East Rutherford, N.J. — The Falcons lost a game but saved a season. If that sounds convoluted … well, try this: On the day the Falcons fell to 5-5, they nonetheless demonstrated why this will be that forever-sought second consecutive winning season.
Or this: The Falcons lost a game but found a quarterback.
The first half was wretched. It ended with the Falcons down 17-7 but was far more distressing than that. The defense was awful, which we’ve come to expect, and Matt Ryan was just as bad, which has become a recent phenomenon. But in the second half things changed: The defense was still bad, but the Iceman again, er, cameth.
Ryan in the first half: Six completions in 11 attempts with a long gain of 18 yards, two sacks, one fumble. Ryan in the second: Twenty completions in 35 attempts, two touchdowns, no turnovers, no sacks. The first half he looked like a rookie, and this is the guy who never looked like a rookie when he was one. The second half he looked like a pro.
Said Tony Gonzalez, who caught seven second-half passes including the overtime-inducing touchdown with 28 seconds left in regulation: “There’s definitely some confidence to be taken from this.” And then: “It’s just unfortunate we couldn’t have gotten the ball [to start OT]. ”
Well, yes. The Falcons lost the coin toss — for the second time Sunday, Ryan called “tails”; he was 0-for-2 on coin tosses — and never touched the ball again except when Michael Koenen’s toe met leather. The Giants moved expeditiously, as you figured they would. (New York gained 456 yards on the day, 384 on Eli Manning’s passes.) And that was that. Game effort in a big game but ultimately a loss.
But not totally a loss. At halftime it was possible to see the Falcons as a a team going way wrong. They’d lost three of four after starting 4-1, and now they were playing as if overmatched and overwhelmed. Even with a kind schedule the rest of the way, there was no guarantee this team playing this way would break .500, let alone slide into the playoffs.
The second half, however, made us rethink. This defense won’t ever be anything of substance, but this offense still has that potential. The Falcons won’t play a better defense than New York’s, and at some point Michael Turner will return.
Matt Ryan returned Sunday. He played scared in the first half. Nobody associated with the Falcons would admit as much, but there seemed no other explanation. Having thrown 10 interceptions over the past five games, he was unwilling to risk throwing anything chancy, anything deep. The result was an offense that dared little and still yielded a turnover when Ryan held it too long.
The second half was a transformation. Said Roddy White: “We knew we had to go out and score. And we were on the field so long the defense got tired.”
These were the Falcons’ second-half possession: Touchdown, field goal, touchdown, touchdown — all on drives of 63 yards or longer. Ryan was again letting it fly, stepping into the teeth of the mighty Giant rush. Said Gonzalez: “We were on a roll. We moved the ball up and down the field.”
If this season is to be saved, the offense must do the saving. On Sunday the offense surged from 14 points back to force a fifth quarter. And that offense playing that way can still hoist this team to 10-6 and a wild card.
Said Ryan: “As a quarterback, you have to continue to play the way you’re supposed to play.” His perseverance bore fruit Sunday. He fought through the first downturn of his NFL career and nearly conjured up an astonishing victory.
He’ll be fine now. His team — the offensive part, anyway — will be fine, too. “There are no moral victories,” Ryan said, but on this he was wrong.

Nice to see the ol’ Bradley spin come out after a loss. I agree with you, though. Ryan threw the ball like a man late in the game. If he can do that the next three weeks, maybe we win two out of three and find ourselves in really good shape for, if nothing else, that elusive second consecutive winning season. I want the playoffs, but I know this team has many flaws. 9-7 would be acceptable to me.

If you’re Mike Smith, why not go for two at the end? There’s less than a minute remaining in the game, you have a very shaky defense and you’re on the road. At that point, you’re basically just hoping you win the coin toss to start OT.

I like the way our offense hung in there!! If Ryan can keep playing like that the rest of the year we may have a chance to finish with a winning record. The defense is basically set for the rest of the year. No need to get upset about the way the play because that is the talent we are stuck with. It would be nice if the secondary coach could teach the guys to turn around and look for the ball in the air!!!

So what was the deal in the first half? Matt had no confidence? Receivers not getting open? Bad play calling?
Secondly, if we don’t fix the CB position, we’re going to get burned all season. What is it with the Falcons and a weak secondary? That’s got to change.

I hate how OT works. This team is still disciplined and plays hard (unlike my dang Dawgs). Heartbreaker…but im so optimisitc about this teams future. Anyone who thinks otherwise are just bandwagoners with no soul
But, can Chris Houston and Brent Grimes PLEASE learn to turn around? Houston tried to undress that guy and got a pass interference, when all he had to do was turn and he would have had a pick!!
the secondary needs some serious work before we are going to be a playoff threat!! either coach em up, or go shopping.

They are better than most of what we’ve seen in recent years so let’s give them a boost for a change. Consider also they played a seasoned, successful team today and come out well – absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. They are still pulling together and building and that’s what counts. we are all disappointed by this loss, and the seemingly inevitability of finding ourselves without the glorious back to back winning seasons. Ryan really got it going in the 4th quarter, and hopefully he will carry this performance over into next week. Jason Elam, for whatever reasons is still having issues with his rhythm, and he is leaving precious points on the field….the last few weeks could have turned out a lot differently had we cashed in on the field goals that he missed. The defense, as unreliable as they were in the overtime, actually came up big with the stops in the 4th quarter to give the offense a chance to tie the game. I am more frustated with the rules of the NFL more than anything………basketball puts 5 extra minutes on the clock for OT…..baseball allows both teams half of their inning to score…..but the NFL says first one to score wins the game???? Hec’ even college football which has it all wrong with the BCS, gets it right when it comes to overtime. Maybe the fans around the league should finally start a petition to correct this???? My name will be the first on the list.

Maybe you can slip Thomas Dimitroff the phone number of on the most accurate kickers in NCAA history Monday morning?
Yes, I’m talking about Brandon Coutu.
He CAN’T be any worse than Elam right now.
Elam’s missed field goals are the difference between 7-3 and 5-5 right now.
At least bring in someone to compete to send a message.
And, BTW, your answer before, as to why Dimitroff never bothered to sign MacCallister didn’t make sense.
Yes, he signed Williams and drafted Hill.
But after Williams got hurt, he SHOULD have signed MacCallister.
There is NO way MacCallister would be worse than the horrible duo of Grimes and Houston.
Why he didn’t sign MacCallister is a huge question.

Matt Ryan did all he could to cover up for some of his teammates many mistakes (Elam’s chip shot field goal miss, Michael Jenkins dropped TD catch in the end zone, and Chris Houston getting abused by recievers yet again). We had an golden opportunity to gain some ground in the playoff race only to see it evaporate. Matt deserves better than this.

It will be very hard to win in the NFL with Ryan playing as scared and timid as he did in the first half. Add to that the fact Jenkins chokes frequently and you’ve got real problems. Then throw in Crisp Houston giving up guaranteed third down conversions each game with either a completion or pass interference and you’re really in trouble. Then throw in the fact that Grimes is physically overmatched on the outside and you pretty much have no chance.
Hopefully Ryan decides to play with some courage for 60 minutes from now on. But Elam, Jenkins and houston are beyond help.
Hey Schultzie, your’re closer to the situation than anyone here, so you tell us. Do you think the Falcons brass realize Chris Houston is a lower-tier DB and that his coverage technique (rarely turns head to make a play on the ball) is poor? Or do they think they have a gem in him? I ask because they always seem to try to get someone to play opposite Houston, but never to actually replae him.
Do the falcons think he is playing good football? Just curious.

“At the University of Georgia, he kicked three field goals of over 50 yards, his longest was 58 yards. He never missed a PAT at Georgia and was the first kicker in Georgia history to have over 80% field goal accuracy.”
“The Seahawks will keep only one kicker this season. But which one? Proven veteran Olindo Mare or promising second-year man Brandon Coutu?”
“He Remained on Seattle’s active roster all season, but was inactive all 16 games. Was a perfect 7-of-7 during the preseason, but could not win the job from Olindo Mare.”

VanGorder seems to have slowed a step, granted talent is younger and less experienced compared to last year. Today I felt like I watched a defense from Athens play on consecutive days, as continuously they got beat on similar plays. Kevin Boss was uncovered often, due to lack of adjustments. If this continues Id appreciate VanGorder to go back to his roots of successful Dawgs teams; although just a hopeless wish, the idea draws appeal.

Bugkiller- Ithink that you are on to something with Brandon Coutu, who is currently a free agent:
“At the University of Georgia, he kicked three field goals of over 50 yards, his longest was 58 yards. He never missed a PAT at Georgia and was the first kicker in Georgia history to have over 80% field goal accuracy.”
“The Seahawks will keep only one kicker this season. But which one? Proven veteran Olindo Mare or promising second-year man Brandon Coutu?”
“He Remained on Seattle’s active roster all season, but was inactive all 16 games. Was a perfect 7-of-7 during the preseason, but could not win the job from Olindo Mare.”
He is definately available.

Ok you folks are getting out of hand now. We need a real kicker not some guy who went to your alma mater. I already heard enough about UGA from DJ, we don’t need anymore bulldogs on this team.

Well said Mark, my thoughts exactly. That’s the kind of quarterback Matt Ryan has to be if he’s going to live up to his potential and if the Falcons are ever going to be anything. I get aggravated with seeing Ryan be so quick to scramble outside and throw the ball away. There are times for that, but most of the time a QB needs to step up in the pocket and try to make a play. This is the first time I’ve really seen him consistently step up in there and make the necessary throws down the field. There was no Michael Turner to fall back on this time, even though Snelling did a very nice job in his place. If only we had another receiving option (seriously … Roddy White is better suited as a No. 2 and Michael Jenkins can’t be relied on) and a couple of cornerbacks.

That’s the NFL “Sudden Death” for you. Whoever wins the coing toss wins the game. All you need is a first down or two and if you have a decent field goal kicker, it’s over. Both teams should have a shot at scoring. Not sour grapes. I’ve always felt that way. That’s why the NFL stinks. Go College Football!!!!

lol…….what am I missing about Bugkiller’s reference to giving Couto a shot, after a little internet research, it doesn’t appear to hurt to at least give hime a shot. And we are all calling for Elam’s head. It looks like Seattle let him go because they already had a proven vet in Mare, but I havent read anything negative about Couto’s abilities:
The Seattle Seahawks made a number of surprising moves Saturday to get down to the roster limit of 53.
Early in the day, word came that they had cut starting safety Brian Russell and signed 35-year-old safety Lawyer Milloy, who played for coach Jim Mora in Atlanta in 2006.
Adding to that stunner, the Seahawks then cut linebacker D.D. Lewis, a versatile backup who figured to be the fourth linebacker.
The team chose to keep veteran Olindo Mare over second-year kicker Brandon Coutu, obviously prizing Mare’s deep kickoffs over Coutu’s youth.

They was a big time kicker named Tim Mazzetti that caught on with the Falcons back in 1978, six games into the season and then he kicked real good for them. We was reading about it. He kicked 4 game winning field goals. He was 5 for 5 on Monday Night Football. A Clusters could do that.

Yeah, they did miss one. However Shankapotmus has missed three chip shots this year and one was buried because we won. He’s missed six field goals this year. Can’t do that with a defense that ranks in the lower tier. We scored 31 points. In the NFL you should have won with that if you are a playoff team.

Same old Falcons? Hardly. The same old Falcons would have folded in the second quarter (or after the second game). Before overtime, Matt Ryan and the offense generated 31 points. The defense gave up 31 points. There’s this year’s problem.
After the aberration of last year, this year’s team is dealing with a second-year QB, harder schedule (including teams coming off byes), corners who looked great last spring, but are permanently awful, a laundry list of critical injuries, and a kicker who lost his mojo. Their primary running back is out — and was “out while in” during most games this season. Norwood has been injured forever, and when he plays, falls down when touched. More work to do.
But the same old Falcons would have caved long ago. The Smiths would have hired and fired six coaches between pre-season and now, including the brother-in-law of somebody they met in an airport bar.
The same old Falcons’ motto was “wait ’til next year,” but you always knew next year would be just like every year. I don’t have that feeling about this bunch. Having been a Falcon fan since 1966, I don’t find “this year” so bad, and I’m looking forward to next year and a lot more.
I don’t think the Smiths really cared whether the team won or lost. They could afford to be patient forever, because it wasn’t patience for them — it was apathy. I think Arthur Blank has patience, but Blank wants to build a winner. I think he will. If others don’t agree, Blank will warmly welcome them back on the bandwagon in a couple of years.

Matt Ryan must have been doing foot work with marvin williams in the off season. this dude can’t scramble without falling flat on his face to save his life. Its a good thing its a football game. he reminds me of a white woman in a horror movie running for her life. This is the one spot
vick is really missed. His accuracy is horrible and he going to get the receivers killed, hurt or something. The o-line sucks in passing also. J. Snelling to be as big as he is is scared to lower his d. shoulders. He’s too soft. The offense makes the defense look horrible.

I hate the NFL OT rule. You can lose the game without ever putting your strogest unit on the field, so you lost by a coin toss. Today Atlanta’s well some of their offence deserved a chance. Until we get 2 quality receives that plays the full game. Matt Ryan’s hands are tied. Only TGcomes back for the ball, Jenkins is a wates of good money, and Roddy is on then he is off. But with what they had today they did ol TD will get Atlanta the players this I am sure of.

Well if we are going beyond the end of regular season, they have to make some type of major adjustment on defense. We struggle with any, our defense would make Pat Sullivan look good. There has to be major adjustments in the secondary. As for “shankapotamus”, good week of bring in kickers will correct that problem.

Jenkins dropped a pass. Ryan fumbled. Elam missed a kick.
But the Giants had eight penalties — to the Falcons’ three — and missed a field goal and Eli Manning threw an interception.
My point being: New York was the better team most of the day, and still the Falcons managed to get the game to overtime. That’s something to build on.

The way I see it: There are four should-wins left on the schedule: Buffalo, the Jets and the Tampa Bay games. That would put the Falcons at nine wins. Split the games with the Saints and the Eagles and that’s 10-6.

Wow. This article sounded like a Mark Richt press conference. Until Ryan can stand tall in the pocket, until our receivers can finish their routes and make plays downfield and until our secondary can cover ANYONE (This means just not running beside them but actually stopping them from catching the ball), this will not be a playoff team. Nor should it be. If the Falcons make the playoffs playing this type of football, it will be a poor reflection on the NFC.

10 Games into the season and “YOU” people are still making excuses for the quarterback
If Elam didn’t suffer from “Redzone Fever”, which means if he didn’t have to kick so many damn field goals, because the quarterback CHOKES in the redzone, he wouldn’t be so burnt out. His leg is exhausted
Whether you refuse to blame the CHOKE is not important and will not change the fact that he will be at grandmas for the holidays and breaking in New Years with a 2010 playbook
If you can’t blame the quarterback, then they should not be making all that money. Can you really blame a guy earning 1-2 million dollars, when the guy earning 72-million dollars is not doing his job.
Abraham asked for a new contract in the preseason and didn’t get one. It’s no accident that he is not playing inspired – he doesn’t plan on returning to the Falcons next season.
That 2010 2nd round pick to the Chiefs in conjunction with the 2 1st round picks this season that are damage goods, with the BUST qb, they will be starting from scratch and the Tony G. transaction will be a total waste because he is a short term fix and since there are no playoffs, he will retire next season or 2011 and that 2nd pick will be for not.
Dimitroff, Smith & the CHOKE will go down as the worst decision Blank has ever made – at least McKay, Mora & Vick made it to the championship game and that was in Mora’s 1st season.
It’s obvious, “YOU” people will not blame Ryan if he shot you in the foot, you would probably say, he didn’t know his gun was loaded.
Either way, there is no playoffs, so it really doesn’t matter who is responsible – NO PLAYOFFS

Again Sssssssssssssssssssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh now, you are waking sensible people!
When you stop spewing lies and innuendo, then come and try to take me on the little fella… Brandon Coutu could not directional kick at GA… And he did not endear himself to the ST coach or the Head Coach in Seattle. Therefore even when Mora threw Mare under the bus after game 2 this season (Video available on YouTube), the great Brandon Coutu sat/sits unemployed… When other teams across the league had injuries to kickers, he remained what? Unemployed!!! That is not negative, that is the truth… It hurts sometimes, deal with it…

I Can NOT Believe The B/S Hype About The Falcons Making The Play-Offs!!! It’s ALL Over The Air Ways And The Media Guru’s!! Ha,Ha,Ha,Ha,Ha,Ha,ha!!!! The Dam Birds Will Be LUCKY To W 3 More Games This Year..AND..NO 8-8 Team Goes To The Playoffs! I’ve Said It Before And I’ll Say It Again..The FAL-COONS Are 2-3 Years And 4-6 GOOD Players Away From The ELITE Of The NFL..
We Have NO Defense To Speak Of And Very LITTLE Offense..How Many Passes Does M.Jenkins Drop Before He’s Replaced?..Why Is O.Mulgivie Not Playing Running Back??
J.Abraham, The Beerman & The “DreadLock MoFo” Have NOT Been Heard From In A WHILE!!
Conclusion: No “Smoke & Mirror” Team EVER Goes To The Playoffs..They DON’T Deserve To Be There..You Got To Do The “Little Things” As A Team For 60 Minutes To Get There And The Falcons As A Team Are NOT Willing To Do That!
Has ANYONE Other Than Myself Noticed The “Drop Off” In R White’s Play Since He Signed The New Contract??..I For One Wish They Had DROPPED Him Off Last Year!! Tata

How many games did we play against teams coming off a BYE? We have just played 6 of 8 on the road against good teams. we haven’t lost at home and have won one road game. Losing Norwood for as long as we did really hurt. Obviously, losing Turner hurt. Bottom line is…we are still in it. We need to win 5 out of 6. I believe we will.

This is why the are called TROLLS.
Other reputable sites have no issue controlling their troll population.
All it takes is a FREE registration of a specific name to a specific IP.
That way, the guy who keeps on posting under various names, mostly as “Choke,” can be corralled and his trolling posts that have nothing of substance to offer, can be deleted.
Kind of like JSS, too. Nothing to offer of substance. Just being an a-hole for the express purpose of being negative.

Sorry, there is no positive spin you can put on a loss in the NFL when it’s a must win. This is a game the Falcons had to have and they blew it in the first half with yet another missed chip shot field goal and another turnover by Ryan. The Birds will finish 7-9 and will continue the curse of never having back to back winning seasons.

Even having lost four of five games, the Falcons are 16-10 with Ryan as their starting quarterback. This from a team that didn’t have a winning season in 2005, 2006 or 2007. Terrible decision to draft him, wasn’t it?

The falcon are done!!! 8-8 MAYBE!!! Lets face it, The GM did not do a good job picking DBs for this team. Mike Smith must not have any say -so when it comes to personnel; How can he allow this much poor play from the DBs? This is was a cost effective way to put a team together. Let me tell you, the falcons are not doing that well in the ticket revenue market at all!!! Thus, going young allows them to make an excuse for costing cost on the defence side. Believe me, if they had the resources they would have put a super bowl team together. The sad thing about this team is the fact that they do not have any sex appeal. Mike Vick sold tickets at lease!!!! In a tight economy, Sex appeal sells. The falcons need a real super star and a leader of men as well!! We need a impact player that will sell tickets and win games. I love Matt Ryan but he needs a game breaker WR that has heart and skills!! The defence needs two new OLBs one or two more pass rushers and two really good CBs. I am sorry but the best team IN THIS CITY with sex appeal is the ATLANTA HAWKS!!!!
Spend money Mr. Blank on this team or sell it now!!!!

The worst part about the trolls, is that they never want to use facts or the truth.
I seem to remember that when Vick was here, he NEVER got any of the blame until that last season, and only AFTER he flipped off the fans.
And even then, people like ME, were willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. “Lousy receivers, Greg Knapp, horrible o-line, etc, etc.”
Those are excuses we’d hear for five years with Vick.
Only after he was gone and JOEY HARRINGTON AND CHRIS REDMAN made Roddy White a 1,000 yard receiver, did we begin to question just how bad Vick was.
After Matt Ryan made White a pro bowler last year and turned Jenkins from a never was, into a sorta kinda is, the the TRUTH about just how bad Vick was really came out.
But, don’t let the TRUTH stand in the way of your racist hate, “Choke.”

The Falcons’ problem is defense. The secondary is horrendous. They must be near the bottom of the league in giving up big plays. Third and long is almost an automatic for the opposition. Given the state of the defense, it’s wishful thinking to believe the Falcons can win 5 of the last 6.

2) a gutsier, smarter performance by a Falcon QB as seen in 2nd half?
3) an ‘O guy’ like Snelling ever standin and stepup like that ?
4) enough evidence that the no huddle really works for this team ( and yes we know it speeds up the game but, duh, my stats show the offense actually stays on the field longer thus giving the ‘D’

Mark, I am not saying that we need to buy every good player like the Yankees. The falcons should have address the DBs situation. We all knew that this was the weakness on this team! Addressing the problem, with rookies will not help. I would have search for a trade or sign a free agent. The most important positions in football are the D-Line and secondary. The falcons did not address neither!! I love TG but we did not really need him!! Matt looks for him to much. We need to draft a TE next year and now we do not have a second round pick.
Nothing about this team is exciting!!! Sorry but the Hawks will win a championship before the Falcons. I rather spend my money watching a young and exciting team rather than a boring team,

I’m so frustrated, I couldn’t even read all of my fellow fans’ blogs before commenting. A couple of things.
NO WAY YOU CAN WIN WITH MISSED FIELD GOALS AND DROPPED TOUCHDOWN PASSES! No F#@#ING WAY!!!!!
With that said;
Is anyone else noticing that we are not doing what got us here?
A) No huddle offense (granted, they did under 2 min., but who doesn’t?)
B) Screen passes (even J. Snelling would rock this!)
C) Smash mouth football! (Why didn’t we send pressure on Eli in OT? Rushing 4 on the d-frontis not/ DID NOT/ get it done.
Matt looked good in the 2nd half, but come on. Let’s get some “consistent” play calling. No reason to go deep on 2 and 8. SLANT PATTERNS, SCREEN PASSES, ( I can’t believe I’m going to say it……..” DRAW PLAY”).
On Defense, we have one of the weakest secondarys in the league. Pressure up front always helps our secondary. DO NOT EVER LET UP! We were getting to Eli; Why stop???
Elam, I can’t even say it. …..Jenkins, you’re pathetic. Either own it every Sunday, or leave. We have other players that want to play. Use them. If the guys on the field are not producing, Bench them. C’mon!! We have talent. USE IT!!!

Feels better than last week, but…..it’s still a loss, and the deficiencies of this team (mostly on defense) have been exposed; it will be tough to beat any team with a competent passing game. TV guys are often way off the mark, but in this case Johnston & Siragusa were on right on; the defense not only looked physically overmatched, they also often appeared confused about what defense they were playing….and yeah, it would help if somebody coached these guys on how to TURN AND LOCATE the ball. I understand we can’t make these guys faster and taller, and many of the problems relate to the non-existent pass rush; but I’m starting to feel that perhaps the missing vets from last year were what were holding the D together, and perhaps BVG is overmatched…..I’d just like to see some progress.
Finally – is Owens so bad be still can’t get on the field despite the poor play of the regular CB’s ? If so, looks like TD’s second draft is as bad as his first was good.

Dear VICK SUPPORTER — From TMQ:
Stats of the Week No. 9:JaMarcus Russell, a quarterback taken first overall in the draft, has two touchdown passes, five lost fumbles and nine interceptions. Michael Vick, a quarterback taken first overall in the draft, has a total of 6 yards passing and a 39.6 passer rating. If every attempt by a quarterback falls to the ground incomplete, his rating is 39.6.

Quick Reality Check……4-1 to start, 1-4 since. 5-5 NOW. Only two (2) loses to give before back to back winning seasons is a distant memory.
Now, let me clarify..Ryan didn’t lose the game, Elam didn’t lose the game ( I have more faith in him correcting his mistakes than I do our piss poor secondary). The two guys that lost this game are BRENT GRIMES AND that GOD FORSAKEN CHRIS HOUSTON!!!!!!!!
Houston gets burned on a 52 yard pass, then gets ANOTHER pass interference call in the end zone. That was 7 easy points for the Giants. Plus, the drive before or after that, the secondary gave up a 3rd and 10, and another 15 yard gain, while their receivers were WIDE OPEN!!!!!!!!!!
If Grimes and Houston have jobs with the Falcons after this year, then I will seriously question/doubt the Falcons attitude for building a playoff/championship team-defense!
I’m sick of seeing week after week, our CB’s have the same issues. If they can’t be coached up and/or don’t have the naturally ability to play their positions, then get rid of their butts!!!!!!!

Elam, Houston, Jenkins, and the secondary coach need to go. These people are paid to produce. The secondary coach definitely needs to go. If one or two DB’s are not fundamentally sound, that’s one thing. ALL of them are lacking technique and a basic understanding of schemes. You can’t blame anyone but the secondary coach. He needs to go and make sure Chris Houston is with him. He has been given opportunity after opportunity. Elam is paid to kick. Let me back up. He is paid to make field goals. His attempts are basically gimmees in the NFL. Can’t do it- don’t let the door hit you on the way out. Michael Jenkins is paid to catch balls. He is no threat to any defense. CATCH THE BALL AND SEPERATE FROM DEFENSES. I am fully comitted to the TEAM. However, those who don’t produce should be held accountable for their actions. We still have a lot of football to play. Hear me out on this. I don’t think the missed kicks are Elam’s fault – they’re the holder’s (Koenen) fault.
The mechanics of a placekick are as follows (assuming a right-footed kicker):
The kicker shows the holder a spot on the field where he wants the ball to be placed. The holder places the index finger of his left hand on that spot and holds it there. The kicker then aligns himself behind and to the left of that spot.
Now, the kicker has to start his movement the moment the ball is snapped, otherwise he will be too late and the kick will likely be blocked. BUT, he cannot watch the center to see when the ball is snapped. He has to focus all his attention on the spot where the holder’s left index finger is – the spot where the ball is going to be. He has to very precisely aim his foot right through that spot. So, how does he know when the ball is snapped if he isn’t watching the center? The holder has to signal him. This is where Koenen has blown it two weeks in a row.
The holder, while marking the spot with his left index finger, will ball his right hand up into a fist and hold it about 2 1/2 feet above the spot. The moment the ball is snapped, he will open his right hand. This is the kicker’s signal to start his approach. The holder will then lift his left hand up and catch the ball with both hands (the kicker continues to stare at the spot while executing his approach). The holder then places the ball tip-first on the spot and spins the laces away from the kicker.
On two of the missed kicks in the last two weeks, Koenen has failed to ball his right hand into a fist and signal when the ball is snapped. This has thrown Elam completely out of his game. This is why you have seen Elam false-start a couple of times before he kicks those awful shanks. Placekicking is all about timing and Koenen destroys the timing when he does this. Any kicker would freak out under the circumstances.
I know Elam took responsibility last week, but I think he was being a gentleman.

I dislike sports writers who attempt to make pronouncements on careers and lives based on one crummy football game in November. There are no conclusions to be drawn about Matt Ryan after today’s game in New Jersey. Ryan is young with modest talents. He makes alot of mistakes and will get better. How much better? Who knows. One game is no determination of his NFL success or failure. Let’s revisit this issue in 12-months. Let’s make a pronouncement about the grandstanding owner instead. Blank on the sideline for the Fox cameras to capture is Bud Adams with a smaller prostate and a smaller middle finger. Four coaches, seven years, no back to back winning seasons. The guy deserves the same kind of story Mark. Afraid of this guy in Atlanta? Yep.

MAtt Ryan is and will always be a solid NFL QB. He has many things that he needs to work on, but guys there is some bad QB’s in this league. The defense is the weak spot on this team. Our opponents will continue to attack our horrible db’s and safties. Our defensive line disappeared today no pressure or sacks to even think of. This defense is plain out horrible! The offense will be ok. The kicker situation is horrible as well and with a horrible kicker and terrible defense, we are looking at 8-8 or 9-7 with no play-offs. Thomas Dimitroff will be judged on what he does with this pathetic defense in the off season. He needs to get some secondary help in the draft and acquire some free agents to help.

I have to disagree with those who keep calling out Emmitt Thomas, the secondary coach. He’s been doing this too long and produced too many All-Pros (not counting D-Hall) for it to be about coaching… Secondary play is coaching, technique, talent and confidence… Let’s look at each piece. Already mentioned coaching, the poor technique is related to players not trusting their talent or the pass rush (or a lack of one). I mean look at a All-Pro like Philly’s Samuel. he got straight beat, does that mean he is a bum? No, it was poor technique. This team needs to get healthy on D-Line especially at Tackle… You don’t make an interception like Grimes did and be a bum…

It was a horrible first half, but a brilliant second half for the offense. After last week’s loss, Matt Ryan said something to the effect of still learning on the job. I have no doubt today was a lesson – and a very positive one.
Ryan was drafted for the long term, not to work miracles in less than two full seasons. And all Falcons fans with a general understanding of the game and the team knew that there would be ups and downs for the defense this year, especially with the lack of experience.

Tough loss by our Falcons. Our CB are really hurting us, but two people I’m really impressed with on the defense are DeCoud and Lofton. DeCoud put a LICK on Brandon Jacobs!! As for the offense, I saw that we went deep a couple of times this game and had Sam Baker not been trying to block with his back to the defensive line, Ryan would have had the time to drop the pass behind coverage to Roddy White for a sure touchdown. Mr. Bradley..why not use Weems in the slot. I believe his speed would cause a lot of problems for defenses..especially on the 2nd/3rd and shorts.
If they don’t get the Collective Bargain Agreement together, next year will be an uncapped year so we can go out and pay for some decent players. And for the draft, there are some good RB’s coming out. I’m sorry Norwood, but we can’t run the risk of another season of 5-6 missed games due to injury. Hardesty out of UT if he is available later in the draft would be a good pick up. I’m not really seeing any big name corners in the draft.

OT format in the NFL should be as follows:
Each team gets one possession. After that, it is sudden death. If the team that wins the toss gets a field goal, and the team that doesn’t scores a TD, the TD scoring team wins. It’s the most fair. Guarantees both teams get to touch the ball, and also allows for the game to end without playing the full 15 minutes.

If you can’t see the potential in this guy, then you’ve obviously never laced em up before. Its obvious to all that he has struggled at times this year, but you’re fools for wanting to jump off the bandwagon this early.
Now as for the defense, we were idiots for not getting McCallister earlier in the season. Our DB’s can’t cover and the pass rash is non-existent. And I haven’t exactly seen the LB’s step of late either.(for all you Brooking haters) This defense is going to call for a drastic overhaul in the offseason.

I am a former cellmate of Mike Vick’s. We were together for but the briefest of moments in Leavenworth. But the time we spent together felt like a lifetime. I have never known a more caring and loving man in my life than Mike Vick, or Michael, as I prefer to call him.
If Michael flipped you people off, it was your fault. If receivers looked horrible when he was playing, then it was their fault. The Falcons could have waited for the man to serve his time in prison for what shouldn’t even be a crime, and then he could have returned gloriously this year with me by his side.
But instead, the Falcons betrayed my love by drafting that horrible white boy from Philly. What a pale, ghostly boy. He wouldn’t even get two looks in Leavenworth, not like my loving man.
You people never knew how good you had it with Michael.

I want to come clean here. I am the person you people used to know as Vick Supporter 2. I was also Bad News, and I created FALCONS SORRY to have someone agree with me when I would defend Mike Vick. That’s why I also created bigeasy831 during the Saints game.
But I do. I do.
“Couldn’t have said it better myself”
But on a serious note, how many years will it take the CHOKE to win a playoff game, 2,3,4, 5 years?

Year after year, the Falcons have a sub-par secondary. Big Play Ray, Charles Dimry, etc…But the current bunch may be the worst of all. Dimitof has his work cut out for him in the off season. replace the entire secondary.

There was no chance at all with Smith going for 2. The Falcons are really weak at that kind of play. Remember how it can take them 3 tries to punch it in from the one? And with the media crucifixion that Belichick got this past week, which included one of ESPN’s writers late in the week absolutely and totally flipping out about it long after everyone else had gotten over it, I would imagine that Smith didn’t feel any luckier than somebody staring at Dirty Harry Callahan’s gun and being asked if they think they counted the number of shots correctly.

I love my Falcons and am damn proud of their effort and their scrap and their “damn we can win this” ways. NFL overtime rules do indeed suck–both teams should have a chance to show what they can do. A coin toss should not give you a 2/3rds advantage–google it and you will see the stats. But hey, it is what it is. The outcome sucked no doubt, but it was nice to see how hard they played. Matty Ice is back–and Snelling is one heck of a third string running back. Looking forward to the playoffs when we get in at 10-6. Night yall. PS I love these Falcons. A Superbowl is coming our way. And I don’t mean appearance. I am talking a win.

THERE’S NOTHING WRONG WITH THE OVERTIME RULES. REMEMBER THE YEAR THE FALCONS WENT TO THE SUPERBOWL VS THE MINNESOTA VIKINGS? THE VIKINGS WON THE TOSS BUT THE FALCONS DEFENSE THEN HAD HEART AND THEY CARED ABOUT WINNING. THEY STOPPED THE VIKING AND GAVE THE BALL TO THE OFFENSE AND CHANDLER AND CO. WENT DOWN, GOT IN SCORING RANGE AND MORTON ANDERSON DRILLED THE GAME WINNER. THE FALCONS TEAM THEN, CARED ABOUT WINNING THIS FALCON TEAM DOES NOT CARE NOR DO THEY HAVE THE HEART AND PRIDE. WHEN I SEE THE DEFENSE LET A MEDIOCRE BACKFIELD OF THE CAROLINA PANTHERS BEAT THEM, THEN THEY TURN AROUND AND CAN’T COVER THE BIG SLOW TE OF THE GIANTS, BOSS, CONSTANTLY CAUGHT BIG PASSES IN THE CLUTCH, THEN ELAM ONCE AGAIN CAN’T MAKE FIELD GOAL THAT A HIGH SCHOOL KICKER CONSISTENTLY MAKES, YOU TELL ME, DOES THAT SOUND LIKE A TEAM THATS TRYING TO WIN? HECK NO.THERE CORNER COULDN’T MAKE THE GEORGIA BULLDOGS SECONDARY AND THEY ARE ALL THEY HAVE TO RELY ON?MAKES YOU WONDER ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION AS A WHOLE. WELL THEY CAN FINISH OUT THE SEASON BY JUST GOING TO THROUGH THE MOTION. BRING ON THE NBA SEASON AND THE HAWKS, THEY CARE ABOUT WINNING PLUS THEY ARE TRYING TO WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP. I AM FINISHED WITH THE FALCONS FOR THE REST OF THE SEASON. WHY SHOULD WE FANS CARE? THE FALCONS DON’T

Here is how I see the season:
We get to 10 wins by beating the Bucs twice, the Bills, the Jets and EITHER the Eagles or Saints at home (no small order — but we need just 1 in our DOME). My money says that gets us in the Playoffs this year (NFC East still needs to beat up on one another)
We get 9 wins and break the curse by just beating the Bucs twice, Bills and winning 1 of 3: Jets, Saints, or Eagles — but playoffs may come down to tie breaks, which currently are not favorable.
If we can’t beat the Bucs twice and the Bills, we don’t deserve the playoffs. This is year 2 of the re-build. In year 1, we went 11 wins and a playoff appearance. Chillax. Year 3 will bolster the secondary and maybe add a receiver (plus, we get Douglas back). Injuries have been absolutely BRUTAL this year: Our first 2 draft picks (Jerry and Moore), Brian Williams, Norwood, Turner, Sam Baker is hurt, Abe is hobbled, Trey Lewis is never healthy .. and don’t forget Harry Douglas — who was a phenom last year and clicked with Ryan .. and, again, Finneran. How may other teams still in contention have had this type of injury situation????

Mark, don’t know if you caught it but Bob Costas, during halftime in the Eagles v. Bears game stated a good case for the overtime rules to be changed. In my mind, the Falcons were screwed. This is certainly one area where college FB has an edge over the NFL. It’s time to change the overtime rules, and thanks to Costas for the most sensible argument ever…..

Until we get two stud defensive ends that consitently pressure and at least one corner that can cover man to man we will always be the brides maid never the bride. I love my Falcons but next off season Thomas Dimitroff go ahead and spend the money and get a stud defensive end opposite Abraham and a corner that can cover man to man in free agency. We are under the cap you know… We can pick up some nice pieces in the draft but we need proven leaders now on defense in a couple of positions.

I understand the process of field goals. Ultimately, the kicker IS at fault. He, the holder, and the snapper work on the process every day at practice. That is the onlt thing they do other than Koenan getting his share of punts. There is no excuse- period. If Elam is not content with the timing of the process, then he needs to make sure it is corrected during the week. HIS FAULT!

Interesting comments made by Costas…I like his ideas. I’m a Falcons fan thru and thru, but let me ask this…if we had won the toss, gone down and scored, would we be making the same argument for overtime rule changes?
Everyone keeps talking about the injuries to Moore and Jerry. Had William Moore not been injured, he would have been the starter over DeCoud and DeCoud has been one of the really bright spots on our defense. I’m not sure Moore was good enough to beat out both DeCoud and Coleman for a starting position as one of our safeties.

The success rate for 2 point conversions is 44%. The coin toss, of course, is 50%. The way the D was playing, and the way the O was playing, taking a chance on the two seems to be a reasonable second guess of Smith.
It would have surprised me, though.
