Jacksonville — The game was a total loss, but the lesson imparted need not be. After yet another lost Saturday in Duval County, this much is beyond dispute: Georgia is no longer a major player in its division, let alone the nation.
Mark Richt began his somber media briefing by saying, “Well, here we are again.” And there they were, lopsided losers. It was 49-10 last season and 41-17 this time, and for all the good work Richt did in the early part of this decade, he and his program have been lapped by Urban Meyer. And Richt, once so clever and driven, seems to have run out of ideas.
He tried the color-scheme gimmick Saturday, presenting his players with black helmets after they’d warmed up in the usual red headgear. The upshot of this was to make Georgia look like an Arena league team and to cow the nation’s No. 1 team not one whit. After 11 1/2 minutes, the guys in the orange hats led the guys in the black hats 14-0.
“It’s not the helmet,” safety Reshad Jones said. “It’s what inside the helmet.”
Well, yes. With an extra week to prepare, Willie Martinez seemed even more witless than usual. As bad as the Gators’ first two touchdowns were, the third was an affront to everything Red and Black. Facing third-and-3 at the Georgia 23 with 1:32 left in the half, Florida ran a simple option. Tim Tebow faked a handoff and burst up the middle. He scored the touchdown that put him ahead of the hallowed Herschel Walker without being touched.
“They’re a good team,” said defensive end Justin Houston. “But it seemed like every time we made a bad play, they capitalized on it.”
In the first half Georgia had eight penalties. In the second it had four interceptions. If it was to have any chance against the Gators, it had to play a clean game. Instead it authored another in a series of messes.
If we’re to believe recruiting rankings, the gulf between Georgia and Florida shouldn’t be so pronounced. But Saturday was another installment of men against boys, and it called to mind the barb Steve Spurrier sunk into Ray Goff in this stadium 18 years ago: “Georgia gets all these players — I don’t know what happens to them.”
Players go to Florida and get, to invoke another Spurrier-ism, coached up. Players come to Georgia and are left to their own devices. Martinez is a substandard defensive coordinator, and no other position coach can be said to have done fabulous work. (Unless you count Kevin Butler, who isn’t a coach but who did sire the prodigious punter Drew Butler.)
Said Richt: “We’re 4-4 this season. I don’t think it’s an indictment of the program. I think it’s an indictment of where we are this year.”
Except Georgia has underachieved three times in the past four seasons, and as Richt himself noted Saturday: “There’s no guarantee of a bowl. The question is, will we play a game when we don’t do something that hinders us from being the best we can be?”
The Bulldogs have never lost more than four games under Richt, but they’ve never been 4-4 under this coach, either. Regarding possible changes, he said: “It’s not good to make decisions within minutes of an emotional game. You’ve got to settle your mind and settle your spirit, and then see where you are.”
As darkness fell on Halloween 2009, Georgia was again where it has been too often. The program that has all the resources was left to wonder why it has fallen so far behind Florida. And the ugly truth has never been more apparent: Florida might or might not have better players, but it absolutely has better coaches.

With an off week to prepare, all Richt can come up with is a bush league motivational gimmick??
Richt won while UF and Bama were struggling. Now that both programs are back at full strength, UGA is an afterthought in the SEC.

CMR is not concerned. He has his contract. A third tier has been created in the SEC with the dawgs already mired in it. The dawg nation is coming to grips with the new reality, and DO NOT LIKE IT. Its gonna take some strong medicine to right this sinking ship, and I don’t expect anyone in the UGA hierarchy has the guts to do it. IF I had been at the game, I would have left early too.

I guess the AJC needs to do something to keep readers, and that’s to go into the “tear them down” part of the old “build ‘em up, tear ‘em down” cycle. Five years ago, Mark Bradley couldn’t saint Mark Richt fast enough, now he’s ridiculing him as second-rate. The truth, as always, is somewhere in the middle — but not to be found in this blog, or this “newspaper.” (Does the AJC bother to print a physical edition anymore?)

Its not like the dawgs missed a two foot putt. Yeah, they stank yesterday, but they’ve got 4 winnable games left and the coaches need to focus on getting the players that want to play on the field and ready.
I look at my Vols and see progress. Was I happy at the start of the year – hell no. But they are moving forward and the dawgs need understand it is one game at a time.

Yeah the helmet gimmick was a surprise. ( Same at Tennessee last night with the jerseys. ) You win in football with blocking & tackling. I really thought that with a week off UGA would put together the running game they so desperately need & be in position to win the game. But I was dead wrong.
And the team does seem undisciplined. And some of the fouls were clearly the result of an attitude of “ME”. But that could be the result of who is recruited as opposed to lack of effort by coaches. Recruit the players that fit your system, offense, defense & off the field, and discipline should take care of itself.

This time you can’t blame CWM’s defense. the defense played well. the offense is what stinks JOE COX IS TERRIBLE HE NEEDS TO BE BENCHED GIVEN HIS DEGREE AND TOLD TO GET OUT OF ATHENS BEFORE THE SUN GOES DOWN! we were only down 24-10 to start the 3rd qtr, but the get batted in the air and all cox does is stand there and lets the fl guy catch the ball, if we could have scored the game would have been different 24-17, if it’s 3rd and 1 why would you line up in a power set and throw to a full back to get 1 yard… it looks like bobo had no confidence in the o-line to give the ball to ealey to get the first down, there were some terrible play calls is this game, also we didnt throw the ball deep one time in this game . the whole game plan sucked. outplayed and out coached again. these coaches need to be held accountable.

To Old School Dawg:
As I said yesterday, I will admit now that FLA is the better team, by alot! Dawgs were nowhere near team FLA is. Pitiful game- penalties, turnovers, lack of execution, etc. that unfortunatley GA keeps doing this season. UGA has some serious problems that start at the top. Maybe not fire Richt, but Bobo and Martinez have got to go.

I love Mark Richt and think he is the best thing to happen to UGA football since Ray Goff. He just needs some time to get his kind of players and his system installed and we’ll be seeing SEC and National Championships every year! We need to get behind CMR and his staff and just accept the fact that the Gators own us and that we suck. Then we can be happy each week instead of sad.

My 2 cents as a life long Tech fan and someone who pulls for UGA. Richt brought a lot of this on himself. Their D has been sub par every since the parting of VanGorder and the Offense has underperformed ever since Richt gave up the play calling duties. This was more than apparent last season. As a matter of fact the Coaching shortcomings were glaringly bad and Richt chose to stand by his coaches. Now I like Richt a lot but this isn’t about Richt, it’s about UGA and his decision showed a lack of respect/appreciation for the Bulldawg nation. In my book he gets one more chance. Major coaching staff changes must be made and after next year if there is no “improvement” in coaching then I would be willing to officially place Richt on the hot seat! But Richt is too good of a man and too classsy to give up on now…

Then the “we’re the champions on the world” posts will yet begin again until yet again the Gators “smarsh” your “arshes” once again on the football field where winning the war only matters. 17 out of 20 and soon to be 18 out of 21. As a Dawg fan, I concede. Hats off to Florida. They beat a UGA team that had no clue on defense, Kept playing a quarterback that likes throwing interceptions and continued to racked penalties. At this point, I would like to say that Florida was the better team, but if you analyze the game for what it was, UGA gift wrapped the game for florida. Florida took advantage of everything given to them. So all you other dawg fans out there, don’t be mad at a team that was doing everything that is was suppose to do.
Did anyone expect Florida to not intercept those passes thrown right at them. Did you not expect Tebow to run the ball. Florida was doing everything they were coached to do. Whereas, UGA was doing the exact opposite of was the were coached to do. Let’s not play that record again.
Again, Hats off to Florida. Enjoy it because after you lose to Alabama in the SEC Championship and win whatever bowl game you go to, (I say that because I don’t think UF is going to the NC game), Tebow, Spikes and the rest of of the seniors on this team are gone. Then FL will understand what it feels like to go through what UGA is going through.
Good luck UF. HAHAHAHAHA

All I’ve heard from Gator fans is how bad our team is and now after reading some blogs on Fox Sports, they are complaining that this win isn’t getting them the respect they deserve………WTH? You caint have it both ways. In my opinion none of the top ranked teams have looked superior. As bad as our D has been UF didn’t put up that great of numbers on them, the big difference was UGA’s penalties and turn overs. Yes UF did take advantage of them and that is what great teams do but if you take them out of the game the 2 teams actually matched up fairly even, look at the stats. If you ask me, I think UF’s soft schedule is holding them back. At least if we had the teams that we’ve had in the past few years that would have helped UF’s strenght of schedule.

It was nice to see Tim Tebow came as Tim Tebow for Halloween and of course Georgia came as Georgia. 2nd most penalized team in the NCAA, it’s not like they can afford to give away yardage or field position. To whoever said the defense played well, You are nuts!. We stopped Fla on “one” play in the 1st quarter. A run up the middle for no gain. Outside of their receiver dropping a wide open TD pass they stopped themselves. We had no answer for their offense. We couldn’t stop Tebow on 3rd down evryone knew he was going to run but we bit on the simple fake every time.Yes the offense made it worse but they still score 30 on us even without the interceptions. Is that where we are in this program under CWM that if the other team’s offense scores less than 35 (on their own) we did something good on D? LOL!

Right now as a UGA fan, yesterday’s game is very disheartening. It is one thing to lose the game by a play or two, but yesterday I saw too many instances that the team has totally clocked out. As I have read many of the opinions expressed in this blog, I wondered aloud about whether CMR should be replaced or not. If you examine the entire body of work duting his tenure, there has been too many games that we were favored in but yet we still lost. The only teams coached under him that actually reached their potential both won the SEC championships. Yet for the lack of motivation, that team lost to WVU in a blowout fashion. Why? Because they we’re coached up not down. Most of the teams we play now are simply more hungry than we are. Hunger, desire and motivation are supposed to come from the top down. For that anyone who has suggested that Richt be removed is fair in their evaluation. However wih that being said….. it is time for some change. There are several DC who love the opportunity to turn this defense around. Although Will Muschamp, Kirby Smart, Bill Young, may not leave their current positions, it would do miracles for us to have someone new in the position. I would even inquire of Charlie Strong availability for the program.Leadin another defense into greater potential could be the move that allows him to finally become a HC in this league, if not elsewhere. As far as the offensive woes go, I wouldn’t strip the red-shirt of Murray or Mettenburger but with Logan Gray, see if he has the potetntial to be elite level SEC QB. When I saw Logan Gray, I have always seen him cut from the cloth of a Colt McCoy, Chase Daniel, Reesing type of QB. If Logan Gray is unable to run CMR’s pro set then allow his skillset to come to the forefront. He was a very dynamic QB in HS who also brought in hi sHS teammate in Aron White. Let’s hope that for the future we see more opportunities of Aron Murray to Orson Charles! They also came from the same program in Florida and many experts had Orson Charles ranked higher in his class than Aron White but both were considered Top 30 talent. In closing, CMR does deserve another 2 years. Why? Because if he does make the wholesale changes that we are all discussing, next year will still be a year of transition. Now if those changes do not bring results, then those that empowered are left to make some tough decisions. But let’s also not forget that those in the ocaching fraternity with CMR who started around the dame are also struggling. From Senator Tressel, Bob Stoops and Pete Carroll who have also had similar results with recruiting, have all fallen on hard tmes this year. The reality is that football games are not played in Feburary but rather through September to December.

UGA fans better come to terms with the fact that AJ Green will leave early for NFL (when he’s eligible). I would if I were him. Bulldogs stink this year and it’s unlikely they’ll improve next year. They’ve regressed since Van Gorder left and Mark Richt is too much like Bobby Cox when it comes to loyalty to players and coaches. Ironically, Zook was 2-1 against Georgia; Urban is now 3-1, with a solid chance at a 3rd NC in 4 years. Why does everyone think Bama is going beat Florida .. I know Dawg fans are hoping for that, but can’t really think it. Basically the same Gator team beat Bama last year (Harvin didn’t play in the SEC Championship Game v. Bama) Bama has a 1st year qb this year, unlike last year they had a Sr. They also lost stud OLmen and DLmen. Will probably be a tight game, I’m guessing Florida will be favored and most likely win. A good D beats an inexperienced QB most of the time. Plus the Gators can actually make a fg (sorry Vols) and of course Timmy T won’t let’m lose again. Go Gators! Next year will be alot tougher, but the Gators keep reloading with 4/5 star recruits and actually know how to motivate’m and coach’m up. Truth hurts, but it’s still the truth.
