Josh Nesbitt after scoring the game-winner in overtime. (AJC photo by Johnny Crawford)
The surprise wasn’t that Paul Johnson went for it on fourth-and-inches with Tampa on the line. The surprise was that, for half a minute, it seemed Paul Johnson wasn’t going for it on fourth-and-1 with Tampa on the line.
Down three points in overtime, ball nuzzling the 5: What else would PJ do? “If we can’t get half a yard,” he said, “we don’t deserve to win.”
First Georgia Tech faked everyone out. The Jackets lined up as if to run a play but did the ol’ draw-’em-offside bit to no avail. They called timeout and trotted to the sideline, and your first thought was, “PJ just chickened out.” But PJ doesn’t chicken out. He talks the talk and goes on fourth down.
“If you ask the kids to play to win,” he said, “you’ve got to play to win.”
He’d asked his quarterback what he thought, and Josh Nesbitt, who’s as bold as his coach, said: “I can make it.” And PJ said: “I know you can.” And then Nesbitt did, and one play later he was in the end zone and Tech had climbed a couple of rungs up the BCS standings and drawn within one win of the ACC title game. So you can’t say there was nothing at stake. But PJ’s way is to play to win no matter the consequences, no matter the history.
Four times Tech had gone on fourth down already, and four times it had failed. Nesbitt had fumbled the snap and slipped in the backfield and gotten stopped at the line and thrown a pass Anthony Allen dropped. One more slip and Tech would lose. But this time nobody slipped. This time Nesbitt ducked his head and got the yard.
Tech wobbled Saturday. It started nicely but began to commit penalties at a Georgia-esque rate, and a quick 10-point lead became a 17-10 halftime deficit. It could have been worse, but Dave Wommack’s underwhelming defenders stopped Wake Forest at the end of the first half and then limited the Deacs to one first down over the next 25 minutes.
And then, even after Wake tied it, the D made a stand near the end of regulation to force overtime, and once beyond 60 minutes, PJ and Nesbitt weren’t going to let the Jackets lose. “You just will your way to win,” Johnson would say, and that’s what happened here.
Derrick Morgan had three sacks, all essential. Jonathan Dwyer rushed for 189 yards, 59 coming on Tech’s first snap of the second half when he burst up the middle on a tweaked play for the tying touchdown. (”Something I saw,” said Johnson, the archduke of adjustments.) Wake being Wake, it would never simply slink away into the gathering dusk, but Tech matched the Deacs in heart and trumped them in skill and gall.
Into overtime. Tech held Wake to a field goal and the game was the Jackets’ to win or lose, which meant it was PJ’s and Nesbitt’s, and was there ever any doubt how it would end? Said Johnson: “I don’t think [his players] expected anything else [than going for it on fourth down]. Our defensive guys knew we were going for it.”
Said Dwyer: “Who wouldn’t want to play for a coach like that?”
Before the game, Johnson had given his men an impassioned speech. He told them “not to put the horse before the cart” and ponder what might be waiting down the road. This prompted someone to ask: Doesn’t the horse generally go before the cart?
“Horse before the cart, cart before the horse,” Johnson said. “Maybe that’s why we came out flat.”
No matter. It all worked out in the end. PJ dared and Nesbitt made it work and Tech’s cart and horse, in whichever order you prefer, drew another hundred miles closer to a title game in Tampa.

Good read, Mark. That was one tense moment at the end, but I knew CPJ was determined to end it right then and there. That one set of plays will go really far in estbalishing the confidence to keep winning the rest of the way. In a way, I am glad it wasn’t easy. It will bring everybody back to that reality that it is one game, one set of downs, one play at a time to get to the top. Go Jackets!

The lack of “style points” won’t hurt at all. Iowa, Penn State and Oregon lost. The former lost to Northwestern, the latter lost by double digits, one at home and the other to Stanford. The polls have basically run out of 1 loss teams to put over Georgia Tech. What are they going to do? Leapfrog Utah, Houston or Pitt over Georgia Tech? As if the Big East, Mountain West or Conference USA are tougher than the ACC? When Tech’s only loss is to 7-2 Miami and they have a win over #22 Virginia Tech plus 2 SEC teams out of conference?
Georgia Tech is going to be ranked #7, period. And if Texas and Cincinnati lose, running the table gets them into the national title game. Of course, Texas and Cincinnati won’t both lose, but still …

I know the point spread was big, but style points should be irrelevant. Wake is a decent team with a very good QB and coach. They took Miami to the wire too. They’ve had a bunch of hard luck losses. Plus, our closest one loss competitors – Penn St. and Oregon – both lost.

I was in The United Arab Emerites for Desert Storm 1 when Tech played as passionate a game as this one today. JD, JN, and the O line put the team on their backs and refused to lose! I have officiated high school and college football for the past 10 years. That was one of the most one sided officiated games I have ever witnessed. 3 chop blocks, one of which was legit. The umpire in this game broke a cardinal rule of officiating. If you do not see the entire block, don’t make a call. The last chop call was bogus due to the fact that Bedford initiated the contact above the waist, Howard came in on the double team, Bedford slid down the defender and then the umpire threw the flag. If you start above the waist and slide low, IT’S NOT A FOUL!!. The ACC should look at this carefully. Ever since Beamer started crying, Tech has been over-scrutanized. Now it seems every double team block is a chop.
Great job to our Defense. One quarter we were shakey, but stepped it up when we had to. Kudos to Butler, Griffen, and the new starter at corner, Edwards. Great adjustments this week in practice.
1-0 this week. Get ready for a good Duke team. I think they were looking past UNC today, thinking about the possibilities for next week. Now they have nothing to lose. Get ready Boys.

The SEC schedule ain’t too tough. FL plays 3 cupcakes. TN plays 2, mighty LSU plays 3, SC plays 2, and on and on. That doesn’t count their patsy conference members. We all have to play our conference members, so can’t help that. Everyone gets a tuneup game, Tech’s was JAX State. But to play cupcakes repeatedly, like FL, is pathetic. I’m tired of the whole “the SEC is so tough” line. UGA at least played Ariz State and Okie State. Good for them. They should have had Tenn Tech earlier in their schedule, as it looks bad to beat the snot out of a cupcake this late. But UGA did play a decent schedule. Not as tough as Tech’s, but better than FL, LSU, and the rest of the patsy playing SEC.

Defense wins Championships. If we had the Alabama or Florida Defense, there is absolutely no one, not the Saints or Steelers could beat us. How can anyone, in their sober, realistic minds, think we will not pay dearly on a National stage or in front of the leg humpers at some point, because we cannot pin a team deep with kicks or keep giving up third down conversions.

Nesbitt has a lot of heart and CPJ is always on top of his game – and thank God, because the defense is horrible.
They seem to be able to handle the run well enough, but opposing wide receivers wander at will in the secondary. There was definately not enough pressure applied to Skinner.
Why in the hell didn’t we blitz him to death? Every time we did, we messed them up.
We better blitz Cox because Green will be 10 yards open every time.
By God our corners need to play up and smash the receivers in the mouth – laying off 10 yards is going to get us beat!

There was no question to go for it on 4th and 1. Too much respect for our offense and too much respect for Skinner. The penalties allowed Wake to come back, our D kept us in the game.
I think it should be said that Wake is actually a pretty good team. They should have beaten Miami and would have if not for a fumble and an injured quarterback. I have a lot of respect for Wake and hope they get 6 wins and go to a bowl because I think they belong in a bowl.

The only chance we have against pass happy teams like Duke is to stand directly across the line of scrimmage, smack them in the mouth for the first five yards, meanwhile chasing the QB all over the yard. How many interceptions do we have this year? It is because we put NO pressure on the QB at all.

I’m guessing no matter what UGA does the rest of the way, they play their best game against Tech (not to say they will win… though they could). It’s not often that the Dogs are looking up at Tech, and they are going to have a nice big chip on their shoulder. I always want to beat Tech, but I REALLY want to beat you guys this year- especially if there is even a glimmer of a chance at a BCS title for you.

Game Plan for Puke: Replace two of the larger, slower Linebackers for this game, with two extra Defensive backs. Line them up directly across the Receive and pound them for the first five yards to throw off timing patterns. Blitz them when unexpected. Play Special with Special teams. Execute the Plan and we will pound the Pukers by 50 and be tuned for the leg humpers.

I knew this was going to be difficult.
I had the impression Johnson came out with a game plan to throw. I really felt he gave Grobe to much credit. Tech is not a throwing team.
You are who you are – and Tech is a running team.
The mystery is the defense. You can’t be a top ten team playing defense like this. Something must change in the off season. There is no excuse for not covering all the receivers.

This was a sloppy offensive game at times, our defense was exposed again like the Miami game, but Coach PJ willed us to a win today. I thought he would get gun-shy after 4 missed 4th down plays, but he stuck to his grits and his confidence righted the ship. I’m freaking out over what’s going to happen at the flats in a few years with ‘his players’ on the field. Give him a raise now and lock him up before an SEC team comes knocking at his door. I think a string of ACC championships could help sway him to sign a long-term deal!

I’ve read lots of comments about changes that need to be made in the defense during the off-season, and to some degree, I know it’s true. However, I’m less than convinced that the change is in the coaching staff. Rather, I think it’s simply in the ongoing maturity of a young defensive club … and in the ongoing recruiting of better and better players. We’ve made great progress this season, and there is more to come. Let’s focus on continuing improvement with the people that are already here, and talk less about what needs to happen before next year.

I think CPJ could win the World Series of Poker if he chose to. The man knows when to go all in. Make the 4th down or not, going for it was the right call. It was a much better bet than reshuffling the deck and putting the ball back in Skinner’s hands against our gassed defense. He knew the odds and he knew what was in the pot. When you’ve got the top pair, you don’t muck your hand. You push your chips in and flip your cards over and see what turns up on the river. Great call COACH Johnson.

Wake lost the game because Jim Grobe, when it mattered most late in the 4th quarter, didn’t have the guts to play to win. You never play for OT when you are a bad football team and a huge underdog with a chance to win on the road. The result in OT was a mere formality. Like him or not, Paul Johnson played to win when the opportunity was there.

Too many years of GT losing the late game in the season to put a damper on the whole thing has made alot of us nervous about any game that we don’t have a two score lead. Our ability to run out the clock on teams (never happened with Reggie Ball) led to many killer loses. I am no longer nervous now that we have Coach Johnson. He wills the team to win and Nesbitt, Dwyer and the rest go out and do it. The defense even came through today.
Really, how many times in the past would the past would the opponent taken that last minute and driven down for the winning field goal.

Good win.. but this is the type of game that had me worried. Good QB that could pick apart our offense, and allow them to be within striking distance of our offense. Luckily we pulled it out though. I’m still worried about UGA though… Cox and AJ could pick us apart. We just can’t seem to get much pressure on the QB, asides from D. Morgan. How IRONIC that Grobe “pullled a Gailey” at the end of regulation and PUNTED on 4th down in Tech territory! Remember Gailey’s Gift to Grobe…The 2006 ACC Championship when the MORON PUNTED on 4th down with like 2 min left on the clock and Tech was DOWN BY 3 POINTS?!?!?
MOST BONEHEADED COACHING DECISION IN COLLEGE FREAKIN FOOTBALL HISTORY!!!
So Grobe, suffering from a severe shrivel-up factor, PUNTS TO LOSE!! Something he learned from Chan Gailey…LOL!!! Johnson throws his balls in a wheelbarrow and GOES FOR IT on 4th and 1 with the game on the line, when 4th down had failed 4 times in a row already!
What a BEAUTIFUL DAY! Johnson HAS TO BE ACC Coach of the Year, and SHOULD BE NCAA COACH OF THE YEAR……VOTE, VOTE, VOTE for HIM!!!! He truly desreves it after laying it on the line today — OLD SCHOOL STYLE!

Mark, What a great article, to capture the essence of the game so precisely. I have said for years (about 40), to whoever would listen that ATL has had the privilege of having the greatest sports section in the USA at the AJC. To put this in perspective, I kept a clipping that Daddy Furman wrote about the Falcon’s 2nd 20-17 win over NO for YEARS. It perfectly expressed, in a very short, succinct column the essential moments of that game. AND made you feel PROUD.And for perspective I Think the SH column on Munsen’s heart surgery set the bar. But since it was only being grudgingly mentioned, I felt it needed to be said– Thanks again for capturing the excitement and intensity of the moment with that ability of yours to focus when needed. (No I’m not the stalker. Also, Willie Martinez is such a tool. No wonder the UGA defense sux).

TechMD…One of the reasons Grobe lost in OT is because there was an OT in the first place…With 4th & 12 at the Tech 40 yd line and 1:07 left on the clock, his opportunity to go for the WIN was right then and there! Either give Skinner a chance to pop a receiver on the sidelines for a 1st or go for the 57 yard attempt. He was SPOOKED by the 60 yd miss at the end last week.
It’s not a high percentage play either way and the punt pinned Tech at the 3…But it was also the conservative call. Johnson having the 4th and 1 and NOT kicking the FG to go into another OT period was anything BUT conservative. He rolled the dice and Tech WON…Grobe didn’t roll the dice and LOST. Gailey, at the ACC CG in 2006, was heard to say, “Dice…What the hell are dice? We’re late for our bus ride back to ATL…So PUNT!”

We have to beat Duke at Duke. This Duke team is not the Duke of old – to just roll over and play dead. They have a lot to play for and will put it all out onto the field.
We have to beat UGAY. They will want revenge for last year. They need to make a statement to make up for their horrible seasson. They need a win to go bowling.
We have to win the ACC Championship game. It looks like we will play Clemson again. And, Clemson is now playing like a great team, just destroying FL State.

Great win for the jackets. The D still needs work, but I did think it showed some improvement from last week. Gave Skinner way too much time to throw most of the night. Can’t blame the D-backs when the quarterback gets to roam around for a minute at a time. When we put pressure on, we were successful, and the run D was pretty good.
Some big plays by Dwyer really saved us on offense. I really didn’t think this was one of CPJ’s better games. I saw someone comment early on that it looked like CPJ came out determined to pass the ball, and that was my impression too. We were controlling the game with the dive and pitch. I’m not sure what provoked CPJ to try all the passes, but they nearly cost us the game. Josh and the receivers definitely weren’t sharp tonight
Overall, it was ugly, but a win is a win and I’ll take it. Thanks to the UNC folks today! I’m much more confident about next week knowing that Duke isn’t playing for a shot at a bowl. Let’s hope they come out totally deflated, and lay an egg for us. Also, thumbs up to Navy. Great win over my second least favorite team in the world (although the V Tech is pulling closer).

I apologize. I’m living in a place where a good win for the local team is always looked down upon. I’ll agree that the defense is our Achilles’ heel. At the same time, I (like you) watched the ‘98-00 Jackets, and I think that this offense is better, and the defense is, too. It pretty much went down the way i thought it would at the end. We have all seen Tech try to draw the defense offsides with the hard count. Never really works. But to call the timeout and still go for it takes guts. no way Nesbitt wanted anyone on the field who has a scholarship to kick field goals on the field. that guy is truly something special. Props to him, Dwyer and the rest of the team for all the hard work. Its paying off. Props to WF, they are one hell of team, they played as about as good as you can but just came up short. One game at a time. and Duke is next. Hope the team can see the light at the end of the tunnel, it is as bright as ever all we have to do is chase it like it is running from us and it is ours.

Why in the hell did we pass so much and ineffective in the 2nd QTR? Did CPJ briefly lose his mind?
Wommack, I’m warning you now, if you don’t bump those WR off their routes you will get beat. The underneath passes are eating you up. That Tampa Two coverage will provide mismatches. Cedric should not have been covering a slot receiver. Put your safety over the top watching the QB (Talk with Iowa’s DC). We are getting enough pressure that a QB’s timing would be thrown off if his receiver was 10 yds off course. I hope we switch to a 3-3-5 or a 3-4-4 one day.

As far as not getting pressure on Skinner, we sacked him 3 or 4 times. There was a lot of holding going on by Wake that wasn’t called. They pulled Morgan’s helmet off one time. There are times when your articles fall short of expectations. There have been times when I have called you out on typos and grammatical errors. Tonight you wrote this:
“Wake being Wake, it would never simply slink away into the gathering dusk, but Tech matched the Deacs in heart and trumped them in skill and gall.”
Sir, that is journalism. That use of the English language is why you are paid the bucks you are paid. Kudos, sir, kudos. Arrogant as it is for my to say (not having a literature degree and all), job well done! Thank you. Oh, and THWG!

Tech showed a lot of heart, a great running game and a fair defense but obviously didn’t have their heads in the game. The hold on Hill’s TD run was trumped by the roughing the kicker penalty. Tech gave away 10 points and a lot of momentum with those two bonehead plays.
Watch out Tech, plays like that will kill you against UGA and Clemson in the ACC championship game. That,s assuming that they don’t sleepwalk through the Duke game.

I don’t see why its so gutsy to go for fourth and short. Teams convert that virtually every time. However, the manner with which coach did it was epic. It was beautiful.
On another note, the roughing the passer/kicker penalties have gotten way out of hand. How are you supposed to give a good effort to block a pass or a kick when a flag gets thrown if you even breathe on the guy?

if we keep winning, we will jump Boise; TCU is much less likely considering the teams they play (BYU, Utah, Clemson etc.). Granted we have to win out, and Duke is our biggest concern right now, but in terms of the NC Texas, Cincy, and most likely TCU have to lose for us to play in it. However TCU plays Utah on Sat, Cincy plays WVU Friday and Pitt in Dec, and Texas has Texas A&M and either KState or Nebraska in the Big 12 Championship…the season is by no means over
Gailey Can't Coach

“Normal” 4th and shorts aren’t “so gutsy”…But consider some of the things on the line with this ONE decision:
IF IT FAILS, probably LOSING the Coastal Div Title, No ACC Game in Tampa, No BCS Bowl, No Top 10 finish to the season…And I’m sure there are more. Just having those things on the line with ONE PLAY are certainly worthy of a “gutsy” 4th and 1 call to go for it, instead of the conservative play for the chip shot to tie into another OT period…
What makes this “exceptionally gutsy” is the fact that GT was already ZERO for 4 on 4th down tries during regulation play…I was literally shaking in the stands and about to pass out…The fact that Johnson, Nesbitt & Co kept their composure UNDER EXTREME CIRCUMSTANCES WITH DIRE CONSEQUENCES is just such an AWESOME STATEMENT FOR GT FOOTBALL!!!!
The coach TRUSTING the players and the players TRUSTING the coach…I was PROUD that my 3 young sons could witness that game, that call, that play at BDS yesterday…Life Lessons are learned from experiences exactly like that and they saw something that they can take with them for the rest of their lives! It may not be fighting the enemy oversees or policing the streets, but there was certainly COURAGE and BRAVERY exhibited in that single decision and the resulting play…
It’s the kind of decision that EVERYONE ADMIRES…Other coaches (I’m sure even Grobe), sports writers, players, fans, recruits, etc…And to be willing to suffer the wrath of those same constituents IF IT FAILED is what sets Paul Johnson apart from the rest of the coaching pack!!
It wasn’t just “gutsy”…It was “INSANELY GUTSY”!!!
I mean, did you hear Charlie Weis after today’s loss to Navy…PATHETIC…I’d be surprised if he isn’t FIRED 30 minutes after ND’s final game this season.

The long touchdown run called back because of a real phantom call, preposterous officiating. I know CPJ is going to send these plays to the ACC for review – has to for the Jackets sake. These officials were as bad as that SEC team that got canned.
Clearly CPJ has the biggest COJONES in College Football – Mellon size as my kid told me….

Even if JD had not made the first down or the touch down, I still think it was the correct call by CPJ. A average coach would have kicked the field goal, a great coach goes for the home run. That was a great football game. Great teams find a way to win!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One more hurtle and even if we don’t jump it, what a season it has been for Georgia Tech. I hope CPJ is around for a long time at Tech.

Jacket3, you forgot the worst call of all in the completion and fumble by Wake Forest losing a yard. They reviewed and got it right but you have to wonder how an official can be so bad to make that call in the first place. Overall, one of the worst officiating performances I’ve ever seen. The ACC has got to get a handle on what is or is not a chop block, and while they are at it, they might want to call it on both teams instead of just focusing on GT. Beamer has done exactly what he set out to do and didn’t even get so much as a slap on the wrist from the ACC. They might also want to brush up on holding and let the officials know you can call it when the defensive player is #91 same as you can call it for any other number.
That said, you’ve got to love our coach and its obvious the players love playing for him. You can say he played the odds, but there are still so many things that could have gone wrong on that 4th down play. Just imagine the howls today if it had failed.

Old ‘Jacket, you are wise to be asking about Johnson’s contract. Since Bobby Dodd, any coach that was successful at Tech has left for more prominent programs. I don’t believe that he would sign anything that would limit his options, or penalize him for leaving. I also doubt he would want to leave anytime in the next five years. He has a lot to prove and Tech’s program is best suited for him to prove it.
If he does make it to a BCS bowl game – - and in the future the NC game – - there will be a lot of media hype about his system, etc. There will also be not-so-subtle hints that his style of football can be successful with the “smart” kids. Tech’s football team has the highest SAT scores of any public university. You don’t out-athlete your opponent, you simply out smart and out execute them.
Congratulatins on another victory. Don’t overlook Duke. They can beat you, just like Wake Forest almost did.

I thought the holding call on Thomas and the roughing call on the kicker were legit calls. Bay Bay was pulling the jersey of the defender to keep him from turning as the runner went behind him. On the roughing call, two Tech defenders were in the backfield and the downfield defender bumped into the upfield defender; pushing him into the kicker. It was accidental and due to effort – not a “stupid penalty”, but it cost us 4 points. Had we lost, it was not a game that we could blame on the refs. As it is, we won and the drama at the end was priceless. Wake Forest played well and our offense did not have their best game. Our defense played great against the run and as we have come to expect against the pass. I hope we play better at Duke, but I really enjoy watching GT this year. The FSU shootout, the win over VT and the end of this game will be remembered for years. I hope the rest of the year is as memorable. Go Jackets!

Staying out of the fray, I feel the schedule the rest of the year is going to be tough for Tech to win out. Next week, an away game with improving Duke, followed by a holy war with Georgia, and then another game with Clemson (probably the second best team in the league with their body of work). They may be the best team in the ACC at this time. I don’t see how Tech can keep it up with this many back to back games against tough competition. It has been a good run, and nobody who’s being honest will say that it was expected. I thought 8-9 wins with a shot at beating Georgia was the best the fans could hope for. The idea that PJohnson (and Womack) could push this team to a possible 11-13 win season was too soon without the lines (offense & defense) to support it.

CPJ salary is $2.3M with a 7 seven extension after last year. That doesn’t include incentives which I would assume include BCS and others. He is 2nd only behind Bowden at $2.5M. BTW he would only be ahead of 5 SEC coaches. Mark Richt is $2.8M. He would be 4th highest in Big Tenjust slightly behind RR at $2.5M.
Big Ten Sleeper – nice try but CPJ will be rewarded again at GT for his efforts. Quote from CPJ “I look forward to continue being a part of the Georgia Tech family for years to come”. Not to mention he loves the state of GA and is having great efforts on recruiting.

Some quick Wake Forest post-game notes
Orange, Champs, and Chick-fil-A Bowl officials were present
On Jonathan Dwyer’s TD run, it was his 3rd straight, 5th overall 100 yard game of the year and put him over 1000 yards for the season. He has the 6th most consecutive 100 yard games in GT history. Dwyer’s 195 yards bests last week’s career high (186 yds) set vs Vanderbilt.
Preston Lyons had his 1st TD of his career and his longest carry. It went for 31 yards.
Scott Blair hit the longest FG of his career with his 45 yarder.
Phil Smith and Mario Edwards both made their first career starts.
Steven Sylvester got his 1st career sack.
Derrick Morgan had a career best 3 sacks. That gives him 11.5 this season. That’s 5th best single season in GT history.
GA Tech made 5 changes on special teams. Morgan Burnett, Roddy Jones, Mario Edwards, Quentim Sims, and Julian Burnett all returned.
Josh Nesbitt added 2 TD’s to give him 22 TD’s. That’s 6th best in GT history and the most by a QB. He has 15 TD’s for the season. That’s the second most in a season in history.
Paul Johnson’s win makes him 18-5 for a .783 winning percentage. That’s now highest in GT history edging out John Heisman.
The team rushed for 412 yards. That’s the 3rd time this year going over 400 yards.
The 9-1 start is the best since the won the National Championship in 1990.
GA Tech’s 6 ACC wins is 3rd best since they’ve been in the ACC.
GA Tech has clinched a tie for the Coastal Division.
The Yellow Jacket’s 7 game winning streak is their longest since 2000.

Any one else notice the mighty SEC for the most part everyone played the sisters of the poor yesterday. Only three in conference games.
The officiating in the game last night left a lot to be asked for. There was a completed pass where the Wake defender was on the back of the tech recevier. No flag even though the pass was completed. This was not the usual crew that works a Georgia Tach Game.
It is very hard for a center to get two chop block penalties usually the guard has already engaged the defender.
Are we misisng Taylor Cooper more than we wnat to admit? Seems very little pass rush against a team that could only pass, and was there ever a blitz?

I had one last point I’d like to make about the Jackets before I go. I just wanted to remind everyone that the team has been going non-stop since August – no breaks like most teams that have been playing.
The boys are coming off of a 5 game stretch in October where they had 5 wins in 5 different states, and they’re a bit tired and nicked up. The fact that they pulled this game out; especially against a team that should have beat Miami last week (they would have beat Miami had Skinner not gotten knocked out with a concussion), well, I think that speaks volumes about the inner strength of this year’s team.
If they can get by Duke next week, they’ll FINALLY have a week off before they have to play Georgia. The guys really need to get some rest and start getting healed.

#1 GT Fan … you apparently don’t keep up with other teams. Yesterday Iowa LOST to an unranked team … yet they will probably remain in the top ten. USC lost to an unranked WASHINGTON team earlier in the year, yet remained in the top ten. Last year’s UF team lost to an unranked Ole Miss team … but it didn’t hurt them too badly at the end of the year.
I’ll admit, most teams that LOSE to unranked teams don’t STAY in the top ten … but there is certainly no damage in achieving a close WIN against ANY opponent. Obviously, it would be far less risky to build up a big lead in these games. Still, every win is a good win, regardless of the score or the circumstances.

Hey BOOGER MAN FROM HARTWELL. So you’re dawgie fan AND a clemson fan? Yeah, yeah. I get the “booger” reference now. It’s a bit far fetched but yeah, yeah I get it. You’re referring to how inbreds often have pushed in noses (see Persian cats and inbred bulldogs) and secrete boogers autonomously via oozing. I’ve seen it. The only question is who licks the boogers off your face: OTHER dawgie and Clemson fans? Or do you do it yourself?
But on another subject, how does the dawgie half of you feel about your miserable team’s slide into Baylor-ville?

I am so proud of how Tech overcame the penalities to keep the game in hand and get a great win. One more comment – Everyone slamming GA Tech’s defense from our Game against Wake Forest. No one seems to remember that the week before, they cranked out 555 yards of offense against Miami, but just a tad over 300 against the Jackets, with a lot aided by second chance opportunities through penalties.
All things considered, the boys on the defensive side of the ball stepped it up a notch. They only gave up 7 points in the second half, not counting the 3 points in overtime; but Wake started out in field goal range, so not giving up a touchdown was another win for the defense in that situation.

As far as TECH-UGA its the biggest game of the year for UGA. After laying eggs on all of their other key games, its the only redemption game they have. Bobo will have several sexy new plays and a bunch of other junk.
For most of us Tech fans, I think, beating UGA is far bigger than winning some Tampa champ game or winning a bowl. Beating UGA last year was far bigger than the Peach bowl. PJ understands this and will be ready. His predecessor just looked at it as another game.
To be clear, Duke is the biggest game of the year because this team deserves to be division champs. After that UGA is the biggest game left. I don’t care if Tech gets a bowl game against, say Texas, UGA is bigger. We have reached the top 10 of the BCS. Beating UGA is the next key achievement unless we have a chance to be #1 which will not happen

What we have is a sub-par coach in CPJ getting accolades galore out of our “fine’ journalist staff (Bradley and Schultz). You two must have CPJ buying ya’ll breakfast on a weekly basis…otherwise I have no clue what ya’ll are seeing through your rose colored glasses. CMR still is the best. Book it.
That’s a good one!!!! HA HA HA…How can you call CMR the best in state when you have 5 star recruits up and down your rotser and you’re barley above .500? That right there shows wait a horrible job CMR has done this year and now you want to call CPJ out. Give me a break. Great teams are suppose to just reload after losing players. Not go down the tubes and play like an inept mediocre team. With what CMR has on the roster he should also be 9-1 not 5-4. UGA plays like the most underprepared team I’ve ever seen. Penalities galore, which CMR just shrugs off. Undisciplined and lack of effort. Just like the late hit on Tebow last week. Don’t go calling out someone until your own guy looks himself in the mirror.

It’s hard to believe but since the FSU game our defense has went from 90th in the country to 53rd. That’s pretty good in my book. With all the injuries and what not going on we still have played a lot better. I was impressed a little with Blair’s kickoffs toady. A lot depper than I’ve seen. He acutally got one to the goal line WAHOO!!!!
Every team has a game like this and I’m proud of our guys. It wasn’t the prettiest one but we did win in the end and that’s all that matters. Like CPJ said they were playing not to lose instead of playing to win. I belive it has to do with all the youthfulness on our team. Let’s face it, Tech hasn’t had this kind of success in a very long time. They did play like they were scared to lose. Maybe now we can just go out and just play from now on. GO JACKETS!!!!!

Other DL’s are going to have to step up and give Morgan some help with the pass rush….The refs were as awful as they looked from the stands. What, exactly, were the replay officials looking at on the Wake sideline “reception” ??? Tech avoiding the trap game by the skin of their teeth. Time to thank the Lord, forget about it, and move on.

How about someone writing an article detailing gt’s chances of getting to the title game. From what I can tell, we need texas to lose, cincy to lose and maybe tcu. What is interesting is tcu. They did beat clemson and va. But so did we. And our schedule is tougher than there’s. SO if we beat clemson again in the acc champ game, what does that say about us and tcu? The old adage of don’t lose late will come into play this season. You reward teams for winning. And if texas loses, there is no way they can put them in the title game. Especially since their loss, if it happens will be to a unranked team. I don’t see cincy beating both pitt and wv either. Texas could lose at the end to a&m. If they do, I don’t see how they can put them back in the title game even if they win the big 12 cause a&m is a crap 5-4 team. Or if they were to lose the big 12 game, they are done cause you aren’t putting a team that loses it’s conf in the title game. So any loss by texas would knock them out. Boise has no shot unless a lot of teams lose. Need utah to beat tcu just in case.

I am starting to hear/read that Notre Dame is going to make a serious run at Urban and Johnson. Tech will lose to UGA in a few weeks, lose the ACC to Clemson, then lose the only coach that could make something of a sorry program.

Knowing PJ and the coaching staff, there was no way that he was not going for it! There is a hugh difference between telling them to run that final play, and making them come to you, ask to run it, and then guarantee that they would make it! He did just that in getting Josh to commit to making it!! That is coaching!! By making JN to guarantee it, the whole offense then was not going to let him fail! That is why this guy is a great coach! We not only had to beat a game and well coached WF team, we had to overcome a bias officiating crew…seems they were out to make a point about chop blocks (2 of the 3 calls were wrong..watch the film). Also, the crew was spotting our forward progress on many plays a half yard short each time…makes for a larger number of 4th down tries during a game!! And NO, JD is NOT going to get us killed, he is the “horse pulling the cart”.

Wow I love how Dawg fans keep “hearing rumors” about ND.
I think their dream is that ND hires Meyer as HC, Saban as DC and Johnson as OC. UF hires Bobo as a replacement and ALA hires Willie.
What does it say about the mindset of some fans when they want their rivals to lose their coaches so that UGA’s record can improve?

I want PJ to stay forever and think we should do anything necessary to keep him but if he moves on DRAD simply gets R Rodriguez from Michigan. And there are plenty of other good ones to be had. Rodriguez would love, I’m sure, to get out of Mich and Tech’s “high school” offense is very similar to his style.

CPJ isn’t going anywhere. GT is very happy to have him and he loves it here. This is a perfect fit for him. He is committed to the programs he coaches at. He isn’t a flash in the pan coach. He stays around and builds a winner and he will go down as one of if not the best, coaches in GT history. That will be his legacy.

Not just a rumor; As I mentioned previously, Paul Johnson promised his wife and daughter that he wouldn’t even CONSIDER moving until his daughter graduated, and I can assure you, that means he’ll be on the Flats for quite a while, especially with the continual raises the Jacket Faithful will be throwing he, and his staff.
So, keep wishing it were so, but it ain’t going to happen, as much as you keep telling yourself and everyone else whose dumb enough to listen to your garbage.

If our coach was planning to leave,I don’t think he would be recruiting the way he has been. I don’t think he would be telling a recruit to come to come and play for him and then turn his back on them, like 2 of our past coaches did. PJ has more class than that..GO JACKETS TOHWG!!!

GA Tech Insider – as the father of a teenager myself, I know where Johnson is coming from. However, isn’t his daughter 17 or so – meaning she’ll be graduating fronm HS in a few years?
Hopefully she wants to do Aerospace Engineering and hang around for a while.
Heck – I’d like to see Johnson stick around for years, but if he decides to move on in a few years, good luck to him.

CPJ won’t even CONSIDER leaving GT until after he’s won a NC! He keeps telling the kids, “You haven’t done anything yet!” with each win. And although he’s accomplished Big Wins since coming to Tech (mainly breaking losing streaks), he still hasn’t “done anything”, to use his own words. AFTER he wins a few ACC Titles and 1 or 2 National Titles, then I’ll start worrying about the rumors that he’s going to be hired away…Until then, ENJOY!! CPJ can really coach, we are all seeing that first hand. But what he does even better, he stays out of the players way when it is time to win. Uncanny how he can utilize all at his disposal to make his players have the maximum fun and still run thru a wall for him. I believe the recruits are liking what they are seeing out of this man. He is tough, he is fair and he lets them play!

Only 113 days till the Tech beat down in Atlanta. Its posted in the locker room at Georgia…beware Tech fans its gonna hurt so bad you won’t be able to show your faces. Tech always has been and will continue to be a second tier college football program. I’ll bet you that there will be more Dawg fans at Grant Field than Tech fans for the game. Isn’t it amazing that Tech consistently is out recruited by not only Georgia but also Clemson, Tennessee, South Carolina, Auburn and more recently Alabama in its own state? That fact alone should tell you that the Tech program is not thought of very highly throughout the South. Have your childish fun now Tech fans posting on this blog cause after this year’s game Tech will be back in its rightful place….irrelavant in college football!

And you’re telling me I give Georgia bloggers a bad name….stop I’m really laughing hard now. Come see me when you win the ACC…or a BCS game…or sell out your stadium for a home game. Are you kidding me. Tech wasn’t even a consensus NC winner in 1990. The poll that mattered didn’t have Tech #1.You asked if you are supposed to be scared by my rhetoric…..I really don’t care. All I do is state the facts. Just because you Tech fans live in a dream world and interpret them the way that makes you feel better about yourselves is your problem. Believe me your team is not that good. Average at best. Tech will not win the ACC, and definitely WILL NOT beat Georgia. In looking at the Tech schedule…I see Tech losing at least five games and possibly six. I predict that Tech will lose to Georgia by at least 17 points……Tech is a team that actually dropped out of the SEC because they thought they were better than everyone else and where did it get Tech?…relegated to a second tier team in the ACC. When Tech consistently has double digit win seasons, wins the ACC, and plays in meaningful BCS bowl games you’ll be able to pound your chest and tell me and everyone else that will listen how great Tech is until then….the Tech football program is irrelevant!

I coached football for 28 seasons (5 with Woody at OSU). Paul has an offense which nobody understands as well as he and his player do. One week is not enough time for any defense to get really ready for Paul’s spread option and all the adjustments they may have seen on tape. Plus he has others you are going to have to adjust to on the run. It’s unlikely any defense is going to do something Paul and his coaching staff have not seen. Navy been ND last week and gave the Buckeyes all they could handle with the same concept. The Tech players are learning some great lessons from their coach and they extend beyond the White Lines.
