Bradley’s Buzz: UGA’s going to a bowl, but which one?

Gerogia's last trip to the Chick-fil-A was yummy. (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)

The last trip to the Chick-fil-A was yummy. Like a peach milkshake. (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)

The good news: Georgia is bowl-eligible. The not-so-good news: Shreveport still has a bowl. And, according to Matt Hayes of Sporting News Today, the Independence Bowl is where the Bulldogs are bound. (To face Iowa State, per Hayes.)

The better news: Four other bowl projectors see Georgia headed elsewhere. Stewart Mandel of SI.com has Georgia in the Music City Bowl against Boston College. Bruce Feldman of ESPN.com likewise tickets UGA for Nashville, but to oppose Florida State. Feldman’s colleague Mark Schlabach (who used to be my colleague) has Georgia coming to Atlanta for a Chick-fil-A date against Clemson. And CBSsports.com shows Georgia paired with East Carolina in the Liberty Bowl.

What this all means: Nobody knows. We’re 19 days from Bowl Selection Sunday, and the projected field for Georgia hasn’t been narrowed much at all. If you’re counting, the five projections show four different destinations with dates ranging from Dec. 27, 2009, (Music City) to Jan. 2, 2010 (Liberty).

As for Tech: Not much mystery there. Every projection save one puts the Jackets in the Orange Bowl against TCU. The exception is Hayes in Sporting News Today. He has Clemson in the Orange and Tech in the Gator against Notre Dame. There was a time when playing (and beating) Notre Dame in Jacksonville was a big deal for Tech and George O’Leary, but this year such a date would be a colossal bringdown.

The good news: Won’t happen. Tech will win the ACC. Says me.

Second-ish…

Georgia can turn all this Shreveport talk around with a win over Tech. Further, if we win out (…including our bowl game), that’ll put us at 9-4 and probably back in the lower rungs of the Top 25. And I believe that to be possible and, truthfully, about what could be expected from a team that lost two of the top 12 picks in this year’s NFL draft as underclassmen and their best offensive lineman in week one.

Either way, should be an interesting finish to the season.

Forget the Bowl Game, focus on the Game This Week!

The Dawgs can’t control where they play Bowl wise, the only thing they can control, is how they perform on the field. I like the trends. Their ONLY focus this week needs to Kentucky, not Ga Tech, not which Bowl they’ll be playing in. Ga is playing well in the last 2 games, cutting our turnovers, creating some takeaways, keep it up, don’t lose focus, attack Kentucky. Run the ball. Don’t turn it over. Call 60% run plays. Get some takeaways on defense, eliminate the giveaways on offense, win the turnover margin against Kentucky.

The reality is that the dogs will most likely win a close one versus KY and be badly beaten by GT the following week. Then they will get FSU in Nashville where they will play “valiantly” and losse to the ACC again.

Final record 7-6. Not bad for a team 1 year away from a pre-season #1 ranking, in the “mighty” SEC and a regular “top 10″ recruiting rankings.

Joe Schmoe – i went down to the peach bowl last year to watch the game. yes, it was sold out. but if you think that dome wasn’t filled with mostly purple and yellow fans from the bayou you’re kidding yourself. tech did very little to add to the sellout, and the small amount of tech fans there didn’t stay long into the second half. lsu could have sold that place out without one tech fan, doubt tech could say the same.

i don’t even want to think about bowl possibilities right now. i just want the dawgs to win the next two.

I like Benjamin’s scenario here similar to ‘06 when Stafford was a freshman. The problem is it’s probably not realistic. While they played their best three quarters against Auburn and looked like a competent team, there’s just no reason to believe we have a chance at winning out. I want to say if Wake can push Tech to the brink then we could do the same but they were flat. They were exhausted against Miami. They’ll be fresh and pumped out of their skulls when we meet.

I keep going back to the LSU game and thinking ‘what would be different if that penalty hadn’t been called’? and the truth is probably not much. They still would have been thumped by UT the next week most likely. The problem is you didn’t see improvement week to week the way you saw the UT coach’s making Crompton look all world better each week.

Realistic 7-5 and Music City. Next year is Aaron Murray the answer along with Ealey? The defensive line will be gone but so what. They didn’t stuff the run or create pressure all year. We’ll be ‘young’ again. How is it possible to be ‘young’ every single year?

If you go on the Tech web site and find the clippings area you can see the AJC clips and comments on the blogs from after the Miami game. What a hoot in light of what has happened since. Bottom line is if anyone could accurately predict college football it would not be as endlessly interesting as it is.

My prediction is just like the 50+ UGA/Tech games I can remember, it will likely be close with many surprises. The boys always feel the tradition and play their best UGA and GT.

If Tech does not put it on the ground and if we can get pressure on the QB we will win. If not UGA will win.

As for the trash talk, I remember the Dodd days and this is the first time since it feels like we can win any game that a win is not just a fluke or because we got lucky. However lets all remember something else from the Dodd days. Respect your opponent because no matter how bad you beat them this year there is always next year. I am one proud fan but no matter what happens Sat. next there is always next year.

It is going to be a good bowl. UGA is going to win out. It has taken them all year but the youth movement is starting to flow at UGA. The best thing about this youth movement is that it is being led by born and bred Georgia boys that have always dreamed of playing for UGA and mark my words when they get to that Tech game they are going to be hungry….that one game can right all of the wrongs this year (somebody’s still gonna get canned though). Was it 2006 that Tech was on their way to the ACC championship game and UGA had gotten beat by UK and Vandy in the same year but beat Tech? I would also bet that Tech was favored in 2001 (Richt’s first year) but UGA won. I wouldn’t put it past Richt to have something special up his sleave for Tech this year. If I were a Tech fan I would be very nervous….Tech should beat UGA badly, everybody has been downing UGA all year saying that it’s one of the worst teams in a long time…well guess what…if UGA jumps up and beats big bad Tech it will do more damage to Tech than if UGA gets run out of the stadium! Smells like a statement game!

I believe there should be no more than 15 bowls…and a m inimum amount of at least 2 million pay out per team! Half the schools that go to bowls lose money!

15 bowls would mean 25% of all teams still go to a bowl…minimum of 7 preferably 8 wins to qualify!

My guess is the line will come out with GT favored by 9 1/2 to 12 1/2 but will be bid down to 3 1/2 to 5 1/2 by kickoff.

Both defenses are suspect. Tech has given up a lot of big plays on special teams.

The Dogs are beginning to show that they can run the football, which is a characteristic Georgia has been known for traditionally. The doubtful status of the Green youngster might be worth a point or two towards the Bees.

Both teams come into this one with more than the usual desire, if for different reasons. I would anticipate a hard-fought game. The Tech fans are excited, and Bobby Dodd will be rocking. Fast start crucial for the Dawgs in order to quiet the crowd. Playing this Tech team from behind is not the way Dog fans would like this game to develop.

Turnovers, as is usually the case in closely-contested games, may well be determinative.

Tech doesn’t put the ball on the ground more than once, and wins 42-31.

I’m no expert on the matter but aren’t there bowl tie-ins? If UGA beats UK, they are #2 in the SEC East. Assuming both UF and Bama go to a BCS game, wouldn’t that put UGA in one of the bowl games? LSU or Ole Miss would then be in the Cotton with the other in the Outback or Capital 1. Or is the assumption that that bowl will pick Tenn over UGA even though UGA is higher in the standings?

Heck, the whole season you play 3 games in 15 days (Saturday – game, Sun, Mon, Tue, Wed, Thurs, Fri, Sat – game, Sun, Mon, Tue, Wed, Thur, Fri, Sat – game). You lost that game, so STFU.

I think how the Dawgs play vs. Kentucky will telling of how they will play the rest of the season.I want to see how this team will respond after this victory against Auburn. Is this the kind of win that will salvage the season like it did in 2006? Or is it just a blimp on the radar?

If the Dawgs go out there vs. Kentucky, have 15 penalties and only win by a field goal, then they’ll get blown out by Tech to finish 7-5. But if they handle Kentucky handily( minus AJ Green), they could very well give Tech a tough out and possibly pull an upset. I think that’s what bowl committee’s look at for match ups; they love seeing a team that’s on a hot streak towards the end of the season. If UGA finishes 8-4 or 7-5 but plays well vs. Tech, I could see the Chick-fil-A bowl giving them an invitation.

The Dawgs have a couple of tough tests the next few weeks. Take care of business on the field, and they’ll get a decent bowl bid. Half-ass around and finish 6-6? Well beggars can’t be choosers.

You’re a right smart guy despite what some might say on these blogs (that might be a KY expression no?). You predicted an 8-4 finish and were spot on until the UT game and they could still finish 8-4 but not likely.
What would you say the number one reason this program seems to be heading ‘in decline’ as you wrote a few months back? It’s either talent or coaching right? Either they’re picking the 5 star kids who aren’t playmakers or not coaching them.

Right now, Bowl games are the least of either of these two teams worries. UGA should be focusing on Kentucky, and GA Tech should be resting up before they start prepping up for their game against the Bulldogs.

Have no doubt about it; Paul Johnson has his Georgia Tech team focused on Georgia, and Georgia alone – no ACC Championship; no Bowl game that follows the ACC Championship.

If Mark Richt and his Georgia Bulldogs choose to otherwise, that will be perfectly fine to Coach Johnson.

Uh oh…a night game…just great. Plenty of time for the “scum” that make up a small but undeniable part of the UGA fanbase to get liqoured up and abusive.

Last year I almost had to draw down on a group of drunk young “Dawgs” who threatened my 75 year old parents and vandalized their Mercedes while sitting in traffic after the game, apparently because they had a GT bumpersticker on their automobile. Athens Police would not arrest them. We were able to get names and the kids parents paid for the repairs to the vehicle. A night in jail might have taught them a little more in the long run.

Reality is tough to face Superdoggie….get used to it. Rivalries go in cycles and the next few years should go Tech’s way. Its not the end of the world to not be the top program in the state every year. The younger UGA fans who got on the bandwagon the past few years of Richt have been spoiled into thinking that. Regardless of what UGA wil or won’t do against Tech, I would like to see UGA play Clemson in the Peach Bowl. I think that would be a good barometer on how UGA will look next year. I would rather play a clemson than an E. Car team in a lower bowl.

As for Tech and UGA, My mind is saying a usual close hard fought game with Tech winning by dominating the T.O.P and controling our DL. What that says is that the UGA LBs and Safeties need to wrap up an tackle in the open field. UGA will score points on Tech if they avoid the myriad of illegal procedure penalties that seem to plague Boling and the OL. I am looking Tech 38/UGA 34, but with this rivalry, anything can happen.

I hate to admit it, but the Bugs will have about 400+ yards against our horrible D. So with a loss at Tech and a sqeaker over UK, the Dawgs will wind up in the Music City Bowl. That sucks, but at least Willie might be canned after the Tech game. Come to think of it, if Tech wins out – or loses just one more, their coach is off to ND. That might be worth it in the long run. Trash talking commercials prior to all games

Teams stealing each other’s women at half-time, followed by more trash talk

Crooked Refereees to add to the fun – we’ll just use the SEC crew with no changes

Here’s an example of the promo for the UGA-Tech game….(imagine the money and interest this commercial would generate)

Georgia-Clemson games are the games of Legends. If you ask a Clemson fan they will of course say they want to play in the Orange Bowl. Well us Dawgs will watch that one on the tube. After Tech thumps Clemson for the second time, they will say Georgia in the Chikin bowl. My Clemson friends, yes I have a few, are eager to play UGA again. Heck after this year, Duke and Wake Forest are probably eager to play UGA. But I digress. The heck with playing a Northern School that has no excitement value. Give me Clemson in the Eat-A-Peach Bowl.

The game against Tech is irrelevant for the bowls. Take care of business Saturday and UGA is in the Outback Bowl in Tampa on January 1. Florida and Bama in the BCS, LSU in the Capital One and that leaves the Outback with the #2 team in the SEC East, Georgia. I know they don’t have to stick to that formula, but the gap between UGA and SCAR will be too great (plus, UGA has the head-to-head win). UT’s loss to Ole Miss (on top of the felonies) has them way too far back to jump all the way to Tampa.

If UGA doesn’t beat the Cats Saturday, they go to Nashville. The Chick-fil-A Bowl was “saddled” with a local team last year and they’ll need to sell some hotel rooms this year. No way they leave empty hotel rooms 2 years in a row.

David Hale Bowl Odd’s for Georgia

Capital One Bowl
Details: Jan. 1, 1 p.m., Orlando, Fla., vs. Big Ten #2, ABC
Prediction: Ole Miss vs. Penn State
Chances for UGA: 1 percent. Anything’s possible, but essentially UGA would have to win out, LSU would have to lose both of its final two and Mississippi State would have to win the Egg Bowl. And even then, it’s doubtful.

Outback Bowl
Details: Jan. 1, 11 a.m., Tampa, Fla., vs. Big Ten #3, ESPN
Prediction: Georgia vs. Wisconsin
Chances for UGA: 40 percent. There’s still plenty left to be decided, and it’s possible a West team could end up here, but the traditional matchup pits the SEC’s second place team in the East here, and right now, that’s Georgia by a good margin. If Georgia wins out there, they’d be a very attractive option for the Outback.

Cotton Bowl
Details: Jan. 2, 2 p.m., Dallas, vs. Big 12, Big 12 #2, FOX
Prediction: LSU vs. Oklahoma State
Chances for UGA: 8 percent. This is almost always a matchup that pits an SEC West team against the Big 12, and this year an LSU-Okie State matchup would be attractive, considering it would pit Les Miles against his old team. Assuming either LSU or Ole Miss went to the Capital One, the Cotton would have the next choice and could theoretically go with Georgia. But since LSU has the tie break in this one, that seems particularly unlikely. But should LSU beat Ole Miss next week, get the Cap One Bowl berth, UGA win out and Mississippi State pull the upset in the Egg Bowl, Georgia may suddenly seem like the most attractive option.

Chick-fil-A Bowl
Details: Dec. 31, 7:30 p.m., Atlanta, vs. ACC #2, ESPN
Prediction: Tennessee vs. Clemson
Chances for UGA: 35 percent. Georgia is currently 1.5 games ahead of the Vols in the SEC standings with two games to play, so unless Georgia blows it this week against Kentucky, the Dawgs will lock up the second spot in the East. But if Tennessee is within a game of Georgia — which means they’d have to beat both Vandy and Kentucky to close out the year — then the Outback could take the Vols based on the Kiffin-related hype and UT’s head-to-head blowout win over Georgia. That would likely drop the Dawgs to the Chick-fil-A, and a UGA-Clemson matchup would probably draw very, very well.

Music City Bowl
Details: Dec. 27, 8:30 p.m., Nashville, Tenn., vs. ACC #6, ESPN
Prediction: Auburn vs. Florida State
Chances for UGA: 15 percent. Georgia’s win over Auburn likely flip-flopped where the two teams were headed. Add to that the likely loss Auburn will face against Alabama in the Iron Bowl, and what looked like a potential Cotton Bowl bid likely pushes the Tigers down a ways. However, if Georgia loses out, the Chick-fil-A could decide Auburn was the hotter hand and take the Tigers, leaving Georgia to return to Nashville. That seems unlikely, however, given the Dawgs’ head-to-head win over the Tigers and the attractive draw Georgia would be playing in Atlanta.

Liberty Bowl
Details: Jan. 2, 5 p.m., Memphis, Tenn., vs. C-USA #1, ESPN
Prediction: Arkansas vs. East Carolina
Chances for UGA: 1 percent. Essentially Georgia would have to drop its final two, Tennessee and Auburn would have to win out and the Dawgs would have to be considered the eighth most attractive SEC team by the bowls. I just don’t see how that happens.

Independence Bowl
Details: Dec. 28, 5 p.m., Shreveport, La., vs. Big 12 #7, ESPN2
Prediction: South Carolina vs. Missouri
Chances for UGA: None. Kentucky could move into this spot with an upset of Georgia this week, but South Carolina may still seem like the more attractive option.

PapaJohns.com Bowl
Details: Jan. 2, 2 p.m., Birmingham, Ala., vs. Big East #5/6, ESPN
Prediction: Kentucky vs. Connecticut
Chances for UGA: None. The Big East needs Connecticut to win two of its final three (at Notre Dame, vs. Syracuse, vs. South Florida) to fulfill its bowl slots. Otherwise Kentucky is looking at a non-BCS conference matchup.

I think a Georgia – Clemson bowl game would be great.

I miss the Georgia – Clemson annual game we used to have for about the third game of the season . It was a great rivalry.

I wish we would drop Tech (too much hatred there) and play Clemson every year at the end of the season for our annual end of season out of conference game.

Clemson fans have a lot more class than Tech people and we would not have to play in that ghetto stadium on North Avenue every other year.

Disappointing season for the Dawgs, but they have the 15th toughest schedule in the country, the teams they’ve lost to are pretty dang good ones, and if they beat KY will be 5-3 in the conference, which will probably tie them with #8 LSU for the 3rd best SEC Conference record. Chicken Bowl could be a longshot, but that would be a great place to play Clemson or Va Tech.

Pitbull

November 17th, 2009

We would be 8-2 rather than 6-4 at this juncture in the season if:

The Big Eight officials had not made two bad calls one of which game OSU the ball with a first down on Georgia’s 2 yard line and the other called back a Georgia put return to the OSU 4 yard line. The Big Eight officials were looking out for their own. And…

The SEC officials did not blow the call in the end zone aagainst Green that gave LSU the ball at close to mid field.

We did get out butts handed to us by the Tennessee thugs (is that a gun in your pocket or are you just glad to see me?) and Florida.

But all teams are sometimes cheated by inept officials (or officials with a favorite team and an agenda other than calling a fair game) and Georgia has had to fight for its 6 wins.

I am proud of those 6 wins and hope they turn into 9. If they play with the same intensity as they did against Auburn the they will have the best 9 win season of any team ever – with the knowledge that it would have been an 11 win season with fair officiating,

If any goo come out of all this, I think it has made Coach Richt a more hard core ( less nice guy) coach and he needed that to compete in the long run in the SEC. And I hope he is UGA’s coach for a very long time.

He is the best thing to happen to Georgia football in a very long time.

I bet you never even earned a college credit and would bet my house you did not get one at UGA. Reality- Well said.

Since this year’s a bust, might as well look to next year:

The good news is that next year we lose 8 starters off of the defense. Bad news is that one of the 8 appears to be Rennie Curran, the heat seeking missile that literally makes a play on every down.

Next year, I’m afraid that our offensive woes may continue as we break in yet another quarterback for AJ Green. Our O-Line should be decent and Ealey appears to be the real deal. Appears as though Samuel becomes a linebacker, Brandon Smith and Brandon Boykin start at corners (where they should be) Rambo in the secondary with Ogletree. DLIne is going to be a huge question mark as we replace Atkins, Weston, and Jeff Owens, not to mention Dewberry and Washington at LB. Not expecting too much but should be a LITTLE better than this year.

Mark, I must be missing something. Should UGA beat KY , we would have the #2 spot in the SEC East , which traditionally means we wind up in the Outback or Citrus Bowl. Assuming UF & AL end up in either the NC or Sugar Bowl, LSU would be next in line for (probably) the Citrus Bowl , and Ole Miss seems a good bet for the Cotton Bowl. If UGA does not go to the Outback Bowl, what SEC or othr conference taem team would take their place ???

UGA will be in a New Years Day game if they beat Kentucky. They would wind up with a better conference record than Tennessee or South Carolina, putting them #2 in SEC East. TECH has built a solid program behind Paul Johnson and everyone in this thread should be excited that we will have some great games to watch in the near future (like last year). I beg of you please do not use the bye week for TECH as an excuse, they are a top ten team for a reason. I would be careful about wanting Clemson if you want to win, Clemson is solid which will require UGA to play a perfect game.

Again, people discount UGA fans because of the sore loser and trashy mentality that makes up SOME of your fan base. Grow up.

P.S. Pick up your beer bottles, the way SOME of your fans treat your campus makes the rest of us cringe with the idea of you coming to ours.

All is not lost. Orson got his #7 and he gets to play with Aaron. Sometimes you just have to be happy with the little things.

Of course the prospect of being demoralized by 12-1 and going to the Orange Bowl shows the vast gulf that now exists.

Really? That passion of the Georgia youth movement is going to take over a very technical, precision Tech football scheme that has been perfected over 10 games? Doubt it. Passion is great. Simply wanting to win badly does nothing. Everyone wants to win badly. Expect Tech to crush Geogia.

There is still too much football to determine the SEC bowl pecking order but here are the possibilties:

BCS-Gators/Tide
Sugar-Gators/Tide
Capital One-LSU/Ole Miss
Cotton-LSU/Ole Miss
Outback-Georgia/Tenn
Chick Fil-A-Georgia/Tenn
Music City-Auburn/SC/Ark
Liberty-Auburn/SC/Ark
Independence-Auburn/SC/Ark
Papa John’s-UK

The Cap One gets the first choice after the BCS. The Cotton has the first choice of any West team not in the BCS and not picked by the Capital One. The Outback has the same deal as the Cotton except they have priority for an East school.

If LSU beat Ole Miss they would likely go to Orlando even if they lose to Arkansas. Ole Miss would likely go to the Cap One if they beat LSU and State.

If UGa beats UK and loses to Tech and the Vols beat Vandy and UK then I believe that the Outback would take UT. The Dawgs would have a better conference record but both would have the same overall record. This would be considered a successful season for UT and thus I believe the bowl would take them instead.

Good post. I didn’t realize that the SEC was going to have so many teams playing in bowl games this year! If we can get Mississippi St to run the table (vs. ARK and Ole Miss), then we would have 11 of 12 teams from the SEC in bowl games. Who’d u thunk it?. After reading all of these blogs, one would think that the SEC is down this year but in reality stronger than ever. ACC will probably have 7 or 8 (if Duke can win one more). Not bad for a non-football conference.

Of all you dawg fans and your stupid excuses. Start talking REASONS. The REASON you are in a bad season is because your coaching staff does not know how to develope talent. The REASON you have lost games is because other coaches know how to develope their talent. The REASON you were picked No. 1 in the country in 2008 was because you had the talent at that time. The REASON you got blown out by Fla. Ala.,and beat by a lesser talented Ga. Tech. team was because you team WAS NOT PREPARIED. And in the Tech game YOU WERE OUT COACHED..

SEC Bowl Tie-Ins
The Southeastern Conference has agreements to send nine of its member institutions to postseason bowl games following the 2008 season. The winner of the SEC Championship Game will automatically participate in the Bowl Championship Series comprised of the Sugar, Rose, Orange and Fiesta Bowls.
The Capital One (2nd), will then make its pick following the BCS selections. The bowl must select the team with the next best overall record or a team within one win of the team with the next best overall record.

The Outback, Chick-fil-A and AT&T Cotton Bowls will work with the conference office to determine picks 3-5. The Cotton Bowl has the first preference of teams from the Western Division and the Outback Bowl has first preference of teams from the Eastern Division. The Cotton or Outback Bowl can select teams outside of its divisional preference, but must not select them before the opposite bowl selects from its divisional preference. The Chick-fil-A Bowl has the selection of preference following the Cotton and Outback Bowls.

In selections 6-7, the AutoZone Liberty and Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowls will make their selections, not in any specific order, but in consultation with the SEC Office. The Bowls will rank available qualified teams in order of preference. If there are no similarities in the order of selection, the bowls will be granted its selection. If the bowls rank the same teams in preference, the team involved in the process would get its preference of which bowl to participate.

The Petro Sun Independence Bowl will receive the eighth selection and the Papajohns.com Bowl will have the ninth selection of available SEC teams.

What is funny is that tech fans assume they will destroy a team they beat on average 2 times a decade, last year they won by three, this from a team that struggles in the ACC, Vandy and Wake both gave tech a game with much less talent than UGA. This game reminds me of 2001 when everyone thought the sky was fallling and UGA spanked Godfrey and the insects.
The ACC ’s record in BCS games reflects the truth… a middle of the road SEC team ( UGA this year) is capable of upsetting one of the top ACC chumps… err…teams.

ACC Champs:

The 2009 Georgia Bulldogs are in a re-building year. A deeper rebuilding than the year than Stafford took over as a freshman. For most of the season, the running game has not been consistant, and the offensive line has been a relative disappointment vs the expectations at the beginning of the year.

The 2009 Yellow Jacket offense is pretty much the polar negative. The run game is devastating. The offensive line–a question mark at the beginning of the season–has been getting whipped into shape despite a complete lack of continuity among the starting five due to injuries. Our “no pass” offense has a wide receiver that has more yards/game than A J Green. (86+ vs. 83+ yards per game.) This offense has been able to lead the team to wins depsite a defense and special teams that has been poor in half of out games.

With an offense that owns time of possession on our side and an offense prone to stalling and turnovers on your side, I think we’ll make the most of our scoring situtation to be able to win the game.

Aside from the game, what I think is most intersting is the NEED withing a significant number of Dawg fans to talk about the past. Super. But look at the here and now. UGA is a team that just achieved bowl eligability by beating a 5-3 Tenn Tech and FBS teams with a combined 21-22 record. Beating UK will basically keep you beating 0.500 teams for the year.

Given that mindset, you should want to play an FSU or a Miami. Ten years ago, they were great, too.

What do they put in the water at GA Tech?

No doubt. He is an excellent, physical down-field blocker. The fact that he can execute those duties at a high-level and then answer the call for the big plays is a testimate to his dedication. He has to stay sharp. He has to keep selling his routes. What he’s doing is impressive on a number of levels–there’s no doubt about that.

Absolutely. One game at a time. If Tech doesn’t learn to play at the head of the pack by taking each game as it comes then it’ll be a sure, quick slide to the middle of the ACC.

tech10 – TCU is impressive. A Ft. Worth story says their DBs are running backs that Texas didn’t even recruit. Now that’s a good coaching job. After their pounding of Utah, they look pretty solid at #4. Depending on how the BCS games finally play out, they could be #2 in the AP at the end, and might even deserve #1.

Delbert,

CFN has projections of GT/Pitt (Orange), Bama/TCU (Sugar), UF/UTx (NC).

If UF vs. UTx is a yawner and TCU takes Bama the way Utah did in the Sugar, I think the AP would want to name TCU as National Champion. Good press, a snub to the BCS, and a show of independence.

Andrew Sherwin (The Dude)

November 17th, 2009

I like the idea, “ramblinwreckce”, but if UF beats Alabama and then beats Texas, TCU could be whoever they play (hopefully not GT in this scenario, but particularly if it’s Alabama’s second loss) 100-0 and get no nods from the AP for a split championship. I think the ideal situation, if you’re not an SEC fan, would be for UF and UA to combine for three losses after the SECCG. That might well set up a particularly fun MNC game that would also be a state championship game… Texas vs TCU.

Some “projections” (astral projection? Seance?) have Ga. Tech vs. TCU. That would be about as tough as it gets for Tech. As I frequently say, if you want to be the best, you’ve got to play the best.

Of course, we know that Tech has a couple of games of importance before any such imaginations.

Just a few thoughts heading into 2 huge Georgia Football weekends.

First, I’ve heard Kentucky Head Coach Rich Brooks has some new wrinkles in store for us this Saturday. While I’ve been applying Oil of Olay around my eyes for years I’ve noticed a few wrinkles of my own and have asked Willy to closely examine the situation and recommend a new plan.

I called a team meeting before the Auburn game. I told them that in spite of our mistakes early in the season we could more than make up for them with a strong finish to the season. Speaking of make up I’ve recently had to adjust mine because my skin broke out before the Tennessee Tech game after I changed to a new blush.

We’ve come back to win 2 big games after a disappointing performance in Jacksonville against Florida. Before the Auburn game I told our boys to go out, give 100 percent and I told them that when they look at themselves in the mirror they would be proud of their achievements. Just don’t ask to borrow my mirror.

Coach Johnson has done a magnificent job over at Tech. He always seems to have an answer for defensive adjustments. I had to make a personal adjustment last Saturday night during the 3rd quarter. It wasn’t caught on TV was it?

The word is that Tech has some surprises waiting in the closet for us in their game plan. Just so you know I a few of my own that I’m going to bring with me when I come out of the closet on November 28th.

And finally its just not the same around Sanford Stadium on Saturdays anymore since Munson left. My favorite memories were his opening remarks when he set the scene with “Get the Picture” until someone broke in to my office and stole my favorite photograph of myself.

Thanks and Go Dogs!

Redandblack80,

I was merely giving strategic advise on how he could improve his argument and cut out the internal contradictions. However, it appears that with much of the company he keeps, content is not an issue.

If you are going to pin your ears back against UF for not having a historical legacy dating more than 25-30 years, the fact that UGA has won 3-4 games in the past twenty years against them is of no-nevermind to you. This year, the most spirited game UF has played was the beating they put on the Dawgs.

While we’re talking history. If you look back to the slide UGA started last year, UGA was 1-3 against teams with a pulse. Kudos for the win against LSU in the swamp, but you lost to UF, Bama, and GT. This year, the trend continues as you are 0-3 against teams with a high-level winning percentage (OSU, UF, and LSU.) Even UT embarassed you. In fact, you haven’t beaten a team with 8 wins all season.

Oh and next year, you will be breaking in a new quarter back, loose your star wr to the nfl, and hope someone steps up at running back. You have quarterback and running back questions as it is now. Add receiver questions and you’ll be in a mode of rebuilding even more than this year.

That’s a historical trend worth discussing.

Then again, I wouldn’t expect to beat Georgia Tech (then or now), but if we can win out, that would put us at an 8-4 regular season, which is pretty much exactly where I thought we’d be.

Georgia is in a retooling year, with a fifth year senior QB who’d gotten to play about as many snaps as I have of Division I football and several young offensive linemen and running backs helping him shoulder the load offensively. I can’t see how people seem to have expected them to be 10-2 and compete for the SEC.

A win over Kentucky and Georgia Tech would put us at 8-4, and the Tech win would be enough to push us (most likely) into a 23-24 spot in the rankings going into the bowl game. IF we can do that, I’m more than satisfied with the way the year’s gone.

Dawg In Tennessee, Glad you care so much about whether Georgia wins a “silly” bowl or not and whether Tech loses. See, when you follow Florida It is ALL about making it to National Championship Games. Under Mark Richt there is very little pressure. 13-1 to Florida will be a bad year. 13-1 in Athens and they are commissioning a statue of Mark in a Missionairy Position in Uganda.

Enjoy!!

Benjamin, you really have set very low goals for the program to be completely satisifed with this season no matter what happens. It’s people like you that prevent things from changing. Winning out = mediocrity and a down year. Is that good enough for you? It’s not for most Dawg fans.

Please—any bowl except that dreadful minor league weedeater bowl in Shreveport–where the Motel 6 is the best hotel in town and the women are so ugly you wouldn’t even take them home half drunk at the bar closing time.

A 6-6 georgia team should turn down a bowl bid. Going to a bowl with only 6 wins is embarrassing—plus, they will probably get beat, giving them a losing record. Tech will likely run the table and finish 13-1—not bad for a rebuilding year, since Gailey didn’t leave much talent.

“ Wes Bunting of NationalFootballPost.com lists Dwyer, a junior, as the best running back on the board and the No. 8 overall NFL prospect. Bunting called Dwyer “a violent runner who exhibits good vision between the tackles and has the initial burst to separate from defenders at the second level.”

There must be some mistake. Dwyer plays in that “gimmick”, “high school”, “triple option” system that no blue chip recruit with aspirations of playing in the NFL would ever consider………………Hahahaha. Some dog nation bloggers on here are wrong about absolutely everything. See you azzholes on the 28th and bring all those top 5 recruiting classes with you! LOL.

Eh, Georgia beats tech, Tech wins the ACC, Tech could go on the beat Iowa, making them 12-2 and a BCS winner, while UGA *could* possibly lose to Texas A&M
