5+1 reasons UGA’s loss was even worse than it seemed

Here's the first of Joe Cox's several interceptions. (AJC photo by Bob Andres)

Here's the first of Joe Cox's several interceptions. (AJC photo by Bob Andres)

1. With Georgia within 14 points and still 10 minutes to  play, some 10,000 Georgia backers  up and left. Think about that. You’ve paid for tickets, parking, food, hotel and  gas/airfare to come watch your team, and your team still has a theoretical chance. (One tipped pass and  it’s a one-score game.) And you have so little faith in your team that you walk out. And your program has won 10 or more games six times in the past seven seasons. This would seem to say, at least to me, that Mark Richt is losing his constituency.

2. When Georgia pulled within 14-10, it did its huddle-up-and-jump-around thing on the sideline, and I typed on the live chat, “I smell a late hit coming.” It came on the kickoff. Michael Gilliard, late hit. It is uncanny how this team cannot play by the rules.

3. Florida scored 41 points without doing anything extraordinary. No Gator rushed for 100 yards. No Gator had 100 yards receiving. Tim Tebow’s longest completion was for 29 yards. Not until the game’s final drive did Florida gain 30 yards on a scrimmage play. And the Gators didn’t throw a fourth-quarter pass (though Tebow was sacked once). And a merciful Urban Meyer had John Brantley take a knee with the ball on the Georgia 20. Think Spurrier would have?

What's the worst loss under Richt?

Loading ... Loading ...

4. Joe Cox was supposed to be a game manager. Instead the fifth-year senior has been wilder than Matthew Stafford was as a freshman. Stafford had 13 interceptions in 2006 and didn’t start every game. Cox has 12 interceptions in eight games. And the second interception Saturday was just sad: Pressured, Cox tried to throw the ball out of bounds but couldn’t sling it far enough. The exact same thing had happened in Knoxville. Which brings us to …

5. Tennessee. It’s coming fast. If Georgia didn’t figure to finish ahead of Florida in 2009, neither did it seem any other SEC East school posed an imminent threat to the Bulldogs’ hold on second place. South Carolina is ensconced as a 7-5 or 8-4 team, and Kentucky and Vandy are Kentucky and Vandy. But Tennessee has now beaten Georgia and South Carolina and has played Florida and Alabama close, and that’s a scary sign. Because if Tennessee in Year 1 under Kiffin can have the same overall record as Georgia in Year 9 under Richt, what happens in 2010?

6. The black helmets. Just embarrassing.

Jerry that aint happenings and you knows it. The players is given access to ladies to service them in Athens and gets the NFL exposures to earn the big bucks. Players just aint appreciate that benefits. All we asking in returns is that Dawgs our men on the field to dominates and win. If the players aint goning to win then ships them out with wavers and bring up the Hargrave men with SEC talents.

Mark Richt MUST stays and he be capabell of chosing his own coaches.

Some of yous seem forgetting that we only won 2 SECs in 20 year and CMR is one that be doning its. Plus Mark Richt is more rightous and Christians than any bodies.

We gots to have the best Christians to converting players while theys at schools. Football and lifes is just like Christiansity and that makes Richts a great coaches.

UGAY has more than its share of thugs. Hence all the unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. Problem is, the thugs don’t play hard-nosed football, they just play late-hit thugball. All they want to do is talk and act thuggish.

I’ve been a UGA fan since birth in 1966. I am embarrassed at the thugishness of our team. CMR will forever be embarrassed at the 2007 celebration penalty. That is his enduring legacy, with uniform gimmicks a close second.

Can we have a coach that wins and is truly classy?

“Tennessee. It’s coming fast”…This choice of words seems to intimate that the Georgia program is still ahead and the Vols are coming up fast from the rear…Dude, Georgia is already in UT’s rearview mirror, with inferior talent…The inferior talent factor won’t last much longer, then what for the Dogs?

Richard Dawson – “UGAY has more than its share of thugs.”

Richards you sounds more like a Techie than a Dawg fan using that languages.

UGA needs more rough players to competes with thugs scum bags at FLA and Bama. Those men play physical and cheap shotting for keeps while UGA boys put tail between legs. We need to put the boys on waver and bring up the Hargraves men to be just as violents in Biblical eye-for-eyes justices against Gaytors and Tide Rollers. It is time to cast out the boys from team to get in Hargraves mens who is doing the Christian things of winning football.

Please stop referring to the helmets as being like “Grambling”. Grambling has a lot more class than UGA and should not be mentioned in the same sentence as the whiney pups. Grambling also has a much better football team.

2 weeks. 2 weeks to prepare new game plans, plays on O and D. Nothing. Same old boring crap, both sides of the ball. No imagination, No new stunts, No chance. 5 wideouts would have been fun. Someone hitting Tebow every down would have been nice. No, we showed ‘em. Third and 15, off tackle run. Nice call “Dumbo”. This program is in serious trouble.

If Richt doesn’t make any changes after this season, then it’s time for him to go also. It’s not a lack of talent. Most of our players were heavily recruited by almost everyone in the SEC. And why did we have black helmets Saturday? A good team doesn’t need gimmicks. But it does need some fire from its coaches.

If any of you bad-breath-ers and pocket playas are taking glee from beating a horrible team like Georgia, then your team must never have had any CONSISTENT success in its history. If your team HAS HAD consistent success and you are still stomping on the red “G” on page 13 of this blog, then you most certainly must have your entire cherry intact and I feel sorry for any potential children/drones that you inadvertantly sire in the dark of night.

Things have gotten really bad when the head coach’s idea of innovation is to change the uniforms. If that’s the best that Richt can come up with, we need a new coach. Granted, that won’t happen until after signing day, although how great is the recruiting going to be for a team that is 4-4 and looking like a program on a long downhill slide?

Not much sense in un-redshirting Murray at this point. Let the season play out with Joe Cox, as unproductive and error-prone as he is.

But I sure would feel better if Richt was gone.

As a Tech Fan looking in Georgia fans should be ashamed. CMR has had on subpar year and a lot of you are ready to hand him over to the lions. Do you not remember Golf? Donavan? What ever there names were? CMR is a great coach and I’m sure he will get it straight. Those of you calling for the young QB have you ever thought that he is just not ready? I’m sure that if in practice he showed signs of being ready he would be playing. As for your Defense Cordinator? I don’t follow him or your defense very much but I do know this the few games i’ve see if you could tackle you would win more games. Nothing wrong with the sceme the players are in the right place but they just don’t make the plays. Is that the DC fault? He can’t tackle for them. He can teach them to tackle but can’t get on the field and do it

Top recruiting can be misleading if you sign JUST offensive team players. We got Aaron Murray AND the Athens/Ocnoee County QB Mettenberg or what ever his name is and Brandon Smith and Marvin Brown and Montrez whats his name D End from Indianna and the TE from MASS and what have they ( besides Smith ) done??? Hmm? See?? THEY WILL TAKE TIME to develop. Meanwhile, we are getting blown out!!!

We need to sign every year, big, strong fast down linemen and line backers but we do not. The jax kid O Tackle Brent Bendict has already SHATTTERED his knee and might not play for two or three years and his is part of the 2010 class.

Alabama signs big, strong running backs, l backers, HUGE linemen and average QBs and we get All World QBs and cannot do a thing with them. The beat goes one. We simply sign too many O players that take time to develop and this year is proof positive of what I am saying here. We do not have any D players to speak of for the future beyond a Rambo and one or two decent D linemen. This fact si why we are hurting. Out supposedly great D linemen and fat slobs and very slow. Real slow they are to the corners.

Fire the entire staff!!!

I can recall Munson saying that ” sugar is raining down” from the fans, about 20-23 years ago at Auburn and now? This year they will be saying “ball pin hammers and bricks are raining down from the fans” during the latter moments of the tech game. Ugly that game will be to wimps, I might add. Terrorists they all are at The Flats AND thugs like Reuben Houston and Joey Hamilton and Tarrant #37, the rapist Frosh safety.

It is gonna get ugly in Athens if WE ( yes, I am a UGA grad ) do not pull the plug on the Richt era. It is time to do it.

The beginning of the end for Mark Richt and company was the 2007 Tennessee game. While the Dogs looked good after the Vandy game the following week the team quit on Mark Richt in that game and he has never gotten them back on the same page as the coaching staff. There was so much promise when Richt came to UGA and it is truly sad to see that the ride is over. The only question now is how long do we as fans have to put up with the debacle that UGA football has become. It certainly won’t be this year and unless UGA only wins a couple next year it will won’t be next year. There are 4 games left this year and at least 12 and probably 24 for a total of 28 more under Mark Richt and then we can move on to brighter things.

CMR should bench the seniors for the rest of the year, so they can work on their studies and future because they don’t have to worry about any pro scouts coming to look at them play. This will also give the younger players a chance to prepare for next year. Joe Cox was asked by a CBS analyst if he thought Florida respected him and he answered he didn’t know. I think that the answer should be as plain as the nose on his face now. On the CMR show I saw a man who looked as if he had no desire to correct the path of this train. He had no fire and seemed to take this as just a bad day at the office and to prove this point he stated that Joe Cox will be the starter for Saturday. Go Figure

It appears to me that Richt has gone into defensive mode, which means he’s too paralyzed with fear of things getting even worse (such as a loss to Tennessee Tech) to make any real changes. Which means that what you see is what you get for the remainder of the season. He’ll probably put in Logan Gray for a few series, and maybe the kid will do well, but Joe Cox is likely to be the starter for the rest of the season.

All of which means nothing. I’m so agitated and confused right now that I can’t think straight.

Florida coach Urban Meyer suspended All-America middle linebacker Brandon Spikes for the first half of this week’s Vanderbilt game after watching the tape Monday of Spikes attempting to gouge the eyes of Georgia tailback Washaun Ealey in Saturday’s game in Jacksonville.

Instant replayVideo evidence shows Spikes reaching into the Ealey’s helmet. The incident can be seen here on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cISxU8Crulw

“I understand what goes on in football, but there’s no place for that,” Meyer said. “I spoke with him. That’s not who he is; that’s not who we are. He got caught up in the emotion.

“I love Brandon Spikes; our team does. That’s not something (we condone). We’ll move on. He has our full support.”

The SEC released a statement Monday saying it “has reviewed and accepted the disciplinary actions taken by the University of Florida regarding football student-athlete Brandon Spikes.”

The video, which is posted on YouTube, shows Spikes digging his right hand into Ealey’s helmet during a pileup.

“I saw it,” Meyer said. “My wife said something (about it) last night and coach (Charlie) Strong said something today. Then I saw it and said, ‘That’s not right.’ ”

Meyer said he spoke with Spikes on Monday morning after watching the tape.

“The game of football is very emotional,” Meyer said. “The bottom line is we’re Florida and he’s Brandon Spikes. We expect certain things.”

Spikes issued a statement through the UF sports information office Monday apologizing for the incident.

“I accept responsibility for my actions and I accept the consequences of my actions,” Spikes said. “I would like to apologize to my team and the coaching staff and Washaun Ealey. Football is a very physical and emotional game, but there is no excuse for my actions.”

Meyer said he spoke with SEC commissioner Mike Slive about the incident

Meyer said Spikes was retaliating for an incident earlier in the game in which Spikes’ helmet was knocked off by a Georgia player.

Spikes is a team leader and one of the Gators’ most emotional players.

“He’s not a bad guy. He’s a great guy,” Meyer said. “I want to coach passionate guys, but I don’t want things that stand out. We have to live within the rules and do it the right way.”

Senior Ryan Stamper, a starter at outside linebacker, will replace Spikes at middle linebacker for the first half of Saturday’s game.

The below letter was written because of HOW the results of the Georgia/Florida game so UPSET Georgia Newspapers and fans (esp. the AJC & the Athens Banner Herald) that they did not even want to ACKNOWLEDGE that a game HAD actually taken place!! (Last time I checked, it still takes 22 players on the field for such to take place…and, what a shame to treat ALL of these players–BOTH teams–who ‘played their heart/guts out, as if they didn’t exist!)
That there is a much ‘larger’ picture that must be addressed…even if I and others really do not like doing such. However, the University of Georgia is one terrific school FILLED with terrific students/staff and DESERVES being defended!!
For several years I recruited there, (also, from the Univ. of Tenn. to Univ. of Florida and all over Georgia, as well as Clemson), as well as being ‘guest lecturer’, so I KNOW what I am talking about! I so loved being on ALL of these campuses because, ANY time one has the opportunity for encouraging our ‘up and coming’ future leaders, it IS an ‘honor and privilege’…bar none!
MOST sincerely,
Deborah Seay Willis
Peachtree Corners, Georgia

Dear ‘Dawg Students/Alumni and Fans:
I wish I had the respect for Coach Richt that should be there, however, over the years he seems to be reverting to the practices of Bobby Bowden. That being, it doesn’t matter what the player does off the field,(or, during high school, as in a ‘rap’ sheet), just make sure that the locals understand that the football player is ‘off limits’, as has been the ‘understanding’ in Tallahassee for any of “Bobby’s Boys”,i.e. Jankowski being a classic example. Especially, since he was brought to FSU from OVER SEAS and could hardly speak/write/understand English much less attend class. MAJOR games were won for FSU by Jankowski that put a black eye on our beloved college football.
If it takes cutting Coach Richt, in order to help him learn that what he was taught at FSU, as being ‘acceptable practices’, is NOT acceptable for the ‘Mighty’ FINE/OUTSTANDING University of Georgia, then so be it.
Even though I am a Gator, I have had the pleasure of being guest of UGA at many football games (mostly prior to Coach Richt and then for his first year), and have cheered my heart for them…all but one game, that being, in Jacksonville!
Coach Dooley even informed me that I was a ‘Dawg Gator’ since I had bought TWO tables for supporting UGA Baseball, back when John Grisham came to give his talk for Coach Polk’s & UGA’s benefit. When I had the opportunity to buy for my ‘Dawg’ friends a few of Coach Dooley’s books: “Dooley’s Dawgs”; Coach recognized me and signed my book: “Love to Deborah~~A ‘Dawg-Gator’, Vince Dooley”!!(I shared with my ‘Dawg friends that since Coach Dooley could write the word: “Gator”, that surely they could say it without getting the bends!”)
The larger picture is of GREAT importance as THE University of Georgia
is “DOOLEY Tried and True” and HAD, at one time, been REGARDED as MOST HONORABLE, NationWIDE!…there is still time to ‘recapture’ YOUR FINE HERITAGE. Plus, the importance of SUPPORTING your team…they need to know that all the ‘blood, sweat and tears’ they have put into practice/games will be used for bettering themselves and your University. Each game is a NEW game so, please do not forget that!
All this ‘hating’ is so useless and such a waste of time, as well as being BELOW both of these FINE/OUTSTANDING Universities and Fans! Let the games regain their ‘proper’ perspectives, so WE can show the nation what SEC football is all about!!
Yours truly,
GatorGal

I wrote a letter to the university of florida. Eye gouging is illegal in mixed martial arts but I think it should be allowed in college football. It shows the fact that we will recruit some of the dirtiest football thugs so that we can win football games. It is obvious by the fine sportsmanship that Spikes showed that he is an upstanding young man. I really respect the fact that our coach would defend him by saying “they did it first”. As soon as the footage can be found it will shown that he was correct and not child like in saying that. I am sure that the footage is out there even though it is not online yet. Georgia’s Ealey says Spikes shouldn’t be suspended
The Associated Press

Published: Tuesday, November 3, 2009 at 3:09 p.m.
Last Modified: Tuesday, November 3, 2009 at 3:09 p.m.
ATHENS, Ga. — A most unlikely person came to the defense of Florida linebacker Brandon Spikes, who was suspended for half a game for apparently trying to gouge the eyes of Georgia running back Washaun Ealey.

Ealey said Tuesday he doesn’t believe Spikes should have been suspended.

In fact, Ealey seemed surprised the play from Saturday’s game drew so much attention.

Florida coach Urban Meyer on Monday suspended Spikes for the first half of this week’s game against Vanderbilt after the defensive captain stuck his hand in Ealey’s helmet and appeared to try to stick his fingers in Ealey’s eyes.

Ealey says he doesn’t agree with those who have said the suspension was not stiff enough.

“That really didn’t matter to me,” Ealey said of the suspension. “That’s their decision. He shouldn’t, I think, get suspended at all. We were just out there playing football.”

Ealey said he had his eyes closed when Spikes stuck his hand in his helmet and he wasn’t hurt.

“He really didn’t gouge my eyes,” Ealey said. “He really didn’t get a chance to get close to my eyes.”

The freshman said he believes similar incidents happen all the time.

“I’m pretty sure it goes on back and forth,” he said. “We probably do it and other teams do too. It’s all football. We’re just out there trying to have fun.”

Top-ranked Florida beat Georgia 41-17. The Bulldogs play Tennessee Tech on Saturday.

On Monday, Spikes issued an apology.

“I accept responsibility for my actions and I accept the consequences of my actions,” Spikes said. “I would like to apologize to my team and the coaching staff and Washaun Ealey. Football is a very physical and emotional game, but there is no excuse for my actions.”

The Southeastern Conference issued a statement on Monday saying it reviewed and accepted the discipline handed down by Florida.

Meyer said he believed Spikes retaliated after getting his helmet ripped off and eye poked earlier in the game.

Georgia coach Mark Richt said Spikes’ “helmet went flying off … and there was one time he got hit with his helmet off.”

“It was totally unintentional,” Richt said. “They were totally just playing ball. That might have got him bent out of shape. I don’t know about all of that.”

Ealey carried 17 times for 70 yards against the Gators.

“It was just a lot of emotion in the game,” he said. “We were out there fighting. It was a big rivalry game. Everybody was just out there talking trash back and forth. … We were just out there playing football and having fun.”

Notes: Richt said Caleb King will start over Ealey at tailback in Saturday’s game against Tennessee Tech. Richt said King has the edge in pass-blocking but said Ealey “will continue to play.” Ealey has started the last two games. … Richt said he hopes top receiver A.J. Green, who will miss this week’s game with a pulmonary contusion, can return to play against Auburn on Nov. 14.

As a Tech fan it’s fun to see you UGA rednecks beside your selves. This is a UGA state. The dogs WILL be back. You act like your Alabama, USC or Notre Dame. For god’s sake you have one natonal title in what 40 years? Richt is a great coach and very good man. Changes will be made with some of your coaches at the end of the season – after TECH puts a whipping on you. The Dogs won’t be down long. Just stop acting like your entitled to win every game. It ain’t going to happen.
