This was last year. It won't be much different in 2009. (AJC photo by Pouya Dianat)
Georgia Tech has played 11 games, Georgia 10. And I’ve seen nothing to make me change my mind. When they meet two days after Thanksgiving, Tech will win again.
Tech has been good all season. It had a bad Thursday night in Miami, but that’s the only time the Jackets haven’t played well on offense. (Defense is another matter.) The Jackets are going to score points on Georgia, a lot of points. Maybe not 45 again, but close to it.
I don’t see Georgia’s defense being able to get off the field. Key numbers: Tech is 19th nationally in time of possession; Georgia is 90th. Tech will move and keep moving, and Georgia doesn’t have Matthew Stafford and Knowshon Moreno to counter this time. And it might not have A.J. Green.
Neither side can stop the pass. Georgia is 84th in pass efficiency defense, Tech 95th. But the Jackets will have the best pass rusher on the field in Derrick Morgan, and Georgia will, as we know, turn the ball over under duress. I don’t see Georgia stopping Tech’s offense, and I don’t see Joe Cox and Co. being able to respond over four quarters.
Georgia has had some inspired moments this season, but Tech has had an inspired season. I was impressed by Georgia against Auburn, but I’ve been impressed by the Jackets for nearly three months. It will be close for a half, and then it won’t be so close. Tech 42, Georgia 27.

After the two week layoff, Tech may be a little sloppy in the first half against UGA, but their fresh legs will carry them through the third and fourth quarters. UGA will be worn down by then, and the final score will not be close.

Does “flash in the pan” seem appropriate? Tech has done a good job of taking a gimmick offense and winning for a couple of years. Just like the wishbone, spread, and other initially puzzling offenses, the college football world will figure out a way to neutralize that offense and Johnson will be sucking bilge water trying to overcome fast defensive players who will meet his backs in their own backyard. Have the dawgs figured this out yet like LSU did? I’m afraid Willie will let it happen again. But Willie isn’t the only problem.

Couple problems with your theory there Loran, Whatayagot?, #1 nobody has figured out the spread, just ask Florida, and the wishbone isn’t an offense, its a formation. You can’t really figure out a formation. #2 LSU figured out that if you have NFL quality DTs that you can push back the middle and mess up the mesh point, however, they still didn’t quite shut down Tech. #3 The “gimmick” offense that Tech is using has been around for a long time. It was used by Hawaii, Georgia Southern, and Navy, all through schools did very well with it. Before you call something a “flash in the pan”, make sure you know what you’re talking about

Yes, Tech has been impressive all season against a weak schedule when UGA has 3 of 4 losses to teams that were in the Top 10 when they played them. Also, this UGA team is a completely different team now than what they were during the first half against Auburn. That was a season changing halftime speech by Mark Richt. I wish I was in there but I bet he basically told everyone there scholarship was on the line since there jobs were on the line. Richt will out coach Paul Johnson and pull off the victory.

Seeking to counter the “they’re a second-half team” argument, Tech scores 3 TDs in the 1st QTR and Cox gets pulled by halftime for throwing 3 picks…Sorry guys, but this one ain’t gonna be close.
The TRUE GT and TRUE UGAG teams both show up for all 4 QTRs…CPJ has third stringers in before the 4th QTR starts. This will be a HIGH point for GT Football just as much as a FALL OFF THE CLIFF for the butt-sniffers. 52-10 GT as UGAG fans call for Willie M. to be fired immediately, blame the Refs for bad calls that “cost them the game” and simply disappear from AJC Sports Blogs for some strange reason. Tech, you really could’ve capitalized on a golden opportunity. Instead, you squeek by teams like Clemson and Wake Forest while your coach makes inflamitory statements on air while getting dusted by a mediocre Miami team. You continuosly go with uniform colors and schemes that nobody wants to wear, much less buy. It’s just a shame you’ve wasted the best season your program will see in a long time.
You might win the ACC by default, much like Va. Tech has done for most of this decade.
Sadly, you overlook these things so as to beat your chests and gloat. The national media couldn’t care less about your team. Do you notice the difference when you think about all of the love and prestige FSU got for running roughshod through the ACC of the 90’s?
The differences are that FSU has a large and coherent following all over America, while hardly anone outside of Atlanta notices you. Why do you think that is? Big brother of the state indeed.
Even when UGA is struggling, the get the lion’s share of prime time media coverage.
I think you all are under-estimating the power of vengeance…

Hawksfan30, you lost all credibility when you said Richt was going to outcoach Paul Johnson. Richt is a motivator. He sets up the gameplan in the week before the game, and motivates his team during gameday. Paul Johnson is one of the best gameday coaches there is, he sees what a defense is doing to stop him, and he calls his plays around that. Why do you think Tech doesn’t pass much, not because they can’t, but bc they don’t need to.

Gravy Train, it’s amazing to me that you can work so hard to still find fault in the great season we’re having…not ONE thing you just mentioned was relevant to football…football is played on the field…and on the field we are better than you…by a lot…comparing the attention we get in our first break out year with the attention fsu got for a decade of dominance is flat out retarded…if we “run roughshod” through the acc for the next 5-10 years we will certainly get the press they got…just like any team would…does this mean UGA doesn’t have a coherent following either since all ya’ll can talk aout is the past and off-field issues?…i have yet to hear ONE thing from any UGA fan that relates to how uga might possible succeed in this game…(you know, like matchups and talent levels and speed and play-making, the things we “incoherent” fans pay attention to)…sorry if i’m not “coherent” as a fan, but i think YOU are an idiot…

So why do sports fans (and sportswriters) feel the urge to impress the world with there soothsaying skills by predicting a score or a winner for an athletic contest and do so with such phony certainty and assinine reasons for this phony certainty. For a person who relies upon reason and rational thought, such a contrived act, seems lame. It is not removed at all from the insensibility of superstitious beliefs, just as ridiculous. It would be safe only to believe that there will be a winner.(and even at that not safe enough should a hurricane strike just before gametime. It might be safe to say that the team with the fewest penalties and dropped passes, the most favorable calls by the officials will likely win the game. Actually, even habits and history cannot overcome the real events that will transpire and nobody knows what that will be and therefore nobody knows who will win. If statistics were a reliable indicator, and they are not, then Ga Tech could be predicted to win. If the numerical advantage of fan opinion were a reliable factor, UGA would win; it is not. The team that wins will be the team that plays best for the majority of the game and whom luck visits most favorably. The guessing is wild fun only. Knowing this and not being fooled by the grandeur delusions that I couldn’t possibly be wrong, I am going to wildly predict just for fun that the Georgia Bulldogs will win on November 28th. I could be wrong. I fear that I am not. But to be sure, it’s just a fun guess!! Statistics and recent history favor Mark’s prediction, reality doesn’t give a damned and is completely unpredictable.

I believe that the offense will play well against Tech. In our last 4 games UGA’s running game has finally shown up, now if only Richt would give most of the snaps to Ealey then we’ll be set. Even if Green isn’t back for the Tech game, i believe that our other receivers can step up like they did in the AU game, and i believe that AU has a much better defense than Tech does.
Just remember this Dawg and Tech fans alike, last year UGA’s game plan actually worked against Tech in the 1st half, score would have been 28-6 UGA. However in that 2nd half we suddenly forgot how to tackle, leading to the 26 point 3rd qtr.
So it is possible for Willie Martinez of all people to slow Tech down, so long as we tackle like we did in the AU game.

Take Georgia and 50 points. Remember who’s coaching Georgia’s D. Ain’t no way Willie is smart enough to come up with an answer to Tech’s option. This will be Willie’s swan song and it won’t be pretty. Georgia Tech 42 – Georgia 14 and CMR will say Georgia played a pretty good game…. the penalities, lack of turnover and failure to execute continued to be a problem. His response, “we shot ourselves in the foot again”. It ain’t going to be pretty. I’ll be glad when the season is over. It has turned my stomach to see Willie and Bobo take the Georgia program down the drain. If CMR don’t clean house he should be put on notice that he only has one more year to straighten things out. Damon Evans and Michael Adams will soon tire of CMR’s spin, excuses and protecting his friends. Loss of revenue will be the greatest motivation for Georgia Athletics. They didn’t get my $5,000 donation this year to pay for me sitting and enduring a half hearted effort in most games. I’m sorry but I’ll put it bluntly …. Georgia stinks and most of the problem falls on the shoulders of inadequate coaches including CMR.

This Tech grad sees it differently. Tech, despite blubber-gutted CPJ’s exhortations to the contrary, will be lazy, looking forward to its eventual heartbreaking loss in the ACC championship game. Georgia is fired up after a disappointing season, and a breather against Kentucky — which is actually better than a bye week. Tech will falter late, and the Bulldogs will pull off the frsutrating upset, 21-17.

Mark, and your technies who have given Georgia the Little Big Horn treatment and think that you have omitted a couple of factors. Yes, we have lost our best player on the team most likely for the year. But, this could be a net positve in the long run. Teams many times lean on their superstars to carry them during the season and therefore don’t focus well or go all out. This disjointed team has displayed this personality all year. With Rambo going out as well there will be added incentive to put their game on the line. Another factor; you know what they say about a cornered dog. There is definitely a Dawg cornered and his name is CWM. He may abandon altogether the “soft not bend” defensive strategy all together and bring the house all the time and therefore our defense stiffens up for the rest of the season. If Cox can stay away from turnovers this team will be all Tech can handle. Watch and see. Go Dawgssss!!!

As a life-long GT fan, I’ve seen enough of these annual games to know that this one will be close, as most of them have been. I say ‘most’ because UGA’s 51-7 victory during Gailey’s 1st season should be the first film that CPJ watches to ensure that this GT team doesn’t self-implode like it did in that game. Both GT and UGA know the history of this matchup and each will bring plenty of fuel for a full 60-minute battle. Both teams always do. I can’t wait to see what happens! GO JACKETS!!

I find it very interesting to hear from all you dawgies this morning. Nothing about how you have the players or the coaches to win but only how high and might the yellow jackets are. All you know about the yellow jackets is what you read from these blogs. Eleven games are over and one goal has been accomplished, coastal division champs. Goal #2 is on the horizon, beat UGA. That is all that concerns the Jackets now. When that is accomplished it will be the ACC Championship game and when finished with that it will be the bowl game. What you dawgies cannot get used to is the fact that this team does not look past that next game. We have the week off to rest some very tired players. This team will be focused and will play well. We are more talented than Tenn Tech and Auburn. You will have to play a lot better than you have been playing to win. I would never predict a score because it could go as the Wake game, overtime or it could go like the NC, Va., or Duke game. I love to see your comments dawgies because it makes our program relevant and I can hear the resolve in your post, you are not that good this year and we are. Live with it.

Remember back in the day when prognosticators made predictions a day or two before the game ? But then again, those people weren’t trying to stir the pot so much as objectively report. Bark…Errr.. Mark is trying to fire up the UGA base with some early motivation. Mark has been very complimentary of the Jackets this year. I’m still not convinced that he is convinced. Too much red and black mushy mush in your past MB. BTW, I’m sure that picture of the ‘hedge in teeth’ is already part of the UGA bulletin board material. Nice of you to make sure though.
It’s almost two weeks away and a lot can happen in two weeks even when one team has an off week. Since Bradley is stirring the kettle early, this game IS likely to be another shoot out. I think the off week helps Tech more this year than it did UGA last. Too many ball carriers from too many angles. Tech handles the Dawgs and gets ready for an improved Clemson team that was very hard to handle the first go ’round.

Whoever prepares for them in the bowl game will have several weeks to prepare just like LSU did last year and regardless what Jacketit states, LSU did shut them down that night and made their offense look very high schoolish. Miami had 10 days to prepare and did the same. Another thing, to mention Hawaii’s and Fla’s offense if the same breath as GT’s is laughable. They are nowhere near the same. Frankly I don’t think Tech can get by Clemson a second time. The Tigers only had 5 days to prepare for them and except for the big plays at the beginning of the game. Tech couldn’t do anything with them. Tech might eat UGA in a couple of weeks but I predict they will lose in the ACC Championship game and the bowl game that follows.

lowcountrybulldawg….I don’t know how you can be motivated for the last game of the season when you have not been motivated all season long. Has everyone forgotten; we play UK next not GT!

If the Wake game refs show up at BDS, Paddy’s point may be clearer.
I’m sure the appeals case against chop blocking is already being built by CMR and Co. Beamer has made his whine and remember Bud Foster, according to his lover Bob Davie, spent his spring in Athens scheming with the Dawgs against the GT TO. Nevermind though…this offense is now clicking on cylinders nobody knew it had.

Whatever happens UGA will help GT sellout a home game for once this year.GT will most likely win, but it may be closer than you think. But GT will always suck.

Speaking as a Georgia fan, Spike, I don’t think Coach Johnson lets them be worried about anything. One thing I have to admit as a fan of the Dawgs is that I respect Tech very much for how well they’re prepared every week.
That said, Bradley, this Georgia team might be peaking a little. IF we blow through Kentucky — and we should — next week, you just know the Dawgs are going to be amped up on the possibility to close strong with a win over Tech and a bowl victory. I am with you on the Tech victory; I’m not sure it’s going to be as convincing as you seem to believe, though.
Tech wins by less than a touchdown.

“5th year senior Joe Cox gives us a great opportunity to win an SEC championship this year. Cox is so talented, we really have no need for a back-up quarterback except for returning punts. Plus the icing on the cake is our defense coached by Willie, he will have the defense prepared every week for victory.”

Tech has finally reached their bye week and should get everyone rested and healed just in time for this game, and more importantly, the ACC Championship Game.

Snellville Jacket: I’m glad you brought that out about A.J. Green being the second coming. Our #8 is having a better year than him and I am tired of hearing that AJ is the best receiver in the country.ESPN sux. They gave more coverage of NC beating Miami (meaningless, really) than Tech winning the Coastal Division.

The mighty, mighty Georgia Bulldogs. One championship in over 100 years of playing football. Your program is irrelevant. Tech has four championships. The best player in the game is awarded a trophy named after a Tech coach. The best coach in the game is awarded a trophy named after a Tech coach. ESPN declared Tech’s fight song the best in college football.
The only thing Georgia is known for is coming out in butt ugly uniforms to try an inspire a typically mediocre football team. Another Tech win will put you further back into your rightful meaningless position in the world of college football.

Mark Bradley is the Willie Martinez of journalism. Will he every write something that is substantive? Something that is not negative? GT- let’s not forget the home OT win over Wake Forest in their last home game. (Will probably see another “puff-piece” from Bradley this week.)

This is going to be a sweet, sweet victory for the Dawgs. I have never been so excited about beating Tech…UGA is a the 4th best team in the SEC…TECH would not make the top 7. UGA is hungry and nothing will be more motivating to them than to ruin TECH’s season. Get ready for the crying techies.

I’m not looking forward to this one. Tech can have these two years of dominance. I’m looking forward to next year when we have a real DC, and a little more imagination on offense.

I believe Tech’s off week will be the deciding factor in the georgia game. And I’ve been right about both team’s seasons since AUGUST! We will do more with ours than georgia did with theirs (way to prepare for Florida-LOL).
Not only do our players and coaches out perform georgia’s, our athletic director does as well!

If UGA really wants to improve their odds of catching up to CPJ’s offense, they need to start scheduling at least one academy each year (Navy, Air Force or Army) in order to get in some extra practice against the spread option. Wake has played Navy twice in the past 9 months, which greatly helped their ability to slow down (not stop) the GT offense.

As both a Georgia fan and a sports fan in general, man, I’ve learned that comments like this tend to come back and haunt a fellow. I’m just sayin’…
Tech’s the better football team and has had a better season, without question. But this is a HUGE rivalry, and Georgia, aside from last season, has pretty much owned it in recent years. Coach Richt and his boys had this game circled the day after our loss last year, and will be looking for revenge.
We’ll see how it turns out, but I’m not sure Tech fans should be so cocksure on this one. I can understand and appreciate the giddiness you guys must be feeling because of your year — you have every right to be excited, as your program is a pretty exciting one without Chan Gailey at the helm — but this game means a lot to a school that hasn’t lost but four games since 1990 to the Ramblin’ Wreck…

To War Jacket: You should check out John Heisman’s coaching resume before speaking. Also, what is your team record against Georgia the last 10, 20, 30 years? You also miss a Georgia title in the mid ’40’s. It was similoar in nature to your shared title in ‘90. I believeit was the last time the UPI, which no one recognized as the official tilte (AP was) even bothered to name a winner.
You are likea lot of fans, a lot of smoke but little knowledge of the subject.
