How cool would it be if Smitty got suspended? Very, I say

Mike Smith calmly asks DeAngelo Hall to take a long walk off a short pier. (AJC photo by Curtis Compton)

Mike Smith calmly asks DeAngelo Hall to take a long walk off a short pier. (AJC photo by Curtis Compton)

I’m not a big fan of mindless violence (or of mindful violence, come to that). I don’t much like movies where things blow up. (I’m more an Ingmar Bergman guy.) That said …

How cool would it be if Mike Smith got suspended for getting into it with DeAngelo Hall?

James Dean cool. Jim Morrison cool. Off-the-charts cool.

The NFL is investigating Sunday’s sideline incident, which got me to thinking. Just imagine the grid cred that would flow from Smith having to sit out one measly game. (Make it against Tampa Bay, though.) He’d be known as the ultimate players’ advocate, the guy willing to square off with the most-disliked guy in the sport. (Perhaps I overstate. There’s still Terrell Owens.)

Smitty would be a hero in his locker room. Heck, he’d be a hero across the whole wide NFL. I mean, who among us has not wanted to lay hands in a harmful way on D-Hall?

Speaking for myself, I’ll confess that D-Hall’s three-penalties-on-one-drive psychodrama against Carolina in 2007 was enough to make me want to put my Bergman movie on pause — “Persona,” I believe it was — and take a poke at him myself. What can I say? The man has that effect on people.

So today I feel happy. (No more Swedish Bergman gloom.) Today I have a new role model:

Two-Fisted Smitty, the one coach willing to get down to the nitty gritty. He’s the man.

Actually, I kind of hope the whole thing blows over quickly so we can focus on the Carolina game without further distractions. I think that one will be a tough rematch against a team fired up after nearly toppling the Saints.

Smitty is a good coach for the Falcons and they play hard for him. Smitty is a lot different than some other coaches/managers in town. He don’t appear to be a nose picker and you don’t hear a lot of, “C’mon kid” comments. Mostly, he appears to be running his team and expecting to win.

it still doesnt take away the fact that Georgia Tech runs a high school offense, is the most overrated team in America, and will have no chance in hell recruiting a QB or WR worth a crap in the near future……

DeAngry Hall could well bounce Couch Smith for a game or two but in the end… it doesn’t subtract from Mike’s ability or devotion or standing. If anything… it really would be cool. Agree Extremus. Plus for me at Carolina is the ‘laugh at the inlaws’ at Thanksgiving and Christmas game – we have to win. They would also be back in the wild-card hunt if they beat us, each then 5-4. I am worried about rumours that Baker is going to be out for awhile (again this year), though his backup SVITEK played well. Him first hurting his foot against Dallas explains alot about how bad the left side was caving in during that game.

Most Falcons coaches in the past was fighting they own players, not somebody on the other team. Van Brocklin and Wages, June Jones and Jeff George. It’s better to be fighting somebody in another color uniform. Besides, Smitty didn’t see nothing but a maroon helmet. Could have been anybody. :-)

This is exactly what Atlanta needed. Mark you actually just hit it right on the ball and im not sure if you realized this. Guys LOVE playing for the braves because Bobby Cox is one of the premier managers, and one of the main factors is that he ALWAYS sticks up for his players no matter what. Every time the braves sign a free agent you hear guys say he is a manager that always sticks up for his players. Mike Smith is the Bobby Cox of the falcons now. Whether you intended to make that point or not, their both the same when it comes to sticking up for their players. Whether or not they will be the same winning wise will remain to be seen. But it will have the same effect as it does with players wanting to play for cox. Premier free agents will WANT to play for Mike Smith because he sticks up for his players!

Smith sticks up for his players – and they are the players that he wants to stick up for. That is the key. No way would Smitty stick up for an arrogant a$$ like MeAngelo – primarily because a guy like that would not be on the team. Mark – your rookie pick is really living up to the hype :)

Good smoke screen with the D Hall situation. The real problem is the leadership of the team. I think Smitty was releasing stress, created by the poor play of his guy that IMPERSONATES the quarterback position.

- Ranked 20th in the NFL in passing

- 4 straight games of decling QB RATINGS

- 4 straight games with at least 1 PICK

- 3 out of 4 last games with less than 200 yards passing

- 135 yards passing in last game

- 68, 66, 46 & 81 QB RATINGS last 4 games

If I was the head coach, that would make me have stress

Wasn’t it you guys saying that Turner was too slow and fat and is the reason for Ryan’s decline?

Well Turner has rushed for 317 yards the last 2 games and ranks 7th in the NFL.

The CHOKE is sinking faster than the Titantic – he ranked a Peyton Like 20th in the NFL. 20th? Is that Turner’s fault?

This “New Face” of the franchise is a JOKE and a failure. How can a team expect to reach the Superbowl if your leader is ranked 20th in the NFL.

But then again, he will still have the support of the fan base, because it’s that old saying “Birds of a feather flock together” and this coop has been raided by the Chicken Hawk

D Hall was just an escape goat for Smitty to take his built up anger on. He couldn’t hit the Franchise qb, but I bet he wants to :)

It’s not D Hall’s fault, his qb can’t grow a pair and stop this downward decline.

Actually I’m wrong sorry folks, but I realize that most of you could care less about color. It’s the character and actions of a man that counts, not the color of his skin. MLK taught me that.

Okay, Jean, explain to me how Mike Smith is a thug?

The first thing you have, proven by YouTube, is Landry and Ryan both walking away from the sideline.

THEN, you have MeAngelo Hall run into the Falcons’ sideline with the express purpose of instigating the situation.

He wasn’t trying to “pull my teammate out,” as he lied. Landry was already gone. Hall was just there to talk a bunch of crap to guys who had enough of his crap two years ago.

Mike Smith ran up to kick that THUG off of his sideline. Hall had no place there. None at all.

What Smith did was well within the rules.

Then you see Hall shove Mike Smith, just like the thug he is, and THAT’s when Smith really goes off, and it takes three Falcons to pull him away before he takes Hall apart.

So again, when exactly did Smith act wrongly?

Methinks you’re looking at this situation through some colored glasses, Ms. Shonay.

As much as I hate that choke character, I also gave Matty a lot of benefit of doubt, but the last 4 weeks are very horrible.

I think he is really choking and even though he has not reached complete bust status, he is nothing close to Mike Vick.

Sorry to admit that.

Choke and those guys live in their Mama’s basement and while she is cooking them dinner they go to the blogs and try to p.o. people. On Sunday they are in front of the TV rooting on Matty Ice and love Mike Smith because the Falcons finally have a coach.

Good call, Mark. As Sherriff Taylor once said of Barbara Eden, “that is definitely not a boy!”

How can anyone knock Smitty for bouncing an opposing player from 10 yards into his on bench area.?

And, oh, Todd-Dacula? I hate to pick out only one thing from your completely incorrect post, but here goes. When have any of us fans had to accept flaws and forgo winning for the sake of the very, very talented Matt Ryan? I only “rememble” doing that when we had Vick at QB. And, by the way, I was a fan of Vick. I did accept his flaws. And they were manifest. Absolutely legendary flaws!
