Tech fans giggle while UGA fans say, ‘Shut up and deal’

PJ cracks wise; Richt is unamused. (AJC photo by Pouya Dianat)

In times of plenty and in times of want, there’s always Georgia versus Georgia Tech. It’s a game that defines (and sometimes reconfigures) the sport in our state, and by way of public service we offer yet another installment — that’s my way of saying I’ve lost count — of our Field Guide to the opposing sets of fans.

• Tech fans describe the moves Roddy Jones put on Georgia defenders along the sideline as “the old okey-doke.” Georgia fans describe Tech’s stadium as “The joke by Coke.”

• Georgia fans still can’t get over Tech putting the score of last year’s Georgia game on their Coastal Division co-championship rings. Tech fans still can’t get over Georgia players selling SEC championship rings on eBay.

• Tech fans laugh really hard whenever Paul Johnson says anything mildly amusing. Georgia fans stopped laughing at Paul Johnson midway through the third quarter on Nov. 29, 2008.

• Georgia fans don’t take the ACC seriously. Tech fans think SEC superiority is all a figment of Tim Brando’s imagination.

• Two words guaranteed to make Tech fans mad: Chop block. Two words guaranteed to make Georgia fans mad: Excessive celebration.

• Georgia fans believe SEC refs have it in for the Bulldogs. Tech fans believe SEC refs do a fine job — especially that nice Al Ford.

• Tech fans think it’s funny the head of SEC officiating is a Tech grad. Georgia fans think it’s all part of a grand conspiracy.

• Georgia fans are incensed by PETA’s demand that the late Uga VII be replaced by a robot. Tech fans will be incensed if they don’t get the contract to build the robot.

• Tech fans are excited to see the Jackets so high in the BCS rankings. Georgia fans are excited to see the Bulldogs so high in the recruiting rankings.

• Georgia fans can’t believe Tech keeps extending Paul Johnson’s contract. Tech fans would be willing to chip in and help Georgia extend Willie Martinez’s contract.

• Tech fans are eagerly awaiting a rematch with Clemson in Tampa. Georgia fans are eagerly awaiting a rematch with Kentucky in Stegeman Coliseum. (Er, maybe not. Kentucky’s better in hoops, too.)

• Georgia fans cackled when Tech kept going to bowls on the blue turf of exotic Boise. Tech fans with long memories are hoping like crazy Georgia lands in Shreveport, where every night is surf-and-turf at Red Lobster.

• The Tech fan’s favorite moment of 2009: Josh Nesbitt stealing the ball from a Florida State linebacker. The Georgia fan’s least favorite moment of 2009: Joe Cox flipping the ball to a Kentucky lineman.

• Georgia fans can’t understand what has happened to Mark Richt. Tech fans think what has happened to Mark Richt has a lot to do with Paul Johnson.

• Tech fans get really miffed if their team doesn’t wear gold. Georgia fans get really miffed if their team wears black helmets.

• Georgia fans still make fun of Tech’s (lack of) attendance. Tech fans figure that’s the last resort of a fading program: If you can’t beat ‘em on the field, outnumber ‘em in the stands.

• This season has Tech fans recalling the Bobby Dodd Era. This season has Georgia fans recalling the Ray Goff Era.

Gator Bob Orlando,

I’ve got to agree with you on the UGAg fan base. I pull for the SEC period so I’m hoping for a Dawg win this weekend (it improves our SOS too). But, the whining and barking mutts are insufferable. If they get beat they deserve it. They’re just PO’d that the record is 17-3 over the past 20 years. A lot of recent crap is about Tebow but he hasn’t played for us for 20 years!

BuckheadNole,

Nice post and usually like your posts in general. Yes, it will be good to have a more competitive series. Lord knows you owned us since the mid 80’s until recently, so we know what it’s like to be on the bottom of a rivalry.

Sue,

Don’t know why you have such anger issues. As you Dawg fans always say… “Wait until next year”. Well, we will be there! The question is will your team?

I am also amazed about all the gloating going on from the GT side. If you had any class at all, a win against a team playing at its peak is always sweeter than anything else. I guess I laugh at the GT thinking that you are actually giggling about a possible win over UGA because they are not playing their best??

As a UGA fan, I don’t hate the GT contingent, just pity you. Would it be fair to ask you that if UGA should pull off a win this saturday, May I be allowed to giggle??

We don’t need to worry about the sos this year. We beat bama and we are in the champ game. They only wish they had a qb like tebow both on and off the field. I’m sure cox is a nice guy, just not a good football player.

don’t know why theres all these GAYTURDS on a UGA blog. don’t you reptiles have something better to do, or more importantly, somewhere else? Go away we don’t care what you think about us. We also dont care about fsu or any other All Crappy Conference teams. Right now were looking to put our hobnailed boot on the insects throats.

No chance at winning. Why even dream. There’s plenty of pity on this side for your team as well. All the talk you do about success and you haven’t played in the Nat champ game in 30 years. Your program is now 6-8 in the sec. Have fun with that. It will stay that way for a while.

You’re right Gator Bob, but a lot of people are talking about our SOS, especially since the last game. But you’re right, if we take care of business this weekend and the SECCG against Bama we’re good to go. I’m out of here. Go Gators!

PS – Dawgbreath, you need some breath mints buddy! Just sayin.

To the Rest of the Dawgs Haters,

As a life-long DAWGS fan, I want to personally Thank You for all the comments here. Especially the negative ones. I am amazed that even as we do not have a perfect season, everyone we have played has done nothing but talk about knocking us off. This started with OSU at the beginning of the year and carries on to GT this saturday. Apparently, we seem to stir some kind of emotion in other teams that none of the rest of you do. I still haven’t heard anyone talking about knocking off FLA in the same way they talk about us. So, Thank You again about all the fine negative comments. Even as a non threat this year we are still getting under you skin.

Poor Georgia fan Heath…. “…. the worst Georgia team in a generation….”

Exceptionally sad to see you dog fans belittle your own team in a weak attempt to lessen the success the Jackets have had under CPJ. As you dog fans gnash your teeth and beat your backs bare, remember those Georgia boys are still human and maybe your prospective recruits can see what the true Georgia fan base is.

When Mark Richt came to GA he hired the best coaches available, and put a 110% into it. When CBV left, instead of going out & hiring the best D-cord to replace CBV, he promoted from within, which would have been fine had Richt really thought Martinez was the best person for the job. I don’t believe he did, and probably thought he would give Martinez a fair shot at it, but in doing so he took a chance of ‘what if it doesn’t work out?’. If Richt ever for one second thought he would have a hard time letting long-time friend Martinez go if he couldn’t handle it, he should have never put himself in that position. Well, he did, and now’s the time to make that choice: Fire him or get fired with him. Sorry. Hopefully lessen learned. Don’t put close friends/family in that position (see Bobby Bowden/Jeff Bowden). I like Richt & I think he’s a great person, and I know this won’t be easy, but all CEO have to make though decisions. Don’t like being a CEO? Go back to running an offense somewhere. Leaving any coach in place because of ‘personal relationship’ is stealing, because you are being paid to make decisions best for the organization. Mark Richt is a Christian man. I believe he will make the right decision.
