In times of plenty and in times of want, there’s always Georgia versus Georgia Tech. It’s a game that defines (and sometimes reconfigures) the sport in our state, and by way of public service we offer yet another installment — that’s my way of saying I’ve lost count — of our Field Guide to the opposing sets of fans.
• Tech fans describe the moves Roddy Jones put on Georgia defenders along the sideline as “the old okey-doke.” Georgia fans describe Tech’s stadium as “The joke by Coke.”
• Georgia fans still can’t get over Tech putting the score of last year’s Georgia game on their Coastal Division co-championship rings. Tech fans still can’t get over Georgia players selling SEC championship rings on eBay.
• Tech fans laugh really hard whenever Paul Johnson says anything mildly amusing. Georgia fans stopped laughing at Paul Johnson midway through the third quarter on Nov. 29, 2008.
• Georgia fans don’t take the ACC seriously. Tech fans think SEC superiority is all a figment of Tim Brando’s imagination.
• Two words guaranteed to make Tech fans mad: Chop block. Two words guaranteed to make Georgia fans mad: Excessive celebration.
• Georgia fans believe SEC refs have it in for the Bulldogs. Tech fans believe SEC refs do a fine job — especially that nice Al Ford.
• Tech fans think it’s funny the head of SEC officiating is a Tech grad. Georgia fans think it’s all part of a grand conspiracy.
• Georgia fans are incensed by PETA’s demand that the late Uga VII be replaced by a robot. Tech fans will be incensed if they don’t get the contract to build the robot.
• Tech fans are excited to see the Jackets so high in the BCS rankings. Georgia fans are excited to see the Bulldogs so high in the recruiting rankings.
• Georgia fans can’t believe Tech keeps extending Paul Johnson’s contract. Tech fans would be willing to chip in and help Georgia extend Willie Martinez’s contract.
• Tech fans are eagerly awaiting a rematch with Clemson in Tampa. Georgia fans are eagerly awaiting a rematch with Kentucky in Stegeman Coliseum. (Er, maybe not. Kentucky’s better in hoops, too.)
• Georgia fans cackled when Tech kept going to bowls on the blue turf of exotic Boise. Tech fans with long memories are hoping like crazy Georgia lands in Shreveport, where every night is surf-and-turf at Red Lobster.
• The Tech fan’s favorite moment of 2009: Josh Nesbitt stealing the ball from a Florida State linebacker. The Georgia fan’s least favorite moment of 2009: Joe Cox flipping the ball to a Kentucky lineman.
• Georgia fans can’t understand what has happened to Mark Richt. Tech fans think what has happened to Mark Richt has a lot to do with Paul Johnson.
• Tech fans get really miffed if their team doesn’t wear gold. Georgia fans get really miffed if their team wears black helmets.
• Georgia fans still make fun of Tech’s (lack of) attendance. Tech fans figure that’s the last resort of a fading program: If you can’t beat ‘em on the field, outnumber ‘em in the stands.
• This season has Tech fans recalling the Bobby Dodd Era. This season has Georgia fans recalling the Ray Goff Era.

Moment of the week goes to …
GT9!!!
“Could Bradley catch a football? Not if a big Kentucky defensive lineman was in the way, no.”
UGA and Mr. Joe Cox, the gift that keeps on giving!
Oh, and like Reggie Ball, he is a collegiate player, it is not appropriate to boo him. Don’t be crazy Notre Dame fan slugging people!

This would be a rebuilding phase for UGA except for one thing, its fans. When fans get so full of themselves that they think they are “entitled” to win 10 every year they are on the road to decline. You can’t build on turmoil and UGA is heading for a very hard fall.

Sue – Good post talking about GT’s playbook.
Against FSU they basically only ran about 5 different plays in the 2nd half but they were all working. Why the heck change what is working?
I watched the UGA-KY game and I wondered what the heck happened to the bootleg and the TE in the 2nd half

Wow, Tech wins once in 8 tries (and for the 12th time since 1965) and suddenly they are the standard of excellence for football in Georgia? Seven straight to start the decade mean nothing; but, one three point win means they are the gold standard (pardon the pun) for football? Wow.

Richt should not be fired. Richt should replace Martinez with a compentant defensive coordinator and appoint Bobo janitor of the locker room. We’ve got got fine players – just inferior coordinators.

Why should PETA be so angry about UGA’s mascot? That dog is treated better than royalty. (Looks better than Prince Charles, too.)

Things I love about the Tech-Georgia series:
Tech winning the first game in 1893, 28-6. Georgia fans so mad they poked Tech players with canes during the game, and threw rocks at them afterwards.
These scores: 1905 – Tech 46, Georgia 0. 1943 – Tech 48, Georgia 0.
1944 – Tech 44, Georgia 0. 1951 – Tech 48, Georgia 6.
Georgia and Tech dressing in their traditional uniforms, selling tickets as usual, to the public. Then after the two routs, disappointed Georgia claiming the games “didn’t count,” in the Tech-Georgia series, because they were “not normal Tech-Georgia games.” Georgia refused to count the two in the series, although the NCAA, the SEC, Tech, and UGA’s own season record did count them.

Paul…I think on the game winning drive against FSU they only called one play and it worked 6 straight times. Incredible. I hope Nesbitt doesn’t get in that kind of groove on Saturday.
I also hope that the dawgs sub on defense like crazy early on. We will be doing a lot of chasing on Saturday opening the door for a huge collapse in the second half (again). I would rather play at 75% effort the whole game than 100% for one half and then crap in the second half.

We wasn’t heavily recruited by Georgia but we was always impressed with Coach Richt until we went to the Dairy Queen with him and he didn’t know how to order. He was lined up in the Brazier line and talking about a sundae and it was embarrassing to me and Jeff. Coaches at Clemson know the Dairy Queen inside and out. Ask Coach if he remembers Sonny Clusters and Jeff taking him to Dairy Queen.

1. Georgia is NOT a nationally prominent college football team! They last won a NC in 1980…..that would be 29 years for you Dawg fans. And what have they done since? They won a couple SEC titles? Impressive!
2. The SEC is not the best conference in the country when UGA is tied for second in their division.
3. UGA will not beat Tech this weekend……no way, no how. Even if UGA is at their best, I do not see them shutting down the running game of Ga. Tech. They had a tough time with 2 Kentucky RB’s, how are they going to stop all the options that Tech will throw at them.
Happy Thanksgiving all, and enjoy the game.

We are down this year. This program is not falling off a cliff.
Tech has won nothing yet their biggest accomplishment in the last 8 years is a three point win at georgia in 08.
And yet Mark, you add like Tech is the new national champion.
JOhnson is a great coach. Richt is a great coach…he just needs to get rid of a few non performers on his staff.

Any word or link of note regarding the fundraiser? Post it if you can… I think this something even the most ardent of supporters can work towards…
Wouldn’t be wonderful if we could have something like the old Scottish Rite game to benefit the Shepard Spinal Center and possibly helping the poor to afford proper spinal care?

Smart guy – you realize that UGA claims that they won the MNC in the 1942 season don’t you?
The reason UGA refuses to recognize GT’s wins in 1943 and 1944 is because GT had players on campus who were in the armed forces.
And before you start making aspersions about GT players in WW II you need to google “Clint Castleberry”.

What’s all this talking about the past? The wins in the past don’t count this year, and you can’t get any do-overs on the losses.
This is the present, here and now. This weekend is the future, and therefore subject to speculation.

Not saying we will… nor that we should… But if UGA beats Tech, does that say anything about all the experts and Pundits at the AJC that have proclaimed the end of UGA and the dawn of the Golden Age for the Jackets? I’m just saying, because I dont recall articles like this when UGA beat Tech for 7 years in a row. Don’t walk too Proud nor talk too wise Jackets, there is always a writer at the AJC ready to throw a rock at you and say your program sucks.

Jackette you make a lot of sense. Richt will be fine but this lynch mob over in Athens may find that some of the problem is themselves. 70 tons of trash, fouling the parking lots, stumbling into a stadium in a stupor still zipping up from urinating on the sidewalk in front of minors, old ladies and dogs better trained and mannered. You are lucky a man like Richt wants to be seen with the likes of you. You are like the fat slob that tells his beautiful wife I think I will keep you, like he is doing her the favor.
