Jacksonville — It was raining when I boarded the plane at Hartsfield-Jackson at 7:45 a.m. It is not raining here, unless you count sweat beads. Here it’s hot. Here it’s hot even by Florida standards. And, speaking of sweat …
Your genius correspondent managed to leave his glasses in Tim Tucker’s rental car at the stadium, necessitating another walk to/from distant Lot P. This marks the second time in 13 months I’ve left my glasses in a rental car, and the first was in Tempe, Ariz., where it was only 97 degrees and we were parked even farther away.
But enough about this perspiring writer. Let’s talk about other writers. The Florida Times-Union asked 32 writers, some of whom might actually have seen Georgia play in the past five years, for a prediction. (None of the 32 were from the AJC, you should know.) Thirty picked the Gators. The two exceptions: Matt Hayes of Sporting News and Scott Michaux of the Augusta Chronicle.
By tradition the Georgia-Florida crowd is split down the middle, but there seem many, many more Gators here this time. Perhaps Georgia fans are keeping a lower profile. Perhaps they sold their ducats. Perhaps they’re using the proceeds from that windfall to buy out Willie Martinez.
And I have to tell you, it has been a long time since I arrived at a stadium (with or without glasses) feeling as I do. I don’t see a way Georgia can win. I suppose Florida could fumble 10 times, but I can’t really see Florida doing that. And I can’t see the team with the better offense and better defense not winning.
But I have, as we know, been wrong before. I covered the Super Bowl between the Rams and the Patriots, in which St. Louis entered with the better offense and defense. I picked the Patriots to lose 42-3. They won 20-17. So I guess stranger things have happened. But not many, I submit.
With that, the floor is open for your comments and observations and contributions to the Free Willie Fund. I’ll be here all day, unless I feel the need to walk back across the parking lot and sweat through my shirt again.

No way is it impossible for Ga to win. Are you saying Ga is markedly worse than Miss. State? They nearly beat these GAtors a week ago. There is also not a huge talent difference. What there is is a huge discipline difference. The Dawgs turn the ball over way too much. That more than Martinez and his D is where Georgia has lost control of games. Now granted the play in the trenches on both sides of the ball had been hugely dissapointing. But Georgia has players.
If the Dawgs play clean for a change and get their best effort from the big men. They could very coceivably pull the upset.

I know that there is no way on paper that Georgia should win today, so a loss will not upset me as much, unless it involves Penn Wagers and his henchmen. Im a dawg and support CMR REGARDLESS of what happens today. Go dawgs.

I know Florida will beat Georgia and the beauty of the thing is if the coaches complain about my refs then I suspend them.

Anyone watching the iowa ind game? the refs just took away a def td from ind. the call on the field was a td. they are doing all they can to keep iowa undefeated. i guess for the tv ratings for the big showdown at night against osu. iowa loses and it loses it’s luster and is not a night game. what a joke. big 10 as bad as the sec. these officials have got to go.

I want us to win, but I don’t want a victory to be a reason to keep Martinez and Bobo. We need some fresh minds on both sides of the ball. I hope CMR realizes that if he dosen’t I predict next year will be CMR’s last. We could bring in Kirby Smart as Head Coach, at least we would get back to good defense.
If we play the CWM soft 4-3 defense with zone with the DB’s we will be killed today. If we fail to put heat on Tebow he will kill us. Hopefully we will see some 5 and 6 man fronts with some stunts and blitzes, without that aggressive defense we will lose big.

There is no way that the SEC refs are going to allow Georgia to win this game. If by the Grace of God the score is close at the end and Georgia manages a major play to put it in position to win, you can be sure an SEC ref’s flag will be thrown to negate the play and put Florida in position to win.

Oh and Mark iowa returned an int for a int. The ball ricocheted (sp?) 4 times off players and landed in an iowa players hands in the backfield. It was at the iowa 15. Ind is dominating them but they are still in it with that lucky play along with the refs. It really should be 35-7.

Penn Wagers is doing the Auburn game. They have already made a big mistake on an interception call. The review booth said the ball hit the ground to angle shown indicated a reason to overturn the ruling on the field. What is going on with these SEC Refs? The league office needs to upgrade the officals instead of fining coaches for calling out bad officiating.

Lemme say this about Willie before I go. I think the guy gets somewhat of a bum rap. We continually have 3 and outs. His D is out there waaaaayyyy too long. I was sitting near the bench last week at Vandy. You can hear the coaches and players there when they talk because they are so close to you. I was shocked at how intense this guy is when he coaches. He got MY attention.
If we had some time of possesion and if Gardner would get more out of the D line, I think we have a totally different perception of our defense. Some of our breakdowns are not his fault.

Question, Mark. If Tim Tebow does the “gator chomp” with his hands, and doesn’t get penalized for it, then suppose a Georgia player scores and does the same chomp, should it be a penalty? When Mo Mass did that two years ago and got the 15-yard celebration penalty, that was garbage, but Florida gets away with it weekly.
That said, Georgia’s TD score may make it go from 38-3 to 38-10. Sadly, I think Georgia’s got no chance. I hate it, too.

Mark – I look forward to reading your blog throughout today. You do a great job. Unfortunately, I agree with you of your assessment of today’s game – I don’t see how the dawgs win either. Maybe with the pressure off of the dawgs, they’ll play loose – while, with Florida having the pressure of being #1 (and keeping it) along with trying to figure out their offense (hope Willie doesn’t let them “find” it today) – maybe Florida will be playing tight. Its amazing to me how the Georgia defense cant make any adjustments at all. That drive looked like the Tennessee game all over again and it will be interesting to see how Willie, Rict and the exscuse makers spin this blow out. And already we have a ton of penalties…really stupid ones, that stop drives. This season could not be any worse. How about Richt instilling some discipline in his teams rather than making stupid comments like he has in the past few weeks such as “I was at Florida State for ten years and we were the most penalized team then and it didnt seem to matter,” as well as “We only have 20 hours a week to practice, how are we supposed to improve on special teams”. These are excuses and not comments that should be made from the leader of an SEC football team. Everyone will have a down year, but this attitude bleeds down to the players and becomes a cancer on a team. I have always been a Richt fan, but it his comments of late, not the teams play that have caused me to seriously doubt his ability to lead the Georgia football team.

There is not anything wrong with the looks of the Helmets. It is more the coaching staff & some really dumb players that has made you ill. If we were up by 14, they would look great. We’ve seen so many penalties in the last two years, and all these penalties, especially ones like today’s two early drive-killing personal fouls, are reflective of poor coaching and a poor atmosphere in the Georgia program. I hate to say it, but I think we need new coaches from top to bottom—Richt sets the tone that creates this undisciplined atmosphere, and he selects the coaches that foster that atmosphere.

When I was at Georgia forestry was king. We would always remind everybody that trees means jobs and trees can change the way you think and spelle. This is a pretty good game but those black helmets don’t look right. If they lose wearing those it will be the last time they use ‘em. If they win we may be on to something. Hershel did all his damage in three years. Tebow and Ron Dayne (who broke Herschel’s rushing yardage record) did theirs in four. There will never- I repeat- NEVER be another Herschel. there have been some great RBs after him (Reggie Bush and Barry Sanders come to mind), but he’s still a man among boys.

I love Georgia and have been a fan for 30 plus years, but I have to say that this is one of the most poorly coached, horrible use of talent and dumbest team I have ever seen! Everything from having the punter out kick the coverage punting to a dangerous return team to dumb penalty(s)! This is not a situation were there is a big gap in talent! Georgia is in need of some leadership at the coaching position! To many guys relying on their talent and not playing assignment football!

Actually, the offense has looked good. The senseless penalties are killing us! I have been a huge Richt supporter through thick and thin, but I am beyond upset with the lack of action when senseless penalties occur. The facemask and the out of bounds slinging should get somebody in their face!
BS on Tebow breaking Hershel’s record. How can you not count bowl games for Hershel but include them for Tebow? It was Hershel’s decision to go early so I won’t argue 3 vs. 4 years, but let’s level the playing field.

Martinez must be fired. Bobo fired. The Georgia coaching staff is a bunch of amateurs. Honestly, I think that Richt needs to resign. He is a good man, but doesn’t have what it takes to compete in the SEC. Year in and year out UGA has top ten recruiting class but they don’t perform. UGA has not been an elite SEC team since Shockley’s last season. Instead of just being second to Florida they’ve now fallen to the bottom half of the SEC east. What a shame.

Goff could recruit and he had a great Offensive Coordinator in McDuffie– his biggest mistake was not finding a great DC. Being a great coach doesn’t always mean you need to call the plays in the game — it means hiring great assistants and getting the recruits. Just think if UGA had a great DC when we had Zeir at QB, etc.

We aren’t even trying to pick up a first down. And, 49 for UF came in helmet to helmet on Cox yet NO penalty. This crap officiating is killing everybody in the SEC. Whoever plays UF is automatically down 10 due to the refs. If the big time alumni from UGA hold off on the checks they send in until Willie is gone, that will bring the change needed. I know people are screaming and yelling and all, but something really HAS to be done. I am to the point of saying I’d rather lose Richt if it were the only way to get rid of Willie. And I love CMR as a head man. But if that is what it takes to get Willie out, then let him go, too. I can’t take not even having a chance in these games. It’s just not any fun. Mark, of course CUM is serious…Richt has become his b#$tch. If we don’t bring in another QB to start the second half, if we don’t sit Evans, Williams, and Miller on the bench for the rest of the game, and if we don’t use Boykin and Smith on offense (instead of defense), then Richt should resign and appologize to all the UGA fans. And please, stop recruiting 5′8″ defensive backs no matter how fast they are…they sux (and can’t cover, either). Don’t wear those inner city Atlanta HS uniforms, just beat UF in our red & silver. Just my opinion.

Some might claim that Georgia fans are being unrealistic. This goes back several years. One year we’ll have great special teams but a bad offense and defense. Another year, great defense but a bad offense and special teams. Another year great offense but bad defense and bad special teams. Unfortunately, this year, it seems we have bad all three. When will the madness end? If Georgia doesn’t make changes at the end of the season they’re going to lose a lot of financial support from alumni. What is the definition of insanity? Doing the same thing over an over and expecting different results.

Oh now the holding call is why Georgia will lsoe to Florida yet again. The refs cost Georgia yet another game along with Willie Boy of course. It must be horrible to be a Georgia fan.
