Tech fans giggle while UGA fans say, ‘Shut up and deal’

PJ cracks wise; Richt is unamused. (AJC photo by Pouya Dianat)

In times of plenty and in times of want, there’s always Georgia versus Georgia Tech. It’s a game that defines (and sometimes reconfigures) the sport in our state, and by way of public service we offer yet another installment — that’s my way of saying I’ve lost count — of our Field Guide to the opposing sets of fans.

• Tech fans describe the moves Roddy Jones put on Georgia defenders along the sideline as “the old okey-doke.” Georgia fans describe Tech’s stadium as “The joke by Coke.”

• Georgia fans still can’t get over Tech putting the score of last year’s Georgia game on their Coastal Division co-championship rings. Tech fans still can’t get over Georgia players selling SEC championship rings on eBay.

• Tech fans laugh really hard whenever Paul Johnson says anything mildly amusing. Georgia fans stopped laughing at Paul Johnson midway through the third quarter on Nov. 29, 2008.

• Georgia fans don’t take the ACC seriously. Tech fans think SEC superiority is all a figment of Tim Brando’s imagination.

• Two words guaranteed to make Tech fans mad: Chop block. Two words guaranteed to make Georgia fans mad: Excessive celebration.

• Georgia fans believe SEC refs have it in for the Bulldogs. Tech fans believe SEC refs do a fine job — especially that nice Al Ford.

• Tech fans think it’s funny the head of SEC officiating is a Tech grad. Georgia fans think it’s all part of a grand conspiracy.

• Georgia fans are incensed by PETA’s demand that the late Uga VII be replaced by a robot. Tech fans will be incensed if they don’t get the contract to build the robot.

• Tech fans are excited to see the Jackets so high in the BCS rankings. Georgia fans are excited to see the Bulldogs so high in the recruiting rankings.

• Georgia fans can’t believe Tech keeps extending Paul Johnson’s contract. Tech fans would be willing to chip in and help Georgia extend Willie Martinez’s contract.

• Tech fans are eagerly awaiting a rematch with Clemson in Tampa. Georgia fans are eagerly awaiting a rematch with Kentucky in Stegeman Coliseum. (Er, maybe not. Kentucky’s better in hoops, too.)

• Georgia fans cackled when Tech kept going to bowls on the blue turf of exotic Boise. Tech fans with long memories are hoping like crazy Georgia lands in Shreveport, where every night is surf-and-turf at Red Lobster.

• The Tech fan’s favorite moment of 2009: Josh Nesbitt stealing the ball from a Florida State linebacker. The Georgia fan’s least favorite moment of 2009: Joe Cox flipping the ball to a Kentucky lineman.

• Georgia fans can’t understand what has happened to Mark Richt. Tech fans think what has happened to Mark Richt has a lot to do with Paul Johnson.

• Tech fans get really miffed if their team doesn’t wear gold. Georgia fans get really miffed if their team wears black helmets.

• Georgia fans still make fun of Tech’s (lack of) attendance. Tech fans figure that’s the last resort of a fading program: If you can’t beat ‘em on the field, outnumber ‘em in the stands.

• This season has Tech fans recalling the Bobby Dodd Era. This season has Georgia fans recalling the Ray Goff Era.

For seven straight years UGA owned Tech…one game and all of a sudden Tech is a dynasty and UGA is fading?? How did you get this job? UGA is 59-39-5 all-time vs GT including a 14-4 run since 1991. You’re a joke. Do some research…oh, wait you’re a columnist. Makes since now.

The article was funny, especially the “chop block” and “excessive celebration” line, but, really, the funniest part is how angry all the Georgia fan comments are.

This year Georgia fans are miserable. Tech fans are happy, and that makes the Georgia fans even more miserable.

Keep whining about the past and insulting the school, Dawgs. Every bitter little comment you leave makes us laugh harder.

Well it’s getting to that time of year again when the brave little guys from the ACC go out and embarrass themselves again and put togeather another just aweful bowl record. And showing all you nerds why we don’t respect you. We don’t respect anyone in that lolipop conference of yours so why would we respect you for beating them. It’s like being the smartest special ed kid.And you will have to excuse us for losing last year. It’s just that we were winning by alot plus we’ve gotten so use to shoving you in your lockers, that we thought for sure you wouldn’t fight back this time. But I think we have grown and we won’t take out the first string and celebrating to early this year. I think the ACC should have to give up it’s automatic bowl bcs bowl bid and give it to the mountain west, and the bowl records of the last ten years support my theory.I know alot of high school teams with one loss but that doesn’t mean I think they can beat the Falcons(no matter how many losses the have).

“Did you Georgia fans know that since 1992 Georgia has a 91-55 record in the SEC. A whopping 62% of the time Georgia will win a conference game.”

Yeah, given that you’re obviously a retarded Gaytor fan, it’s no surprise that your “history” only goes back to ‘92.

If Tech were in the SEC, which after Sat. they will be 5-1 against over the last 2 years, they(not my Gators) would probably be playing Bama in the conf. championship. As far as the coaching goes, Tech has improved on both sides has the season progressed, UGA has not. But any coach will tell you that he can only be as good as his players. Tech has some studs, UGA has one(GREEN). Coaches also love to say “you can’t make chicken-salad out of chicken-s*%#! Stop believing the recruiting hype!

I think we should hire Dick Butkas as head coach at UGA. At least then we could watch his FedEx commercials for a change instead of watching Carpets of Dalton commercials.

I love the way you dawg fans play right into MB plan. He writes this stuff to bring out the idiot fringe of the dawg nation. The only thing really correct in his article is the stupid fans who want CMR fired and the fact that when UGA has a bad year the only thing they can do is go with the name calling and down grading a player character. You Tech fans on this blog are just as bad. I guess degrading 18 – 19 year old kids is some kind of sport for you idiots. These kids, on both teams, will play hard on Saturday and there will be a winner and a loser. The sun will rise the next morning and these kids will move on to the next challenge. Yes, I expect Tech to win since I am a Tech fan. If they lose it does not mean that Josh, JD, and the rest are no class individuals or bad football players. Get a grip people.

How can Mark Richt be the savior of UGA football for years & now have the UGA fans trying to run him out of town? UGA has one of the ten best football coaches in the country and you guys want to fire him?
Who you gonna get that is a better coach?

CMR will have the Dawgs back on top in no time. He has and continues to get quality players. UGA is lucky to have CMR ! The team will play much better in 2010 and will be drastically improved in 2011. Good luck to the seniors Saturday on both teams.

DPCOOPER,

At the beginning of 08, UGA was ranked #1 and we were ranked #80. Now we are #7 and UGA is not ranked. If we are fortunate enough to beat you guys Saturday, you will have lost more games in one year than we have in two. But, PJ agrees with you. He says we have not done anything yet and it is because of that mindset that I suspect greater days are ahead.

Most Georgia fans don’t want to run off Richt. It’s journalists and the loud mouths that keep saying that. Most of us love having him on the sideline and realize that everything will be fine. We also realize we have a great chance to upset Tech and ruin their season. That we are really looking forward to.

It all runs in cycles, guys. Young coaches coach with fire in their belly, as years go by most mellow, and eventually retire or die. It’s a game, and for those who have played on a college team, seeing all the hype on some blogs is amusing, knowing what goes on within the team that never gets out to the public is like night and day. Majority of what is in newspaper columns is written as if the writer is on another planet.

I just read the article by Ray Glier, on ajc.com, and it was a true piece of jounalism. It was about firing a coach after a bad season. Quotes from other coaches, examples of what could happen. Nothing pitting one program against the rest. Nothing biased about one program or the another. It had insight and facts. No opinions. It was refreshing to read. MB, you an your blog croonies should take a lesson from this type reporting. If you truly want to call yourself sports journalist then you need follow this type writing. Wishful thinkig I know.

Take a look at the BCS. More ACC teams in the top 25 than SEC teams. If not for the cupcake games (3-4 each , not including UGA) Florida and Alabama might not be undefeated. Case closed.

winterdawg, take the time to read CPJ news conference. If you think losing to UGA will ruin our season you have another thing coming. Only the idoit fringe of both programs define this game as the “Season”. Yes, we like to win but I bet if I gave you the choice between beating Fla. or GT you would jump on the Fla win so fast it would make your head spin. The game has major importance only in the minds of those who do not understand football. Tech loses to UGA but beats Clemson in the ACCCG then they go to a BCS bowl. Losing to UGA would not change that. Only thing it would change is the ranking and we all know just how important that is. That said I believe we will win but if we don’t the only thing bad about it would be listening to the idiot fringe of the bulldawg nation. I will still make the trip to Tampa.

I live in a rural section of NE GA. One of our newest neighbors through the woods is a GT grad. Nice enough guy, but odd. Odd in the sense that this past year he had another neighbor turn a spot for his garden and his theory for pest control was to build ‘chicken runs’ between the rows. His answer for weed control was to plant clover between the rows. It was explained to him that A) Deer love clover, it spreads a bit and red clover is planted in the fall to provide nitrogen to your garden spot for the next season, if you wish B) Chicken runs between rows..? Are you serious..? People, I couldn’t make this up. It’s a real story…

One bright spot for the Bulldog Nation. The academic progress reports are out and 86% of the entire football team made straight “A” s last semiester. They’re still having trouble writing the “B”s but they’re penmanship class scores have really improved since the spring.

@MR I agree with your posts 100%. I honestly believe the Bradley has been reduced to writing blogs that are designed to get hits, nothing more.
There is no reason to even consider firing CMR. He does have some work to do as the Bulldogs are playing undiscliplined ball with all the penalties, and turnovers. He relied a bit much on the motivational giimmicks, but we will be alright. I am totally confident he will right the ship.
