Another black day in Jax reveals UGA as second-rate

Jacksonville — The game was a total loss, but the lesson imparted need not be. After yet another lost Saturday in Duval County, this much is beyond dispute: Georgia is no longer a major player in its division, let alone the nation.

Mark Richt began his somber media briefing by saying, “Well, here we are again.” And there they were, lopsided losers. It was 49-10 last season and 41-17 this time, and for all the good work Richt did in the early part of this decade, he and his program have been lapped by Urban Meyer. And Richt, once so clever and driven, seems to have run out of ideas.

He tried the color-scheme gimmick Saturday, presenting his players with black helmets after they’d warmed up in the usual red headgear. The upshot of this was to make Georgia look like an Arena league team and to cow the nation’s No. 1 team not one whit. After 11 1/2 minutes, the guys in the orange hats led the guys in the black hats 14-0.

“It’s not the helmet,” safety Reshad Jones said. “It’s what inside the helmet.”

Well, yes. With an extra week to prepare, Willie Martinez seemed even more witless than usual. As bad as the Gators’ first two touchdowns were, the third was an affront to everything Red and Black. Facing third-and-3 at the Georgia 23 with 1:32 left in the half, Florida ran a simple option. Tim Tebow faked a handoff and burst up the middle. He scored the touchdown that put him ahead of the hallowed Herschel Walker without being touched.

“They’re a good team,” said defensive end Justin Houston. “But it seemed like every time we made a bad play, they capitalized on it.”

In the first half Georgia had eight penalties. In the second it had four interceptions. If it was to have any chance against the Gators, it had to play a clean game. Instead it authored another in a series of messes.

If we’re to believe recruiting rankings, the gulf between Georgia and Florida shouldn’t be so pronounced. But Saturday was another installment of men against boys, and it called to mind the barb Steve Spurrier sunk into Ray Goff in this stadium 18 years ago: “Georgia gets all these players — I don’t know what happens to them.”

Players go to Florida and get, to invoke another Spurrier-ism, coached up. Players come to Georgia and are left to their own devices. Martinez is a substandard defensive coordinator, and no other position coach can be said to have done fabulous work. (Unless you count Kevin Butler, who isn’t a coach but who did sire the prodigious punter Drew Butler.)

Said Richt: “We’re 4-4 this season. I don’t think it’s an indictment of the program. I think it’s an indictment of where we are this year.”

Except Georgia has underachieved three times in the past four seasons, and as Richt himself noted Saturday: “There’s no guarantee of a bowl. The question is, will we play a game when we don’t do something that hinders us from being the best we can be?”

The Bulldogs have never lost more than four games under Richt, but they’ve never been 4-4 under this coach, either. Regarding possible changes, he said: “It’s not good to make decisions within minutes of an emotional game. You’ve got to settle your mind and settle your spirit, and then see where you are.”

As darkness fell on Halloween 2009, Georgia was again where it has been too often. The program that has all the resources was left to wonder why it has fallen so far behind Florida. And the ugly truth has never been more apparent: Florida might or might not have better players, but it absolutely has better coaches.

Tom: Tech has Alabama and Ole Miss on its schedule in a few years, and almost always plays 2 or 3 SEC teams out of conference. Other than Vandy, you can’t predict who will be good years ahead, when the schedules are contracted. Think before you drivel.

Well Bulldog Nation, let me start by saying I am very upset and emotionally distraught by what I am hearing from all of you. You people must understand that coaching in the SEC is very difficult. Motivating these kids is tough. VERY TOUGH! It is not my fault that these kids are not living up to the hype and unrealistic expectations placed by you, the fans. Black helmets in record heat seemed like a good idea at the time, but even that failed to get these kids off of their butts. Penalties and turnovers you say… NOT my fault.. You know who’s fault it is? It is Saban’s and Meyer’s fault. They keep invading OUR state and taking the best players. Now we even have to deal with this new kid up in Rocky Top land who seems bent on destroying our program more than that donut guy who preceded him. As for my assistant coaches… LEAVE ‘em alone. These men work hard for much less money than me and if I fired them, who would I pass the blame to after all of these losses? Let’s focus on the GOOD about our program. We have money.. TONS of it.. When I leave later this year to return to my beloved FSU, I will be leaving a program well-funded and incredibly well stocked with over-valued 2 and 3 star recruits. What’s not to love about that?

Richt is a fine man and a good coach.

He brought UGA back to life after decades of misery.

BUT, he is not doing the job.

The penalties? – Poor coaching – plain and simple.

He is accepting mediocrity. Maybe he is too nice of a guy…

Mark Bradley is correct though, his chances of being forced out are ZERO %.

He has AT LEAST 2 years to get on track. AD Evans will give him that & probably more to see how he does with a new staff.

Wholesale changes will be made at the end of this season. Bobo is safe, but that may be about it…

The turnovers & penalties are extraordinarily problematic, as they are a sign of no discipline. Which is a sign of poor coaching, and that comes from the top.

GA looked like they had a chance to be in an Arkansas type slug-fest with the start of the 1st drive! Unfortunately, the 15 yard personal foul for ripping off the helmet killed any chance of sustaining the drive. That type of penalty is unacceptable and stupid. And it is the fault of the head coach for fostering an atmosphere that allows it…

I am anxious to see who Richt hires for defense & what he does to improve discipline ON THE FIELD.,

If things don’t change over the next 2 seasons, he’ll have to go.

Seriously, I think that St. Richt should tries black thong panties next week. And what would be even better is to make a team photo to send out to their next opponents. That should guarantee them a win, because there is a possibility that their opponents would be laughing so hard that it might cause them to lose to ugag. Well, probably not.

I am a Gator fan. And yes, Georgia is my second favorite team (Mon & Dad went there. I also married a Georgia Peach) You have the same problem UF had when Dooley was trolling the sidelnes and we had Coach Dickey and Coach Pell. We would win one to UGA’s six or seven in a row.

Players want to play for winning programs. Florida is taking your talent from your state, Tennessee will do the same if Kiffin continues to return UT to its glory days. You’ve got great coaches at LSU, Bama, Mississippi State, What’s let will go an play for Georgia Tech.

Coach Richt is a great person however, he is an average coach in a league that has great coaches. When Florida fired Ron Zook, many – including myself, wanted the Visor to come back home. Our AD thought otherwise. He found a coach at a Non BCS school who was hungry to move into the BIG Leagues. When we hired Urban Meyer, people thought we were crazy. Five years later, we have two nationalchampionships and playing for a third. Georgia has talent … but not the coaches.

I really think the UGA could make a statement and start contending for national championhips if you roll the dice and take a chance. While I may regret this, I think you need to go an get Gill Turner, HC at the University of Buffalo. He was a great player, he is a great coach. Yes, he may be African-American but boy is he a real coach… and that is what UGA needs. The best talent will “beg” to play for Coach Turner. Auburn, for whatever reason, did not take him when they had the opportunity. The question is: Is Georgia ready to roll the dice and change its future? Florida did and we are happy with the results.

The UGA blackout was a joke then in Athens and once I saw the dawgies run out with their helmets yesterday, I knew the game was going to be a lopsided affair! You should have taken your blinders off when you analyzed this game. You had absolutely no chance in this game.

Florida has the best defense I have probably seen in college football the last ten years. They attack and cause turnovers.

Those guys are fast, strong, and physical. If they had a conventional QB such as AJ Brantley they would be unstoppable.

Urban Meyer stays away from the defense he lets Charlie Strong do whatever he wants.

I’m a Tech alum but unlike most I pull for UGA except when they are playing us. I’m sorry people but your rants will make it easier for Richt to leave for FSU. He is the real deal as a classic college coach and you’re not going to find anyone better that doesn’t already have a top university job. Everyone should have figured out this was going to be a down year going in. I’m not saying Richt shouldn’t make some changes and from the outside looking in it sure looks as if he needs to address discipline, especially on the field. Realize what you have people and try to help your head coach improve his team not tear it down. Think of your own maturity level at college age and realize that you don’t get Staffords and Morenos every year and the NFL is not the destination for 99% of them. You have the right leader for those kids, don’t run him off.

Yellow Fuzz,
You guys have a pretty good team and, given what has transpired the last few weeks, I have to admit our chances against GT don’t look too promising. However, the game is yet to be played. It would almost take away the pain and disappointment of this season in we beat the snot out of you and send you to the All Cupcake Conference Championship with a season ending loss. Hey, stranger things have happened!
And btw, I’d love to see GT play against a top SEC defense (not talking about ours, of course) like ‘Bama, FL, LSU (Oh sorry, we saw that one last year… OUCH!). The triple option will never be competitive against a fast, good tackling defense (to which I pray UGA will someday return). You guys better learn how to implement the forward pass before thinking about taking it to the next level.

I’M TIRED OF SEEING:
…..a once honorable UGA program play dirty, cheap shots, jabbering mouths, and personal fouls aplenty…as if they’re a high school team of gangsters.
…..piles of stupid penalties every game; after year in and year out we’re told by coaches that it was “going to be addressed”.
…..the names of Georgia players on the AJC’s arrest docket.
…..an offensive line that can’t block unless they hold, waving “ole!” at opposing rushers that torpedo our QB, make numerous false starts each game, and generally look confused like Keystone Cops.
…..constant blown assignments in the secondary, opposing recievers running free without a challenger within ten yards.
……having the other team in third and long; stopping them at the line of scrimage; and then letting the ball carrier rumble for a first down anyway, because instead of tackling, our thugs are too busy trying to yank the ball out.
……of a defense that rushes only three, rarely ever blitzes/hurries/sacks the QB; and is generally letting every offense dictate play, while the Dawgs lay back on their heels hoping to react to something in time—instead of taking the game to them and forcing the other guy out of his schemes.
……no longer trying to block a punt and getting pinned deep, simply because we’ve had a player return a couple of long ones.
……a team look gassed and out of shape midway into the third quarter, and be generally man-handeled game after game, including after weeks off.
……opponents hanging 40 or more points on UGA like it’s a birthright.
……a defensive coordinator that gets embarassed on a regular basis—-but doesn’t seem to personally feel embarassed.
……stories about how the Dawgs lose in state blue chip players to rivals across the region, while the head coach is out somewhere singing missionary songs to church groups (which again begs the question, if he’s so Christian; why do his teams “testify” by playing so dirty and breaking laws around Athens?).
…..no gadget plays that one would think a clever program would install during a bye week to put their opponents off balance.
…..Richt fail to stand up like a man and take responsiblity for a program he’s let fall into an undisciplined tailspin; AND ACTUALLY DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT INSTEAD OF JUST PLEDGING HE WILL.
……fans of other teams, rightfully mock us.
……several years of an obvious attitude issue in Athens; and hearing denial, seeing no change.

Folks, it can’t go on like this much longer, our once proud and might Dawgs, are a pack of weakling thugs that seem more focused on the hotties-at-da-parties than they do on playing well—-and our coaching staff appears blasé about the whole thing. As Jed Clampett would say, “pitiful…jus’ pitiful!”

Hoping some of you football fans that didn’t attend UGA but always have pulled for them will start giving GT a chance. Why? Because Paul Johnson has found a way to win despite not having a top 10 recruiting class yr after yr and with a not so top notch defense, the offense compensates for it. Johnathon Dwyer rushed for 180 yards last night and Mr. College Football as yet to even look his way as a viable Heisman candidate. Yet, Barnhard cannot praise Spiller at Clemson fast enough. I do not want to hear about Option backs are not allowed to be candidates, those days are over. It is not GT’s fault that UGA had an opportunity to hire CPJ when he was at Ga Southern and you ignored him despite two National titles. So football fans come cheer CPJ and that team on, damn the offense is exciting to watch.

Adams seems to be working on it by having the polices in Athens trumps charges against some of stinky players. It’s Fans like YOU who are the true backstabbers!!! You would just sit back and blindly follow this program right off the cliff. I’m sick and tired of fans like you and the rest of the lot calling into question the loyalty and passion of other Dawg Fans!
I was born in Athens, have been a life long fan and am raising Dawg fans in the middle of gator country here in Jacksonville.
Just because I don’t have my head buried in the sand and expect some magical transformation to just happen doesn’t mean I’m not a true fan.
The REAL Dawg Fans are the ones NOT willing to just sit back and accept what’s happening. This isn’t just a case of a successful coach having a “down” year. There are MAJOR issues with this staff and their coaching philosophy.

Ask yourself this: Why is it that our players actually REGRESS from the time they hit campus?
Jeff Owens, Bryan Evans, Rennie Curran, Prince Miller, all played better as freshmen than they are this year! Why is this? Martinez has TWO weeks to prepare a game plan and comes out with the exact same game plan. The coaches are either lazy or unimaginative (I suspect a bit of both)

Just because some of us actually pay attention to what’s going on and don’t look at the program through rose-colored glasses DOES NOT mean we’re not “real fans” or “fair weather fans”.

The Alumni/boosters, Fans AND Players ALL deserve better than what we’re getting from these coaches.

Mark Richt……..if you keep doing the same things that you have always have done……..you are going to keep getting the same results that you have always gotten! CHANGE UP!

It starts with recruiting, you are getting beat by the other SEC coaches by your refusal to actually visit a recruit at his school or home in person, you need to quit sending you assistant coaches out to do this job! Mike Bobo cannot compete with Nick Saban, Pete Carroll, Lane Kiffin, these coaches actually visit play-maker recruits in person, it makes a big difference! (they do not invite them to their campus office)

Bull Dawg Nation, you can forget about the so called star system 5 star, 3 star, NR, players these are placed on recruits by companies (Rivals, Scout, etc) trying to make money selling subscriptions! When UGA was blown nearly out of the Atlanta played Sugar Bowl, we knew that CWM had not clue with spread offenses, etc. This has been a trend for years or at least since he inherited Van Gorder’s men. We have been in a huge, decline with CWM at the helm and we lack the attitude to play aggressive, winning SEC D. We stink.

Now, Richt has accepted this lack of performance on the D side of the ball and also on the O for several years, folks. Several years this has been a trend not it is where we are and what we are as a team. L-O-U-S-Y we are.

NOW? It is time for ALL of the UGA coaches to be fired. Hire a head coach now ( December ) and then, next year we possibly can have a better year and then, we will be back in the hunt maybe for the SEC East in year 2011. Make no changes ……………then we are at the level of KY and Vandy and Mississippie State and the rest. Fans will stay away in droves and droves.

Fire Richt & Co. now
Prediction: UGA wins only 2 of the next 4 games. 6-6 is what we have become.
