think suddenly you will stop GT’s O and Cox will play error free? And you beat Chan Gailey 7 times, not CPJ.

Its is finally the day to get the bugs payed back for all the smacking they’d been doing since last year. Last year, Tech’s offense averaged 24.4 points a game. This year: 36.0. For the UGA fans out there, that’s nearly a 50% increase.

Last year’s team was 8-3 when it faced UGA (in Athens). This year’s team is 10-1 going into tomorrow’s game (in Atlanta).

Last year’s Tech team had a 3rd-down conversion rate of 36%. The 2009 squad clocks in at 48.7% (3rd in the nation).

This year’s GT team averages 449.6 yards a game, while the 2008 group was at 372.5 (a 77.1 ypg increase).

Yeah, wait till everyone has a chance to plan for the Jackets. Like, you know, that entire 2008 season worth of footage that every team had on Tech.
