UGA in an upset? Tech in a blowout? Your thoughts, please

Here's vivid proof Georgia actually did tackle Roddy Jones. Once. (AJC photo by Pouya Dianat)

OK, folks. You know what I think will happen. (Georgia Tech 42, Georgia 27.) You’ve heard my phony-baloney rationale: Tech is the better and more consistent team. Now I’m asking: What do you think will happen?

Tech blowout? Georgia upset? Overtime at Bobby Dodd? (It happened 10 years ago, you’ll recall.) Questionable call proving decisive? (That has happened a time or two, has it not?) Roddy flying past Reshad down the sideline again? A phantom fumble returned for the winning touchdown? A fourth-down throwaway? Tim Wansley with a seal-the-game INT? Tim Jennings with a seal-the-game INT? Gary Lee with a kickoff return through the fog?

I’m fairly certain you’ve had enough of my blather. I’m also certain you have detailed thoughts on the matter. Please feel free to share. Sharing is good. Sharing is cleansing. Sharing is why I’m here.

I leave you with this one factoid: In the Associated Press preseason poll, one of these teams was ranked No. 13; the other was No. 15. Anyone recall which was higher?

Josh Nesbitt will be coaching Junior High running backs in 2 years? And what, may I ask, will Joe Cox be doing? Holding a clipboard for the starting quarterback of the semi-pro Locust Grove Tics? I’ll bet he’ll even sweat at that task.

I like tech winning it 38-23. UGA will have a lot of penalties. They will get mad when we start rolling over them in the running game and then start hitting some long passes to Thomas and Hill. They will get frustrated and start hitting late out of bounds and that will spell the end. Coach Johnson won’t let tech lose this game band they will be healed up and prepared after the bye week. Georgia definately can pass the ball some and they have been running it pretty decent too but the Jackets will be too strong with all of the playmakers on offense and with Morgan rushing Cox (who has stopped him all year long? He’s a beast). UGA plays tough for a half or maybe 3 quarters but tech pulls this one out.

Hey you bunch of SEC ballwipes, you lead the nation in Net Punting. Is that because the ball carries farther in the air of an SEC stadium or is it because Butler just happens to be a great punter, and would be no matter what conference he would be playing in? Tech leads the nation in time of possession. Is it because the clocks run slower in the ACC or is because their offense is so good at running the ball on the ground that they keep the other teams offense sitting on the bench? I guess the officiating in the SEC is the reason UGA is 116 out of 120 schools for fewest penalties and fewest yards from penalties per game. It couldn’t be because the Puppies just can’t stay disciplined enough to keep from having the yellow rags thrown on their thug-style of play. The SEC doesn’t have anything to do with team discipline or coaching or I guess it does because being a frickin thug is the only way to win in the SEC. And the Pups aren’t even good enough thugs to win all their games in the Almighty frickin SEC!

We’re really not all that terrible. So what if we lost to KenSUCKy, we played a real good game against Tennessee Tech. So what if we got embarrassed by the Volunteers and humiliated by the Gators. We managed to squeak by a great Auburn team that is un-ranked and just about as good as we are. Just because Tech is 10-1 and ranked #7 doesn’t mean anything. Just because Tech is second in the nationn in rushing offense and #1 in the nation in time of possession; well, that means nothing. They don’t throw very much! Well, just because that big tall receiver at Tech leads the nation in yards per catch and top ten in receiving yards; that doesn’t mean anything either. Just because UGA died and we have a terrible defense, that means absolutely nothing. We have 52 bars in Athens and that more per square block than they have near the Tech campus. So you see, after we get beat, we have plenty of places to get drunk and miles of sidewalks to pass out on.

Nope, I just get tired of all the SEC is better than everybody but God Almighty talk. Why don’t we just make the SEC Florida, Alabama, LSU, and Ole Miss, with all the rest of the team (Including Georgia) optional only if they are having a good year. That way when a team is having a down year their poor showing won’t tarnish the precious frickin Almighy image of SEC football.

I posted those stats earlier to show that the Tech and Georgia are actually fairly evenly matched even though Tech leads in more catagories. They don’t lead by much in some of the key catagories and Georgia leads in the areas that show that even with all the trash talked about Martinez, you still have a pretty decent defense. But, none of those stats mean anything outside of the Glow-In-The-Dark SEC Better Than Everybody Else Frickin Conference.

ARe you talking about the four and twenty elders that surround the throne in heaven? Is that the group of experts that decreed the SEC as the anointed conference for all football? Give me a frickin break!

No doubt there are some good teams in the SEC. But, there are some good teams in other conferences as well. Just because they don’t always play against the SEC doesn’t make their stats or records any less legitimate than those of the SEC. It is a piss poor argument to keep throwing that up when someone begins to do some comparing of stats to see how teams measure up against one another.

I could see it if we were comparing Division 1 FBS teams with Division 1 FCS teams. But that is not what those stats are, and they do mean something when comparing within Division 1 FBS which both Tech and Georgia are.
