Market report: Smitty gets fined, but his stock surely rises

This might be the best 15 grand Smitty will ever spend. (AJC photo by Curtis Compton)

As a rule, it’s not good when a head coach gets fined $15,000 for an incident involving another team’s player. But rules, as we know, have exceptions. DeAngelo Hall is an exception marked in yellow Hi-Liter. DeAngelo Hall is the exception to pretty much everything.

It was announced Thursday that Mike Smith must pay 15K for his tete-a-tete with D-Hall. It wasn’t as bad as it might have been — Smitty could have gotten suspended — and in the grand scheme it wasn’t bad at all. Because Mike Smith just stopped being the amiable career assistant who looks vaguely like Steve Martin and became the ultimate players’ coach. And that, in the NFL, is a great thing to be.

The guys in the Falcons’ locker room already loved Smitty. We know this because they play hard for him every blessed week. But now they have even more reason for their ardor. Not only did their coach mix it up in an altercation precipitated by a late hit on the Falcons’ franchise player, but he mixed it up with the man who has become the scourge of Flowery Branch.

D-Hall is a pill. He was a pill when he was a Falcon, and now that he’s gone there’s no call to say, “Well, he might be a jerk but he’s our jerk.

We saw for four seasons how self-engrossed MeAngelo could be — those three penalties on one Carolina drive in 2007 were the express definition of ego excess — and he has since taken his brand of lunacy from coast (to Oakland, where he washed out in half a season, which is impossible to do) to coast (to our nation’s capital). The ESPN.com basketball writer and longtime Redskins fan John Hollinger says of D-Hall: “He’s the only man who can give up a touchdown pass and get penalized for taunting on the same play.”

How do you view Smith in light of the NFL fine?

The Falcons were already ticked — much more than they let on — at D-Hall for claiming that general manager Thomas Dimitroff had lied to him before shipping him out. When the same D-Hall showed up in the middle of the sideline fracas … well, what would any right-thinking man (who’d been hired by Dimitroff) do?

As a rule, it’s not good when your head coach is getting disciplined. But this wasn’t Woody Hayes clocking an unsuspecting Charlie Bauman or Tom Cable jacking his assistant’s jaw. This was some jawing and some shoving. Given that this was D-Hall, that seemed an utterly appropriate response.

And don’t think one man in Smitty’s locker room didn’t love it. The man already has hit all the grace notes that separate a leader from just a boss. Note how he never criticizes a player — not Matt Ryan for throwing an interception, not Michael Turner for fumbling, not Roddy White for dropping a touchdown — without turning it into, “We’ve got to do better.” Note also how he calls players by their first names (and not by an awful Bobby Cox-like nickname). He treats his men like men, and no man can ask for more.

And that $15,000? Well, it sounds like a hefty chunk of money. (More than Redskins LaRon Landry and Albert Haynesworth were docked combined.) But I’m thinking it might not affect the Smith family finances overmuch. I’m thinking there are 53 guys based in Hall County who’d be glad to take up a collection.

Glad he wasn’t suspended. Hoping he saved at least one can of whoopass for the Philly game, just in case the Wildcat qb runs out of bounds.

Smitty,

Your a true leader. Too bad you didn’t knock D-Hall out!! I am actually envious that you got the chance to put your hands on him and not me!

I bet that SC recuit who was told by Lame Kiffin that if he went to SC is glad he went to SC, and not UT, since it now appears that UT recruits end up in far worse circumstances!

And, I guess coaches are held to a higher standard, even as peacemakers, since the original culprits (Landry and Haynesworth) on received $7500 & $5000 fines, and Meangelo nothing!

I’m in for the collection for Mike Smith. Thanks Coach for having your teams back. I don’t understand how the main instigator/classless punk walks away with no disciplinary action. That may have been Smitty’s best move as coach yet.

Just sent this to Roger Goodell at RogerGoodell2@nfl.net

Commissioner Goodell:

I am a Falcon’s fan and I am appalled at the disparity of the punishment handed out in connection with the sideline dispute at the Atlanta Falcons’ game last week. While Coach Smith’s actions in protecting his players on his own sideline might warrant some discipline, including a small fine, to exclude DeAngelo Hall from any discipline is ridiculous. DeAngelo Hall was not involved in the play that began the dispute, DeAngelo Hall had no business entering the Atlanta Falcons sideline (especially after Landry had already walked back on the field) and he certainly had no business running his mouth. DeAngelo Hall is a malcontented, attention-grabbing, over-rated (especially in his own mind), overpaid, less than mediocre football player. The man was bounced from the Raiders for heavens sake. He cannot keep his mouth shut, and now by fining Coach Smith and letting Hall off scot free (I am sure Landry and Haynesworth certainly appreciate that they were fined while Hall was not), you have just given him fodder every time a microphone is put in his face. You might recall on a certain Monday night football game Mr. Hall embarrassed the Falcons, the City of Atlanta and the NFL by putting a standup of Michael Vick on the bench and displaying “Free Mike Vick” on his eye black. Hall is known for being obnoxious and sticking his mouth in where it is not wanted, for getting personal fouls on plays and for ruining locker rooms, and now you have given him free rein to do so. Thanks a lot.

He should not have been fined..what a load of crap. M-Hall should not have been on our sideline, Smitty was trying to keep his players safe from harm and suspension, that is all. And D-Hall wasn’t fined anything? .. Love coach Smitty!

what stock are you referring to? Mike Smith acted like a thug on sunday and embarassed the whole city for no reason.

His stock for stupidity went up. Hi behavior was unacceptable. If he doesn’t apologize asap I will personally tar and feather him.

Apparently D-hall’s recollection of events were right. The moment the coach acted like a chicken and said I can’t remember and I will not talk about it, it was pretty clear he was wrong.

Arthur Blank should fire him immediately for causing that brawl. fire mike smith. the last thing this team needs is more gang bangers. let’s get rid of the chief gang banger himself mike smith.

I don’t care for MeAngelo but Smitty was wrong because even though it was the Falcons sideline, coaches — especially head coaches — are held to a higher standard.

(J: Calm down. Although Smitty got fined because this is the second year in a row he’s been involved in one of these sideline fracas’ and he did walk to Meangelo and grab him (making Smitty appear to be a provocateur), this is a minor thing.)

LET’S GO FALCONS!

How can Haynesworth get fined for coming over to our bench and D Hall get nothing for being right in the middle of our sideline? It makes no sense. Landry had already left the area and was heading back to his huddle. I don’t know how you can justify these fines with Hall not getting anything.

So coach Smith is nothing more than an angry thug who cant control his emotions, hence the fine..Hall was not fined…
If your coach is a hothead who loses his temper how does this bode for the young players on this team. this is the nfl not the streets where you shove and curse because you are upset. Smth is such thuggish tool

Anyone who sticks up for Deangelo Hall and vilifies Mike Smith is pretty delusional.

I mean, Hall’s teammates don’t even like him.

It’s like someone trying to convince you that two plus two equals five. It just doesn’t compute.

Okay $15k is nothing to this man or Blank, but why is he getting fined at all? I mean you just had your QB get smack out of bounds, then Meangelo pops up starting crap. I love that our head coach was in the mix taking care of business. Its just a shame that he didnt go ahead and get fined $50k by smacking Hall upside the head.

Something his momma should have done a long time ago.

hanie enough of your myopic fanaticism. this was all about mike smith. he was standing up for himself. He escalated an incident that the refs had under control and he could have easily been injured.

He tarnished the shield all by himself on Sunday based on his actions. The fact that he was fined the most apparently did not mean anything to you.

Smitty was way out of line. he needs to relax and control his team.
