Tech fans giggle while UGA fans say, ‘Shut up and deal’

In times of plenty and in times of want, there’s always Georgia versus Georgia Tech. It’s a game that defines (and sometimes reconfigures) the sport in our state, and by way of public service we offer yet another installment — that’s my way of saying I’ve lost count — of our Field Guide to the opposing sets of fans.

• Tech fans describe the moves Roddy Jones put on Georgia defenders along the sideline as “the old okey-doke.” Georgia fans describe Tech’s stadium as “The joke by Coke.”

• Georgia fans still can’t get over Tech putting the score of last year’s Georgia game on their Coastal Division co-championship rings. Tech fans still can’t get over Georgia players selling SEC championship rings on eBay.

• Tech fans laugh really hard whenever Paul Johnson says anything mildly amusing. Georgia fans stopped laughing at Paul Johnson midway through the third quarter on Nov. 29, 2008.

• Georgia fans don’t take the ACC seriously. Tech fans think SEC superiority is all a figment of Tim Brando’s imagination.

• Two words guaranteed to make Tech fans mad: Chop block. Two words guaranteed to make Georgia fans mad: Excessive celebration.

• Georgia fans believe SEC refs have it in for the Bulldogs. Tech fans believe SEC refs do a fine job — especially that nice Al Ford.

• Tech fans think it’s funny the head of SEC officiating is a Tech grad. Georgia fans think it’s all part of a grand conspiracy.

• Georgia fans are incensed by PETA’s demand that the late Uga VII be replaced by a robot. Tech fans will be incensed if they don’t get the contract to build the robot.

• Tech fans are excited to see the Jackets so high in the BCS rankings. Georgia fans are excited to see the Bulldogs so high in the recruiting rankings.

• Georgia fans can’t believe Tech keeps extending Paul Johnson’s contract. Tech fans would be willing to chip in and help Georgia extend Willie Martinez’s contract.

• Tech fans are eagerly awaiting a rematch with Clemson in Tampa. Georgia fans are eagerly awaiting a rematch with Kentucky in Stegeman Coliseum. (Er, maybe not. Kentucky’s better in hoops, too.)

• Georgia fans cackled when Tech kept going to bowls on the blue turf of exotic Boise. Tech fans with long memories are hoping like crazy Georgia lands in Shreveport, where every night is surf-and-turf at Red Lobster.

• The Tech fan’s favorite moment of 2009: Josh Nesbitt stealing the ball from a Florida State linebacker. The Georgia fan’s least favorite moment of 2009: Joe Cox flipping the ball to a Kentucky lineman.

• Georgia fans can’t understand what has happened to Mark Richt. Tech fans think what has happened to Mark Richt has a lot to do with Paul Johnson.

• Tech fans get really miffed if their team doesn’t wear gold. Georgia fans get really miffed if their team wears black helmets.

• Georgia fans still make fun of Tech’s (lack of) attendance. Tech fans figure that’s the last resort of a fading program: If you can’t beat ‘em on the field, outnumber ‘em in the stands.

• This season has Tech fans recalling the Bobby Dodd Era. This season has Georgia fans recalling the Ray Goff Era.

game means too much to tech..georgia is simply rebuilding …10-1 tech ranked 7th in the bcs only a 7 point favorite over lowly Georgia……….dawgs in a slight upset is my pick..tech’s one game where they fell behind 2 td’s they never recovered against an unranked Miami team

When Mark Richt wants to relax, he goes to a tanning bed. When CPJ

The only thing that is more sparse than Mark Richt hair is Georgia’s
secondary.
You know, Coach Paul Johnson just got a contract extension this week.
I heard Mark Richt is hoping for hair extensions in the off season.

Greg, not very high? Cream comes to the top, #1 and #2, I think are SEC. I don’t believe that there will be any ACC teams in the type of bowl that can play these guys, but you never know. Tech has played the last in the East and the last in the west and struggled with both. Now they will get to play the 4th in the east. We will see how that works out for you?

What is scaring the h3ll out of the bulldogs is everyone around them is getting better faster, even including their hated rival GT. UF, UAlabama, UT and even UK are improving while UGA is going in the other direction. That is the reason for all the emotion. Their underlying fear of what’s coming next.

Man I hate hearing the big mouths from these so called GT fans who write in these blogs. I’m sure most of them have never played any kind of heavy sports and really don’t know what the heck they are talking about. For instance this is a new year but you have so many of these clowns still talking about last year. Dang Nerds this is a new year and you have a pretty decent team to be proud of and you live in the past. The Dawgs are down this year but will be back with (I seriously hope) Coach Richt. You don’t get rid of a good coach after one bad year. College teams are all year to year and when you have that real good one you enjoy it because down times will come. GO DAWGS

db I think when you count those polls that are from little sisters of the poor, and all the other hokey ones you are counting UGA has 7 to your 4. We just count the major or consensus polls, now which one of yours is consensus? Was it the year you refused to go to a major bowl to play Texas, or was that LSU, or was it Tenn, or was it Ohio St, or was it Mich. No you chose to go to the 2nd rate bowl and not play real competition. I think that Colorado beat ND in the Orange Bowl that year, they tried to prove something, Tech tried not to lose.

bama 2010, michigan will offer Saban 5 mill a year to lead there program and bama will slip back to what they’ve been since the bear left the sidelines. One bad year doesn’t mean twenty years of mediocrity, sorry. Since 1996 how many times did bama not go to a bowl or finish with a winning record. And how many times did they have to cheat to have a winning record. Techie on the left coast, if the SEC is so overated have the balls to play Florida, Alabama, or LSU again. Texas would beat tech pretty good by the way. Go Dawgs!

Green Eggs and Ham Breath, if we need to change something we will. Fear seems to be the word that describes Tech who got out of the SEC because they couldn’t win anymore! I hope you win your conference, so we can at least say you have one a conference championship in the last 60 years. What is this about NCAA investigating your athletes taking courses at Dekalb Tech? That will got right up there with the academic fraud of 5 years ago. Joe Hamilton has got a deal for you!!!

On the radio interview this morning, CMR said that the defense would have to stay on assignment, stay disciplined, and tackle. They won’t just be able to knock the Tech players down. Fundamentals of football. Something that the Pups have struggled with all season.

Three days to prepare, coming off a particularly stinging loss, and dissed by the fans, all come together this week to make this game a real challenge for the Pups.

Meanwhile, Tech is rested, on a roll offensively, greatly improved on defense, and as demonstrated the past two or three games, has a passing attack to keep the defenses honest and not just camp out in the box. The pitch part of the option has been lethal against the teams who don’t defend the corners well, and the Pups have not handled the edges very well this year.

The areas where Tech is a little weak is in pass defense, and kick coverage. The areas where the Pups are strongest is the run and punting. The matchup this weekend favors the Jackets.

Tech will be focused, rested and ready to play and ready to break the string of losses at Bobby Dodd Stadium at the hands of the Pups. The Pups will come in with who knows what kind of mindset. If they are hyped and don’t stay disciplined it will not fare well for them. If they come in with a hangover from the Kentucky game, it could get ungly… and in a hurry. The UGA coaches will be the key to having the Pups ready… and that does not bode well either.

I predict, a fairly close game through the first half. Something like 10 to 7 or 14 to 10, with Tech holding the edge. The second half will be the real test for the Pup defense, and the third quarter may be the one that puts the Pups on their heels. Tech will pull away and some statement points may be made toward the end. Final score: Tech 49 Pups 24.

Keys to the game, Nesbitt, Dwyer, and Bay-Bay will have one of their best games, CPJ will out-coach CMR. The Pup defense will fold in the second half, and Cox will throw a couple of interceptions and get flustered… early on. Tech will win the time of possession battle by a good 10 to 15 minutes even though Butler puts them deep in their own territory with some good punts. Falling behind early will bring out the worst in the Pups lack of discipline and they will start commiting stupid penalties that will kill key drives ending their ability to stay with the Jackets and keep it close.

I could be wrong, but this is the picture that sets up based upon watching both teams all year. Tech is just the better team, better coached and on a mission this year. UGA is not.

Good article B. Madley. That said, Tech wins by 20. 30 if they don’t pull Nesbitt and Dwyer at the end of the 3rd quarter. I hope it isn’t a bad sign that I am confident this year. It’s the first time in a while.

There have been quite a few teams who have played “assignment” football against Tech this year. It seems to have only worked in one game though. The whole “assignment” thing doesn’t take into account Bebe cracking down and sending a LB’s helmet flying 10 yards.

What’s the over/under this week on Buck Belue saying with a defensive tone – “Johnny, inside sources told me that the players had a vote and yes, Georgia will be getting on the bus and making the trip down to Grant field. They will put their uniforms on and will show up to play the game…they will not be forfeiting.”…since he doesn’t have any other valid analysis.

Denver Dog

November 25th, 2009

U-no good analysis there, and I think that it will be the 1st quarter that Tech pushes UGA around and that it will be up to Willie to stop you, and Mike move the ball. UGa passes more than it runs, so that could be interesting, but I don’t see how UGA stays on the field without some takeaways, and I don’t see Tech making that happen. UGA has good players and good coaches, but for some reason the are not on the same page.
