A very short post about a very big topic – UGA’s coaching

Willie Martinez does some coaching. (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)

Here's Willie Martinez, seen doing some actual coaching. (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)

Shortest post ever. Three simple questions:

1. Which team has better players — Georgia or Kentucky?

2. Which team won the game?

3. What does that say about the losing coaches?

There it is. Have at it.

Just because Kevin Butler, who I went to school with and is a great guy, doesn’t think WM is the problem doesn’t mean he is right. I may not be a weather forecaster but I can tell when a storm is coming.

From Tim Tucker’s article:

Saturday’s loss hurt Georgia’s bowl options, shelving Tampa’s Outback Bowl as a realistic possibility.

Of the SEC’s 10 bowl-eligible teams, seven have better overall records than Georgia’s 6-5. The Dogs could be looking at a postseason game near the bottom of the SEC pecking order, such as the Independence Bowl in Shreveport or the Papajohn’s.com Bowl in Birmingham.

“I’m not sure where, but I can promise you we will be thankful anywhere we get to go,” Richt said.

So we get to go to the Armpit Bowl of the South and Richt is ‘Thankful’. That just damages my Georgia pride to hear that. He should have said that he would not subject his team to the embarrassment of being in an Armpit Bowl and that he will elect to just not go to a bowl if we cannot be proud of the one we go to. His admitting that he will be ‘Thankful’ to go to Shreveport is just finally admitting to how awful this team is this year. Oh the humiliation! A stake in my heart!

And, one other thought. Why can’t we have our fans parked in their seats for the WHOLE game? Like I said, through thick and thin. If you’re a player that’s what you want to see. I’m sure the players noticed the mass exodus on Saturday. Do these fans honestly think that this would motivate the players? I mean honestly folks, that was more embarassing as an alum than anything the players or coaches have done this year. Be a fan and support your team!

No doubt coaching is the problem. But, Bobo is a big an issue as Martinez. Orson Charles has a career first quarter, then we quit using him? We run a draw play on third and ten with two minutes left in the game on Kentucky’s 30 yard line? Give me a break! An Offensive Coordinator’s FIRST job should not be at UGA! He is a QB coach, Martinez is a cheerleader!

finally an intelligent dawg post. i realize that we have our homers too but your fellow pups talking about blowing us out is great motivation for our team and fans. we will savor the win even more and be more likely to remind those very same homers of how foolish they were if we win. i think this will be a close game with leads from both sides. i think tech is the better team and i agree with the post above that the best teams usually win in rivalries. but we play the games because anything can happen – like kentucky for example.

For the UGA fan that says the next 6-8 weeks are critical as Urban may be at ND and UF will be replacing it’s QB therefore the SEC east will be up for grabs next year:

1. Urban not going anywhere and is bringing in another outstanding recruiting class…perhaps his best yet.
2. When you see John Brantley (our backup QB) next year you will realize the UF QB position is in great hands.
3. SEC east is always up for grabs. My question is who will be UF’s competition…UT, USC, Kentucky…

I would say Georgia needs to concentrate on Georgia and not be worrying or wondering about other school’s situations.

If I’m a parent of a HS football player with bigtime potential being recruited by the poods, the question I’m asking myself is will my son be developed when he gets to Athens or not? Lately it’s been NOT.

Richt is taking on water. Once the SEC ship begins to list there is no way to right the ship. This is not the Mountain West. I’m suprised by his capsize. He seemed so bouyant, really water tight. The Richt era has become “dingy.” Man overboard.

My question: If we are really shaking things up after the season, then where are we going? Mickey Andrews as DC? Ralph Friedgen as OC? We have some truly great freshmen and for all I can see the biggest obstacle we face next year is replacing Atkins, Owens and Weston.

We are over-reacting. Kentucky has SEC talent. The defense did not lose that game.

It is one off year for the coaches. Don’t you think they know where the issues are?

Tech is #7, but they run a HS offense and do not have SEC-level athletes. No worries!

Ans. Head Coach – Leave Richt in place or hire Spurrier, OC – Richt calls the O Plays like he used to and is best at or hire Weiss, DC – Tubberville.

Here’s the first thing that needs to be done and it’s very simple: take Richt’s Xanax away from him and flush it down the toilet. He’s w-a-a-a-a-y too mellow on the sidelines.

If Richt were smart, he would turn down any bowl invitation(it would on be the Independence or Papa John Bowl), fire his entire staff and spend his time getting the best coaches available. He also needs to spend time with his committed recruits, he very well could see many change their minds about Georgia. Mark when you’re in a hole, stop digging and “finish the drill” next year with some good coaches.

Hey Biggest [homer] Dawg

That “high school offense” beat a better poodle team last year when we hardly knew how to run the option. That’s not the case this year. SEC level athletes you say? I suppose UGA, Miss State and Vandy are not in the SEC? We’ve beaten all three teams in the past year. You might want to get more of those SEC level athletes if you want to win this year (or next).

Inhale, please?

Not a single coach threw an interception, fumbled a kickoff, missed a tackle, all those are physical plays that the players themselves should get the credit or blame for, whichever applies. The coaches are responsible for the poor kickoffs because of the philosophy they have which never seems to work. We never seem to have players sprinting down the field and breaking up the wedge – it seems like they are told to always stay in control and I believe that takes away from aggressiveness. Special teams play was poor in this game to say the least – I believe that is the area that needs the most attention in the off-season and cries out for a coaching change.

I have not heard Mark Richt say one time: “It falls on me!” Shame on you Mark Richt! Your ego precedes your spiritual well-being! You know and we know that this year’s demise falls squarely on you!! You make the $3-4 million bucks to win…not give us moral victories! And speaking of “moral victories”…how bout them personal fouls and penalties! Doesnt look like a group of young men that have been taught good Christian values such as respect, discipline, and self-pride! Evans is a perfect example of what I don’t want my children to try to grow up to be! Please sit him on the sidelines with a comb and sissors for the GA Tech game! He doesnt deserve to wear the uniform that comes with playing on Saturdays! And lastly, I beg you…please don’t where any uniform gimmicks against GA Tech! Instead coach your players up with words like team work, discipline, self-pride, and respect!!! I stayed with you all season…but the Kentucky loss is the “poster-child” of why 2009 went severely wrong!

You losers that want to blame it on the players are IDIOTS. In the NFL, where the coach usually is not the GM, you can make that argument. Not in college.

Saban’s players don’t seem to have the trouble Richt’s do.
Meyer’s players don’t seem to have the trouble Richt’s do.
Kiffin’s players don’t seem to have the trouble Richt’s do.
Miles’s players don’t seem to have the trouble Richt’s do.
P.Johnson’s players don’t seem to have the trouble Richt’s do.
TCU, Cincy, Boise State’s players don’t seem to have the trouble Richt’s do.

Why do Richt’s players commit a lot of turnovers and penalties and have a porous defense? Why Richt’s and not all those other coaches?

Blame it on the players? NO. FIRE MARK RICHT.

Adam – thanks for some realistic posting. I won’t diss you as a sincere dawg fan – we just wish there were more like you. Yes, UGA has always had a problem with obnoxious fans (yes we have them too – St Simons will be on here eventually) and part of the animosity of our team fans and other SEC fans toward your program are your fans more so than your team. So kudos to you for calling out some of your fellow fans.

I hear waht you are saying…but the coaches are not out there committing all the ridiculous turnovers. Cox lost this game for us. he is horrible and we need to rip the red shirt off Aaron Murray. The coaches preach turnover margin all the time, but ultimately it is up to the players to not give the ball away in the ridiculous ways they did. Can you really blame our coaching staff for those 2 picks or fumbles? thats the better question. These 4 and 5 star recruits need to have some accountability to.

Just a few things to be thankful for.
1. Thankful we don’t have to face Florida but once this season.
2 Thankful we don’t have to face Alabama or Ole Miss at all this season.
3. Thankful that we have the best Kickers in the Nation and at the end of the season awards will come rolling in for Walsh and Butler, they desreve it.
4. Thankful that Ga Tech game is in Atlanta this season ( for obvious reasons)
5. Thankful I got to watch Rennie Curran play his last game as a Bulldawg,

One more thing. The Mark Richt show with Chuck Doodle is USELESS. What a mighty fall that show has taken in the 10 years since I last watched it. Richt was barely conscious, hardly showed a pulse as usual, but he did comment 3-4 times about the second half kickoff. So they show the highlights and don’t show the one play Richt thought was pivotal. Further, no coaching comment on the plays. How absurd is that? Finally, NO COMMENTS ON THE CRITICAL FUMBLE AT THE 1-YARD LINE!!! Are you kidding me? What was QB thinking? What was RB thinking? Who blew it? Whose great idea was it to run a toss play anyway? And finally, WHERE IS THE COACHING, THE REPETITION IN PRACTICE, THE DRILLS, THE ABSOLUTE DISCIPLINE, THAT SHOULD KEEP THAT PLAY FROM HAPPENING???

As a gator, I have no dog in this fight, but I do firmly believe that UGA has superb talent on their team. It is more fun for me as a fan to play and beat the Dawgs when they are top SEC contenders. The current episode in Athens reminds me of the dark days we Gators suffered through in Gainesville during the Zook years and the ’70s and ’80s. It is not for me to pontificate on the problems with the Dawgs, but I am totally convinced that you will be back with a vengeance in the very near future. My many Dawg Fan friends are so remorse these days that we refrain from our good nature ribbing about football. I know how you feel, and you your loyalty does not deserve the current situation. You know, I agree the defense looks lost in the secondary, and how can you let a non starting qb, and there two best player make us look silly in the second half. However, you cant blame it completely on coaching when you fumble the kickoff on the ga 14, qb looking like a deer in headlights and just throwing two int and giving the ball inside the 15 again, and the fumble on the 2 yard line was rediculus, qb are supose to look at the line up before snapping the ball to make sure everything is all right, he should have readjusted ealy if he was to close. The main problem this year besides martinez and bobo are that we are young and very inexperienced at the important positions, qb, rb,wr. there is hope dog nation with the young talent coming up. but next season starts today, we got to make changes!
