In times of plenty and in times of want, there’s always Georgia versus Georgia Tech. It’s a game that defines (and sometimes reconfigures) the sport in our state, and by way of public service we offer yet another installment — that’s my way of saying I’ve lost count — of our Field Guide to the opposing sets of fans.

• Tech fans describe the moves Roddy Jones put on Georgia defenders along the sideline as “the old okey-doke.” Georgia fans describe Tech’s stadium as “The joke by Coke.”

• Georgia fans still can’t get over Tech putting the score of last year’s Georgia game on their Coastal Division co-championship rings. Tech fans still can’t get over Georgia players selling SEC championship rings on eBay.

• Tech fans laugh really hard whenever Paul Johnson says anything mildly amusing. Georgia fans stopped laughing at Paul Johnson midway through the third quarter on Nov. 29, 2008.

• Georgia fans don’t take the ACC seriously. Tech fans think SEC superiority is all a figment of Tim Brando’s imagination.

• Two words guaranteed to make Tech fans mad: Chop block. Two words guaranteed to make Georgia fans mad: Excessive celebration.

• Georgia fans believe SEC refs have it in for the Bulldogs. Tech fans believe SEC refs do a fine job — especially that nice Al Ford.

• Tech fans think it’s funny the head of SEC officiating is a Tech grad. Georgia fans think it’s all part of a grand conspiracy.

• Georgia fans are incensed by PETA’s demand that the late Uga VII be replaced by a robot. Tech fans will be incensed if they don’t get the contract to build the robot.

• Tech fans are excited to see the Jackets so high in the BCS rankings. Georgia fans are excited to see the Bulldogs so high in the recruiting rankings.

• Georgia fans can’t believe Tech keeps extending Paul Johnson’s contract. Tech fans would be willing to chip in and help Georgia extend Willie Martinez’s contract.

• Tech fans are eagerly awaiting a rematch with Clemson in Tampa. Georgia fans are eagerly awaiting a rematch with Kentucky in Stegeman Coliseum. (Er, maybe not. Kentucky’s better in hoops, too.)

• Georgia fans cackled when Tech kept going to bowls on the blue turf of exotic Boise. Tech fans with long memories are hoping like crazy Georgia lands in Shreveport, where every night is surf-and-turf at Red Lobster.

• The Tech fan’s favorite moment of 2009: Josh Nesbitt stealing the ball from a Florida State linebacker. The Georgia fan’s least favorite moment of 2009: Joe Cox flipping the ball to a Kentucky lineman.

• Georgia fans can’t understand what has happened to Mark Richt. Tech fans think what has happened to Mark Richt has a lot to do with Paul Johnson.

• Tech fans get really miffed if their team doesn’t wear gold. Georgia fans get really miffed if their team wears black helmets.

• Georgia fans still make fun of Tech’s (lack of) attendance. Tech fans figure that’s the last resort of a fading program: If you can’t beat ‘em on the field, outnumber ‘em in the stands.

• This season has Tech fans recalling the Bobby Dodd Era. This season has Georgia fans recalling the Ray Goff Era.

Doug, any recommendations on places to eat down there, Tech seems to have those second rate bowls covered. I have a friend going to Boise, any ideas on that I could tell him about? How about that big bowl in San Fran, I’ve been there but not for a bowl. Any ideas there? You could help everyone out if you would share your experiences at these spots

Denver Dog everyone is sick about hearing about how good the SEC is. It’s the most lopsided conference in the country. Look at the numbers and they’ll show you the ACC teams have a much tougher schedule than the SEC. For once this year GA played a non-conference game against a decent team like OK State, next year they’re wanting to play Florida’s schedule against Charleston Southern, Troy and FIU. Yeah those are some real storied programs. GA suks this year! Get over it and no NC doesn’t want to be a part of the SEC we have other sports in our conference besides football idiot!

It’s amazing to see the Tech fans come out and think they are the superior program over the past decade. They think they are so intelligent because they go to tech, and it’s amazing to see how stupid they really are. You have won one game in the past eight years and you thing you are undefeated…….. NOT !

But let’s not forget who the dominant program is and always will be in this state.

You know what’s odd? CPJ actually agrees with many of the most die-hard Dog fans … we haven’t done anything yet! Yes, the Jackets have ended several “unpleasant” streaks over the last couple of years, but in the grand scheme of things we haven’t accomplished a whole lot. One of the goals at the beginning of the season is to put yourself in a position so that each game becomes more important than the last. The Jackets have done that. However, as mentioned in yesterday’s press conference, this week’s game against the Dogs will not define our season … win or lose.

That’s something that must be incredibly frustrating to the Dog fans. If we win … it won’t really help us (especially given the relatively low strength of this year’s dog team). If we lose … it won’t hurt us that much either. We still have a chance to play for the conference championship, which will put us in a BCS bowl and give us an opportunity to finish the season in the top 5 in the country.

It’s not that the game this Saturday evening isn’t important … it’s just not THAT important anymore. We’ve got greater achievements in mind.

You TechGeeks (redundant, I know) must think if you say it enough about y’all rising and UGA sinking, it will make it so. Use what little sense you have and realize that will NEVER happen. The ONLY time y’all beat us is when you all are decent and we SUCK. That’s how it will always be. You just can’t get the players. Whatcha gonna do when Nesbitt and Dwyer leave???

Hee boy was that Gardner Webb or Wofford that you wanted to compare to Arizona State or Ok State. Dumb boy next year we go to Colorado and play in the Big 12 again. Tech picks up UNC Asheville I hear. Get you facts right before you run your mouth. Are you saying then, that Wake Forest should have played LSU a few years ago, and UVA should have played Florida, in 07, and Va Tech should have played Florida last year. Maybe NC State should have been playing Tenn, or maybe Duke should have played Alabama. Get real panty waister.

That ball in the air looks like it is getting ready to hit one of those coaches right in the head. Which one? And who threw it? Both coaches look a little like Paula Deen did right before she took a hit from a 12-pound flying ham. Mark, say you was in the press box and suddenly you was hit by a flying ham . . . and you looked up and there was ol’ Jeff looking up at you and grinning from across the room. What would you think should be done considering it is Thanksgiving and we should all try and get along?

U-no good analysis there, and I think that it will be the 1st quarter that Tech pushes UGA around and that it will be up to Willie to stop you, and Mike move the ball. UGa passes more than it runs, so that could be interesting, but I don’t see how UGA stays on the field without some takeaways, and I don’t see Tech making that happen. UGA has good players and good coaches, but for some reason the are not on the same page

Wait, UGA’s problems this year “have a lot to do with Paul Johnson”? I mean, really Mark? Our problems are lack of discipline, poor defense, overrated players, etc. It has nothing to do with Mark Richt being infatuated, obsessed, intimidated by Paul Johnson. Not everyone shares your undying devotion to CPJ, Mark.

@Sugar Hill … I never said a thing about a national championship … no chance of that happening this year. In the future, it’s certainly a possibility, since a lot of that depends upon pre-season rankings. (We’ll worry about that later.) The only thing a team can do is win the games in which they play. Beyond that, it’s up to the “voters” or “computers” … it’s a crap system.

As for schedule strength, there’s no point in arguing, because some UGA fans (including yourself) refuse to be swayed by the facts. Someone asked in an earlier blog, “Who exactly has Tech beaten this year anyway?” The correct answer is … EVERYONE they’ve played except Miami! Frankly, I would rather play a so-called “weak schedule” and WIN than play a “tough” SEC schedule and lose 5-7 games per year.

Good luck with the game this weekend … and between now and then, have a HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
