5+1 reasons UGA’s loss was even worse than it seemed

Here's the first of Joe Cox's several interceptions. (AJC photo by Bob Andres)

Here's the first of Joe Cox's several interceptions. (AJC photo by Bob Andres)

1. With Georgia within 14 points and still 10 minutes to  play, some 10,000 Georgia backers  up and left. Think about that. You’ve paid for tickets, parking, food, hotel and  gas/airfare to come watch your team, and your team still has a theoretical chance. (One tipped pass and  it’s a one-score game.) And you have so little faith in your team that you walk out. And your program has won 10 or more games six times in the past seven seasons. This would seem to say, at least to me, that Mark Richt is losing his constituency.

2. When Georgia pulled within 14-10, it did its huddle-up-and-jump-around thing on the sideline, and I typed on the live chat, “I smell a late hit coming.” It came on the kickoff. Michael Gilliard, late hit. It is uncanny how this team cannot play by the rules.

3. Florida scored 41 points without doing anything extraordinary. No Gator rushed for 100 yards. No Gator had 100 yards receiving. Tim Tebow’s longest completion was for 29 yards. Not until the game’s final drive did Florida gain 30 yards on a scrimmage play. And the Gators didn’t throw a fourth-quarter pass (though Tebow was sacked once). And a merciful Urban Meyer had John Brantley take a knee with the ball on the Georgia 20. Think Spurrier would have?

What's the worst loss under Richt?

4. Joe Cox was supposed to be a game manager. Instead the fifth-year senior has been wilder than Matthew Stafford was as a freshman. Stafford had 13 interceptions in 2006 and didn’t start every game. Cox has 12 interceptions in eight games. And the second interception Saturday was just sad: Pressured, Cox tried to throw the ball out of bounds but couldn’t sling it far enough. The exact same thing had happened in Knoxville. Which brings us to …

5. Tennessee. It’s coming fast. If Georgia didn’t figure to finish ahead of Florida in 2009, neither did it seem any other SEC East school posed an imminent threat to the Bulldogs’ hold on second place. South Carolina is ensconced as a 7-5 or 8-4 team, and Kentucky and Vandy are Kentucky and Vandy. But Tennessee has now beaten Georgia and South Carolina and has played Florida and Alabama close, and that’s a scary sign. Because if Tennessee in Year 1 under Kiffin can have the same overall record as Georgia in Year 9 under Richt, what happens in 2010?

6. The black helmets. Just embarrassing.

Couldn’t agree more, especially regarding the helmets. As soon as I saw them, I knew we were toast. Good teams don’t need gimmicks.

You forgot to mention Logan Gray. Even as a freshman, we could see that Tebow had something to contribute as he played behind Chris Leak. Logan? Not so much.

Richt lost his flare, his dominance, and his respect the moment our team rushed onto the field in 07. He has to rely on gimmicks to motivate. This team is awful, just awful. Changes better come quick or Athens will be a ghost town next season. O yeah, as always, next season, right?

Pathetic that you’re playing the #1 team in the country and that’s not enough motivation….you have to resort to uniform gimmicks to get your team motivated…that reeks of desperation….what Georgieee has become desperate.

UGA’s worst loss under Richt clearly had to be Bama’s beatdown in Athens last year. UGA spent all week getting riled up over a blackout and Bama OWNED UGA all game long. Despite the score, UGA was never in the game and it started this 14 month long downfall of the whole UGA football program!

The reason Richt is losing his constituency is because he has not/will not make changes where needed. People are fed up with his so-called cool demeanor and relying on gimmicks just to fire up his team. The last four years have screamed for change on the defensive side of the ball but he will not pull the trigger. If he does not do it after this season , then it is time for him to go.And yes , Georgia will fire him , if the big boys with the big bucks start withholding their money.

Agree 100 percent, Mark, with one exception. Mark Richt has lost this constituent. It’s been slowly building for a while now. But Saturday was the final straw. With two weeks to prepare a game plan that might help us beat Florida, what did we do: Black helmets. I saw a quote where Richt said he thought the helmets gave the team a spark. What? We were down 7-0 after two-and-a-half minutes. The spark he saw was his career going up in flames. Stupid gimmicks don’t work. If they did, Jerry Glanville would be a Hall of Fame coach with a drawer full of Super Bowl rings.

I confess: I haven’t yet had a good look at the Brandon Spikes/Washaun Ealey incident. I tried to watch the clip on YouTube yesterday but couldn’t tell much of anything. I could see Spikes flailing at something, but I couldn’t tell what.

All good points Mark. Something has to give. Yesterday was just embarrassing. I have a uniform idea. Why don’t we strip the “G” and the stripe off the helmet put’em in white pants and make them earn them back.

Fuzzy Bee, believe me, you guys don’t want Martinez. But I did watch your game last night and your guy ain’t much better. If we don’t turn over the ball against you guys (and we will!), you guys will beat us 78-50 and all scoring and yardage records will be broken!

This is the most undiscplined and unintelligent team I have ever seen. I was calling for a close game, and would have been if UGA could get out of their own DAMN way. Is Cox truly the best QB we have. Every freaking pass to AJ was high and behind. He will get AJ hurt before the season is over.

I don’t want to hear crap about bogus flags. Every flag was legit. Once again a CMR coached team shows up unprepared. UF never stopped UGA the entire first half, UGA stopped themselves time and time again. Will this season ever end. Hopefully UGA will lose the rest of the games and CMR A$$ will be kicked to the curb along with his best bud, CWM. This team is beyond pathetic. They are so pathetic that I could say CUM and Tebow felt sorry for them.

I liked the black helmets. No seriously, it showed that Richt hadn’t thrown in the towel, that he genuinely was trying to win this. Didn’t work out, but wouldn’t stopping the stunts be even worse? It would mean that he wasn’t willing to bet any more dignity/credibility on this team.

Whether the fans don’t have any confidence in our team or not it is plain sad that our fans would leave early. Give your tickets to fans that will actually stand behind the players no matter what. Sit at home if you aren’t any better of a person than that!

Mark – You hit the nail on the head with #2. Its a huge problem right now and 85% of that kind of play is the coaches fault.

We are now the Grambling of the SEC. Just think we are 3 plays away from 1 and 7. Dropped pass on 4th down in the end zone for SC. Blocked punt against A State and 4th down dropped pass for Ark. We are going backwards fast. Unelievable!!! Changes need to be made or changes will be made. I bet there won’t be a fee to get season tickets next year!!

Mark Richt put his personal relationship with his best friend ahead of what’s best for our football team.

Mark Richt coaches the MOST UNDISCIPLINED football team in the nation, and REFUSES to do anything about it.

As a Dawg fan, It hurts to see the program in this state. Mark Richt may not be the problem, but the Coordinators got to go. I knew we were doom against Tennessee just looking at the Monte Kiffin vs Bobo(Mr.PRedictable) matchup. I agree the black jersey helmet, jerseys etc.. just got to stop. If you aren’t motivated on winning a big game like this or the SEC East championship and SEC championship isn’t big enough motivation for the players, then what is being preached by the Coaches. CMR is a great captain but he has got to get some hardnosed take no nonsense sergeants to get these guy motivated.

Ple4ase remember Cox was recruited by Bobo ( aka: Bozo the clown, hence forth) simply put now you why he is playing.
Richt the CEO will be in the unemployment line if he does go ahead and announce decisions of his coordinators. He must relief Bobo and Martinez of their duties immediately or basically lose his job. Now is the time with T.Tech coming in!!
Either lead , follow, or get the heck out of the way!
Do not be scared to make a decision.

I am done watching this joke of a coaching staff. They clearly embarrassed the fan base and the national audience with the hokey “black helmets & black pants”…it reeks of Jerry Glanville leaving tickets at the box office for Elvis. We are in full regression with the current state of this program and woeful coaching. UT is absolutely making progress in year one with Lame Kitten and his staff and will pass UGA as long as Richt and company are running this sinking ship.

Richt is the WORST tactical coach I have seen in a long time and RARELY makes in game adjustments that helps his team. Why is this so difficult to see??? Paul Johnson has done wonders in two short seasons at Tech and he his working with another staff’s recruits. IT’S TIME FOR CHANGE!

Changes have to be made, but I am afraid that CMR won’t make them. The D sucked last year, and no changes. Now the D and offence suck and there is no discipline on this team.
Another football season lost. We will be lucky to win 2 of our remaining games. There is no way we will beat GT.
I have been a Dawg for 40+ years and this is about as bad as it’s evern been. How did the program go from preseason #1 last year to this???

Several key things I see each year out of this team.

I agree with all of the talk of these silly motivational tactics. If we’ve got to resort to what we wear and special antics to motivate us (which isn’t working), then we’re in real trouble. I said that when the endzone celebration happened two years ago, with the black jerseys against ALA and yesterday with the helmets.

I don’t ever see this team playing with passion and confidence. There seems to be something missing. Hasn’t been there since Dooley. You always knew his teams would come to play for 60 minutes.

And the lack of discipline on this team is another thing. It seems if we make a big play, we act like we haven’t done that/been there before. Aren’t these plays they’re supposed to make these plays (although few and far between) – sack, hit, tackle, run, catch, etc…??? And the penalties. My gosh. That’s a team in need of some coaching and leadership.

The Problem was NOT the Uniforms

November 1st, 2009

Everyone, Mark included, needs to forget the uniform thingy. I thought they were fine, and if the team wanted something a little different for Halloween, or for any other reason, there’s nothing wrong with that. They were not the reason for the loss, or the way the team played. If Mark B. or all of you morons want to draw attention to that, you’re missing what the problems really are.
