Here at Falcons HQ, thinking about running backs

It didn't look good when Michael Turner went down Sunday, did it? (AP photo)

It didn't look very good when Michael Turner went down Sunday, did it? (AP photo)

Flowery Branch — Hanging around the Falcons, waiting for Mike Smith’s 3 p.m. press briefing, and I figured I’d pass along a couple of nuggets  in the interim.

First, The Falcons are not going to pursue Larry Johnson to fill a need at running back. “I had a bunch of text messages about that last night,” Thomas Dimitroff said, smiling.

And his response to those? “Absolutely not.”

Two things about that: Johnson, who just got bounced out of Kansas City for ripping his coach and making insenitive Tweets via Twitter, is the antithesis of what the Falcons want in a player. Even if the Falcons were down to no running backs, Johnson wouldn’t be the man they’d call.

And now the other thing: The Falcons are acting as if they don’t believe Michael Turner will be out long. There has been no official prognosis announced, but they’re mindful he had a high ankle sprain earlier in his career and seemed to heal expeditiously.

Again, Smith figures to have more details, but if I had to guess I’d say the Falcons are thinking Turner will be out two or three weeks, as opposed to a month or more. Again, though, let me emphasize that’s me speculating.

Back later with more. Anybody want anything from Chick-fil-A?

Snelling played well enough for Falcons to win. Shank a pot a muss Elam should have made the field goal regardless, it was a chip shot. This is the second game, the first one he can thank the offense for pulling him out. Where is the pass rush???

OK… Matt Ryan needs to stay in the pocket…. he’s running scared…. Snelling did a good job filling in but Norwood needs to suck it up and get back in there. The 2009 draft is looking like a bust overall. We are all seeing Elam’s age is showing and what Coach smith thinking when he went for 2 ? This is just one of those flat weeks where not much went well. Can’t wait for Sunday to see how our season will be evaluated.

This week is a must win if we have any chance at the play-offs.

If Norwood comes back next week, I think he and Snelling might get us through. I know one thing, Matty “Put Away the Annointing Oil” Ryan looks gun shy. Even when there is no pressure, he looks jittery in the pocket. Case in point, the last interception he threw. Instead following through on the pass going forward, as so as the ball left his hands, he immediately turned his back on the rush, in an effort to protect himself. I’ve seen Phillip Rivers make that throw and get hit in the chops afterwards. This guy is scared!!

It appeared to me that the missed kick should be on Michael Koenen. It looked like Elam not once, but twice felt like the ball was about to be snapped and started his motion to kick. By the time the snap came he was off of his kicking motion and it certainly looked like it when he got to the ball. I don’t blame Elam for that one.

The Team needs a big, wide body defensive tackle. When they had Grady Jackson last year, he took up two offensive linemen, as a result it left Johh Abraham one on one with the Left Tackle. This year, they don’t have a big body inside. Thomas Johnson isn’t cutting it at that position. Might as well go out & sign a 325 lbs lineman to help out against the run & help freeup the linebackers & John Abraham at LE. And they should have signed Chris McAllister, formerly of the Baltimore Ravens to be their LCB instead of going after Tye Hill. Brent Grimes is too small to paly against receivers that are “6 3″ or taller. They still have time, but its getting late in the season to consider these moves.

Returned from Charlotte last night. Done with road games for a while after visiting Dallas too. Both game we fell behind a couple of scores early. Pretty embarrassing.

Ask if theres any chance Koenen will go back to being “triple threat” and kick field goals too. He has been showing off the leg on kickoffs, and might be ready for another shot. At this point, Elam cant be counted on. He doesnt have the leg for the long ones anymore, and his short ones are erratic.

Probably no nice way to ask Mark- but I would like to see someone hint that cutting Stecker yesterday was a mistake. They cut him so they could add Bergeron- I suppose because of the WR injury issues. This team seldom has more than 2 WR’s on the field with all the 2 TE sets and bunch formations. Yesterday, Stecker would have been useful as Snelling looked tired in the 4th trying to carry the load. I would bet if they had that to do all over again, it would have been different. And it doesnt exactly require hindsight— 3rd string RB is much more important to this team than 4th string WR…especially with Gonzalez being out wide sometimes.

Best rookie qb ever? :)

TOLD YOU….TOLD YOU…TOLD YOU….

“DUMP THE CHUMP”

The league was so “anti-Vick” that they tried to build up this JOKE. I knew this offense was so simple, with an All Pro Back, that even Joey Harrington could have won with it.

When you spend 5 years in college and your senior year you throw 22 picks and can’t win the freakin A.C.C. Title in 5 years – just how are you going to make it in the NFL.

The league hated Vick so much, that famed this CHOKE the next coming of Peyton Manning. Well we saw what Peyton did to the Patriots and we saw what Carolina did to the CHOKE – Stop the stupid comparisons. This guy belongs in college and Art Blank is pissed at Smitty, Dimitroff and the non paying anti Vick fans.

I guarantee you, Art will be phoning Philly in the off season and you can fill in the blanks on that conversation.

The “New Face” experiment failed BIG TIME :)

Like I said after draft day – the CHUMP is a bust and should have drafted Flacco.

Vick’s legacy cannot be duplicated, whether you like it or not. He put this sorry franchise on the map and now the CHOKE is burning the map and the Falcons are so far off the radar of winning a playoff game, it is a joke.

You can’t send a boy to do a man’s job – sorry guys :)

November 16th, 2009
2:24 pm

“2-3 in those games not bad.” —- Excuse me but I don’t accept a losing record and no one at Flowery Branch should either.

If Elam makes that kick I think we have a different outcome and everyone would be talking about Ryan’s second half performance and how he has gotten his groove back but Elam didn’t and Ryan went on to throw another pick. No need to panic but….

Please, for once and for all: Stop Making Excuses because our QB is playing poorly and has been for five games now. Its not the offensive lines fault, its not the running backs fault, its not only the coaching staffs fault…I can’t believe how many people on this blog will not simply admit that Ryan is playing badly and has been.

Solution? Well, after you admit who shoulders most of the fault then your coaching staff does everything it can to put him in a better situation. Here’s what needs to happen:
1) No time to go to someone he beat out as a starter so Ryan is still our lead QB.
2) Figure out a way to ramp up the running game and turn Ryan back into a play action QB which is a role he is better in.
3) Figure out a way to get Ryan to stop locking in on Tony G—maybe we sit Tony G in obvious passing situation and go 4 or 5 wide or keep Tony G in to block and go with 4 receivers–anything to get Ryan out of this bad habit
4) More 3-step and 4-step drop with slants and outs to his wide receivers

On the d-side, bring in some free agent DBacks as many as it takes to get some size at corner because Grimes is a target on every play.

Put in some creative blitz packages to get some pressure on the opposing QB because nothing improves the defensive backfield like a strong pass rush

Kick Elam in the butt and tell him to get it into gear or you will bring in some competition and make him earn the right to keep his job.

LET’S GO FALCONS!

Falcons had one running back after Turner went down. They had brought some receiver up to take Jenkins place because he had flue like symptoms Saturday. Jenkins end up being healthy and you have a receiver that is not needed and no running backs besides Snelling who is a situational back. That lost the game for us, put too much pressure on Matt. He is use to having two really good running backs to take some of the pressure off him. Turner was tearing it up when he was healthy yesterday. Carolina is playing better and Atlanta was playing with circumstances. Wonder what would have happen if Snelling went down.

Did Norwood die from his injury?

Looking for a 2-3 game losing streak without any running backs. That will mean that the Falcons will, once again, fail to post back to back winning seasons.

Re Ryan;
1/3 of the time he throws the ball away (maybe smart at times-but I’ll bet he leads the league at throwaways) and is way to comfortable doing so.
1/3 of the time he holds the ball WAY too longway too indecisive-then throws late or gets sacked
1/3 of the time he looks OK though he checks down most of the time to the safest rout available
He is way too tentative and just doesn’t seem to have much confidence anymore.

(”No sense giving the opponent a competitive advantage on Monday.”) He said the Falcons are hopeful Jerious Norwood will play against the Giants but that Jason Snelling will start if Turner can’t play.

What about John Parker Wilson? Did Smitty say he’s going to get increased playing time, since Matt Ryan is playing worse than Joe Cox?

Oh yeah, FIRE MARTINEZ!

Mark,
Any truth to the rumors that they Falcons are trying to sign TJ Duckett, Bryon Hanspard, or George Layne?

I have been hanging out at the Flowery Branch exit, trying to catch TD’s attention when he comes by.
