I love how Georgia haters think that this season is a sign that Georgia Tech is somehow the standard of excellence when it comes to football in this state while the Bulldogs simply play second fiddle. Yes, the Yellow Jackets are having a far more successful year than the Dawgs. I don’t believe anyone can justifiably argue otherwise. But let’s not get carried away here. Allow me to show the last 15 meetings between these two programs. Notice the three-year span from 1998 to 2000. Clearly, the shift in power is cyclical and ultimately temporary. More so when it comes to Tech. So, yes, this is a Georgia-basher’s dream. A year when Tech is in the top-10 and Georgia is struggling mightily. But lets not forget who the dominant program is and always will be in this state.

We strive to be a top tier program which we haven’t quite reached. We have good and bad fans just like any other school, which Tech has clearly demonstrated this year. Anyway Go Dawgs!

Well it’s getting to that time of year again when the brave little guys from the ACC go out and embarrass themselves again and put togeather another just aweful bowl record. And showing all you nerds why we don’t respect you. We don’t respect anyone in that lolipop conference of yours so why would we respect you for beating them. It’s like being the smartest special ed kid.And you will have to excuse us for losing last year. It’s just that we were winning by alot plus we’ve gotten so use to shoving you in your lockers, that we thought for sure you wouldn’t fight back this time. But I think we have grown and we won’t take out the first string and celebrating to early this year. I think the ACC should have to give up it’s automatic bowl bcs bowl bid and give it to the mountain west, and the bowl records of the last ten years support my theory.I know alot of high school teams with one loss but that doesn’t mean I think they can beat the Falcons(no matter how many losses the have).

If Tech were in the SEC, which after Sat. they will be 5-1 against over the last 2 years, they(not my Gators) would probably be playing Bama in the conf. championship. As far as the coaching goes, Tech has improved on both sides has the season progressed, UGA has not. But any coach will tell you that he can only be as good as his players. Tech has some studs, UGA has one(GREEN). Coaches also love to say “you can’t make chicken-salad out of chicken-s*%#! Stop believing the recruiting hype!

At the beginning of 08, UGA was ranked #1 and we were ranked #80. Now we are #7 and UGA is not ranked. If we are fortunate enough to beat you guys Saturday, you will have lost more games in one year than we have in two. But, PJ agrees with you. He says we have not done anything yet and it is because of that mindset that I suspect greater days are ahead.

Take a look at the BCS. More ACC teams in the top 25 than SEC teams. If not for the cupcake games (3-4 each , not including UGA) Florida and Alabama might not be undefeated. Case closed.

We just count the major or consensus polls, now which one of yours is consensus? Was it the year you refused to go to a major bowl to play Texas, or was that LSU, or was it Tenn, or was it Ohio St, or was it Mich. No you chose to go to the 2nd rate bowl and not play real competition. I think that Colorado beat ND in the Orange Bowl that year, they tried to prove something, Tech tried not to lose.

bama 2010, michigan will offer Saban 5 mill a year to lead there program and bama will slip back to what they’ve been since the bear left the sidelines. One bad year doesn’t mean twenty years of mediocrity, sorry. Since 1996 how many times did bama not go to a bowl or finish with a winning record. And how many times did they have to cheat to have a winning record. Techie on the left coast, if the SEC is so overated have the balls to play Florida, Alabama, or LSU again. There have been quite a few teams who have played “assignment” football against Tech this year. It seems to have only worked in one game though. The whole “assignment” thing doesn’t take into account Bebe cracking down and sending a LB’s helmet flying 10 yards.

U-no good analysis there, and I think that it will be the 1st quarter that Tech pushes UGA around and that it will be up to Willie to stop you, and Mike move the ball. UGa passes more than it runs, so that could be interesting, but I don’t see how UGA stays on the field without some takeaways, and I don’t see Tech making that happen. UGA has good players and good coaches, but for some reason the are not on the same page

@Sugar Hill … I never said a thing about a national championship … no chance of that happening this year. In the future, it’s certainly a possibility, since a lot of that depends upon pre-season rankings. (We’ll worry about that later.) The only thing a team can do is win the games in which they play. Beyond that, it’s up to the “voters” or “computers” … it’s a crap system.

As for schedule strength, there’s no point in arguing, because some UGA fans (including yourself) refuse to be swayed by the facts. Someone asked in an earlier blog, “Who exactly has Tech beaten this year anyway?” The correct answer is … EVERYONE they’ve played except Miami! Frankly, I would rather play a so-called “weak schedule” and WIN than play a “tough” SEC schedule and lose 5-7 games per year.

Good luck with the game this weekend … and between now and then, have a HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

I only saw one cupcake on NC’s schedule, the Citadel and it was the first game. Denver dumarse Dog UGA barely beat Arizona State. Then GA schedules Tenn Tech two weeks ago as a tuneup for the loss against KY. NC did not play Gardner Webb or Wofford get your facts straight. The UGA responses to these blogs are so predictable – you play in a weak conference; you don’t play the quality of opponents we do; we won seven in a row; we own the series… yada, yada yada

Of course, the FACT is Tech’s strength of schedule ranking is higher than UGA’s (although both are admirable). The FACT is that four of the six teams from the ACC coastal division are currently ranked compared with four teams from the entire SEC (yet, we supposedly play a weak schedule).

Tech fans will talk about winning four NC’s but UGA fans want to restrict “history” to the CMR years where they have two conference championships and we have none. Fine. Let’s further limit the “history” conversation to the tenure of the two current coaches playing against each other – that would be almost two years. Here’s what we get: Tech is 19-5 while UGA is 16-8, Tech leads 1-0 in the head-to-head match-up; Tech is 4-1 vs the SEC (about to be 5-1) while UGA is 0-1 vs. the ACC (about to be 0-2).

Actually, now I understand why UGA fans like to live in the past. If you’re a dawg fan, the reality of the present just sucks.

DawgsLick Balls does that Make GT the Yankees and UGA the braves? Which Yankee would be Reggie Ball then? Which Yankee Skipper would be Chan Gailey? That is a very bold comparison…downright arrogant for a team that just started winning after a long break.

UGA usually has a better football team than they have this year. We fans are disappointed in that fact. We are not used to this kind of disappointment. Tech fans are though…how do you cope?

I for one am glad Tech is successful. While I never want to lose to the Jackets, winning every year takes something out of a rivalry. If not for the boisterous Tech fans that talk on these blogs like they are Champions of the Universe after putting together a pretty good 2 year run…I would be excited for you.

Before you start in with your “you buy your UGA gear at Walmart” and “you never set foot in a classroom” garbage. I have…and I chose between GT and Georgia. I chose the good guys…you chose wrong.

#1 GT fan…that coach was brand new in September. Do you think the result would have been the same had we played in September? I think not. 12th game of the season is brand new…that is a stupid statement.

Our bad tackling gave you your 3 point…uhhh…shalacking as y’all make it sound, every bit as much as PJ’s great coaching. I look at a single chest bump from Rashad Jones as the only reason you won the game.

But hey if you need to engrave that on rings to feel relevent…by all means put it on them.

Finally, if we suck so bad and are not even worthy of being on the same field with the mighty jackets…Why is it a big deal to beat us? Why do you troll our blogs posting the score every day for a year telling us about the win? We certainly don’t tell Tennesee Tech how badly we beat them all year…but the way you guys post on here, you would think UGA is to Tech as Tenn Tech is to UGA.

ATLANTA – Right off the bat, before I dabble in the delight of Paul Johnson’s weekly council fire with the media, I am compelled to opine a tad on something almost entirely unrelated.

Georgia Tech is playing host to Georgia Saturday night in a football game that is important in one way or another to a whole lot of people aligned on two sides of an occasionally ugly line.

But learning as I did a few hours ago that Tech baseball players are about to launch into a fundraiser for a would-be Georgia baseball player not only made me blink, but re-consider the idea of trying to lend gravity to a mere ball game.

Then, I read again what I couldn’t believe I read the first time I read it.

Chance Veazey, a talented UGA freshman from Tifton who went through fall workouts with the baseball team, crashed on a scooter in Athens in late October.

Now, he’s at the Shepherd Spinal Center here in Atlanta, torn nearly asunder. He’s paralyzed from the waist down. After leaving a study hall of some sort, he hit a car, or it hit him.

Doesn’t matter which.

Here’s the double-take maker: Yellow Jacket baseball players are working up a fundraiser for a young man who hasn’t even played against Tech.

Sorry to jump the gun on a story Sting Extra OSR’s Jon Cooper will write for next week, and sorry again that the Tech sports information department folks preferred that SE-OSR wait to write about this until later for fear of compromising this weekend’s start to the Michael Isenhour Toy Drive.

The moment moves me, though, and the greatest joy in my role with Sting Extra OSR is something approximating an absence of rigid oversight.

I have no great, deep, super meaningful words here. It seems a bit of a shame to go this route when Johnson was more intriguing than usual – and that’s saying something – today with a big and perky media crowd in attendance.

But holy cow!

In taking into account all the recent conversations I’ve had with my 12-year-old son about the dangers of motorcycles, we’ve had none regarding scooters.

So in an odd way, this underlines yet again for perhaps the 10,000th time in my life, the fragile nature of existence, and the value of – and need for — perspective.

We all assign different emotional values to things material and ethereal.

I’m having a hard time calibrating the emotional verdict that should be rendered on the concept of the Jackets raising money for a Dog.

But I think it’s big.

In a way, it renders easier to believe Johnson’s comments today that the Georgia game, while very big to some, will not define this squad of Jackets. It’s not likely to define much, in fact.

Johnson referred to a larger body of work meaning much more. He was onto something.

The pending act of the Tech baseball team defines the potential of humanity in simultaneously small and huge ways. This is a small thing writ large.

‘m also unabashedly proud to have been moved by all of this, proud that my older and more calloused heart still has soft spots. And I’m glad that people are capable of greatness on many levels.

Lastly, I’m thankful ahead of a special holiday for a forum to open that ever older heart.

AndyC – you’re completely right. I wish GA had done better – it would only help our case and make it a more meaningful game. I was hoping GA would pull off a Florida upset (not that anyone in their right mind would expect that).

There’s some pleasure in GA’s bad season because it’s fun to watch your rivals turn on themselves and call for their coaches heads, etc., but only to a point. I’d rather see two good teams clash – I for one watch the game for good football, not interstellar domination.

That said, I’m more concerned and excited about the ACC game vs. Clemson, because they are playing like a legit team right now and C.J. Spiller can bust it wide open.

Hee boy was that Gardner Webb or Wofford that you wanted to compare to Arizona State or Ok State. Dumb boy next year we go to Colorado and play in the Big 12 again. Tech picks up UNC Asheville I hear. Get you facts right before you run your mouth. Are you saying then, that Wake Forest should have played LSU a few years ago, and UVA should have played Florida, in 07, and Va Tech should have played Florida last year. Maybe NC State should have been playing Tenn, or maybe Duke should have played Alabama. Get real panty waister.

Colorado, HA HA HA. They sucked this and will probably fire their coach. UGA also added Louisiana and Idaho State. Real OOC powerhouses.

you know, no way on paper or on TV UGA should be able to even keep Tech under 100 whilst trying to score at least one field goal… especially when you read all the articles, all the posts by tech fans and the media coverage of our debacle that is 2009 v/s tech’s assent that is 2009.

Having said all that, Bradley’s right, at this point Tech just needs to shut up and deal and omg what is going to happens if the Dawgs hunker down and pull one over on ‘em. Mark always said as he toured the state fans would say (depending on the location) beat auburn and tech, or florida… and tech, or carolina and tech. So he felt as long as he beat tech things would be ok.

For all you fellow GT fans, please keep one thing in mind: We haven’t stopped anybody all year! FSU & Vandy games, at least the first half, were track meets, Duke took the opening kickoff and drove down the field and scored in 5 plays and we held Miss. State to 487 total yards! Cox has a good arm and if we don’t put any pressure on him, he’ll complete passes all day long. If GT can control the ball, crank out some long drives, keep the pups off the field and play some defense we will win. As much as I’d like to see a blowout, looking at it pragmatically I think it’s going to be relatively close w/GT winning. Which, of course, is all I ask for!!

5-1 NC? can’t count a couple for Tech while the real men were off fighting wars bud. If you count that way you’d have to count all 6 national titles UGA was awarded over the years. UGA is “man” enough to only take credit for the 2 undisputed titles we’ve been awarded.

GTMBA, you make some valid points about UGA not being recognized as a national “elite” program but I would argue that that is largely based on media perception, and frankly a reason the Tech doesn’t get more credit when its due (as it is now) because Georgia is not one of those “hot” states the media looks lovingly upon. Case in point, at the beginning of this season a piece ran on ESPN talking up the larger than life coaches in the NCAA, Pete Carrol, Bob Stoops, Urban Myer, Jim Tressel and Nick Saban with Carrol being decided to have had the best run of those guys during their 8 years in office. They pointed out barely in passing though that Mark Richt had the same record as Pete Carrol, better than Stoops or Tressel among coaches who had held the same jobs over that span, and had done so in the SEC. Each member on the show panel conceded that neither Carrol or Stoops would have the record nor the championships had they played with their teams, the schedule that Mark had faced. Wouldn’t one surmise from that discussion then that Mark and UGA deserved (at that point) a little more credit than they were getting? One could argue they were in position to play for 3 BCS NC games had one break or another gone their way in 8 seasons( and even a Tech fan can admit it a tad easier in the PAC 10 to make it undefeated than in the SEC)… he can’t help it he isn’t lucky! lol

No doubt the wheels have fallen off, and this is largely based (by us who really watch the program and care about it) on our decline in defensive production since BVG left. Mark will correct that this year, he’ll have too. He’s been very stoic (which is a quality we used to brag about), very loyal to his coaches (another quality we used to brag about) and players but at this point it has to be obvious. Get the D back to where it was under BVG, and UGA will be right back where it was, in the mix for the SEC every year and with one domino falling the right way they’ll be playing for the BCS.

Then after the two routs, disappointed Georgia claiming the games “didn’t count,” in the Tech-Georgia series, because they were “not normal Tech-Georgia games.” Georgia refused to count the two in the series, although the NCAA, the SEC, Tech, and UGA’s own season record did count them.

We wasn’t heavily recruited by Georgia but we was always impressed with Coach Richt until we went to the Dairy Queen with him and he didn’t know how to order. He was lined up in the Brazier line and talking about a sundae and it was embarrassing to me and Jeff. Coaches at Clemson know the Dairy Queen inside and out. Ask Coach if he remembers Sonny Clusters and Jeff taking him to Dairy Queen.

1. Georgia is NOT a nationally prominent college football team! They last won a NC in 1980…..that would be 29 years for you Dawg fans. And what have they done since? They won a couple SEC titles? Impressive!

2. The SEC is not the best conference in the country when UGA is tied for second in their division.

3. UGA will not beat Tech this weekend……no way, no how. Even if UGA is at their best, I do not see them shutting down the running game of Ga. Tech. They had a tough time with 2 Kentucky RB’s, how are they going to stop all the options that Tech will throw at them.

We are down this year. This program is not falling off a cliff.
Tech has won nothing yet their biggest accomplishment in the last 8 years is a three point win at georgia in 08.

And yet Mark, you add like Tech is the new national champion.
JOhnson is a great coach. Richt is a great coach…he just needs to get rid of a few non performers on his staff.

The reason UGA refuses to recognize GT’s wins in 1943 and 1944 is because GT had players on campus who were in the armed forces.

Little-known rumor: Tech has redone the the field for the Georgia game so that the slope is 1 foot higher at the south end than the north end. Tech has designed different sets of plays for alternating quarters.

As best as I can determine, none of the Tech players are talking smack, claiming to beat Puppy butt this weekend, or anything else like that. All that kind of talk, on either side of the fence is on the blogs. I would not think that there is much talk on the practice field in Athens either… Except for wondering how “faithful” dawg fans could diss the team by walking out on them before the game was decided or over.

That walkout is going to come back and bite the whole dawg nation on the butt, and it may very well happen Saturday night. If the UGA players are not into the game with every fiber of their being, but remembering the walkout last weekend; it could affect their play in a seriously negative manner. If that happens it will be more embarrassing what happens to the Pups than what happened last Saturday night. And, it won’t be the team’s fault.

It is ok to complain and be critical on the blogs, but at the game, support your team. At least don’t disrespect them by walking out when they still have a chance to win. That really sucked!

The basic problem at UGA is that many Bulldog fans have totally unrealistic expectations. Anyone who has observed college football for more than a couple of decades comes to understand that even very good football programs wax (10-11 wins seasons) and wane (8-9 wins seasons), and that even these very good programs will have off years. Some among the UGA fan base get overly excited when the program waxes and fully expect to win several national championships in a decade. When such lofty expectations are not met, these semi-knowledgeable fans are sorely disappointed and complain loudly, creating dissention in the program, and, ultimately, bringing about the demonization, demoralization, and demise of the existing coaching staff. The “rebuilding” process begins anew with a new coach.

This phenomenon is not limited to UGA, but it most definitely resides in Athens and around the Bulldog Nation.

Gator A, the name alone implies you are not objective and picking Florida must have been hard on you with so many others to choose from. “I want a team to pull for, and imagine that, my team is number one in the country.” Too bad all life is not that easy. You probably have Gator A on your vanity licence plate, assuming you still have your drivers licence or are old enough. As you have pointed out how few Tech shirts you have seen I picture you to be dress from head to toe in polyester blue and orange like a JC Penny’s poster child.

To the Georgia fans on this site who still love their team I salute you. You have earned the right to come on a later date and bust my chops. But to some gator found in the cold waters of North Georgia because his Gainesville whatever has not got a blog, or really even a newspaper get on back where you belong. I am sure when Tech does wins the National Championship you can turn all that polyester in for white and gold at most Walmarts, but just remember you weren’t invited.

As an SEC man I sure hope the Dawgs win this weekend for the conference. As a program though I don’t have a lot of respect for UGA or your fans. Every year we hear from the buttlickers that they’re going to demolish us in JAX; and in most years it’s the same outcome Gators feast on dogmeat. But the fans stay obnoxious no matter what. I hope you guys win, but most people know what many of you won’t admit – GTech is the better football team this year and the programs are moving in opposite directions.

Here’s an idea… send CMR to FSU where he started. The rivalry with the Criminoles used to be a good one, like the WLCP in Jax used to be. Now the Noles are as irrelevant as the Dawgs. Sad, really. But, we’ll take the W against both of you each year!

Coach Willie Martinez

…will do the right thing and fall on his sword this Sunday and prevent embarassment to his head coach by resigning. His resignation has already been submitted! So, there is hope yet Dawg Nation! Resigning after the Yech game but before the bowl game will give CMR some time to get the best DC available. Thins are looking up Dawgs!

I want to thank all the fans for putting up with my BullSh!t. I have the ability to take national top 5 talent and end up in the honeynutt cheerios bowl.

Id like to take to you about my next years recruiting class. We will be on the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine and will have a preseason ranking of number one.

We will probably be out of the national title hunt by week 4 but dont worry. They are starting a new bowl game in georgia called the Bubba Bowl. We will have a good tie in to the bowl which favors SEC teams east of atlanta and west of south carolina. Bring all the beer you want. After I screw up this year Ill fire a subordinate and say he did not follow my orders.

You would be wrong about that assumption. Different teams altogether and no way to make a good comparison. Putting Calvin Johnson into our offense wouldn’t create necessarily more opportunities than BeyBey Thomas. The biggest factor in the equation would be Josh Nesbitt versus Reggie Ball. In that sense the difference is huge. While neither Nesbitt or Ball are/were great passers and you still have to get the ball in the vicinity of either CJ or BT, Nesbitt is the superior QB for sure.

I don’t see all those Mr. College Football shows that you’re on but I do know that the PAC-10 fans out here in the Bay Area think you’re ridiculously biased as an SEC homer on ESPN. Remember, that’s their opinion, not necessarily mine! Of course, the PAC-10 and WAC fans think there is a horrible East Coast bias anyway and you’re a poster child as proof of that notion. What’s nice out here is that even though there are great fans of many schools (even schools on the East Coast) I NEVER see any UGA flags, stickers or such. I see Georgia Tech stickers, flags and decals every week in Silicon Valley though, and it warms my heart to see them.

I don’t think either team will need much motivation though. Wish I could be there on Saturday. Go Jackets!

The Tech defense against the run was a significant this year, against guys like Williams of VaTech, and Miami, with their running QB, and CJ Spiller. Overall, Tech is allowing 4.1 yards per carry.

The DT who backs up Ben Anderson is T.J. Barnes, a RS-FR who plays a lot on running downs. He’s 6′7, listed at 341 lbs. He has 12 tackles, 1 for loss compared with Anderson’s 14 and 5.
