Tech fans giggle while UGA fans say, ‘Shut up and deal’

PJ cracks wise; Richt is unamused. (AJC photo by Pouya Dianat)

In times of plenty and in times of want, there’s always Georgia versus Georgia Tech. It’s a game that defines (and sometimes reconfigures) the sport in our state, and by way of public service we offer yet another installment — that’s my way of saying I’ve lost count — of our Field Guide to the opposing sets of fans.

• Tech fans describe the moves Roddy Jones put on Georgia defenders along the sideline as “the old okey-doke.” Georgia fans describe Tech’s stadium as “The joke by Coke.”

• Georgia fans still can’t get over Tech putting the score of last year’s Georgia game on their Coastal Division co-championship rings. Tech fans still can’t get over Georgia players selling SEC championship rings on eBay.

• Tech fans laugh really hard whenever Paul Johnson says anything mildly amusing. Georgia fans stopped laughing at Paul Johnson midway through the third quarter on Nov. 29, 2008.

• Georgia fans don’t take the ACC seriously. Tech fans think SEC superiority is all a figment of Tim Brando’s imagination.

• Two words guaranteed to make Tech fans mad: Chop block. Two words guaranteed to make Georgia fans mad: Excessive celebration.

• Georgia fans believe SEC refs have it in for the Bulldogs. Tech fans believe SEC refs do a fine job — especially that nice Al Ford.

• Tech fans think it’s funny the head of SEC officiating is a Tech grad. Georgia fans think it’s all part of a grand conspiracy.

• Georgia fans are incensed by PETA’s demand that the late Uga VII be replaced by a robot. Tech fans will be incensed if they don’t get the contract to build the robot.

• Tech fans are excited to see the Jackets so high in the BCS rankings. Georgia fans are excited to see the Bulldogs so high in the recruiting rankings.

• Georgia fans can’t believe Tech keeps extending Paul Johnson’s contract. Tech fans would be willing to chip in and help Georgia extend Willie Martinez’s contract.

• Tech fans are eagerly awaiting a rematch with Clemson in Tampa. Georgia fans are eagerly awaiting a rematch with Kentucky in Stegeman Coliseum. (Er, maybe not. Kentucky’s better in hoops, too.)

• Georgia fans cackled when Tech kept going to bowls on the blue turf of exotic Boise. Tech fans with long memories are hoping like crazy Georgia lands in Shreveport, where every night is surf-and-turf at Red Lobster.

• The Tech fan’s favorite moment of 2009: Josh Nesbitt stealing the ball from a Florida State linebacker. The Georgia fan’s least favorite moment of 2009: Joe Cox flipping the ball to a Kentucky lineman.

• Georgia fans can’t understand what has happened to Mark Richt. Tech fans think what has happened to Mark Richt has a lot to do with Paul Johnson.

• Tech fans get really miffed if their team doesn’t wear gold. Georgia fans get really miffed if their team wears black helmets.

• Georgia fans still make fun of Tech’s (lack of) attendance. Tech fans figure that’s the last resort of a fading program: If you can’t beat ‘em on the field, outnumber ‘em in the stands.

• This season has Tech fans recalling the Bobby Dodd Era. This season has Georgia fans recalling the Ray Goff Era.

GT fan that doesn’t get it about Richt…where’s the love and what has he done so wrong? Other than spending a few hours a week at a tanning salon which could be on his lunch break, why so negative? You UGA fans want to brow beat Tech fans to death about history and not one season but your quick to want to run Richt off because of one season and not take a look at the history you shove down our throats on this blog.

Georgia is a prominent national program even in a rebuilding year. Tech is a prominent national program only when Georgia has its worst year of the decade.

Tech people like to raise their noses in the air and call their school, “The Institute,” as if that’s a big deal. Georgia fans call it the Institute, too … The Insect Institute.

Tech fans hope that the current trend will be the norm. Georgia fans know it wont happen.

Congratulations Tech fans on being “King of the Cupcakes. (aka the ACC divisional)”

Tech fans love to spew lies about the exceptional mental capacity of their athletes. Georgia fans know Tech players just don’t go to class and that they call themselves engineering majors because general and remedial studies they really major in tarnish the Tech “standard.”

A BCS championship? NO. Oh yeah they beat Georgia. The ultimate prize for Tech. WIN SOMETHING THEN BRAG.

I love how Georgia haters think that this season is a sign that Georgia Tech is somehow the standard of excellence when it comes to football in this state while the Bulldogs simply play second fiddle. Yes, the Yellow Jackets are having a far more successful year than the Dawgs. I don’t believe anyone can justifiably argue otherwise. But let’s not get carried away here. Allow me to show the last 15 meetings between these two programs. Notice the three-year span from 1998 to 2000. Clearly, the shift in power is cyclical and ultimately temporary. More so when it comes to Tech. So, yes, this is a Georgia-basher’s dream. A year when Tech is in the top-10 and Georgia is struggling mightily. But lets not forget who the dominant program is and always will be in this state.

1993: UGA 43, Tech 10
1994: UGA 48, Tech 10
1995: UGA 18, Tech 17
1996: UGA 19, Tech 10
1997: UGA 27, Tech 24
1998: Tech 21, UGA 19
1999: Tech 51, UGA 48 (OT)
2000: Tech 27, UGA 15
2001: UGA 31, Tech 17
2002: UGA 51, Tech 7
2003: UGA 34, Tech 17
2004: UGA 19, Tech 13
2005: UGA 14, Tech 7
2006: UGA 15, Tech 12
2007: UGA 31, Tech 17
2008: Tech 45, UGA 42

Wow, the line is Tech -7. You’d think, given that this year’s NATS are the most dominant football team in the history of college football, it’s be -24 or something like that.

Poor bugs. Lose this one Saturday, to the worst Georgia team in a generation, and your whole little season goes down the drain. How many nerds make the trip to the Anti Competitive Conference championship if they lose the only game that matters to them?

Chan didnt even stoop so low as a 6-6 record. The thing that’s gotta keep you up at night is that it’s not going to get any better for you next year either. It’s over guys…new sheriff…new rules. And given your joke of an AD, basketball sucks as well. Lose to Wofford at home and get blown out by UAB? Sucks to be a bulldog. I feel sorry for you guys.

Florida has beaten Georgia so many times that losing has become a learned trait at Georgia. In the next few years the Bulldogs will lose games 60 percent of the schools they play. They are not being coached very well.
Good luck Georgia Tech.

@Dallas I’ve never understood it myself. A lot of hatred directed at UGA over the years from the local writers and other fans. UGA is really no different than many programs. We strive to be a top tier program which we haven’t quite reached. We have good and bad fans just like any other school, which Tech has clearly demonstrated this year. Anyway Go Dawgs!
