Tech fans giggle while UGA fans say, ‘Shut up and deal’

In times of plenty and in times of want, there’s always Georgia versus Georgia Tech. It’s a game that defines (and sometimes reconfigures) the sport in our state, and by way of public service we offer yet another installment — that’s my way of saying I’ve lost count — of our Field Guide to the opposing sets of fans.

• Tech fans describe the moves Roddy Jones put on Georgia defenders along the sideline as “the old okey-doke.” Georgia fans describe Tech’s stadium as “The joke by Coke.”

• Georgia fans still can’t get over Tech putting the score of last year’s Georgia game on their Coastal Division co-championship rings. Tech fans still can’t get over Georgia players selling SEC championship rings on eBay.

• Tech fans laugh really hard whenever Paul Johnson says anything mildly amusing. Georgia fans stopped laughing at Paul Johnson midway through the third quarter on Nov. 29, 2008.

• Georgia fans don’t take the ACC seriously. Tech fans think SEC superiority is all a figment of Tim Brando’s imagination.

• Two words guaranteed to make Tech fans mad: Chop block. Two words guaranteed to make Georgia fans mad: Excessive celebration.

• Georgia fans believe SEC refs have it in for the Bulldogs. Tech fans believe SEC refs do a fine job — especially that nice Al Ford.

• Tech fans think it’s funny the head of SEC officiating is a Tech grad. Georgia fans think it’s all part of a grand conspiracy.

• Georgia fans are incensed by PETA’s demand that the late Uga VII be replaced by a robot. Tech fans will be incensed if they don’t get the contract to build the robot.

• Tech fans are excited to see the Jackets so high in the BCS rankings. Georgia fans are excited to see the Bulldogs so high in the recruiting rankings.

• Georgia fans can’t believe Tech keeps extending Paul Johnson’s contract. Tech fans would be willing to chip in and help Georgia extend Willie Martinez’s contract.

• Tech fans are eagerly awaiting a rematch with Clemson in Tampa. Georgia fans are eagerly awaiting a rematch with Kentucky in Stegeman Coliseum. (Er, maybe not. Kentucky’s better in hoops, too.)

• Georgia fans cackled when Tech kept going to bowls on the blue turf of exotic Boise. Tech fans with long memories are hoping like crazy Georgia lands in Shreveport, where every night is surf-and-turf at Red Lobster.

• The Tech fan’s favorite moment of 2009: Josh Nesbitt stealing the ball from a Florida State linebacker. The Georgia fan’s least favorite moment of 2009: Joe Cox flipping the ball to a Kentucky lineman.

• Georgia fans can’t understand what has happened to Mark Richt. Tech fans think what has happened to Mark Richt has a lot to do with Paul Johnson.

• Tech fans get really miffed if their team doesn’t wear gold. Georgia fans get really miffed if their team wears black helmets.

• Georgia fans still make fun of Tech’s (lack of) attendance. Tech fans figure that’s the last resort of a fading program: If you can’t beat ‘em on the field, outnumber ‘em in the stands.

• This season has Tech fans recalling the Bobby Dodd Era. This season has Georgia fans recalling the Ray Goff Era.

UGA fans,

Enjoy your series lead. Enjoy your seven game streak against TECH. Enjoy Herschel. Enjoy your one NC. Enjoy reveling in the past.

A word of advice: you might want to look ahead instead of behind, because GT is about to run over your ***.

Tech fans’ fight song tell’s Georgia to go to hell. Georgia’s fight song is played to the tune of “I’ll be workin on the Railroad, all the live long day”.

You’re thinking of Purdue. UGA’s fight song is a variation of a 1860’s battly hymn. Good try, though.

Oh, and Georgia’s fight song also tells Tech to go to hell.

game means too much to tech..georgia is simply rebuilding …10-1 tech ranked 7th in the bcs only a 7 point favorite over lowly Georgia……….dawgs in a slight upset is my pick..tech’s one game where they fell behind 2 td’s they never recovered against an unranked Miami team

The spread is based on UGA’s reputation and nothing else.

I really find it interesting that Tech fans wan UGA to lose and have a poor record. I know you want to win the heads up game but other than that you should want UGA to play well and go into the heads up game as a ranked team. If that had happened this year maybe you guys would have a shot at playing in the championship game instead of having no shot despite possibly winning the ACC championship. I thought you guys were suppose to be smart. I guess not.

What a piece of trash from a supposedly writer. If you did this on the street you could be arrested for inciting a riot, which is all you’re trying to do. Why don’t you write about the players, the coaches, injuries, that brought both teams to this point. No wonder the Lexington Herald doesn’t miss you, nor do the sports fans either.

#1 GT fan…that coach was brand new in September. Do you think the result would have been the same had we played in September? I think not. 12th game of the season is brand new…that is a stupid statement.

Our bad tackling gave you your 3 point…uhhh…shalacking as y’all make it sound, every bit as much as PJ’s great coaching. I look at a single chest bump from Rashad Jones as the only reason you won the game.

But hey if you need to engrave that on rings to feel relevent…by all means put it on them.

Finally, if we suck so bad and are not even worthy of being on the same field with the mighty jackets…Why is it a big deal to beat us? Why do you troll our blogs posting the score every day for a year telling us about the win? We certainly don’t tell Tennesee Tech how badly we beat them all year…but the way you guys post on here, you would think UGA is to Tech as Tenn Tech is to UGA.

I think y’all should make up your minds. Is it a big deal to beat us because we are good…or are we so bad that it is meaningless to beat us?

I would like an answer…

I wanted uga fans to read this:

Official Sports Report: November 25, 2009
It’s Not The End-all, Do-all
Johnson said it; other examples prove it
by Matt Winkeljohn, OSR Managing Editor

ATLANTA – Right off the bat, before I dabble in the delight of Paul Johnson’s weekly council fire with the media, I am compelled to opine a tad on something almost entirely unrelated.

Georgia Tech is playing host to Georgia Saturday night in a football game that is important in one way or another to a whole lot of people aligned on two sides of an occasionally ugly line.

But learning as I did a few hours ago that Tech baseball players are about to launch into a fundraiser for a would-be Georgia baseball player not only made me blink, but re-consider the idea of trying to lend gravity to a mere ball game.

Then, I read again what I couldn’t believe I read the first time I read it.

Chance Veazey, a talented UGA freshman from Tifton who went through fall workouts with the baseball team, crashed on a scooter in Athens in late October.

Now, he’s at the Shepherd Spinal Center here in Atlanta, torn nearly asunder. He’s paralyzed from the waist down. After leaving a study hall of some sort, he hit a car, or it hit him.

Doesn’t matter which.

Here’s the double-take maker: Yellow Jacket baseball players are working up a fundraiser for a young man who hasn’t even played against Tech.

Sorry to jump the gun on a story Sting Extra OSR’s Jon Cooper will write for next week, and sorry again that the Tech sports information department folks preferred that SE-OSR wait to write about this until later for fear of compromising this weekend’s start to the Michael Isenhour Toy Drive.

The moment moves me, though, and the greatest joy in my role with Sting Extra OSR is something approximating an absence of rigid oversight.

I have no great, deep, super meaningful words here. It seems a bit of a shame to go this route when Johnson was more intriguing than usual – and that’s saying something – today with a big and perky media crowd in attendance.

But holy cow!

In taking into account all the recent conversations I’ve had with my 12-year-old son about the dangers of motorcycles, we’ve had none regarding scooters.

So in an odd way, this underlines yet again for perhaps the 10,000th time in my life, the fragile nature of existence, and the value of – and need for — perspective.

We all assign different emotional values to things material and ethereal.

I’m having a hard time calibrating the emotional verdict that should be rendered on the concept of the Jackets raising money for a Dog.

But I think it’s big.

In a way, it renders easier to believe Johnson’s comments today that the Georgia game, while very big to some, will not define this squad of Jackets. It’s not likely to define much, in fact.

Johnson referred to a larger body of work meaning much more. He was onto something.

The pending act of the Tech baseball team defines the potential of humanity in simultaneously small and huge ways. This is a small thing writ large.

If I need to apologize for getting your hopes up, for teasing you into reading on with the idea that there would be great Johnson nuggets, I will. I’m a little low on that kind of juice right now, though, as I close another edition of Sting Extra OSR with children behind me who need to be put to bed.

I’m also unabashedly proud to have been moved by all of this, proud that my older and more calloused heart still has soft spots. And I’m glad that people are capable of greatness on many levels.

Lastly, I’m thankful ahead of a special holiday for a forum to open that ever older heart.

Bless Chance Veazey and all on the wrong side of fate. Bless, too, the baseball Jackets, and all who endeavor to help those in need.

It really makes no difference who “dominated” who at this point. All the past records and stats mean absolutely nothing come Saturday at 8:00pm, when toe meets leather and this year’s game begins. I am the son of a Tech grad (1941) and have attended or watched both Tech and Georgia since way back in the late 1950’s. The only game that counts is this one. The Pups better bring their A game on Saturday or they will be hauling their black and blue A’s back to Athens with nothing to crow about but long gone history.

Either team can win it on Saturday, the Pups are good enough to beat Tech. Tech could lose it with too many turnovers and mistakes. Current history, this year’s performances of both teams frankly warrants that the Pups better have their act together and come in ready to play good fundamental football… for sixty minutes. Tech will need to be ready to defend against the pass and keep the Pup running game held in check. Mistakes, penalties, and coaching will make the difference in the game. Tech is rested and confident in their coaches and game plan, the Pups are wanting to right the ship after an embarrassing loss last week. What is going on in the minds and hearts of the players that wear the red, white, silver, and black? Can they put together a solid performance like they did against Auburn, or will they self-destruct like they have on several occasions this year?

The fans aren’t helping the Pup’s cause by trashing the coaches and players with all the negative talk, and then worse than that… walking out on the game last week when it was not yet decided and still within reach. That can really mess with the minds of these young players and rob them of the incentive to play hard and play to win.

If the Pups lose this game, it will be more because of the intangibles rather than a lack of talent or ability. If Tech loses, it will be because they get away from what has brought them success this far into the season.

I still say it will be close through the first half, and then Tech pulls away in the second half. Final score: Tech 49, Georgia 24.

AndyC – you’re completely right. I wish GA had done better – it would only help our case and make it a more meaningful game. I was hoping GA would pull off a Florida upset (not that anyone in their right mind would expect that).

There’s some pleasure in GA’s bad season because it’s fun to watch your rivals turn on themselves and call for their coaches heads, etc., but only to a point. I’d rather see two good teams clash – I for one watch the game for good football, not interstellar domination.

That said, I’m more concerned and excited about the ACC game vs. Clemson, because they are playing like a legit team right now and C.J. Spiller can bust it wide open.

Sue – I’ve got an answer for you.

Last year it was a big deal to beat you, this year it’s not really going to be..

Last year UGA was preseason #1 and Tech was not expected to do anything at all, plus we had a new coach and a completely new system with players that were not recruited for that system. And it was in your house. So yes it was absolutely a big deal.

This year UGA is basically irrelevant, so not that big a deal.

Does that answer your question?

Exactly…so Georgia has nothing to lose and GT has nothing to gain by winning (comparatively speaking you have more to lose in a loss and we have more to gain in a win). We have exchanged our (recent) historical roles this year!

Beware…we were in a similar situation last year and lost the game. It can happen.

That #1 ranking was the worst thing that could have happened to us.

Also…I heard that the UGA coaches are letting the team tackle in practice; so I would not expect the tackling to be as bad as it was last year.

Now 5 turnovers and 100 yards in penalties…you can probably count on both of those.
