East Rutherford, N.J. – I’d never say I’m smart or anything. For one thing, you folks know better. For another, I thought there was no way my alma mater would win in Athens last night. (When last my alma mater won in Athens, I was just out of school. And that was a long time ago.)
But I digress. This isn’t about Willie Martinez or Mark Richt. (I suspect we’ll get around to both these next few days.) This is about the Falcons, who are about to play the New York Giants, and the one thing I can say for sure is that they’re almost exactly where I expected them to be on the weekend before Thanksgiving.
I had them 5-4 at this point, and the only part I got wrong was I had the results of the Carolina games flipped. I also had them losing today. But I also had them winning the NFC South, which won’t happen, and finishing 10-6, which is still within reach even if they’re 5-5 when night falls on Manhattan. (Which is across the river, as you might know. And yes, I’m aware I’m not technically “live from New York,” but somehow “live from Jersey” doesn’t resonate.)
Before you ask, I should report that — as of 10:31 a.m. EST — there’s no word on the availability of Michael Turner or Jerious Norwood. Esteemed colleague D. Orlando Ledbetter is endeavoring to find out whether either or both will play, but I can’t see Turner doing much if he does anything. And how long has it been since Norwood did anything, period?
(UPDATE: Both Turner and Norwood are inactive.)
And that’s all I’ve got at the moment. Except for this: When last Kentucky won at Sanford Stadium, Prince Charles and James Brown were in attendance. (The year was 1977.) Kentucky would win 33-0 — the Big Blue finished 10-1 that year but couldn’t go to a bowl owing to, er, probation — and it was essentially a wretched day all around for Vincent J. Dooley. But one memory still makes him smile:
Dooley and Fran Curci, who was Kentucky’s coach and who had no great appreciation for the trappings of royalty, were standing at midfield before the game when the Prince of Wales was escorted up. Dooley said, “Your highness, this is Fran Curci.”
And Curci said, “Hey, Prince.”
I’ll advise if any princes happen by today. If they do, I’ll say hey for you. And I’ll be here to chat about anything — Falcons, Giants, Dogs, Cats, James Brown — until this one ends. Please join me, won’t you?

Mark, you know my policy on Falcon blogs, but let me say this: As much as I have defended CMR, last night’s loss was the most inexcusable UGA loss since the Goff/Vandy homecoming game in the mid-90’s. CMR has simply got to turn this around. So this is also where I apologize to you for being down on UGA before the season. I gave you a lot of grief for it, and now I’m eating crow. But NOBODY could have predicted it was going to be this bad.

Mr. Bradley – as a Bulldog fan, can’t wait to be done with Blue this weekend. checking on your blog spelling:
And I’ll be hear to chat about anything
Shouldn’t it be “here” and not “hear”? Hey, its early Sunday, not trying to be a pain this early but my Mom used to drill this into me when looking at my homework. Same thing with “they’re” and “their”…..
Falcons will get their butts handed to them today if Ryan can’t hold it together. He needs to have a zero turnover effort and our run defense needs to step up today for us to have a chance. And can anyone get to Manning in a 4-down lineman set today? haven’t seen a whole lot from our front 4 lately, especially Abraham – what up with that? Biermann needs to shake it loose early for us.

My Saturday night: Got off the plane in Newark, saw on the iPhone the Bulldogs had just gone up 20-6. Figured, “That’s it.” Got to the hotel, went down to the workout room, came back upstairs and saw Georgia was behind 34-27. Could not believe it.
If I’m not mistaken, that might have been the biggest crowd before which a UK team has ever won. Think about that.

we was on our way to the game and was to look for the BIG DAWG TO EAT when the truck broke down but the tellyvison still works back at the doublewide so we was okay to still see the BIG DAWG EAT. Then the BIG DAWG did not want to eat and we was sad. And was sad also that the mascot died when he saw the BIG DAWG was not hungery cause we do like to eat but the BIG DAWG did not eat. The pitbull we keep back yard at the doublewide always like to eat and maybe we kin get us a new mascot pitbull so the BIG DAWG can eat again. Anyhows I never was thinking the DAWGS was not to win becase we are the SEC and we always beats the teams that are not the SEC so them kentukky coalminers was sure to lose but somehows they did beat the BIG DAWG. and now I am thinken why do we play the teams not in the SEC we should not play the coalminers ever again no more. But we do like to play the teams not SEC sometimes cause we do always beat them and they gots us a game down Atlanter way nex saturday ha ha ha that will be the end of them crybaby yella jakkets cause the BIG DOG WILL EAT on the yellajakkets sure nuff. And iffin we was to get one a them pitbulls for to be the mascot on the Atlanter game then the BIG DAWG will EAT and we will have a good old time down the bar at the croosroad. Now I am be thinken bout that bar down the croosroad and it is sunday but they gots the back door for the regulars so after church I am there. All of the bulldog nation can like this bar they got pixtures of UGA and the team and crown royal with coke cola too.

Oh, and Brewdawg: I didn’t expect it would be this bad, either. I predicted 8-4, and up until last night I’d only missed on one Georgia prediction. (I had them winning in Knoxville.) But losing to Kentucky at home changes everything.
Still no word on Turner or Norwood. Coming any minute, I’d guess.

Mark,
I don’t want to stick around and talk Falcons because it’s only a matter of time before Vick Supporter 2 / Bad News / bigeasy831 / “Choke” comes on here, hijacks the blog, and totally ruins it for everyione else who just wants to talk Falcons:
But please tell me you have something excoriating and vicious with the unvarnished truth prepared to throw Mark Richt’s way Monday.
Also, if you wouldn’t mind tearing Buck Belue a new one for all of the mudslinging he does against folks like us who’ve been rightly calling for Martinez’s job for two years. He doesn’t have a leg to stand on when it comes to things like facts or truth, so he just sits on his media perch and ridicules, because he’d rather keep his cozy ties to the people who are running our program into the ground than to actually speak the TRUTH and have any actually loyalty to our program, which Mark Richt is simply just a caretaker (doing a piss-poor job), and NOT the program itself.
Thanks.

Even as a GT fan I thought UGA had their game in hand and then the wheels came off their bus. I know there are a lot of angry UGA fans (everywhere) and last nights game was hard to swallow. We now have a great coach in CPJ, but you have had and still have a tremendous coach and an even better person in CMR.There is not a better coach in the market who you could replace him with, and it would be insanity to even consider it. Look what has happened to Notre Dame with their coaching carousel. I can see blaming the head coach for all the excessive penalties which smells of undisciplined players, but I see him pulling those guys out and making them sit….a step in the right direction. Yes, one or both coordinators are probably gone at the season’s end, but UGA fans “come on man!”, you lost all of your offense in last year’s draft, and like it or not, this is a rebuilding year. Suck it up! You can’t win huge every year, and if you check CMR’s record, most NCAA teams and even SEC teams would take that in a heartbeat. You’re going to come back, and this year’s disasters were probably more player caused than coaching caused. All the turnovers in the second half were player related, at least to my eyes. From what I could tell, if you take those away, and instead of fumbling at the goal line, UGA wins easily last night. Suck it up, take your lumps this year and start next year as good fans, not bandwagon impatient idiots.
And before I forget, GT is salivating on all the holes to run through the DL next week. It should be a foregone conclusion, but nothing’s guaranteed, so that’s why they play the game.

Speaking of lines and the Tech-Ga. game, Willie Martinez has given a nickname to his front seven, in order to help them build a sense of identity and cohesiveness for the big game.

The desperate Giants will come out with gnashing teeth, arms flailing, and bug-eyed on defense…the Falcons must withstand the flurry in the first couple of possessions to stay in the game. Of course, this isn’t the first time they’ve seen this…Chi, Dal, and Wash, came out the same way. I just think NYG is more desperate and they have probably punched a few holes in locker room walls since the last bitter loss to SD.

meanwhile, in theory, the maginot line was an excellent defensive fortification. only problem was the forts were fixed in place so there was no abiliity to be mobile and concentrate strength where the germans attacked. in fact, all the germans did was go around the end of the wall and attack from the rear. “hit em where they ain’t” i think is the appropriate phrase. end of lesson, willie

My last post was about UGA, not the Birds–sorry. Here are my thoughts about today’s game.
I wish I thought that the Falcons have a chance, but with all of the miscues from the last 4 weeks (interceptions, injuries, etc…) I don’t hold much hope. I still say MR is injured this year because his passing delivery looks different from last season, and all of the inaccurate throws seem to justify my opinion. I believe he will walk around the sophomore wall he’s been banging on, it’s just a matter of how long will it take. And without MT we don’t have a chance in the running game. That is an ominous sign for a defensive front built to rush and sack the QB. I just hope we don’t get too many people hurt today….it could be very ugly. I want us to win, I just don’t expect it.

Hope that Dimitroff will pick both Miami Hurricane cornerbacks in the draft.
Hope that BVG won’t leave for a college head coaching job and we can see what he can do with actually good players, as opposed to knowing what he can do with a lot of smoke and mirrors.
Hope that next year, a healthy Harry Douglas IS what this team has been missing all year.

Actually, the Falcons get the ball first in the second half.
Falcons had a chance to take the lead and had to settle for a field goal, which was missed. Falcons had a chance to take the lead and fumbled after a sack and the Giants got a touchdown. Now it’s a 10-point. This wasn’t how I imagined it would go today, but 17-7 after one half sounds about right.
Falcons’ offense has to do better. There’s no other way to put. And that starts with the quarterback. (Yes, the quarterback.)

Mark,
How much blame should Mike Mularky get here?
He doesn’t seem to want to, I don’t know, ADAPT to the situation at hand.
He keeps on sticking to these 2 reciever, 1 TE sets, with NO running back acting as an outlet in passing situations.
How much better off would Ryan and the Falcons be if they started spreading the field a little like the Patriots do?
Ryan can’t be blamed when they only run out two patterns and NO ONE is open, AND he doesn’t have an outlet available in the flats.

Ryan has little time(vs. 3/4 rushers) and no lanes to run in if flushed. Giants make catch, Roddy White doesn’t and Elam misses again. Team not good and not able to overcome injuries. I still say that Ryan is injured this year….the last 7 games his release has not looked smooth like it did last year. I also think there are some mental issues that have him playing with ‘happy feet’ He’s scared to throw it because of the int’s and he’s confusing himself with the last running QB we had. Let’s have some screens, a lot more runs, and give him some protection. He’s got the tools, he just has to get past the sophomore wall.

This game is not over.
Ryan in year 2 is not the same as year 1.
Why?
He is playing tougher competition.
He has a year of film on him and teams have adjusted.
Is he skittish? Yes.
Why?
His O Line is not pass protecting like they did last year.
Why?
They are playing better defenses.
What is wrong with Ryan?
His mechanics are off.
He has developed happy feet.
That happens when a player does not have consistent protection.
Our run game has suffered most of the season.
Remember everyone asking, “What’s wrong with Turner?
His play only improved the last three games.
Ryan will improve.
Ryan haters expect him to play like veterans.
Ryan haters are impatient and unreasonable.
Give him two more seasons.
Then you can judge him to be a Harrington.

well the jury is still out on how this season plays itself out, but one thing is for sure, this is probaly one of the mose snakebitten organizations in pro sports. In 1999 RB Jamaal Anderson suffers a season ending injury to crush our hopes for a back to back winning season….in 2003 Micheal Vick suffers a season ending injury, again crushing our hopes for back to back winning seasons…..and now to the present 2009 season…..Harry Douglas, J. Norwood, and M.Turner have all sufferesd injuries that have seriously impacted our chances to finally get over this infamous hump. I still think we can do it this yr, but the missed field goals and untimely INT’s are not helping. If we lose today, than I don’t see us doing any better than 8-8, because those bankable wins against Tampa Bay, are starting to look a whole lot tougher……Tampa bay is playing much better than they were just a few weeks ago.

Here’s what happened with Domonique Foxworth. He wanted No. 1 cornerback money. (Champ Bailey money.) The Falcons didn’t think he was a true No. 1 cornerback. So they let him leave for Baltimore, which gave him $17 million guaranteed, which is way more than the Falcons were willing to pay.
Not saying it was the correct move. But that’s how the team saw it.
Meanwhile...I've been vindicated!

His name was Domonique Foxworth. We should have kept him but we didn’t want to make an investment on defense. We let Grady walk too and drafted Peria Jerry but he got hurt and we have no one to take the attention off Abraham and, as a result, we have no pass rush making the already weak defensive backfield even more vulnerable.

I hate to tell you “All I’m Saying Is…” but last year Foxworth looked good at times, but look at the talent around him on the defensive side of the ball. My point is we knew our defense was vulnerable last year and that they played above expectations but coming into 2009 we decided to invest in the offense and not the defensive side of the ball.
So we let the one good corner go because we didn’t think he was worth Champ Bailey money (who is?) and now all we have are lousy corners—but hey, at least we have plenty of cap room (which will really help us during this season).

Houston is a LOSER! Did you see him line up for that PAT on the end. He comes out of the snap and takes a few steps then just watches. He just gave up. You would think when you are getting burned all day long you would have some pride about yourself and you would play as hard as you can and atleast make an attempt to block the PAT. If I was Mike Smith I would cut him as soon as the game is over along with Elam and have them pay their own way home.

Still have a shot. Plenty of time left in the game. Giants obviously came out in the second half targeting Houston since their first play was a deep one on him. Clearly, we have to go to various blitz schemes to make up for our d-backs today.

If you have a good DB, let him go in free agency. This was your team can stay crappy.
Jenkins put his forearm in a defenders neck in New England, because he did not want to get tackled, i.e., pushing off. He just had an opportunity to catch a floater in the end zone, but he screwed it up, because it did not want to get tackled. I hope we can draft a receiver next year who does not play scared. Jenkins’ fear is his worst enemy.

As I recall, last year everyone loved our receivers (White and Jenkins) and said that they all underperformed in the past because of the inaccuracy and/or weak arms of the prior QBs (Leftwich, Redman, and Vick). Now, the pendulum has swung in the other direction and our receivers stink again. Some people cannot accept the fact that a second year quarterback is having an uneven season speckled with some poor play which happens with a second year QB.
Falcons won the 3rd quarter. Defense must hold. What defensive adjustments did we make at halftime? None evident thus far at least not any that are working.
