How three points and one man changed football in Georgia

Three points on a rainy day when 87 were scored. Three points that halted a seven-year run of losing for one side and induced an abject reversal for the other. Three points that changed the state of college football in a state that lives for college football.

Georgia Tech beat Georgia 45-42 on Nov. 29, 2008, and never has one skinny victory assumed such heft. Tech is now the champion of the ACC Coastal Division and has been ensconced among the nation’s top 10 teams for a month. Georgia has had its worst season under Mark Richt and could be bound for  Shreveport. You can argue that a different result 12 months ago wouldn’t have affected anything that has occurred in 2009, but you’d be wrong.

We stopped seeing Tech as hopeless during the first seven minutes of that famous third quarter. The Jackets went from 28-12 behind to 35-28 ahead in the time it took you to say, “There goes Dwyer!” And when it ended, Tech having won for the first time since George O’Leary was coaching against Jim Donnan, this much was clear: Mark Richt wasn’t coaching against Chan Gailey anymore.

Gailey tried six times against Richt, lost six times. In 2006 he even had the better team. Didn’t matter. There was something about Gailey that made you believe he could go 0-for-100 against the Bulldogs.  Paul Johnson needed only one swing. Paul Johnson, as we now know, is different.

The Tech booster (and former co-captain under Bobby Dodd) Taz Anderson tells the story: Not long after Johnson was hired, he and Anderson were playing golf. The format was alternate shot. Johnson stood over the second shot on a par-5 hole. Anderson said, “Might want to lay up, Coach.” Johnson said, “Oh, I don’t know.” And knocked the darn thing on the green.

Just as faint heart never won fair maiden (really old saying), a timid Tech wasn’t going to unhorse Georgia. Tech stopped being timid the day Johnson strode — PJ doesn’t so much walk as he strides — through the door. Here’s a man secure enough to use an offense that supposedly ran its course decades ago, secure enough to run an actual play on any fourth-and-you-name-it. Johnson doesn’t care what you think of him. He’s so secure in himself and his methods that he needs no endorsement.

Nor, to hear him tell it, does he necessarily need to beat Georgia. “I’m not making it out to be the Super Bowl the way you guys are,” he said at his media briefing Tuesday. “I’m not going to let one game define our season.”

And then: “I don’t want to leave the impression that it’s not important. It is important. But I’m going to get Georgia Tech to the point where our program is bigger than one game.”

It helped that PJ won that one game on his first try. (”Been there, done that,” he said Tuesday.)  Richt was no longer the scourge of the heated series but the guy who’d lost to the guy with the high school offense. Willie Martinez was the coordinator who couldn’t stop an offense that completed one pass (that on the game’s first snap).  Georgia was no longer mighty, Tech no longer meek.

Had Georgia won on Nov. 29, 2008 — the 2009 Georgia media guide, perhaps inadvertently, lists the score of the game as 42-42 — the Bulldogs would have rounded off a disappointing season by at least reasserting their in-state dominance. Instead they laid themselves open to question, and in the succeeding Richt has seemed to have no answers. The guy who works at North and Techwood has hijacked every answer.

And now PJ and his program move from strength to strength, while Richt is under heavy pressure to change something, anything. Johnson’s team could play in the Orange Bowl. Richt’s just lost at home to Kentucky. Johnson’s team is the rising power, Richt’s the fading light. Three points did all that. Three points and one cocksure coach.

Surely things are better at Tech then they are in Athens. But it really is one season, so I think the showering of love all over CPJ and the Tech program is a little premature. Then again, the same love came CMR way pretty quickly, so I guess that is just the way the AJC rolls.

I don’t expect a good outcome for the Dawgs this weekend, but we aren’t in some ten year swoon as some would love to think.

Just remember…things are never as bad or as good as they seem.

What happens if UGA beats Tech this year MB? I will concede that beating UGA last year may have given Tech the confidence it needed to get over the hump, but I think football changed in Georgia when CMR endorsed his little endzone dance on the Gators. That was the top of the mountain for this staff and it’s been in decline since. Yes, there have been highlights along the way since then but that display just goes to show you CMR is more comfortable being the likable, loyal, players’ coach and I fear it will be his ultimate downfall.

Can’t wait for Saturday, Dogs have nothing to lose. Hopefully Tech will falter under the pressure of being a big favorite. For once the pressure will be on the Jackets not to lose this rivalry, we’ll see how it goes, but I’m not that optimistic.

What has truly changed? To be sure, Coach Johnson seems to have changed an abject mindset of failure at Georgia Tech. To imply that Georgia’s poor season this year (and, by unspoken implication, future seasons) is directly related to one GT victory requires a leap in logic too large to contemplate seriously

Three points and one poorly coached defense by UGA. How does UGA stop Tech on offense? Plan your defensive schemes like LSU last year and Miami this year. If your players will not play defense as it should be designed UGA will lose badly. You must play assignment defense to defeat the triple option, LSU last year did just that. If UGA comes out in the standard 4-3 defense with corners 10 yards off receivers and saftey’s 20 yards off the line of scrimage it will be ugly for UGA. Sadly, our tackling skills have regressed to a deplorable level. This is the first time in many many years that upon entering this game I do not expext to win. Do I want us to win? Of course! Do I expect Martinez to have our defense prepared to play NO! That is what makes me sad. Does Tech have better athletes than UGA? No way! The difference is called coaching!!

I’m a Tech fan, but I have to agree with Joe above. And if you asked CPJ, he would agree. I’ve heard him say many times “We haven’t won anything yet.”

The one thing that Joe and other UGA fans do have to realize, and that Mark stated very well, is this: the fear is gone. That feeling that something will always go wrong and in the end we have no conrol over the outcome when we play UGA has been with Tech for decades now. CPJ knows he will not win every game, but he expects to win every game. There is a difference. Do you think Mark Richt believes that in his heart with Florida? And even if UGA wasn’t having the problems they are now, he would feel exactly the same way. He just isn’t afraid to win.

Ramblinwreck83

I won’t go as far as to say that UGA is in a complete decline, but this was a bad season for them on all accounts by players not making plays and coaches failing their players. I fully expect UGA to be much better next season and this rivalry to be a good one for years to come.

Oh Yeah, Joe. You should down grade the victory from last year because the shoe has been on the other foot before. Tech beat a team by all accounts should’ve won that game and probably had the better team especially with a preseason #1 ranking. Offense and Defense are all part of the game, whether one plays bad or not. If you remember, Tech’s defense gave up 42 points in that game.

GT & PJ were awesome for beating UGA last year…same team same coach so what were they after the LSU game????

The bottom line is CMR and PJ are proven winners and will have great years and not so great years. To take a single year or two or few games and draw broad conculsions shows your ignorance.

Reminds me a lot of the crap Bradley wrote after Georgia beat the Gators in 2007. About how the Bulldogs had changed the dynamics of the series with that win and how he expected the series to shift towards UGA dominance.

As the Gators proved, Bradley is not a very good prognosticator of things to come. How could he be when he attended Kentucky, a school that is lost on the football field?

I’m a Gator but I’m going to throw Georgia a bone here. Last years score means nothing. When Georgia loses this year its because Tech has a better team. It will not be an indicator of things to come. When Tech has actually begun to dominate Georgia like the Gators have, you write this article.

Just in case I have not said it enough in the previous 51 weeks, Tech won last year.

On paper it looks like the Dawgs have no chance, maybe, maybe not. As a member in good standing of the Sightless Dead Greek Poets Society, I believe my team can win any game. That ball bounces funny.

It will be fun to finnally just play the game and let the chips fall where they may. I just pray for a good game, no personal foul late hits and no career ending injuries for the players.

Tech you have a good man in PJ. I hope you can keep him. If you want to be the best you have to play the best and right now, PJ is one of the best. I will be pulling for you in Tampa, this weekend, not so much.

The premise of this article is ridiculous. The author probably aware of that but if you’ve noticed, AJC has got to do something — anything — to increase readership and Georgia Tech’s great season (along with UGA’s issues) is an opportunity for them. Drumming up Tech as though they’re the next Southern Cal and kicking UGA during a down season (one of the five top teams in wins over the last decade, incidentally) are both good for the paper. It’s simply business. But I no longer expect any keen insights or real journalism from the Sports section at AJC!

We will find out Saturday night how Tech and CPJ handle being in the “favorite” roll. Will that 3 point victory from last year help them on Saturday night? Of course it will, mentally. But, it does not mean a “shift in power” until Tech beats UGA on a consistant basis. UGA will ALMOST always have better individual athletes accross the roster (this year is the exception). To beat UGA on a regular basis Tech needs 3 things: Great Coach, Great System, and Great Confidence. Great Coach and Great System are in place. Saturday night around 8:10 pm, we know know if the Confidence is in place. In my opinion, unlike most Tech games this year, the outcome of this game will be determined first 10 minutes. If UGA can stop Tech’s offense even once in the first 10 minutes, then game on! If not – it could be a REVERSAL of the 2002 game when UGA won 51 – 7.

I still think UGA’s concentration level will be up and the turnovers and penalties will be down.

You’re such a freaking poon. You know everyone keeps bitcing about that endzone dance, but you know what? IT WORKED IN THAT GAME! That UGA team matched up well with Florida, they just needed to have the fight and the belief that they could beat their ass. I will say it AGAIN: UGA didn’t win that game because of a dance, they won it because they imposed their will on Florida in that game! Watch the tape if you don’t believe me. Guys like Terence Moore would ridicule UGA about being dominated by Florida in the AJC yet would question Richt’s methods when they finally did win! Playing like your hair is on fire is what wins football games, and that’s exactly how UGA played that day! I’ll tell you one thing right now: if UGA played Tech last year with the same intensity that they played against Florida in 2007, the Dawgs would have blown the Jackets out! Maybe one of these days the Dawgs will quit playing like a bunch of wet pussies and get back into the business of out hitting opposing players. And if they don’t then maybe we should hire a coach who will bench their sorry asses for even thinking of quitting on the field!

They is some bigger fish to fry. Yesterday, Paula Deen was hit in the face by a ham and here we are talking about how football has changed in Georgia. A 12-pound ham. Right in the face. Two days on the front page of ajc.com complete with video. Flying hams is big news. She took that hit like it was delivered by Chris Houston and remained on her feet. Now, that’s news.

@ Shane:

59 wins divided by 103 total meetings equals a winning percentage of 57%. While that is a winning record, it’s no where near the 80% winning percentage you suggest.

Or maybe that’s too much math and reason for you.

We have won 22 of the last 30 meetings which is around 73 percent so i wasnt that far off.

Plus we have only played 101 times. The 1943 and 1944 games dont count because UGA men were off winning WWII while the pansies stayed home.

Dan..The dance signified what was wrong with the program. If you need your players to dance in the endzone to get them fired up for a UGA FL rivalry game then you haven’t done your job. It also showed a disregard for getting penalties, something that’s been a problem SINCE! Of course you say it worked because we won. How about that blackout vs. Bama, how’d that motivational tactic work??? It worked against Auburn…so was it really the jerseys and the dancing that won against Florida and Auburn??? NO! If you can’t see that the lack of discipline and focus have been our demise, then you sir are the poon.

Richt is so good, 4th winningest active coach, he coaches in the SEC, the toughest conference, and wins so many games, you fans have one bad year and all the sudden Richt can’t coach? Ask FSU how their program did after Richt left–no more Heisman’s, no more Natl’ Championships, no more lots of consecutive winning games years?

The last time time Richt had a 4 loss year, what happened the next year? #2 Natl’ ranking 2007 (should have been #1–Georgia WAS the Natl Champion that year). Next year, with:

Green/Brown at WR (#1/#2 ranked WR’s in U.S.)
Ealey at RB (the guy who broke Herschel Walker’s rushing records), Murray at QB (we’ll see how long those 1 yard TD rushes Tim Tebow records last–I say we break his record during the Ga/Fla game)
Charles at TE (top TE in U.S.)

It’s going to be fun beating up on Ga Tech. Aaron Murray kind of gives you that Jamelle Holliday feeling, right? Don’t remember Holliday? Oh, he’s the QB who led his teasm to an 11-1 record and Natl’ Championship, as a Freshman. Kosar at Miami had a good freshman QB year too: 61% pass completion, 2300 yards, 15 TD’s, 11-1. Murray will be in the Heisman talk EVERY year at Georgia. Ealey/Green/Brown/Charles might too. We’re going to on a Heisman/Natl’ Championship run like USC did.

I gotta love those posts responding to “Shane’s” whining about 18-year-olds. I am guessing Shane himself was never in the military, and certainly spent no time at a military academy where it is discipline, discipline from morning until, well, the next morning. Doesn’t appear to me that with this year so far along, Peeples broke anything. If his feelings got hurt — and there was no indication of it — they surely healed up well, don’t you think? If “Shane” wants to see 18-year-olds yelled at and cussed out and generally manhandled he should get his keister down to the Marine Corps recruiting office. I got worse in one day of boot than in six years of football. Excellent for developing an intolerance for really ignorant posts, it didn’t seem to hurt me any.

But let’s not dwell on the past, it’s 2009, not 2008 and things are different. No Stafford, no Moreno, UGA has a worse defense than last year. Tech is on a roll with all kinds of momentum. UGA just lost to Kentucky and everyone’s questioning the coaching staff.

The fact is, two of the best college football coaches in the country reside in our great state. Mark Richt’s all-time winning percentage is among the all-time leaders, and CPJ’s is not far behind. (As a matter of fact, if you take away his first season at the Naval Academy, Johnson’s winning percentage is even higher than Richt’s.) I refuse to believe that the Dogs are in any kind of long-term decline. Rather, I am thankful that BOTH SCHOOLS now have excellent coaching staffs and the opportunity to make this rivalry once again among the best in the nation.

Will GT be able to reel off seven or eight in a row, as the Dogs recently did? Not likely. But are we likely to LOSE 3-4 in a row while CPJ is at the helm … I don’t think so!!!! As Ted said at 11:19, I hope one day soon we’ll see both schools enter this game undefeated, with the winner (hopefully the Jackets) bound for the MNC game.

Knowing most sports dads, I’d actually have to say most of them would be disappointed if their sons were getting coached by someone that didn’t cuss in their face.

And how about Coach K at Duke. The guy has one of the foulest mouths I’ve ever seen. You need a damn bath after listening to him. I would say he does pretty well recruiting. When Tech wins a majority of these games in a 10-15 year period and you begin to see more Tech flags than UGA flags in metro Atlanta then there will have been a power shift. I don’t know what next year’s Tech and Georgia teams will be like, and neither do you, but this year’s teams have had remarkably consistent characters. Here’s how I think this week sorts out:

Tech will be down 16-14 at the half, with one of Tech’s TDs on a long “lucky” pass to Thomas, and the other on a drive saved by an idiotic late hit by UGa, the Tech bandwagon fans will be moaning and whining, UGa fans will think they’ve won, and CPJ will figure out the hitch in the giddyup, just as he has for the last 8 games. One eight-minute drive later, it’ll be essentially over. 35-23, Tech.

CMR needs to make several asst coaching changes beginning w/ Martinez, then Bobo (let’s face it, the offense hasn’t done the defense any favors over the past two years, and his play calling is so predictable!), and finally, Fabris (special teams has been a nightmare!). The Dawgs problems have ALL been self-inflicted, but let the bumblebees and their pathetic fare-weather fan base bask in the glory of their fluke offense and this years underwhelming success story in what has historically been one of the weakest conferences in the country! Good comment. Tech fan here but I agree.

Look folks lets be realistic here. Including the pending 2010 class UGA has had six straight top ten recruiting classes. The last six GT recruiting classes are one mid-twenty (2006) and the rest high 30 & low 40 recruiting classes. Now year in & year out, if that trend continues UGA will win most of the time. But not all the time.

If Johnson does, in fact, successfully recruit players picked to run his system, then that is the same as a top 10 class. But we are talking offense here. The problem GT will have is on defense. The defense they run is nothing extraordinary systemwise. Only recruiting 4 & 5 star players will bring the defense up to championship level.
And over the years they have not shown the ability to do that.

What has impressed me about Johnson is not the X & O part, but the leadership. He brought in a spread option & got players recruited for a pro style offense to completely buy into the spread option. Going 9 wins & 4 losses last year was remarkable. Going 10 wins or better the second year is even more remarkable.

If Tech can keep Johnson & he recruits, the program should be a top 20 contender every year.

But remember, UGA should be a top 10 contender every year based on their recruiting.

It is unreal how things have changed in one year… Now UGA is still bring in a good recruiting class and GT is beneath the radar, but PJ doesnt care. You guys are funny. If Georgia wins, which is highly unlikely but certainly not impossible, what will you then write about? It was a mere 8 weeks ago when this formerly great newspaper was full of articles and columns on how the opposition had caught up with Johnson’s offense. It was the talk of the town after the Miami game. One game later, it all disappears.

You are worse than bandwagon fans who jump on and off again so quickly they wind up with two broken legs. The article is not pathetic. It actually is pretty good. The problem is that it is just like the one yesterday and the day before and the day before that.

Here’s a quote from a Mark Bradley article in 2002 that’s in the “History is on Tech’s side” link on the Tech front page:

“Two years ago, there was among Georgia fans a real fear that their team might never again get it right. Two years later, there’s the real possibility that the Bulldogs could play for the national championship.

“How has the course of a program turned so quickly and completely?

“The easy answer is to credit Mark Richt, and this is one of those times when the easy answer seems correct. ‘There was a fresh start,’ Jon Stinchcomb said, ‘a new coaching staff, a new motto.’ Under Ray Goff and Jim Donnan, Georgia seemed destined to fail. Under Richt, the Bulldogs see no reason why they shouldn’t win anything and everything.”

Here’ how this article will look in 2009:

“Two years ago, there was among Georgia Tech fans a real fear that their team might never again get it right. Two years later, there’s the real possibility that the Jackets could play for the national championship.

“How has the course of a program turned so quickly and completely?

“The easy answer is to credit Paul Johnson, and this is one of those times when the easy answer seems correct. ‘There was a fresh start,’ Jon Dwyer said, ‘a new coaching staff, a new motto.’ Under Chan Gailey, Georgia Tech seemed destined to fail. Under Johnson, the Jackets see no reason why they shouldn’t win anything and everything.”

Georgia Tech under Paul Johnson is a real football team. The days of old are long gone. Paul Johnson has shown what very few others knew or believed; :this offense will work in a BCS Conference.” Now look at the experts! In fact the AJC had Paul Johnson struggling his first couple of years before this offense would ever be ready. But in the end TEAMS win games, NOT players.

A story on Paul Johnson’s record in rivalry games is now available for viewing on http://isportsweb.com. The Yellow Jackets are getting ready for their big game against Georgia on Saturday. THWG!

To the sensible Tech fans good luck this weekend, though I hope it’s the Red and Black who are celebrating. For the record, I doubt we can win. We just commit too many stupid penalties. But, I do see our defense improving but I think the spread will probably cause the D to wilt. Our offense- well, with Greene there is always a possibility of big plays. Without him, significantly lower percentages of the big play. Our running backs are okay but our O-Line is not very good. Should be interesting how we match up with your defense. If UGA keeps the penalties and turnovers in check this could be a great, close game. If Georgia does what it usually does then this will be a laugher for Tech. However, and hate it if you must but, Go Dawgs!!!

Collegeballfan – how right you are.

Based on the success of the offense, we’ll get the players we need to continue running that offense successfully. Many players will play in this offense in order to play for a winner.

Based on the success of the offense, we’ll be able to begin recruiting the 4 and 5 star defenders we need; it will be much less of a sales job to convince those high-qual recruits on the defensive side.

There are plenty of players in Georgia for both Tech and GA. What both programs need to do is lessen the inroads being made by FL, AL, TN, AU, SC, MIA, FSU, etc. – keep these players in-state.

Over time, talent levels will adjust based on the success of the programs on the field; what will make the difference most of the time is acquisition of that NFL 1st-round talent at skill positions, most notably QB.

AL is going to find out soon that having a top defense without a “franchise” QB is good enough to get into the Top 5, but will not be enough to win the MNC.

Shane your a joke. 18 year old kids volunteered to play football. They have that choice after they’ve received a scholarship. A lot of coaches get in their players faces when they mess up. It helps get their mind back in the game and make sure they don’t make the same mistake twice. I guess MR needs to try it a little more often since his players are the most undiscipline teams in the entire nation. All the personal fouls they committ & turnovers. I guess he’s too nice with them in practice.

Dawg fan here

Coach Johnson is a fine coach and has and will continue to have success at Tech. But that does not mean that one or even two wins by Tech signals football dominance. Example: The Gators have owed my Dawgs the past 18 years. If the Dawgs won the next two it does not mean Georgia dominance over Florida, just would mean we won the last two.

Dominance is consistently winning a majority. 7 of the last 8. 15 of the last 19 those types of numbers. Until then it is just a win or two.

Georgia may be down for a year or even two. But not forever. They will get quality talent. And if its CMR or someone else coaching, will be back on top in the state of Georgia.

Too bad Dawg fans. I told you at the beginning of the season that it was going to suck to be a Georgia Bulldog football fan. When you start the season knowing the best you can do is play for 2nd place in your half of the conference and that you will lose to your in state rival – it has to suck (much like your football team).

I also told you that you would be at least a five loss team – well make it six after Saturday. You just have to live with the fact that UGA is no longer a premier football program and as long as Meyer stays at UF and CPJ stays at Tech you will always be playing for second place while we contend for National Championships.

Mark — I understand that the binary conclusions make for a more simple narrative, but such lack of sophistication in logic and analysis demeans both you and the reader. So, if by change UGA actually wins on Saturday, and if we apply the same simple logic you just put, are we to conclude that the whole thing has just flipped again? GT will suddenly be on a glide path of unmitigated decline, Mark Richt will suddenly be the better coach and we will have borne witness to the dawning of a new ascension in UGA dominance?

Come on man, THINK Mark THINK, you really can do better than this. Writing is hard, I will give you that, but you can do it. Surely you can come up with a less predictable angle on this deal. What you offered up today is the same gratuitous, warmed over tripe that we have read from you and Brother Schultz no less than 30 times since last November — which is…..Martinez is horrible, Richt is too nice and lost his way, PJ is working magic with a “high school” offense and Paul Johnson is Clint Eastwood in Tech drag, blah, blah, blah. We get it. Okay? We get it. Can you at least attempt to share a unique perspective?

I am a GT fan, and I’ll be honest, I didn’t think I’d ever be saying this. The UGA game is not that big of deal. GT’s won 10 games and a win over Clemson is what’s really important. A loss to UGA won’t ruin GT’s season or save UGA’s. GT has established itself as a top tier program and UGA is pathetic. That’s not going to change for at least two more seasons. That’s just the way it is. GT 52 – UGA – 17.

The Truth- think about that again. What would it say for Tech if they can’t beat UGA in a year that you are so far up and we are so far down. If there was ever a chance to take advantage of the perception of this rivalry it is this year. Fail to do so and the ramifications may be felt the following week against Clemson and perhaps in the pysche of this series again. Plus, the national media will begin dismissing you again. This is an absolute must win game for Tech.

Mutt Quote: “We have two Heismans”
Jacket Quote: “We have THE Heisman”

Winner: Tech – Nesbitt, Dwyer are comparable to the nation’s best this year – but they play on a TEAM, a SYSTEM. (An 11-1 system after Saturday at that!) Individual accolades get you no crystal trophies and at last count, Atlanta still has 4 to your 1.

Mutt Quote: “If only we’d tackled better in last year’s game”
Jacket Quote: “What about the phantom fumble three years ago?”

Winner: TECH! Despite the 51-7 game under Gailey, most of the 7 losses were DOWN TO THE WIRE going into the middle of the 4th and truth be told, (despite the disappointment of the fleabag nation, Tech could’ve easily won 2 or 3 of those 7!

Tom Dienhart
Rivals.com College Football Senior Writer

You can call the triple-option flexbone offense of Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson old, antiquated and passe — but you also must call it effective.

In just two seasons, Johnson and his unique attack have Georgia Tech on the brink of the school’s first ACC championship since 1998. And just think: Many felt Johnson couldn’t win in a major conference with this ground-pounding, misdirection offense.

Johnson debuted at Tech last season with a 9-4 record that included a trip to the Chick-fil-A Bowl. Perhaps his most impressive feat was a victory at Georgia, the Yellow Jackets’ first over the Bulldogs since 2000. Tech will go for another triumph over Georgia this weekend.

Paul Johnson has quickly found success at Georgia Tech.
This season, the Yellow Jackets are 10-1 and already have wrapped up the ACC Coastal Division. Johnson recently agreed to a one-year contract extension that pushes his deal to 2016.

Before arriving in Atlanta, Johnson and the flexbone thrived at Navy for six seasons. He was 45-29 at Navy, went to four bowl games and won six Commander-in-Chief trophies. The highlight of his tenure in Annapolis was a 46-44 triple-overtime win at Notre Dame in 2007 that ended the Midshipmen’s 43-game losing streak to the Fighting Irish.

Johnson, 52, also enjoyed a stellar run as coach of FCS member Georgia Southern from 1997-2001. He went 62-10, advanced to the playoffs each season, played in three national title games and won two championships.

Rivals.com caught up with Johnson this week.

What are looking for from your team down the stretch?

We are looking for some inexperienced guys to play better and to play at a winning level. Just more consistently, regardless of our injuries. We have 11 guys out there. We need to play well. Just more consistency in how they play.

When did you know this potentially could be a special year?

I never thought that, ‘Wow, this could be a special team.’ We just tried to get ready every week and play. I guess once we got past Virginia Tech [on Oct. 17], that gave us a chance to get back in the conference race. Then each game was like a single-game elimination.

I didn’t think anyone would win our division with two losses. I didn’t have any idea Miami would lose three games in our league. I knew they had the tiebreaker on us. I felt like we had to win out to win, and we just kind of approached it that way. Now that we have won our division, we have a chance to have a special year.

Which part of your offense doesn’t get enough credit?

[Wide receiver] Demaryius Thomas has really good numbers. And our passing efficiency is really good. We don’t throw it much, but if you look at the efficiency, it’s pretty good.

Are you pleased with the development of the defense?

We have been hot and cold. Some games, we have been tremendous. I think the last half of the year, we have gotten better. We are focused in and have cut back and dialed in on trying to get good at something, and we’ve gotten better at stopping the run. When you do that, at least you have something you can hang your hat on.

I don’t know if people realize that we have just six scholarship seniors on the team. We are playing with 79 scholarships because we held some because we had to balance out the classes. If we didn’t, we weren’t going to be able to sign almost anyone this year. Then we lost three or four starters on defense fairly early this year, so it has been a little bit of a mix-and-match work-in-progress.

Which part of the offense still needs to develop?

We aren’t where we’d like to be on the line of scrimmage. Not close. Not athletically, physically ?

Josh Nesbitt has produced 2,265 yards of total offense and 16 touchdowns this season.
What has made quarterback Josh Nesbitt so effective?

I think he has tremendous toughness. He is a fierce competitor who likes to win. He has made himself a good runner. He’s strong, he breaks tackles. He’s not going to run away from anybody. But he does break some tackles, puts his pads down and gets some tough yards. I just think he has gotten more comfortable with what he’s doing. And I think he’s enjoying it.

Is there a particular defensive scheme that gives you the most trouble?

You get a variation. It’s not any one thing. Everyone has their own ideas.

Did you think success would come this quickly?

I just thought about trying to get better every day and taking it one game at a time and trying to win a game. I never thought about what success would be or thought, ‘Hey, we have to get this number or that number of wins,’ or anything else. We just kind of hit it head on and started working, and it’s just kind of worked out for us.

Do you grow tired of answering questions about your scheme?

The biggest thing you get tired of answering is [that] as soon as you have a game that somebody plays good against you on defense ? well, that’s it, that’s the blueprint, it’s over. It’s like if you’re running a conventional offense and somebody plays you pretty good, they just happened to play pretty good. That’s probably the most frustrating thing.

Why do coaches say it’s hard to prepare for this offense in one week?

I think they probably heard someone else say that. It’s different. ? It’s different than being able to put your hand down, run straight upfield and rush the passer. So many people have all of their zone blitzes and all of the things they’re doing to stop different things, and a lot of that stuff isn’t very good against what we do. It’s just different, and they have to re-tool a little bit.

This offense is prone to fumbles. What do you do to try to limit them?

We work on ball security, but I’m not even buying the notion that they’re going to happen. I don’t think they have to happen any more than people saying interceptions are going to happen when you throw the ball. I just think you have to work on it.

What’s the most important trait the quarterback must possess to run your offense?

I think it’s like any offense — leadership, being able to run the show. For us, we need an athletic quarterback, a guy who can run a little bit and throw. But I think there are a lot of those guys out there.

What was the appeal of coming to Georgia Tech?

I think I was ready for another challenge. I think we had about maxed out what we can do at the [Naval] Academy. I think if you get in the top 25 there, that’s good. That’s probably about what you’re going to do. We felt like the ceiling was a little bit higher here. It was in a part of the country where we wanted to live. The school had a lot of history and tradition. If we were going to move, that was the time to do it.

Can you win a national championship here?

I think so. I think that the way the thing is set up now, you have to be awfully lucky. We could have won every game we played this year and still not had a chance to play for the national title. It’s all where you start.

What do you need facility-wise to stay competitive?

I was just talking to the athletic director [Dan Radakovich], and we are in the process of seeing about getting an indoor facility. I’m encouraged. I think we have a chance of that happening. We are at a place where the weather isn’t that big of an issue, but it would be nice for lightning. And there are days when we get some heavy rains, so it would be nice to be able to have a place where we can go inside.

Does the ACC get a bad rap?

I think you can make a case any way you want. If you look at the out-of-conference wins. I mean, Stanford has some big wins in the Pac-10 and Wake Forest beat them. Virginia Tech beat Nebraska, which won the Big 12 North. At this point, we are 2-0 in the SEC [with wins over Mississippi State and Vanderbilt]. Miami beat Oklahoma, and they have three losses in our league. You can go on and on. Every time someone points out that ‘they’ lost to William & Mary, the bottom teams did. But the teams in the middle and at the top also had some pretty impressive wins.

Were you happy to see Navy beat Notre Dame again?

I was really happy for them. That’s great. Kenny [Niumatalolo] has done a really good job and kept it going. We talk some; I wouldn’t say real often. We mostly text.

Would you like to see a playoff, considering your FCS experience?

I really would. We are the only sport that doesn’t have a playoff in the NCAA. I’m not saying that for us this year because I don’t even know how we are going to finish. I’m just saying overall. I wouldn’t care if my team was 5-5 right now; I still think that it makes sense to have a playoff. When every other sport can do it, I don’t know why we can’t.

Aah – I always love the old “false choice”. It keeps many journalists employed and is the hallmark of a couple of television networks (Fox, MSNBC, ….)

If GT is good then UGA must be bad. If CPJ is good than CMR is bad….etc, etc.

Both Johnson and Richt are good coaches with good track records. Bashing Johnson’s record doesn’t improve Richt’s. Neither does bashing Richt for this year make Johnson’s record any better.
Assuming both coaches compete against each other the next several years, the games should be close as will the records. It will be a great deal different than when Gailey was coaching at GT.
All I ask from GT is that they play hard and that they play well and I expect that under Johnson. If they win great, if they lose that’s the breaks but I never want to see anything like some of the performances under Gailey when GT flat out quit

Looking forward to the 3-game slate of ACC v SEC this weekend. Clemson and GT should make it 2-1, but it would be sweet to see a FSU upset over the Gators to make it 3-0. Not likely, but certainly a possibility.

Football games are not won in an editorial or opinion section, they’re won on the field. It doesn’t matter what the writers think about who will win the game Saturday night. The bottom line is that who ever takes care of the ball the best and plays the best defense on that night should win. How many times has someone been favored to win only to lose because of turnovers and poor defense. We’ve seen that on both teams. So we’ll see. Go Tech!

Paul Johnson is a good coach…not a great coach as you Tech fans want to believe.Just reading your comments on this blog proves one unmistakeable thing…Tech fans and the Tech program have a huge inferiority complex when it comes to Georgia. It jumps out with each blog you nerds write…it actually pains you doesn’t it that UGA has been so good and dominant over your football program over the years and you’ve been so bad. Congratulations! Its about time you showed up…I don’t think it will last long though. If you think UGA is going away and won’t correct their current problems I’ve got news for you. They got more money than a show pony can jump over and the problem will be corrected..sooner than later. The alumni will make sure of that…believe me. So have fun while you can..it won’t last long..history shows us that..It took you nerds eight years to finally show up and win a game….I’d worry now about filling your high school stadium up on Saturday because there will be more Georgia fans in the seats than Tech fans..you can bet the house on that….Tech fans are known for being cheap…the only time they let go of a dollar is to get a better grip. Its funny, what Bradley is now saying about CPJ he said verbatium about CMR six years ago…guess he’s running out of material or just a poor journalist. PJ hit the door cocksure, not after the Georgia game. John Wayne was cocky when the movie started not after he belted a few punks around. PJ made history with Irk Russel at Georgia Southern, made history at Navy and has made history here. He may loose the game Saturday but Georgia is not going to feel any better about themselves because this is not about one game it is about a sea change. Not only with Tech which was kind of moving that way all along but also about Georgia and competing in the SEC. Beating Tech will not take back Kentucky or Tennessee or Florida. They got excited about beating Auburn in Athens by a thin seven, well Auburn is at Auburn next year and they are going up and Georgia is going down. A win over Tech won’t mean a thing, like Sir Winston said only I talk about Tech, we’ll wait up tomorrow sober and you will still be ugly. Everything runs in cycles: the stock market, the economy, the fortunes of various political parties and politicians and won/loss records of college football teams. That is to be expected. What is not to be expected is that, when the cycle trends downward, as it ultimately will, those responsible treat it in a CAVALIER manner. Steps have to be taken to reestablish the upward trajectory. Circumstances change and individuals must adapt to the new environment. Richt needs to realize that the SEC is no longer the same as it was nine years ago. The conference has gotten better and Richt is going to have to change some of his old ways and part with some of his old cronies if he wants to reestablish himself as one of the league’s better coaches. If he does not do this, Richt will be gone and UGA will find someone who can and who will. There are plenty of coaches out in college football who would take Richt’s spot in a second, especially at $3 million a year. As my old inorganic chemistry professor used to say a long time ago, “A word to the wise is sufficient”. Richt had better be that wise, because he will surely find out that UGA doesn’t owe him anything. Moreover, Richt owes UGA a lot.

When we was playing ball we had a mascot but it wasn’t a real panther- just a band girl dressed up to look like a panther. Sometimes me and Jeff would have to walk with her to keep her from getting turned over by kids from another school. Turning over the panther was one of the favorite things they could do because the head was real heavy and she couldn’t get up on her own. If Paula Deen had been in that suit she could have got up because she took a 12-pound ham to the face and kept on her feet moving around. That’s the kind of player both these teams could use.

HeHateMe – I like all the smack talk, although some of it is just plain ignorant. Not ill-informed – ignorant.

There is a huge difference between Tech graduates and UGA graduates; not necessarily in intelligence or quality, or job prospects, etc.; all of those things are derived more from the individual’s capability and motivation than what the institution can imbue in them just by virtue of their attendance at a particular institution.

I can say that, almost without exception, every graduate of Ga Tech is proud of their degree, because of its quality AND what they went thru to get it. In my mind, that’s what Tech imprints on it’s graduates, and that’s why the degrees are coveted by students, and its graduates respected internationally – it’s the process, not the diploma.

And that’s the reason behind the attitude you see from Tech graduates – like Smith Barney, we’ve earned it.

Real Tech graduates do not define their lives by how well the football team does. That has always been an interesting side-light, more interesting some years than others. But it does not define us, and it never will.

UGA graduates, on the other hand, much more strongly identify themselves with the football program than anything else, having lost (or misplaced) your priorities and values regarding the role of higher education in society, and the student-athlete in particular.

So, live and die with the UGA program, hire and fire coaches, crucify plyers in the press – so you can vent your frustrations like children and perhaps feel a little more superior one day out of seven.

Please know that we don’t take ANY of you seriously – really, how can we?

It was one game. Georgia upset Florida two years ago by a huge margin, but that didn’t change the series momentum. Tech is having a great year, Georgia not so much. To paint it as this huge shift in power is simple minded and doesn’t consider the nuance and complexity that is college football. One game does nothing but add to your W/L column for that season. If for some reason Georgia is able to pull the upset, that won’t mean anything other than the Dawgs won.

5. There are a lot of division one schools that would love to be invited to a bowl to play – we just may have 2 on the same field Saturday – just enjoy the moment.

There were some intelligent Tech posters earlier but they went away and left all the idiots behind. To the Tech posters who think that they are a better cut of human than us UGA graduates, I will pray for you. To judge the worth of people based on where they chose to further their education is reminiscent of judging people based on the color of their skin. It’s sickening and it’s this continuing mentality that will always make Tech second in the hearts of a mass number of Georgian’s who never attended either school. So you have a decent football team this year. So what, your arrogance is truly disgusting! Vulgar Vesparis indeed!

One thing we can all agree with…

The best football is played in the South. Not only are the ACC and SEC numbers one and two respectively in numbers of players selected in the 2009 NFL draft, but, according to a Sports Illustrated analysis of football scholarships awarded by BCS schools for the years 2004-2008, the breakdown of scholarships per capita by states was as follows:

1) Florida
2) Alabama
3) Mississippi
4) Georgia
5) Louisiana
6) The rest of the country

Nice little stats to drop when the da** yankees and left=coasters start yammering about Penn State, Southern Cal, Ohio State, Boise State, Cincinatti, Oregon, blah, blah, blah…

Those teams the ESPN people love so much would be lucky to go 4 and three in conference if they played ACC/SEC teams.

I had a tech tag ripped from my car and it keyed in a funeral home parking lot..I will never be silent again, and if “I’d love for one of you ” thinks I wouldn’t stand up to any of them he is sadly mistaken. Cuz – good post. I too hope that no one gets hurt. I’ll go further, and say that I hope the refs play no crucial role in this one. SEC used to have the ACC beat hands down when it came to the quality of officiating, but now I’m not so sure. Given the screwups we’ve seen this year (a major SNAFU on the celebration penalty called on UAG in the LSU game, the “phantom” personal foul call on the Ark. player, etc), I have little confidence in the SEC. As much as I hate to say it, I anticipate 2 -3 chop block calls on Tech, probably when JD runs the 70 yard dive. I should say “phantom” chop block calls to be precise. Also, if you’re UGA, must worry about potential personal fouls. So let’s say that balances out, no one gets hurt and both teams play hard. Which they will. I like our chances, and agree with MB that there is clearly a change in mindset with Tech, it no longer fears the Big Dawg, but will still respect it. And I think conquer it yet again.

ps. Shane’s comments are rather silly. I like the replies put out by the parent whose son is in Afghanistan. As the song goes, “and if I had a son sir, I tell you what he’d do … .” i.e., CPJ could yell at my son; it would toughen him up and prepare him for life. What more could a parent ask? Go Jackets!

Tech 75, we only define ourselves by the football program on Fall Saturdays. I’m sorry that we have more fun than you do. I think that’s really all it boils down to with bitter clowns like yourself. You weren’t invited to the party. So you build yourself up by tearing others down and pretending that you are better than them. Its a classic defense mechanism of losers and I see it over and over again out of bitter Techies. You are not better than anyone because you are an engineer. You are a typical crybaby jealous Techie. Tech could win by 100 on Saturday (and may very well) but that will never change. Tech fans like you are arrogant condescending scum.

You said it yourself anyway. Its more about the individual than the institution. Is it your position that UGA graduates are not proud of their degrees? Is it your position that they only use their degrees for football tickets? I think there may be a few lawyers, doctors, politicians, teachers, and CEOs that might take issue with that you ignorant dolt. Of course, I’m sure you think you’re better than all these people because you know calculus. We all know that’s the true measure of a man’s worth. What a myopic clown.

CLEMSON – Dabo Swinney suggested he prayed hard for Clemson to reach next week’s ACC championship game because of what it would mean to former coach Danny Ford, who will be honored there as the program’s designated “legend” this year.

If it meant that much to Ford, imagine the significance should the 15th-ranked Tigers reach the Orange Bowl, site of the 1981 postseason triumph that secured the national championship and cemented Ford as a program icon.

On the flip side, imagine how this season’s Atlantic Division title breakthrough could lose its luster if all Clemson has to show alongside it is a berth in the Music City Bowl

Mark…7 years ago UGA took GT down in Athens 51-7. It was at that point that CMR gained a hold over Gailey and this series. If CPJ lays one on the dawgs on Saturday the same could happen for Tech. I am a UGA grad, and I don’t like the way this one shapes up for UGA. I see some big plays available for Tech in the passing game. Willie hasn’t stopped any option attacks all year. GT’s option attack is probably the best in the country. It really comes down to Cox taking advantage of Tech’s pass defense, and Willie’s ability to get out of his comfort zone and call an aggressive game. So, UGA’s hopes rest on their two lowest performers, and GT’s chances rest on their top performers. Not good for UGA!

I liked the columns earlier this season after the loss to Miami – you remember, when Paul Johnson and his high school offense were over matched and he wasn’t going to last long in Div. I. A few consecutive wins and he’s the greatest coach to ever walk the earth. Enjoy it while you can, Paul Johnson, because it will only last until the next loss.

We saw the same treatment for Mark Richt. He went from the savior of a program to completely incompetent in less than a season. Jim Mora walked the same path (though his descent from the pedistal of greatness was probably well earned). Bobby Cox, one of the greatest managers of all time with the statistics to back it up, is now unfit to manage a game of freeze tag.

The biggest question for today: Who will be first to fall from favor in the local media – Paul Johnson or Mike Smith?

The four UGA grads also do more work than the Five Tech grads.Let’s see…who would most people rather hang with or have working for them? Constipated people who are lazy or happy people who work hard. You Tech fans are delusional…How many times a day do you pat yourself on the back, look in the mirror and tell yourself how great you are. What a pompous moron you are. Once again you’ve proven whats been stated on this blog before. Tech fans have an incredible inferiority complex towards Georgia.

I believe the toughness of schedule (SoS) you refer to was calculated at the beginning of the year. A lot of opponants that Tech has faced have been a lot better than expected at the start of the year. Also, what’s this 4 of 5 BCS bowls. UGA didn’t do that, but you expect Tech to, so they can compare with UGA. By the way, I guess Kentucky must be one of those really tough teams you speack of on UGA’s schedule. You make me laugh at your bogus comments. Just remember, Tech doesn’t have Chan Gailey or Reggie Ball to help out the MUTTS anymore. THWG!!!!!

Their are all kinds of polls to look at to make a case for many teams. UGA did play a tough schedule this year. It was one of it’s first in a long while. Maybe it was a bad year for that. By the way, we beat ya’ll last year when you had that starting QB, starting RB, starting DB, Starting DL, etc. What was the excuse last year? Those starting defensive players didn’t really impress anyone last year and no one this year. Keep living in the past because all those victories were many years ago. UGA fans need to get use to the parity in this state for years to come.

The first part of your post was legit. I agree that this talk is premature, and we’d be better off to wait a few years and then have this conversation, but then you started stating “facts” that were absolutely not true. The most widely respected measure of Strength of Schedule is Jeff Sagarin’s computer rating, and it just so happens that GT’s SoS is rated #12 in the nation(significantly better than any team ranked ahead of us) while UGA’s is #17…so before you post nonsense maybe you should learn how to check your “facts” first…fool

CFB Fan, what lame comments. I’ve got degrees from both schools. Engineering is really hard, much more difficult than any of the nonscience majors, i.e., liberal arts majors at UGA. Industrial Engineers are efficiency experts for industry – a far cry from janitors (not that I have anything against janitors). Other engineering majors are even more challenging. Most the of football players at UGA probably major in PE – that’s physical education, not Physics Enhanced (that’s a joke). We know what PE majors take – remember the Harrick exams? Tech doesn’t have a PE major or any other type of basketweaving course of study. At least when I went to Tech, all students had to take 2 quarters of business calculus (not engineering calculus, but no doubt a tad more difficult than a basketball course). All students. Not sure if this is still the case, but no one can really debate whether Tech, not having a true liberals arts college (where PE is generally housed) is more difficult than UGA. Of course, the real irony is exactly what UGA fans have been saying for years – what difference does this make to the game Saturday? The answer – none. Sooooooo, let’s play the game – skins v. shirts, reds v. golds, UGA v. Tech. Most likely, the best team will win. Usually does.

Give Richt some credit he didn’t have much to work with in the form of Joe Cox. Richt decided to let his 2 QB’s redshirt in hopes of them learning the system for next year. Caoch Paul got Josh to buy into the system last year early. Josh found he could run well and pitch when needed. All the Plays Josh ran were going well. Cox didn’t run good plays and bobo Didn’t help him with bad play calls. Joe never really had a good rhythem all year. Josh just keep getting better and doing better. When Stole the ball back from VT we all knew JOSH WAS A Bad A$$ WINNER. Joe ran his mouth in a press conference about fans. We knew then he was an EXCUSE MAKER.

8-3 (Miami, Va Tech, NC, Clemson)
6-5 FSU
5-6 Duke
4-7 WF
4-7 MSU
2-10 Vandy
Not to mention the cream puffs on your schedule.

Miami beat your stingers off

Clemson came early in the year with a true freshman QB and actually had the go ahead TD late in the 4thQuarter called back by penalty.

Not all football wisdom comes from ESPN and Rivals. There are other polls and rankings other than ESPN and Rivals. Would it of really mattered if UGA would of had a little easier schedule. They haven’t faired too well against their usual competition. Let’s not start talking about quality wins. UGA hasn’t put together hardly anything notable. All the quality teams they played they lost to. Don’t forget that one of UGA’s wins came against a true creampuff in Tenn. Tech. What a joke to think that performance had woken up UGA team to start playing better.

I not a ga fan because of the team or the coaches but because of most of the so called fans. This year could go either way. They do catch breaks, you’re right. They have tutors, study hall, usually really good word, etc. But – and this applies to both schools’ athletes – one thing they don’t have much of – is time. I really respect both programs; it’s very hard (especially in our current society which focuses on immediate gratification) to go to college, play football, work out constantly (especially in the “offseason”), stay out of trouble (some do not, see UT articles of the last week or so) and make the sacrifices others don’t have to, even though you have a grant-in-aid. This ignores injuries. Anyone that has had major joint surgery (for me, 4 knee operations, the latest a total knee replacement) know what a pain it is. And then to go back out, after re-hab, and take some more hits – not for the faint of heart – ask your tackle T.S. So is it harder at Tech than UGA? Yes, but it’s still a challenge at Georgia too.

Clean old-fashioned hate, that’s what they call it and that’s what it is. We don’t need no stinking axe, or little brown jug or any other “tool” to symbolize the hatred and enmity. Wish Saturday were here now.

Further, it seems like the refs won’t call it unless it affects the play, which is a really scary judgment call, or unless it’s so flagrant to be incredibly obvious.

As much as CPJ works the refs to avoid the chop-block penalties, we also should work them about the holding on Morgan….

the stupidity of your comment amazes me. You just asked me “How can Tech’s strength of schedule be # 12 when they have only played…” as if the stats i mentioned were something I made up myself…I’m not the one who decided those rankings, they are the accumulation of many educated football minds and computers that factor in the quality of teams’ competition and don’t even include margin of victory (which would really hurt UGA in any ranking)…so to answer your question:

How can Tech’s strength of schedule be # 12 when they have only played…?

Then “Adman” comes with “might of won” instead of “might have won.” And Shane’s refusal to use punctuation or decent grammar is a good thing since when he attempts it, it’s incorrect. And I thought uga (no, I will not capitalize it) was supposed to be a liberal arts school. Most of you would be unable to submit a passing essay in a 4th grade class. And speaking of class, that’s something else you lack.
Tech will run over the butt sniffing, parked car chasing, respitory challenged, bowlegged, bull puppies Saturday night, and leave them wishing they were, like their four legged mentor, DEAD. My only regret is that the game won’t be played up Hwy 78 amongst the weeds so we could bring home more twigs to start our yule fires with.

I need only read the first few comments to understand fans, alumni, and friends of Ugag. Their facts are distorted like their media guide. Their understanding of football is limited to Hershel, Buck, and the boys, or what they learned in one magical season from “run Lindsy run”. They bark, literally bark more than real DAWGS. Nothing is good enough. There is always an excuse, usually the Coach’s fault as opposed to lack of talent at the QB position and throughout most of the defense. “THE SEC”. Do these idiots not realize that the ACC is also mostly in the south, and the players representing both conferences are generally very comparable coming out of HS??

It’s like take your two or three, and we’ll take the next seven. I guess the people from Ugag either don’t have grandparents or don’t speak to them. As mine tell it, Tech rarely lost to Ugag and in fact did win eight in row, and still holds largest margin of victory.

Alpharettadawg and the rest of you that think that the recent past 15 months has no no bearing on what the future holds for these programs, you have been the ones that pointed to the last decade as what the future holds. I don’t understand how the dawg nation can look to the previous 7 years prior to last year and say they have any indication of what the future holds for these two programs.

Now I am not one that thinks that all of the sudden CMR has forgotten how to coach. He is still very young and dynamic. He still has many many good years ahead of him, but for uga fans to deny that CPJ has turned things around based on how things were before he ever came…just plain silly. CMR had better make some adjustments before next season. He needs to look no further than the “good book” that subscribes to understand that he needs to hold his coaches accountable. They have had more talent to work with than most any scool in the country except maybe USC. they had better produce or the limbs will be pruned.

I will say this, Georgia will always be the undisputed top football school in the state. Georgia owned Tech for the better part of a decade and Tech wins one game and we have to listen to this garbage. Kudos for Tech for a nice season, but even Tech alum and 680 the Fan personality Matt Chernoff admits that Georgia Tech can never pass Georgia in the state of Georgia. Georgia will always get better recruits, bring in the most money, and generate more interest than Georgia Tech. Georgia just signed a huge media contract which is the biggest in history dollars wise. Money talks and gimmick offenses walk over time.

Wade, how about GT’s record if it had played UF, LSU, USCe or even UT? Those teams have very good defenses (wish I could say the same for UGA) and would have given GT all they wanted. GT would be 8-3 now at best and you know it. GT is nowhere near a BCS championship – heck, Boise State, TCU and even Cinn are ahead of them at this point. The ACC is very weak and you know it. That will all be exposed in the bowl games this year. You’d best get ready for Clemson because I think they’re the better team.

Let me start by saying that I wish the best for UGAy. CMR is a fine man and a devout Christian. That is something that is lacking in Major sports these days. That being said, however, some things being said by the Dawg nation are really putting a craw in my saddle. Lets start with the great NFL talent Georgia puts on the field every year. Stafford has 42 million Moreno and Muhammad have money. ALL CAME OUT EARLY. That equals no Degree. But look at Stafford. Busted shoulder. Moreno; suspect knee What do they have to fall back on? Ten years from now when those dawg boys are out of football and delivering pizza (oh wait, no drivers license) or having to look at the nametag sewn to their shirt pocket to remember there name, most Tech GRADUATES will be making upwards of $100,000 yearly developing something that makes life easier or a drug to cure cancer. And lets not forget Michael Johnson and Vance Walker, oh yeah, and a receiver up in Detroit named Johnson (Who by the way, finished at GT early) Besides, the fact that Tech had few big names NFL picks should humble UGAy even more. We beat you with inferior players. Given the choice of talent or Heart, I’ll take heart ANYDAY! I’ll take Dwyer over Moreno or Ealy, Thomas over Green, and Paul Johnson over Mark Richt. Tech very rarely will land the 5 star recruits. Truth is most 5 stars can’t get into Tech. And of those that can, and are somewhat assured of an NFL career, how many really want to make the sacrifice it takes to be a student at Tech. I’m just sayin’. Besides, this sets up perfect for you dog breaths. Derreck Dooley is doing damn fine at La. Tech. Dad can hire him as soon as Richt is gone. Bring on Herschal, Jr and Buckie Baleu

Unless you’re Florida, you’re not going to win the NC every other year, so let’s not make it all about winning or losing. It’s been 20 and 30 years since Tech and UGA (respectively) have won the NC. Up here where I am now, I’ve discovered a coffee club among the coaches. The regulars are Bear Bryant, Lombardi, Landry, Bud Grant….to name a few. They have definite opinions…such as the fact that Barbara Dooley would have kicked more a## than Vince did, which is a joke that only mascots like me would perhaps get, but I digress…

More to the point….they all compare Paul Johnson to a middle-age Bear Bryant. Thought you earth-bound boys would like to know.

Smart people make money no matter what college they go to or what degree they get. … I know plenty of unemployed Tech graduates right now, but that really has nothing to do with football now does it?

Techie on the Coast … you’ve clearly shown that you don’t get it. 12-0 AND National Champs? Now, you might go 12-0 at some point, but the ACC is low rent in the BCS pecking order — right down there with the Big East. Is a 12-0 Cincinnati going to get a shot at the title? Nope. Not even a 12-0 Iowa would’ve gotten a shot. It’s the Big 12 and the SEC … and then the ACC is down near the bottom with the Big East. Heck, you can’t even leapfrog Boise State and their one impressive win (though much more impressive than any win Tech has).

So, go to sleep with dreams of 12-0 in your head, but it’s best that you lose one or two so you don’t have to wake up to the nightmare that is the BCS and how it’s rigged for only two conferences.

Shane: Georgia didn’t win during the war years you mention because Georgia players were fighting the war and Tech’s stayed home. In fact, the day after Pearl Harbor, the WHOLE Tech team volunteered for service. Clint Castleberry subsequently died during the conflict. Let’s not take that glory away from those fellows in a stupid blog. Actually, I understand Tech probably won those two years because they were a training location for soldiers and consequently had a source of talent perhaps not available to Georgia. I’m not sure how true that is.

Mark, I’d say you’re really enjoying stirring the pot. It’s not the most dignified form of journalism, but it is a welcome diversion in this era of uncertainty.

There is a lot of merit to your points, but that definitely doesn’t translate into overconfidence for this Tech fan. I’m cautiously optimistic about Saturday night. These Dawgs still possess some dangerous weapons and a break or two either way could make a huge difference. Last year, Tech got a few very pivotal ones at the most opportune times last year, i.e Samuel’s kick off fumble. To Tech’s credit they pounded away when they had the Dawgs on the ropes and that was the difference.

I will agree with your basic premises. CPJ has changed the mindset at Tech. Some interpret that as “cocksure” or even arrogance, but CPJ is just a very confident competitor, who absolutely hates the idea of losing. Tech’s previous HC (and AD I might add) seemed resigned to it to a certain degree.

CPJ places a lot of stock in common sense, execution, the value of TEAM, and what Erk used to call “a bad case of the wants”. He won’t excuse failure, especially when lack of concentration or execution is the problem. At Tech, oldschool is cool….and winning !

The only sound I heard was their cleats on the concrete as they made their walk back to the locker room. They were whipped–dragging a$$ is more like it. VT-UF – UF is better
Clemson-LSU – push, both are 8-3, both are top 20
Miami-Ok St – push, both are in top 20
UNC-Arkansas – UNC is better, one more win and UNC is top 25
The next five on each schedule (FSU, MSU, Wake, UVA, Duke for Tech and Auburn, Kentucky, Tenn, USCe, Ariz St for Georgia) is a push. All teams are sitting around 4-7 wins, none are ranked, all are around 30-70 in the Sagarin ratings, the definition of mediocre
Vandy-Vandy – push
Jacksonville St-Tenn Tech – JSU is much better, 8-3 vs. 6-5 and 60+ spots higher in the Sagarin.

Georgia played a top 5 team and 2 other BCS ranked teams.
Tech played 4 BCS ranked teams, none in the top 5, but one more than Georgia.
Both played 3 in the top 20.
Both played 5 mediocre teams.
Both played 2 bad teams.
Georgia’s cupcake is much worse than Tech’s.

All in all, pretty even strength of schedule.

CFB Fan – The big difference this year, even with an even SOS?

Both beat their cupcake.
Both beat Vandy.
Tech was 5-0 against their mediocre teams,
Georgia was 3-2 against their mediocre teams.
Tech has 3 wins against ranked teams,
Georgia has 0.

Well the game is in 3 days…..everybody will soon find out what’s what.

Amen to that one…one thing about Tech having the week off, is that the crap talking started a week early. UGA is very talented, and if they can quit making stupid errors, we will have a game, if they have stupid turnovers and stupid penalties, it could get ugly

Its interesting how those UGA fans don’t count the losses during WWII but do count their wins from those seasons in their total statistics….

Is the Tech game big to Georgia? How big. Let’s see–I believe there are four retired Jerseys in the Bulldog trophy case, Three of them are Frankie Sinkwich, Charlie Trippi and Herschel Walker. Almost any fan knows about these three although it has been a long time since the first two were were active.
Who is the fourth. What did he do to earn such recognition? How about Theron Sapp, a nice player but probably not in the same class as the others. What did he do? Why he was the “Man who broke the Drought.”
The facts stated here have not been authenticated, but I believe they are accurate. If not a correction would be appreciated.

Cuz says – “What has truly changed? To be sure, Coach Johnson seems to have changed an abject mindset of failure at Georgia Tech. To imply that Georgia’s poor season this year (and, by unspoken implication, future seasons) is directly related to one GT victory requires a leap in logic too large to contemplate seriously”

Are you trying to sound smart using as many fancy words you can think of or did you just discover the “synonyms” function on Word? This ramble is pretty awkward…

I very sad the Jellow Jacket lose to Russ the Bulldog. Why do the Coach Johnson try to throw the ball when running working? I so angry I could punch a camel.
