A very short post about a very big topic – UGA’s coaching

Willie Martinez does some coaching. (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)

Here's Willie Martinez, seen doing some actual coaching. (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)

Shortest post ever. Three simple questions:

1. Which team has better players — Georgia or Kentucky?

2. Which team won the game?

3. What does that say about the losing coaches?

There it is. Have at it.

Jack Bull,

Thank you for bringing up my good friend Mr. Pete Carroll. He is taking lumps this year because he saw the long-term advantage of starting the bext quarterback, regardless of their age.

He’s got a true freshman in there at qb. I promise you, USC will be in a BSC bowl before Georgia gets back to one.

Best in the business? Hell, right now, he ain’t the best in the state!
10 wins with a chance to win the SEC?? lets look at what it takes to win the SEC and be a national powerhouse. You’ve got to win the big games. Not just one big game a year, you’ve got to win them all. Tennessee, Florida, Auburn, all the big games.

What’s the dogs recent record in big games?
When was the last time they won a big game? florida 2007

IT goes back to how we lose, not the losses ( we are not competitve in losses such as UA and UF). It is also how we win. How continue to struggle and play down to the level of competition.

GO DAWGS!!! bottom line, turnovers lost this game, nothing more, nothing less….

sorry spelling police, but i do know how to spell,,,legit, just mis-typed, but i guess you’ve never made a mistake before, huh?? except for pulling for the dawgs. some of you really need to go pull for UF or UA.

i’m just saying, don’t run off the best we’ve had in a very long time, you’ll regret it..

Here’s a fact: Only one Bulldog coach in history coached teams to win 3 of 4 games in which they played–and it wasn’t Vince Dooley or Wally Butts. Is it possible that Mark Richt has forgotten how to coach in a season and a half? Doubtful. I think the problem lies with the fact that so many fans don’t want a University of Georgia football team; they want an NFL prep team (without the NFL paying for it, I might add). As a result, they more or less demand that the school recruit players highly ranked by the recruiting services. Those players can play anywhere and go to the school they think will get them to “the next level.” They don’t bleed Georgia; they don’t really care that much about Georgia. They’re a little more selfish than the lesser ranked recruits. They probably aren’t any harder to coach than others, but I bet they’re harder to motivate. Why should a player put his future on the line for a college game when they’re looking at the big pay day at the end of it all? Perhaps, the UGA staff would be better off with recruits of slightly lesser ability who really want to be in Athens rather than superstars who want to be in the NFL.

An awful lot of Cox bashing on this thread. Hey, if we have this kid as QB at UK for the game Saturday, we win it by 20+. That first pick, our tackle (well blocked) just happened to pivot at the right time. And Cox did NOT cause the goal line fumble. The 2nd pick you have to credit to our LB AND COACHING ADJUSTMENT — that same play was a huge gainer for UGA in the first half.

What should concern Dawg fans is not that the team was ill-prepared for the game or did not execute well (20-6 @ the end of the 1H argues against that) but that the coaching staff reaction scheming in 2H was ineffective, relative to UK’s. You know who adjusts better than Rich Brooks’ staff? — Paul Johnson’s. And although the UGA ‘D’ between the tackles is pretty stout, UK had success on the edge (and, uhm, option 3 in the Tech run attack sort of goes there). On the other hand, Tech’s lack of secondary speed is a gift for Cox — and oh so vulnerable to UGA’s mix of under/crossing and vertical pass routes. Never mind that UGA CAN RUN against Tech.

Says here it’s another 80+ point game…

jack bull-Bob Stoops and Pete Carroll have national championships in their resume’. That shows that it’s just an off year for them. I do not agree with those that say we should fire CMR yet, he’s certainly earned a chance, but if this off season doesn’t bring abou some serious positive changes he should resign, be fired, whatever.

LOL. Reshad Jones in the Pro Bowl. My God. What planet are you people on? This guy has the worst instincts of any safety I have ever seen. The same guy that was coaching Sean Jones, Thomas Davis, and Greg Blue is currently coaching Reshad Jones: Willie Martinez. Did Willie Martinez get hit in the head and forget how to coach safeties or was Reshad Jones an overrated prospect that couldn’t hold the aforementioned players’ jock straps? Logic says the latter.

UGA fans are out to lunch about all the talent we supposedly have. It simply isn’t there. Get real.

Bob, Actually CWM has forgotten to coach the DBs as a whole. He is to caught up trying to be a DC and gameplan there. As you can see, he can’t walk and chew gum at the same time. And I do think Jones will be a good pro football player. He will have good coaching once he gets there.

We still stand a chance to beat Tech. I believe this because we are okay against the run. We dominated Uk, Auburn when they tried to run against us. But then they found they they could complete a pass on us and it was over. Auburn coaches just didn’t get it early enough.

MARK RICHT said it was Joe Cox’s turn to be QB. Is that how a coach determines the best player at QB. Maybe this type of attitude sets up inadequated players like Joe Cox for failure.

gadawg, I would love to believe you, but as good as UGA has been against the run… We have been killed on option and mis direction. The Spread option has killed us. UKs run suceess was in the spread option or wild cat. UGA does not play discplined football. There is noway we stop the triple option. I say Nesbit and Dwyer get us for a 100 each. Girst play of the game will most likely be Nesbit play action on the dive play with Dwyer and hitting Thomas deep with a 50 yarder. Why? The play action will have both Jones and Evans running to the line of scrimmage. Not enough discplined play by the defense. That will open up the run for the rest of the day.

The UGA players may be higher rated recruits (i.e., more athletically gifted), but they don’t play as a team. I see a bunch of ‘individuals’ putting in their three years so they can go to the League.

This is not everyone, but most go through the motions, waiting for their individual moment. Then, when it comes, they beat on their chest, saying “Look at me!”

There is no synergy from 11 guys united for one cause. Alas, the coaching staff is responsible for getting talented players to play together as a team and not for themselves.

To the people who asked why Orson Charles didn’t get the ball in the 2nd half- Did you consider that Kentucky may have made adjustments and kept him covered?

Why does Evans always start? Maybe he’s the best we’ve got at his position? Think about that?

Why not start someone other than Cox? The other guys aren’t quite ready yet.

The answers to the questions put up by some posters are so simple, but people are so upset over a game played by 18-22-year old kids that they can’t see it. To boo thses kids and walk out of the stadium before the game is over just shows that people’s priorities are way out of line.

Jason- i totally agree- i did say chance :) Last year in the first half we played the option very well because they stayed with their assignments. the second half is when they broke the long runs because the defense left their assigments-again discipline. the UGA players also are not focused and are just going through the motions- certainly a sad state of affairs.

Next year is going to worse. UGA losses their 3 best Defensive players (Owens, Atkins, and Weston). The QB situation will be even worse; no QB will have any real game experience. Richts’ loyalty to his coaches and players may be good at times. But to me there is a difference between being loyal and stubborn. Mark Richt be loyal to the University that pays you and the fans……….not your friend(s) that are in over their heads………or you might have a lot of free time to be loyal together as you look for a new job.

Heck running the ball up the middle ain’t cute enough, come on man! We are the same team that runs between the tackles between the 20’s and then decides we need to throw it 3 straight times
