Before Monday’s game, someone mentioned to Mike Woodson that his team, wonder of wonders, had just ascended to the top of Marc Stein’s NBA power ratings on ESPN.com.
In case you missed that, let me repeat it: The Atlanta Hawks are, at least for this week, regarded as the finest basketball team in the best league in the world. The … Atlanta … Hawks.
“That’s pretty nice,” said Woodson, smiling as he spoke. And Woodson, as you know, is frugal with his smiles. But think about where this franchise and this coach have been, and where they are now: From 13-69 in 2004-2005 to No. 1 after Week 3 in November 2009. (And not just according to ESPN. The power ratings by John Schuhmann of NBA.com likewise have the Hawks at the top. Can the BCS be far behind?)
“I didn’t know that,” said Josh Smith after being informed of his team’s new lofty perch.
“It’s just Week 2, though,” counseled Randolph Morris, who was seated alongside. (Actually, it’s Week 3. But close enough.) “We want to be there at Week 50.”
Which would be shortly after Halloween 2010, which I don’t believe is what Morris meant. Still, you get the drift. It’s a long season, et cetera. But you know what? These Hawks might be No. 1 for a while yet.
After three-plus quarters Monday night, it looked as if that ranking wouldn’t last 24 hours, let alone 50 weeks. The Hawks trailed the Trail Blazers by 10 points with eight minutes left. But the home team steadied itself and nearly won in regulation — Rudy Fernandez hit an outrageous tying trey over Al Horford at the horn — but did win in overtime.
And now this club is 9-2 having handled a good Portland team twice and having won in Boston and having blown out Denver here. That’s a flying start by any measure, and it shouldn’t be considered an aberration. This team is good, folks. This team is really deep, really gifted, really good.
“It’s kind of nice to sit at the top of the division,” said Woodson, speaking of an NBA South that also includes Orlando, Miami and Washington. “There’s nothing wrong with winning your division.”
Could that happen? Sure it could. The smart money will still ride with the Magic, but the smart money wouldn’t have had the Hawks at 9-2 having played six road games. The smart money wouldn’t have been on the home team with eight minutes left Monday night, but the Hawks wore down the Blazers and outclassed them in the end. (Joe Johnson owned Brandon Roy, FYI.)
And to those who keep saying the Hawks must have a big man to do anything of substance: Portland has LaMarcus Aldridge, the fourth player drafted in 2006, and Greg Oden, the first player drafted in 2007, at power forward and center. Aldridge and Oden combined for 29 points and 16 rebounds Monday. Josh Smith and Al Horford had 35 points and 26 rebounds between them. And the Hawks outscored Portland 56-38 in the lane.
“They’re playing for something,” Woodson said of his men. And then: “They know they’ve got a chance to win every time they step on the floor.”
Five years ago, the Hawks figured it differently. They figured they’d lose no matter what happened. But look now. Look at those power ratings. Save the Web page and print it out. Put it in a frame and hang it on yonder wall. Because seeing the Hawks as No. 1 in anything good is truly a moment to treasure.

so hard to believe the progress theyre making…we just have to stay healthy. this team reminds me of the pistons teams from earlier this decade, with the sum of its parts being better than the whole. The pistons team that won it all emphasized the team rebounding concept that the hawks have been using and is what i feel is the key to their success. Just gotta stay healthy

These Hawks make me, a native Atlantan and long time Hawk fan, proud. The young guys have matured enough to listen to their coach and execute. They have also learned that if they are down, there is still hope because they are a different team now than they were in the past. Leading in points in the paint, blocked shots, dunks all indicate a strong disciplined team. If this trend continues, I expect to see this team still playing in June. GO HAWKS!!!!!

Mark, I’m not as emotionally involved with the Hawks as I am with the Braves, because, with my not living in the Atlanta area, I dont see their games every night. However, I’m very proud of this team’s start.
Yes, we’ve had some nice wins, but the key will be piling up 50 plus wins, and hopefully, being able to stare down, and at least compete with, the Cavs and or Celtics, in the Eastern Finals, Come June 2010.

‘Bout time you do more Hawks material. The game tonight against Portland was as close to a play-off atmosphere as you could get. Last minute theatrics, energetic crowd and a big win.
This is a basketball town, put a winner on the floor and people will come. It’s time for the Spirit Group and the Thrashers to get out of the way.
Crawford looks like the easy favorite for 6th man of the year award and Joe silently puts up MVP type numbers per usual. This is a team to get excited about.
Sports Illustrated has the Hawks at 2 behind Pheonix, btw.

This team is still (one of) the most athletics teams in the league. Still on of the youngest. We have one all star with a potential 2 more. Joe is becoming the leader we sorely needed. Jamal is H O T. Al is a beast. Smoove has stopped shooting 20 feet and beyond and is dominating the airwaves. Bibster is doing the little things a veteran should do to be the grease in the wheels of this steam roller.
Mostly though, this team has MATURED. They know how to win a game. The know how to pace themselves and control the tempo even when they’re behind on the scoreboard.
This team is really building something special here.

Atlanta Hawks ranked #1 on any national poll is a moment to remember. The team is on a roll. I did not think I would ever say this but Josh (JSmoove) Smith is our MVP so far this season. Guy is playing under control 90% of the time. That other 10% is directed at his point guard skills, wish he would give ball to a guard and fill a lane. Shot selection has been the greatest improvement and I can live with the occasional jumpshot. He is dominating in the paint, getting rebounds & points in the paint. He keeps this up he will be an All Star. Also, believe the NBA gave his Player of the Week trophy to JJ. I believe JJ was the third best player on his team that week behind Josh & Crawford.
Big ups to JJ last night against Portland, as he brought us home in the 4th & OT, Another solid game from Josh (20 points & 16 boards),
We are number one on a bubble as Miami is playing well also; DWade in town tomorrow night. Let’s see if we can match up with them. JJ needs to play big in this game like he did in LA, but maintain his aggressiveness for the whole 48 minutes.
Observation time: Have you noticed against elite teams JJ takes a supporting cast roll? Example players like Kobe, DWade his numbers take a dip along with his play. The last thing I want is DWade talking about Phillip Arena as ” His House”. Joe should make it clear that this is his house.
Follow the lead of Kobe from the LA game. Joe came out and posted 18 points in the first on the Lakers. I believe Kobe had 8 points. They sent Artest over on Joe and he finished the game with 26 & Kobe stepped his game up and finished with 33 points. Joe needs to make a statement game against an elite talent.
Observation 2: Anyone see the confidence of Teague starting to decline, along with his energy level and style of play? Has Woody gotten to him too? Teague does not seem to be the same player on the floor!!!

Joe Johnson gets lots of love and rightfully so, but Josh Smith makes this team great. Smith has the ability to put this team on his back and will them to win. It’s interesting to see him just know realizing that. Josh Smith is my MVP for this team right now.

Actually Mr. Bradley. Randolph Morris is right on both counts. From a literal point of view, yes, it is week 3. But, from a championship mentality point of view? It’s week 2, or day 2 even, the first hour, the very beginning so to speak… in other words it’s early man… too early… earlier than you can imagine.
As for week 50? Ahh the brilliance of RFM a.k.a. Nostradamus. Right yet again… We do, in fact, want to be there at week 50… It’s like Drake said, we “want this thing forever…”

As a huge Magic fan I hate seeing the Hawks here but if your a huge NBA fan then you have to love all the compatition this year. If the Magic can’t win it all then go Hawks or go Heat. Bucks? WOW

Mark, what I like about this team is its ability to run with the first or second unit. The Hawks can match their second unit with anybody and run them out of the gym. I really like what I see. The only problem I see is that their half court O is not that great and you know you have to have that in the Playoffs.

KEY PLAY OF THE GAME LAST NIGHT: 4th quarter, clock is running down, ball rotates out to Josh Smith at the shoulder of the lane, he cocks to shoot…. and then he passes it to Marvin under the basket for a layup. In the prior 5 years, Josh shoots that shot and we all groan as it clanks off the iron. If Josh continues to play selfless ball, the Hawks have a real chance.

No, Joe did not own Brandon Roy – no one ever has or ever will OWN Roy – he’s one of the best 2 guards in the league and he can score at will – Joe did however impose his will as a scorer, defender and leader – I’m glad to see that the team is not letting the premature accolades go to their heads – I love Teague’s quickness and energy – I want to see the guards look for more alley oops though – we got some home cookin last night – the refs gave the home team the benefit of a doubt and they swallowed their whistles last night

This is a great example of staying with something and seeing through the fog. Took a long time and a lot of consternation for hawks fans, but Woodson’s team has arrived.
They just need to stay focused and work together through a long season. All of the bad times, bad games, “me” players are gone now. This is a great living example that if you want it bad enough and work for it long enough that anything can be achieved.
Keep it up Atlanta Hawks – one week at a time.

Fans will start going to games when regular season tickets for some of the lower level seats get cheaper. Sucks to say but its true. No one wants to pay 75 bucks to see the bobcats on a wednesday night. Unless, it was 30 bucks for some of the lower seats to see the bobcats on a wednesday night. Same goes for the thrashers…at least when you go to braves games you can get tickets or stubhub tickets for second row in right field for 10-15 bucks..people will say..ATL has the cheapest tickets compare them to orland boston lakers blah blah blah..we arent the lakers..
Another thing that grinds my gears is the locals who sit on their butts the entire game..they dont stand up for nothing unless jsmoove does a 360 back flip dunk…its kinda like when mike vick was with the falcons…
I love the hawks! I am 23 so I cant remember all the history of them. I remember the years of always playing or seemed like playing the bulls in the first round of the playoffs and remember the 11-0 start or something like that..the guarantee season ticketholder bet to make the playoffs (fail)..and now this batch of hawks that seem to be doing something special…I hope we can stay away from injuries..if we do we will coast into the playoffs..the question is what seed will we be?

If Josh Smith keeps filling up the stat sheet lines, except for TO and 3 pointers, this team will soar.16.3 points a game on 58% shooting with 8.9 rebounds is good, but its the 0, ZERO, ZIP 3 pointers for the year that make me happy. Then you add 2 steals and 2.5 blocks and 4 assists [ yes, I rounded up] a game; those are numbers that win championships.

The Detroit championship team of 2004 is indeed Rick Sund’s model, Decatur – no one superstars but good players at every position. Those Pistons had Tayshaun Prince, Rasheed Wallace, Ben Wallace, Chauncey Billups and Richard Hamilton.

But also, this is only Week 3, so I don’t put much stock in it. All it should say is that they have a good formula, but they must continue to improve in order to get better.

At no point last night did I think the Hawks would beat the Blazers until about midway through the 4th quarter. Last night was possibly our worst we could play and we still won. That just doesn’t happen in years past. Let’s hope that Crawford doesn’t go cold like that again for a while.

First of all, everyone needs to calm down. Hawks have started their season better than this group and ended poorly — anyone remember our 15 win, 0 loss start a decade ago and how that season ended? So let’s be happy and thankful but not get too excited. As Randolph meant to say: it is way too early to think about anything other than the next game.
Second, playoff basketball is way different than regular season. The 2004 Pistons better be our model because they were the exception — undersized, overachieving center named Ben Wallace — that proves the rule that you typically must have size at the Center position to excel during the half-court, bump and grind game that is the NBA playoffs. So quit trying to gloat Bradley because its again way too early to say that we can get it down down low with what we have.
Third, let’s see how we compete against the Cavaliers who appear to have put it together recently and the Magic because the Celtics subsequently lost to the Indiana Pacers after we beat them, Denver was missing Kenyon Martin and JR Smith when we beat them, and the Lakers destroyed us. We will know more about what we can do against the elite teams as the season goes on and that’s what matters for this club since we proved ourselves to be a top eight team overall in the NBA last year after winning our first round series.
All that typed, I’d rather be 9 and 2 and feeling cautiously optimistic than otherwise.

I think that the success of the entire team is starting to make JJ’s job easier. In the past, I used to feel as though he had to work very hard to score. Lately it seems easier for him. In the Hornets game, Josh hit Joe with a bounce pass for a lay up as Joe cut to the rim. I can’t remember the last time Joe got such an easy basket in the half court offense.

Think back to last year, at one point or another every major player went down with injury for the hawks. Playing a man (or more) down forces young players to learn and improve their game to compensate for the loss. Add the two playoff experiences and this is a team that can weather any hard times. I think the haters on Woodson can stop, yeah I disagree with some decisons and bench rotation too, but its impossible to argue with the results. This team continues to improve, Championship

A little history. How many fans out there remember when the Hawks drafted Josh right out of High school in 2004? A 17 year old athletic but raw future talent? Remember all the naysayers spouting about how we’d wasted a pick? Wonder what they are saying now? If he had gone on to college and graduated (last year) would he have been a # 1? I personally think we owe a great deal of gratitude to Billy Knight for having the guts and vision to draft him. I personally thought it was a great pick and I believe if he stays away from injury and matures( he’s only 23 wow) he will be a bonafide SUPERSTAR. Man this feels good to see this team doing the right things and having it pay off. How about that win in Boston? Was that great or what? Long season ahead but we should only get better. Congrats to Hawks, but feel free to ignore the humorous creative writing excercise, known as “power rankings”, Marc Stein is a fine reporter, but his (and Schuhmann’s) rankings are pulp fiction: shifting sands that consistently contradict and reverse themselves from one week to the next. Fun for readers and NBA geeks to debate-over, but useless for coaches and teams. Better for the Hawks to keep their eye on the ball, and remember the only thing that matters is what real awards they take home in the post season.

So good to finally find good press on the Hawks on a regular basis. As a long time hawks fan (even through the 13-win season), I am thrilled and DID several print-screens of both Power Rankings b4 reading Mark’s suggestion. Yes, all my facebook friends have gotten copies of them!!!
On a serious note, it feels so good to be a Hawks fan and through it took me a bit to buy into the re-building plan, I bought into it a couple of years ago and now reap the rewards. As Randolph Morris would say, I hope they’re still ranked #1 come week 50!!! Go Hawks!!!

Watched the whole game last night from start to finish. I must say that even though we were down early we stayed with the game plan and came back. Sitting on my hands i was hoping that roy did not get out of control because it had the potential of getting out of hand. Defense and turnovers by the balze help this team will to win. It looks really good that the hawks are getting the attention from the league. I’m so impressed by JSmooth and his play, cant wait till he hoist one up from beyond three point range (he deserves to take one at this point) Hawks will win 60 plus games after getting through what was a tough start against some pretty good teams. Get the good teams out of the way and take care of the not so good teams. We already beat boston so matchup with orlando and cleveland are still in the air. Not worried about mia because they will be mia when as the season progresses. Go High Flying Hawks.

you have to admit that with the additions the hawks have made at the guard position. they are able to impose themselves on most teams in the league. whether or not joe johnson is playing for a contract or has just stepped up his game, the hawks are a better team from last year. i think it starts with their defensive mindset, plus the tenacity of josh smith and al horford makes for what should be a solid run in the playoffs. the only bad thing about this team is, now i can’t get cheap seats………

Hawks winning ways is based upon a complete team. No one player is the superstar. Any starting five can get it done. And Oh, don’t forget about the sixth man(Jamal Crawford).
If Hawks stay free of any major injury and maintain the unselfish play. Then they will play for the Easten Conference Championship.
Woody must have shown Josh Smith some lowpost game during the off season. I remember Mike Woodson at Broad Ripple High School. He had a smooth game within 15ft and to the rack.
Josh Smith is becoming dangerous with that in between and to the rack game. No unpredictable and wild three pointers. GOOD GAME JOSH SMOOOOOTH SMITH.

Yes, he made some very bad moves – Shelden comes to mind – but he turned Shelden into Bibby, brought us Joe and Josh and Al. Can you imagine what a disaster Babcock would have made of this?
At least some of Knight’s poor reputation comes from his unwillingness to kiss the posteriors of local media, especially the guys on the radio. For me, that orneriness always made him more likeable.

This early, it’s more important to have a reason to be excited about WHY they have a good record more than the good record itself.
WHY then?
1- J-Smooth is playing unselfish ball far more than in the past. When he sets his mind to get a rebound – he will get the rebound. Now PLEASE practice those FT’s! I know it’s boring, but missing 22 FT’s in 11 games is keeping too many potentially important points off the board.
2- Crawford has been the perfect fit for the team and one of the key benefits down the road will be that come April, JJ won’t be leading the league in minutes played and enter the playoffs exhausted.
3- Teague hasn’t put up much in the way of numbers, but the talent is certainly there. Kudo’s to Woody for getting him 10 minutes a game to he doesn’t totally rot on the bench (Law).
4- They are continuing to refuse to lose at Philips Arena. The crowds will be increasing once football goes away.
5- They simply don’t have to depend on any one person every night. As great as JJ has played (free agent year looms and he’s totally aware of that) if he’s not on that night, they can either (a) let someone else give it a legitimate try or (b) sit him down to regroup rather than in the past leaving him out there for 45 minutes to “shoot his way out of it”
6- Don’t look now, but these guys are shooting FT’s at 79.2% (and skyrockets to 84.1% sans J.Smooth). How important is this? Well, last year they shot 73.7% and at 26 attempts a night, that just raised their team scoring a point and a half a game and didn’t need any more posessions to do that.
BTW – To put the FT improvement in another light. This year they are 5th in the NBA in FT%, last year they were 28th!
So overall – the best thing I see with this team is that the great start is not a mirage. They got to 9-2 for solid reasons that there is no reason to believe should go away.

Couldn’t help but notice during a timeout that they had a feature of “favorite tv shows” on the jumbotron and Marvin said “Man, I sit at my computer and watch CSI ALL DAY.” I believe that; it reflects in your game…… That wide open baseline jumper that hit the side of the backboard told the story.
That said, Hawks are ballin’ playing 4 1/2 on 5. Unbelievable.

Hawks Ai. You would technically have the same thing but better in starting Crawford over Williams. You don’t need AI for that you already have a better version. I think that Coach Woodson likes the taller starting line up. With Jamal,Joe, and Mike on the floor at the same time certainly makes your line up smaller. Also you have a smallish front court. Trust me I would love to sit Marvin down forever.

Honestly (What) Teague is not ready for many more minutes than he is getting. He’s truly fast, but also way out of control. If you notice he cannot finish a simple lay up. He has to be eased into minutes. In his defense he is a rookie and no doubt plays like one. As for Joe being out of steam just take a look at Kobe, Lebron, Pierce, and countless others that play those type of minutes that don’t persae run out of steam. There is no such thing when the play offs arrive!!

Wow, I have watched every game for the last two years and have been amazed at the maturation of this group. I will be honest I thought Atlanta was going to lose last night because their field goal percentage up until the last eight minutes was terrible. But wow, Joe Johnson is by far the must clutch player in the eastern conference. Josh Smith and Al Horford is far and a way the most athletic pairing of post players in all of the NBA. They get offensive rebounds with ease. I almost feel sorry for teams as I watch J smooth fly over these 270lb centers and take the rebound away. If and when Marvin Williams gets some confidence and starts scoring as opposed to being dead weight, Atlanta will be front runners for an NBA title this year. You can just tell when watching this team that they are family and play unselfish basketball. There was a span of four alley oops or assisted dunks in a row just to highlight how well this team plays together. By years end as Teague gains more experience and Williams returns to last year’s form, I see Atlanta having home court throughout the Eastern Conference playoffs. We all know what that means. CHEERS HAWKS FANS. CONTINUE TO SUPPORT.

This team is different from last year (when they soared to a 6-0 start) in that they are getting the job done at home and on the road. Bibby keeps the momentum rolling, Joe has been steady, Marvin has been MIA (hopefully he steps it up soon), Josh is playing like he really wants to be an All Star, Big Al has been solid in the post and Jamal Crawford is a revelation coming off the bench. I hope these guys continue to play consistent team ball and, advance deep into the playoffs this year. GO HAWKS!!!

The thing I walked away with from yesterday’s game was the way the Hawks snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. There is no way, no now that they should have won yesterday; their game was abysmal. How many shots – including free throws – clanked the rim? JC was pitiful. One of the reasons we had so many offensive rebounds is because we missed so many shots.
But that being said, the Hawks’ TENACITY is what won this game. They simply were not to be denied. It’s like they turned on the switch, their D elevated to another level, their shots started dropping (even the 3’s), and before you know it, they willed themselves to victory.
I don’t know if they can win by sheer will against the likes of the Lakers, Cavs or Magic, but there’s no reason to believe that this isn’t Top 5 NBA material that takes the court every night. The depth is outstanding. Half court offense still lacks – not enough ball movement last night – but the sum of the parts is greater than the whole. I may need to double up on my blood pressure medicine!

Not to take anything away form Rick Sund because he has done a great job of adding pieces but Billy Knight had a great vision for building a TEAM. For all the heat he took for taking this team from the scrap heap he looks like a genius now. Even though he is on the outside looking in right now he is my GM of the Year. Every major piece we have on this team, he put there. In this microwave world of quick fixes he was steady and patient and now we reap the benefits. Billy should not be out of work much longer. By far this is the most intriguing Hawks team to watch ever!!!

I have been very hard on both of them over the past couple of years and this year they have proven me wrong. I’m proud of both of them and proud of this team. Mark, I actually printed out the standings yesterday when they were 8-2 just like you said. I want to remember how this feels to be on top. This has been a loooong journey from the 2004 season.
Two things that stand out to me with the success they are having this year…Joe Johnson is taking more control in crunch time. He always would get 20 pts, but the 4th quarter he was absent in alot of games. Also Josh Smith is not taking those errant 3pt jump shots and is not turning the ball over.

There were moments last night when the Hawks reverted to iso-Joe form, Big Mike, but at the end the isos weren’t him just standing and dribbling (which he can do sometimes) but make quick and correct decisions. The biggest basket in regulation was a handoff from Bibby where Joe went hard down the left side and left Steve Blake and hoisted a runner over Greg Oden.

Continue to justifiably excoriate him for passing on Chris Paul and Brandon Roy but Billy Knight saved our franchise when he swung the deal for Joe (at a time when no one seemingly wanted to play for the Hawks) and he got us over the playoff hump when he swung the trade for Bibby.

woodson still sucks. crazy how many layups were given up early on. it will be interesting to see if the hawks get sharper as the season goes on. that’s what really good teams do with good coaches.

Congrats to the Hawks for finally starting to realize their potential. That’s a nice team you have there in Atlanta. Hopefully that means people will start filling that arena because it’s pretty pathetic to see such a lack of support for a good and exciting team. I swear, watching the game on TV, the cheers for good Blazers plays were just as loud as for good Hawks plays. That announcer worked overtime (in a very annoying way) to try to get the crowd yelling. I hope for the team’s sake, and for the league’s sake, that this changes soon.
I don’t mean to detract from the win, but don’t forget this was the last game of a 5-game road trip, the second of a back-to-back, and it the fourth game the Blazers played in five days. Fatigue was pretty obvious in the fourth quarter and overtime. I think the Hawks’ win in Portland, and their big wins against the Celtics and Nuggets, were much more impressive.

The win was impressive because the Hawks played poorly for 3 and a half quarters, Great teams find a way – even on bad nights. The consensus at half time from nearby fans was the Hawks would win but no one thought they would play so poorly for so much of the game.
This is a nice start, but only a start. At the current pace the Hawks would not catch the Bulls for most wins in a season and there is no Michael Jordan in Atlanta to push each player to max out his game.
I see no comments here on Coach McMillan’s decisions, such as leaving Andre Miller on the bench for most of the 4th and overtime. Why sign a high dollar free agent and not use him in the clutch? And LeMarcus Aldridge seemed to be a forgotten man in the 4th and OT.
Also, as poorly as the game was played by the Hawks, Rudy Fernandez had to hit TWO desperation 3’s to put the game in overtime. One at the end of the first quarter as well as the one at the end of regulation.
Give Marvin some slack. He lost some of his shots to Jamal Crawford and has always been a complementary player and every team needs that type. I believe he will grow into his role and be one of the most talented players of this type in the league – and until last year I thought he would be a total bust.
A long way yet to go.

Iverson is a coach killer, a chemistry killer and ultimately a team killer. Ideally, either the Lakers, Suns, Celtics, Cavs or Magic will sign him. Iverson is the Anti-Jordan.

Just 4 or 5 seasons ago…this team went 13-69. I thought to myself “this is horrible but we just need to give Woodson a chance to turn things around”. Well folks…he has done just that.

Who even suggested Allen Iverson? Everyone knows that if Iverson was here, he’d complain (again) about coming off the bench. Besides, we have enough scorers on our team in JJ, Crawford, Bibby, Horford, Smoove, Marvin (whenever he gets going), and maybe Teague in the future.
On to brighter things, I am really impressed at the Hawks start. Obviously it’s a long season, but they’ve impressed me a lot, not only with last night’s victory, but with their road victories as well. If these Hawks can win games on the road, we should be poised to make good runs in the playoffs, making the Eastern Conference Finals and maybe even the Finals like Orlando did last year. These Hawks would not have been swept by last season’s Cavs. I don’t think they’d be swept by this season’s Cavs, either.

i knew at the begining of the season that the hawks was gonna end up at number one at some point this season… the hawks starting five are the most athletic in the league and probally one of the best in the league. we was a good team early last year. it was the fact that when people got injured, we really didnt have good back ups to actually go in the game to win.. or even maintain.. we had week links when people got injured.. now the starting five are staying heathy because they dont have to do as much and can play less minutes. and if somebody does get injured ( knock on wood ) then we have good back ups to feel in…. and now we have a lagit six man that can score at will.. jamal crawford. when him and joe and josh is in the game. people are confused on what to do…
so it is so many factors that the hawks are the best team in the league.. they are young and athletic and can run the floor all day!!!!

and i do not think the hawks can be beat 4 times in a 7 game serious.. i mean if u look at the east.. we would play boston, orlando, or cleveland, or miami in the eastern conference finals.. and neither one of those teams are showing me anything special that can destroy the hawks.. and in a championship game.. they would play the lakers or how its lookin now!!! the suns..but the suns never make it.. and i dont think the lakers can beat them in a seven game series.. and if the hawks take one game away of any series .. then its over.. cuz the hawks will win at home in the play offs!!!!!!!!!!!

Marv should start because he can defend well and it takes a little pressure off Joe. I think his shots will start to fall. Mo Evans has been nice off the bench. I dont think you can start Bibby JJ and Craw at least not vs a team with a good front line.

Sign JJ to an extension, now!! We finally have a chance at something long term special (if Josh Smith keeps his head on) – offer some head turning money to JJ – get into luxury tax territory if needed – get him out there long term.
And while we are at it – sign Coach Woodson to at least a three year deal, with a major raise – he deserves it!

I agree, I think Marvin needs to come off the bench. (I thought that when we had Josh Childress coming off the bench back in the day, too. Chills should have started). Put Jamal in there for him, slide JJ over to the small forward slot (on defense). Then, when Marvin, Mo Evans, Joe Smith, and Teague come in (gradually), we’ve still got some serious power and it lets Marvin work into his game a little more. Right now, with JJ, Al, Josh, and Bibby, Marvin’s the last option, usually on a pass-off for a 3 or a long-range jumper 2, and that’s no good. Then Jamal comes off the bench, and he’s either benched or still a tertiary option. He has no chance to get going.
Unlike some of these folks on here, I do actually think Marvin is a quality SF. He just needs to get some touches and get his game going.

jeff teague is not ready.. he comes and miss layups and shots and try to do to much,,, when he learns to control his self.. he will be very good.. reminds me of a young jamal crawford!!! he still should get playin time.. but he shouldnt get 20 minutes a game.. i say 15 is perfect for him to develope and not mess up the game with rookie mistakes

Wow, I’m a long time hawk fan and definitely glad of there success. If Josh continues to play at this level and Marvin picks his game up in the post and hits the treys like last year WOW. I do want stab at all those fans who were just trashing Mike Woodson and the Hawks after there blowout in the preseason to Orlando. Wish i could remember your post names. As i stated then and am stating now that was just preseason. You should have seen the number of comments on how the team sucks, and woodson should go and how we had no heart. IT WAS JUST ONE PRESEASON Game. All of you should man up and be ashamed of your comments. With that being said barring injury we will be just fine. But Al Hordford said it best “too early to start crowning us elite just yet”. But it sure does feel good to be able to win and make the big three, and the entire nba nation stand up and take notice. Way to go Hawks.

Don’t get too excited about the Hawks. In the NBA a team needs a superstar to get a ring. The Hawks don’t have one. Of all the Hawks teams that I have seen since they came to Atlanta in ‘68, this one doesn’t rank in the top 3, and none of those teams made it to the Finals.
