Tech fans giggle while UGA fans say, ‘Shut up and deal’

PJ cracks wise; Richt is unamused. (AJC photo by Pouya Dianat)

In times of plenty and in times of want, there’s always Georgia versus Georgia Tech. It’s a game that defines (and sometimes reconfigures) the sport in our state, and by way of public service we offer yet another installment — that’s my way of saying I’ve lost count — of our Field Guide to the opposing sets of fans.

• Tech fans describe the moves Roddy Jones put on Georgia defenders along the sideline as “the old okey-doke.” Georgia fans describe Tech’s stadium as “The joke by Coke.”

• Georgia fans still can’t get over Tech putting the score of last year’s Georgia game on their Coastal Division co-championship rings. Tech fans still can’t get over Georgia players selling SEC championship rings on eBay.

• Tech fans laugh really hard whenever Paul Johnson says anything mildly amusing. Georgia fans stopped laughing at Paul Johnson midway through the third quarter on Nov. 29, 2008.

• Georgia fans don’t take the ACC seriously. Tech fans think SEC superiority is all a figment of Tim Brando’s imagination.

• Two words guaranteed to make Tech fans mad: Chop block. Two words guaranteed to make Georgia fans mad: Excessive celebration.

• Georgia fans believe SEC refs have it in for the Bulldogs. Tech fans believe SEC refs do a fine job — especially that nice Al Ford.

• Tech fans think it’s funny the head of SEC officiating is a Tech grad. Georgia fans think it’s all part of a grand conspiracy.

• Georgia fans are incensed by PETA’s demand that the late Uga VII be replaced by a robot. Tech fans will be incensed if they don’t get the contract to build the robot.

• Tech fans are excited to see the Jackets so high in the BCS rankings. Georgia fans are excited to see the Bulldogs so high in the recruiting rankings.

• Georgia fans can’t believe Tech keeps extending Paul Johnson’s contract. Tech fans would be willing to chip in and help Georgia extend Willie Martinez’s contract.

• Tech fans are eagerly awaiting a rematch with Clemson in Tampa. Georgia fans are eagerly awaiting a rematch with Kentucky in Stegeman Coliseum. (Er, maybe not. Kentucky’s better in hoops, too.)

• Georgia fans cackled when Tech kept going to bowls on the blue turf of exotic Boise. Tech fans with long memories are hoping like crazy Georgia lands in Shreveport, where every night is surf-and-turf at Red Lobster.

• The Tech fan’s favorite moment of 2009: Josh Nesbitt stealing the ball from a Florida State linebacker. The Georgia fan’s least favorite moment of 2009: Joe Cox flipping the ball to a Kentucky lineman.

• Georgia fans can’t understand what has happened to Mark Richt. Tech fans think what has happened to Mark Richt has a lot to do with Paul Johnson.

• Tech fans get really miffed if their team doesn’t wear gold. Georgia fans get really miffed if their team wears black helmets.

• Georgia fans still make fun of Tech’s (lack of) attendance. Tech fans figure that’s the last resort of a fading program: If you can’t beat ‘em on the field, outnumber ‘em in the stands.

• This season has Tech fans recalling the Bobby Dodd Era. This season has Georgia fans recalling the Ray Goff Era.

At least Mark Richt wears his wind pants in a lot cooler fashion than Paul Johnson. CPJ looks like a grandpa on a morning walk.

Denver Dog,

The one thing that could put Georgia in the mix early and put Tech on their heels a little bit is if Cox can connect with some key passes for scores early. He certainly is capable, although not having Green available will hurt some.

Butler is frickin amazing! If the Pups can put some points on the board early and the defense can force the Jackets into a couple of three and outs early on, it should be a real war, especially if they can keep the Jackets backed up deep in their end of the field.

The only factor that can come into play is that the Pups have not proven they can handle adversity very well. The Auburn game was a great game, but then to tank against Kentucky is really confusing. The schizophrenia exhibited by the Pups this year is what makes this game a crap shoot. Which UGA team will show up?

The Pups have the talent and potential to beat Tech, no doubt. Tech can make it a way too close game and even lose it by being over confident and cocky or developing fumbleitis and making stupid mistakes. CPJ should have the Jackets ready and with the right mix of energy and focus. Once again, the unknown will be the preparation factor for the Pups and will the coaches have them ready mentally and will the players stay disciplined and focused for the entire game. The second half tendancy to go into a funk that the Pups have demonstrated this year can’t afford to happen in this game if they have any hope of winning it.

It should be a good contest either way.

I only saw one cupcake on NC’s schedule, the Citadel and it was the first game. Denver dumarse Dog UGA barely beat Arizona State. Then GA schedules Tenn Tech two weeks ago as a tuneup for the loss against KY. NC did not play Gardner Webb or Wofford get your facts straight. NC beat VA Tech and Miami, who you you beat besides yourselves????? GO TECH – GO ACC

MB: it has to be fun for you guys at the AJC to finally be able to put some gt news on page 1 and shove it down UGA’s throats. As an ‘82 UGA grad, I can remember 2-3 years when they announced the tech scores in Athens – and gt was actually winning that there was some mild applause. Those days will not happen again. This ride will be short. Enjoy it while you can – as most are.

This is the original gtlvr (yes, the homo-erotic one was a fake). Thanks for showing how bass-ackwards you inbreaders at UGA are. Again, glad I didn’t lower myself to go to that crap school, glad that I have more to live for than cheering for a football team, and glad that I can count myself lucky not to include homophobic, inbred losers as my fellow sportsfans.

The reason that UGA fans get all bent out of shape about Tech winning is that football is the only thing they have going for them. They lose, and people realize that the only thing they have going for them is a worthless diploma (if they even got through 2nd grade).

Food for thought:

… 28 – 28 halftime …

… can GT stop Joe Cox’s passing …

… GT pulls away in 2nd half … big time …

… if only GT had a defense … hmm … might just show up Saturday night ???

… low turn-out for GT senior night … only 10 seniors on team … 3 starters … looking good for GT, bad for pups next year too …

(Denver Pup, where did you go … by the way, your earlier Waffle House (founded by multi-gazillionaire GT grad) idea … not a bad idea … P.S. 28 degrees in Denver right now – hope you’re enjoying the warm weather!!!!)

I just talked to Willie Martinez boss and he told me he has a surprise for the Yellow Jerks.

The UGA responses to these blogs are so predictable – you play in a weak conference; you don’t play the quality of opponents we do; we won seven in a row; we own the series… yada, yada yada

Of course, the FACT is Tech’s strength of schedule ranking is higher than UGA’s (although both are admirable). The FACT is that four of the six teams from the ACC coastal division are currently ranked compared with four teams from the entire SEC (yet, we supposedly play a weak schedule).

Tech fans will talk about winning four NC’s but UGA fans want to restrict “history” to the CMR years where they have two conference championships and we have none. Fine. Let’s further limit the “history” conversation to the tenure of the two current coaches playing against each other – that would be almost two years. Here’s what we get: Tech is 19-5 while UGA is 16-8, Tech leads 1-0 in the head-to-head match-up; Tech is 4-1 vs the SEC (about to be 5-1) while UGA is 0-1 vs. the ACC (about to be 0-2).

Actually, now I understand why UGA fans like to live in the past. If you’re a dawg fan, the reality of the present just sucks.

DawgsLick Balls does that Make GT the Yankees and UGA the braves? Which Yankee would be Reggie Ball then? Which Yankee Skipper would be Chan Gailey? That is a very bold comparison…downright arrogant for a team that just started winning after a long break.

UGA usually has a better football team than they have this year. We fans are disappointed in that fact. We are not used to this kind of disappointment. Tech fans are though…how do you cope?

I for one am glad Tech is successful. While I never want to lose to the Jackets, winning every year takes something out of a rivalry. If not for the boisterous Tech fans that talk on these blogs like they are Champions of the Universe after putting together a pretty good 2 year run…I would be excited for you.

Before you start in with your “you buy your UGA gear at Walmart” and “you never set foot in a classroom” garbage. I have…and I chose between GT and Georgia. I chose the good guys…you chose wrong.
