Turnovers are a symptom, but they're not the problem itself. (AP photo by John Amis)
In the grand scheme, the Kentucky loss should be a blessing. It should yield the sort of clarity needed when quality control has slipped. A coach can fool himself for a while, but when he loses at home to Kentucky after leading by 14 points, he has to acknowledge the obvious. Doesn’t he?
Even as he approached a game against the best team in the state his Georgia Bulldogs long ruled, Mark Richt still wouldn’t address the greater issue, at least not on the record. “I’ve never been one to focus on several things at one time,” he said Wednesday. This week he would speak only of Georgia Tech, saying, “My feeling right now is on the next game; it’s such a crucial game for our program.”
But there he’s wrong. Beating Tech might mean the difference between a bowl in Nashville and one in Shreveport, but winning at Bobby Dodd Stadium won’t cure the systemic ill. On the contrary, it might offer Richt another reason not to change, and if that’s the case, this would be the one time when beating an in-state rival proved injurious to a program’s long-term health.
Because Georgia must change to keep pace, not just with Tech but with Tennessee and Kiffin and Auburn and Chizik. (Forget Florida and Alabama and LSU — they’ve already lapped the Bulldogs.) And it isn’t a one-year blip, as apologists insist, but a trend. In the first five seasons under Richt, Georgia played for the SEC title three times, winning twice, and had a record of 52-13. In these past four seasons, Georgia hasn’t reached the conference championship game and is 36-14, having gone 2-2 against Kentucky.
Think hard about that last part. Vince Dooley lost four times to the Wildcats in a quarter-century of coaching. Ray Goff lost once to Kentucky in six tries, Jim Donnan once in five. Richt has now done it twice. It’s one thing to lose to Florida, as Richt has managed seven times in nine tries, something else again to lose to a basketball school.
Asked about the need for change in his program on the SEC teleconference this week, Richt instead dissected the Kentucky loss. “Turnovers were the story of that game,” he said. “If it was zero-zero in turnovers or we’d have won the turnover battle, that’s a different game.” And it’s true that Georgia had four turnovers to Kentucky’s none, but ultimately Richt seemed to concede the futility of his argument: “Of course, you can’t throw out the turnovers.”
And you can’t. There’s no reason Georgia should be giving the ball to a lesser team four times without once being able to snatch it back. There’s no reason Georgia should be next-to-last in the nation in turnover margin, no reason it should rank 116th among 120 teams in penalties. Richt and his staff have stopped coaching effectively and have begun to rely on recruiting to see them through, and when you lose to Kentucky you see why recruiting is never enough. (If it were, Ron Zook would be Urban Meyer.)
No matter what happens against Tech, Richt will have to change his staff and his approach if he hopes again to play in the Georgia Dome for anything more than a Chick-fil-A Bowl trophy. Is there one Bulldog assistant who has gotten the most from his charges? Mike Bobo? Jon Fabris? John Jancek? Stacy Searels? Dave Van Halanger? Willie Martinez?
Forget this staff’s perceived February successes; even Rodney Garner, the chief recruiter, has insisted: “I’m a coach who recruits,” and not the other way around. But even with the gifted freshmen on campus — Branden Smith, Orson Charles, Washaun Ealey, Rantavious Wooten, Aaron Murray, Marlon Brown — is there any assurance they’ll flourish under these coaches?
Mark Richt is a smart man. He has to realize declining results call for an upgrade in standards. He has to know the only way back to the pinnacle of the SEC isn’t to stay the course but to change the navigators. He has to grasp this. Doesn’t he?

Valid points Mark, but the die has been cast and change is on the horizon. The Tech game will have little to do with UGA coaches trying to save their jobs and more with the very same impressing possible new suitors.

Mark, you are right again. I think the coaches actually gave up on coaching 2 years ago. I don’t think they know what to do now. As I learned in management many years ago, the old saying is true that when you have ignorant people and you decide to have a meeting (or in this case form a coaching staff), all you get is a pool of ignorance. I kind of see this as what has happened at UGA. I don’t think making any changes in strategy or coaching style will accomplish anything. The program needs some different thinking and nobody has ever had much success changing anyone’s thinking. You just have to start with new people.

I’m afraid richt won’t make any changes just to show he can’t be swayed by public opinion rather than out if any type of loyalty. It is so obvious that a change us needed that he might not do it just to prove he is the head coach. Head coaches can be very defensive but since the dawgs have no defense maybe he will make the necessary changes!

Mark, I enjoy your columns and look forward to reading them, but you’re not making me feel very optimistic about the Dawgs lately. All this negative, negative, negative. How about a positive column about UGA for a change? Maybe focus on the condition of the football field, which has been great compared to last year when we had drought. Or how clean the uniforms are before the games? Just something positive, man, you’re bringing me down. Although I agree that Richt is unlikely to change anything with the staff win or lose vs. Tech.

Thank you Mark. Thanks very much. All your points all year on this selfish head coach of ours are dead on, and I’m glad the media finally caught on to what a fraud this guy is. Mark Richt is a fraud. He won big early because of the sorry state of the conference (declining UT, UF with Zook, typical SC, down Bama), Yech with Gailey, and Brian Van Gorder. UGA won in spite of Richt’s pitiful offense then. Now, our offense is slightly better but still outdated, but there’s no Van Gorder, and the conference is upgraded. Richt is selfish and blind to the fact that he’s let this program slip considerably. I want him out, and MANY other Bulldogs know the Mark Richt ship has sailed in Athens. Thanks again.

Let’s concede that CMR is the most “competitive person on earth” for arguments sake, which we hear ad nauseum from players and especially Pollack. That quality is separate and distinct from the quality of being able to correct a problem, intelligence, and success. Oftentimes our most competitive friend is also our most stubborn. How many of us have seen a friend who is a good golfer lose his long game, hit drive after drive into the woods, and refuse to put up his driver. That friend may be ultra competitive but his competitiveness is trumped by his own stubborness because something worked in the past he continues to do it and refuses to change. He will lose and lose big now. CMR-Willie is your driver, put him in the bag. While you are at it, put your five-wood Bobo in the bag also. His slice will never straighten out.

Mr. Bradley—Your continued shots at Coach Richt and the UGA program never cease to amaze me.There is not discounting the fact that we have had a bad year this year, but trend. We did finish #2 in the nation after ‘07 and went 10-3 in ‘08. As far as Kentucky goes, Coach Brooks has that program on a much higher level than when the previous coaches you mentioned coach.I have not doubt that , if Coach Richt has the patience to put up with ignorant media and so-called fans, he will make necessary changes and get us back to the top! Of course, Bradley, as do a lot of others, you are crediting Richt with too much intelligence. I don’t think he is quite as smart as s lot of people think. I will put forth the opinion that, instead, he has been quite lucky. Luck makes up for a lot.

1. Willlie demoted to DB coach, New DC comes in.
2. Bobo demoted to QB coach.
3. Mark Richt takes over calling plays again.
4. Fabris gone.
Anyone who thinks CMR will bring in a NEW OC has lost their mind. The offense is his baby that he brought in from fsu.. Bobo is his protege and calls CMR plays.. I only see the possibilty of 2 new coaches. DC and Special teams..

Comparing Kentuckys team to teams of the past is wrong. The Dooley years was at a time where all big college teams picked all and as many great players they wanted while teams like Kentucky got average players at best but now with the scholarship limits the big schools can’t sign all the blue chippers. Just look at the top 25 and you’ll see teams like Boise St who were once homecoming picks for the big schools while teams like Georgia, Oklahoma, Nortre Dame are trying to get into ANY bowl. this does not hide the fact that so many other teams have Gotten better while Georgia has become stationary. I don’t know what needs to be done to turn this DAWG team around except have patience and see if these young players, which we have so many of, will live up to their 5 star high school ranking. Maybe just maybe Coach Richt can get the right prayers answered and replace coaches when and where needed

Florida…I agree with that one. They’ve lapped the nation, though, so there is no shame in that. For the record; I agree that UGA is not in good shape right now. Other potential coaching candidates will then see how a quality coach is utimately treated by these yahoos and will then shun the job, and Georgia will be stuck in another lost 20 years. Just like the end of the Dooley era and those under Goff and Donnan. Come on Georgia idiots, fire Mark Richt, fire Mark Richt!!! You and all the so called what have you done for me this week Bulldog fan deserve anything you get if you keep working towards getting Richt fired, which whether you admit or not, is what you are writing towards. The short attention span and the small mindedness is amazing. All this coach has done is to run a clean program with high moral and ethical standards; the parents and the kids love and admire; who has brought nothing but good to this University. I grew up in Athens during the Dooley years and this coach has brought that same level of class back to UGA. Sure I am as disappointed as anyone with the level of play this year. But i have the utmost confidence in Coach Richt and if I was in the position to decide his future, I would afford him as much time as necessary. He deserves it. Do you think the record amount of money that has been pouring in is because of your good looks and award winning journalism? There is nothing wrong with some agitation and change. Mark:
I am amazed at the short term perspective that you are exhibiting, in lieu of expert analysis. Florida, Alabama, and LSU have lapped Georgia and the rest of the SEC? Maybe during this current cycle, which in the SEC is a 2-3 year climb up the ladder followed by an inevitable step backwards. Florida will have to replace Tebow after this season, and that will bring them back to the pack. Alabama will find out that success won’t keep $aban in Tuscaloosa because he is restless (see LSU), and that will bring them back to the pack. LSU is probably going to fire Les Miles after the 2010 season, because they are already drifting back to the pack. I am an Auburn grad but my father is a Florida grad. Recently we attended the Florida – Vanderbilt game in Gainesville. I was amazed at how much they depended on Tebow, even to beat Vanderbilt. Florida will come back to the pack next season, because Tebow will leave too big of a hole for them to fill. Those Meyer to Notre Dame rumors may turn out to be true. Georgia caught a bad break when Stafford left early and Moreno left early. If they had stayed, Georgia would have been pretty stout this year. Stafford leaving early is the main reason Georgia stumbled this year.

Amazing how many in Dawg Nation refuse to see the obvious.
This program is getting worse – not better. We drag the anchor with penalties, turnovers, points allowed, yardage allowed. Yet we have been among the Top 5 or 10 in recruiting almost every year. Our players are out of position, not prepared for gameday, execute poorly and have sometimes laid down on Martinez and given up.
We have not prepared even ONE QB for next season. I submit Richt and his band should go but there will likely only be a couple of other coaching changes that will help but not provide the player performance needed to win the SEC. This will eventually be Richt’s downfall.
The pity is that the players, students, alums and all Dawg Fans will see another year or two of embarrassment before it happens.

By the time Roddy Jones finished tightroping his way down Georgia’s sideline, the dog nation had been put in their rightful place from pre-season national champion to real-season state runner up.
There were many big plays in Georgia Tech’s 45-42 victory over georgia (Tech’s new bitch) at Sanford Stadium (Tech’s home away from home) last season. But none was bigger than Jones’ 54-yard, game-winning touchdown run with 7 minutes, 13 seconds remaining.
Cheers ring out every time the run is played on Tech’s scoreboard during games. There are more than a dozen versions of it on Youtube.com that have been watched more than 40,000 times. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLlAAkUYZ1Y
It capped a comeback from a 28-12 halftime deficit (that’s 16 points if you are a Georgia fan). It came with a little more than 7 minutes remaining and really put an exclamation mark on a third quarter beat down/fourth quarter bitch slapping that has silenced all but the rabid azzholes of the dog nation for an entire year.

The fact that the rivalry is back should be a celebration dog fans!!
I like to beat the “trembling Chihuahuas” and changing their coaching staff after they loose…is not going to help in the next year or two.
Get used to loosing to Tech, (you were already used to loosing to FL, LSU & AL), the new Tech boss is in town and just for fun look at the indicators:
1- GT wins with less “star” power.
2- GT is recruiting for defense, this was our “weak” game, wait for the next two years when we have a solid group of players on defense and the “high school offense” gets the recruiting players that you’ll said “wont go to Tech”.
3-GT has the better coach, there is just no more to be said here.
4- GT team is primarily juniors, they will be seniors next year (no guaranty to improve here) but the odds are in our favor.
5-Dogs will be training a new coaching staff next year, and a new QB. Not good!
But I do wish you the best in the changes to come, as a solid UGA team will be a better win for GT at the end of the season and competition makes for fun rivalry…see you Saturday pups, WE ARE WAITING your “chihuahuas” at North ave.

I believe you are right about the cycle , but I am also afraid that UGA is in a down cycle of several years if for no other reason the QB situation you are very right about stafford hurting the team the most ,and what are we looking at next year for a QB nobody knows.
I think Auburn , and Tenn are on the up cycle , Fla and Ala cant maintain their current level and their coaches are liable to move on . Kentucky is better but still Kentucky vandy is a very clean college , ark is going to be tougher than people think , south carolina will continue to be middling , i think the next few years will be ripe for a team like auburn ,tenn, or ga to make a run. Of those three i believe Tenn is the most likely to impload .

Mark we have issues and we need change.
Alabama and Florida have clearly moved ahead. But tell me again how LSU has lapped us? We split with them the past two years, mauling them in Baton Rouge and losing a close, nail biter with more than a questionable call to boot in Athens.
LSU is 12-2, 8-5 and 8-3 over the past 3 years. Georgia is 11-2, 10-3 and right now 6-5. This has been an awful season. But I think most Tiger fans would agree, that they have their own issues. Big ones starting at the head, not the assistants.
I understand your gloom and doom for Georgia. It has been that way for weeks now…about the time you quit telling us that defenses had figured out Paul Johnson’s offense. But lets not embellish on what is admittedly a difficult situation.

In some ways Bradley is on the Mark. But LSU “lapping” Georgia? I don’t think so. LSU got a gift from Marc Curles and Michael Watson this year at UGA, then squeaked by Mississippi State. As for Alabama, check their 5 or 8-year record. There are some holes there. Bradley has successfully laid out the “Chicken Little” scenario. Bradley is the best at one thing: BEING NEGATIVE!

Shock value. Write exclusively for the big hits. Geez….
How many times do we have to talk about the same thing over and over? At the very least, we will have a new defensive coordinator and I’m betting we will have 1-2 more new assistants as well.
This is a huge game, Mark, not because of bowl implications. It’s because another win for Tech means they finally have a winning streak against us. It means when you talk about best teams in Georgia, Tech will have to start the discussion, not the Dawgs. Win this game and Georgia fans can be comforted that even though we’re at our deepest depths and Tech is at it’s highest point, they still can’t take us over. That’s why it’s huge.

I’m sick of hearing from bulldog fans that are complaining about other bulldog fans because they are complaining about the losing and the poor coaching with perceived talent that is supposed to be superior to teams like tech and Kentucky. VanGorder was a big reason we were competing at a higher level nationally in the past. Richt is a good coach but who cares if he can’t find assistants that do their job. You supposedly die hard ga fans wake up. The rest of us are still Ga fans but we know that something has to be done. I wish Richt had half the balls that Paul Johnson does. He is the man! I’m not a tech fan but I am a Paul Johnson fan. What’s funny about tech fans is that most of them don’t even know they have a football team until they win a couple of games and even then most of them don’t know who their players are…Sorry that’s true. Fire Willie Martinez and everything else will fall into place.

Several random thoughts:
1. My first doubts about this staff date back to DJ Shockley’s senior season. Poor coaching decisions cheated DJ out of the chance to lead two potentially game-winning drives: first, against Auburn (coaches let AU run last minute off clock at goal-line instead of allowing score and putting ball back in DJ’s hands); and second, against West Virginia in the Sugar (coaches let a slow Germanic punter run 20+ yards for 1st down on a fake punt with no one covering the fake, again taking the ball out of DJ’s hands with 90+ seconds to go and the game on the line). For all the praise of DJ’s character that year and others, the coaches totally dropped the ball and hosed him–otherwise, DJ just might have led a one-loss (to UF, only because Joe T couldn’t quite get it done) team that year. Nice coaching.
2. Speaking of fake punts, do we have a scheme for defending them at UGA? Why are they so successful against us? Do we actually play 11 guys on special teams plays? Or do we just put 7 out there?
3. When was the last time our defense played with outright meanness? I mean, like “Nick Saban is going to call your momma the nastiest things he can think of if you don’t hit and wrap” meanness? The 1980’s?
4. When was the last time our O-line absolutely roadgraded another good team? Why do our O lineman so often (a) get injured, (b) leave the program, (c) not live up to their hype, (d) seem to regress or (e) have to be shuffled from spot to spot? Why do we always seem to be short on quality OLs?
5. Even though the schedule lightens next year, does anyone think a freshman with no snaps can help us win more than 8 games next year? Even with the embarassing riches on offense? Even Peyton had a tough rookie campaign at Tenn, and I don’t think we have a Peyton in the stables at UGA.
6. One optimistic note: we are a tipped ball vs. SC, an AJ block vs. ASU and a Cox career night at Ark away from being 3-8. But for all the abyssmal performances, we should have won vs.UK, basically got hosed vs. LSU and were a couple of plays from turning the Okie State game in our favor–all of which would have left us 9-2 now. Some teams (think Iowa) play poorly and nevertheless win all those games. We didn’t this year. With the right 2 or 3 assistants, how does this year change?
7. The Jackets are already strutting (can nerds strut?) and slapping their pocket protectors. No upset predictions here, but what do you do if you are a Trade Schooler and you lose this game? How do you face yourself Sunday morning?

Clearly – and I know I will get grief over this – would the Ga-LSU call have changed the direction of the Ga program, really made that much of a difference, or does Ga have a celebration target on its’ back from last year?

If you left it up to the people who blog, Pete Carrol would be fired, Jeff Fisher with the Titans would have been long gone, Oklahoma would be searching for a new coach, etc. I agree changes need to be made. We need a defensive coordinator who knows how to pressure, knows how to cover, and know how to make adjustments. We need a special teams coach who understands how to cover kickoffs. But, isn’t it a bit premature to turn the entire program upside down. One thing I am sure of. Mark Richt’s charactor or his religious beliefs are not the problem. I don’t know why I even read these blogs. It’s either juvenile, or negative, or hate.

Haven’t heard anything about Tuberville. Other than Kirby Smart the only other name I have heard tossed about from inside the program is Tommy West, who would be an excellent choice. What has Georgia’s senior class(2006 recruiting class) has produced. In these past four seasons, Georgia hasn’t reached the conference championship game and is 36-14, having gone 2-2 against Kentucky.
Now take a look a the Gators———–
Because it’s been four years since Florida put together the No. 2 recruiting class in the nation in 2006, it’s OK to judge just how good this class is. And it’s an easy call.
This is the greatest recruiting class in school history — and one of the greatest in the history of college football.
This class has won two national championships and two SEC titles, with a chance to possibly win a third in both.
It features a Heisman Trophy winner (quarterback Tim Tebow), a national defensive player of the year (middle linebacker Brandon Spikes), three All-Americans, five All-SEC performers and 12 academic All-SEC honors. And this is the winningest class in SEC history with a record of 46-6.
And this is all about coaching, Georgia class was nearly the same as Florida’s.
The Gators had the # 2 class and the dawgs had # 4, so there you have it.

Mark Bradley’s analysis is spot-on. The comparison between Richt’s first five years and the last four years says it all. Richt has slipped, and it’s coaching – or the lack thereof – that’s to blame.
I imagine that if Richt stays, UGA will be better than this year, maybe 8-4 or 9-3, with an occasional 10-2, which is acceptable to fans at many schools, but not at UGA, since the losses will be to Florida, Alabama, LSU, Tennessee, or other SEC teams which will keep the Dawgs from playing for the SEC championship.
The continued decline, even with the recruiting successes, is pretty clear evidence that the problem is poor coaching. Fans have made it clear on the football blogs this year that they’re tired of the situation and want a coaching change, either Richt himself, or the assistants. Damon Evans, however, seems to be reluctant to change anything, so the losing will likely continue.
Many people don’t want to acknowledge this unsavory fact, but Richt’s recruits, while loaded with talent, tend to be players with little character or self-discipline, and this is why so many of them end up in jail at least once during their tenure in Athens. Insiders know that there are more problem players than the ones we read about.
So as long as Richt remains in Athens, UGA will not play for the SEC championship, will seldom if ever play in a BCS bowl, and will only occasionally finish in the rankings.
Evans and the administration will stick their heads in the sand and ignore their wake-up call for at least another year, so next year the blogosphere will be a repeat of this year’s grumblings.

GaGator makes a good case. The problem at UGA is coaching. Things aren’t likely to change while Richt is head coach. Georgia will have better years than this (a disaster by any standards), but they will not be good enough to overtake the top teams like Florida and Alabama.
With all of this so obvious, why are fans who are demanding a coaching change being criticized so loudly?

Loyal Bulldog….How do you know that CMR has not had a sit down with Mark? And CMR told him to keep it under wraps until an appropriate announcement is made, true journalist would honor that request. Relationships between newspaper writers and head coaches are not something that are made public. Neither party would admit to that prior to a press release or press announcement. Forging those types of relationships take a long time to cultivate and are based on the trust of both parties. CMR and the AJC reporters are good professionals. Both know what they are doing and how to do it. If you read between the lines you can sometimes tell what the gist of the next article on the subject will be. Covering a national team like UGA is a practiced science and relationships are the linchpin of that relationship.

I agree with the above that Van Gorder must have been the reason for our early success. Does anyone remember in Richt’s first year how he fumbled the time management during the Auburn game (Tech game too if I remember correctly). How does one do that after being an offensive coordinator for 10 years at FSU? I was a big fan of Richts until recently but as Bradley says, the program has been going steadily downhill for several years, except for a couple of 3 or 4 game spurts. This years team is the worst GA team I’ve seen since I’ve been watching, which is from the early 70s. There are a few instances of indivual good play but not as a team. I’m not a coach, but anyone who follows football closely is qualified to know a quality team and program. We ain’t it.

This debacle of a season comes down to four major issues:
1) Turnovers. A good team can lose to anybody when they turn the ball over 4 or 5 times in a game. An average team will lose almost everytime when the turnover ratio is where Georgia’s is this season. Playing in the SEC doesn’t allow you those type of mistakes.
2) Penalties: Mark Richt has to get serious here. ANY player who makes a careless stupid penalty needs to be jerked from the game immediately. I don’t care if your name is AJ Green, Rennie Curran, or Drew Butler. This will solve the problem.
3) Defensive Philosophy: Willie’s bend and break has to go. No further explanation required.
4) Blocking: Our offensive line got pushed around this year. We should have been racking up big yards on the ground. Our offensive scheme relies on play action(David Greene was the master of play action). Without the fear of a strong running attack, our offense is crippled. You don’t need a Knowshon if a hole is there. Any decent back should be able to get 5-6 yds if the line does its job.
OK, one more for good measure.. once again, no pressure on the QB.
If any one of the four major issues was not present this year, we would have at least 2-3 more wins. In a year where we had to replace 90% of our offensive firepower and play one of the toughest schedules in country. That would be about right.

Richt better change alot of his staff and beat Florida next year or he is gone!!! I think coach Richt is a great guy and good offensive coordinator!! But his record against teams ranked higher than us is not even 300. He was brought in here because he used to beat Florida at FSU but he hasn’t got it done!!! I hope Richt is praying he can turn this program around but out of the good years we have had we always fail to win them all because we always seem to not show up in a half of football!! With the talent this team has we should not never lose more than 2 games!!! How are we ever gonna get a NC if we can’t even win the SEC East!!! We always seem to lose to Florida and when we do beat them we lost to Tennessee!!! We need a coach that can get us to beat Tennessee and Florida!!! Georgia Tech is a rivalry but they are not in our division!!!! To be champions of anything you have to first win your Division!!!!

One year does snot define a coach. Meyer had a 4 loss season, so did Miles. Carrol had a 6 loss season. Patterson has 2 bad years win/loss wise recently.
Richt:
60 wins in 6 years
70 in 7
80 in 8
To defend Mark Bradley’s argument, you’d have to conclude that Stoops, Carrol, Meyer, Paterno, Mies, Patterson should all have shook up their staffs or been fired.
Typical journalists inability to accurately predict the future.
Interesting though, bradley now thinks Georgia MIGHT win, whihc is why he wrote this. What does THAT say about this staff?

Okay, I want to throw this in before the rest of the idiots keep spewing…
Does anyone notice the similarities between UGA and FSU? FSU had some great seasons but they have dropped from the national championship talk to mid-tier bowl projection. UGA had some good seasons and now has dropped to mid-tier bowl projection. FSU does not want to see change. UGA…
I am a big Mark Richt supporter (heck I’m one of the bandwagon drivers). But change is needed in Athens from the way things are being done. I’m married to a Clemson fan for the past nine years and saw some of the same things in Tigertown, but there is a new attitude in Clemson. Yeah, they are playing in a VERY bad ACC division, but they did not do some of the same mistakes found during another Bowden led team. I just want to see a Dawg team that is disciplined.
Finally, a decent football team with a great and talented QB can do something. A great and talented team with a decent QB finishes 6-6. We had better hope that Aaron Murray is a great and talented QB as we have been told or next year is 6-6 again.

Sorry, Mark, but Kentucky was not the lesser team. Brooks has built a successful program by recruiting sound players and maintaining high academic and behavior standards. Last year, Brooks dismissed his number one quarterback prospect for an ofense that Richt would have winked at. I attended the Georgia/UK game last year and counted 13 Georgia players on the field with arrest records, including the felon, Ellerbe. I think that the decline in Georgia began with Adams when he brought his friend, Harrick, to Georgia and enrolled Tony Coles, who is presently in prison in Illinois. The housecleaning must start at the top.

If Richt stays, it will be great for sports bars, since UGA fans will flock to these places every year to watch the SEC championship game on bigscreen TV. Unfortunately we’ll be watching other teams playing for the title.
Ask yourself the question: Will UGA ever beat Florida again and win the division? And even if the Dawgs beat the Gators in an upset, there would still be those absurd inexcusable losses to teams like Kentucky that would keep us out of the championship game.
I’ve already sent my letter requesting Damon Evans to fire Richt and hire another head coach. I;m not expecting an answer, but at least I tried. Maybe if he got several thousand letters, they would have some impact.

Who is the man who retained the worst DC in this program’s history AND gave him an indefensible raise?
Who is the man who refused to bench the Red-Headed Turnover Menace after the Florida game in order to do what’s right for the FUTURE of this program, something the Red-Headed Turnover Menace has no place?
Who is the man who continues to back his two coordinators, who’s defense is 11th in the SEC and something like 80th nationally, and who’s offense is 10th in the SEC and something like 90th nationally?
Who is the man who kept Knowshon on the bench for a year, and then when he was “ready” in 2007, kept him evenly splitting carries with a far-less talented and explosive player because of his loyalty to that player, a choice which cost his team the South Carolina game that year, a game if won, hands Georgia the National Championship?
Who is the man who continually refuses to do EVERYTHING he can to compete and win against guys like Saban, Meyer, Miles, and now KIFFIN?
Does ANY of you blind gomers and Richt apologists believe for ONE MINUTE that someone like Nick Saban or Urban Meyer would:
1) have kept Willie Martinez, who has now overseen a defense which has gotten worse EVERY year he’s been the coordinator? True story. Look up the yeard allowed per game and points allowed per game yourself. They’ve gone up, EVERY YEAR under Martinez. And turnovers and sacks have gone down.
2) have stuck with the Red-Headed Turnover Menace past the Tennessee game, let alone the Florida game? No… those guys are BIG PICTURE guys. They would see that the season was lost and Joe Cox isn’t back next year, so it’s time to PREPARE FOR THE FUTURE. Because they’re smart guys who want to win, not stupidly loyal guys like a Mark Richt.
3) would be sticking by the idiotic Jon Fabris and his idiotic special teams “strategies” which are so horrendous you can’t even call them a strategy?
4) would have players that would make the kind of stupid mistakes on the field that lead to these kind of penalties and turnovers the last two year???
Here are the answers:
1) No.
2) NO.
3) Hell NO!
4) FRAK NO!
You blind gomers need to open up your frakkin’ eyes and see Mark Richt for who he is!
He’s a man who can beat the Phil Fulmers and the Tommy Tubbervilles and the Mike Shula’s of the world.
But he is not a man who can even compete with the Nick Sabans, the Urban Meyers, or hell, even the Lane Kiffins of the world.
HE COULDN’T EVEN BEAT RON ZOOK!!!
Mark Richt must go. He must be held ACCOUNTABLE for the steep decline that Georgia is in thanks to all of the horrible decisions he’s made.

I wish UGA fans would recognize that Tech and Florida are good and legit. I wish Tech fans would admit that Georgia has OWNED them the past couple decades (seriously…they win once and they own the world). And Florida, well…they pretty much don’t have to own up to anybody.

Richt and his boys can’t even change their tune in post-game interviews. It’s the same old crap. I understand about ’staying on message’, but not to the point where it reveals that you have no idea how to fix things.
But hey, what does Richt care? He banked over $7,000 TODAY, $53,000 THIS WEEK. Is that worth losing to KY and being blown out (AGAIN) by TN and FLA?

I saw you said it’s about jettisoning assistants, but it’s more than that. It is you who don’t have a clue. You and all the other Richt supporters. Here is the truth, you buffoon. People are finally waking up to the truth. How can you continue to excuse Mark Richt’s loyalty to Willie Martinez Saban and Meyer would have jettisoned Martinez years ago (truthfully they would have never hired his inept a$$ in the first place, but that’s another topic). Last year, after the season, Richt said that reviewing Martinez’s performance was not even on the table for discussion. Are you kidding me? He should have been canned years ago. At the very least, Richt could have said something to the effect of the program always striving to be the best and that all facets should be currently under review. Yet Martinez, who gave up 31 to Bama at the half, 49 to Florida (a little less, I guess, since there were defensive scores, but the point is the same), and 45 to Tech (including 26 in one quarter!) didn’t even merit a review! Forgetting the fact that Martinez is a bum, what does that say about Richt, the fact that he won’t review him and the fact that he lets his personal feelings get in the way?
It is obvious that the Emperor has no clothes. Mark Richt was successful early in his tenure because:
1. Ron Zook was at Florida (and even then, Richt went 1-2 against that moron). The fact that we lost to Florida in 2002 and 2003 was a complete disgrace.
2. Tennessee was in decline
3. Saban had just gotten the LSU juggernaut going, but it wasn’t yet in full steam (it would be starting in 2003)
4. Most importantly, he had natural born leaders on the field (i.e., Greene and Pollack) and a fiery animal and defensive genius in Brian Van Gorder, whose fire picked up the slack for what Richt lacked. BVG, DG, and DP made sure that the team had discipline and fire. Mark Richt accomplishes no such thing. How many years running have we been hearing about cleaning up the penalties? How many games do we have to watch our defenders look absolutely clueless out there? How many more games do we have to lose in such ugly fashion? What happened to the days of losing in Death Valley to LSU on a late TD in a very well played game (2003)? Now, when we lose, all hell breaks loose, and it’s a complete disaster.
WVU in 2006 Sugar Bowl
UT in 2006
UT in 2007
Bama in 2008
UF in 2008
GT in 2008
UT in 2009
UF in 2009
UK in 2009
These losses were complete and utter disasters. And that’s ignoring the defensive meltdowns in games we actually won (e.g., LSU in 2008). Those of you who don’t see these things just aren’t paying attention, plain and simple.
Now that Richt has no leaders on the team and has surrounded himself with absolute boobs as assistants, the Emperor has been exposed.
Mark Richt is a good man. He represents the university well. But being a good man is different than being a good coach. But you and the other blind homers who overlook his blind loyalty to Willie Martinez and overlook the complete and utter lack of discipline on this team and just say something moronic like “we’re just having a down year,” you just aren’t looking at the entire picture. He is not fit to be a head coach. Period. End of story.

Funny how Mark Bradley writes an article that myself and a dozen or so others have been saying since the TENN game. The only arguement I have with this poece is that CMR is not such a smart guy if he lets this type of coaching (or lack of) and this type of preperation go on for 4 years by himself and his staff. It is no secret what has happened over the the past 4 years. You have CWM as DC minus BVG, and you have 100% of CMR’s recruits minus HC Donnan’s. What this tells me is that CMR is not near as good as a recruiter as Jim Donnan. Also, when you are lucky enough to get a talent of a AJ Green, you don’t know how to deploy that weapon and do serious danger. You have to know that you need a QB to go along with the AA WR.

Been a season ticket and avid supporter of all things UGA and more specifically…UGA football for longer mthan I want to admit! I put my money where my mouth is and I give! They say if you don’t give till it hurts, then you are not really giving….trust me…I GIVE!
Bradley I understand exactly where you are coming from and your motivation…and while I agree with some of what you say re: the state of UGA’s current football team….exactly what is your point? Should the Dawgs throw in the towel? Should they lose the GT game on purpose (they will probably do say regardless) just to put an explanation point on the fact that there are problems with the program? What are you trying to say?
I wish we could take a year off from the realities of UGA and REAL college football and turn the UGA program to some of these genuises on here.like Hershel Talker and give them the opportunity to show the world just how little they actually know about coaching a football team…hiring assistanta, game planing, play calling, half time adjustments etc.! Monday morning quarter backing and recognizing that there is a problem….well my 6th grade grand son can do that! But some of you idiots come on here and talk like you know exactly what the specific problems and solutions are…and not only that, but seem to think you could resolve said problems in a week or a day! BS!
Bradley and the idiots….dont identify the problem….state your logical and sane solutions! Do you honestly expect CMR to go public and tell the world, his team, and coaching staff something like this…recruits also by the way…..We suck! My coaches suck! As soon as the season is over coachy x, y, and z are outta here! I made a mistake and thought Joe Cox would be at least an adequate qb this year…but as you all know…he sucks! Reshard Jones was rated as one of the three top HS safties in the country and we were proud that he picked UGA..BUT he sucks…cant play a lick! And if we were as good of a coaching staff as we should be..and IF we were as SMART as some of you expersts out there…certainly we should have known NOT to recruit Zeb McKenzie..the all american hihg school OL from
Parkview and the other HS all american OL..the Watts kid from sandersville who would be starting now if not for having to give up football from injuries….I mean we should have known they would be injured right? I could go on and on…but I think even the “idiott” so called experst here who shopuld in reality be running the UGA football program get the point!
CMR, in my humble waited one year too long to honestly evaluate his staffs shortcomings….and it has biten him in the butt…BIGTIME! Why dont ya’ll take a zanex..calm down…hope like hell WE can beat the hated yeller jackets Sat!
In the mean time WHEN the time is right…AFTER the season is over give the man a chance to do whatever the hell he needs to do to right the ship!

I don’t know about the other coaches but Martinez has to forced out of the UGA program and as far away as possible. Same old, same old article from an AJC writer who is mediocre at best.
“Keep up with Chizik and Auburn, and Kiffin and Tennessee” Mark beat Auburn this year (Chizik is not the answer there). I admit the game to Tennessee was awful and one of the worst games I have ever been to. However, Lane will not win more than 7 games for several years and by then, he will be out of Tennessee.
Mark Richt has seen that changes will be made and that will happen whether UGA wins or loses tomorrow at Tech.
As for Tech, you finally beat CMR and the Dawgs last year for the first time this century (century starts in 2001 FYI) and you seem like you’ve been doing it for a while when only a few years ago you were heading out to Boise, ID every year. This is a funny post: Mr. GO DAWGS!!
SO, what Eddie is saying is that UK has caught up to UGA and about to pass us by like UF, US, and LSU. This also means that Vandy and USCe has caught up to being on par with us. Nobody has past UGA by . UGA as slipped and fell to and below these teams.

Great read, Mark. I hope the answer to your last question is yes, but I have my doubts. He should have realized at the end of last season that he had huge problems, but chose to give his staff huge raises. For what? For reaching that magical 10-win threshhold that the Koolaid drinkers harp on, despite having three NFL stars on offense alone! Fact is, 10 wins was a feat in the Dooley era of 10 and 11 game seasons. In the 13 game (including bowl) era, that’s just winning 76.9% of your games. UGA does need Richt as its head coach because: mommas and daddies love to send their boy to play for him; he’ll never cheat; he won’t embarrass the school (a la Kiffin) other than a few ghastly losses in ‘08 and ‘09. But Lord, I just hope he is as smart as we think he is and will make upgrades in his staff. If he does, with the talent on hand, UGA can zip right back to competativeness (is that a word?) in the SEC. Go Dawgs. Shock the world (or at least the state) Saturday!!

Mike Addington, you don’t remember the 5-6 Dooley team that lost to Richmond? Were you out of the country in 1990, 93, 94, 95, and 96? Those were pretty damn bad years. 90- 4-7 (2-5 SEC), 93- 5-6 (2-6 SEC), 94- 6-4-1 (3-4-1 SEC), 95- 6-6 (3-5 SEC) 96- 5-6. Wasn’t there a 20 year drought where we won no SEC titles? Haven’t we won 2 SEC titles under Richt and played for 3? If memory serves have we not finished in the top 10 six times under Coach Richt? Fortunately bloggers with short selective memories don’t get to hire and fire football coaches. If that were the case Frank Beamer would have been fired at VT after 3 seasons. And the list goes on and on. Yes changes need to be made and they will be made. But firing Coach Richt at this juncture would be absolute lunacy. How many flavor of the month coaches has there been? RIch Rodriguez. Charlie Weiss. Jeff Tedford just to name a few. How many championships have they won? Brian Kelly seems to be the latest “savior” touted as the latest and the greatest. Maybe he goes to Notre Dame. Will he be the “savior” after a few years there? I bet Michigan would love to have Lloyd Carr back. Be careful what you ask for.

The way some people are talking you would think that this was the fifth losing season in a row. Last year was a ten win season. The year before a #2 1/2 finish. UGA has lost to Tech once. They may very well lose on Saturday. I get that everyone wants the NC every year. We all want to beat Florida, Tennessee, Auburn, Tech and everyone else every season. I understand that people are concerned that there is some kind of writing on the wall. I get it!
What I don’t get is that this one season has been a grinder, the poorest in Richt’s stellar career in which he took a crappy quagmire of a program and elevated to a solid program, this one rebuilding season somehow warrants the discussions about the program going down in flames and UGA suddenly being a second tier team. Now, everyone wants to kick ‘em when they are down and rub salt in the wounds.
If there is firing to be done, I trust Richt to do it. I have no say or control over it anyway. And, I think there are a lot of rich boy boosters and sports writers who quite frankly need to go soak their heads. This team is poised for great things to come. If you can’t see it, you aint lookin’.

Mark,
One bad year and you are going to pile on this man (or as I should really say.. this entire university). You writers amaze me with these obscure stats you use to determine the direction a program is heading.. Now it’s the 2 and 2 record against Kentucky. Why don’t you mention Floridas record against Mississippi the last few years and make some sort of determination.
How bout these stats.
One of only seven coaches to reach 80 wins in 8 seasons. (others include Woodruff, Carrol, Stoops , Stag, Switzer, Meyer)
2 SEC Titles Played for 3
SEC Coach of the Year twice 2002, 2005
FACT – UGA finished in the AP top ten 6 of the past 8 years..are you kidding…and you are going to pile on this man..I liken what you are doing to the eye jab of spikes only you are using a poison pen.
This man is proven…end of story.. He could retire today and go down as one the great all time coaches in UGA and SEC history.
Mark Richt knows more about his coaching staff, his team and oh yes, FOOTBALL than you or any of these other peanut galley bloggers who post on this site.
As a Georgia fan I feel proud and blessed have Mark Richt as our coach. I will go to war with him any day and something tells me his team plans to do that Saturday night.
My only hope is that win or lose Saturday night, Mark makes the decision to stay at Georgia at the end of the season and not go to Florida State or some other program. I can promise you if he leaves UGA he will be the hottest commodity on the coaching market and when he begins winning at whatever school he’s coaching you will be the first to remind us of how stupid we were to not appreciate him when he was at UGA.
Mark – Young recruits a very impressionable and for you to continue writing this crap in my opinion undermines the UGA program.
So Mark, to all you sports talk radio host and newspaper writers.. THIS BUD’s FOR YOU!!! You know everything there is to know about college football except how to PLAY it or COACH it!!!!

The sad thing is I could care less about the out come of the Tech game. While I want UGA to win, because a UGA makes the weekend. Doesn’t matter if Tech is a rival game or not. To hear alot of UGA fans. Tech is not our rival, UF is. Tech was not a rival until last year when they won, and this year because of the lackluster season UGA is having. The simple truth is as much as I want UGA to win; just to say that we beat a good quality team, UGA has no chance in this game. Whether a so called rivalry or not, noone can expect UGA to win this game with the undisciplined play by our defense, a STs unit last in the nation and giving opponets a starting field of the 40 yard line or better, and certainly not with Joe Cox at QB. As much as I want to say UGA has a chance, I don’t see it.

Why do people hold up last year’s 10-3 record as a positive?
We started out pre-season #1, had two NFL first rounders on offense and UNDERPERFORMED!
WE BLEW IT! Or, more accurately, RICHT AND THE COACHING STAFF BLEW IT!
Frankly, 10 wins seasons aren’t enough for a lot of Bulldog fans. And after this season, Richt won’t be 90 wins in 9 seasons, so even this statistic, that people continue to trumpet, will be gone.

Well – put – a wise man once said – you cannot keep doing the same things over and over and expect different results – I think that is what this coaching staff is doing –
The pro I is ok but it is time to add a new look on offense – this handing the ball off 8 yards deep and expecting your “subpar” line to block is old – the sport has changed and Ga needs to change if they want to keep up – throw in some option and wildcat – not on a Tech scale but more on a FL scale – you cannot be predictable on every play and expect to win them all.
yes, turnovers are a problem – but sometimes your defense has to “man up” and stuff the other team – something our defense has failed to do this year
Take the LSU game when they let them run for a touchdown at the end – yes the penalty and k/o where bad – but the defense has to put in some effort
Same with the fumble on the kickoff in the KY game – the defense seemed to just go out there and say oh well lets just let them score and our offense will catch up
When it comes down to the whole season you can point your finger at the Defense – yes we turn the ball over and we have penalties but the defense has to have some pride to not letting the other team score and GA has lacked that this year – -
that is just my opinion

We need a DC Mark…period. The only difference in UGA past and present is Brian Van Gorder. The rest of the coaches have put more players in the NFL during Richt’s reign than any team in the SEC. FMR,
Last year the dawgs were over-rated. they didn’t underperform. 10 wins is 10 wins my friend. that is all. It was one season ago, and that team (for the most part) went bye bye. You want to know what 10 win seasons mean, talk to the 116 teams that didn’t get 80 wins in 8 years.
I have had a great time watching Rich’t teams. Great moments. Great games. Then there were a couple of real disappointing losses last season. And, Kentucky and Tennessee pissed me off just as bad as anyone. So, don’t assume that I am a softy who wants to coddle losers.
The point is this is one season, and you down-in-the-mouth jerks are suicidal over it. It is Richt’s first true rebuilding year, and he has a lot of young players poised for greatness. All you jaggoffs want to do is dismantle the program and doom us to five to ten years of folly while you gradually get it through your short term little brains that as you build new websites to fire the new coaches that Mark Richt was a great coach and you guys are a__holes.

When those 2 games were added to the schedule, they were only slightly better than what UGA had been scheduling all alone. Remember last year UGA was playing GA South and CMich, and us UGA fans were all upset about other team’s fans talking about our strngth of schedule. Remember Tech wasn’t getting love last year either, they were the same ‘ol Tech team that had lost 7 straight to UGA. Two things:
1) Richt did a poor job of picking his coordinators. Previously he had himself as the OC and Brian Van Gorder as the DC. Obviously Richt himself came with a sterling resume in coaching the offense and calling plays, having won all those years with FSU. Van Gorder has shown himself to be very competent not just at the college level but as a position coach and now DC in the NFL. I think the decision to hand the offense to Mike Bobo, who had never been a coordinator (not even at a lower level) was a power move for Richt. He didn’t want a strong, experienced personality in charge of the offense. But with the prestige of UGA, they could have lured a talented OC that could have taken their offense to new heights. As for the Martinez hire, it was purely nepotism, just like things were at FSU with Bobby Bowden. Friends win out over talent, even to the detriment of the program.
2) Richt has long held the philosophy that he learned from Bobby Bowden that discipline is not that important if you recruit better than everyone else. And when you are mining the talent rich state of Florida in the 1990’s without scholarship limits, that philosophy will not cost you much, other than a few headaches once in a while. But when you’re competing for recruits in Georgia against Nick Saban of Bama, Urban Meyer of Florida, Paul Johnson of GT, Lane Kiffin of UT and traditional recruiting competitors like Auburn and Clemson, you need your team to be disciplined because you aren’t going to out-talent any of those teams. You have to play clean to win, because most of those coaches (aside from maybe Kiffin) demand discipline. Richt has long shrugged off how many penalities his teams commit. Now they’re pulling kids off the field for penalities, but to me it’s too late in the season to make a difference and it tells me Richt and his staff don’t have their kids attention in practice. It shouldn’t take in game consequences to get his players’ attention. And to me that says you’ve lost a little bit of your coaching edge (if you even had it to begin with).

‘82 UGA alum. Having been spoiled with a NC and SEC titles, its a bit difficult to sit through these games. However, I think Mark Richt is a wonderful HC, he just needs to be able to make the tough decisions that are difficult for most coaches. Because he doesn’t announce them on the lynch mob’s timeline is too bad. Many would have you burning through Murray’s redshirt year just to put him in the mix. Don’t you think there is a reason, such as he’s not ready, as to why he didn’t play this year? Same with Marlon Brown. If you don’t understand the system, what value are you? Truth is we had two first round picks snatched a year early from the program and that would be difficult for most teams to recover from immediately. I do believe that Martinez is a buffoon and Fabris has no business even being on the sidelines and hopefully both will be gone at season’s end. Richt is a good HC who has fallen prey to his assistant coaches. That will all change after the season. If you judge a program merely on W’s and L’s, Donnan would still be HC. Truth is, he was about as hillbilly as they come and couldn’t interact with alumni and faculty on an intelligent level. Things will even out on the Good Ship UGA in the near term. If you are a true Bulldog, you know this is true.

The problem with our overall defense is not a down-year problem, not even a two-down-year problem. It is a trend that goes back to BVG leaving, and more specifically to West Virginia running all over us back in the 2006 bowl game. It doesn’t make me a fair-weather fan to vocalize my disappointment with a problem than began to show itself 4+ years ago, and has gone basically unchecked since.
I love CMR, and want him to stay until he retires, but only if he can and will stay on top of the program, making those hard decisions that will continuously come up. Some of the probs we have now should have been addressed more aggressively last off-season, if not earlier. Instead, sticking with the status quo has allowed them to fester, and the result is the program is worse than stagnant, but in actual decline. This is unacceptable to me as a long-time Dawg fan back to late 60’s.

So firemarkricht.net , just who do you propose hiring? The SEC is loaded with good and great coaches. Compare Mark Richt’s record against them and it is extremely favorable. Urban Meyer is 13-1 against UGA, Tenn, and FSU, so it isn’t just UGA he’s beating. Who do you propose to bring in here to beat up on the Meyers the Sabans the Kiffins, the Nutts, the Miles, the Spurriers, and the Petrinos that inhabit this league? You want to fire Richt? Give us a replacement. The only guy I can think of that could do what you THINK can be done is Bill Belichik and I don’t think he’s moving anytime soon.

Mark is right on. The UGA program has slipped greatly in the last couple or three years. It is the sum of the small things, like TWO ugly losses to Tech and now KY twice. It is the inexplicable TWO UT blowouts in the last three years or the breakdown VS Auburn on what was 4th and 32? and we ALLOWED THEM to hit one on a slant route to the corner of the endzone for the eventual win.It is the unsportmanslike conduct call vs LSU and the subsequent lousy short kick after UGA’s TD and the missed tackle by Rennie Curran ( too small ) on Charles Scott for the winning TD or the lousy, lousy play of the 09 OSU game after about 8 minutes gone in the first qtr. I could go on and one with the goofy inexplicable things that defintily show a lack of HIGH CALBER coaching like Penalties and turnovers, etc.
We all know the truth if we are REAL UGA fans and not simply onlookers.
It is time for them all to go. Why wait for yet another lousy year to take place at UGA, then in 2010 make the changes? Get TCU’s coach NOW and his Head D coach and we could go 8-3 next year, then maybe 10-1 in his second year. Why not?

The idea that LSU & Alabama have lapped us as a program because of one bad year is laughable (I’ll give you Florida). LSU lost five games last year, including a loss to UGA. Yes they beat UGA this year but it was a close controversial game in which the SEC admitted the officials made a bad call at a critical point. Obviously UGA has issues but so does LSU. Do you even think through what you write?
Alabama has had two good years and is clearly on the uptick but they don’t have any SEC championships or BCS game victories. We may want to wait on Alabama to win something of note before we put them on a Florida level pedastool.
Clearly some changes need to be made on the staff and they absolutely will. However, before you start writing the eulogy for Coach Richt and UGA football you may want to consider the following:
Coach Richt has an elite level record as a coach and has been part of a championship calibre organization for the better part of three decades. He knows what he is doing and we are in good hands with him at the helm.
The program is stacked with young talent and has a great recruiting class lined up for next year. We should have enough talent in Athens to compete for SEC titles for the next half a decade at least.
UGA has first class facilities, is among the most profitable athletic departments in the country, is committed to putting championship teams on the field, continues to put a large amount of players into the NFL, and has a head coach who has the respect of just about everyone who has ever met him.

1. Richt has never had 2 bad turnover years in a row where we were at the bottom in both giveaways AND takeaways
2. Richt has never had 2 bad seasons ina row since he’s been here in 2010
3. Meyer lost 41-0 against Michigan, Saban lost to La Tech, Stoops to K. St, Bear Bryant lost to Texas Tech 35-7. So if 1 game ACCURATELY predicts the future, all these guys SHOULD have had grim futures too, right? Richt has won 60 wins in 6 years, 70 in 7, 80 in 8. 4th winningest active coach out of 120 program.

UGA actually could have won the national championship that year, there was 1 game they lost, I don’t remember to who, they were driving for the winning touchdown. Moreno was getting 5-10 yards a carry, but jumping up and celebrating after very play. CMR took him out and UGA didnt score. So they tied for the SEC east, didn’t play for the SEC or National Championship. Maybe that is why CMR isn’t as strict on his players now.

It really is not complex –
- Swap your DC that gives up 16 points a game for one that gives up over 30 per game.
- Mix with an average OC and the worst team in penalties and turnover ratio
- Add an incompetent special teams coach
What do you get? 6 and 6. Even with an easier schedule next year, I can’t get to more than 7 wins best case.

Nobody is going to come in here and run roughshod over the coaches in this league. Do you think Ole Miss didn’t regret overreacting with David Cutcliffe? Go ahead and throw the baby out with the bath water and I’m willing to bet that 3 years from now the same crowd will be in here again wanting to fire the savior that right now they can’t even name. And just because you are a fan that “cares” and “wants” to win an NC, doesn’t make you rational in your approach to doing just that. Be careful what you ask for.

Young players, and inconsistent coaching are the root of this evil. However, I said it early and often, Richt will make the changes he needs to make, or UGA will make them. Some coaches take that very personal though. AKA Dick Sheridan when he was told he had to keep Bill Lewis on the UGA staff in 1989. Let’s see what happens now, he can’t change coordinators in the middle of the season, and he can’t change the results. I would believe that we will see at least three new coaches this year, and 2 of the 3 coordinators will be replaced.

It’s not saying much, but that is one of the smartest and most logical statements I’ve seen on here. Everyone wants to throw out CMR’s previous body of work, attributing it to Greene, VanGorder, etc. And judge him because he’s having a bad season. It’s obvious there needs to be big changes made. Mark right down the middle again. One thing that always amazes and educates me is Georgia unlike Georgia Tech has picked their talent right off the tree. No having to work with what is handed them or having to recruit second choices or forth or fifth. When Tech has had their worst years the coaches couldn’t or wouldn’t recruit the talent, seldom were they down with talent the cause. Usually they had to coach and take what came after Georgia picked over the crop. Gailey had Calvin but was stuck with Reggie who I am sure came to Tech because most others were thinking of moving him to another position. I can’t remember a quarterback for Georgia under 6ft. tall, yet I can remember several for Tech lke Dewberry or Hamilton. To watch the rich kid drop out of college when Tech has stuggled all these years to have enough dimes and nichles to get in the game amazes me, but teaches me that coaching is more than just getting Hershal Walker. Vince was more than Hershal Walker too. Maybe this little time in the cellar might cause a little new found respect for the man who caused all this talent to come to Georgia and I would think now bites his tongue watching it being wasted.

Please keep in mind that it is a small percentage of “fans” who think Richt should be cut loose right now. Richt should not and will not be fired this season and if he is, then we are screwed. Richt is and has been the right man for the job and he will do what needs to be done to correct the issues in Athens. Of course he isn’t going to talk about this in the media and he shouldn’t. Does that mean he hasn’t thought about it? No… his #1 reason for getting Bobo on the OC seat was so that he could focus on being the head coach of the program and not allowing those responsibilities to affect his play calling plans and vice versa. He is saying he isn’t good at thinking about more than one thing at at time, but he is and does. Change will come in Athens, but it won’t be full blown ousting of WM and MB like some want. Let’s allow this man to do what is needed and see how it goes.
1 season of shock shouldn’t cause this much of a tailspin. Dawg fans need to have some perspective and just calm down. Has the D been an issue? Yes…It could have been addressed, but Richt stuck it out and now that experiment hasn’t worked. It will be fixed. If and when UGA loses to Tech, Dawg fans shouldn’t blow up about it…we should lose! At the beginning of the season, most rational and educated fans (the majority mind you) knew we were looking at 8-4 or 7-5 because of the loss of 93% of the offense and the D issues (specifically the secondary). (Which by the way, do we really want WM as the secondary coach? They ARE the weak link). Tenn and Kentucky losses are the two unexpected losses that have driven the shock.
That being said, UF and ‘Bama are the two programs in the SEC, but LSU has NOT lapped us in any way shape or form. Remember, journalists are about reporting and creating some sense of upset to create interest. Same here on the good ‘ole ajc.com.
Support your Dawgs and be thankful we have had a great coach for the past 9 years. Sure this year has been sad, but what did you expect? And, don’t give me the 10-3 last year was a bad year. We didn’t win a NC or the SEC, but thats how it is. We were in an unknown territory with some “leaders” who didn’t have the team in mind. It was great to see Stafford or Knownshon on the field, but they were about themselves because of the hype, attention, and results. This team will be back…
Go Dawgs!

exNFLplayer is correct. There tends to be a brief string of magic with new coaches succeeding with the previous administration’s players. It looks like PJ could very well lose every single one of his stars on both sides of the ball at the end of the season. Lets see what he does next year.

Mark — You have become a caricature of yourself. It is almost as though someone has hi-jacked your column and is recycling these columns so as to make you look evermore ridiculous. We just read earlier this week how last November, with one humble victory, college football as we know it in the state of Georgia has been changed. That singular event served to launch Georgia and Georgia Tech on diverging trajectories. Obviously, these were absurd and grossly over-simplified leaps in logic — but you made them – so they must be true. Now, just a few days later, we read that if Georgia were to somehow win tomorrow it would be harmful to Georgia. Brilliant.
Now that you have crafted these logic loops with your keen insights, can you please share with us what profound conclusion can be derived from a UGA victory, should it occur? We know you believe it would somehow be harmful for Georgia, but what pray tell does it mean for the state of college football in Georgia and for the nascent juggernaut of program led by your new love Paul Johnson? I mean, if CPJ loses to the bumbling idiot that is Mark Richt, who can’t even beat basketball schools like Kentucky, then what does it say about the Paul Johnson as Clint Eastwood in Jacket drag narrative you have spun? I mean, as you told us earlier this week we can draw conclusions about careers, programs and rivalries based on the outcome of a single game. Four reasons why CMR should be fired after this game. (1) Inability to keep up with current tends in the game. (2) Unwilling to make hard decisions affecting coaching. (3) Stubborness in rewarding senority over ability with the players. (4) Parting his hair down the middle and spray-on tan.

Since Richt arrived, he’s been ankle deep up his rectum, but given the current hard times the past couple of seasons, now he’s crawling his way up Johnson’s colon. Just wait, as soon as Johnson’s triple 0 starts facing real competition and gets exposed on a regular basis just like how LSWho and Miami did, Bradly will come snivelngly back to Richt.

I had the same revelation after that loss. It was kind of like the severe migraine that forces you to get checked for a brain tumor instead of the nagging headache for which you take two Advil.
Richt is still by far the best coach to lead the program. But some of his subordinates aren’t doing the job. Martinez’s defense has been horrible for two years. Whoever is coaching the OL (Searels?) isn’t doing very well this year. Aside from a few lucky ducks who win a lot early, most coaches take a while. Despite the insane amount of “Tech rules!” coverage this week, the only thing other than games that Paul Johnson has won is an ACC division title. He hasn’t even won a bowl game.

I think it’s a little early to be writing off UGA as a program in decline. This year is a bad one, no doubt. Things change quickly in college football as players move on to graduation and the NFL each year. Did any other team in the nation have to replace three NFL starters at the skill positions this year? (Stafford, Morino, Massaquoi) How good would the Tech offense be if they’d just lost Nesbitt, Dwyer and Allen?
Some times it’s the smart coaching decision to take your lumps this year instead of trying to put a young player in a position where he has to carry the team. It’s a different sport, but look at the Braves as an example. They let Hanson develop in the minors until he was ready to be a top notch major league pitcher. They put Schafer in the starting lineup too early and may have destroyed his confidence. How much better might one of the UGA freshman quarterbacks be after a full year of development and learning the system? Is it possible that by not throwing one of them to the wolves this season Richt has given UGA a better chance of success for the next 3 or 4 years?

QB’s can always benefit from a redshirt year. Had D.J. Shockley had another year left you can bet that Stafford would have worn the shirt. Joe Cox is way more advanced than Joe T. was at the QB position and with the disappointing performance of the O line this year, it could have been a very ugly wasted year had Richt played Murray or Mettenberger. As it stands UGA will now have 2 highly recruited QBs for 4 more years, ala David Green and D.J. Shockley. Frankly I think playing one of them this year would have been a big mistake. Just like NOT playing Ealey would have been a mistake.

Pop Tarts National Champions ‘90 –
“How good would the Tech offense be if they’d just lost Nesbitt, Dwyer and Allen?”
It’s hard to say, because:
1) there would be a missing recruiting class not accounted for
2) a missing season of player development not accounted for
3) Jaybo Shaw did have a lot of playing time while Nesbitt was injured
4) Jordan Luallen and Daniel Drummond might have had their redshirt pulled
That’s a question that is better to be looked at after this season.

Agree with much of this, except for the part where LSU “lapped the Bulldogs.” Not sure how you arrived at that conclusion. We beat them last year, almost beat them this year. Since ‘07, LSU is 28-10 and the fan base is not happy; Georgia is 27-10 with an unhappy fan base. Both have suffered losses that they probably shouldn’t have, and both appear to be slipping further behind Alabama and Florida.
Seems to me like the programs are pretty much on the same track right now.

Good writing is hard to find and Mark has outdid himself today. “Even as Richt focuses on Tech, there’s a grim big picture.” Those adjectives were used just right, because a grim big picture is not the same thing as a big grim picture. Even though the paper is narrow and hard to read it is good to see proper use of adjectives. We was reading where Russ will be on the sidelines at the game. They won’t let him buy an NFL team but they let him root for Georgia?

I do agree that Coach Richt is in denial about his coaching staff.
If I understand correctly, a fan had to point out to him that Joe Cox was tipping off the other teams as to whether UGA was going to run a running play or a pass play based on how he was positioning his feet. Bobo later confirmed it. That right there tells me Bobo and his coaches just do not have a clue and are in over their heads.
And as for Martinez, just look at the number of points we give up per game. Erk Russell once told me over a cup of coffee that there was no reason the Georgia defense should be out there for more than 3 plays. No excuses, just a statement of fact.
It is extremely obvious that the players look unprepared coming into the games and the penalties and turnovers confirm it.
I love CMR as a person and would love to see him prosper as a successful head coach in Athens for the next 20 years. However he needs to quit being a too nice guy and fire the assistants that are not taking care of the details. If he does not have the moxie to do it then he should resign which I would hate to see happen.
It is time for the Georgia program to man up, toughen up, and show discipline and resolve in these games.
And I really feel for Joe Cox. He is a good kid and I really respect him. I know he tries his hardest and is the best qb over there in Athens at this time to run the offense. But he is borderline on the skills to be an SEC qb and has not been adequately developed by Bobo and his staff. I hope Cox has a successful career in coaching after graduation and applies what he has learned about what it takes to win to the programs he coaches in.
Hope that we somehow find a way to beat the maggots on Saturday. THWGT.

Of course Richt knows that you can’t take turnovers out of the equation. His argument is nonsense, because he has to know that protecting the ball from the other team’s efforts to take it from you and forcibly taking the ball from the other team despite their best efforts to keep it are key goals in any football game. Bottom line, well-coached teams protect the ball on offense and ball-hawk on defense.
You might as well say “if not for their superior quarterback play, we would have won the game.”

He’s only played at QB in 2 games this year because of a broken collarbone. The “system” QB is redshirting. Big guy at 6′4, over 200, and sprinter 4 years on track team.

John Heisman, Head Coach of Georgia Tech, 1904-1919, Won 100 games, lost 28, tied 6. Opening day of practice each season he would describe a football like this, holding the football up in front of the players: He would ask, “What is it?” Before anyone could answer he would say, “A prolate spheriod. That is, an elongated sphere in which the outer leathern casing is drawn tightly over a somewhat smaller rubber tubing.” Then, glaring at the players and speaking in an very serious tone of voice he would add,”Better to have died as a small boy than to fumble it.”

And during that time, 2 acc teams have won and moved into the top 25, unc and clemson, while boise’s lone tough opponent has dropped from a loss. Yet GT still sits behind this boise joke. We’ve played 4 ranked teams to boise’s one. This is why college football is a joke. It will be interesting to see if bama loses and if they do, where they drop. They should be below gt considering they’ve played a much weaker schedule, only 2 ranked teams vs 4 for for gt and gt’s loss is to a 3 loss top 20 team, miami, and their loss will be to a 4 loss unranked team.

MB, there are some coaches in sports, Bobby Bowden, Ray Knight, Al Davis (former coach, now delusional owner) who refuse, or are incapable, of recognizing the truth. When a sport has passed them by, or they are no longer effective in what they do. I’m beginning to increasingly belief Marc Richt is one of those people…If he changes his staff, starting with Willie Martinez, there is still hope for this program under him. If he doesn’t, UGA is doomed to second tier status until Damon Evans likewise wakes up and realizes that CMR can’t get it done anymore…either way, 2010 will determine his fate, one way or the other.

You are full of it and full of yourself Mark. Why don’t you just write in some good ole GT loser facts from the past. CMR will turn this program around. He did not want to waste Murray’s redshirt from the beginning. He knew the new kids are the future of the program and he has painfully played Cox in order save Murray (also due to his injury) and to look to the future. He will make the changes necessary to get back on track. In the meantime, UGA will shut you and the insects up tonight. Funny, one win in 8 years and now you think Tech will win the NC. Bulls___!

I laughed at you the last time you mentioned LSU in the SEC elite and that was before they loss to Ole Miss. They will lose again today to Ark just like they did last year during a 5 loss season. Please apply your pathetic logic to all teams in the SEC and state of GA not simply the bulldogs. It really shows you as a hater.

I’m actually afraid that if GA beats Tech tonight that CMR will take this as a big validation that he doesn’t have to make changes. In fact – during the off-season he will blame in the “young” team he had. And Willie and Booboo will be back next year.

1st…I think it is a litte premature to say UGA has gotten lapped by Florida, Bama, LSU. There are very small marginal differences in talent.
2nd…A lot of UGA fans need to wake up. You happened to finish #2 in the country because everyone else in front of you lost and you beat a crappy Hawaii team…big deal…you don’t win trophies for 2nd place!
3rd…Aaron Murray or the other guy may turn out to be great, but obviously if the coaches thought they were better now, they would be playing!! Richt started Greene and Stafford as true freshman, which tells me they don’t think they are your best option!!
4th…Even with Stafford, Massaquoi, Moreno, Allen, etc… you still lost 3 games last year…two very badly and should have lost South Carolina and either Auburn or KY. You had goal line stands just to win those games!!
5th..Richt will be gone in a couple of years….just like Fulmer…completency kills!!

Don’t take the knee jerk reaction to a less than par season. Stay behind all UGA coaches, overall they have a good record. All teams are dynamic and behave like fluid. Sometimes they’re hard to manage and circumstances are beyond anyone’s control. Hang in there and stick with them.

Hey Delbert D – What are the UGA football players majoring in?? Do you have that breakdown so we can effectively compare? And then compare that to Tech players. Even in Tech’s easiest major, the students still have to take a year of calculus.

a program 2 years removed from finishing #2 with pretty legitimate talk at the end of the year of being worthy of being in the National Championship game. Last year, 10 wins with a patchwork OLine (vince vance scares me) and no defensive game changers. This year, replacing Lord knows what percentage of the offense and once again losing your best O lineman and once again with NO defensive game changers, we’re sitting where we are. Yes a down year, a very down year by our standards, but calling for Richt’s head is insane and shows short-sightedness.
The biggest trouble is the personel we have on the defensive side of the ball. . .how many of our guys would start at Florida? Name one. . .
offensively, we’re so young, and next year, we will break in a new QB as well. . but the tools around him won’t be as green either. . .
Richt shouldn’t be going anywhere. Other coaching changes are going to be made.
btw, S. Carolina is beating Clemson.

Although I totally agree Georgia’s defense has been sub-par for far too long, their offense & O-line have been underperforming and kickoff & punt team coverage the worst I’ve seen in a long time, people calling for Mark Richt to step down are just crazy. His record is among the best for all active coachs while at UGA. Does he need to make changes, absolutely, but give him this off-season to do the right thing and if he doesn’t than yes as good as he is (and as good a person as he is) it’s probably fair to question his leadership skills to make the tough decision.

Thoughts on Ga, I haven’t missed one single game this season, however last Saturday’s meltdown and public walkaway protest, was reason enough for everyone to realize that change is going to be necessary.
Sick of losing to Fla.sick of silly penalties by poorly coached players, and that STUPID defense!

Do I believe UGA needs to make changes. Yes. But do I believe we are jumping the gun on CMR, yes! I believe CMR has earned the right to choose if he wants to keep the cordinators around for another year. I believe he will, because CMR has never fired a coach. But if UGA has another year like this one next year, then it wont be his cordinators that will be looking for a new job, but him himself. By defending Martinez, he has put the program and his job in the air. For all of us, I do hope he is making the right call.

After reading these blogs for several weeks now. I think the most pressing need with this program is a good purging of the idiot fans that think they know more about the game of football than CMR has forgotten.
For all you CWM detractors out there that think that a team should play man to man a blitz every play, I hope you watched game day this morning and listened to Micky Andrews. “I am retiring because the game has passed me bye and my pressure man to man will not work any longer.” I guess you all know more than Micky ha?
From a layman’s eye it appears some changes may be needed but I think CMR is in the best place to determine what if any changes are needed and I will support his decisions.

Nice post LJ of UGA. But you left out National Championships, of which the Dawgs have won NONE during the Richt years. In fact they haven’t won one since 1980! That’s 29 years, folks! I’ve had it. Let’s make some changes. Football has evolved over those 29 years and we’re not playing the kind of football that’s winning national titles. It’s kind of like Kentucky and basketball. They’re used to winning national titles. When it became apparent they weren’t winning them anymore, they went looking for someone who could put them back on top, opened their wallets and hired Calipari. Like him or hate him, the Cats are 6-0 so far this year. I’m tired of the excuses. The Kentucky football game was it for me. That was some of the most pitiful Georgia football I’ve ever witnessed. And I am absolutely sick and tired of losing to Florida. CMR is a nice guy and all that, but UGA’s football program is going down the toilet. It’s time for change. So, GO DAWGS! Beat Tech! And then let’s hire some new blood.

Mark, Please do us all a favor, and do your homework before you write another ranting column. While Georgia is having a down year, the rhetoric your spewing doesn’t add up. First, let’s look Georgia’s record for the last 4 years. You correctly wrote it that Georgia is 36-14 over the last 4 years. However, you failed to mention that Georgia has a 30-8 (.789) record prior to this year. To put that in perspective, his 82-22 overall record (2001-2008) is fourth best in the country in winning percentage among active coaches (.788).
Second, let’s take a look at this years team. Yes, the Georgia offense has had a lot of turnovers. And, yes, the defense has given up a lot of points. But, the defense is ranked 31st in total yards allowed per game. This ranking is far better than their rivals over at GT (46th) who have a higher AP ranking. The truth of the matter is that a defense that stays on the field alot or has to defend a short field (due to a offensive turnover on your side of the field), is going to give up more points. Thus, this is where some of the problem lies.
And, let’s take a look at the Georgia turnover problem to see if it warrants a coaching change or is individualized. Fourteen of the 26 turnovers belong to 1 player – Joe Cox. The remainder of the 12 turnovers are spread among freshmen and Richard Samuels, a sophmore. Georgia has since limited Samuels play to special teams. Unfortunately, Joe Cox is our given quarterback this year, and we won’t be able to change that until next year. (Yes, we have quarterbacks waiting in the wings, but I bet the Ga coaching staff is teaching them while saving eligibility).
In closing, do your homework and give us good information to use. Presenting your personal feelings without any sense of the facts doesn’t do ANY of us a favor. I’m betting Georgia will rebound next year and will be a strong contender.

Satilla, “National Championships” are mythical. They are usually won or lost because of the outcome of some game 1,000 miles away over which you have no control, or how someone votes. I stick to the results that actually took place on the field.

This may sound odd to some, but I’m not that upset about the win/loss thing this season. I’m more upset about HOW we lost. Even the best of programs stumble from time to time due to graduation, injuries, players leaving early, etc. But the turnovers, penalties, and general lack of poise and dicipline point straight to the coaching staff and their lack of leadership and direction. I don’t believe a HC can turn that around without some major changes.

Being a Bama fan< I have no stick in this fight-just an outside observation of a program (Bama) that has gone through it's share of bad coaches until we found the right one.
March Richt is not a bad coach! His problem is that he is too loyal to his staff. When you recruit as well as UGA as done over the past few years and find your program in decline, the ONLY direction for your finger to point is the coaching staff.
UGA's offense will be much better once Cox is gone..The main problem lies on the defensive side of the ball..I don't know of one defensive coach I would retain…
Mark, seems you have a bug up your bum about UK…get over it..the problems are much deeper than one team…

I bit dramatic here. Just two years ago we finish number 2 and were probably the best team at the end of the season. We beat LSU last year so to say they lapped us is a bit misleading. While, change is needed in some aspects to say the team is so far down is a stretch. Don’t push the panic button becuase the journalist thinks so.

Tuberville is a head coach,he wouldn’t take a DC job. West is probably not going to, either. Kirby is at Alabama, coaching under Saban, the man who gave him his first shot, took him to the NFL, and made him a DC. Kirby’s not coming, either. Maybe Mickey Andrews at FSU will come out of retirement. Joe Kines? Buehler?

We lost four big time players to the NFL, there is no way to do that and not have a dropoff. The huge question next year will be qb, where we will have to suffer through a totally inexperienced redshirt frosh, or an almost totally inexperienced redshirt junior. Poorly handled this year in terms of getting ready for next. We used to plan for those things by getting the next guy significant snaps while playing in a backup role. Next big question next year will be D line, followed by safeties. Change is coming, first off, we have to go get the jackets. HBTD

Mark,
I don’t normally respond to online articles…but after reading yours I felt a need to do so. You’ve raised some valid points…however, there is one glaring point that UGA has to address and it’s been present for the last couple of years.
The UGA football team is one of the most undisciplined teams in the SEC. Need proof? Look at the penalties. Key penalties that kill drives. “Emotional” penalties at the wrong times that let an opponent off the mat. Need further proof? Look at the off the field “incidents” with law enforcement.
It all starts with the head coach and a climate of accountability–to him, the team and each other. Until Mark Richt instills some standards and discipline into his program–this slide into mediocrity will continue.
